Approach shots (Any shot you play attempting to go to the green)
T
heoretically the approach shot is the most difficult aspect of golf for various reasons and I would like to educate you on why that is: 1. Distance and Direction are both important Golf in general is a game of controlling the distance and direction of the ball to get a desired result, but with approach shots the consequence of missing one or the other has a greater impact on your score. See it in the following x-y line diagram below.

Balance difficulty because stance and setup always different Unlike a tee box which is supposed to be level, with approach shots you will find that besides the lie, you very seldom get a level stance where the ball is not either below or above your feet or your front foot above or below your back foot. This makes it difficult to maintain balance which makes it harder to make good contact and control the club face. 4. You have twelve clubs to navigate through, not just 1 or 2
2. More difficult to consistently make good contact Unlike driving where the ball is teed up and putting where the grass is very short, approach shots can be found in so many different lies in different lengths of grass or even sand. This

Approach shots can be anywhere between 50m and 220m depending on each player. As mentioned earlier controlling the correct distance is important, not just hitting the ball as far as you can. So you need to know the distances that you can cover with each club and when to choose what club for the type of shot you need to play. I would recommend you book a gap testing session to see what distances you hit your clubs. 5. You do not always have a full shot It often happens that you end up with a distance that is in between the distance you hit certain clubs. This then requires that you either hit a club harder

tuition & instruction or softer to get the desired distance. You will also swing the club softer if you need to hit the ball lower and vice versa to hit it higher. Here is an example of how bad approach shots can cost you over time using the Golf Stats Coach: Jordan Spieth in 2015 was 2nd on the OWGR with good Approach shot stats vs his 2019 season where he dropped to 56th on the OWGR with better putting stats but worse driver and approach play. If a pro gets this much insight in strokes gained stats, how much more won’t you? Visit www.golfstatscoach.com for more info.
So how do you navigate through all of this to hit better golf shots? Here are the main the factors that have an effect on your approach shots. Strike - practice hitting the middle of the club face more often. Please follow SA Golf Trader social media to see how you can measure where you mostly strike the ball. Club face angle - practice to get the club face at the correct angle at impact relative to target. Club path - get the club moving towards the target through impact. Loft of club - choose the correct club for the shot you want to play. Angle of attack - hit into the back of the ball, not trying to lift the ball in the air. Club head speed - control the speed the club moves according to the shot you want to play. Although most of these factors come into play with professional players, you might benefit highly by just putting your focus on one or two

of the areas. That is why I would suggest you download the Golf Coach App and register a free student account using my coach code: coachandre. I will do a free evaluation for you to help you understand where you should apply your attention to. You need to understand that more information will not make you a better player or increase your skill, but once you do have more knowledge you definitely need to have some sort of feedback tool like the Golf Coach App that you can use to get the feedback on your personal issues as well as someone that can interpret the feedback for you. Without constructive feedback any form of reading up or practice is pretty futile as it can cause more confusion than move you forward to your goals. 1. When did you qualify as a PGA Professional? 2002. 2. What made you choose this career? I absolutely love golf and everything associated with golf! My last few years in school when everyone sort of chose a career or what they going to do after school, my option A, was golf, my option B, was also golf. My dad used to laugh at me...no back up plan...only golf! 3. Has it always been golf for you? Mostly yes. I managed to get involved in software development a few years ago and did a few non-golf developments, but I never stopped working in the golf industry. 4. Did you ever play or did you ever want to play on tour? Yes I played on the Sunshine Tour for a few years and also through my PGA membership I played in a few PGA Championships 5. Who has been you mentor in the golfing industry? It started with Adrienne Thorne in Metropolitan – who taught me basically everything I know today about running a business. 6. You have been at Pecanwood for a while now, what are your biggest challenges at a residential golf estate? My biggest challenge is to keep our members happy with the end product. The nature of our business at Pecanwood is we run a semi-private club with 95% of our members also being residents – they play golf 3 times a week, eat at the restaurant 4 times a week and use the facilities

on a daily basis, therefor we constantly need to make sure the end product is always on par, which is a good challenge! 7. Describe a typical work day for a PGA Club Professional? I love being involved in all the divisions and keep my finger on the pulse at all times. My day starts with a course inspection, followed up by a staff meeting to check our goals for the day, I then proceed with my to do list and make sure I respond to all my mails. I try and balance meetings with board members and senior management on a daily basis but also set up meetings outside of busy times at the club, for instance I know when golfers check-in and I know when its busy in the clubhouse, in those times I want to be around my members to engage with them, I don’t want to be in meetings then. I finish the day with another drive around in the estate to check that all tasks were done, setup our to do list for the following day and then go and have a coffee with my members in the clubhouse. 8. During the current lockdown we find ourselves in due to the Covid-19 virus, how do you keep yourself busy? I must say the lockdown is keeping me busier than ever before, many great webinars to learn from other countries and industries – trying to figure out the new normal. I meet with our board members almost daily to ensure we make the right moves to survive this unprecedented time.

HEALTH & LIFEST YLE 9. Do you have any tips, training videos etc you can recommend to people during the lockdown? For industry professionals: The PGA’s around the world have great webinars going on at the moment, I also enjoy our Club Managers Association discussions. But my favourite is Trendwatching on www.trendwatching.com, I have seen great innovative ideas which I have implemented already that work great! For the amateur golfer: I love the website and tips of George Gankas on www.georgegankas.golf 10. Golf courses are allowed basic maintenance, what does this consist of? At the moment we can allow 30% of our staff compliment on site to maintain our biggest asset. 11. With consumers already being careful on how they spend their money these days (pre covid-19), what would your plan be to attract people to the club after lockdown? I don’t think there is a recipe for this but I believe, consumers want to feel safe, that they can trust you and that safety is now a priority. The latter combined with great service and value for money should do the trick. But NO discounts!! - not in this time...we need to survive. 12. Slow play is one of the biggest problems in golf today, how do you manage slow play at Pecanwood? I love this topic, each course is different and they play different, again no recipe I believe but we looked at two things, how our course was setup, not only tees but also ‘no go zones’ with carts, we brought our ‘no zone’ areas closer to the greens (we manage this and move it weekly to avoid damage). Secondly, one needs to rely on technology to give you actual data to take action in order to be affective – I love TagMarshal here, the best I have seen!

13. The members of a golf club always come first. Do you agree with the phrase “The member is always right”? Another great question...Yes I believe they are always right especially when it comes to their expectations. I studied Carol Dweck’s theory of Growth Mindset and it definitely helped me understand that one can still grow from any situation even when you get questioned or put under pressure. 14. What are your short & long term goals? Short-term: Pecanwood Estate went through a few bad patches and my mission is to get it back to where I believe it should be, better ranked golf course and 5-star facility. Long-term: Would really love to have a shot on the seniors tour one day and definitely be a leader in the golf industry. 15. Covid-19 aside, what is your opinion on the state of golf in South Africa? I think its good for now but it needs to change big time to keep delivering good players and be a sustainable industry. Young golfers must create a love for studying in order to go to top US universities to further their studies and play college golf. Many great talented SA golfers don’t follow this route and then eventually go missing. We need to get many more middle class income earners into golf…we are one of a few countries globally where our middle class income group and number of registered golfers are completely out of sink. 17. Do you still get time to play? Not as much as I like to but I do have my weekly round of golf with my members and can still get it under par every now and again!

The Match: Champions for Charity with Woods, Mickelson, Manning and Brady
T
urner Sports will present Capital One’s The Match: Champions for Charity, a blockbuster live golf competition headlined by golf icons Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson returning for a rematch, this time joined by Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, two of the NFL’s greatest players of all time. The premier sports event will be held Sunday, May 24, at 2 p.m. ET, with the live telecast, WarnerMedia and the golfers will collectively make a charitable donation of $10 million to benefit COVID-19 relief. As part of the fundraising efforts, the competition will also include a partnership with the ALL IN Challenge, along with additional on-course competitive

challenges for charity. “The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unimaginable tragedy and heartbreak,” said Jeff Zucker, Chairman, WarnerMedia News and Sports. “We’re hopeful this event and platform will help raise meaningful funding for COVID-19 relief, while also providing a source of brief distraction and entertainment for all sports fans.” Capital One’s The Match: Champions for Charity, a sanctioned PGA TOUR event, will be held at the prestigious Medalist GC in Florida! the renowned course acts as the home course to many PGA TOUR players including Tiger Woods. NE WS CLIP preparation for the event, tournament organizers are working with state and local government and public health officials on competition and production logistics to ensure the event follows safety and health protocols. The competition will feature Woods and Manning vs. Mickelson and Brady, facing off in a Best Ball format on the front nine and a Modified Alternate Shot format on the back nine. The unique combination of formats is aimed to provide an entertaining mix of strategy, team collaboration and consequence to nearly every shot. As part of the competitive play, there will also be a set of on-course challenges to raise additional charitable funds. Live coverage will feature unprecedented access with all players having open mics throughout the entire competition, including the capability to communicate directly with other golfers and the broadcast commentators.

The media agreement with WarnerMedia and Turner Sports was completed in partnership between Excel Sports Management and Lagardère Sports. Excel, which represents both Woods and Manning, and Lagardère Sports, which represents Mickelson, are also the tournament organizers. Turner Sports is proud to be working with a number of marketing partners to host Capital One’s The Match: Champions for Charity, in service of maximizing COVID-19 relief. Capital One is returning as title sponsor and will collaborate closely with Turner Sports on a number of social, digital and broadcast integrations leading up to and during the live event. Woods and Mickelson previously faced off in Capital One’s The Match in November 2018 at Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. Tied following 18 holes, Mickelson won on the fourth playoff hole.

Social-distancing spacer denies Spieth hole-in-one at charity tournament

Playing as an unofficial marker in the Maridoe Samaritan Fund Invitational in April, Spieth seemed to ace the 110-yard 17th hole, but his ball ricocheted off the social-distancing spacer in the hole and splashed in the lake. He said he would count it as an ace, nonetheless. “It was my first one in probably three or four years,” Spieth said in an interview with tournament organizers afterward. “I had a nice little three- or four-year stretch where I made a lot, but I’ve been shut out for a while, so hopefully it’s a good omen. “It didn’t slam the cup or anything,” he added. “I think it was one of those ones that would’ve most likely stayed in. It kind of rattled around awhile and then it and the washer came up into the air.”

The tournament was a fundraiser for sidelined caddies and took place at Spieth’s home club. He was later told the club would count the shot as a hole-in-one. Tony Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and now CBS football analyst, struggled to a 20-over total and finished 39th. Also a Maridoe member, he played in the same group as friend Spieth and said he would count Spieth’s ace as a double-bogey in their match. “It was really fun to be out here playing in something competitive,” Spieth said. “I was bummed to miss the last two days, but being out here today, it’s easy to see that we’re able to do this in a social distancing kind of way and most importantly raise money for the caddies out here. “In a six feet apart way,” he added, “drinks are on me.”

Mossel Bay Golf Club
“See the Sea from Every Tee” by Philip Basson. This happened as the result of the vision of a developer, Mr. Urs Windholz, who developed The Mossel Bay Golf Estate on the land surrounding the golf course. His vision included the rebuilding of the golf course and revamping of the club house to create a very upmarket, golfing facility. Further renovations were done to the club house during the course of 2019 and it now of a standard where it can easily hold its own against the best in the country.
M
ossel Bay Golf Club was founded in 1905 with the original golf course positioned at the old aerodrome. The land on which the present course was built was made available to the Club by the Mossel Bay Municipality in 1924. The course was designed by Bob Grimsdell and was built over a period of two years. During 1999/2000 the golf course was redesigned by Danie Obermeyer and rebuilt
The club is a people’s place with a strong membership base of 850 active golfers, they do in excess of 45 000 rounds annually which is no surprise as this is a must play course on the Garden Route. It is a challenging yet user friendly par 72 layout with excellent bent grass greens. Springbok and other wildlife are in abundance on the course. Mossel Bay Golf Club is currently home to Martin Vorster and Jordan Duminy, two up and coming golfers who have already represented South Africa on The International stage.

- Mossel Bay’s Favourite Son
orn in the small country village of Albertinia (50 klm outside of Mossel Bay) on 19 October 1982, Lodewicus Theodorus “Louis” Oosthuizen came from humble beginnings. Louis grew up on a farm in a tennis-playing family, his father and brother both having achieved at provincial level, but it was golf that ultimately won his heart. At the age of nine, Louis decided golf was his future, often spending his time at Mossel Bay Golf Club.

Excelling as an amateur player on Provincial and National levels, he caught the eye of Ernie Els who from 2000-2002 supported his early career through the Ernie Els and Fancourt Foundation. During his amateur career, on 12 December 2002, Louis shot a round of 57 (15 under par)

Then the world got turned upside down, Lockdown was enforced. Golf (and Life) ceased and here we are 6 weeks later. My days consist of catching up much needed school work. The academic requirements for US College are quite stringent so in a way it’s played into my hands.
Golf has taken a back seat, although I have a net set up in the garden, practice is not the same. I have turned more to my exercise programme, focusing on strengthening my core. My daily routine is as follows • 7km Run in the morning • School work • Practice hitting a few balls in the net • Core exercises in the later afternoon Stay safe and we will see you on the fairways soon.

GOOD GOVERNANCE
he results of 13th Edition of the John Collier Annual Survey indicate weak environmental compliance and good governance. This is a concern as it is limiting the sport of golf from fulfilling its full potential to benefit individuals and society by reducing the efficiency and effectiveness of the use of resources available to the sport. Over the years there are many examples of poor governance occurring within golf in South Africa, ranging from managerial breakdown of procedures such as theft of club monies at one extreme, through to missed opportunities due to inefficient management at the other end of the scale. Part 5 of the John Collier Annual Survey attempts to answer the question “Is poor governance compliance an indicator of deeper challenges facing amateur golf in South Africa?” One of the causes of governance failures in golf is the slow implementation of voluntary guidelines on good governance found for example in the King IV Code of Good Governance. In this regard the International Olympic Committee has recognised the importance of good governance. Through the recommendation of the Working Group on Good Governance of the International Olympic Committee it adopted the following principle that “All organisations belonging to the Olympic Movement to accept and comply with the Basic Universal Principles of Good Governance of the Olympic and Sports Movement (“PGG”).” A consequence of South Africa’s response to the Covid 19 pandemic through the Disaster Management Act is that many people are conducting virtual meetings. It is in this case, more than ever, that good governance principles should be adhered to and structures are put in place. As a start why not participate in the 2020 John Collier Survey for South African golf courses. ow did Tiger Woods decide to play a Bridgestone golf ball after Nike left the golf equipment business? GolfWRX writer John Wunder recently spoke to two key Bridgestone employees – Andrew Troutner, Test Site Operations Manager, R&D; and Adam Rehberg, Golf Ball Fitting, Events & Partnerships Supervisor – to get the scoop on Tiger and how Bridgestone built the current 2020 Tour B XS that Tiger has in his bag.

ANDREW TROUTNER: In the initial test at his home club (The Medalist) in Florida, we brought eight different balls that we felt would be in the ballpark of what he prefers.Tiger is as sensitive and discerning as anyone in history, and the specificity of his equipment is a testament to that.The prototypes we brought were unmarked, and we didn’t tell him what each one did nor did he want to know. It’s pure feel. ADAM REHBERG: Of the eight balls we brought, 99 percent of golfers wouldn’t see any difference between them, but this is TW. Some had core differences, dimple, cover etc. Only one of the balls we brought in that round of testing had our Reactiv cover. He immediately responded to the sound and how long the ball seemed to stay on the face.

For the second session, we brought four, and in the final, we had five that were all very close to each other. The B XS we all see now was the winner of that third session.

CAPTAIN IMMELMAN: I’M READY TO BUILD ON ERNIE’S LEGACY
A
Anyone growing up in South Africa knows the name Ernie Els. He’s obviously a legend in not just our country, but throughout the entire world! I have been particularly lucky to call that legend a close friend. I’ve spoken to Ernie regularly throughout the course of my life, quite frankly, since I first met him when I was six or seven years old.

Given that, for me to be able to follow in his footsteps as captain of the International Team at next year’s Presidents Cup is very, very special to me. Ernie has been a great friend and mentor to me throughout my life and someone I’ve been able to rely on for advice and guidance. To carry on the momentum he created as captain is something I don’t take for granted. I’m truly humbled by it. Though we were unable to deliver Ernie a win at Royal Melbourne last year, the legacy that he established in his time as captain is something I hope to build on moving forward. I can’t wait to continue adding to the platform he created for us in 2019, and I anticipate that once we put the whole team together that

A big shout out must go not only to those who have put in the long hours on the ground, but also to Golf RSA, CMASA & the PGA for making this possible. We are also positive that their hours of preparing proposals to the Minister of Sport with the correct social distancing & policies in place will certainly pay off. This has led us to ask the question what is essential on golf course maintenance:

Our mystery golfer was born on February 13th 1918 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and died on September 6th 2006. She was a founding member and then leading player on the LPGA Tour during the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. With 15 major title wins she has the all-time record for most major wins by a female golfer. She expressed an interest in football at an early age and at one point, played quarterback on a local team however her parents suggested that she try golf and at the age of 13 she took up the game. During World War II she was a lieutenant in the Marines. In 1963, she was voted the recipient of the Bob Jones Award, the highest honour given by the United States Golf Association in recognition of distinguished sportsmanship in golf. When the LPGA was officially started in 1950, she was one of the 13 founding members and held a leadership position as the association’s first president. She is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Answer on page 96
