SB LIFE & STYLE from the editor

DO YOU KNOW

where your favorite place in the world is? It seems like a simple question…I was at a party with my mom on the last day of Fiesta, sitting on a sprawling lawn in Montecito with heaping paper plates of tamales, salsa, guacamole, and pork in-between us. Having chatted enough about work and the whole pig that was cooked in front of us, my mom asked me where my favorite place in the world is. I thought for a minute...Tulum maybe? Los Angeles is nice, just kidding…The more I thought the more I kept coming back to Santa Barbara. There’s nothing I don’t like about it. It’s beautiful and full of innovative people. It’s a sustainable place to live yet still makes you feel like you’re on vacation every day (okay, some days). Almost reluctantly, wishing I had a more exotic answer, I admitted “here.” If there is no place I enjoy more than Miramar Beach at sunrise doesn’t that make my favorite place Santa Barbara? It’s where we’ve chosen to live after all. Within the city and surrounding areas there are so many places worth visiting and that make Santa Barbara an easy favorite and give it an edge over, well, everywhere. In this issue, discover places like Folded Hills, where we cuddle with adorable baby farm animals, and celebrate harvest season with a Vino Therapy massage at Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore. Gather inspiration for your next dinner party from our evening at Finley Farms, overflowing with mouthwatering truffle sprinkled pasta, local prawns and tempura zucchini blossoms by S.Y. Kitchen’s chef. Bonus: the vegetables traveled maybe 10 yards to get to the plate. Better yet, see Santa Barbara through the eyes of a visitor, might I suggest a staycation downtown at the Canary Hotel (like the one in this issue), taking in everything from the rooftop pool to dinner at Finch & Fork. I hope you’re inspired to get out and explore fall in Santa Barbara and maybe even find your new favorite place.

It’s a sunny day in Santa Barbara and the palm trees seem to pave a path as I make my way to Finch & Fork for dinner to catch up with an old friend. Nestled under the Kimpton Canary Hotel, the restaurant truly encompasses what Santa Barbara is all about.

Summer Negroni 24 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Within our first few minutes in the restaurant we are enchanted by the tasteful and inviting SpanishMediterranean décor along with welcoming staff who make us feel right at home. We are guided to our corner booth—leather banquet seats tucked under large windows with views of downtown Santa Barbara. Our server immediately greets us with a chilled bottle of Pellegrino and pickled crudités for snacking. We are presented with menus composed of local Californian dishes created by Chef Peter Cham, coupled with an impressive list of local

wines. Our server suggests the ‘17 Kaena Albariño to begin. The clean and refreshing wine has a beautiful aroma of a spring bouquet of flowers with striking notes of limestone, orange and white grapefruit; a superb aperitif. Our memorable meal begins with an order of deviled eggs topped with pickled shallot, an olive relish and smoked trout. As I take the final bite of the egg, I spot our server walking towards our table with the next dish, a sweet potato baba ganoush prepared with olive oil and sumac, which adds a hint of tartness to the dish. To lighten things up, an assortment of pickled vegetables is served alongside. The tanginess of the vegetables paired with the sweet Mediterranean dip is exquisite, and the warm house-made bread makes for a delicious tool to clear the plate. The sun begins to set, creating a glowing backdrop for the rest of our dinner. Knowing that the restaurant serves local ingredients, we order the West Coast Oysters, which thoroughly exceed our expectations. Served on a bed of crushed ice, the oysters have a cucumber note (a signature of oysters from this region) and are accompanied by garnishes including apple cucumber mignonette, cocktail sauce and a wedge of lemon. The Kaena Albariño pairs wonderfully

with the dish, and as we take our last few sips of wine, we are presented with two beautifully crafted plates of sea scallops in a gold beet relish, served in company of fresh grapefruit, chorizo vinaigrette, and sliced avocado. The perfectly seared scallop melts in my mouth, encompassing all of the flavors it was prepared with, and the golden crust adds an additional caramelized tang to the dish. We sit back and watch the sun drown into the horizon, the sky painted an array of pink and orange. Lost in the beauty of my surroundings, the enticing aroma of our salmon entree seizes my attention. Pan-seared to perfection, the fish is served on a bed of beluga lentils with capers, bits of pancetta, and baby turnip mixed in with green peppercorn hollandaise, which becomes my favorite dish of the night. Having experienced a flawless meal with unparalleled service, we are eager for the dessert menu to arrive. The sticky toffee cake seems like the obvious choice. The outer layer of the cake reveals toffee texture and flavors while the inside boasts sublime hints of date. To sweeten the deal, a brown butter

whipped cream sits atop so that each scoop includes the delectable flavors of the cake. Maple almond popcorn surrounds the perimeter, making for the perfect treat to complete our dinner.

Yin & Yuice

Thrilled by the outstanding meal we have just experienced, we jump at the chance to explore the rooftop of the Kimpton Canary Hotel where we enjoy breathtaking views of our hometown before parting ways. As the coastal fog begins to settle in I reflect on an unforgettable night of great company, delicious local wines, and an exceptional meal.

It’s Tuesday night, I’m beating back my sobriety in an effervescent little Carpinteria nook called The Apiary. Late evening sun is shining, an implicitly perfect balance of warm Indian summer fading into cool fall evening. I’m trading tastes with owners Rachna Hailey and Nole Cossart, glasses and conversation commingling in a euphoric double flight of sips, fermented education and nonchalant banter. We begin with “Jun” a 2% probiotic tonic made with fermented orange blossom honey and green tea. If I had read the description on my own it never would have found its way to my table, but having

30 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

i

the experience curated for me has opened my palate to an entirely new haven of flavors and I’m grateful. The drink is light, crisp, easy to drink, and the bubbly green tea finish is the perfect introduction to The Apiary’s botanical infusions. Rachna explains that Jun is roughly like kombucha except made with pure honey and green tea. We quickly transition to “Curcumin” which has all the refreshing notes as before but with an intense zest of flavor coming from turmeric and ginger, two ingredients I regularly seek out but have never experienced in such a refreshing sample. Our tasting is quickly amplified

by Rachna’s current favorite the “Drink Your Flowers,” at 6% it retains many of the refreshing components I identified in the Jun. The rose, hibiscus and lavender notes are a mild yet exciting transition to the higher alcohol concoctions the tasting room offers. We slow the drinking pace down with the higher alcohol samples and I take in the quaint space. It exudes immense character, from the rustic charm of hardbound literature, such as The Beekeeper’s Bible, to framed maps, a fully operational rotary pizza phone, and the hospitable bar staff that occasionally double as DJ, playing eclectic mixes of vinyl records

32 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

that permeate the space. There is no other tasting room experience such as this in the county, with a rotating collection of cider and mead all sourced from local honey and organic apples. I feel like the alcohol drinking Winnie the Pooh of Santa Barbara and we’ve only finished the first flight. For over two years Rachna and Nole have been specializing in semi-sweet variations with experimental infusions and single batch nuances circulating through their taps. I’ve just had my first sip of “Pilfering Citrus” and the literal name has my palate doubling over. Intense sharp and varied citrus notes commingle with orange and sage blossom honey, at 8.8% this is by far the most unique and exciting taste as of yet and has me eager for more. Nole tells me that their passion for the infused concoctions was born out of curiosity, experimentation and a will to explore what are the best alcoholic beverages nature can produce. Not only is this a true drink passion project it’s a reflection on what’s best about locally sourced and locally produced goods. All of the cider and mead from The Apiary is fermented inhouse. The subtle nuances that percolate between batches add immense charm and value to their ever-rotating taps. I put my notebook away and take in the last half of the second flight with no cares for notes or editorial work, instead dwelling in a subtly intoxicated state of honey and flower bubbled charm. More often than not you’ll find an IPA in my hand, but anytime I’m in need of variety, eclectic charm and an ever progressing variety of botanical infusions, you’ll find me in Carpinteria at The Apiary, semi-intoxicated and fully satiated on cider, mead and the company of an evergrowing community of its enthusiasts.

Farm to table is not trend but tradition for the Verona born chef. Cooking with locally sourced produce and proteins have been the focus of S.Y. Kitchen since its inception in 2012. It was while traveling in Mexico and appreciating the simplicity of a freshly prepared taco that Chef Luca realized the vision for what would become S.Y. Kitchen, “We have always cooked from what we have around us, Mexican cuisine is a beautiful example of this shared tradition practiced across many cultures around the world.” Sitting at Finley Farms, watching as produce picked in the afternoon is transformed before my eyes into culinary masterpieces, I can’t help but get excited about the evening’s menu. Always in the spirit of sticking to what’s local, Chef Luca and Finley Farms have shared a symbiotic relationship coalescing in the freshest ingredients Santa Ynez has to offer. Judging from the evening’s offerings, it looks as though Chef Luca has outdone himself while sticking to his vision where people come together and share the things that matter most in life—good food, good wine, and good company. Tonight, like most nights, you can find Chef Luca cooking up a storm but he also takes time to sit with us, hanging with Finley Farm owners Johanna and Chris. I take my place alongside them at the rustic picnic table and look over the evening’s offerings, excited to try his custom fall line up. With a glass of white wine in one hand and tempura of zucchini blossoms in the other, I feel right at home. That is of course if home was a farmhouse tucked neatly into Santa Ynez Valley among the rotating fields of crops and aromas of seared lamb, grilled yellowtail, and roasted quail all being ushered to my table.

Santa Barbara County seems to be booming with an ever-growing hotlist of dining destinations. Recently I sat down with local culinary mainstay Luca Crestanelli from S.Y. Kitchen and put him up to a cooking challenge. Can you re-create the effortlessly romantic, Italian vibe of the white country farmhouse eatery at an on-location dinner? He instantly called his friends at Finley Farms and before we knew it all of us were coming together for a family-style farm dinner of gourmet dishes, cold beers and an endless lineup of vino.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT 42 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Written by Celine Wallace Photographed by Riley Yahr

There are MANY buzzwords when it comes to healthy living; Ketogenic, Paleo, Gluten-free, Atkins, Flexitarian, Whole30, Veganism/Vegetarian, The Blood-Type Diet, DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). The list of diets, and their various restrictions, rules and regulations, goes on and on, but are they sustainable long-term? And is there a perfect one size fits all diet? Now, if you are someone who eats a certain way for religious reasons, such as Vegetarianism, which is strongly linked to religions that originated in India (Hinduism, Buddhism) or Vegan, because you make a point to not spend money on products that contribute to sustaining the agriculture industry, then that’s amazing—keep doing you! But many of us are confused by the enormous amount of conflicting information about what to eat, what not to eat, and which diet is best for us. I’ve long believed that the health industry is filled with half-truths, lies and misconceptions, which it uses to push its latest fad product. New eating plans and “superfoods” are constantly advertised as the keys to health, and as consumers, we can feel overwhelmed by choice and information. The food industry, and its constant stream of new products and nutrition gimmicks, is full of contradictory information, providing a highlight reel of diets, supplements and trends. For many years there has been a debate about what the one perfect diet is. Traditionally, a diet was simply the way that you ate. Over time it has evolved to mean “restricting your current intake of food to lose weight.” Regardless, of your preferred definition of a “perfect diet,”

there is an ever-growing body of evidence that suggests there’s no such thing as a single “best” diet—and that nutrition is a whole lot simpler than our fascination with fads would suggest. So, is there a single “best’’ diet amongst the buffet (excuse the pun) of choices available to us? The answer is simple—no! There is no physical way one perfect diet works for every single person on this entire planet. That’s impossible. Each person has a different set of nutritional requirements to keep him or her healthy. Many diets will sustain you or keep you alive. That doesn’t mean that they are good for you long term. Your perfect diet should not just keep you alive, it should help you thrive. It should give you the best possible intake of nutrients to allow your body to be as healthy as it can be. We are now more nutritionally starved than we ever have been at a time when we are consuming more calories than ever before, as the agricultural industry emphasizes quantity of produce over the quality of produce. Because the vegetables we buy at the grocery store are not nutrient rich we seek nutrients from other foods, and too much of them. But, if I have led you to be further confused, don’t fear! When you cut through the headlines, marketing campaigns and studies, you’ll find that most experts concur on a few fundamentals of nutrition: that you should avoid processed foods and focus on natural nutrient-rich foods. Examples of these would be vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, and plain water, which experts across the board agree should make up the majority of what people eat and drink. If there is such a thing as a “best” diet, that’s it. Ultimately,

found on the outside of the supermarket shelves i.e. avoid the inner isles. So don’t beat yourself up if you have that chocolate bar as a midnight snack, just make sure the chocolate bar isn’t a midnight snack every night (and the size of that chocolate bar). We are ultimately a product of what we repeatedly do. One chocolate bar isn’t going to define us, however sometimes we need to decide: is all the work in the gym and exercise worth the small amount of gratification it gives us? One of the foundational pillars of holistic health is we are, in many ways, what we eat. The more informed and more conscious we are regarding the daily decisions of what we put in our bodies, the better our bodies will respond to what we ask of it. So, now that you know there is no perfect diet, what should you do? Simple—listen to your body and eat to that accordingly, it’s not a one size fits all scenario but rather a lot about trial and error and being able to happily maintain your food choices. Take these trends and fads with a grain of salt and make sure you aren’t living your life with a series of unrealistic restrictions to fit a mold of how you think you should live. We aren’t cookie cutter version of one another after all—Mmmm cookies.

WINE THERAPY

Written by Alexandra Sharova Photographed by Meadow Rose

When it comes to pampering oneself a good pour (read: full glass) of wine or a massage often does the trick. So when I heard about Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara’s new treatment, Vino Therapy, which combines these two wonders into one luxurious 80-minute long indulgence, I had to try it. Upon entering the Spanish-style spa I was given a tour of the impressive facility—from the steam room and its menthol-infused crystals, to the gorgeous tile accents around the locker room, everything is taken into consideration. The beauty definitely lies in simplicity. My tour concludes with a glass of refreshing Champagne, 44 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

once again reinforcing my awe with the flawless execution, from my greeting to the goodbyes. I head upstairs to the spacious lobby, equipped with an array of teas and juices. Yet the highlight lies beyond the space: the view of the glistening Pacific just past the rose garden acts as the spa’s backdrop. It’s impressive, to say the least. Dawn, my masseuse, with her gentle and serene presence, takes me to my Spa Suite equipped with hydrotherapy, a soaking tub, a burning fireplace, and the ocean view, peeking out from linen drapes. I’m ready to move in.

Dawn returns with my treatment options. Between a salt or sugar scrub, I opt for the latter, because sweets have always had a special place in my heart (and stomach). Next, I choose my scrub scent out of three vinotherapy blends from Santa Barbara Grapeseed Company: Pinot Noir, Rosé, and Champagne. Given my earlier taste of the bubbly, I continue on the champs path. Here comes the good part, and my first time experiencing a body scrub in a spa. Dawn goes over every inch (practically) of my body, from the shoulders to the toes, with the aromatic scrub. The beauty of this treatment is that you’re getting a massage and intense exfoliation in one, a win-win. Next on the agenda is the full-body massage, post-shower of course. Dawn works her magic for the remainder of our session, releasing some serious knots in the process, as I drift away to a dreamy state of euphoria. To my dismay, our 80-minutes, which felt much longer but also not long enough (because who really wants a moment of bliss to be over?), comes to an end. As I lift myself off the table I realize my skin has never felt so smooth. It’s like I’ve been reborn (no exaggeration). I slip on my plush robe and head to the ocean-view spa lounge to continue my day of self-care in paradise. All in all, if you’re looking for a pick-me-up that guarantees you’ll leave rejuvenated, this is it. Because sometimes you just need to treat yourself.

DIY FACE MASK Using a food processor or blender combine the following ingredients: 1 organic Persian cucumber, washed with the ends trimmed off 1/4th of a peeled organic avocado 2 tablespoons of locally sourced honey Blend until almost smooth and transfer to a bowl. Zest 1 organic orange directly over the mixture and gently fold in using a spoon. Tap a thick layer on to face, neck and dĂŠcolletĂŠ. Leave for 15 minutes and wash off. Cucumber is used for cooling inflamed skin, avocado to hydrate, honey has anti-bacterial properties and nourishes skin, and orange zest to brighten. Even though it looks like it would be a tasty dip, it is an even better mask.

EXFOLIATION

HYDRATION

Exfoliation is the most basic treatment to fight sun damage. There are two different forms of exfoliation—physical and chemical.

Hydration is a key part of sun damage reversal and keeping skin looking smooth, dewy and plump.

Physical:

Professional Treatments:

At home, I recommend using an effective exfoliant scrub 2-3 times a week. Also, Clarisonic is a power tool that works very efficiently. If you have one tucked away in a drawer pull it out and use it everyday.

Another option for when an increase in hydration is necessary is chemical peel blends that include exfoliating and hydrating ingredients such as lactic acid.

Chemical:

A good cleanser that has hydrating properties and a toner that balances the pH are key. As are a daytime moisturizer and a repairing nighttime moisturizer for face, neck, décolleté, and the delicate eye area.

A barrier of dead skin cell build up makes it harder for products to penetrate. A great jump start is to do a series of professional microdermabrasion treatments, which exfoliate and resurface the skin, allowing home care products to work efficiently.

Enzyme peels are a gentle, powerful and effective way to achieve smooth and clear skin. They rarely have any contraindications or side effects and are beneficial to all skin types. Enzymes in skin care are extracted from multiple fruit and vegetable sources; Skin Prophecy’s signature enzymes include cherry, blueberry, pomegranate, goji berry, and pumpkin. Routine enzyme exfoliation will lead to brighter skin and a younger appearance as it allows for deeper absorption of beneficial ingredients.

PIGMENTATION Pigmentation is a result of sun overexposure or hormone imbalance. A MUST is using physical sunblock of at least SPF 30. It’s best to reapply sunscreen every two hours and limit your time in the sun especially from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Professional Treatments:

Some of the most common options are microdermabrasion, dermaplaning, skin peels, and light therapy. Laser, LED (light emitting diodes) and IPL (intense pulse light) are technologies which show many benefits in reversing unappealing cosmetic changes due to sun exposure.

Skin Prophecy’s oxygen facial treatments restore moisture in the skin by employing pure oxygen along with 87 vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and amino acids. This powerful blend stimulates hydration, wound healing and cell activity.

Home Care:

A few of Skin Prophecy’s favorite ingredients you should look for in your skin care products are: Hyaluronic Acid is known as one of the most effective ingredients to hydrate skin. Acetyl hexapeptide-37 works with aquaporin 3, a protein found naturally in the skin, to regulate the way hydration moves between the basal layers of the epidermis and stratum corneum, which will improve overall hydration. EGF (epidermal growth factor) repairs, restores and regenerates tissue. It is great for healing wounds in environmentally stressed skin. Niacinamide, a potent form of Vitamin B-3, addresses dryness and dehydration simultaneously. Masks are also an excellent way to provide much needed moisture to the skin. One of Skin Prophecy’s popular masks is a Korean inspired bio-molecular mask that has a powerful unique blend of peptides, antioxidants, and brightening botanicals.

Home Care:

If you’re seeking natural products for skin lightening, the following are ingredients that naturally help cell turnover, lighten sun spots, and resurface texture of skin. Licorice (root of glycyrrhiza glabra) — Antioxidant, antiinflammatory

Skin Prophecy Clinic 1230 Coast Village Circle, Suite B, Santa Barbara 805-969-6454 skinprophecy.com

Resveratrol (derived from red grape skin and knotweed plants) — Powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory Arbutin (derived from bearberry) — Strong melanin production inhibitor Green Tea — Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory

Shades of Blue Photographed by Jacqueline Pilar Written by Kim Hashemi

Walking into interior designer Gwenn Bello’s home in Carpinteria, I can’t help thinking what a beautiful space it is. Within the first few minutes a sense of relaxation and peace overcomes me. Gwenn gives me a tour of her home where shades of blue, subway tile, and marble transport me into a different mindset, away from my busy schedule and to-do list. Entranced by the eclectic theme, soothing music echoing throughout and breathtaking views of the Santa Barbara Polo Fields, I am left comfortable in my seat, chatting with Gwenn about her passion for interior design. Having spent many years on the East Coast, Gwenn was drawn to Santa Barbara for its laid-back way of life. With a successful career in the fashion industry and a knack for interior design beginning as a young child, Gwenn came to realize that her calling lies in designing homes in a way that allows people to feel at peace–creating beautiful and harmonious spaces where lasting memories with loved ones can be cultivated and nurtured. Gwenn tells me about her recent projects, and I am eager to learn what goes into her design process. “Everyone has their own style, and I make sure that their vision and personality is expressed in their home. I want the best for my clients; I want their homes to be beautiful. I want them to come through the door every day and say ‘I’m so happy to be home,’” Gwenn explains. Through asking the right questions, and carefully evaluating her clients’ tastes, desires, and specific circumstances, Gwenn utilizes her expertise to design beautiful spaces with a focus on functionality, balance, and harmony. With a natural eye for design, Gwenn’s ability to find pieces is unbounded, regardless of her client’s budget or vision. Throughout our chat, her passion for design is discernible, and the consideration of her clients’ desires and needs is unequivocal.

Q: How would you describe your style? A: My style is very eclectic and I enjoy mixing old and new pieces. I love all things timeless, classic, simple, and beautiful. A couple designers I gather inspiration from are Mark Sikes and James Farmer.

Q: What makes you stand out amongst other designers? A: I really take the time to listen and appreciate what my clients have to say. That’s the most important part–getting to know what makes them happy and using my expertise and their vision to create a beautiful and functional home they love.

Q: Is there a place in Santa Barbara you are drawn to because of the beautiful interiors? A: Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore has beautiful interiors. I celebrated my birthday there a few years ago, fell in love with Santa Barbara during that trip and moved here shortly after.

Q: Describe yourself in three words. A: Passionate, enthusiastic and happy.

Q: What do you love about being a designer? A: I love being creative and get so much joy from seeing an empty room come to life. Seeing the look on my clients’ faces when they see their homes is so rewarding.

AN INSPIRED LIFE

It’s all about purpose at Jake & Jones boutique “If you’re not wearing something that’s inspiring you, it’s hard to live an inspired life,” says owner of Jake & Jones, Jennifer Steinwurtzel. Usually, when I go into the store, I am preparing outfit ideas in my head for an editorial photoshoot. But this time, I am preparing interview questions. Entering Jake & Jones, I am instantly inspired by the modern Santa Barbara aesthetic and selection of homewares and women’s and children’s clothing. The walls are lined with avant-garde yet wearable pieces, each with their own story. When Jen walks out to meet me she has a glowing presence and comes across as equal parts professional and playful. We head two doors down to Handlebar Coffee and choose a quiet spot in the shade to chat. She tells me what a crazy morning she’s had between taking care of her kids and trying to get to work. I am impressed by how she balances being both a mother of two young boys and a business owner. “I feel like we still, unfortunately, live in this sex-role driven society and that women feel the pressure to be everything…For me it’s always this trickiness of feeling guilty when I’m not with my kids and feeling guilty when I’m not with work,” says Jen. “I love when me and my kids are caught in these moments where we’re all together

and I’m not thinking about work, when I just get to be totally silly with them, whether it’s cuddling in bed, playing in the pool, or tickling each other.” She goes on to explain how involved her children are with the store and how she wants them to see her as a working mother. She describes Jake & Jones, named after her two sons, as a “fun family endeavor.” Jen emphasizes the importance of being inspired not only when it comes to fashion, but with anything in life. Before starting Jake & Jones, she was a yoga instructor. Her yoga background has been an inspiration for both the way she runs her store and the way she lives her life. “Part of my reason for creating this store is that I felt like l lived in Santa Barbara but I wasn’t really contributing to it,” she mentions. When I ask Jen about the store’s tagline “for the welltraveled, ever-curious woman,” she describes the type of woman she envisions shopping at her store and relates her to a yogi who is okay to just show up to the moment without knowing and allow her own inner self to be guided. “It’s a very vulnerable thing to do,” says Jen. She notes that this woman is not necessarily well-traveled in terms of where she’s been, she can be well-traveled by reading or through art or food. She is open and sees opportunity. “That’s what I want the store to be, I want people to walk in and feel inspired to be that part of themselves, to be reminded,” she says. We went on talking about what to look forward to in terms of fall fashion. Jen says the store will be carrying a lot more outerwear as well as launching Mara Hoffman who has been a huge inspiration to her. “I think the word I’ve been really thinking about for fall is purposeful...I think people should wear what they feel comfortable in. I’m a big believer in comfort but I always want to provide space for people to take a risk,” Jen says with a smile.

MALIBU COUNTRY MART 78 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

A Boutique Mall with Priceless Character Photographed by Jacqueline Pilar Written by Kim Hashemi

With the sun shining brightly on Saturday morning, a girlfriend and I head down south to our beloved sister city Malibu to spend the day at Malibu Country Mart. Arriving after a beautiful coastal commute, we are excited to fuel and nourish ourselves with SunLife Organics smoothies and acai bowls. With a menu composed of delicious and nutritious snacks, juices, and bowls, it’s difficult to decide on one option. Having the intent of fueling up for a fun day ahead, we decide on the protein packed Mystic Smoothie—blended with superfoods including spirulina and maca plus a young Thai coconut base to keep us hydrated throughout the day. To accompany our smoothies, we order the Dragon Bowl—a vibrant pink and hearty blend of dragon fruit, raspberry and mango, topped with granola, fresh fruit, hemp seeds, and coconut shreds. Enjoying our smoothies and acai bowl on SunLife’s covered patio tastefully decorated with plants, crystals and inspiring quotes like “be here now” covering the walls, we indulge in a little people watching, observing friends enjoying a good laugh over a smoothie, families spending quality time together, and couples boutique hopping hand in hand.

SunLife Organics

The Malibu Country Mart has an open and relaxing atmosphere, with intimate boutiques, an outdoor playground and various restaurants to satisfy any craving. Feeling hydrated and refreshed, we make our way throughout the Mart, exploring intriguing shops. We begin around the corner at Faherty—a clothing boutique whose mission is to create clothes for life’s greatest moments, the ones spent by the water, around a bonfire, catching waves, or watching sunrises. With just two locations in California, we feel privileged to explore the boutique. Sifting through lightweight linens and beachy attire, I feel right at home in Malibu, and personable associates make the experience noteworthy.

Double RL & Co

Sipping our refreshing smoothies as we stroll around, a gleam of light reflecting from amethyst crystals catches my eye and draws us into the Malibu Colony Co. Walking in, I immediately realize @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 79

that I have found my destination for at-home odds and ends—from Diptyque candles to decorative boxes—and more importantly, a place to find gifts for friends and family. Roaming around the Mart, we become fascinated by the window display and the chair lined with Beanie Babies at Canvas Boutique and Gallery—a two-story boutique that showcases contemporary art from creatives both locally and internationally alongside unique clothing pieces curated globally. We have a long chat with one of the owners, Arlington, about the history of Malibu and his intention behind opening the store. He shows us pieces from Malibu Collection, a line designed by him and his wife, Jac, which are manufactured in downtown Los Angeles. Arlington pulls a few pieces of clothing for us to try, and we immediately recognize the passion and attention to detail that went behind designing the line. Intrigued by the array of unique shops, we feel inspired to keep exploring. With bright and airy interiors, we are drawn to Burro—a boutique opened by California native Erinn Berkson. lining the store, I find everything from coffee table companions and handcrafted 14k gold necklaces to clothing and playthings for infants. My girlfriend selects a “Picchu the Alpaca” stuffed animal, and the Magic Bunny book alongside an adorable card for her nephew’s upcoming birthday celebration. I make a mental note of the fitness studios I want to try on my next visit, including 5 Point Yoga and Pure Barre Malibu. As exploring the Mart in almost a workout on its own, we find a bench to sit and rest our legs. I begin to think, with a spacious outdoor playground (complete with swings, sandboxes and a jungle gym), an upscale hair salon, remarkable boutiques, and outstanding restaurants, the Malibu Country Mart is truly a one-stop shop with something for everyone—a perfect day vacation, a place to run errands, shop endlessly, entertain children, and unwind from the stresses of the week. As we happily soak up Vitamin D, I spot a boutique called Victoire, which looks like it carries items that could accompany me on my upcoming travels around Europe. We soon learn that their Malibu

location is their only U.S. store, with other locations in big name cities including Paris, St. Barth, St. Tropez, and Portofino. I select a dress by Mes Demoiselles and mentally scratch that task off of my to-do list. We browse through a few more shops including Malibu Shaman, a Malibu Country Mart staple that has been in business since 1983. The metaphysical bookstore carries a large assortment of music, books, one-of-a-kind crystals, a variety of incense and oils, greeting cards, and candles. Last stop, Sunroom—an Austin based women’s clothing and accessory boutique that combines a West Coast inspired aesthetic with an urban sensibility. The boutique offers easy to wear and stylish pieces for every woman. After a long day of exploring and shopping, we’re ready to indulge in a feast. We head to Taverna Tony, an authentic Greek restaurant with a fun and inviting atmosphere. With the intention of having a full Greek experience, we ask the server to bring out what she recommends. We sit back and enjoy the live Greek music echoing throughout the restaurant, which excitingly turns into a dance party as the night progresses. Our meal begins with the taramosalata

dip—a red caviar dip combined with olive oil, lemon juice and onions which leaves our mouths watering and eager for our entrees to arrive. Planted comfortably in our seats, we enjoy glasses of Kouros white wine and good conversation until our server brings out our main course. For me, perfectly seared halibut with a light tomato sauce topped with spring onions and fresh herbs. My girlfriend has the lamb tenderloin—charcoal grilled and deliciously spiced with a light black peppercorn sauce. We give each other a quick glance indicating our satisfaction with the decision to leave the ordering to our server and dig in. Our palates are craving a sweet treat to finish the meal and we compromise with the bougatsa—a superb and delicate semolina custard pie in crisp filo pastry dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar. As the brisk night air settles in, we recognize our cue to make our way back up the coast for a restful sleep after a full day. We discuss our upcoming schedules and coordinate a plan to return to Malibu Country Mart to test out our yoga abilities and spend the day with family and friends.

TO SUR WITH LOVE Written by Ottocina Ryan

I know I am going to like this place as I pull up to reception. There is a swing hanging from the oak tree outside. The only thing stopping me from jumping on is my equal eagerness to get to the pool, lined with orange umbrellas and sparkling in the sunlight. I can already feel Carmel Valley Ranch bringing my inner child out to play. To celebrate the reopening of Highway 1, I took the coastal route up to Carmel Valley, with plans to stop in Big Sur on the return trip. Soon after checking into my spacious one bedroom suite, I step out onto the private balcony to get the lay of the land. Through oak trees, I catch glimpses of the golf course at the bottom of the hillside and mountains in the distance. After unpacking, I head straight to the pool, settling beneath a cabana where I’m promptly offered water and a pool menu. Carmel Valley Ranch is a relaxing place. It’s rustic, fun and unpretentious, yet refined. I slip into the jacuzzi overlooking the valley, the air smells like campfire smoke from the wood burning fire pit. If this is ranch living, I’ll take it. When the early evening sun turns to shade around the pool, I head back to my suite to prepare for the evening. I arrive at Valley Kitchen for dinner and am guided through the bustling restaurant and seated along a glass wall with unobstructed views of the valley. I sip a Smoked Lavender Martini while perusing the menu. I decide on Fisherman Jerry’s Catch—salmon served atop asparagus puree, power greens, and locally foraged wild mushrooms accompanied by a glass of Swing Pinot Noir, Carmel Valley Ranch’s wine label; only fitting as I can see the Pinot Noir vineyards from where I’m seated. Stepping out into the cool evening air, I stop by the pool to roast s’mores by the fire pit and chat with fellow guests before walking back to my room. Back in my

suite, I wrap myself in the cloud-like robe, get a fire going in the fireplace and watch the sunset illuminate the mountains as the sky fades to a pale pink. Before the sun rises the next day I am on a hike up Horseshoe Trail. I take in my favorite time of day among the wildflowers and trees. I smile as I come across another swing along the way to the peak. They’re everywhere, it’s like a giant playground for adults. Ready to relax, I head to Spa Aiyana where my masseuse Kaye leads me to a room with two treatment tables, all for myself. I can tell this is going to be good. To begin my Bee Beautiful body therapy she scrubs me down with a body polish made of honey, lavender oil and calendula from the property’s garden. Kaye then wraps me in a cocoon and massages my face with royal jelly. After rinsing off the scrub I emerge—metamorphosis complete—with skin softer than I ever thought possible, and return to the other treatment table for a honey shea butter massage. The next day, I say goodbye to Carmel Valley Ranch, not without one last swing over a lavender field in full bloom, and merge back onto Highway 1. 84 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

To my right, churning waves swirl around the rugged rocks far below. The natural beauty of the coastline makes it hard to resist every pullout. An hour later, driving through the gates at Ventana Big Sur, I feel instantly calmed like I’m entering a sanctuary. The driveway leads me through towering redwoods to the rustic yet upscale property, which was renovated and reopened by Singapore based Alila Hotels & Resorts just last year as their only North American property. Yes, it’s that special. After checking in with the most courteous staff I head through the lobby to enjoy the daily wine and cheese reception in the adjoining Social House—complete with a pool table and board games. I take my Humboldt Fog and red wine to the deck to soak in the view. Pristine swimming pools and lawns in the foreground segue into ginormous trees and white-capped ocean in the distance. Eager to see the rest of the property, I walk along the paths, making a mental note to return to the Japanese hot baths. Then, inside the vine-covered library, I sink into a leather couch. The room smells of old books and is the most authentically cozy building I’ve ever been in. Before dinner, I retreat to my room. The clean minimalist architecture melds perfectly with earthy touches of stone and redwood. Retractable walls give the option of creating more open space. Black and white photographs of Big Sur tide pools above the wood burning fireplace add an urbanized touch. Yet the highlight of the calming room is actually outside—the jacuzzi on the glass railing patio. With views of only an expansive meadow, trees and the ocean, it’s heaven. It’s a third of a mile walk to The Sur House for dinner. I pass deer wandering on the path below me and a wedding site that would make anyone want to recreate Sean Parker’s wedding. The restaurant would have been worth a 10 mile walk thanks to its ambiance, tastes-as-goodas-it-looks food, and views of the sunset. @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 85

I begin with The PCB—tequila, mezcal, lime, passionfruit, pamplemousse liqueur, and lime salt. I sip the delicious concoction while perusing Chef Paul Corsentino’s four course ‘Taste of the Season’ menu; each dish sounds as intriguing as the last. I start with green gazpacho, followed by grilled octopus. Then, with perfectly timed service, my main course Alaskan Halibut arrives. And it is still moving. Well the benito flakes sprinkled atop are at least. I ask the server and he explains that it’s the thinly shaved fish skin reacting to the heat. I finish off the meal with a light pavlova topped with fruit compote, mascarpone cream, lemon basil sorbet, and a dried lemon slice. I can barely wait to return to The Sur House the next night. After morning yoga on the deck, excited to see where some of my previous night’s meal originated, I meet gardener Peter for a tour of Ventana’s tiered garden. He explains their gardening system with immense passion. As we walk around he offers me a white sage flower to try; it tastes like honey. He shares stories of The Birdman, a legend in Big Sur, who gave Ventana their chickens. He lets me pick multicolored carrots and explains the medicinal benefits of lovage. We harvest beets and thyme which I get to take home. I leave with a bounty of vegetables, herbs and newfound knowledge about gardening. 86 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

At Ventana you feel immersed in nature yet in no way roughing it, I mean there are several pools to choose from. I spend the afternoon between the clothing optional Mountain Pool (when in Big Sur) and the infinity hot tub, which sits amidst towering redwoods and is quite possibly the most tranquil place on earth. Throughout my stay, the decks and pools with expansive views were too hard to part with. As much as I love hiking in Big Sur, I didn’t do more than the two mile loop that surrounds the property. I typically travel to explore a location, see everything and go go go, making the hotels I stay at a means to an end, not the destination. And while both Carmel Valley Ranch and Ventana Big Sur are in absolutely beautiful locations, the hotels themselves are enchanting destinations that aim to help you relax, disconnect from work and reconnect with your inner child.

Written by Alexandra Sharova Nothing cures the post-summer blues like a getaway with your best friend. Although it’s not an escape to the South of France, a weekend in our neighboring “big city” is enough when you’re exploring with your partner in crime. So I got my girl, her dog, because Kimptons are dog-friendly (yay!), and we drove down south for the most Los Angeles weekend we could have—without acting like tourists. Our first stop is Hollywood, where legends never die, and struggling actors wait tables at 5-star restaurants. We pull up to the Kimpton Everly Hotel, strategically located a block from the famed Hollywood and Vine intersection. The clean, modern design is not quite inviting, it’s cool. This is Los Angeles, after all. With sweeping views of The Pantages, Capitol Records, the Hollywood Hills, and for those with 20/20 vision, glimpses of the Walk of Fame stars, it’s the place to be. The suite is minimal, yet it totally works. Who needs grand wall art when the highlight of the room is an unobstructed view of the

The king-sized bed is perched on a chic wood platform with crisp white linens atop, and although it’s beyond comfortable, the decorative-pillow adorned couch that leans against an impressive window is the most coveted spot in the room. Our puppy pal, Calhoun, agrees as he opts out of the bed the hotel provided for him (yes, they take their dogfriendly policy very seriously, and it’s such a treat for dog parents), instead taking a seat on the minimal navy couch. In keeping with the “views for days” theme we settle in on plush black chaises on the rooftop pool deck, to catch up on some work (read: snack and drink wine in the sun). From the calming breeze to the skyline, this is the place to be. Our friendly waitress brings by avocado fries and a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, while dropping some major news: the Everly, as all Kimpton hotels do, offers a complimentary “social hour!” We ditch the breezy scene for the Ever Bar, strategically located in a living room-type space...That is, if your living room has floorto-ceiling windows, an antique-inspired pool table, mismatched leather chairs (yet each one appears to be the best seat in the house), and a compilation of wall art that’s absolutely Pinterestworthy. Three rosés later we exchange WhatsApp contacts, say our goodbyes, and head to Sugarfish for sushi (a must if you’re in LA). Next on the agenda is a night on the town at 1 OAK Nightclub. After a very eventful night, we manage to pack up and head to our second hotel of the weekend, the Kimpton La Peer. Our new destination involves a bit of driving (hello, infamous Los Angeles traffic) and a neighborhood change, to West Hollywood. Blue tiles cover the outside entrance in a vibrant fashion— fitting, considering we’re in the heart of the Design District, just steps away from Melrose and Santa Monica Boulevard. The lobby, oh my. Overwhelming conic columns meet concrete walls, a vertical garden wall is juxtaposed with a curved brass ceiling accent, and each nook is composed of unique furniture with velvet, paint-splatter, and gold playing subtle accents. Calhoun, we are not in Santa Barbara anymore...it’s more like we’re in a chic gallery. In every detail, it’s apparent that LA-based designer Gulla Jónsdóttir, was taking inspiration from the surrounding neighborhood, from the fashion to the high-end furniture showrooms. It’s model WeHo. A tour of the inviting pool later, we get to our room, and I’m ready to copy everything for my next apartment. A grey, white, and black palette dominates the room, while warm wood pieces break up the contemporary vibe. It’s Cali-cool. I’m torn on my favorite part of the room: it’s has to be a tie between the Jeff Koons-like gold balloon bunny and the massive soaking tub (that provides a muted view of the bedroom).

Post-neighborhood exploring, we arrive at Viale Dei Romani, the hotel’s signature restaurant that melts California’s best into traditional Italian dining. The combo works, as nearly all of the tables are occupied, in large by locals who flock for the delectable carbs. We take our waiter’s recommendation and order the Pasta alla Piastra, coined the “world’s best bolognese,” a bold move, if you ask me. A king salmon tartar and an endive blue cheese salad later, our pasta comes. Note: it looks like a lasagna on its side, but in fact, the dish is composed of layered airy flat noodles with a rich bolognese sauce. This brazen concoction comes sans cheese, but if you ask nicely you can get parmesan on the side. After devouring every last bite, I can without a doubt say that I also ate my words—sorry Italy, this one’s the winner. A couple wine glasses and French 75s (my drink du jour) later we meet with some friends at The Highlight Room, a trendy rooftop lounge. We rub shoulders with celebrities’ kids and Instagram influencers while sipping on bottle service cocktails with mainly twenty-one year olds. It’s an experience, and we fully soaked it in (free drinks included). While our first day’s location lives and breathes a “less is more” mentality, the second opts for “more is more,” and both are fabulous in their own right. Would I do an LA weekend again? Maybe in a year...when I’ve recovered from the madness that is Hollywood. The hotels however, I’d go back any day of the week—preferably at five o’clock, for rosé and mingling in the golden hour glow.

Savoring

OREGON WINE COUNTRY

Written by Hana-Lee Sedgwick 94 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

“Everything is SO green,” I remark to my husband, Nick, from the passenger seat of our rental car as we pass tiny towns with populations the size of some high schools. We’re en route to McMinnville in Oregon’s Willamette Valley, where we’ll spend the next couple nights at a brand new boutique hotel, The Atticus Hotel. I gaze out the car window as we whiz past cows enjoying green pastures, vineyards with brightly colored green cover crop, and miles and miles of gently rolling hills displaying different shades of green. We’re certainly not in Southern California anymore. We left Portland earlier this morning and, eager to taste some pinot noir, planned ahead to stop at a couple of wineries along the way. We are in Oregon Wine Country, after all. Our first stop of the weekend is at Big Table Farm, a working farm and winery off the beaten path outside of Gaston, a town which I notice has a population of less than 700. I comment that we have no cell reception, and while Nick looks slightly panicked for a second at the thought of being unavailable for possible work calls, I welcome a rare break from the connected world. We pull into the dirt driveway of the 70-acre farm, a trail of dust following behind us, and are greeted by two friendly dogs and an indifferent goat, providing us a glimpse of what life on the farm looks like for owners Brian Marcy and Clare Carver.

Though we could have easily spent another hour there, we say our goodbyes, load up the wine we’ve purchased, and hit the road again. Before we know it, we’re exiting toward McMinnville—a charming and quaint town, with a maple tree-lined main street filled with historic brick buildings that are now home to tasting rooms, restaurants, and shops. A block from the main drag, we spot the four-story Atticus Hotel. It stands out with its contemporary exterior painted white and dark gray, yet doesn’t seem out of place thanks to its historic-looking facade. The chic lobby has a moody ambiance that is classy and inviting. Stacks of books sit upon wooden coffee tables surrounded by deeply hued velvet sofas and slate gray walls—the darkness of which is offset by the natural light pouring in through the large arched windows. There’s local artwork on the walls, as well as live plants scattered tastefully throughout. I dig it. We make our way to the front desk that doubles as an espresso bar and are immediately welcomed by two women who get us checked in, then offer us a complimentary glass of sparkling wine. We happily accept and, drink in hand, head to the elevator to our fourth-floor room.

As if knowing why we’re here, the dogs lead us to the modest farmhouse which also serves as the tasting room. Inside, we taste through a line-up that includes an outstanding rosé, expressive chardonnay, and several delicious pinots while chatting with Clare, who is friendly and witty with a down-to-earth vibe that I’m immediately drawn to. Just as our welcome committee dogs, whose names are Clementine and Levi, show us several impressive tricks, we realize the time; our hour-long tasting has flown by way too quickly and Clare and her team need to get the farm crew’s lunch ready.

@ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 95

As the elevator doors open, I notice the floor mat reads “Friday.” How cute, I think, that they swap out the mat to align with the day of the week. It’s the first of many small, curated details at The Atticus, I would come to find out.

The room feels oddly familiar, like I’ve been here before, but maybe it’s just the small “homey” touches, like books I might actually read, that make it feel more personalized than a cookie cutter hotel room. In fact, no two of the hotel’s 36 rooms are the same.

We open the door to our suite with a large, old school key adorned with a black tassel and walk into the chic, inviting space. I set my Champagne flute down on the table near the window before looking around our home for the next two days. There’s a living area with a couch and fireplace, and on the coffee table, a dish with local hazelnuts and walnuts set beside a nutcracker and a stack of books. I pick up one of the books and find a note tucked inside explaining the book selection has been chosen by a local.

Large barn-like sliding doors open to the minimalist bedroom where Nick immediately plants himself on the bed with his sparkling wine. As I unpack, I notice the built-in, temperature controlled wine fridge and am immediately impressed and glad to see it. How convenient! Above it is a french press, coffee and tea, and bottle opener—all the essentials. We’ve been in the room for maybe five minutes but at this point it is already clear, every detail of this place has been thoughtfully and carefully selected. Everything serves a purpose, whether it adds character and functionality (like the Pendleton robes I can’t wait to cozy up in) or showcases the hotel’s ties to the local community (like the Flag & Wire coffee made right here in McMinnville—also functional). After polishing off our glasses of sparkling wine and taking a few minutes to relax on the couch, we head downstairs to explore McMinnville. For the rest of the afternoon, we wander around downtown, popping into a shop or two before our dinner reservation at Thistle. I’d heard this is one of the top restaurants in Oregon and, being a huge fan of all things food and wine, was excited to try it. We arrive ahead of time to grab a drink, finding two stools at the tiny bar next to the restaurant, which is housed in a building from the 1880s. Within minutes, I’m sipping a craft cocktail made custom for me by Patrick the bartender, who obviously saw the torn look on my face when eyeing the cocktail list and asked if he could make me something. Though I don’t know what it is exactly, it’s reminiscent of a French 75, so he clearly read me well.

96 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

We chat with the couple sitting next to us at the bar, and being locals, they fill us in on which wineries are their favorite as we mention we’re planning to go wine tasting the next day. Before we can finish our conversation, our table is ready, so we bid them adieu and walk a few steps into the restaurant. We sit at a table next to the window in the simple and unpretentious space, perusing the wine list as we glance up at the menu which is handwritten on a large scrolled piece of paper on the wall. Nick and I both feel an immediate air of disappointment that we can’t order one of everything. Alas, we settle on a few items, like pork terrine with pickles and mustard and gnocchi with fava beans, and proceed to enjoy a long dinner of nose-to-tail, farm-to-fork dishes that leave us completely and utterly satisfied. After a restful night of sleep, we wake up to the slightest hint of morning light coming through below the blackout curtain I didn’t close all the way. Glad to see the sun out after yesterday’s cloudy weather, Nick and I slowly get ready to tackle a day of wine tasting in the Willamette Valley. First on the agenda, though, is coffee and food at Community Plate a few blocks down. It’s early, yet the place is already bustling—a good sign. We order at the counter, take a seat at one of the communal tables, and within minutes our lattes and food are ready. I sip my hazelnut milk latte made with house-made vanilla syrup, relishing the creamy sweetness that lingers on my tongue. It’s not my usual order, but Oregon produces 99% of the United States’ hazelnuts and I can’t help but feel pleased with myself for trying it. As we enjoy our first bites, I look around and take in the lively, casual restaurant, filled with out-of-towners and what I would guess are faithful

regulars. I ask how Nick’s biscuits and sausage gravy dish is as I savor my perfectly cooked scramble, each delicious bite showcasing the perfect ratio of bacon, veggies, and goat cheese. Just the fuel I need for the day. While we’ve just scratched the surface on Oregon Wine Country, the permanent smiles on our faces as we pull away from The Atticus on our way to taste more wine is proof that we’ve already fallen a little bit in love with this place.

SEE YOU SOON, PUNTA MITA Written by Amy Dong

@ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 99

I

t’s a Tuesday. The sun is sinking slowly to the horizon where hues of orange meet the Pacific Ocean. A light breeze rustles the nearby manzanita trees and the salty air fills my lungs. I’m standing along the shoreline waiting with unmatched anticipation. With cupped hands, I receive a tiny, dancing, newborn sea turtle from a sea turtle conservationist. The epitome of a bucket list moment; I stare in wonder at the creature resting between my index finger and thumb. After soaking in every precious moment, I place my baby sea turtle onto the sand and watch in admiration as it crawls towards the ocean, biologically imprinting so that it can return to this very beach in fifteen years to lay its own eggs.

Two days earlier, my friend and fellow guacamole connoisseur, Ottocina, and I arrived under a canopy of tropical greenery to Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita, just a quick 20 miles from Puerto Vallarta. We entered into 100 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

a massive palapa, that serves as the most authentic lobby to date. Promptly welcomed like old friends with house-made tortilla chips, fresh and glorious guacamole, and the region’s signature tequila swirled with freshly pulped mango; three minutes in and all my expectations had been exceeded. After settling into our cozy and classic casita, we set off to explore our blissful surroundings. The property sits at the edge of the Punta Mita peninsula, sprinkled with manzanita trees (housing the occasional iguana) and surrounded by dreamy white sand and hammocks swaying slowly in the breeze. The resort honors the Mexican state of Nayarit with each aspect of the culture-driven property, built to fit perfectly to the twists and turns of the land. After several hours of leisurely exploration, we arrive at Aramara, the resort’s contemporary Asian restaurant. We settle into our table with an ocean view to witness our very first Punta Mita sunset and order hand-crafted mezcal cocktails which arrive adorned with edible regional flowers. Our waiter suggested the Hot Rock to start, and intrigued, we agreed. Minutes later, an actual hot stone was placed in the center of our table for us to sear our own fresh caught sashimi. Bold, unique, and Asian fusion inspired flavors were present throughout the entire meal complemented by amazing seafood—really redefining “catch of the day.” As the sun sank low and sat heavily above the waves, the sound of a conch vibrated lightly across the

entire resort. Our server came over to explain; the conch, sounded each night at sunset on the sands of the beach marks the end of the day; inviting guests to sit back and take account of experiences to remember and feeling to savor. We spent the next days floating between the Nuna pool, flaunting an infinity edge with sweeping views of the ocean, and the Tamai pool, a secluded adults-only destination tucked away in greenery on the edge of the property. The Tamai pool became a personal favorite with its charming cabanas and poolside sushi bar (I mean, come on). Lackadaisical afternoons consisting of mezcal margaritas, fresh guacamole, and visits to the beachside gelato shop left absolutely nothing to be desired. Rarely would I describe a property as innovative, yet Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita constantly strives to curate a unique and memorable experience for each and every guest. For us, that entailed sunrise yoga followed by a day at the Apuane Spa. We wake from a peaceful night’s sleep with our patio doors wide open to views of the Pacific and sounds of the peninsula slowly waking up. Sunrise yoga takes place on The Rock, a bluff that sits just above the waves (think as perfect a perch to do sun salutations as to say your vows). We lay down our mats facing the ocean and flow through a series of poses to slowly wake up our bodies and ground us to the moment. In sync with the rising sun, cue bucket list moment #2. As we wrap up yoga with a few tranquil minutes of meditation, I take a moment to appreciate the authenticity of Punta Mita. The culture is tangible and the beauty unparalleled. Following yoga, we wander in our post-meditative state to the Apuane Spa for a continued marathon of relaxation. Before my treatment, we take advantage of the spa’s impressive amenities, including three side by side pools each with different temperatures to target muscle relaxation.

The treatment room is a minimalist’s dream, complete with a private cement outdoor shower. My Punta Mita Massage stems from traditional Mexican relaxation techniques and I can see exactly why. Previously, I knew that tequila was for loosening up, so to speak, but I never through it might do the same for my muscles topically (I might even have to try this one at home). As I float off into a dream like state to the scent of traditional Mexican essential oils combined with a tequila infused oil, I can’t help but wonder if this will go down as my most blissful day. To close out our final night in Punta Mita we settle into a table just feet from the breaking waves on Las Cuevas Beach, at Bahía by Richard Sandoval. In addition to inventive flavors and freshly caught seafood, I sample the property’s coveted and innovative vegan menu. We start off with the Wood Grilled Avocado and Vegan Caesar Salad which absolutely do not disappoint. The caesar is surprisingly creamy and honestly what’s not to love about a grilled avocado. Next, we share Pacific Seafood Linguini and Vegan Surf & Turf. As a mostly plantbased eater, I am somewhat biased, but Ottocina can vouch for me; the Vegan Surf & Turf was amazing. As the conch sounds to the setting sun, I try to weigh the plausibility of staying forever. And while I can’t quite swing it, I know that this will be a moment I will return to for years to come. While I was initially drawn to Punta Mita’s mouthwatering chips and guacamole, I now realize that this experience encompasses much more. The collision of culture, natural beauty, and authenticity create a truly unique feeling. It is one of those sensations that we don’t quite have words for yet, like that feeling of absolute lightness right before you fall asleep. As we sit watching the moon rise, with this rare lingering sensation, I know that I’ve made my imprint in the sand and I will be back.

RHODE ISLAND ROAD TRIP HIS: As the sun started to set, transcending from blue to cotton candy skies, we began our descent into Boston Logan International Airport. Eliza and I were on a mission to get our ride for the weekend and head to Newport, Rhode Island. Awaiting us in longterm parking was a Land Rover Discovery HSE. I had driven it off-road during the Land Rover Driving Experience in Carmel-by-the-Sea and was excited to test drive this model on pavement. We loaded our luggage and were on our way. The Discovery HSE was just as comfortable as I had remembered from my time in the mud and ruts last October. The cockpit was exceptionally well appointed, Eliza and I quickly mastered our settings, engaged the massage option, rolled down the windows, turned the music up, and headed out on the highway. We arrived at Gurney’s Newport Resort & Marina. After taking a moment to breathe in the sea air, we hunkered into our corner room facing the ocean. In the morning, we’d awake to the sight of boats sailing, leaving ripples behind them. I grabbed an espresso at the lobby coffee bar, Corso Coffee, before heading to the gym and to scope out the indoor heated pool. I try my best to stay active when I’m traveling; Gurney’s outdoor bootcamp and circuit training classes made this exceptionally easy and fun. With my morning workout complete, we got ready and headed out for breakfast and to explore Newport proper. As a coffee-junky, Empire Tea and Coffee was the perfect first stop. A zucchini muffin, an oat-latte and a heavy-duty red eye and we were back on the road. 102 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

Up next on our self-guided tour was a visit to Audrain Automobile Museum. Located in the middle of the action this showcase is owned by three private collectors and includes more than 250 fine and rare automobiles. The exhibitions are curated roughly every quarter. On display were, Sweet Rides | Summer Fit with cars fit for summertime in Newport, along with custom surfboards from local artists. More than just observing the cars in the museum; there are multiple car-centric events throughout the year. Through October, on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. the Audrain hosts Cars & Coffee where locals come out to show off their own collectibles. I learn that the biggest event of the year is the summer gala. Held on August 31, this year’s theme was “Vintage Circus,” hosted by Jay Leno and Donald Osborne and presented by Louis Vuitton. If simply walking around the automotive artwork isn’t enough to get your motor running; I suggest calling Newport Classic Car Tours for an hour Ocean Drive tour in a classic Buick convertible. Though it was difficult for me to part from a 1946 Ford Super De Luxe Custom Convertible, in black with red leather interior and a 1973 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser in pearl white, it was time for us to refuel around the corner at local’s spot Cru Café. Following a delicious and highly recommended breakfast, Eliza took to the wheel literally and figuratively. @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 103

HER: While Audrain Automobile Museum was a bucket list item for Tyler, I found myself picturing the wind in my hair as I cruised in a 1959 Fiat 600 Jolly outfitted in candy apple red paint, a tasseled cloth roof, and whicker interior. Newport has a way of letting your imagination run wild. For instance, next on our itinerary was The Breakers. As we meandered the Vanderbilt mansion, once the wealthiest family in America, we thought about the parties that must have been thrown, the summer soirees that would have surely been beautifully curated and so fittingly Newport. I imagined dating Tyler in the 1800s. Humoring me, he quipped that his horses were waiting to take us back to Gurney’s. Returning to the hotel early evening, we sipped cocktails along the water at The Pineapple Club and enjoyed the beauty of a New England summer night. Drinks in hand; a Lobster Pink Smash for Tyler (Elijah Craig small batch bourbon, with lemon, watermelon, and mint) and a Blackberry Cobbler for me (sage infused Plymouth 104 | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2018

gin, St. Germain, with blackberry mure and lemon) we sat back and discussed which mansion to own and which cars would be parked in the driveway. With our dinner reservations at Scarpetta quickly approaching we headed up to the room to get ready. Downstairs, we were seated on the deck adorned with string lights and situated seaside along Gurney’s private 22-slip marina. Dining among boaters who “dock and dine,” we began our indulgent four-course meal. When describing the menu, our waitress said we’d be able to see each ingredient used in every dish. This was immediately apparent in our first course of Tuna ‘Susci,’ which was marinated vegetables and preserved truffle wrapped with fresh tuna. Our next course included Baby Kale Salad, prepared with arugula, citrus segments, stone fruit, and champagne vinaigrette; and Burrata with asparagus, heirloom tomato, and pickled eggplant. Our third, and most indulgent course featured a simple and perfect Spaghetti with tomato and basil; Short Rib and Bone Marrow Agnolotti; and Roasted Chicken. We finished the meal with Crostata di Ricotta prepared with plum compote,

aprticot coulis, and burnt honey gelato paired perfectly with dessert wine. The next morning I’d sweat out the carbs at infrared sauna Higherdose at Gurney’s only to indulge in what was the best French toast at Scarpetta’s Sunday brunch shortly after. It was perfectly airy, drizzled with Nutella, and covered in fresh strawberries, blueberries, and bananas. As many wise people have said, no regrets. As our Choose Your Own Adventure weekend in the New England town came to a close, we took one last deep inhale of the ocean air, packed our bags into the Discovery, and left feeling richer for experiencing Newport’s storied history.
