Iam very excited to introduce you to my new sofa called the Salthrop Sofa. It’s based on a sofa my Dad designed over 40 years ago. I have updated it with a more contemporary look and made the arms a bit lower and added our signature bow ties to the loose cover to make them really easy to change over for cleaning. It has very generous proportions with a wonderfully deep seat and comes with five scatter cushions, three large and two standard sizes. The seat cushions are 70% duck feather and 30% down. As with all our sofas, you can choose different seat cushion specifications, if you prefer foam for instance. We can cover them in any of our fabrics and in your own fabric too. ello, I am absolutely thrilled with my first range of bespoke sofas and being able to share their beautiful comfiness with you all.

I set out to create something really different - a totally gorgeous sofa that has the ability to totally transform any room with it’s joyfulness.

My sofas are bespoke, that means each one is made to your own specificantions and is unique to you. Every sofa is hand made in Derbyshire by a team who used to make sofas for my Dad for many many years, so they feel like family. These highly skilled craftspeople are dedicated to producing truly exceptional quality products.

As a result, there is only ever going to be a limited amount of my sofas available every year.

Our sofas are made the traditional way. We use all natural fibres, solid European birch hardwood frames and fully sprung steel seats.

A sofa is often one of the largest pieces in your living room and to me they provide the most wonderful opportunity for colour and pattern and creates and anchor within the room.

I’ve added these gorgeous bows at the back of the sofa which make changing the covers super easy and have the added benefit of looking lovely too.

NSPIRED BY MOTHER NATURE

Mother Nature inspires me every single day with her complete genius in all that she creates for us to feel, see, hear, touch and of course, smell too. Just one glance at these truly extraordinary tulips says it all to me.

When I feel like a moment to completely unwind and put my feet up and read a book, or chat with a loved one or watch my favourite movie, there’s nothing more luxurious in my mind than being really, really comfortable, nestled deep into one of my sofas. And yes, Frank, my adorable Whippet is invariably there with me these days, keeping me warm and cosy.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SOFA

Our wonderful team put a great deal of love and care into making each one of our sofas. So here are some guidelines to help you look after them. The first thing to remember is that natural materials perform very differently from the man-made foam fillings that are in most of the sofas you’ll find today.

Let’s start with the cushions, each one is filled by hand with European Duck Feather. When they are first filled, the feathers are freshly pressed together and will feel quite firm initially. Over the course of the first few days and weeks, they will become softer and softer, especially if you take care to plump them in a similar way you would plump a feather pillow. The plumping moves the feathers around, pushing fresh air in between them which makes them even more comfy. Feather cushions that aren’t plumped tend to become lumpy and uncomfortable, so it’s well worth doing.

emember that sunlight is a very powerful natural bleaching agent. All our fabrics have some in-built resistance to sunlight, but it is almost impossible to create any material that doesn’t fade if left in full sunlight for extended periods of time. Please bear this in mind when positioning your sofa if you are worried about it fading. I actually quite like the look of slightly faded fabrics, they feel more lived in to me.

There’s something so incredibly calming about a room with white sofas. I love the serenity of them so much that they seem to make me relax before I have even sat in them. These are covered in 100% Linen from Designers Guild and the colour is Chalk. It’s machine washable which is perfect for me with the dogs jumping all over them constantly! As with any busy family home, my sofas get a lot of use, especially it seems, from one of my many dogs who love to spend lazy afternoons lying all over them. They run in from outside, often with very muddy paws and make the leap onto the sofas without a care in the world. All our covers are fully removable and depending on their fabric type, can be either washed or dry cleaned. I find though, that most muddy marks, if allowed to dry first, will come off with a soft brush or a light vacuum.

Y SOFA MAKING HERITAGE

My heritage with sofa making begins with my Dad who started his journey to creating Habitat with a sofa making business based intially in London in the late 1950s. By the time I was born in the mid 1960s, he was employing many hundreds of craftsmen making sofas from his workshops in Norfolk. As the business grew, he helped many of his employees to set up their own businesses and supply Habitat and later The Conran Shop. Dad was passionate about how things were made and completely loved his favourite sofas and I am following in his footsteps.

I learnt from a very young age how a really good sofa is made and how they can literally last a lifetime if they are made properly, so it feels wonderful to be producing sofas of such a high quality and from within the UK as well.

Another thing that high quality sofas traditionally had was springs in the base, and the best sofas still use these springs, so ours naturally have them too. They make a real difference to how comfortable your sofa is but also, they ensure your sofa has a much longer lifespan.

My love of stripes has been with me from childhood to now. My Mum and Dad used stripes brilliantly at our home in Berkshire and later too, when they had a house in France. They had super wide stripes on bedspreads and decking stripes on bedlinen and cushions too. They’d mix them up with neutrals and textures and the result was always so joyful and refreshing. To me, this grey stripe is a perfect way to bring together the playfulness of a stripe within a more neutral colour palette. I absolutely love it!

Stripes are very refreshing and can bring a real sense of fun to a room. This lovely fabric is woven in the UK by a company that first started supplying fabric to my family over 40 years ago.

There’s something very reassuringlly confident about a red and white stripe and this one really seems to know what enjoying life is all about! I love the red trim detailing as well on the edge of the box cushions . Our box edge cushions are available in all our sofa sizes.

SITTING PRETTY

The moment we moved this wonderful red and white striped sofa into my entrance hall the effect was quite amazing. It honestly felt like it totally belonged there and seemed immediately at home in its surroundings.

Here’s our glorious Dandelion stripe covering a 3.5 seater sofa with knife-edge cushions and cream piping. As you can see, the 3.5 seater features three seat and back cushions. I absolutely love the look and feel of this sofa. it’s so wonderfully generous and of course, extremely comfy too. The only challenge for me at the moment is finding a space in between the four legged members of the family!

COMFORTABLE COSY CUSHIONS

All our cushions come filled with European Duck Feather to provide long lasting comfort for you. If you have a need for a particular type of cushion that is different from our standard range, then please do speak to us. We can make our cushions to all approved specifications, so do let us know if you’d like something specially made for you.

Sofas can become the very heart of your home, particularly when they are super comfy. In my house, it’s always about accommodating a crowd, especially when family and friends arrive with even more dogs!

How totally fabulous is this! My gorgeous new loveseat here, is covered with a magnificent fabric called Magnolia, designed by the textile designer, William Turner in 1913 he was inspired by fabric designs of the 18th century, (my favourite period). It’s from the Baker Originals collection by our brilliant friends at GP & J Baker. I just love how this design still feels so fresh, vibrant and completely joyful.

Finding a good looking coffee table that’s really elegant and also very practical is quite tricky in my experience which is why I’ve designed these. They can be made to practically any size you like and can be covered in any suitable upholstery fabric.

We have two standard sizes, 192cm x 92cm and 182cm x 82cm. All the covers are loose covers and are extremely easy to change. Each piece is made by hand in Derbyshire by the same craftspeople who make our sofas including a very talented woodturner who individually carves these beautiful American Black Walnut legs. We are also very happy to make these legs in any timber of your choice, including English Oak, Maple and Sycamore. We advise not to sit or stand on the tables as they are not designed to hold excessive weight. Coffee table books and objects are perfectly acceptable however.

OUR WORKSHOP

All of our sofas are lovingly made by hand in Derbyshire from natural materials.The foundation of any good sofa begins with the frame. Our frames are made from sustainably sourced Birch hardwood which comes from forests in Finland.

The Birch is prepared in our frame making workshop and each joint is put together with wooden dowels, screws and glue. The resulting finished frame is extremely strong and forms a very solid basis from which to commence the upholstery process.

We make our sofas in a very traditional way. Sofas made 100 years ago or so were made with steel springs in the base. Ours follow this tradition and each sofa has a fully sprung base made with specially produced sprung steel. The combination of these springs is the equivalent of having a high quality mattress in the bottom of your sofa and significantly adds to both the comfort and the overall durability and longevity of use.

Once the spring unit has been assembled into the frame, the upholstery process begins. We start by covering the springs with a layer of natural jute. On top of the jute we then place a 25 mm thick layer of rubberised natural fibres. On top of these fibres, we then place a felted cotton wadding layer which in turn is covered by a wool based interliner for fire retardancy. This is then finished with a cotton lining which forms the final layer for your sofa and can be seen when you take off your fabric covers for cleaning.

The traditional nature of the materials that are used in Sophie Conran sofas is such that if you were to open up a sofa that was made around 100 years ago and compare the materials, you would find them to be almost identical in every way.

Our cushions are hand made in Derbyshire with European Duck feathers to provide you with a truly wonderful level of comfort. As with all brand new feather cushions, when they first arrive at your home, they will feel quite firm in comparison to how they will soon become within the first few weeks of use. This change in how they feel is aided by regularly plumping them so that air is able to circulate in between the feathers. It is the combination of air in between feathers that makes a feather based cushion comfortable. You will find that if you take care of your cushions with regular plumping to ensure that there is a good amount of air within them, that they will provide you with an extremely comfortable sofa for many years.
