Letter from the Editor

Choosing this month’s cover was like a rendition of cowboys and Indians, where the cowboy was a local trendsetter donning a So De Mel one shouldered bikini sipping on Frosé at the Coral Casino and the Indian was an whimsical outdoor enthused model with an Under Canvas tipi as her lodging. In the end we chose the more minimal contemporary western look. Don’t worry both made it into this issue. Let’s start with Frosé, because who isn’t thirsty this time of the year. Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara recently released their summer drink at the Coral Cafe and we couldn’t wait to get our hands on it pre release. For this shoot we hand picked a hat and model from Allora by Laura, strolled one early morning to the Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club and had a sunny shoot sipping Frosé, moving umbrellas and tanning. With all the May gray and June gloom every time the sun is out we make it mandatory for our staff to get outside. For Frosé All Day we present a light and refreshing introduction to this frozen drink that’s being served by the batches all summer at your favorite resort. For Welcome to the West, we introduce you to Under Canvas tents and tipis as well as Zaca Creek Ranch off of the 101 in Buellton. After two months of planning, which escalated in the last couple weeks, we arrived early one Wednesday morning. The owner and his gangly brown lab Tucker introduced us to the property, which includes, goats, chickens, long horn steer, horses, and two alpacas (hilariously freshly shaved except the tops of their heads). Quickly things and pieces started coming together. Slate Catering arrived with a slew of cheeses, sausage, fruits, and edible flowers. Meanwhile Katarina transformed the empty tents into welcoming pillow-filled dwellings. The prettiest wispy clouds replaced the fog, revealing endless rolling hills of grazing cows and scattered oak trees, making for an idyllic shoot day and cover image.

Viva Corazón I ADMIT IT…I AM A TACO ADDICT. I never seem to tire of this Mexican food staple that makes its way into my stomach on a weekly basis. So, as I walk up to the counter at Corazón Cocina on a busy Saturday afternoon, I can’t help but get excited. And, because I am a regular patron of Corazón and know just how delicious the tacos are (and how tasty everything else is, too), I don’t mind the exceptionally long line today. It is a holiday weekend, after all, and the vibe inside the Santa Barbara Public Market is lively and infectious. When I reach the counter, I’m greeted by Manager Alexandria, who mentions that Chef and Owner Ramón Velazquez is on his way back from buying produce at the farmers’ market. We get my order in and I grab one of the half dozen seats at the bar counter overlooking the action in the open kitchen. The fresh scent of limes being zested can only be upstaged by the whiffs of hot tortillas being made in front of us. I watch as another cook garnishes a bowl of freshly mashed avocados. Corazón Cocina’s casual spot in the Santa Barbara Public Market is Chef Velazquez’s first permanent restaurant. Formerly operating as a Sunday pop-up downtown, Corazón earned a devoted following well before arriving to its home in the Public Market, where that pop-up spirit lives on. For mouthwatering, inventive Mexican cuisine that is quick and easy, it’s hard to beat. Focused on using locally-sourced, seasonal ingredients like farmers’ market vegetables and sustainable fish, every dish delights with flavors that pay homage to Mexico while complementing the seasonally-driven food scene of Santa Barbara. @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 21

Sayulita Ceviche 22 | JULY/AUGUST 2017

Sal De Mar Ceviche

I start with an order of guacamole that’s topped with serrano chiles, cilantro, onions, and toasted pepitas. It’s seasoned to perfection, showcasing a lot of flavor without masking the addictiveness of the creamy avocado. Served with salty chips, I can’t help but devour bite after bite. With the arrival of my tray of fresh ceviche, delectable tacos and inventive specials, my eyes light up taking in all the different colors adorning the enticing food. It doesn’t matter that everything is served on cafeteria trays in disposable bowls and plates…all the more reason to focus on the food.

I decide to start with the beautifully presented Sal De Mar Ceviche Tostada. Made with local yellowtail, watermelon, avocado, cucumber, fresno chile, pomegranate, and hibiscus aguachile, it almost looks too pretty to eat. This is no doubt a hit with the foodies of Instagram, and I too succumb to snapping a photo before I dig in. With just the faintest hint of spice, it tastes super fresh and every bite brings a different burst of flavor. Chef Velazquez appears in the kitchen, peering over the glass divider to ask how the food is so far. I share how fresh and flavorful everything is before he goes on to explain what’s in the Tía Juana Taco in front of me. The mix of Spanish Octopus, grilled shrimp, seared cheese, @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 23

and anaheim chile is delightful. Topped with pickled onions, radish and peanut arbol salsa, it fuses together tender seafood with a pop of brightness from the produce and richness from the peanut salsa. I ask if there’s a certain region of Mexico where he draws his inspiration from. “I love every region of Mexico, as they’re all unique and beautiful in their own way,” he responds. “But lately a lot of my inspirations have come from Baja and the Yucatán regions. Amazing cuisine inspired by what’s around them, which is how we like to cook here at Corazón.” I move on to two favorite items from the menu, the Quesadilla De Mercado and Norteño Taco. The vegetarian quesadilla–served open face on a blue corn tortilla with seared panela and Oaxaca cheese–is packed with seasonal veggies like broccolini and sweet bits of corn, then topped with a crunchy almond arbol salsa. Delicious. The Norteño, on the other hand, brings an entirely different flavor profile. Every bite is satisfyingly rich, with the char of the grilled skirt steak asada and creaminess of the guacamole melding perfectly with the melted cheese and smoky beans. I know more than a few people who order this hearty taco weekly, my husband included, and I now understand why it’s so popular.

Just when I think I can’t take another bite, I give in to the smell of the Doraditos, a special on today’s menu. A play on the tacos Chef Velazquez enjoyed as a kid in Guadalajara, three tortillas are filled with potatoes, cheese, and poblano chiles and served lightly fried. They sit on a bed of tomato broth and are topped with queso fresco, crema, jalapeño, radish, lettuce, and pickled onion. Light yet satisfying, I see these tasty taquitos becoming a regular item on the menu. As I go for one last bite of guacamole, I take a look back at the line– which is still going strong by the way–full of happy patrons eagerly perusing the menu board above. After filling myself with so many appealing flavors, I get up from my chair so someone else can sit and enjoy their choice of Chef Velazquez’s inventive, regional Mexican food. It’s clear the self-taught former sushi chef has found his heart, or corazón, in cooking food that glorifies the different regions of his homeland, and this taco addict will most certainly be back for more!

or me growing up with three siblings, living in a community of 10,000 people and having parents that truly valued eating healthy, equated to rarely if ever eating out. On special occasions when we ventured out it almost always meant Mexican food. The food was always good and I can still see in my mind a bustling table, of shared dishes, laughter and love. Now I’m in restaurants almost daily, sometimes for work sometimes not, and there are times that I become complacent towards dining in restaurants. Feelings of been there, done that often overwhelm. That was until I stepped into the recently opened Somerset. As I pepper up the facade, my girlfriend by my side, bright circular orbs of light are reflecting through the windows. I’m mindful of my steps because these sun shaped light fixtures that glow orange have my mind so incapsulated. We cross the threshold and a friendly hostess welcomes us to our 8 p.m. reservation. Behind her is the main dining room, it’s sleek beyond belief. Polished zinc table tops are complemented by mustard yellow 50s era chairs and lighting. Diamond patterned tile work and a wrapping deep set chesterfield sofa finish off the room. My mind and eyes aren’t thinking of anything other than the aesthetic.

The Duck Hunter’s Old Fashioned

An evening as pleasing to the eyes as to the palate at Steve Hermann’s local restaurant

The hostess ushers us past a bustling bar to our courtyard table and I’m instantly in a bubble. We are seated under a canopy of 100 year old olive trees, raised in rubble stone planters. In the back of the courtyard @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 27

is a large burning stone fireplace. Our neighbor is having a continuous conversation, wait staff are coming and going, yet this atmosphere has infused into me an appreciation for presence. Bronze portable heaters from either side warm both me and my girlfriend, we are wanting for nothing. We begin with cocktails. I order The Duck Hunter’s Old Fashioned, my girlfriend orders the In the Pines. Somerset Bar Director George Piperis’ craft cocktails routinely find notoriety in Santa Barbara. I’ve had his delicious drinks at several locations and am always impressed. Tonight is no different. Traditionally I go for rye old fashioned drinks but Somerset’s bourbon based concoction is silky smooth; the robust and intense flavor of the bourbon is accentuated by mild savoriness from the duck fat, all topped off with the slightest hint of mint from the thyme. I could easily subsist on just these but there are so many incredible options and pairing each dish with the right drink is something I’m always willing to attempt. It’s when we get to the Spaghetti with Santa Barbara uni, lobster bisque and nori breadcrumbs that my palate truly comes alive and starts to feel Chef Lauren Herman’s vision. The simplicity of the complement to the pasta allows me to fully enjoy the noodles themselves. I’m accustomed to spaghetti being a lot about the noodles but equally about the extras. In this dish, the texture, mouth feel and experience is that of old world Italian pasta.

28 | JULY/AUGUST 2017

Brined Pork Chop

For our main course we order the Flank Steak. The meat is cooked to perfection. It’s juicy, tender and full of robust flavors. This dish in particular reminds me of my sibling rivalries; my girlfriend and I battle over bites. In the end chivalry gives her the final taste. We discuss the flavors over shared sips of our second round. I will candidly say this, the cocktails are a must, each and every one. For dessert we couldn’t resist the Coconut Milk Panna Cotta. We dive right into the custard and lemon verbena granita, scooping up sliced apricots, raspberries and Santa Barbara pistachios. Pastry Chef Christina Olufson’s mixture of flavors and textures instantly delights. I was already satisfied yet this refreshing dessert took me to an entirely new level of food appreciation. I have only had a glimpse into the interior, cuisine and beverages of Somerset yet I know I will go back for more. This location, atmosphere, its menu, and of course the aesthetic, demand our curiosity and it’s about time we start paying better attention to what’s important. Let’s start here!

IT’S FINALLY SUMMER, despite the fluffy cloud blanket that’s snuggling our little slice of heaven, and that means poolside-lounging season is officially open. Everyone knows that the best place to catch some rays in town is at the Coral Casino Beach and Cabana Club. Between the panoramic views of Butterfly Beach and the cruise shipinspired modern décor, the club is meant for seeing and being seen. A day of tanning and relaxing wouldn’t be complete without a drink though…enter, the Frosé. This adult beverage brings on some serious nostalgia with its slurpee-like texture, but we promise you won’t mistake this luxe cocktail for the sugary treat of your childhood. Made with the hot wine-of-the-moment, rosé, this beverage is the epitome of summer—it’s fruity and flirty, light and easy, and most importantly, it looks as good as it tastes! The Four Seasons team found inspiration for their Frosé while on a trip to Austin, Texas, at a local bar that serves up frozen wine concoctions. Of course, in order to bring the idea to fruition it had to meet Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara’s high-end standards.

And so was born the partnership with Beau Joie Champagne. A leader in the world of bubbly, Beau Joie provided their Frosé-making machine and a decadent sparkling rosé, and just like that, the strawberry-infused cocktail was created. The sweetness of the strawberry simple syrup complements the fruity notes of the wine without being overpowering, yet it keeps the drink from tasting like alcohol—a must for daytime drinking. From the unique, icy texture to the luxurious addition of sparkling rosé (while most cocktails stick to flat varieties) and fresh bits of local strawberries, it’s bound to become the cocktail of the season. The rich coral tone of the drink is convenient in keeping with the beach club’s color palette, making it ideal for both quenching your thirst, and a photo-op by the pool. The cocktail will be exclusively available at the Coral Cafe, which is open to club members and overnight guests of Four Seasons Resort The Biltmore Santa Barbara, making it more coveted than a glass of Dom. So drop by, grab a Frosé and enjoy a day of soaking up the sun, Santa Barbara style.

SAVING FACE SUMMER TIPS to Keeping Your Skin Healthy Written by Dee Dee Serpa-Wickman Whether it’s from entertaining outdoors or sunshine rays pouring through your sunroof, it’s almost impossible to avoid sun exposure in coastal California. There is no question, we need the sun and its benefits. It is essential to our mental health and provides us with vitamin D for strong bones. What we don’t need are the negative effects that come with it. Exposure to the sun causes free radicals to form in the skin. These free radicals attack the skin causing major changes including collagen breakdown, loss of elasticity, hyper pigmentation, wrinkles, and even skin cancer.

Here are 10 tips to keeping your skin healthy

hoose a non-comedogenic full spectrum SPF 30 physical block which is protection against the entire UV spectrum. C There are 2 types of UV rays: UVA and UVB. UVA rays penetrate through clouds and glass and 30-40 times deeper into the skin. UVB rays burn the skin. Physical blocks includes zinc, titanium oxide and micronized titanium. Wear long sleeves during prolonged exposure to sun.

Wear at least a 4 1/2” wide brimmed hat. There are companies that make hats with UPF protection.

4.

Wear sunglasses with a 1”-1 1/2” wide temple to protect the side of your eye area where crow’s feet develop.

5.

Tint your vehicle windows.

6.

Keep hydrated! Drink an extra glass of water for every cup of coffee, black tea or alcoholic beverage.

7.

Eat more antioxidants, which are molecules than can safely terminate the oxidation chain reaction before cells are badly

8.

Cleanse your face every evening, not only to remove makeup and sunscreen, but also environmental particles which cause

damaged. They are found in blueberries, goji berries and leafy greens, to name a few. These nutrient rich foods will help combat free radical damage. premature aging.

9. Choose result oriented products with these essential ingredients in your home care protocol.

Vitamin C & E are intertwined in their activity and are important in protecting and treating the skin from sun damage. Vitamin A is an essential ingredient to prevent, restore, normalize, and repair damaged skin. Peptides are highly efficient in stimulating the healing process, building and repairing the dermis. Growth Factors is a super antioxidant. It also resolves inflammation and stimulates the proliferation of epidermal cells.

10.

Get regular clinical facial treatments with a result oriented skin practitioner. There are a variety of modalities to treat

skin conditions, such as oxygen therapy (healing windburn, sunburn), firming and toning, lightening pigmentation, and intense hydration.

Get Your Zen On

Despite the leisurely feel of our resort town, lately it’s been feeling less Namaste and more non-stop. Between a sea of coffee dates, weekends away, wardrobe cleansing, and trying all the appetizers at that new place on Ortega, there’s certainly a lot to focus on. Personal wellness goals seem to be the most easily set adrift, steered by a spontaneous Wellness Shot when we walk by Pressed Juicery. The closest we get to tree pose is the broccoli section at Trader Joe’s, downward dog is replaced with the dog groomer, and worry replaces warrior.

In our little section of the universe—for those interested in the astrology of it—a full moon is considered the best time to amplify energy towards specific intentions. Like the intention to take more time for yourself, focus less on what’s outside your control, or to start building a truly remarkable summer sandal collection. To uphold these intentions, we must know them and know what’s getting in the way.

The ascent to Belmond El Encanto is always so dang metaphorical. Whatever afternoon you’re cruising up the hills, there’s this natural physical sense of leaving the chatter behind to move toward a calm, sacred space, with a good view and a really good piano player.

Yoga practice is being held on a balcony above the Dining Room patio; it’s a small class gazing over the fading sunlight of the American Riviera. Drenched in the lilac shades of dusk, rigs are starting to sparkle—that’s the cue for our golden hour. If you’ve discovered the Santa Barbara views from Belmond El Encanto’s Dining Room balcony, you know a signature Samurai cocktail is always served with a complimentary surge of gratitude. It really doesn’t get better than this. That noted, let’s appreciate how outstanding it is to do yoga overlooking this city. Full Moon Yoga instructor, Nora Tobin, who leads Belmond El Encanto’s nutrition and fitness classes, keeps the class simplified, an opportunity to focus energy inward.

Step 1 of Full Moon Yoga: face your fullness to see what things may be blocking it. Inhale. Step 2 of Full Moon Yoga: let go of all those things. Exhale. That inhale better have been a big one, because this exhale lasts until the full moon releases its last bit of light and becomes new. What no longer serves you must wane with the light, so throw that stuff into the drain of the moon bath.

Blatantly blocking the fullness of tonight’s moon happens to be rare cloud cover, likely the only reason we didn’t sit under the stars with that view until morning. Instead, we descend into the comforts of fireside wine and easy conversation. Angela Ballard Lane wine is tonight’s tasting and pairs perfectly with a piano performance and sneak peeks into the Belmond El Encanto’s soon to be expanding selection of Louis XII Cognac. There seems to be a complimentary surge of gratitude with this glass too. It feels good to be centered; to be letting go; to be a warrior of self-wellness.

Any moon-bathed moment of yoga is intentional time well spent. Mention this summer issue to access the Belmond El Encanto Full Moon Yoga experience. Your reader rate will include Full Moon Yoga with Nora, a Belmond El Encanto day pass, same-day fitness classes, resort pool access, day-use of the spa facilities, and a seat in the steam room. Held summer nights when the moon is full, a variety of class locations are in the cycle—we’re looking forward to the reflection pool for double the moon power. Exclusive Full Moon Yoga Package for $200 or $75 each class.

STAIR

Beyond Yoga Sports Bra & Leggings, Drishti 38 | JULY/AUGUST 2017

Now that summer is here, we should all be giving our gym memberships a break while we break a sweat. Let your lungs fill up with fresh air and let your skin soak up vitamin D while leaving the filthy, smelly, recycled air and people watching behind. Take your workout to the Santa Barbara sand, hills and stairs to boost your burn and tone in less time. When you’re outdoors your body is constantly challenged by obstacles, inclines and declines. The Santa Barbara stairs provide access to the best cardio and strength equipment anywhere. Not only are stairs made for a killer workout but stairs raise your heart rate and your metabolism immediately switches into fat burning mode as you rep out each set. You will boost your calorie burn and hit every muscle you would never hit on your beloved machines.

Sprint again! Run as fast as possible up the stairs. Keep your abs engaged and use your arms. Once you reach the top walk down.

STEP into a beach body workout!

Tips & Tricks Q&A

Crank up your favorite playlist and repeat this total body circuit 3x. To make it more advanced add sprints in between sets! Before you begin, stretch your total body—especially your quads, calves, hamstrings, and glutes—for 5 minutes. Warm up with an easy jog up and down the stairs 3x (up and down counts as one time). Circuit (start at the base of the stairs): 15 Push ups Sprint up and down—run as fast as possible up the stairs. Keep your abs engaged and use your arms. Once you reach the top walk down. Plank to opposite elbow—place both hands on the stairs and get into full plank position. Your feet should be shoulder width apart and your wrists directly below your shoulders. Engage your abs. Draw your left knee into your right elbow and then your right knee to your left elbow. Step ups with a leg raise—step one foot up, pressing through the heel of that foot lift the opposite leg behind you and contract your glutes. Alternate legs to the top of the stairs. Once you reach the top jog down. Tricep dips—place your hands on the stairs, slightly bend your elbow and then extend up, squeezing your tricep muscles. Do 15 reps.

Skip a step—walk up skipping a step and contracting your glutes to double the calorie burn. When you reach the top of the stairs squat 15 reps. Walk down the stairs. Lunge—lunge up the steps and jog down. Side lateral walks—pick your left or right side and walk up the steps sideways. Switch sides halfway up the stairs. This helps target the inner thighs.

WHAT HELPS YOU GET THROUGH TOUGH WORKOUTS? Charlene: Ask yourself “why are you here?” This helps you be present in the moment. It’s the only way to succeed. You come here to work on your goals and get results. Be present and do what you set out to do! WHAT HELPS YOU STAY ON TRACK? For me preparation and organization is key to success. I pick one day to meal prep for the week. Taking a few minutes to sit down and plan my meals and grocery list for the week helps me stay on track with fueling my body. WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU BEGIN TO LOSE MOTIVATION? Pick up the phone and call a buddy! Life throws us obstacles, curve balls, etc. sometimes it’s hard to find the time, but you must remember you can achieve fast results with only 20-30 minutes a day. Drop the excuses and work efficiently. Calling a buddy will help motivate and keep each other accountable. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING OUTDOORS? I love to create new workouts! Taking advantage of the the beautiful Santa Barbara outdoors will help prevent you from boredom. You can change up your workout and train at a park, beach or hill. Changing scenery and energy keeps your workouts fun. You don’t need a gym to build a beach body. WHAT’S YOUR NUTRITION ADVICE? I believe in balanced meals to build a balanced body. It’s important to keep your blood sugar stabilized and eat every 2-4 hours. All my meals throughout the day consist of a protein, carbohydrate and healthy fat. When your blood sugar is stabilized it prevents you from grabbing the cakes and chips. I have an ebook called Shut Up for 7! It’s a 7 day jumpstart to weight loss with simple and grab-and-go meals. I tried to consider everyone’s busy lives when customizing my meal plan! You can find my book at www.shutupandmove.com WHAT’S ONE TIP YOU ALWAYS TELL CLIENTS? H2O not only keeps you hydrated, but it also helps with weight loss. I drink a glass with every meal to make sure I consume enough water throughout my day! It also helps keep your skin glowing. I love to flavor my water with fruits, lemons, strawberries, and oranges.

FUN IN THE SUN VALLEY

Written by Robin Berger

Picture this, I’m 12 years old and heading down a steady decline of fresh powder, the sun glistening on my fitted skis—a picturesque moment in time that ends with a drastic turn and a face plant into a flurry of snow. Before I register the distinct color change of white to red (followed by embarrassment and a new set of braces), life has flashed before my eyes. Today, over a decade later, I am back in Sun Valley, Idaho, staring up at the daunting Bald Eagle mountain. Thankfully, it’s 73 degrees and the summer sun is peeking through the pines. I have a theory I won’t fall this time.

...within minutes of meeting Wendy I conclude she is everything you’d want your grandma, friend or future self to be. Her expertise is captivating and her calm demeanor eases me as I learn how to shoot a shotgun.

Adjusting to the altitude, I head to the resort’s gym, which has an Equinox-like ambiance. I grasp the unlikelihood of my lungs completing my Santa Barbara sea level workout, and 30 minutes in I’m already finished and ready to relax by the pool. A ping of fruitful flavors greets my palate as I munch on a kale, quinoa, peach, and sweet corn salad from the poolside café. Perfectly paired, I sip on the Namaste, a mixture of Buddha’s Hand Citron, coconut water and acai berry juice, which tastes like post yoga class bliss. After a power nap I touch up my cheek bones with pink blush and head down to the resort’s bar. The rich burgundy and cedar wood decor and dark marble surrounding the opulent fireplace give it a 1920s speakeasy vibe. I nestle into a thick leather chair at the edge of the bar and order the Petite Amour, mainly because it says it’s made with a little love. After my first sip I might oppose that statement and say with a lot of love. The combination of Vodka, elderflower liqueur, grapefruit juice, and prosecco creates just the right amount of romance and charm with its velvety taste. I accompany it with light tempura green beans dipped in sesame honey mustard sauce and they vanish through a jumble of conversation with the bartender.

76 | JULY/AUGUST 2017

The long driveway into Sun Valley Lodge leads to a light and airy lobby, adorned with hand woven rugs and dark wood furnishings that are begging me to sit by the majestic fireplace and sip Pinot. Once in my suite I toss my weekend tote in front of the panorama view of freshly bedded perennials and the Pavilion, which I’d later find is built with the same marble as the Coliseum. The historical touches throughout the recently renovated property reflect Mr. and Mrs. Holding’s attention to detail and propensity for travel.

For dinner I move on to a cozy outdoor table at Gretchen’s. Overlooking the ice rink I enjoy sweet corn soup with lobster puree and melt-in-your-mouth Alaskan King Salmon with grilled asparagus, crisp sunchokes and sweet corn salsa, paired with Rombauer Chardonnay and a figure skating spectacle. Come morning, the perch outside my window holds a home to a chirping and very natural alarm clock. The serenity dissipates as I fully awaken with a burst of excitement—today is my sport shooting lesson with Wendy Collins. Mustard covered hills lead me to the facility in the Rocky Mountain West and within minutes of meeting Wendy I conclude she is everything you’d want your grandma, friend or future self to be. Her expertise is captivating and her calm demeanor eases me as I learn how to shoot a shotgun. I’ve never held a gun and I’m slowly starting to feel like a newer, cooler version of myself.

After the lesson I feel prepared to take on the world, but Bald Mountain will have to do. The thin trail to the summit is lined by pines and freshly pollinated flowers cover the hills. As I reach the 9,100 foot peak I breathe in a long and slow breath; the tranquility is enchanting, my lungs fill with the serene and cold air as I gaze at the horizon. Sights like this are what living is for. embark on an adrenaline-

I inducing mountain bike ride through the dense forest. The chill of the air is refreshing as I pedal over rocks and fallen trees.

I munch on a turkey and brie sandwich at the iconic mountaintop restaurant the Roadhouse; the cabin like atmosphere is a hot spot in the winter months for guests to enjoy a hot toddy and warm up by the wood burning fireplace. I picture myself up here come ski season, so many years later, and fearless, before heading back down the mountain via gondola.

In the evening I head to the Ram for dinner. I feel the summer sun slowly disappearing over the foothills as I indulge in cheese fondue with apple slices, pickled grapes, potatoes, and baguette cubes. I polish off a ribeye accompanied by blistered heirloom cherry tomatoes, broccollini, buttermilk Idaho russet mashed potatoes, and a blue cheese demi-glace. Content would be a understatement. The following morning, as the dew dissipates off my North Face, I embark on an adrenaline-inducing mountain bike ride through the dense forest. The chill of the air is refreshing as I pedal over rocks and fallen trees. To wrap up my adventurous trip, a well earned hydro-facial is in order. Arriving at the spa the sleek intricate design pulls me in with awe and I’m suddenly in a cloud of a revolutionary nonsurgical procedure that leaves my skin glowing and refreshed just in time for my flight home. As I nestle into seat 16A, I reflect on my picture perfect trip and smile out at my window—I didn’t fall this time. www.sunvalley.com

Written by Robin Berger You always feel special in Las Vegas, but this weekend I’m feeling extra special... As I enter the marbled lobby of The Venetian, I’m surrounded by exquisite orchids and exorbitant chandeliers. Tao nightclub is to my left, Prada and Louis Vuitton to my right, I’m already in awe of the opulence, and I haven’t even made it to my La Dolce Vita suite. Only one thing is certain, my lavish weekend in this iconic town of miniature cities, area attractions and general extravagance will renounce my initial relationship with Las Vegas. A combination of textured linens and cream couches highlight my suite and an array of Champagne and fruit platters welcomes my arrival. I review my agenda full of spa treatments, leisure time for exploring, and, the most noteworthy reason I’m here, the Love & Vine event, which takes place every October. An elegant evening dripping in calorie covered happiness is in my near future and I’m already wishing for the sun to set and 7 o’clock to roll around. @ S B L I F E A N D S T Y L E | 79

One glass of Champagne and a quick rinse later I’m slipping into a black silk dress in the luxurious bathroom with a soaking tub, shower and vanity. I land at The Palazzo pool nodding to a blue jazz band. Roaming around the swanky lit pools I chat with each acclaimed chef, I grasp the majority are from France—Olivier Dubreuil, Jean-Louis Dumonet and Claude Le-Tohic are among those gracing us with their presence and culinary talents tonight. I sip on my first pairing of the evening, a 2013 Banyuls dessert wine. The OMG moment follows with a citrus cream and almond biscuit, before slowly losing its spotlight as I’m weak in the knees for a vanilla, coffee and butternut squash amuse bouche. France, and more specifically David Werly has won my heart, via my taste buds and, well, butternut squash. I nibble on a medley of beef tataki, nori and Russian osetra caviar, washed down with Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Rose. If sleek sophistication had a taste, this pairing would be it. Walking past the red carpet and flashing lights I settle into one of the white couches surrounding the band to enjoy my Yakitori grilled scallops with yuzu panna cotta, red quinoa and buckwheat soil and Moet & Chandon Imperial Brut. The simple dish coats my mouth with a fresh and lively burst of earthy flavor, and right before I make my way for seconds I find the thai spiced lobster with green apple and mango. Complemented by Domaine Bott Freres Riesling, elegance is all I taste. Soon after, my gaze falls on dessert. I have Chef Thomas Bellec to thank for a sugar cloud with calvados ice cream, caramelized apple and vanilla creme anglaise. The intricate flavors of every dish, in true Vegas fashion, leave me wanting more.

80 | JULY/AUGUST 2017

The blackout shades do justice to my food coma that drags on into the morning, so after a quick sweat at the gym (which has a rock climbing wall by the way), I check into the 134,000 square foot Canyon Ranch SpaClub, aka the spa of my dreams, and wrap myself in a fuzzy robe. The rejuvenating Finnish sauna, crystal steam room and HydroSpa put me in a state of bliss. I feel a world away, tucked in the award winning spa—detoxifying my pores, redirecting my mind and body—all in a mist of lavender and lemongrass. I finish my exploration of the spa in the Igloo, which evokes a feeling of being in nature with its starlit mosaics and relaxation chairs. Post-rain shower, I walk to the adjacent Canyon Ranch Cafe and order the Healthy Elvis, a grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich, to complement the healthiest and most relaxing day I’ve experienced to date, at least in Vegas. With my well-being at an all time high, I dab on SPF, grab my book, and catch the last of the 82 degree Las Vegas rays. A relaxed autumn afternoon in the desert and and a few tan lines later I submerge myself in a bubble bath while contemplating my previous relationship with Las Vegas, and I come to realize that whatever you’re doing, wherever you are, life (and Vegas) is what you make it.
