Now, times have changed and being classy is synonymous with being slow. Everybody is talking of slow living, slow movement and ways to find yourself, and Santa Barbara is becoming the best place for this lifestyle. It’s not only about sun, ocean and a vibrant restaurant scene—it’s about locals who slow you down. The new Cajé and Lab Social space on Haley Corridor is run by such people. Coffee place by day and speakeasy bar by night, the space speaks to your heart from the very first step you make into it. It’s not about one more coffee spot in the city to grab and go, it has a touch that changes the coffee and cocktail scene. Cajé began as a hip student spot in Isla Vista

and grew into a coffee experience to remember. The owner, Ryan, picks and roasts beans at his roastery and can tell you everything about good and bad coffee. I believe every small business is a reflection of its owner and Ryan pours his heart into coffee. He successfully takes the art of coffee drinking to the next level with craft coffee cocktails, while also caring deeply about the planet’s future. At Cajé on Haley you can’t just grab a paper cup, instead leaving a deposit gets you a ceramic to-go one. It’s truly not about making lots of money at once, it’s about caring. The vibe at Cajé is relaxed—some guests are having a conversation, some are enjoying their coffee art, the guy next to me is learning another language with a bunch of memory cards. All surrounded by flora and the atmosphere of exfactory space. Again, it’s about giving respect to the past instead of new construction.

Co-owners Ryan and Sean say that they were sure of opening in this space, built in the 1920s, the first time they saw it. They were set on the old wooden ceiling and more importantly, the history behind the walls; one of the first bars in Santa Barbara was located here. As I take a look at the Cajé menu, Ryan tells me the story behind the name of every signature drink. First of all, they all look like they belong in a cocktail art contest and each one is set to win a prize. It’s a sweet spot for the Instagram addicts, as every drink is worth a thousand likes. Bela Rose is not an ordinary matcha story, it’s a high bohemian glass decorated with rose petals with pomegranate ice cubes inside.

Tw i s t Yemen is a mocha latte with a full-bodied creamy taste because of the coconut milk, and it’s an homage to the port in Yemen called Mocha where coffee tasted like chocolate. Twist is a cold brew lemonade with a raspberry ice cube, and it embodies a plot twist—the ingredients that you think could hardly taste good together in fact pair incredibly well. I chose Burnout—a latte with bourbon syrup, a ginger sea-salt rim and activated charcoal. It teleports me to sitting by the fireplace at my favorite hotel in the snowy mountains. The drink evokes that warm, peaceful feeling that keeps you seated on the sofa with a book for hours.

Tw i s t e d O l d M a n ! My eyes slide down the cocktail list and stop at Luckys Revenge. Sean smiles and tells me a fairy tale. Once a rabbit ran into their garden and he and his wife decided to save him from the dogs and give him a warm place to stay in their house. The idea of a rabbit running through the vegetable garden turned into a fresh and bright cocktail. Carrot and lemon juices, house chamomile syrup, and celery bitters are mixed with ginger and gin. With each sip I can imagine a little rabbit running through the greens. Speaking of locals, it’s a place where they support each other, share and provide the best they can. For example, you can order bites from Sama Sama and Corazon Cocina. Whenever you choose, just take your time, slow down and give yourself a chance to be a part of the unique story. * C a j e O n T h e We e k e n d r i n g s & b ra c e l e t s , J u n i p e r

Passion is felt in every detail. To make the perfect pineapple syrup for their drinks, Ryan and Sean roasted pineapples in different variations to find the ideal one. Rosemary for the cream in Cajé Thai Tea is from a friend’s garden, which means totally organic. Whatever favorite drink of yours you can think of—it’s here but taken to the next level and transformed into art. While you enjoy the ‘coffee MOMA,’ you can pick up on hints about what happens here after the sun goes down. The black and white photographs on the walls are clues to that when the clock strikes 5:30 the space becomes Lab Social, a speakeasy bar where the mixology is on a scientific level. 20 years of mixology led Sean to share his ideology with locals in his kind of place. He creates ‘stories’ five days a week, you can’t just call them ‘drinks.’ This is not when in the middle of a party you order one more margarita. othing says “Modern Times� quite like an all-vegan restaurant/ bar that serves craft beer and a delectable assortment of ecofriendly bites. Modern Times Academy of Recreational Sciences, which opened in June, is a retro paradise tucked behind a couple of our other favorites on State Street, Shaker Mill and Cubaneo, to complete the tropical trifecta.

First impressions of the Santa Barbara brewery: tropical foliage meets rustic copper wall decor is exactly the kind of post-modern vibe I would hope for when sipping on a beer called Star Projector. The space (pun intended) lets in natural light and provides ample room for both inside and outside seating. The ceilings strung with plants make me feel as though I am in a jungle, yet the walls create the ultimate throwback with gold-coated sculptures of Buzz Lightyear and Pez dispensers amidst a wall of antique keys. In other words: a 90’s tropical bliss. And what could make that even better? Beer. My seat of choice, the bar, wraps around into the main dining area, continues outside for an open-concept feel, and displays 30+ beers on tap for your choosing. I start with the three most popular brews, dubbed “core beers,” to get a taste of what embodies the Modern Times brand. First up: Fruitlands, the beer for people who don’t like beer. This sour, made with passionfruit and guava, overcomes my taste buds with a “tropical fruit fiesta.” If you find it hard to catch a buzz when drinking beer, I promise you it won’t be difficult to accomplish with this sweet concoction. Next, Ice is a thirst-quenching pilsner that achieves the classic beer taste most of us have grown to love. You can find me sunbathing on the deck of a yacht with a cold can of Ice, to put it into context. Orderville: the quintessential IPA without too much hops. While I’m no big IPA drinker, this one was not a challenge to finish. Fruit-forward is my criteria for many consumable things, and boy does Orderville meet it! Aside from the “core beers,” I try the Star Projector: Tiki Edition, a sour with berlin, pineapple, orange, coconut,

and nutmeg. This frosty beverage takes me back to Kona, Hawaii, letting me relive all the feels of sipping a Painkiller at the beach club, (the flavor inspiration for the fruity brew). I don’t throw these words around this lightly, but the Star Projector is now one of my favorite beers, as it perfectly combined two drinks that I never thought possible. No ifs, ands, or hops. But if you think the beer sounds enticing, wait until you pair it with their creative dishes. “Vegan junk food” is what Justin, Modern Times’ general manager, calls their cuisine. “It’s what you would expect to find at a nice beer taproom,” he continues, “Except vegan.” I try Justin’s favorite item on the menu, the Croquettes, which are bites of “cheesy,” gooey potato deliciousness paired with a smokey ranch dip. Needless to say, comfort food definitely feels more comfortable when you know it’s vegan. Next up is the Kimchi Elote, where Japanese and Mexican food join forces yet again to create an unusually tasty twist on the classic elote snack to satisfy all of your cravings. I can taste each tangy pink burst of kimchi mixed with a double dose of kimchi mayo in every bite. At first glance, corn would not be the initial food on my mind to compliment this very specific taste, but Modern Times did not disappoint. himself through flight school and eventually became a pilot for PSA Airlines, the original California airline back in the 70s. How did you get your start in aviation? I started my career as a professional pilot, working for someone else as a charter pilot. Coming out of UCSB at 22 years old to be hired with a company that would basically pay you to travel the world was great. Not many other professions straight out of college would pay you a very fair wage to fly to Paris and sit there for a week with nothing to do other than what you wanted to do on your own time. If that isn’t the dream I don’t know what is. I got to experience things like waking up in Cabo on a trip for work, surfing that morning, and being home that afternoon in time to surf in San Diego or Los Angeles. What is the inspiration behind the name Latitude 33? There's latitude and longitude that run throughout the world, which is how coordinates are determined for GPS. The lines of latitude are lines that run east to west and west to east. The 33rd parallel is where we are in San Diego. It denotes where the company was started and where our roots are. Did being a UCSB student inspire you to become an entrepreneur in any way? Going to the University of California, Santa Barbara made me realize just how nice it is to live near the coast. It encouraged me to want to be successful and be the best I could. I would love to live in Santa Barbara and knew I wouldn’t be able to get there with a typical job out of college. I had to get creative. So I thought, what could I do to move forward economically and personally, to be able to, at some point call Santa Barbara home?

Inspired by his story and the new West Coast Safari excursion, I give Casey a ring to learn more about Latitude 33. Who has been your greatest inspiration? My dad was a pilot and he has always been my inspiration both professionally and personally. He came from humble upbringings in a Detroit suburb. When he turned 18, he joined the military and moved out to San Diego. One day he saw an airplane fly overhead and said, “I’d really like to do that, that seems pretty cool.” He put

Can you describe your typical day? I had my second daughter just over a month ago. So it’s waking up, helping the wife, and getting the kids ready. In general, I try to wake up as early as possible, get a couple hours of work done before the kids wake up, exercise to clear my head for the day, and then be at the office until the end of the day. I still do fly professionally, so there isn’t really a normal day to day, which I love about what I do. I’m not the kind of guy that can sit in front of a desk five days a week without getting a little stir crazy. I like the variety. What motivates you? Probably all of the normal cliché things. You want to have a good life for your family, and give your kids a better life than what you had. All in all, being directly responsible for turning out a product that we, as a company are proud of. I’m proud to say that we employ about 55 people throughout California. Growing up I never dreamed that a) I would be able to have a company like this, and b) be able to be an income provider for so many employees and their families. ONCE UP N A TIME eidi and Spencer. Speidi. Mr. and Mrs. Pratt. No matter what you call them, these names recall scenes of a mid-2000s golden age of fame, wealth, and excess. Perhaps the poster children for reality television as we know it today, self-indulgent and outrageous, Heidi and Spencer Pratt have waltzed on to society’s center stage once again, nearly ten years after the original Hills went off the air. In the last decade, Spencer and Heidi have become Central American dwellers, Carpinteria locals, new parents, and business owners, all leading them back to Los Angeles where they first made their names. For two

people who lived their lives on-screen, the action off-camera more than measures up to the plots we watched from our living room couches in 2008, and we are elated to see this duo make their re-entry into the spotlight. My phone blinks a Beverly Hills area code and I answer to Heidi’s cheerful voice, one millions have come to recognize, now greeting me directly. “Hi! We’re ready for you.” The two are multi-tasking, managing dogs, a toddler, and a business, all while willing to fill me in on the last ten years. Heidi starts at the beginning, with what brought them to Santa Barbara in the first place, telling their side of the stories tabloids once attempted to spin.

The premiere season of the second coming of The Hills, adequately dubbed The Hills: New Beginnings, finds Heidi and Spencer settled back into Los Angeles with a new baby, Gunner, and their dogs—the picture of domestic bliss. “Settled” and “blissful,” though, are terms that must be taken with a grain of salt when it comes to these two. Since the original run of The Hills ended in 2010, MTV’S favorite couple, “Speidi,” has had their share of hardships in and out of the spotlight. On a sort of attention high from living their twenties on

proprietors of their story and their past. Heidi continues, musing upon their time in Carpinteria. “I really miss it there. It’s close enough to LA but far enough away. I’m from Colorado so I love that small town feel. It gave me the best of both worlds.” The family has just returned from a trip to Heidi’s Colorado hometown of Crested Butte, a charming spot reminiscent of a mountainous, snowy Carpinteria, or so it seemed on her Instagram stories. These wholesome, family-oriented snaps paint a life much different than the one we once saw plastered on tabloid covers and television screens. They are a minute long testament to the life the couple now leads, a representations of the maturing they have done in the past ten, or even the past five years.

THE RELAXED CARPINTERIA LIFE MAY HAVE OFFERED REPRIEVE FOR HEIDI AND SPENCER, BUT THE SPOTLIGHT NEVER CEASES SEARCHING FOR THEM. TV, “We moved to Costa Rica and spent all of our money,” Heidi remarks candidly. “Then we called Spencer’s parents and they had a beach house in Carp. We were supposed to stay for about a month and we never left. We lived there for seven years,” she says with a laugh, but matter-of-factly. Heidi and Spencer are nothing if not the

The relaxed Carpinteria life may have offered reprieve for Heidi and Spencer, but the spotlight never ceases searching for them. With the reboot of The Hills underway, Heidi, Spencer, and their son Gunner resumed old roles with a new set of values back in Los Angeles. “When we moved back to LA we had Gunner and The Hills was starting back up. It was like we were relaunched into that LA life. That was a big readjustment because we’d been living such a slow paced life in Santa Barbara and then were thrown back into fame. Becoming a parent is a big adjustment, and then to do that while your life is being flipped upside down, or whatever you’d call it, going back to what it used to be. It’s a lot of different layers,” Heidi explains.

As if balancing new parenthood and a business was not enough, Spencer and Heidi were transported back into ancient dramas and feuds, resurfacing in the same fashion as the trends of yesteryear. “We didn’t even watch The Hills when it was airing, but stuff started coming up and now I feel like its at an all-time high—the craziness, the fighting. It brings up a lot of history and past triggers. Back then we were only given a certain narration and we just went with it because we loved the paycheck. Now it’s a different kind of show without having someone constructing the storyline. It organically grows based on how the relationships evolve. For us, though, we have Gunner and that’s our number one priority—being parents not being reality stars. It’s a challenge balancing both worlds and keeping family our number one priority.” These days, though, balance seems to be a skill they have mastered. Business now means much more to Spencer and Heidi than picking scripted fights and crying on cue. “[Pratt Daddy Crystals] is great because it gives us freedom, but it pulls us in different directions. We can’t just focus on the show, we have employees and inventory, it’s much more stressful,” Heidi says then steps away for a moment to tend to the dogs. Spencer seizes this opportunity to chime in,

“I’d much rather be a reality star, it’s way easier than managing a business.” Just then, Spencer’s phone rings, as if it was written in the script. “Speaking of, hold on, I have to take a business call.” It’s clear why the couple makes for such great TV. What comes next for this duo, newly trio, a coupling that many may dare to call ‘iconic’? The success of their reboot left fans begging for more, so the limelight on the Pratt family’s personal life shows no signs of dimming. “We start filming season two late October,” Heidi reveals, which means the public will be able to bear witness firsthand to Heidi and Spencer’s next steps in business and in family. Spencer, who was shown on New Beginnings’ first season as being wary of adding more children to their household, overperforms his answer when he says of their future plans, “Oh yeah, growing that family, lots of kids coming.” Heidi, who proposed the second or third pregnancy on the show, appreciates her husband’s mock-excitement with a giggle: “Great answer, great answer,” she applauds. As the conversation begins to wind down, I ask the couple if there is anything we have not touched upon, if there is any message they want to convey that was not adequately addressed before. Perhaps a parting word, a hint about what their future holds. Instead, in a charmingly on-brand quip, Heidi, ever quick on the uptake (and the business opportunity), chimes in the necessary Pratt Daddy Crystals plug. “Make sure you check out PrattDaddyCrystals.com. D

o you have extremely high standards and expect a lot from yourself day in and day out? Chances are you are a perfectionist. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having high standards, in fact, you should, because if you go through life entertaining anything without standards to compare it to, you are likely to live a ho-hum life, and nobody wants that! However, I want to address the other side of the perfectionism pendulum—when you get so worried about not executing something perfectly that you end up doing nothing at all. Sound familiar? Let’s paint a picture: you get out of a meeting with your client, full of energy and ideas about what you’re going to do next. You commit to a deadline for a proposal and designs—some kind of deliverable to move the project forward. In your mind it’s all crystal clear and you can’t wait to work on it. But as the date looms closer, something changes. You want it to be amazing, fantastic, and flawless. Even though your ideas are solid, you keep delaying the start of the process. The excitement that you initially felt begins to feel like dread. “I have to do more research, gather more information, find

I’ll get started tomorrow—I’ve got time,” you tell yourself. Finally, it’s the day before the due date. You’re now not only beating yourself up for potentially messing up a big opportunity, but also panicking and stressing to pull it together by the end of the day. I’d like to introduce you to the twins that just wreaked havoc upon your nerves and your work: perfectionism and procrastination. There are several common causes of procrastination, including: ▪ Complicated task anxiety ▪ Fear of imperfection ▪ Lack of self-confidence ▪ Priority confusion ▪ Lack of focus ▪ Indecision ▪ Boredom from minutiae To clarify, procrastination is not laziness. When people perceive a higher challenge than they feel capable of, they sidestep the discomfort through diversion. For example, when you delay completing a task that seems like it will take a really long time, only to realize that it took less time to do it than to think about it repeatedly. Because of the negative repercussions of perfectionism and procrastination, it is critical to break the cycle. For one, concern with the outcome being just right inhibits innovation and creativity. Also, you waste valuable time. And by “valuable time,” I mean it in the grandest sense, that you have a finite amount of time on the planet.

Do you really want to look at all your friends’ Facebook posts instead of writing the proposal for a potential new client? Here are some tips to beat perfectionism-based procrastination that stems from fears about how you will be judged or perceived by others: ▪ Get in touch with the value of what you’re doing. ne way you can spend your Valentine’s Day weekend is by sipping on the best wine our region has to offer by going to Andrew Murray Vineyards in Los Olivos, enjoying beautiful views accompanied by Pinot Noir and Jessica Foster Confections truffles. Or, you could go to the Melville tasting room in Hotel Californian right in downtown Santa Barbara. But, with so many options like this available in the area year-round, you can do these things any weekend. So why not try something different?

There’s one weekend a year (Presidents’ Day weekend, following Valentine’s Day) you could be drinking Melville wine on an ice rink next to a bonfire at The Resort at Paws Up in Montana. That is, after a six-course tasting dinner to kick off WinterFest, the resort’s wine and food festival where they invite chefs, winemakers, and a chocolatier from Southern California (mainly Santa Barbara) to wine and dine guests. All surrounded by a snowy playground available for you to explore through their endless outdoor activities. That is how you should spend Valentine’s Day Weekend. The first night ends at 2 a.m. soaking in the jacuzzi that sits on the balcony of my “Wilderness Estate Home” surrounded by gently falling snow. This humble abode is a 2-story, 3-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom cabin equipped with a full kitchen, a cozy fireplace, the comfiest leather couches, and if that wasn't enough, a Kia to ease your travels around the sprawling property. The next morning, we start WinterFest off with a truffle making demonstration taught by Jessica Foster. She explains her techniques and discoveries of flavor combinations while passing around bowls of silky chocolate and pans of truffles to taste. A crowd pleaser to say the least. Next on the carefully curated itinerary, which I had received weeks before arrival, is skijoring. I know that’s not all that common around these parts so I’ll save you a Google search: it’s skiing while being pulled by a horse. It’s much easier and more fun than it sounds, even for beginning skiers.

The next day’s cooking demonstration is taught by Chef Budi Kazali (owner of The Gathering Table in Ballard) and Chef Brooke Williamson (winner of Top Chef Season 14). It kicks off with hilarious banter and the story of Brooke’s first tattoo, and then they lead us through preparing uni risotto and crepes filled with eggs, collard greens, and prosciutto. “You didn’t come to Montana to lose weight,” Brooke jokes as Budi adds more butter to the risotto. Both dishes are just the comfort food the snowy forecast called for.

That evening we get a taste of the chefs’ dishes again at a six-course dinner accompanied by Melville wines. As the winemakers mingle with guests, I savor every bite of Brooke’s braised lamb shank congee, a dish I could easily eat every day for the rest of my life. The meal is capped off by a selection of

The next morning after breakfast, I am whisked through the snowy trees on a sled, pulled by a pack of the sweetest dogs. As we tromp through the fresh powder, spotting a family of deer every 15 minutes, I find they are just as hilarious as they are talented with chocolate and wine.

That night at dinner, I reflect on the WinterFest weekend: it was packed with snowy adventures perfectly balanced out by California comfort food and wine. Paws Up is an ultra-luxury resort without a pinch of pretentiousness, providing activities that highlight the beauty of the natural surroundings. t seems there’s always a reason to venture to LA, whether it be for a business meeting, some shopping, or just an easy break from the reality of the day-today. No matter the reason, if you’re going to be in La La land, you might as well do it in style. London style that is. And what better location to enjoy your stay, short or long, than The London West Hollywood where British elegance comes together with WeHo cool. At check-in I spot an adorable English Bulldog. It’s Wiston, one-half of the hotel’s official mascots (his brother is naturally named Churchill). The two can often be seen on the rooftop deck or during their daily walks around the property–a novel treat for guests. My spacious suite is a hybrid of midcentury modern and sophisticated simplicity. The sweeping balcony, equipped with a chic checkeredfloor, offers beautiful city views and plenty of room for an outdoor breakfast with a side of the LA Times. Yet the black and white mosaic-clad bathroom, with its grand tub has me dreaming of an evening soak, and it’s barely after noon.

After a quick meeting in Beverly Hills I return to the posh lobby of The London, which is now filling up with trendy guests on plush-velvet couches. Given its location and 110 luxury-seat viewing room, the space often houses celebrities and industry insiders, so be on the lookout because you just might spot someone from your favorite show...Another Hollywood pull, is the 11,000 square foot Vivienne Westwood-designed Penthouse, which happens to be the largest of its caliber in all of Los Angeles. Since my day is winding down I head to the bar of Boxwood Restaurant, for a pick me up. I order a grapefruit-gin concoction, aptly dubbed “London Calling,” and admire the British Art Deco design: stained-glass fixtures hang from a beamed skylight, traditional moldings adorn muted-grey walls, and the multicolored marble floor presents an elevated pattern, contributing to the swanky style.

Since the hotel boasts panoramic views from its rooftop, I make my way up to catch the setting sun. The city skyline is the ideal backdrop for lounging by the sparkling pool with some snacks and drinks from Boxwood on the roof ’s seasonally updated menu. Contributing to the cool vibe is a contemporary cascading fountain that depicts Winston and Churchill in technicolor glory. As if the cityscape was not reason enough to visit the tenth floor, the social program–ranging from live jazz to tabletop games set around cozy fire pits–does the trick. After mingling at the rooftop bar, I return to my comfortable suite for a pre-sleep soak in the glorious, marble bath. There’s something about bubbles that always helps soothe my busy mind. Another benefit to my mellow evening is that Boxwood Restaurant is fairly empty early in the morning, so I’m able to snag a window table. The area is overflowing with natural light, illuminating the exotic on-trend wallpaper. In an effort to stay healthy, I get a refreshingly tart green juice to balance out the rest of my rich order. The Crab Toast is a harmonious balance between crunchy and delectable creaminess, while the Smoked Salmon Benedict manages to squeeze in crispy bacon into an already heavenly dish. To avoid traffic, I get my coffee to go, snap a picture with the cutest hotel mascots on my way out, and hit the road. Although my visit was short, the metropolitan-meets-chill ambiance and impeccable amenities made it memorable, and worthy of a longer visit in the very near future. iri, let’s talk about that road you and your buddy Google Maps put us on in Corsica.

I’ve taken Dramamine on a ‘road’ in India. Bongabashed through savannah at night in South Africa, 4-wheel-drive. Been days without electricity or running water after a hurricane in deep Baja. I’m flexible. But what were you thinking, Siri? What was your plan to extract us, over those boulders on that can’t-turn-around, is this an abandoned fire lane, oh-God-a-signpost-for-hikers to megalithic caves, don’t-look-now unpaved, unmarked insider joke? But I’m getting ahead of myself. We will circle back and discuss it, though, I’m not done with you. This was not the vacation where everybody comes home tanned, vowing to stop overindulging. While dreaming and planning, maps and Fodor’s on the table, there were no truck convoys on the road. Middle-aged motorcyclists in tour gangs. No hail in late spring. It was travel buddy’s turn to pick the destination, and she’s a Francophile. I love France, too, and had never been to the Dordogne, home to small medieval villages, big cheeses, wondrous cave paintings. I was the one who added a week in Corsica, because, well, it looks like California and how great is that? I could not know Corsica guards her treasures carefully. That it would be difficult to find something other than bad pizza to eat. That we would never find a public toilet. That we would come to know the police station and the car rental agency a little too well. But Corsica’s landscapes seized my imagination and linger still. There are ways to do this island, best with private villa, private chef, personal yacht. We didn’t know that. We just didn’t know. We stayed on a beautiful farm and saw a family of wild boar cross the long lane into a cow pasture. A group of striped hoopoes with their cartoonish crests. We slept better than either of us ever remembered sleeping. We packed picnics and tooled around the countryside in our stick shift Renault, searching out another gorgeous beach. Not hard to find, but the access and parking came with their challenges. We came to appreciate asphalt a very great deal. Came to feel very emotional when a road was numbered and had two lanes. From the highway we saw postcard picture idylls and tried to figure how to get there. We tried roads that looked like driveways that descended into sandy hairpin turns of uncertain termination. There was an amazing highway past the jagged white cliffs of Bonifacio, bits of broken land strewn into the sea, possibly one of the most beautiful coastlines I’ve ever seen. Getting down to the beaches, however, often turned into a doubtful anxiety test, especially after the Siri-Google fiasco. We escaped that terror without a scratch, only to discover someone dinged us good in the parking lot of a grocery store. And so began a daily ritual of checking in with the car rental agency, to learn if they’d developed a price for the damage.

Daily we took names of various employees who assured us we’d receive a call after the holiday. Likely tomorrow. In the afternoon. Later. When Sebastian gets back. After the repair shop owner calls. It defined each day. Finally we asked the hotel owner for help. In the sunlit breakfast room, birds twittering in another perfect morning, he dialed and began a ritual conversation in Corsican that gave me more insight about the culture than any museum, open-air market, or beachside restaurant. A long and generous, cordial warm-up began. Yes, this was soand-so at such-and-such Farm. The clients didn’t speak very good French, he said. (Wait! I bristled. Eight years of Spanish, six of French, one of Italian, one of Danish, and this is my reward? I read Madame Bovary in the original. Please.) Oh yes, the owner continued, didn’t he go to junior high with us? Is he in today? No? Still racing the ponies up in Chantilly. Yes, saw it in the paper. Good-looking mare! Our outrage that you have to buy a drink of water on Norwegian Air was eclipsed. We had something new to dislike. We were officially in the circuit of filling out forms at the gendarmerie. In French. The next couple our lovely policewoman attended had also, not surprisingly, had their car smacked. We were in the middle of a language lesson that’s not in the book but probably should be: rental car damaged! See cultural notes. We stopped asking shopkeepers if we could use their toilet, knowing the answer. Every Corsican bush with any privacy whatsoever has been frequented before. We gave up on thin, charcoal-y pizza crust with undelicious trimmings and gave ourselves over to pastry. A lot of pastry. At a certain point…we stopped calling the rental car agency. Finally we discovered a little restaurant not far from the farm with a gorgeous garden, lots of fascinating playthings for children. Lovely lights and candles. A cat that waited for scraps. And the best food ever. Wild boar carpaccio. Homemade ravioli. Osso buco. Homemade olive oil. Homemade limoncello. Homemade chestnut cake for which we never developed a fondness, but accepted with affection on my birthday. We adjusted. If Siri mentioned a shortcut to save us nine minutes, we ignored her. We avoided the big tourist beaches. We found little restaurants still in business for 300 years, as atmospheric as you could ever want. Discovered fresh fish eateries at the shore. Reveled in the clear waters without jellyfish. We began to lose interest in the game: how much will it be? Will it be fair? We didn’t even discuss it. The day came to leave, and we did so, without buying any $30 olive oil or homemade soap. Had one last gelato and left without ever getting the price for the repair. Don’t have it still. Kind of wondering if it really happened any more. But if someone offers you a car and driver in addition to the private yacht, jump on it. *

TO T R A I P S E A L O N G PA C I F I C C OA S T H I G H WAY, past the bustling art scene of Downtown Laguna Beach, past the countless volleyball tournaments and sunning locals, is a luxury in its own right. But this word—luxury—is reinvented once I pull into the valet at Montage Laguna Beach. I am ensconced in expertly-laid stone and immaculate Brazilian cherry wood, my breath stolen by the view of the Pacific Ocean and pool below, revealed by a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows in the lobby’s bar. 80 | NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2019


The Montage, although fully renovated in 2019, has not lost a single touch of its classic coastal glamour. The plush couches and airy blue-and-grey aesthetic call me to settle in for a drink, but my better judgment reminds me that even greater marvels await in my oceanfront suite. Once I open the doors to my suite, I am struck by not only the sight of the ocean—ever-present, it seems, from all angles on this property—but also the 180-degree view of the property, the glistening pool, Studio restaurant, and its attached garden. Though I can’t put my finger on the exact notes, the room smells refreshed, unique. As if reading my mind, the bellman notifies me that each of the guest rooms features candles or diffusers made up of the signature scent created for the property, reminiscent of the coastal surroundings. I think to myself, between the complimentary bottle of Champagne waiting in my fridge, 24-hour room service, and the silky sustainable robes the resort custom commissioned, I sit in luxury’s lap within these four walls. That is, until my afternoon facial rolls around and I am introduced to the Montage’s new line of Valmont treatments. The spa is the aesthetic interpretation of the word “sanctuary,” and the Montage’s recent addition of the Valmont line only furthers this ambiance. With treatments named “The Masterpiece” and “The Majestic,” and a list of ingredients that includes sapphires and diamonds, the Valmont series personifies glamour within skincare. Anti-aging, collagen infusions, and glowing skin seem to merely be convenient side effects of those luscious 90-minutes in the treatment room. Opulent is rarely a word I would use

to describe a spa treatment, but in this case it barely does the Valmont facials justice. As I explain to my esthetician that I am constantly bouncing from Santa Barbara to Southern California locales, she remarks, “You don’t seem to leave the West Coast!” And why would I, when this exquisite slice of paradise lies a mere three hours down the road? Consistent with the theme of my stay, dinner at the resort’s contemporary Loft restaurant exceeds any expectations I may have held. A bottle of the Montage’s signature Champagne, Piper Heidsieck, is already perched in an ice bucket beside the table when I arrive. Before I have even popped a cheesy bread knot in my mouth, the waiter informs me that the kitchen is working on an order of the truffle fries with “baked potato dip” (a concoction whose ingredients I never want to know, but that I could nonetheless eat with a spoon) for the table, as he noticed that I favored the truffle fries I had at lunch by the pool. This attention to detail is a common thread throughout my sojourn at Montage Laguna Beach. From the moment I pulled through the valet, I had the sense that my notions of service, serenity, and sustainability were about to be blown out of the water. As my evening comes to a close, the bank of bay windows in the Loft allows me to watch the sunset over the resort’s sprawling grounds.
