SB LIFE & STYLE from the editor

T

hanks to the positive response I got on my letter from the editor in the January/ February issue, I get to share with you another excerpt from my “things I shouldn’t say at work” book!

One of the latest entries is from a couple weeks ago. While working on this March/April issue, which has a wellness focus, we were surrounded by healthy gadgets and snacks, mixed in with the ever-present sweets from Andersen’s, and I wondered out loud what would happen if we put the cookies that were on the table in the rose gold Hurom juicer we’d just taken out of its box. According to my colleagues this is not only frowned upon but downright wrong, as much as I want to try this out, I still haven’t done so. We ended up juicing locally grown carrots, dandelion greens, and kale from Ellwood Canyon Farms instead for a delicious and refreshing combo. Anyway what I have learned from putting together this issue, especially in the aftermath of the recent disasters, is that it’s import to put extra effort into your health. I encourage you to pick up a few tips from this issue, whether it’s putting down your phone and spending time with your family, making collard green wraps for dinner, or meditating. We could all make a small change that would make us healthier and allow us to enjoy our lives and optimize our time that much more. I hope you enjoy this issue and if you’ve ever juiced cookies please let me know, even though I’m eating carrots as I type this I’m still wondering.

y eyes follow along the windy road as far as they can see; they locate where the pavement holds the sky. The breeze softly blows through my hair as if it is sweeping another decade behind me each mile traveled. Decades soon become centuries and my mind can’t help but wonder about those who traveled this land before me, those who knew the land like the back of their hands and connected to it with the soles of their feet. I think back to a time when its inhabitants relied on stars and these beautiful red-tinted landmarks to my left to guide them to their destinations, instead of these road signs to my right. But today, it’s only the mountains in the distance and I, just before the sun begins winding down for rest.

Fire roasted swordfish, toasted oats, delicate squash, ver jus butter sauce

I make my way past the delta, miles of crops and soft grassy plains, and finally arrive at Blue Sky Center, a camping oasis tucked within the beautiful Cuyama Valley. As I step out of the car onto the dirt road, the serenity of silence wraps around me like a warm blanket and I am convinced that the years did in fact roll back on the way. I see prairie wagon-styled Shelton Huts, wooden picnic tables, hammocks, and Moonrise Standard’s full seven-course dinner, with ingredients from local farmers, being cooked over a fire—all surrounded by nothing but the wide-open landscape. The host, and Moonrise Standard co-creator, Alana welcomes me and offers me a cocktail: a sweet red concoction of fresh juices and whiskey swirled with a cinnamon stick. It’s just as refreshing as the country air. I engage in conversation with other guests, and we make our way over to the table displayed with appetizers such as salt cured lamb tartare and oysters. I pick up a charcoal roasted oyster topped with a creamy red sauce made from overripe Hachiya persimmons, splashed with barrel aged sherry vinegar, and paired with dried sage and rosemary. My taste buds are ravished in delight and I pick up another.

The sun soon sets and the sky blushes gorgeous shades of pink, deep orange and violet. The campsite glows in the light of candles, lanterns and the campfire. I make my way to the picnic table dressed in rustic elegance and take my seat on a handmade Native-patterned cushion. The flowers and candlelight set a warm and welcoming tone. A sweet and tangy Pinot Ver is served and shortly followed by a steaming plate of smoked-on-the-stock Brussels sprouts paired with a rich goose mayonnaise. The zesty mayonnaise complements the slightly charred sprouts very well. They quickly disappear, scoop by scoop, until only singed flakes remain. The next course is placed before me: a fall sachet of parsnips, sweet potatoes and sliced lamb sausage. The game in the lamb highlights the caramelized sweet potatoes and is one of my favorite dishes. After we finish, it is time for the first main dish, fire roasted Kanaloa swordfish is served on a bed of delicata squash with a ver jus butter sauce. Beef shin braised in bourbon with cornbread creme beans follows. Each dish is so exquisite that I can’t decipher whether the one I’m eating tastes better or the one that came before!

Toasty autumn desserts are ushered to the table; first, delicious cinnamon roasted Cuyama apples and oats, and then a plate of cheddar cheese filled dates and fresh honeycomb. Afterwards we are warmed by coffee and embers while enjoying the song of crickets. As we sip our coffee, I think about all the guests that traveled here tonight, from high and low, far and wide, to find our seats here at this very table. Us, complete strangers came together and enjoyed a feast filled with so much laughter and warmth, and for that I am thankful for the home-felt presence Moonrise Standard dinners provide. The campfire crackles behind me and I watch the stars. Together, they hold the moon perfectly in place. I smile, knowing it will guide me home tonight.

lowing globes rest in the surrounding olive trees, as if pieces of the moon itself climbed down from the sky and made their home in the branches. A peaceful breeze blows, causing the flickering candle flames to sway to its rhythm. The welcoming ambiance of Smithy Kitchen + Bar is instantly relieving after a busy day. The hostess seats me on the back patio and I take in the scenery as soft music plays amongst the chatter of other guests. Large elegant mirrors hang on the patio’s walls in front of chic white sofas; glossed dining tables are lined along planters holding ancient trees, and cozy fireplaces warm the courtyard, creating a perfect mix of inside and outside décor. I skim the menu, my mouth already watering at its creativity, and soon the server arrives. I order the roasted rainbow carrots with spiced cashew butter, coconut yogurt and a creamy pesto. The cashew butter makes the dish decadently moist and the savory mixture of spices, pesto, and coconut dance in my mouth. I bask in every bite until the plate is clean. The server brings my next dish—roasted sunchokes and chanterelles, sprinkled with brown butter hazelnuts, over butternut squash purée. The salty sunchokes pair amazingly with the sweet butternut squash and crunchy hazelnuts. Each forkful is wholesome and warm. Chef Lauren Herman has done it again.

For my main, I get the grilled lamb meatballs over chickpea purée, tzatziki, pita, and cucumber salad. The zesty meat complimented by the fresh cucumbers and hummus, recreate the classic flavors of a Greek gyro mixed with tasty falafel. It’s a Mediterranean favorite with Smithy’s flare. After a bit of time has passed, my table is graced by mint chocolate chip ice cream cake and caramelized crepes from Pastry Chef Christina Olufson. The chocolate crust of the cake crumbles as I dip my spoon into it, and after just one bite, it becomes evident that the ice cream is made with fresh mint. It’s light, delicious, and not too sweet. On the other hand the caramelized crepes toped with grilled pears and fresh pomegranates are warm, buttery, and sugary. Their sweetness is the perfect end to an amazing dinner. I relax underneath the light of the lanterns a little while longer before resuming the night. I exit through the restaurant, which is decked with hanging plants and stacks of old books on the edges of the bar and communal table. I read the quote on the wall as I approach the door, “So long as you have food in your mouth you have solved all questions for the time being,” and it rings true because the only question on my mind is how soon I can return.

More Than Just a

CAFFEINE BUZZ

Photographed by Silas Fallstich Written by Hana-Lee Sedgwick

It’s a perfectly sunny winter afternoon when I walk into the new Handlebar Coffee Roasters location on De La Vina to meet a friend for coffee. I get there early and, noticing there’s no line (a rare occasion), I head to the long black and white tiled counter to order. I ask for a vanilla latte, eyeing the selection of almond croissants and picture perfect avocado toast. This is not my first visit to Handlebar’s second location. In fact, it’s not even my fourth or fifth. Since this new midtown location opened a few months ago, I’ve been regularly paying a visit for a caffeine fix and bite. Sure, Handlebar is within walking distance from my house and the coffee is stellar, however, it’s also the modern, laidback vibe at this location that keeps me coming back for more. The renovated 4,000 square foot space is cool without trying too hard. Exposed brick walls and industrial details fill the open concept, which is bright and airy thanks to the natural light pouring in through the large windows. Past the wooden communal table near the kitchen, the large coffee roaster serves as an impressive focal point. My friend arrives and joins me outside under a bright yellow umbrella, marveling at the number of people there on a Wednesday afternoon. I look around and see a group of 20-somethings catching up on life, a few people dressed in business casual clothes discussing work strategies, and an elderly man getting lost in a book while he sips his tea. I even notice a few individuals getting happy hour started early as they busily type away on their

@ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 31

laptops in between sips of beer. As I sit there with my perfectly hot, slightly sweet frothy latte I can’t help but smile...this is not just a neighborhood coffee shop, it’s a real community gathering place. That’s exactly what owners Aaron Olson and Kim Anderson had hoped for when they opened the original downtown Handlebar in 2011. As former professional cyclists who lived in Europe eight months out of the year, they became enamored by the European café culture. There, they grew to appreciate that meeting up for coffee was an experience to savor—something to be enjoyed over an hour or two with friends instead of on the go. After Aaron and Kim moved to Santa Barbara, they decided to pursue their newfound passion for roasting coffee and a couple of years later, opened Handlebar Coffee Roasters. As we wrap up our coffee date, we make plans to come back the following week, though we decide next time we’re going to take advantage of the beer and wine available. Or maybe we’ll try an affogato for a sweet afternoon pick-me-up. Before we leave, we see Aaron nearby, stopping by one table to say hello to a few people before clearing dishes from another. He comes our way, thanking us with a smile as we stand up. No doubt he’s been here since the early morning and, as it’s nearing 4:00 p.m., he must be exhausted, but you’d never know it. It’s easy to see what makes Handlebar such a popular spot. It’s not just about great coffee— though that helps—it’s about creating a welcoming place to meet up with friends, enjoy coffee or a light lunch, slow down, and feel like part of a community.

A TASTE OF TOKYO

Photographed by Silas Fallstich Written by Hana-Lee Sedgwvick It’s always fun to discover a hidden gem within Santa Barbara’s culinary scene, especially a restaurant that’s said to be unlike any other in town. So, as my husband and I step inside Yoichi’s, I can’t help but feel excited for something a little different on this uncharacteristically mellow Friday night. We’re welcomed by a few friendly staff members before taking our seat at a booth near the entrance. Yoichi’s is a small restaurant—tiny even—with only ten tables. However, from what I’ve heard about this two year old restaurant, what it lacks in space it makes up for in flavor. We open our menu and glance at the extensive seven course selection before admiring the wide offering of sake and Japanese wines. Yoichi’s is a traditional Japanese multi-course dining experience, known as kaiseki, consisting of beautifully presented dishes, so it just wouldn’t be complete without traditional drinks to go with it. A friendly server comes to our table asking if we’d like some Japanese tea, which she pours into small ceramic cups. I tell her how much I love the mugs, and she shares that they’re handmade by a local Japanese ceramist especially for the restaurant. As we take our first sip of the hot tea, we’re greeted by Mogi, wife and partner of chef and owner, Yoichi Kawabata. She welcomes us with a big smile and begins walking us through the menu, mentioning that the seafood primarily comes from Tokyo, traveling less than 24 hours to ensure they serve only the freshest fish. She also points out a few seasonal items, then recommends a special bottle of sake, we nod and appreciate the guidance. After our sake arrives, we settle in and prepare for a culinary treat. The meal starts with an array of zensai (assorted appetizers) and upon the arrival of this first course, I question why I haven’t been here sooner. Our plates are each filled with four small bites, and I get a hit of acid from the vegetables in rice vinegar, then a hint of brightness from the Japanese parsley atop the miso-marinated scallop presented on a half shell. Already my taste buds are taken to new levels. Nick and I look at each other and smile as we take a few sips of the smooth sake. This is going to be good. @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 35

Our next course of owan, or soup, is brought out as the sake starts to sink in and the classical piano music relaxes us into the booth. The soup is picturesque, with fresh water eel cake, mushrooms, and a pickled cherry blossom on top adding a pop of pink. We pick up the bowls and sip, feeling the delicate richness of the flavorful broth warm our mouths and our souls. Each perfectly timed new course brings another impressively plated dish adorned with meticulously arranged herbs and edible flowers. Our sashimi course looks like a rainbow of colors atop a layer of shredded daikon radish, with bluefin tuna and salmon so fresh that it almost melts in my mouth. My husband comments on how amazing the sashimi is and I nod in agreement mid-bite, not wanting to take away from the delicious mix of fresh fish, soy sauce, and wasabi that hits my tongue with an umami punch. After savoring grilled king crab that’s cooked to perfection, followed by delicate Japanese rock fish simmered in a sweet, soy-based broth, I mention that I can’t believe we’re having such a traditional Japanese

meal in Santa Barbara—it seems like we should be in San Francisco or Los Angeles for an experience like this. Having a kaiseke restaurant just a few minutes from our house is a treat. We finish our meal with a sushi course then dessert, which includes black sesame seed ice cream—a slightly sweet palate cleanser to wrap things up after our satisfying but not too filling meal. While each dish was chock full of rich, yet balanced and clean flavors—some familiar and some suited to more adventurous palates—as a whole the meal was delicious. While there are plenty of great restaurants in Santa Barbara, Yoichi’s certainly offers a unique dining experience. Other than actually enjoying this meal in Japan, I can’t think of a better way to spend a Friday night.

A Small But Strong Community A

fter the massive Thomas Fire burned through nearly 282,000 acres of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, the areas were shown no mercy when a series of devastating mudslides followed quickly behind. In such a sensitive time for the Santa Barbara community, it is easy to get distracted by the pain and grief that is surrounding us, however, now more than ever it is important to try and find the light at the end of the tunnel. Aside from the brave first responders who fought their best to combat the recent tragedies, there have also been an impressive number of residents who have proven to be local heroes exhibiting kindness in the aftermath of the fires and mudslides. As a community, we have faced extreme adversity in the past months, however we are lucky to be surrounded by such brave and selfless people who are doing what they can to get us closer to returning to the beautiful Santa Barbara that we all know and love.

n light of the recent devastation in the Santa Barbara areas, twenty-three-year-old resident Kyle Hamilton Du Val has been volunteering to help people haul away equipment and leftover mudslide debris with his truck. Kyle explains that since he lived through the 2005 flood in Ojai, he knows “how it feels to need help” which is part of the reason he felt so inspired to lend a helping hand to those around him. He has contributed much of his time doing anything that people need, from hauling dirt away, to digging out their homes or vehicles, to transporting equipment to and from Montecito. – Kyle Hamilton Du Val

ikki Vyn and her mother Kimberly Vyn started a small boutique of donated clothing and supplies which people who were displaced by the mudslides could grab for free. She initially set up a room in Hotel Californian, where many victims were staying, so that they could conveniently stop in and take what they needed. She reached out to people via social media asking for donations and was overwhelmed by the positive responses she received. Nikki was able to successfully collect clothes, shoes, bags, toiletries, children’s toys, and other supplies which proved to be a huge relief for those who had lost many of their personal belongings in the mudslides. “The Ensemble Pop Up Shop” provided dozens of evacuees with basic necessities. – Nikki Vyn

ocal man Ken Jones, a plumbing contractor for Ken Jones Plumbing in Montecito, recently exhibited his heroism while working at the Casa Dorinda Retirement Community. Shortly after the mudslides struck, Ken went to the retirement community to see what he could do to help and was blown away by the extreme damage, it was like nothing he had ever seen. He was able to dig up a skid tractor that had been buried in the mud, and he quickly got to work digging out the road through the property and the residents’ cars so they would be able to evacuate. While working, Ken and a few other helpers noticed one resident who had wandered out into the mud during the chaos and got himself stuck, so Ken waded over and lifted him up in order to free the man and bring him to safety. Later during the day, he came across a yearbook while surveying the property, and was able to successfully clean it up and locate the rightful owners. From then on Ken has worked tirelessly at Casa Dorinda, collecting all salvageable items and returning them to their owners while cleaning up the property. – Danika Jones

ommunity treasure Abe Powell has proved to be a saving grace during this sensitive time in Montecito. After the appalling disasters, he immediately started offering his help via multiple Facebook pages that were formed to aid Montecito residents affected by the fire and debris flow. Abe rounded up people to shovel mud and coordinated the use of machinery. Day after day it was clear that Abe had become a community leader, simply by being willing to see a need and take the initiative to address that need. – Alexandra Williams

wenty-nine-year-old Woody Locke has lived in beautiful Santa Barbara for the majority of his life and when he witnessed the destruction of the recent disasters, he knew he couldn’t just sit in the background and do nothing. Although he wasn’t personally greatly affected, he was devastated by the images of his close friends’ homes that had been swept away and by the heartbreaking stories that they were sharing. Woody felt a strong empathy for the people in crisis because he was evacuated from his house during the Painted Cave Fire many years ago, causing everything surrounding the fires to really resonate with him. Therefore, Woody decided to organize a benefit concert featuring five local bands (one of which he is the lead singer of) with 100% of the profits going straight to Direct Relief. – Woody Locke

t 4 a.m. on the morning of the deadly mudslide, a very scared Paul Nguyen and his roommate Don jumped out of their Olive Mill Road house when a black mud flow that “looked like lava” started to creep underneath their front door. Paul had just enough time to get dressed and grab his wallet and phone before jumping into four feet of thick mud and debris in hopes of getting to safety. By some miracle, a young man by the name of Chris came across the evacuees and quickly ran over to see if everyone was okay and if they needed a place to stay. Paul and Don were so thankful and cried of blessing in this crucial moment. Chris was able to take the men to his house nearby and give them food and drinks to replenish their tired and scared bodies. The next morning, Chris’ wife Andrea made breakfast for the men while Chris went out again to see if he could rescue any other displaced residents. Paul and Don became fast friends with the generous couple and will forever be thankful for their selflessness and kindness. – Paul Nguyen

SB LIFE & STYLE wellness

Let’s Talk Health It’s always interesting seeing someone in person that you’ve only seen in pictures or on television. We see their best angles, their good hair days, and their ideal facade. This often leads me to question if what I see is reality. While some of the time we, as a social media savvy society, are mislead by smoke and mirrors, meeting wellness expert Nikki Sharp proves she’s the real deal.

and exercising outdoors. So while there are incredible advances to enhance our lives, we are also becoming more stressed out chasing after health. On the plus side though, apps on-demand for health care are becoming more efficient and reducing our costs, which puts health into our own hands and makes people more aware and in charge! It’s no longer about sick care, it’s becoming preventative care.

It’s a sunny Friday morning in Montecito when I meet Nikki at our photoshoot. Between making chia seed pudding from her upcoming book and jumping around in activewear throughout the day, I catch moments that allow me to get to know her even better than her verified Instagram account can. As she talks about her love for traveling and yoga, and how much she despises tomatoes, I am in awe of her active lifestyle, sense of humour, and charisma. After the shoot we chat about wellness, social media, and how to get her flawless glowing skin.

How do you feel about social medias influence on healthy living

What are some wellness trends we can expect to see in 2018 Social media detoxes will become even more popular as we understand the negative impact it can have on our lives. Meditation will become mainstream and is starting to become, shall I say, ‘chic and sexy.’ CBD is having its moment and will grow to a huge industry in 2018. Turmeric had its year in 2017 but will only grow bigger.

What powders, supplements, vitamins, or spices do you recommend Maca powder, Moringa, and medicinal mushroom powders like Reishi.

What is your take on the most popular wellness trends right now

Big trends are members only type clubs that are based on wellness. I believe they are all good and the more we learn, the more we can implement them into our lives. The only negative here is that things are NOT cheap and we think we need them all. We are losing the core focus on sleep, good quality food that is home cooked, 48 | MARCH/APRIL 2018

On one hand, it’s making people more aware of benefits of different foods, exercising and that we can in fact have incredible transformations and inspire others to become healthier. I mean, avocado and Brussels sprouts were not that popular a few years ago! Now they are all over Insta. The downside is that we have created keeping up with the Joneses 24/7 and striving to always be perfect is causing people depression, isolation and anxiety.

What is your top advice for living a healthy lifestyle

Go back to the basics! Put your phone away, turn off the TV and get some good quality sleep. Rise and shine to some exercise; find what you love and do that. And eat nourishing food that comes from the earth, homemade as often as possible.

What are your skincare secrets

Sleep, water, and coconut oil. Again, keep it simple! And less stress.

What is the key to maintaining healthy eating habits To focus on how it makes you FEEL (rather than look) and making small changes that stick, rather than grand resolutions that end up feeling like a drag to do.

What do you do for exercise

I love being outdoors for running, hiking and cycling because it truly is the best form of therapy and you get fresh air which is the #1 nutrient we are not getting enough of. I equally love hitting the gym and lifting weights, doing sprints on the treadmill or going to a yoga class.

Is there a health misconception that bothers you

That people spend so much money on all the trendy health products and services. Yes, cryo is good for your body, but at typically $60 a session, it’s better to take that and put it towards organic food. It’s important to see where you are in your own life, focus on sleep, food, water, and breathing (or meditation), and then add in extra things, one by one.

When did you start your wellness journey

I was modeling and not healthy. There was not as big of an emphasis on nutrition and our health internally as there is now, so I took it into my own hands to learn and fell in love. Changing the way I ate got rid of my acne and body dysmorphia, and made me love my body. I stopped exercising out of punishment, rather it became something I loved to do!

What are your favorite wellness related products on the market I’m loving Carbon 38’s clothing, Believe Activewear (a Spanish company with the softest fabrics), Goldyn Glow, a turmeric powder that I mix into my coffee, and Just Add Water, my friend’s protein powder that is coming to market soon (it’s made with such pure ingredients that it doesn’t upset my stomach like other powders).

What are your favorite ingredients to work with

Black beans and chickpeas because they can be used in baking for incredibly healthy substitutes.

You have a new book focused on meal prepping coming out in May Tell me about what to expect.

I spent 2 years writing my new book, perfecting the recipes, and answering everyone’s questions on emotional eating, where you should spend your money, what the deal is with organic, and creating an amazing 4-week meal plan that will give incredible results. Health should be easy and fun and I am just so happy that I get to share tips with people!

Delicious + Easy Collard Wraps

Miso-Glazed Tempeh

Creamy Beetroot Dip

Makes two servings for the week

Ingredients

Ingredients

Ingredients

Olive oil, for coating the baking dish 1/4 cup red miso paste 1 tablespoon agave syrup 2 tablespoons lite (reduced sodium) soy sauce 1 tablespoon peeled and grated fresh ginger 4 slices of tempeh, 1/2 inch thick

1 large beet 3 tablespoons Greek yogurt (or sub soy yogurt) ½ teaspoon ground turmeric ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper Juice of ½ lemon Sea salt and pepper, to taste A few mint leaves, chopped (to garnish)

2 large collard leaves 4 tablespoons creamy beetroot dip 2 large carrots, shredded 4 slices miso-glazed tempeh, sliced 2 small tomatoes, sliced Small handful alfalfa sprouts 6 sprigs cilantro, optional ½ avocado, sliced Directions 1. Place the collard leaves flat on a cutting board and cut vertically on both sides of the stem to remove it, leaving you with two smaller leaves. This will make it easier to handle. Place one leaf about ½ of the way over the other to create a larger leaf again, where you will then place the ingredients in the center of the wrap. 2. Divide your ingredients between two wraps, spreading the beetroot dip equally. Layer each ingredient on top of the other, topping with optional cilantro or any other green of choice. 3. Wrap the leaves as you would a burrito, grabbing one side with your hand and while folding ingredients over, making sure nothing spills out. Cut in half. Use a toothpick to hold each side together if desired.

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. 2. Coat a glass baking dish with olive oil. 3. In a small bowl, whisk together the miso, agave, soy sauce, and ginger until well combined. 4. Reserve about a third of the mixture in a small bowl. Set aside. 5. Place the tempeh slices in the dish. 6. Brush the tempeh with all of the miso mixture, aside from the reserve. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least a half hour.

Directions 1. To prepare the beetroot: peel your beet, chop it, and add the pieces to a pot of boiling water. Cook until a fork goes through them easily, and they are very soft. Drain and allow to cool. Alternatively, roast your beet and allow to cool before blending. 2. Place the beetroot and other ingredients, except the mint, in a food processor and process until the mixture is the consistency of a smooth paste. 3. Place the mixture in a container. Seal well and refrigerate.

7. Remove and discard the plastic wrap. Bake the tempeh for 20 minutes, flipping after 10 minutes. Note: you will have leftover glaze. Use on another serving of tempeh or as a dressing for salads or marinade.

n a word: glamour…I knew right away that I wanted to shoot a series here,” photographer Gray Malin said in a recent interview. There’s nothing quite like a day spent poolside under the California sun, especially if it’s at the Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club. Gray plays up its unique vintage charm in his most recent photo collection which features the Aqualillies at the iconic Santa Barbara landmark in celebration of Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara’s 90th anniversary. Gray Malin is a world traveling fine art photographer known for his beach photographs and aesthetic aerial shots. He says, “When I first stepped foot on the property, I was struck by its sophisticated glamour, but was further intrigued by its rich history and luxurious vibration. Within moments, I was immediately transported to a different time—a really glamorous moment in American history.” Built in 1937, the exclusive members-only social club has been the backdrop of countless society events attended by Hollywood elite and extravagant overwater fashion shows. Club Manager Kevin Speer explains that the name “Coral Casino” was inspired in part by its unique oceanfront setting; while “casino” was a term widely used in the era that defined the establishment’s social club status. Known as one of the “jewels of Santa Barbara’s social scene,” the oceanfront oasis features a wide range of amenities from an Olympic sized swimming pool and a sauna to fine dining and private beach access. Gray notes, “The expansive pool, along with the rest of the property’s architectural uniquities, was my primary inspiration for the entire series.” The release of Gray’s collection was announced on Instagram on January 31st, 2018 (@graymalin). In response to the Thomas Fire and recent mudslides, a potion of the sales from the series will be donated to the restoration of the Montecito community.

SURF’S

78 | MARCH/APRIL 2018

UP I

t’s 5 o’clock on a South Bay Friday and the craving for an afternoon of wine tasting—followed by that little apple-bacon pork chop with mustard-ginger crumble at Finch & Fork—is real. Like, make a reservation and get on a plane real. I miss my sunny, strong city sparkling in Chardonnay. Moments like this, I just want one private plane on speed dial. The airline is Surf Air and I jump to their schedule hoping to see a departure time that works. 100 flights are cruising the coast daily, destined for 12 of our favorite California neighborhoods. The next take off is one hour out and I book it on mobile. A flat monthly rate offers unlimited flights and the efficiency of the Surf Air clubhouse experience cannot be overstated—arrival time is a mere 15 minutes before departure, car keys are with valet, concierge grabs a quick photo (so we can skip the ID check next time around), and I drop into a lounge chair with a fresh doppio espresso. It’s the swiftest park-to-plane experience imaginable and the private San Carlos airport is a massive upgrade to the usual SFO madhouse. After chatting Tahoe ski conditions with a few fellow Santa Barbara expats, we’re whisked outside to board a southbound plane. I’m just settling into the comforts of a good book when I feel the gentle bank of the wings and turn to see Santa Barbara lights through the cockpit windshield. It’s only minutes before we are walking through the warm night into the clubhouse neighboring SBA. If we weren’t so eager for that complimentary glass of check-in wine, I wouldn’t mind lounging here for awhile in a cool selection of spaces that have me instantly pinning inspired furniture pieces to my Living Room board.

I’ve clinked glasses on the Canary rooftop bar. Enjoyed a SBIFF afterparty around the pool. Been moved by the outpouring of pure love and support at the recent benefit for our friends in Montecito. But staying at the Canary? This is new. Within 30 seconds of stepping into the lobby, we cheers our pick of local red and white and order a quick nightcap of marinated olives and smoked chipotle hummus up to the room; Santa Barbara should consider switching their tap to moscato. It’s good to be back. And it’s good to be sinking into this California King.

@ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 79

Waking up, I can’t tell if I’m more excited to be back in Santa Barbara or back to drifting asleep in this nebula of sheets. If the four-post canopy bed wasn’t enough to gain our lifelong loyalty, waking up and opening French doors to a view of the mountains certainly did it. Did you know: walk-in closets, downtown balconies, Spanish tile soaker tubs—all twice as nice through French doors. Freshly delivered Homemade Chai and Lemon Ricotta Pancakes disappear to the soundtrack of JT and only the promise of a rooftop yoga class and beachside bike ride can convince me to leave this room.

The Canary Hotel is the only rooftop bar in Santa Barbara (a true crime against the community; please write to your local zoning officials or something) and reason alone to book a weekend at this Kimpton classic. Step out to a sunny scattering of lounge areas, kumquat trees, string lights, and a pool hot tub combo (complete with a mini-fridge of chilled towels and cucumber-infused water bar) surrounded by red roof views and a horizon of hazy morning mountains. Soak it in. The best thing about a staycation? No guilt spending all of Saturday at the hotel. Sunday Funday is not complete without tapas from Loquita and an absinthe foam-topped round at Test Pilot, both within balmy walking distance from our State Street staple. Don’t miss the 4-6 p.m. daily wine hour or full menu selection at the Canary’s (flightinducing) Finch & Fork. Back on the roof, cozied up to a towering, candleladen fireplace, a surprise basket of blankets sustains our long afternoon of wine tasting into a late night of fireside conversation with old friends. So this is bliss. The promise of an effortless return trip makes leaving just bearable. Next door to SBA, the Santa Barbara Surf Air Clubhouse is the first fully-branded location in the portfolio and worth a visit if you’re looking to upgrade your frequent flier experience. Inside: espresso machines steam in the kitchen. Big beautiful books lean on coffee tables. A silver cart is stacked with tiny suitcases. Outside: the glimmering fleet of gorgeous, front-propeller Pilatus PC12 aircraft offer 8-seats, room for one extra pup named Bo, and 1-hour flights between the Bay and the Barb. The kindest team of people will elevate the experience every step of the way. Gazing starry-eyed between a gold encrusted Pacific and waves of constellations, the name Surf Air officially clicks. It’s a smooth, radical ride along the coast. Surf ’s up.

MALIBU

DREAMING Written by Alexandra Sharova

82 | MARCH/APRIL 2018

I

’m convinced that the winding PCH down to Malibu is the best drive in the Golden State. I prefer it with the windows slightly down, to welcome a whistling ocean breeze, that mixes like brown sugar in a cappuccino–seamlessly–with classic rock melodies as they escape the car; all while taking in the waves (that easily rival packaged glitter for shine) on the right and the sunlit mountains on the left. It’s a Cali dream, if there ever was one. It’s all so alluring I decide to head down south on a Friday afternoon for a one-day getaway—because sometimes you need to cave to impulse. I arrive just shy of sunset at The Surfrider. The self-proclaimed “California beach house” is perched across from the pier, providing the best Malibu has to offer; good views, good food (drinks too), and good vibes, in true surf-culture form. With its natural wood floors and rawcut accent furniture, peaceful beige palette, and modern-meets-coastalchic aesthetic, it’s the kind of place that will make the most proper guests throw up a shaka sign. I skip unpacking and opt to watch the sun set from my suite’s private balcony. Between the wicker chair and a tassel-adorned hammock, I choose the latter—swinging into bliss as the view transforms from a pastel gradient to a fire in the sky. If this is “beach living,” I’m ready to trade in my stilettos and the ride the wave. @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 83

Around dusk, and post-traffic, my best friend joins me in the “Library” (the perfect spot to catch up on work or enjoy one of the many coffee table books) of the boutique hotel. We head out to dinner, leaving contemporary luxury behind for something more timeless and classic: Mastro’s. The restaurant is absolutely packed. Waiters in crisp white jackets deliver culinary masterpieces to tables that are buzzing with laughter, toasts, and utter delight. We place our extravagant order and proceed to catch up on everything. Before I have the chance to finish my first bit of news our handsome waiter arrives with two lemon drop filled shakers (the drinks are poured at the table, and presentation is key). With a sugar rim that’s more reminiscent of yellow diamonds than candy, and a dry ice-induced smoke show, the cocktail is more dramatic (in the best way) than a season of The Bachelor. As we indulge in one too many pieces of heavenly bread and a few obligatory cheers, our apps make their way onto the table. Buttery tuna sashimi is ignited with a soy chili tostada sauce and topped with delicate, yet biting jalapeño slices—it’s sushi expert-approved. For the dozen oysters we went with a split, half from each coast, and in true California girl form I preferred the West, go figure. The five-star service and equally rated dining is juxtaposed by crashing waves, modestly lit up by the restaurant. I tear myself away from the window, just in time to see the good stuff: our 16-ounce filet mignon, split in two. From the sides of fluffy potatoes sprinkled with generous lobster pieces and the truffle-packed cheesy gnocchi, to the melt-in-your-mouth

steak, it is decadence at its finest. Turns out, oysters really are an aphrodisiac…because I engage in a full-on affair with my 400-degree plate. Just when I think the end is near, as in I may not survive my gluttonous evening, we get a candle-topped butter cake. I take a bite, convinced it was created by a magical force. Nothing can be that delectable. The cake comes back with us, in a sleek black box (a classy touch). We return to the suite for some rosé and gossip on the balcony, and take in the shimmering sky and brisk salty air. I awake before my alarm to a playful glow. The piercing golden rays cut right through the linen drapes, illuminating the spacious suite. I proceed to the rooftop deck that looks far more like a hip Venice hangout than a hotel dining area. Note: the deck is only open to guests, keeping it intimate and exclusive, after all it is LA. I sip on my decorated cappuccino as the sugar melts away the server’s design, while reading a book in a cozy, pillow-adorned couch. Several chapters later I notice the quickly growing line outside the Malibu Farm Restaurant, just across the road, and realize brunch time is approaching. The trendy spot boasts two locations, the restaurant at the beginning of the pier and the café, casually placed at the end. I take a coveted

table outside along the glass wall; it keeps me safe from the building wind, yet gives me front-row seating to the ocean’s synchronized dance. I begin my meal with a shot…not that kind! This one’s “for your health,” and it’s got a kick thanks to a clever concoction of ginger, lemon and turmeric. Inspired by my healthy choice I continue on the path with a cauliflower crust “pizza.” Crisped edges, a crunchy raw cauliflower topping, homemade pesto, and cooked tomato slices mimic the real deal, while a frittata-like center makes the dish ideal for brunch. After two good choices I am ready for a “bad” one. I treat myself to the f ’rose, a sweet, yet refreshing take on my favorite wine—it’s the adult slushy we’ve all been waiting for. As I bask in the warmth of the beating sun, my entree arrives and I realize there’s something truly calming about listening to crashing waves playing a private show while enjoying mouth-watering skirt steak tacos. Yes, that right there is my happy place—on a pier in Malibu, eating farmto-table food at a locally owned hot spot. I leave Malibu with a happy heart, a full (maybe too full) belly, and a deep desire to return. From views that left me smiling in awe, to unforgettable meals that I will no doubt crave for weeks to come, my stay left me relaxed, inspired and in a state of pure joy. Who knew such goodness was just a short, scenic route away?

A COASTAL SANCTUARY Written by Alexandra Sharova

@ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 87

ot all beach towns are created equally…yet there is one location that is time and time again compared to our beloved Santa Barbara. Laguna Beach is often called our southern cousin, boasting a similar picturesque topography, but with its own unique character. I venture to The Ranch at Laguna Beach, a new private resort strategically nestled between land and sea, to find out if the rumors are in fact true. My date and myself arrive late Friday evening to The Ranch at Laguna Beach, and quickly realize that this is less “ranch,” and a lot more “luxury meets the great outdoors.” Positioned within a canyon, the resort provides a hideaway from the outside world—literally and figuratively—thanks to an emphasis on connecting with nature, while disconnecting from technology (note: service is close to non-existent here, so prepare to embrace a cell phone-free stay) and enjoying high-end accommodations. In an effort to soak in as much of our surroundings as possible we take to the 24-hour hot tub. A bottle of refreshing rosé with strawberry notes combined with the steaming

water is the de-stressing formula I needed after a hectic few weeks. Not to mention, the lack of city lights exposes stars I haven’t seen in years. The onyx sky overflows with glistening shimmers, far more captivating than string lights that so commonly decorate my evenings. It doesn’t get much more romantic than that. We make our way down to Harvest, the resort’s roomy restaurant that boasts glorious mountain views and a front row seat to the evergreen golf course. The rustic beach design mixes historic memorabilia from the country club that previously occupied the 87-acre location in the ’50s with industrial accents, for a cozy-meets-cool feel. Given the heavenly weather—sunshine sans glaring heat—I choose a window booth to enjoy my breakfast, consisting of a fluffy cappuccino, avocado toast and a pastry basket, I’m on vacation, after all. My “basic” dish, which is absolutely delicious thanks to an added poached egg and generously heaped crab atop creamy avo, is met with a notso-basic sight; a baby owl and a red tail hawk just outside the window. Although traditional “ranch” animals are not present on the grounds, the resort partners with a local wildlife preservation organization to bring these breathtaking creatures by on Saturdays as part of their education initiative. Note: deer are known to graze the golf course, providing quite the photo-op for visitors. I must admit, it’s the most interesting thing I’ve witnessed while enjoying a morning coffee. In order to fully evaluate how LB compares to SB, we leave the property, taking the scenic coastal road into town with the top down, letting the wind caress my hair. We begin with a hike at Crystal Cove

State Park that overlooks the ocean, and end our mission with local gelato on the beach, watching iridescent clouds at sunset. On the way back to the car we explore the various shops and galleries that line PCH, including one that’s filled with Dr. Seuss’ paintings, sketches and sculptures—it’s a must see. We wrap up the day with cuddled up cocktails by the outdoor fire pit, enjoying live music (a nightly treat at The Ranch) and the crisp evening air. My Sunday morning begins with a visit to the spa—shouldn’t all Sundays start this way? From an extensive menu that features an array of massage therapies, facials and body treatments, I settle on a deep-tissue massage, although I wish I could try each one…TJ, my therapist, walks me to a toasty private room that smells of delicious oils, the perfect de-stressing combo. With deep strokes and minty fresh lotion she works out every knot and kink, from head to toe. After an hour, I feel completely renewed. I leave in a state of absolute nirvana, that lasts the whole drive up north. The Ranch at Laguna Beach is exactly what you’d expect from the name; it’s coastal living embracing nature with an emphasis on sustainability and of course, a little luxury. It may hold similarities to SB, but it’s best to find out what’s unique about our cousin town all on your own. It’s the perfect excuse to unplug and unwind where land and ocean converge.

Taking it Slow

in

San Luis Obispo

Sometimes the good life is not as far away as you may think. Written by Meg Fontaine It is a gorgeous, crisp Southern California day as I wind up the 101 en route to Pismo Beach from Santa Barbara. With a shimmering ocean to my left and a breezy soundtrack, I settle in and vow to take it slow on my exploration of San Luis Obispo County.

Pismo Beach

As I pull into the sun-drenched Dolphin Bay Resort in Pismo Beach, it is clear that tranquility is in my future. I am led to my spacious seaside-style suite and step onto the balcony, taking in the stunning coastline, dotted with swaying palm trees and lush vegetation. Come evening, I meander along the ocean-hugging path, watching the setting sun’s shades of orange and yellow meet the water’s hues of blue. Next door at The Cliffs Resort awaits the award-winning Marisol Restaurant, and upon arrival my friends and I are escorted to the ocean terrace. I think to myself that our table and the sinking sun were surely made for each other. Marisol’s Chef de Cuisine, Victor Flores, ensures that our dining experience is impeccable from start to finish. Beginning with a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, we dive into a delectable meal as the sun slips into the sea. Tri-tip-wrapped asparagus, decadent seaside mac and cheese, and crispy wonton tuna tacos are just the beginning. My entree of perfectly roasted sea bass gives way to a creamy honey 90 | MARCH/APRIL 2018

cheesecake. After dinner, I stroll back to Dolphin Bay in a dream-like state and sleep more soundly than I have in weeks.

San Luis Obispo

The Granada Hotel is refined yet full of character, tucked into a historical building in bustling downtown San Luis Obispo. Its blend of exposed brick, plush jewel-toned velvet, white marble, hardwood floors, and sumptuous Persian rugs exudes charm and luxury in a way that makes me wish for an era bygone—this hotel was a retreat for artists in the roaring 20’s, after all. As if I need further convincing, I

immediately know this is the place for me when I am kindly offered a glass of rosé upon check-in (my answer to this question is always yes). A favorite theme of mine materializes as we head to Stephen Ross Wine Cellars for a tasting. Post barrel tour, Stephen and his wife Paula seat us at a long wooden table cozied in the back corner of their colorful tasting room. We are offered a pairing of best-in-class French cheeses from Fromagerie Sophie, a specialty cheese shop in downtown San Luis Obispo, to accompany Stephen and Paula’s highly acclaimed wines. Fromagerie Sophie and Stephen Ross are a match made in epicurean heaven. The cheese and charcuterie plate before me is almost too beautiful to touch. After indulging in the smooth 2014 Stone Corral Vineyard Pinot Noir, the decadent Langres cheese (washed in Marc de Champagne during its ripening period), along with four other wines, nine other cheeses, and an array of accoutrements, I think I’m a little closer to knowing the meaning of happiness.

Cambria

I drop my bags off at the charming equestrian-inspired Oceanpoint Ranch in Cambria before embarking on a favorite adventure of mine: horseback riding. But at Cambria Pines by the Sea Ranch, the horses are unlike any others I’ve met before. My friends and I are warmly greeted by the Ranch’s owner, Ralph Covell, at the property gate. He escorts us through a thick forest of Monterey Pines until we reach a plateau, where stunning meadows and sweeping vistas of the Pacific await us. The idyllic scene becomes even more magical when we spot dozens of beautiful Clydesdales cantering against the backdrop. Ralph’s knowledgeable daughter, Tara, is our riding guide, and I am grateful for such a reassuring leader after climbing on top of my gentle yet larger-than-life horse, Pocket. We take to the trails to enjoy the majesty of these Clydesdales and the natural splendor of Cambria.

Paso Robles

Arriving at Allegretto Vineyard Resort in Paso Robles, I suddenly feel as though I’ve been transported to somewhere beneath the Tuscan sun. A mediterranean-inspired beauty, Allegretto is nestled amongst eight acres of vineyards and is studded with Picholine olive trees, lush gardens, bocce ball courts, and a glittering pool. After a heavenly dinner at Allegretto’s in-house eatery, Cello Ristorante & Bar, in which Allegretto’s very own 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon was a standout, we rest our palates for our distillery tour the next day. We pull up to the Re:Find Handcrafted Spirits tasting room refreshed and ready to imbibe at Alex and Monica Villicana’s gem of a distillery. The Villicana’s sustainability efforts are both commendable and delectable as they utilize the free-run juice from their namesake Villicana Vineyards to produce artisan spirits that are begging for a spot on your bar cart. I find that sipping these spirits is deliciously easy to do, and I am envisioning the impressive cocktails that will certainly become mainstays on my personal bar menu at home (hello Limoncello Brandy and Cucumber Flavored Vodka!)

Until next time...

As I pack my bags and reflect on my magnificent getaway, I know I’ll make the short drive up north again for more. After all, in San Luis Obispo County, time slows down for the good life...and we could all use a little more of that.

NAPA’S FINEST

92 | MARCH/APRIL 2018

Written by Alessa Valenzuela If there is one thing we have learned in Santa Barbara over the past few months it’s that mother nature, like life, is both wild and powerful. Amid moments of uncertainty and chaos, luckily there are places you can go where worldly stresses seemingly cease to exist. Once such destination is Napa Valley’s Auberge du Soleil. Arriving in California’s pristine wine country beneath the warm glow of a late Friday afternoon sky, my sister and I discover our temporary home away from home hidden in a sunlit olive grove on the slopes of Rutherford Hill. A friendly bellman welcomes us to the property and offers a glass of wine as we make our way to check-in. I opt for some bubbles, “Very good Ms. Valenzuela.” Moments later he returns with a tasting glass of sparkling white wine, the perfect start to a much-needed getaway. When it comes to the world of leisure and travel, let’s just say that Auberge du Soleil is playing in the big leagues. Having received four consecutive five-star reviews from Forbes Travel Guide and sustaining 12 years of their Michelin star rating, the Napa property has become known for its exceptional service, decadent dining and world-class spa treatments. The prized retreat offers unique and luxurious experiences to feed your soul, soothe your skin, and excite your senses. At check-in, noticing my dangerously low wine level our host kindly offers a refill, but truthfully, it’s been awhile since I’ve eaten and the bubbles have gone right to my head. As if I said as much out loud, she motions to a nearby bounty of tangerines and nuts, suggesting a snack. I like it here. SUITE LIFE As I step into my earth-toned one bedroom suite a waning sun drapes the room in golden light. Vacation has officially commenced. I’ve had visions of this moment, wrapping up in a thick terry robe, sipping wine fireside after a long soak in a massive tub. Looking around the room, I can see this is one such place. Only this version includes a terrace view overlooking a vine-studded valley, and quite possibly the most delightfully soft white linen clad bed. Resisting the allure of the spacious king size sleeper, I decide to take a walk to the spa for a little post-drive, pre-dinner relaxation. @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 93

SOAK IT UP Leaving the suite just before dusk, a calming pink and blue sky overhead serves as an enchanting canopy for an early evening stroll. As I walk along serene garden paths, I find giant jacks and romantic figures at home beneath ancient trees. The inn’s lush setting features a collection of 110 abstract and sculptural works created by California artists, waiting to be discovered throughout the property. Reveling in the beautiful simplicity of breathing fresh air, the humdrum thoughts that have been rattling around my mind all day slowly start to disperse. Entering the spa, a layered aroma of lavender and mint entices me as the warmth of the lobby pulls me forward. A cozy fireside lounge with teas and refreshments is another welcomed sight. I robe up, fix a cup of peppermint tea and head out towards the hillside patio, a sacred space for ultimate relaxation. Treatment rooms line the tranquil courtyard as I make my way towards the rejuvenation pools. Private gardens bring the outdoors into the treatment rooms, where you can indulge in facials and massages that feature ingredients indigenous to the vineyards, valleys, olive groves, and gardens of the region. Among the many experiences Auberge du Soleil offers are an organic Himalayan Salt Stone Massage, a Rhythmic Water Session and a world-class anti-aging facial. Yet dinner time is quickly approaching so a soak in the infinity pool while gazing down at the vineyards of Napa Valley will be just the thing to help me unwind. YES, CHEF Tonight we dine at The Restaurant where Executive Chef Robert Curry has created a menu that embodies all that is wine country cuisine, reflecting the natural diversity and rich ingredients of Napa Valley. Drawing from regional produce, his dishes are accented with Mediterranean flavors that will, well, rock your world. We are seated near the fireplace and presented with an iPad wine list boasting 15,000 bottles of domestic and international wines. Our server welcomes us, introducing the evening’s offerings. As I pour over each ingredient, dish by dish

I’m realizing this is not going to be an easy decision. After some serious deliberation (even more than usual) I select my courses, sit back, and enjoy a beet amuse bouche. First up is an Olive Oil Poached Black Bass. Rich, delicate white fish is served on top of forbidden rice, bok choy kimchi, and sautéed spinach. A red curry sauce adds bright notes of lemongrass and ginger, making the dish balanced and bold. The next delightful discovery is Chef ’s Gnocchi. Soft potato dumplings, wild mushrooms, Forni-Brown pea shoots, and parmesan nage, a frothy, creamy sauce which starts as a light foam is as delectable to the eyes as it is to taste. To finish the evening, a Chamomile Poached Bartlett Pear with salted caramel cream and toasted almond streusel from Executive Pastry Chef, Paul Lemieux.

seconds. Which basically means it goes fast, and the ride is powerful but smooth, oh so smooth.

When it comes to the restaurant world, receiving a Michelin star rating is pretty much the tops. A restaurant is evaluated on hundreds of different points of service in secrecy. Timing has to be perfect, presentation has to be perfect, flavors, temperature and service have to be perfect. Achieving perfection requires thoughtfulness, attention to detail, and dedication to mastery. Having tasted just three courses from Chef Robert, it’s clear that he and his team are well deserving of such an accolade.

BON VOYAGE

MERCEDES AND MOTHER NATURE Taking advantage of another clear and sunny afternoon, we decide to go for a hike because no California getaway is complete without a little adventure. A Mercedes-Benz test drive to Bothe-Napa Valley State Park to stretch our legs before we hit the road to home is just what we need. In partnership with Mercedes-Benz, Auberge offers an impressive collection of high performance vehicles available to “test drive” during your stay. Why not take the 2017 AMG S 63 convertible out for a spin? The handcrafted 5.5L AMG V8 biturbo has a horse power of 577 and can go from 0 to 60 in 3.8

The park is bustling with families and groups of mountain bikers making their way up and down creek crossing trails. A local rider kindly points us in the right direction at a fork in the road, and three miles later we reach the top. A few moments of silence enjoying the sight of rippling water pools and the sound of trickling brooks, then we begin to make our way back to the resort.

By the time we depart Auberge du Soleil, it’s easy to see why this property has been recognized by Forbes as a five star property and maintained its status as a Michelin Guide rated restaurant for well over a decade. Throughout our stay we had everything we needed and nothing we didn’t, a testament to proactive and intuitive service of the Auberge team. Arriving as smoky windblown wanderers, we leave relaxed, rejuvenated and ready for whatever might be ahead of us.

BREATHE IN BLISS

Written by Ottocina Ryan

“Tonight you will sleep like husbands! Not like babies because they keep waking up and not like wives because they’re awake too; however, husbands just snore through the night,” our shaman, Raul, jokes as we cool down between sessions during our Temazcal ritual. It is three hours into the Wanderwell wellness retreat at One&Only Palmilla resort in Cabo and one hour into the Temazcal ritual and I already feel refreshed. If you’re unfamiliar with the practice (as I was an hour prior), it’s a healing and purifying Mexican sweat lodge ritual. At the beginning I entered a volcanic rock igloo with the other Wanderwell participants, the radiant Wanderwell founders Cait and Vitina, and Raul. We set our intentions and Raul placed glowing lava rocks in the middle of the igloo, ceremoniously sprinkling each one with indigenous herbs. Then the door to the igloo was closed, making it pitch black. Raul dunked a bouquet of eucalyptus leaves into a bucket of water and brushed the smoldering lava rocks with them, steam billowed throughout the space and we focused on our breath and intentions as he chanted and played music. After 25 minutes or so Raul yelled “Puerta!” and light flooded the igloo. Steam slowly dissipated and we cooled off. This detoxifying sequence repeated four times for a two hour ritual. As the door is opened for the final time we are drenched in sweat and so relaxed and mentally renewed

that we are ready to sleep like husbands. I feel like I’ve sweat out everything from negative thoughts to the wine I drank last night. Raul goes around, pouring chilly water on each of us and brushing us with the leaves. Outside the igloo, I hydrate with cardamom, basil, mint, and chia infused water, ready to absorb the wellness teachings of the weekend. Over the course of the next three days we begin each morning with an elixir of lemon and apple cider vinegar, followed by meditation and yoga, both lead by Vitina in the resort’s yoga garden, surrounded by palm trees. The incredibly lush property would make you believe you were in a jungle, not a desert. At meals we are offered wellness menus that reflect Cait’s passion for healthy cooking without compromising taste. I could close my eyes and point to any item and be happy with my selection. Almost every dish is gluten and dairy free, most are vegan. With options ranging from lettuce wrapped fish tacos and vegan tapioca creme brûlée at oceanfront restaurant Agua by Larbi, to truffle topped tuna nigiri at the resort’s sushi and ceviche restaurant Suviche, to breakfast choices like healthy huevos rancheros and watermelon chia juice, we are well nourished.

In order to stay present, no phones are allowed outside our rooms during the retreat. At meals we talk to each other uninterrupted, prompted by questions from Vitina, like ‘where is your happy place?’ and ‘name one person you wish you could thank and for what.’ I learn as much about myself as I do the other participants. We conclude the first evening with candlelit meditation, then I’m lead back to my suite by the candles and incense that line the pathways. I climb into the daybed on my balcony with a view of bright stars and fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves. One of my favorite parts of the retreat is the mindfulness workshop. Post Saturday afternoon massages at the heavenly One&Only Spa, we gather in the resort’s library, over coconut water, ceviche and guacamole, where Vitina leads us through interactive exercises to cultivate mindfulness and kindness in all aspects of our lives. In one such exercise we select a person who has had a positive impact on our lives and list 10 things they have taught us. After we make the list Vitina encourages us to send it to the person we wrote about. I have a few epiphanies during the workshop and leave with my mind buzzing with things to write in my new gratitude journal. I have to say, gratitude comes naturally when you are surrounded by the kindest, most accepting retreat leaders and a resort staff that places a hand on

their heart and nods to every person they see. I’ve never felt more welcomed. Not to mention, my butler (every guest has one), Jehù, makes sure my stay is leisurely. The final morning I awake to an orange sky and meander down to the beach for sunrise meditation. We sit on the white sand and close our eyes. I feel completely present throughout the meditation and finally open my eyes to the sun peeking over the horizon and pelicans nose diving into the gentle waves for their breakfast. During the final brunch of the retreat, on the last page of our journals we list three things we are going to take home and three things we are going to leave behind. It’s amazing how just a few days can have that profound of an affect on your life, with the right coaching and atmosphere. As Jehù packs my suitcase (unfortunately he is not on my take-home list) I feel renewed, grateful, and excited to apply what I’ve learned to improve my life, relationships, sleep, and work, with a little more meditation and a little less screen time.
