2024 Annual Membership Drive Each January, Saddle Up! Magazine features horse association’s and trail riding groups for you to consider joining. These groups are volunteer based and only exist because of the hard work and dedication of its members. Membership dues are used in a variety of ways; facility rentals for horse shows, year-end awards, trail maintenance and equipment, and so much more. Please consider helping an association or trail riding group this year by becoming a member, volunteering or by sending a monetary donation. All are welcome, even if you don’t own a horse.

HORSE ASSOCIATION & TRAIL RIDERS NEWS Fort Custer Horse Friends Association https://www.fchfa.org/

FORT CUSTER HORSE FRIENDS Hello Trail Riders! 2024 is just a few days away with the prospect of new trails to explore in the Spring! But first, we would like to thank all the equestrians that made it to the Fort Custer Recreation Area to experience the new campground and beautiful trails in 2023. The Spring and Fall Equestrian camp outs were a success and well attended. Plans for 2024 camp outs are scheduled to be May 16-19 and September 19-22. These two special events are held at the Whitford Lake area where we have picket poles, an outhouse, grassy area to camp and a tree lined perimeter for picket lines. Riders can ride out in several directions from this area to access the 20 plus miles of trails that wander through woods, prairie grasses, around lakes and you can ride through 6 different creek crossings. Plan to put these dates on your calendar! FCHFA is working with the Park manager to have electricity in the campsites at the trailhead in the future. The underground conduit is going to be run to the trailhead in conjunction with the renovations being done in the people campground this year, continuing through 2024. We have installed several corrals with covers in our campsites for the comfort of the horses camping. We also built a garage storage building at the DNR office site to keep our growing inventory of tools, mowers, etc. that volunteers use for trail work and maintenance. Volunteers have free choice access to this building by stopping by the park office to ask for assistance. Anyone may use what we have if they have time to volunteer or see something on the trails that needs to be cleared for safety. There are instructions with each piece of equipment in the garage. Check out our website at www.fchfa.org to see the calendar for 2024 and the lovely pictures Judy takes of our special trails and events. Call Nancy at 269-967-3613 with any questions. Our next meeting will be held January 3 at the Scotts Comm-

unity Center at 4:30pm in Scotts, MI. All are welcome to attend. We invite you to join and support us with a membership, come to a ride/potluck or attend a work day to keep the trails in tip top shape for 2024. Thank you for everything so many of you do to participate in the work, the fun and the friendship this past year. We couldn't do it without YOU! See you on the trails!

MI FOXTROTTING HORSE ASSOC. Happy New Year! You have heard about this breed. Maybe you tried one out while you were on vacation or a friend let you try theirs. You liked the feel of the gait. And now you want to ride more comfortably. You are ready to switch breeds. How they move and make that gait is fascinating. How can I get one – a good one? Your internet search provides many possibilities. They come in so many colors and sizes. You mainly want to trail ride, camp, drive or possibly learn Dressage (which, in English, means training). Western Dressage is very popular and fun. The basic Dressage movements are good for any horse/rider pair to learn. For a majority of us gaiting and camping is a relaxing and fun hobby. We get it. A good way to connect with other MFT owners is by joining this association. Print the membership form online at: https:// www.michiganfoxtrottinghorse.com/ and send it in. Hundreds of people visit our website and learn about the breed and the special gait. Registering your horse with the MFTHBA provides official documentation of the horse's lineage, records ownership and makes the horse eligible for exclusive programs(per MFTHBA). Look for clinics or programs online this winter to keep your horse engaged and connected with you to keep their skills up JANUARY 2024 • C & C PUBLISHING, INC. ©2024 (24)

and to prevent boredom. Our association offers a year-long Versatility Program with opportunities for both horse (Not Under Saddle and Under Saddle categories) and rider to check off boxes on their bucket list of activities. Prizes are awarded quarterly, year-end awards are also provided. Sign up for the 2024 program now. The information about this is on our website. It will help ward off winter boredom and keep you involved all year. If you would like to find out more about this breed and associated activities, go to our website (michiganfoxtrotting horse.com) and mfthba.com. We invite you to join. We are the Michigan affiliate of the Missouri Fox Trotter Horse Breed Association (mfthba.com) based in Ava, MO. Our mission is to promote MFTs and to encourage the breeding and training of them, as well as to help their owners learn to enjoy their horses more, through educational clinics, trail rides and discussion. Paxton Rodriguez: “boy_with _rope” By Cindy Johnson | Email: cjquimby@gmail.com Followers of Tik Tok can sign on to ‘boy_with_rope’ to find 24year-old Paxton Rodriguez, spinning ropes, lighting two bull whips on fire and jumping through them to entertain audiences nationwide. Choosing a career path far from his degree in Physics (Adrian College graduate 2023), Paxton explained the advantage of using physics in his roping. “Physics helps determine my use of the ropes and whips. If the balance is not right for the big loop (also known as the Cowboy’s big loop), if the Honda (loose knot) is not balanced right, the rope will not spin out and can close up. It takes a bit of math to know how much centrifugal force is needed to spin the rope all the way around me. It's also a matter of trial and error, but the math makes it easier to know what I'm looking for.” Paxton added that through physics when watching the TV comedy, The Big Bang Theory, he was able to recognize and understand some of the equations that Leonard and Sheldon had on their white boards. Minoring in graphic design and art, Paxton designed his own logo which is posted on Tik Tok and features ball caps and other merchandise. His Tik Tok followers number 276,000 and counting. Paxton’s first performance as a trick roper was at the age of 15 in front of a live crowd at a high school rodeo sponsored by Tom's Western Store in Ovid, Michigan. Well known horse trainer and announcer Brandt Clark, “Seemed surprised to see me since he knew I came from a rodeo family and not from a performance background, said Paxton.” Coming from the fourth generation of rodeo competitors on his father’s side and the second generation on his mother’s line, Paxton grew up in the rodeo circuit. He said, “I've been able to go to a lot of cool places such as New York, South Carolina, and Georgia with my family.” Bitten by the travel bug, Paxton hopes to travel more with his performance career just beginning. On the circuit, his father met his mother, who is from Oklahoma. They both compete, although since 2012, his father now 53, does some team roping but mostly judges rodeo competitions. That same year, Paxton took his trick roping on the road. Leading up to that debut, Paxton said, “From the age of 6, I had always had a rope in my hand. I really began trick roping when I was 11 after I saw a trick roper at a pro rodeo. I played around at home, and my uncle showed me some basic tricks.” Learning to spin a 65-foot rope fast for a long period of time takes lots of practice for an average 5-minute performance. Being a perfectionist, Paxton said, “I get really pumped before a performance. I don't want to disappoint my audience or myself.” Specialty acts entertain the crowd at pre-shows, in between events, and at half time. His diligence has paid off as Paxton was voted by his peers as the MSRA (Mid-States Rodeo Association) Specialty Act of the Year for both 2022 and 2023 commemorated with the coveted buckle award. Paxton is also a member of the PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association), the IPRA (International Professional Rodeo Association), and the APRA (American Professional Rodeo Association). These memberships allow him to perform in more locations across the United States and even Canada. Working construction with his father, Paxton stays in shape and concentrates on keeping his body toned especially his shoulders as roping can take a toll on them. However, even with constant vigilance, Paxton was caught off guard at 16 when he began experiencing pain in his knee and hip. His mother noticed he was swinging his hip out like his father had when mounting his horse and suggested they see a doctor. The day after their visit, the doctor called them and Paxton was rushed to U of M for emergency surgery on his hip socket. Paxton was suffering from SCFE (Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis) which can occur in teens and pre-teens who are still growing. The ball at the head of the femur slips off the neck of the bone in a backward direction causing pain, stiffness, and instability. Three months on crutches, and Paxton was back in action. His condition was thought to be genetic, as his father has had both hips and a knee replaced. Continual observation has shown no signs of any more problems. Paxton still competes in team and calf roping, along with steer wrestling. That level of competition is not without risk. In 2022, Paxton suffered two concussions a month apart. The first was when he was thrown from his horse during warm up. He said, “I kind of pushed it off and got a pretty decent score that day.” The second concussion happened when he missed the steer. He said, “I took some time off from performing as that was a bad one.” Torn between his love of competition and of performing, Paxton explained, “I do like the rush and the excitement of competition, but I also am not a huge risk taker gambling my money competing. I like the guaranteed money from performances. As I get more involved in performing, I can see that part of my career getting more attention.” Paxton won the 2021 Calf Roping Competition in 2021. With a rodeo family, horses are essential. When Paxton was born, his grandfather (a Quarter Horse breeder) gifted Paxton with his own horse. Chino still rodeos today along with the other (33) HTTPS://SADDLEUPMAG.COM/

Paxton Rodriguez, continued 4 horses and are kept in line by Paxton's boss pony at home. Paxton said, “All our horses must be versatile and able to be used in different jobs.” Getting started performing, Paxton’s gigs were via referrals from people who knew him. After finishing college, Paxton is open for more performance work and is currently advertising through Facebook. (Paxton Roy Rodriguez Rodeo Entertainer). His skill and reputation led to a prime spot on a Yellowstone promotional video for season 4 posted on Blue Ray DVD on March 4, 2022. It can be accessed through his Tik Tok account featuring Paxton with his fire whips. The idea of working in commercials and movies is enticing for Paxton as his repertoire of tricks increases. In his age bracket (16-35) there are only about 10-15 professional ropers in the country. Paxton said, “I want to be one of the best out there. I feel like I've done it long enough that I'm pretty good, but I can always improve. There’s always room for learning from people that I admire.” Paxton has been encouraging his 17-year-old brother to become more active in roping. Paxton said, “Preston is naturally ambidextrous. He has gone on the road with me to southern Ohio and New York. He helps drive, set the stage, and helps with the ropes.” Maybe someday they will show together. Always looking for new tricks, Paxton wants to incorporate more horseback roping into his act. He uses Chino for some tricks, but someday he said, “I might look for a really, really pretty horse that would be flashy for the crowds.” He added, “He would still have to be able to compete in other rodeo events.” The rodeo season usually begins in the spring and runs into September, depending on the association. Paxton said, “In January, February, and March, performances will be set in stone. Hopefully, I will perform more in the West. I haven't crossed the Mississippi yet to perform.” Watch for Paxton Rodriguez on the show circuit in 2024.

The Love Goes On... A tribute to

Allison Kathleen Wheaton Strebig 1980-2023 Written by Cindy Johnson

The horse world is a special place. To experience loss is inevitable and though aware, it is kindly never expected. To lose someone who truly makes a difference in the lives of animals and people is crushingly hard. As time passes, the acute pain will ease, slowly replaced by fond memories and “remember when Allison did this or said this...” To remember is to love. A true horse person wants the legacy to go on through the care, the learning, and by treasuring her dreams with those she loved. Summit Equestrian Center will remain open in honor of Allison Wheaton.

Horse Stall Planning Tips Written by Lisa Kiley with tips from Yash Balasaria of American Stalls | https://americanstalls.com/ American Stalls is one of the world's premiere stall manufacturers. If you have been in the industry long enough, chances are that you have been in a barn that utilizes some of their products, from gorgeous European style stall fronts to safe portable stalls that line the aisles at your favorite event venue. American Stalls makes everything from the basic components to the finishing touches to make a barn safe and user friendly for horse and human alike. I got the chance to talk with Yash Balasaria who is the CEO of American Stalls and second generation in stall production which started back in 2005. The company's roots in steel manufacturing go back to the late 1990's, bringing decades of experience using sound construction techniques to build some of the best stalls on the market. I asked Balasaria to describe some tips that he would recommend for someone starting out the planning process of a stall project. He advised that while no two barns are the same there are some things that everyone should consider when starting to make plans for their facility. First, it is important to think about the key functions of the barn and what the daily flow of work in the barn will be. This can be the difference between making chores an easy experience or truly a chore. Balasaria advised that when his team works on a project, they ask the barn owners to take the time to really think through the layout and flow in the barn, they provide resources that can be used to work through different options to make the facility uniquely their own. Exploring these options helps the client get what they really want and avoid things that could be a pain point down the road. In addition to the interior flow of the barn, it's also important to look at the geography and topography of the land in general for more insight on how a project should be laid out. Balasaria stressed the importance of ventilation and sunlight in the barn which add to the overall health and safety of the barn. He suggested adding windows that can be opened providing natural light and better air quality for the horses. Where appropriate, he encouraged using glass windows as a great option for barns. Grill work and mesh on stall fronts and gates can also allow for more ventilation with the added benefit of being able to see the whole horse when walking through the barn, which can make it easier to spot any issues that need to be addressed. Adding grillwork on the sides of the stall not only increases airflow but depending on how the horses in the barn get along, can create opportunities for socialization providing enrichment of the horses day-to-day.

saver. Balasaria added that having strong reliable latches and high-quality hardware in the barn can make a dramatic difference in the ease of moving through the barn space. Being able to trust in the construction of the product when you need it the most is important whether you are just looking to make chores run along smoothly or need to make fast moves in the case of an emergency. Safety in construction is also on the top of Balasaria's list when it comes to materials selection. He advised that when sizing up products for your facility, take the time to educate yourself about the differences in materials construction. He urges potential customers to ask about how the materials are fabricated. Is the steel galvanized? Is there a powder coat to help protect against rust? How are the welds done? He explained that interior welds and seamless welds provide additional strength and durability vs. components that may be tack welded and are prone to breakage over time or under stress. He also urged people to invest in items that have been welded vs. components that are bolted together. Any area that is bolted vs. welded will have weaker points and don't hold up as well over time. Safety also comes into play when thinking about bar spacing, making sure that bars are close enough together to prevent a horse from getting a hoof caught up is very important. Balasaria provided some tips for setting up a barn on a budget. He advised that going through the process of really planning out the space can help prevent regrets further down the line which can result in costly renovations. Similarly, investing in the best quality materials can cost more up-front but will provide longterm durability that will save money over time. He also urged the budget conscious customers who are handy to consider kits that require some DIY. Putting in some of the construction work on your own is a great way to save money vs. buying totally

Dutch doors on the exterior of the stall are something else that Balasaria strongly recommends. The doors not only add light and air flow but provide additional options for egress. This is beneficial not only for easy pasture turnout, but also in the case of fire. In critical times sliding doors can often be easier to manage than swinging doors. While traditionally Dutch doors often swing out, American Stalls offers a sliding Dutch door option which can not only be easier to open but is also a space JANUARY 2024 • C & C PUBLISHING, INC. ©2024

Horse Stall Planning Tips, cont. prefabricated fronts and partitions. Want to add a wow factor to your barn? Balasaria suggested investing in beautiful stall doors which can really create that show stopping look without having to replace the whole stall front. Updating the lighting and fixtures in the barn is a great way to highlight the facilities features as well as add safety. Hardware is another great way to to update the look of your barn and add that luxury feel. In closing Balasaria stressed the importance of working with a company that you can trust. He shared that all the members of his team are horse people and have many years of horse experience in different facets of the industry. This experience can be invaluable when working through a project because they have the background to understand the specific needs of each customer and be able to offer thoughtful insights on every project from a four-stall home barn to a 1,500 stall event facility. Having a good relationship with the company you are working with is key to creating the barn of your dreams.
