HOMES & DESIGN

Discover Boating offers these suggestions when considering the purchase of a PFC: • Determine the number of passengers you want to carry; • Compare different models – rec-light, recreation, touring/luxury, performance, and stand-up; • Decide if you’d like to buy new or preowned; • Set your budget and explore financing options; • Start shopping – find out where to buy; • Research personal watercraft values and consult pricing guides; and

Personal watercrafts offer nimble handling and amazing performance in a package that’s affordable and easy to own. Some could argue that no boating option offers more value – or bang for the buck – than a personal watercraft. In much the same way Kleenex has became synonymous with facial tissue, a PWC is often referred to as a Jet Ski, WaveRunner or SeaDoo, which are all known name brands of personal watercraft manufacturers including Kawasaki, Yamaha and BRP, sequentially. Buying the best PWC for your needs, similar to buying any boat, involves making a few important choices.

Personal watercrafts offer excitement and fun on the lake. When purchasing a PWC, consider the size and amenities you desire and do some research on the types available.

• Personal watercraft in a pinch but two adults and a child is really more realistic. Some of the smaller rec-lightcategory models, and some highperformance PWC, are rated for two passengers. A three-passenger model offers seat room and buoyancy to comfortably carry two adults for a long cruise. That three-passenger rating is also a requirement when using a PWC to tow tubers or wake boarders in most states.

Rec-light models

These most-affordable PWC models can carry two adults (or two adults and a child), have a 60 to 100 HP engine, and can reach a top speed of about 45 MPH. They don’t really have enough power to tow a tube or boarder, and often don’t have some of the convenience features found on larger models. They also have a smaller and lighter hull that works fine in smooth water but can deliver a rougher ride when conditions get choppy.

Recreation models

The mid-rage offered by PWC

manufacturers, these models are larger and faster than the rec-light models, and can come with more features. Engine options may range from about 120 to 180 HP, good for a top speed of 50 to 60 MPH. Features offered on Recreation models include electronic reverse control, speed control options, performance options (such as a fuel-saving ECO mode), security systems, and optional audio systems. Some models can be set up for long-range cruising with a bolstered seat, or for towing with a tow-line pylon.

Luxury/touring models

These feature-laden models offer the most-powerful engines, with more than 300 HP available and a top speed exceeding 65 MPH. The large hull – over 11 feet long – is designed to offer a comfortable and stable ride in most water conditions. They also offer more storage and fuel capacity than the Recreation models. screen display, a security system, adjustable handlebar angle are often standard equipment. There are models designed specifically for touring, fishing and tow sports.

Serving All of Walworth County

Designed for experienced riders looking for no-compromise performance inspired by competition, a Performance PWC is often the quickest and fastest boat on any lake. The hull and deck is often molded from special lightweight material, the jet pump is enhanced with special components, and the highest horsepower engine is placed under the seat. The result is not just top speed approaching 70 MPH, but eye-popping acceleration and razor-sharp handling. These are not machines intended for beginning riders.

Stand-up models

Safety measures such as the proper personal floatation device are important when operating a personal watercraft. A Type III PFD must be worn when riding a PWC.

This is where the sport began – a narrow hull with a handlebar control mounted on a moveable pole. Riding a stand-up PWC requires some athletic ability and a lot of practice, but it’s that challenge that many riders find

rewarding and entertaining. Currently the Kawasaki Jet Ski SX-R is the only Stand-Up model available for recreational riding. The Yamaha SuperJet is sold only for closed-course competition. Preowned models are an option for those who want to give a stand-up model a try.

Gear and accessories

Most PWC owners have a trailer to transport the craft, even if it’s kept on the water during the riding season. A trailer will be needed to transport the craft for service and off-season storage. A Type III personal floatation device must be worn when riding a PWC. Neoprene shorts or PWC trunks with a neoprene liner provide the PWC rider and passengers with comfort and protection. A PWC wet suit can be worn for riding in cold water or for extending the riding season. Closed-toe boat shoes, water shoes or PWC riding booties provide better traction and protection than bare feet or flipflops. For more information, visit discoverboating.com.

Boating is good for your health and mind Water is healing In October 2019, researchers at the University of Exeter Medical School in the United Kingdom published a study showing that people who live near the ocean are 22 percent less likely to report depression and anxiety symptoms than people who stay inland. The beneficial effects of “blue health” – interacting with bodies of water – were especially high among lower-income households. The British study followed a Canadian study in 2018 showing that people living closer to the water lowered their risk of mortality by as much as 17 percent. The “protective effects” of being near bodies of water were especially noteworthy among women and older adults. In fact, just the sounds of bodies of water can help to reduce stress, according to a 2013 study. Get yourself within earshot of a lake, river or ocean, and you can immediately feel better.

Igniting your ‘blue mind’

The power of sunlight In late-April, during the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, the Department of Homeland Security also released a study related to the life cycle of the virus on non-living surfaces. The study detailed the anticipated times the virus can survive on surfaces given variations in temperature, humidity, and exposure to sunlight. In the end, the results concluded that the virus would die in about two minutes at a temperature above 70 degrees Fahrenheit with relative humidity at 80% and direct exposure to sunlight, which is good news for boaters. Particularly those interested in alternatives to boat ownership like boat rentals, peer-to-peer boat sharing, and boat clubs, this type of science shows that any concerns about exposure from prior renters in addition to new cleaning guidelines boat clubs and rentals are following should be minimal. The science is clear – boating is good for your health and mind. Get out there, as soon and as often as you can. The water, and reduced stress, are awaiting you.

AUGUST 2020

Wallace J. Nichols, the author of Blue Mind, knows all of this information well. His bestselling book looks at the scientific reasons why being in, on or under the water can make us happier and healthier. “Simply the mere sight and sound of water promotes wellness by lowering cortisol, increasing serotonin, and inducing relaxation,” Nichols said.

In fact, he says, when it comes to reducing stress, being on a boat can be considered a type of medicine. “Blue mind is when we disconnect and logout,” Nichols continued. “We move away from the screens and we get out on the water, and leave all of that technology and information behind. We give our brains a break—and our brains love that.”

As the coronavirus pandemic continued to weigh on the world, the former director of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention had a simple message for Americans: get outside. “Enjoy nature,” Tom Frieden said. “It’s good for us, and it has very low risk of spreading the virus.” Everyone from the former Food and Drug Administration commissioner to health experts from Harvard University echoed Frieden’s comment, saying research continues to show that outdoor activities – including boating – are a much better way of staying safe from the virus than any type of indoor activity. The research is why boat ramps and marinas were among the first public spaces and businesses to reopen following the initial COVID-19 shutdowns. Even in hardest-hit states in the Northeast, officials determined that getting out on a boat could be done safely while other recreations like golf remained off-limits. “Boating or paddling can provide a refreshing outdoor escape during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Peter Francis, boating division director for the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Being able to go boating during the pandemic – or at any time, really – is great news, because studies also show that being on or near the water is a boon for psychological health. And who among us couldn’t use a mood booster now and again?

5 social distancing activities to do on a boat Regardless of whether you’ve been boating for years, or this is your first time splashing into this beloved form of outdoor recreation, boating can be your new favorite, go-to social distancing activity. Discover Boating offers five ways to turn boating into a safe adventure this summer:

Family first Follow state and federal guidelines by going out only with members of your immediate household. If you have boating buddies in your area, there’s no issue hailing them on the radio and cruising over to where they are. Just don’t raft up together, or beach your boats next to each other. Instead, as you would on land, keep at least six feet apart.

Boating can be the perfect socially distant activity.

Embrace the “social” in social distancing If you’ve already been boating for a few years, you know how friendly everyone is out on the water. Passing boaters wave hello, with regularity. Take the initiative to initiate a quick hi to each of your fellow boaters. It will do wonders for your mindset. Plus, if you have kids, make a game of it, asking them to count how many people wave back. Turn a cruise into a vacation on-demand Who needs a hotel when your boat has a cabin with a berth? A boat

can be the ultimate social-distancing staycation. Anchoring in a quiet cove can feel like you’re miles away from home, even if you’re relatively close by. Just make sure you have 360-degree swing room on your anchor. That’s proper practice even outside of a pandemic.

Go swimming, get active Who doesn’t love jumping off the swim platform into the water? The good news is, the Centers for Disease Control says there’s no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the water. Regardless, heed local and state restrictions on what waters are open to swimmers. Watersports are also a great form of exercise, so you can get moving by diving into wakesurfing, wakeboarding, waterskiing or even tubing. No boat? No problem If you haven’t yet purchased a boat, you’re not out of luck. You can rent, or opt for boat sharing (a.k.a. peer-to-peer rental). Alternately, you can join a boat club. While rental operators and boat clubs did see business interruptions during the height of the pandemic, many have since reopened. Double check which ones near you are taking customers, and what their safety policies are. Furthermore, consult Discover Boating’s guide to boat rentals and clubs during COVID-19 at discoverboating.com.

Where the water meets the land Lake Lawn offers activities that take advantage of its winning location

By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

After months of self isolation, as we tried to protect ourselves and our families from the COVID-19 pandemic, many families are looking to enjoy some outdoor summer activities. Most are ready to get out and enjoy the beauty of summer as restrictions are being loosened. Since foreign travel is mostly banned and concerns about travel within the United States are causing more residents to cancel trips, many people are considering a vacation closer home. When looking for a romantic getaway weekend or a full week or more of family fun, an attractive option for many in the southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois is a visit to Lake Lawn Resort on the shores of Delavan Lake in nearby Delavan. With more than two miles of shoreline, this resort, which first opened over 140 years ago, has been welcoming visitors to enjoy a variety of activities both indoors and out. With plenty of amenities available, there is sure to be enough activity for everyone in your group. And if quiet and relaxing time is what is

Safety procedures will be evident from the time you check in. Hand sanitizer stations are visible when first entering the building. Markings are placed at 6-foot intervals to remind visitors to remain physically distant. Face masks are required when visiting indoor establishments with common areas in Wisconsin. While one person from the group is checking in, space for the rest of the party is available away from the check-in desk. The employees are checked for elevated temperature and other symptoms of illness before they are allowed to work. Masks are provided. Lake Lawn has also used the time to renovate the banquet and meeting spaces, and the lake house. They have replaced the furniture with lighter items and have added new carpets also in lighter beach colors. Walls have been painted to reflect more lakeside colors similar to what is seen in the resort’s Calladora Spa. It’s peaceful and relaxing as a waterfront space should be.

Lawn visitors, is the new Lake Lawn Queen. This 76-foot, two-level cruise boat holds up to 125 visitors and can be taken on a narrated tour of Delavan Lake. The narrator will point out the historical landmarks on the lake, including the five Frank Lloyd Wright designed homes along the waterfront. Taking a cruise on the lakefront will allow visitors to relax, and enjoy the lake breezes and view the beauty of the water. According to Sekeres, the boat was originally in Rhinelander. It was brought here after it was purchased about a year ago. After a major renovation including a new motor, new decks and a new pilothouse, it was deemed that the Lake Queen was ready for the visitors to Lake Lawn Resort. For a special view of the lake, take the Sunset Tour. In addition to lake tours, the boat can be chartered for wedding rehearsal dinners with the food prepared by the Lake Lawn Resort staff. Private parties for any occasion may also be chartered on the boat. Summertime is the time for all water activities and a stop at the marina on the east end of the resort property is just the spot to find the water vessel that suits your needs. If you enjoy the fast ride of a speedboat or want to enjoy waterskiing or tubing, the marina staff will find the boat for you. Pontoon boats are popular with families who can enjoy a leisurely ride on the lake or to do a little tubing off the back. Additionally they also rent wave runners, paddleboards, kayaks, and paddleboats. Enjoy an active time on the water or a more laid back experience. Let the motorboats do
