Early voting in May 4 election underway !

Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

(Seguin) - Early voting begins today in the Saturday, May 4th election.

Voters are reminded that this is not early voting for the Republican Primary Run-off Election. That will take place closer to the election in late May.

Lisa Hayes, the Guadalupe County Elections Administrator says this May 4th election will include ballot items from cities, schools, and political subdivisions. She says she strongly encourages voters to check with the elections office if they are not sure if they reside in a jurisdiction that will be holding an election on May 4th.

“Because the county itself isn’t holding an election for county level races, so there will be voters who don’t have a ballot for the May 4th election so it is really important that they come and get a sample ballot and the easiest thing to do is come to the

elections office. They can also go out to the early voting locations and the poll workers can look them up and find their sample ballot but there will be a little difference because some voters won’t have anything to vote on until we get to the Primary Runoff in the end of May,” said Hayes.

Hayes says voters should take note of the following entities and see if they live within their service area.

“Some of the entities that we will see in this election will be the Guadalupe MUD 6, Lake Dunlap Water Control Improvement District, New Braunfels ISD, Springs Hill SUD, the city of Selma, Navarro ISD, the city of Santa Clara, Universal City and Sky Ranch Municipal Utility District. So there is a wider range of districts that we don’t always see in the May election this year,” said Hayes.

Jack Lee Learning Center name unveiling set for today

(Seguin) - Today is the day for the much-anticipated unveiling of the newly dedicated Jack Lee Learning Center.

The former Mercer-Blumberg Learning Center in the Seguin Central Office Building will be renamed in honor of the late Jack Lee.

Lee unexpectedly died just three months after retiring from the school district in 2019. He served 44 years as a teacher. Thirty-seven of those years were

served in the Seguin ISD.

After seeking nominations

from the community, the Seguin ISD unanimously voted

for the new name and allowed for the new façade/signage that will be unveiled outside the building.

The MBLC operation was relocated to the Saegert Campus allowing the opportunity to rename the center in the Oak Park Mall building.

The unveiling and dedication ceremony will be held today at 5:15 p.m. A small reception will follow inside the building until 5:45 p.m.

Child in Gonzales County confesses to murder

Murder weapon seized in Seguin

(Nixon) - The murder weapon allegedly used by a then 7-year-old boy two years ago in the murder of a Nixon man has been located in a Seguin pawn shop.

Gonzales County Sheriff's Office investigators say they have spent the past few days uncovering all the details behind the murder incident that begin on Jan. 18, 2022 when deputies responded to the Lazy J RV Park in Nixon and found the victim Brandon Rasberry, 32, dead inside his RV.

Rasberry is said to have died from a single shot to the head. After all possible leads were exhausted two years, officials say the case was revisited on Friday, April 12 after the sheriff's office received a phone call from the principal at a Nixon Smiley ISD campus who reported that a 10-year-old male student had threatened to assault and kill another student on a bus the night before.

When deputies were conducting a threat assessment on the student, that's when they said the 10-year-old child described in detail that two years ago he shot and killed a man in a trailer in Nixon, Texas.

Investigators say the child stated he was visiting his grandfather at his house in the same RV park on the afternoon of Sunday Jan. 16th, 2022.

The ten-year-old stated he obtained a pistol from the glove box of his grandfather's truck. The child described the pistol as a 9-millimeter pistol "dirt and army green" in color.

The child informed investigators he then entered the RV belonging to Rasberry. The child stated he observed Brandon sleeping in his bed and approached him and

Navarro, continued.

As Hayes mentioned, one of the jurisdictions that has been preparing for an election is the Navarro ISD. Navarro ISD voters are being asked to consider a $120 million bond election.

There are three propositions that make up the bond package. Proposition A has a total of $73.7 million and includes the construction of a new elementary school. Proposition B calls for $35.5 million to be spent on a new athletic stadium and field house. Proposition C calls for expenditures of $10.8 million for new baseball and softball turf fields, tennis courts, restrooms, and concessions.

District officials say the fast-

discharged the firearm striking him one time in the head. The child stated as he was leaving the RV he discharged the firearm another time into the couch inside the RV. The child then allegedly exited the RV and returned the firearm to the glovebox of the truck.

When asked, the child stated he had never met Rasberry but only once earlier in the day walking around.

The child also answered 'no' when asked if he was mad at Rasberry or if the victim had ever done anything to him.

On Friday, April 12th, investigators were able to locate the firearm that was used to murder the man at a pawn shop in Seguin and secured the firearm as evidence. Investigators say the child also confirmed during the interview that the gun had been pawned by his grandfather.

Further investigation confirmed that the firearm seized as evidence here in Seguin was the firearm that was used to commit the murder.

The child was immediately transported to a psychiatric hospital in San Antonio for evaluation and treatment. Upon being released from the hospital, the child was transported from San Antonio to the Gonzales County Sheriff's Office where he was booked on charges relating to the school bus incident for Terroristic Threat. The child was then placed in detention by the Gonzales County Juvenile Probation. He currently is awaiting a court date.

Because of the child's age, Texas Penal Code 8.07 states that a child does not have criminal culpability until they reach the age of 10-years old. At the time of the murder, the juvenile suspect was seven years old, one week shy of his 8th birthday. Therefore, charges for murder will not be filed and cannot be accepted by the Gonzales County Attorney's Office for consideration of prosecution in accordance with state law.

paced growth that the area is experiencing has forced them to come before voters.

The district’s Long Range Planning Committee identified 18 subdivisions that are actively under construction as well as 12 future subdivisions in progress. Committee members say the district’s existing facilities just cannot handle that growth.

Another highlighted ballot item involves the Springs Hill Water Supply Corporation. Springs Hill is asking its members to allow it to convert from a water corporation to a special utility district or SUD. In addition, voters will get to vote for one or all of the six individuals seeking a director position for Springs Hill.

Voters may cast their ballots at all six early voting locations in Guadalupe County. Those locations include the Seguin Elections Office, the Central Texas Technology Center, Redemptive Grace Ministries, the Schertz Community Center, Selma City Hall and the New Berlin City Hall.

Early voting begins today and runs through Tuesday, April 30. The hours this week are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday (April 2226) and on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Early voting hours Monday and Tuesday (April 29 and 30th) are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Sample ballots are available in the elections office or at the early voting polls.

TLU Baseball Takes Centenary Series with 11-2 Win

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Baseball blasted five extra base hits and beat Centenary, 11-2, in their final game at Katt-Isbel Field in the 2024 season to win the series on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (21-14, 10-8 SCAC) were led by their seniors in their final home game. Asher Bonnell (Round Rock/Stony Point) finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and Aric Vasquez (San Antonio/Brandeis) went 2-for-6 with a three-RBI triple while Johnny Garza Jr. (San Antonio/ McCollum) tossed a 153-pitch complete game.

Garza put together the longest outing of his career, pitching his first career complete-game and allowing just two runs on seven hits and six walks. He struck out three batters and recorded his fourth win of the season.

After allowing a run in the first, Texas Lutheran jumped all over Centenary with a four-run second inning. A walk, error, and single loaded the bases for the Bulldogs to start the inning before an infield single from Chance Greene (Round Rock/Stony Point) tied the game 1-all. For the second straight game, Aric Vasquez would come to the plate with the bases loaded and clear them, this time with a bases clearing, three RBI triple to give TLU a 4-1 lead.

An RBI triple from Chase Bourgeois (League City/Clear Falls) and an RBI single from Asher Bonnell in the third inning made the score 6-1.

Bourgeois, who would finish a home run shy of the cycle Saturday, would rip an RBI double for the first of two runs in the fifth. Bonnell would single to right center to bring in Bourgeois to extend the TLU lead to 8-1.

Centenary would scratch a run across in the eighth to bring the game to 8-2.

Texas Lutheran would bring the game to its final score with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. After loading the bases with one out, senior Dylan Swanson (Katy/Katy) would rip an RBI single to right field to keep the offense going. Asher Bonnell would wrap his 4-for-5 day with an RBI single to left field that would lead to two runs scoring following a Centenary error, bringing the game to its final score of 11-2.

The Bulldogs, who enter the final weekend of the regular series still in SCAC Tournament contention, will end the regular season with a threeday, three-game series against the Southwestern University Pirates starting on Friday night at 6 PM in Georgetown. Arizona’s Near-Total Abortion Ban Still Law

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Arizona’s near-total abortion ban is still law. The Civil War-era law outlaws the procedure except to save the life of the woman and threatens providers with prison sentences between two and five years. The state’s House did not repeal the law on Wednesday following attempts by Democratic lawmakers to do so. At the moment, the earliest the ban could be enforced is early June. President Biden has said he plans to make abortion a focal point of his campaign.

Weight Loss Drug Zepbound Found To Also Help With Obstructive Sleep Apnea

(Indianapolis, IN) -- The popular weight loss drug Zepbound also appears to help with obstructive sleep apnea. That’s according to drugmaker Eli Lilly. The company said it plans to submit trial results to the USDA to possibly expand the drug’s use. Obstructive sleep apnea causes people to stop breathing briefly while sleeping, preventing them from feeling fully rested.

PepsiCo Recalls. Zero Sugar Ginger Ale That Actually Contained Full Sugar

(Purchase, NY) -- PepsiCo is recalling over 200 cases of Schweppes Zero Sugar Ginger Ale that actually contain sugar. That’s according to the FDA website.
