NOT THE RIGHT MASK It - Purtroppo la maschera che portiamo oggi non è quella in copertina ma serve a proteggerci dal Male. Viviamo giorni di incertezza e sgomento come mai avremmo creduto. Perché allora uscire con una rivista di moda? Perché è l’unico mezzo che ho per riuscire a far sorridere. Perché il mio lavoro continua ad appassionarmi a dispetto di questo stramaledetto virus. Perché sono convinta che ce la faremo, che la gioia ci salverà e i nostri bambini ne usciranno più forti. Ho passato giorni interi in pigiama, guardando la TV e sentendomi come tutti sempre più impotente e spaventata. Poi una mattina mi sono vestita, truccata, profumata, ho ripreso in mano il mio Scimparello e ricominciato da dove mi ero interrotta, sforzandomi ancora di più e rinnovandolo nella grafica e nei contenuti. Il tema di questo numero sono gli animali. Era già stato deciso ma non credo potesse capitare argomento migliore. “Fissa il tuo cane negli occhi e tenta ancora di affermare che gli animali non hanno un’anima” scriveva Victor Hugo. Abbiamo tutti bisogno di essere amati e compresi. Oggi più che mai. E i nostri animali lo fanno. Ogni giorno, sempre, con una fiducia che commuove. Non abbandoniamoli.

en - Unfortunately, the mask we wear today is not the one on the cover but it is to protect us from Evil. We live days of uncertainty and dismay as we would never have believed. So why come out with a fashion magazine? Because it’s the only way I can try to make people smile. Because my work continues to fascinate me in spite of this damn virus. Because I believe that we will succeed, that joy will save us and our children will emerge stronger. I spent days in my pyjama, watching the news on TV and feeling like everyone else more and more helpless and frightened. Then one morning I got dressed, I put some make-up on, I put a spritz of my favourite scent on my wrists, I picked up my Scimparello and started again from where I left off, striving even more and renewing it in graphics and content. The theme of this issue are the animals. It had already been decided before but I don’t think we could choose a better topic. “Fix your dog in the eye and try again to say that animals don’t have a soul” wrote Victor Hugo. We all need to be loved and understood. Today more than ever. And our animals do it. Every day, always, with a trust that moves. 15 Let us not abandon them.

L’AMICO INVISIBILE It - Ho sempre affermato che non sono proprio un tipo da rapporto con gli animali. L’unico esemplare che abbia mai avuto è stato un canarino di nome Ulisse, che regalai al mio migliore amico dopo due mesi. Lui lasciò la gabbia in giardino, proprio dove il gatto del suo vicino di casa era solito avventurarsi… E pensate un po’, il gatto si chiamava Omero! Non ho mai avuto criceti, non ho mai voluto pesci rossi al Luna Park, una volta ho provato ad addomesticare un ragnetto trovato in soggiorno, ma l’esperienza è durata un giorno. Però il mio cartone animato preferito è “La carica dei 101”. La scena dei padroni che portano a spasso i loro cani che gli somigliano in atteggiamento e aspetto mi divertiva tantissimo da piccolo come ora. E da lì ho sempre immaginato un mio ipotetico compagno a quattro zampe simile a me: pigro e goloso. E non credete che sia stata una fantasia di bambino. Ancora fino a 3 anni fa vivevo con mia sorella (più grande) e insieme abbiamo “adottato” Franco, un simpatico carlino che usciva da solo per andare a fare la passeggiata, non abbaiava, e poco mancava che andasse a fare la spesa al posto nostro. Un animale domestico 16 perfetto, che viveva solo nella nostra fantasia.

en - I’m not really an animals-lover. The only pet I ever had was a canary named Ulysses, which I gave to my best friend after two months. He left the cage in the garden, just where his neighbor’s cat used to venture ... And what a coincidence, the cat was called Homer! I never had hamsters, I never wanted goldfishes at the Luna Park, once I tried to tame a spider found in the living room, but the experience lasted one day. But I have to say my favorite cartoon is “One Hundred and One Dalmatians”. The scene in which owners are taking their looking-similar dogs for a walk, amused me a lot as a child. And from there I have always imagined my hypothetical four-legged pet similar to me: lazy and greedy. And don’t think it was only a child’s fantasy. Still up to 3 years ago I lived with my (older) sister and together we “adopted” Franco, a nice pug who went out on his own to go for a walk, did not bark, and not far off him going to the grocery store instead our. A perfect pet, except he was living only in our fantasies.

Qual è la storia dietro a questo shooting?

Ho deciso di interpretare il tema “Animali” in chiave originale, aggiungendo una delle prerogative essenziali nel mondo dei bambini: il gioco. Ho costruito un vero e proprio zoo sul set con peluche e vecchi giocattoli di quando ero piccola.

Ricordi un episodio particolarmente piacevole o divertente?

Senza dubbio quando Edwin, uno dei bimbi protagonisti, è stato fotografato con un peluche di polipo in testa, era più alto di lui e siamo tutti scoppiati a ridere!

Se fossi un animale saresti….

Un pinguino: piccolo, un po’ goffo e sempre pronto a regalare un sorriso agli amici. ________________

What is the story behind the shooting?

I decided to interpret the theme “Animals” in the original key, adding one of the essential prerogatives in the world of children: the game. I built a real zoo on the set with soft animals and old toys from when I was a little kid.

Do you remember a particularly pleasant or funny moment?

Without any doubt when Edwin, one of the children, was shot with an octopus toy on his head: it was taller than him and we all burst out laughing!

If you were an animal you would be…

A penguin: small, a little awkward and always ready to give a smile to friends!

Qual è la storia dietro a questo shooting?

Vivo in campagna a un’ora da Parigi e sono circondato da animali. Era da molto tempo che pensavo ad uno servizio con bambini e agnellini.

Ricordi un episodio particolarmente piacevole o divertente?

All’inizio gli agnellini, che avevano solo 5 giorni, erano nervosi così abbiamo chiesto ad Andrea e Zac, i modelli, di stare molto tranquilli e silenziosi. Sono stati così bravi che alla fine un agnellino si è persino addormentato.

Se fossi un animale saresti….

Un delfino, per la sua intelligenza e libertà. ________________

What is the story behind the shooting?

I live in the countryside an hour from Paris and I am surrounded by animals. I’ve been thinking about shooting children and lambs together since a long time.

Do you remember a particularly pleasant or funny moment? At the beginning the lambs, only 5 days old, were nervous so we asked Andrea and Zac, the models, to be very quiet and silent. They were so good that eventually a little lamb even felt asleep.

Volevo cercare di integrare un ragazzo moderno nel regno animale. Il film Swiss Army Man mi ha fatto pensare alla funzione di un coltellino svizzero: uno strumento che risolve qualsiasi situazione. Così, anche io ho cercato di unire animali, moda e bambini e creare una tribù tutta per loro.

Ricordi un episodio particolarmente piacevole o divertente? L’intero shooting è stato divertente.

What is the story behind the shooting?

I was trying to integrate a modern boy into the animal kingdom. The Swiss Army Man movie made me think about the function of a Swiss Army Knife: a tool that solves any situation. So, I’ve tried too to unite animals, fashion and children and create a tribe for them.

Do you remember a particularly pleasant or funny moment? The whole shooting was just horsing around.

If you were an animal you would be… A dog because he is a loyal animal.

Qual è la storia dietro a questo shooting?

La magia e la bellezza di una natura intatta, un mondo dove la sostenibilità è possibile. Il mondo di Celine e dei suoi 4 figli che vivono in una fattoria dove ognuno, come la natura richiede, ha il suo ruolo e il suo valore.

Ricordi un episodio particolarmente piacevole o divertente?

Quando Cashmere, una delle pecore, ha mangiato una rosa intera direttamente dalla mano di Hadrien, che ogni giorno prepara per loro una zuppa a base di erbe e petali di rose. Cashmere l’ha vista, l’ha presa e se l’è pappata in un sol boccone.

Se fossi un animale saresti…

Una giraffa. Perché sono alta 1.83, che per una donna è tanto, perché è il simbolo della comunicazione non violenta e perché ha una prospettiva diversa del mondo e di comprensione del quadro generale. Il suo linguaggio è libertà, coerenza e chiarezza. ________________

What is the story behind the shooting?

The magic and the beauty of an intact nature, a world where sustainability is possible. The world of Céline and her 4 children living in a farm where each animal, like in the wild world, has its own value and reason to be.

Do you remember a pleasant or funny moment?

When Cashmere, one of the sheep, ate a whole rose directly from the hand of Hadrien, who every day prepares for them a soup of herbs and rose petals. Cashmere saw it, grab it and swallow it in one bite.

If you were an animal you would be…

A giraffe. Because I am 1.83 tall, which for a woman is a lot, because she is the symbol of non-violent communication and because she has a different perspective of the world and understanding of the big picture. Was this story written now or years ago? Who can know? The flavour of

something retro, is what I plan to get you. An animal for each child, and so far, nothing wild. Antonio hugs a

teddy bear. What a great kid, none can compare! A flamingo is Bella’s, what a surprise, and like a helicopter she

flies through the skies. You say it’s all imagination, but what is life without

fantastication? Imagine a sea without

fish if you wish! The whales on the waves totter and teeter, and the starfish, they

are even sweeter. And in the meadows

even insects are teasing each other, such disrespect! In the winter many will go

to sleep, and then in spring bloom with colours so deep. In Scimparello we’ll

talk of all this, and in Morena’s hands, there is even more bliss!

Sono un “composit” di passioni. Amo disegnare, dipingere, tagliare, incollare, scolpire, inventare, copiare, cucire. I mercatini delle pulci mi rapiscono. Difficilmente sono soddisfatta di un lavoro appena terminato ma sono certa che quello dopo sarà grandioso.

La figurina preferita fra quelle del servizio?

Carola. Perché è timida e curiosa. Perché è vestita per giocare e per correre. Perché ama gli animali e li tiene vicino.

Se fossi un animale saresti...

Una scimmia perché sono animali indipendenti, attenti, ironici. Perché sono agili come piccoli acrobati. Socievoli ma anche scorbutici. ________________

Describe yourself in three sentences

I am a “composite” of passions. I love to draw, paint, cut, paste, sculpt, invent, copy, sew. Flea markets always capture my attention. I’m hardly satisfied with a job I just finished but I’m sure the next one I’ll do will be the greatest.

Your favorite drawing of this editorial?

Carola. Because she’s shy and curious. Because she’s dressed to play and run. Because she loves animals and keeps them close.

If you were an animal you would be…

A monkey because they are independent, careful, ironic. Because they are agile as little acrobats, sociable but also grouchy.

Ho subito pensato ai miei animali, che amo tantissimo. Mi piaceva l’idea di fare qualcosa che potesse dimostrare il legame di complicità fra loro e l’uomo. È qualcosa magico, perché sono parte della tua famiglia e dei tuoi giorni.

Ricordi un episodio particolarmente piacevole o divertente?

Il cane non smetteva di correre per tutta la casa tanto che Diego ha dovuto inseguirlo per un bel po’ prima di avere lo scatto perfetto. E abbiamo dovuto aspettare 10 minuti che la tartaruga tirasse fuori il muso dal guscio, era un po’ timida.

Pet Therapy. It all started one day in 1953 by accident. An autistic patient of Dr. Levinson, a child psychiatrist, happens to meet Jungles, the doctor’s dog, who comes up to him and licks him. The child, not at all frightened, caresses him and establishes with him the first emotional relationship of his life. It - Francis Miller doveva essere un tipo stravagante. Non ho trovato molto di lui sul web (non ha neppure una pagina Wikipedia) ma da quel poco che è stato pubblicato ed ho letto mi sono fatta l’idea di un uomo dalla vita avventurosa al quale certo non mancava il carattere, nel bene e nel male. Una cosa però la so, e la so perché ho visto le sue fotografie, non solo quelle di questo servizio ma altre scattate per lo più per la rivista Life: Francis Miller è stato un grande fotografo. Uno dei più grandi. Uno di quelli che quando guardi una sua foto ti fermi e neppure sai bene perché. Sai solo che fai fatica a cambiare pagina. Che le persone che fotografa, siano essi attori, assassini, mafiosi, politici, sportivi, persone comuni, bambini, vecchi, donne, uomini, brava o cattiva gente hanno nello sguardo sempre qualcosa che è a metà fra l’inquietante e la più totale normalità. E anche se la fotografia ritrae una folla, tutti i visi si assomigliano, non perché realmente sono simili ma perché li attraversa la stessa emozione, quella che trasmettono anche a te che li stai guardando da uno 120

en - Francis Miller must have been an oddball. I didn’t find much about him on internet (he doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page) but from the little has been published and I could read I got the idea of a man with an adventurous life who certainly didn’t lack character, for better or for worse. But I do know one thing, and I know it because I saw his photographs, not just those of this shooting but others taken mostly for Life magazine: Francis Miller was a great photographer. One of the biggest. One of those you look at his pictures and you stare at them, and you don’t even know why. You just know that you can’t easily turn the page. That everyone he shoots, they could be actors, murderer, mafiosi, politicians, sportsmen, ordinary people, children, elder, women, men, good or bad persons the always have in their eyes something that is halfway between disturbing and total normality. And even though he portrays a crowd, all faces resemble each other, not because they are really similar but because they are crossed by the same emotion, The one that also broadcast to you, watching them

Una sua foto d’archivio è stata scattata a Chicago il 1°gennaio 1960 e mostra un negozio svaligiato da poliziotti, così per lo meno recita il titolo perché nella foto tutto sembra a posto. C’è la neve e solo una persona per strada, e l’immagine è in bianco e nero, e sul muro dell’edificio di fianco ci sono due grandi manifesti che dovrebbero attirare l’attenzione eppure io non ricordo cosa pubblicizzano, però ho ben stampato in testa l’atmosfera di quella foto. Come un quadro di Hopper. Un attimo di vita fissato in un fotogramma dove nulla è speciale eppure tutto è poesia. Poi ci sono le foto di Martin Luther King durante il famoso discorso I Have a Dream al Lincoln Memorial di Washington nell’agosto del 1963, e sono decisamente intense ma credo che non fare intenso il Dr King fosse difficile mentre non era facile, e non lo era per nulla, trasmettere il senso di quella marcia dopo che tutti se ne erano andati. Dopo che l’enorme folla con tutta la sua energia si era dissolta. Sarà che a me piacciono sempre le foto del dopo, quelle di quando finiscono le feste e le stanze sono sottosopra, o termina la cena e le tavole sono ingombre di piatti sporchi, comunque, c’è una sua foto di quel giorno che io trovo fra le sue più belle: una donna, sfinita, seduta scompostamente sulle scalinate di marmo del Lincoln Memorial senza scarpe. Tutto intorno cartacce e senso di abbandono eppure in quell’immagine lo senti che lì è successo qualcosa di grandioso. Lo senti così forte e così profondamente che sei lì. Anche tu. A far parte della storia. Ed è lui che ti ci ha portato. Sono pochi i fotografi che lo sanno fare. Ma davvero pochi.

One of his archive pic was taken in Chicago on January the 1st 1960 and shows a store robbed by policemen, so at least the title recites because in the picture everything seems to be fine. There is snow on the sideway and only one person on the street, and it is a black and white, picture, and on the wall of the building next door there are two large posters that should have attracted my attention but I can’t remember what they advertise, because what it really stuck in my head is the atmosphere of that photo. Like a painting of Hopper. A moment of life fixed in a frame where nothing is special and yet everything is poetry. Then there are the photos of Martin Luther King during the famous I have a Dream speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington in August 1963, and they are definitely intense but I think not making Dr King intense was kind of difficult. What it wasn’t easy, not easy at all, was to communicate the sense of that march after everyone had gone. After the huge crowd with all its energy had dissolved. Maybe It’s just because I like the after-pictures, the ones are taken when the parties end and the rooms are upside down, or the dinner are over and the tables are cluttered with dirty dishes; however, there’s a picture he took that day that I find one of his best: a woman, exhausted, sitting disorderly on the marble staircase of the Lincoln Memorial with no shoes on. All around papers trash and feelings of abandonment and yet in his photo you feel that something glorious just happened there. You feel it so strong and so deeply that you are there. You too. Being part of history. And he was him who brought you. 123

Beauty must be felt in order to be portrayed. E che dire di questo meraviglioso servizio che ha realizzato in un ospedale per bambini dove si credeva che gli animali potessero aiutarli a guarire? Avete guardato bene le loro espressioni, il loro incedere, i loro sorrisi? Credete forse li abbia messi in posa? Sono certa di no. Era un reporter. Lui catturava quello che sentiva. Probabilmente si sarebbe innervosito se qualcuno glielo avesse proposto. Non ci è dato sapere se l’idea di questo servizio fosse sua o se glielo avesse commissionato la rivista Life ma a me piace immaginare che l’abbia proposto lui. Però, se anche così non fosse, sono certa che gli è piaciuto. Perché a noi tutti, in redazione, il suo messaggio è arrivato forte e chiaro.

Few photographers know how to do this. Very, very few. And what about this wonderful shooting we publish which he shot in a children’s hospital that treated its little patients with a method that believed animals could help them to feel better? Did you take a good look at the children eyes, their standing walk, their smiles? Do you think he asked them to pose? I’m sure he did not. He was a reporter. He captured what he felt. He would got probably upset if someone had suggested it to him. We do not know if the idea of this shooting was his or if it was commissioned by Life magazine but I like to imagine that he proposed it. However, even if that was not the case, I am sure he liked it. Because we all, in our editorial office, got his message loud and clear. 125

Mi chiedo spesso perché alcune persone riescano, senza neppure parlarsi, a entrare nell’animo degli altri e avvertire quello che provano. Come si impara a sentire quello che sente un altro essere vivente? Beh, io credo che se si cresce con un animale è più facile. Perché l’empatia non è un’esclusiva degli uomini. Vi ricordate quando Marley (da Io & Marley) appoggia la testa sulle gambe di Jennifer disperata per avere perso il bambino che aspettava? Cos’è se non empatia quella? E a proposito di empatia e amore, leggete un po’ qui sotto cosa ne pensano i nostri bambini dei loro animali.

I often wonder why some people are able, without even speaking to each other, to enter the soul of others and perceive exactly what they are experiencing. How do you learn to feel what another living being feels? Well, I believe that if you grow up with an animal it is an easier process. Because empathy is not exclusive to men. Do you remember when Marley (from Marley & Me) leaned her head on Jennifer’s legs, desperate to have lost the child she was carrying? What is it if not empathy? It - Julia Castaño ha fondato Don Fisher nel 2013, anno in cui decise di dover cambiare vita. Ci riuscì grazie a una coincidenza. Mentre lei pensava a cosa poteva fare di bello, parola che in Spagnolo si traduce con “bonito”, sua madre le suggerisce di creare degli accessori a forma di pesce . Infatti bonito è anche il nome di un pesce simile al tonno. Da questo gioco di parole sono nati i bonitos di Don Fisher: astucci, borse, portachiavi e zaini. Pochi mesi dopo è entrata a far parte del team Lorena, che si occupa della comunicazione del brand. I bonitos sono fatti a mano, con ottimi materiali e presentati sul sito come se ci trovassimo in una vera pescheria. Per ogni nuova collezione Julia si documenta su un particolare oceano o mare con i suoi abitanti… così abbiamo le sardine e le carpe del Mar Mediterraneo o le aringhe e i salmoni della collezione Alaska. In ultimo sono arrivati gli abitanti del mar del Madagascar, come il simpatico pesce spazzino. Noi li vorremmo semplicemente tutti, trasformando la sezione accessori del nostro guardaroba in un regno del mare. en- Julia Castaño has founded Don Fisher in 2013, the year in which she decided to change her life. She made it by coincidence. While she was thinking about something beautiful to do (the word for beautiful is “bonito” in Spanish) her mother suggested her to create fish-shaped accessories. In fact bonito is also the name of a fish similar to tuna. From this play on words, Don Fisher’s bonitos were born: pencil cases, bags, key rings and backpacks. A few months later Lorena, which is in charge of brand communication, joined the team. The bonitos are handmade, with excellent materials and showcased on the website as if we were in a real fish market. For each new collection Julia is documenting on a particular ocean or sea with its inhabitants ... so we have the sardines and carps of the Mediterranean Sea or the herrings and salmons of the Alaska collection. Finally, the inhabitants of the sea of Madagascar arrived, like the nice sweeper fish. We would simply like to have them all, transforming the accessories section of our wardrobe into a kingdom of the sea. La stylist e proprietaria dello shop The Little Red Planet ci svela i piccoli segreti della sua adorata Max. The stylist and owner of The Little Red Planet shares with us the little secrets about her beloved Max. 136

It - Sono comodamente seduta nella cornice trendy di uno spazio di Williamsburg, Brooklyn NYC, aspettando che Mindi Smith, stylist e proprietaria di Little Red Planet mi raggiunga per la nostra intervista. Il negozio di Mindi è inserito in una specie di bellissimo mercato metropolitano con tanti pop-up store. A un certo punto la porta si apre e compare un bellissimo cane bianco che si muove lentamente, con Mindi a stretta distanza. Max, questo è il suo nome, conosce la strada e fa largo a Mindi verso il bancone del caffè. Sembra una star… le persone intorno la guardano, parlano, bisbigliano e finalmente trovano il coraggio di farsi avanti e chiedere un selfie o una fotografia. Max è massiccia e morbida come un orso polare ma senza la tendenza aggressiva di volerti mangiare. Appena arriva da me dandomi un colpetto sulla mano, penso contenta: “Credo di piacerle!” Prima dell’intervista Mindi ed io parliamo molto di Max, presumo che mantenerla le costi una piccola fortuna con quel look da pedigree!, quindi mi stupisco quando Mindi mi spiega che è una trovatella. “Come può qualcuno abbandonare un cane come questo?” penso tra me e me. Tra l’altro ho riconosciuto Max come la protagonista della campagna del brand Tuchinda scattata da Zoe Adlersberg e ho pubblicato quelle foto su Pirouette non solo perché erano belle ma anche perché mi ero innamorata del cane - ed ora eccola qui, davanti a me, in carne ed ossa! Mentre parliamo, due bambine si avvicinano pian piano fino a trovarsi di fronte a noi. Dicono ciao a Max cercando uno sguardo di rassicurazione dal loro papà. Mindi mi aiuta a scegliere qualche capo e mentre troviamo la luce migliore per le foto procediamo con l‘intervista. Mi ritrovo a pensare, con una punta d’invidia, che Max non ha bisogno di nessuna luce particolare. E’ già perfetta così.

en - I’m sitting comfortably in trendy Williamsburg Brooklyn NYC waiting for stylist and Little Red Planet owner Mindi Smith to arrive at her store for a Pirouette interview. Mindi’s store is part of an uber cool food venue with multiple pop up stores… the door opens and in wanders Max slowly but purposely with Mindi following closely behind. Max knows where she is and gradually makes her way to say hello to the coffee counter. Max has a presence a little like a star… people look, talk, whisper and finally pluck up the courage to introduce themselves often with the purpose of obtaining a selfie or picture. Like everyone I fall in love with Max she’s massive and fluffy like a polar bear but without the aggressive tendency to eat you. As she wanders over to me nudging my hand I feel myself getting excited thinking ‘I think she likes me’! Mindi and I chat about Max before our interview, I presume she cost a small fortune with her pedigree looks so was surprised when Mindi explained she was a rescue dog…’How could anyone give her up’ I think to myself, I also recognise her as the dog from the Tuchinda shoot by Zoe Adlersberg. I featured the photography on Pirouette not only because it was beautiful but also because I loved the dog - and here she is in person ;-)’ Whilst we are talking two little girls that have been gradually getting closer and closer finally find themselves within touching distance - they say hello to Max looking up to their Dad for reassurance. Mindi helps me with pulling some pieces for a shoot I’m working on later that day and so after trying to find the most flattering light we get going with our interview. Somewhat enviously I think to myself ‘Max 137 doesn’t need flattering light’... it’s a dog’s life!

It - Tornando a casa da New York, guardo le foto e vedo che sono quasi tutte incentrate su Max. L’obiettivo la ama, come tutti del resto… Dieci fatti divertenti su Max 1. È felicissima dentro un’auto in corsa col finestrino abbassato. 2. La sua toelettatura costa più del mio parrucchiere. 3. Le piace mangiare pollo arrosto senza pelle. 4. È sopravvissuta dopo essere saltata nel fiume Gowanus ghiacciato a gennaio. 5. La sua posizione preferita per dormire è supina con le gambe all’aria. 6. 1. You have 10 dogs which is quite a mind blowing number, so how did you end up with 10 dogs?

Abbiamo sempre voluto dei cani ma mai immaginato di finire ad averne 10! Il nostro primo cucciolo è stato Wilf, un meraviglioso border collie, poi abbiamo adottato Louis, un jack russel mattacchione, e poi Bertie, un altro jack russel. Hannah era da sempre appassionata di bassotti, così abbiamo preso Archie, seguito a breve da Vince. Poi quando Hannah ha conosciuto suo marito hanno preso insieme Dolly, e io non ho resistito e ho preso il fratello di Dolly, Sweep. Dopo un po’ si sono aggiunti Wolfgang e Otto e infine Bella e Frank, i nostri levrieri italiani! La casa è spesso sottosopra e molto rumorosa, come potete immaginare.

We always wanted dogs, but never imagined having 10! Our first dog was Wilf, a gorgeous border collie, we rescued Louis a crazy jack Russell, then we got Bertie - a Parsons jack Russell. Hannah was always obsessed with dachshunds, we got Archie, closely followed by Vince, then when Hannah met her husband they got a little red dachshund called Dolly, I couldn’t resist and took Sweep, Dolly’s brother home. We then got two wire haired dachshunds called Wolfgang and Otto and then Bella and Frank our Italian greyhounds! The house is always busy, and at times very noisy as you can imagine!

We think it benefits children growing up with a dog, they are your best friend and confidante, a happy constant, totally loving and loyal. Dogs accept you for who you are, they are always overjoyed to see you and be with you.

Al 100%. Sanno se sei felice o triste. Quando siamo sotto stress, passiamo molto tempo con i nostri cani, facendo lunghe passeggiate o riempiendoli di coccole sul divano.

Dogs can 100% read emotions! They always know what mood you’re in whether happy or sad. If we’re ever stressed or anxious we spend time with the dogs, taking them for long walks or cuddles indoors on the sofa.

Leslie: I levrieri italiani: sono come dei piccoli aiutanti che mi seguono sempre. Hannah: Per me i bassotti: affettuosi e coccoloni. Hanno anche una forte personalità.

Lesley: I would have to say Italian greyhounds, they are like my little sidekicks always following me around! Hannah: I have to say dachshunds, they are so loving and cuddly, they have such crazy personalities too!

Le somiglianze fra cane e padrone sono divertenti, non si tratta sempre dell’aspetto ma a volte del modo di camminare o del portamento in generale.

en - 1. Do you think dogs look like their owners? Yes, or do we try to look like them ;-)…I say this because I definitely attempted to make myself look as much like Peggy as possible when photographing the images of us both for this article. I find the similarities between owners and dogs very funny, sometimes it’s not even how they look but rather their walk or attitude!

2. Peggy prova a comunicare con te in qualche modo? Il nostro Frank ci mordicchia quando vuole qualcosa.

A dir la verità parlo io con lei, proprio come se lei mi capisse. Ho sempre pensato che le persone che si comportavano così fossero pazze, ora faccio parte anche io del club… mi invento delle vocine buffe come se Peggy avesse uno slang un po’ street. Mi vergogno a scrivere queste cose.

Actually, I talk for her… as if she’s speaking. I used to think people who did such things were completely bonkers - now I’m a fully paid up member of that particular club...I make up funny voices as if my dog is speaking ‘street’. I’m slightly ashamed writing this.

3. Picasso aveva un bassotto, Lump. Hockney ne aveva due, Stanley e Boodgie. Erano come delle muse, come Bella e Frank per noi. Disegneresti mai Peggy?

3. Picasso had a dachshund called Lump, Hockney had two called Stanley and Boodgie they were their muses like Bella and Frank are ours! Would you ever paint or draw Peggy?

Ho sempre un taccuino sulla mia scrivania accanto al computer e molte volte mi ritrovo a scarabocchiare… spesso Peggy è il soggetto di questi disegnini. Mi avete dato un’idea…forse mi darò alla fotografia. Ho tantissime foto di Peggy sul mio telefono, più di quelle delle bambine… ma non ditelo loro!

When I’m at my desk I always have a pad beside my laptop and I doodle a lot - many involving Peggy… I’d like to paint her. You’ve given me the idea now, but maybe I’ll stick to photography - there are so many pictures of Peggy on my phone, more than the kids… but don’t tell them!

4. Ci piace dare ai nostri cani nomi pieni di personalità. Peggy è un bel nome, perché lo hai scelto?

C’è una lunga storia dietro. Tra vari alti e bassi nella famiglia si è sempre pensato di prendere un cucciolo ma quando finalmente abbiamo deciso, una settimana prima del giorno fissato per l’arrivo del cane, è saltato tutto. Le bambine ormai avevano scelto il nome attraverso un sistema di voto simile a un talent show televisivo. Inutile dire che in casa c’erano un paio di fanciulle dispiaciute (senza menzionare i loro genitori). Per fortuna un amico conosceva un allevatore locale che aveva due cucciolate con una piccolina ancora senza casa. E quella era la nostra Peggy. Le bimbe hanno deciso di conservare il nome anche per la nuova arrivata. 5. Noi pensiamo che i cani vadano accettati in ogni ufficio o bar. Porti sempre Peggy con te? 144

4. We love giving our dogs names full of personality. Peggy is a great name, what was your inspiration behind it?

Gosh it’s a very long story about how we got her and why she is called Peggy. Lot’s of ups and downs but the short version is that we had originally been promised a puppy but it fell through only a week before we were supposed to pick her up. The children had agreed upon the name ‘Peggy’ through a system of voting similar to a TV talent show. Needless to say when it didn’t work out we had a couple of very disappointed children (not to mention the adults). Fortunately a friend knew of a local farmer who had had 2 litters with 1 little pup still waiting for a home, and that was our real Peggy! The kids decided to keep the name Peggy for the second puppy as the first one was just ‘fake news’ and didn’t count! 5. We believe dogs should be allowed in every office

Molti dei locali pubblici qui non accettano animali. Ma quasi tutti i giorni al mattino ci incontriamo con un gruppo di amiche e i loro cani. Ci siamo date come nome Sea Hags (le Befane del Mare) e quando splende il sole facciamo della spiaggia il nostro ufficio e il nostro bar… quindi la risposta è sì!

We live beside the beach at the bottom South East corner of Scotland - it can be a little like going back in time here and that’s why I love the contrast when travelling and visiting the big cities. Many of the cafes here don’t accept dogs but most days I walk with a group of friends and their dogs first thing in the morning. We call ourselves the ‘Sea Hags’ and when the sun is shining we make the beach our office and cafe… So yes! 145

ita - È finalmente arrivato Disney+ la piattaforma di streaming che renderà più piacevole questo periodo di quarantena in famiglia. Tra l’ampio catalogo di film disponibili, siamo sicuri correrete a guardare il remake di Lilli e il Vagabondo, trasposizione del classico animato del 1955. La storia dell’altolocata cagnolina Lilli e del simpatico randagio Biagio che, dopo alcune disavventure, finiranno per innamorarsi ha da sempre appassionato intere generazioni di bambini e adulti. Ad affiancare i due protagonisti troviamo Fido, il saggio scottish terrier Whisky, l’affascinante Gilda, e il bulldog Bull. Una piccola curiosità: per poter filmare l’iconica scena della cena con gli spaghetti e le polpette, sono serviti ben tre giorni. Inizialmente la produzione aveva deciso di usare della pasta vera ma continuava a rompersi e così l’hanno sostituita con della liquirizia senza zucchero. Les Sources de Caudalie: un luogo da favola, tra natura e benessere It - Il paradiso in terra esiste e si trova a pochi chilometri da Bordeaux. Stiamo parlando di Les Sources de Caudalie, una magnifica tenuta immersa tra i vigneti dello Château Smith Haut Lafitte, strutturata come un piccolo borgo di case ispirate alle antiche abitazioni dell’Aquitania, la regione francese nella quale sorge. Molto più che un hotel, Les Sources de Caudalie sono un luogo di pace super accogliente, ecosostenibile e a misura di famiglia, per vivere una vacanza in armonia con la natura, scoprendo una regione incantevole, con un patrimonio culturale ricchissimo. Qui i bambini possono andare in bicicletta perdendosi tra boschi e vigneti: l’hotel mette a disposizione gratuitamente bici da bambino e adulto e il team di accoglienza fornisce una mappa della zona, dove sono indicati i boschi privati di Château Smith Haut Lafitte, tra cui spicca un percorso verde che sembra uscito dalle fiabe, disseminato di opere d’arte contemporanea. David Dejean, il giardiniere della tenuta, è pronto a svelare i segreti delle piante aromatiche e della frutta dell’orto dove i 2 ristoranti di Les Sources de Caudalie si approvvigionano quotidianamente per preparare piatti sani ed equilibrati (anche per i più piccoli, che hanno un menù dedicato a loro). Nella tenuta si organizzano regolarmente corsi di cucina per grandi e piccoli dove poi si mangiano le specialità preparate insieme ma anche corsi di yoga che coinvolgono tutta la famiglia. Se piove si può contare sulla sala giochi Le Petit Château, attrezzatissima e sicura anche per gli ospiti più piccini. E’ vero, in questo momento non ci è permesso viaggiare, possiamo però annotarci questo posto meraviglioso tra le mete imprescindibili per quando torneremo a farlo. E noi siamo sicuri che accadrà presto.

Much more than a hotel, Les Sources de Caudalie are a super welcoming, eco and family-friendly place of peace, to spend a holiday in harmony with nature, discovering an enchanting region with a rich cultural heritage. Here children can ride a bicycle getting lost in the woods and vineyards: the hotel provides free bikes for children and adults and the reception team provides a map of the area, where the private woods of Château Smith Haut Lafitte are indicated, including a green path that seems to come out of fairy tales stands out, scattered with works of contemporary art.
