Speranza Theatre Company Unveiling Liberty & The Greenhouse Ensemble The Proposal by Anton Chekhov Friday, September 13, 8:00 p.m. Unveiling Liberty – It’s 1886 and ten-year-old Isabelle is enamored with the enormous statue about to be unveiled in NY harbor. Her father and brother will attend the dedication, and Isabelle doesn’t understand why, as a girl, she’s not allowed to go. Meanwhile, the fact that a woman has been chosen to represent liberty has drawn the attention of the Woman’s Suffrage Association. This play explores the state of women’s rights at the time of the birth of an iconic landmark (Family Friendly). In his famous musical fairytale, Prokofiev cleverly matches each character to an instrument and a musical theme so listeners can imagine the exciting tale as it unfolds. This special arrangement of Prokofiev’s classic tale features the instruments of the woodwind family, combining the same great imagery with a focus on the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and French horn. Svetlana and Her Night at the Movies Saturday, October 26, 8:00 p.m. Margaret Williams Theatre Tickets $30 Svetlana is “Astrud Gilberto via Moscow”, a Russian-born critically acclaimed American jazz vocalist. Her new record and concert program, Night at the Movies is Svetlana’s love affair with movies, and dreaming. The concert adapts Oscar-winning Songs from 1930s to today, taking listeners on a carnival of sound, from sultry introspective torch jazz vocals to a rowdy New Orleans inspired dance party. Carrying over all the romance, passion and beautiful familiar melodies, while discovering unexpected gems and adding a new twist and high energy – the band is fronted by Svetlana’s captivating vocals and stage presence. Listeners will find themselves nodding along to familiar tunes - while also being thrilled by the twists, turns, and unexpected improvisational aspects of Svetlana’s exciting virtuoso band of young jazz lions. NJCU in association with Cranford Dramatic Club presents CHESS THE MUSICAL in concert. With Music by Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus of the pop group ABBA, the story of CHESS involves a politically driven, Cold War era Chess Tournament between two grandmasters from America and the USSR, and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. Featuring diverse works by seventeen artists who are part of the group, Neo-Latino, this exhibition reveals how artists interpret and express the power that a specific location and/or the objects found there, have on their artistic ideas and practice. Curated by Dr. Virginia Fabbri Butera, the Director of the Therese A. Maloney Art Gallery at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Morristown, NJ, the exhibition was first presented earlier in May at The Gallery Space in Rahway, NJ. Participating artists are: Luis Stephenberg Alers, Nelson Alvarez, Josephine Barreiro (BFA alum), Hugo Xavier Bastidas (NJCU art professor), Olga Mercedes Bautista (MA alum), Monica S. Camin, Angélica Muñoz Castaño, Christie Devereux, Ricardo Fonseca (MFA alum), Alexis Mendosa, Elizabeth Jiménez Montelongo, Lisette Morel, George Rivera, José Rodeiro (NJCU retired professor), Nicola Stewart, Sergio G. Villamizar (NJCU staff) and Raúl Villarreal (MFA alum).
As a sequel to the 2014 Jerseyscapes exhibition held at NJCU, this exhibition revisits the theme of New Jersey landscapes and people-scapes through varied artistic media. Less obvious and off-mainstream perspectives on New Jersey and its people are explored through works in multimedia. It will feature select works by members of Pro Arts, a professional membership community dedicated to advancing and promoting visual arts and their work, founded in Jersey City in 1994. Exhibiting artists will include Amy Becker, Peter Delman, Michael Endy, Ed Fausty, Eileen Ferara, Allan Gorman, and Kerry Kolenut, among others.

Mapping Life October 17 – November 26 RECEPTION: October 17, 5:00 –8:00 p.m. ARTIST TALK: TBA Harold B. Lemmerman Gallery In conjunction with Map Everywhere in the Visual Arts Gallery, Mapping Life sheds light onto contemporary artists’ varied use of cartographic methods and forms in translating people’s lives, actions, and memories into their work. The work ranges from painting, sculpture, photography, video, and performance. Refracting the Sublime Rita Jimenez MFA Exhibition December 3 – 16 RECEPTION: December 3, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Visual Arts Gallery Refracting The Sublime showcases Rita Jimenez’s thesis work of immersive light and video installations. Her work distorts and alters spaces using color projection light in motion. Through this process, the artist investigates the notion of the sublime— something so grand and ethereal which would be almost impossible to document.

PERIPHERY Kirk Maynard MFA Exhibition December 3 – 16 RECEPTION: December 3, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Harold B. Lemmerman Gallery PERIPHERY is an exhibition of work by Kirk Maynard which deals with the effect of stereotypes on body language. Using himself as the subject, Kirk presents oil pastel drawings which use space and body language to express issues of marginalization and stereotype threat.

JUDITH FARRIS Professional Performance without Fear Thursday, November 14 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. Margaret Williams Theatre Registration: $50; Students and Seniors $30 This course is designed to raise the bar on performance skills. Students will delve into specific musical pieces with techniques to strengthen the depth of their delivery. A protégé of the late Keith Davis, Judith Farris is the teacher of many of New York’s finest singers. As a singer, Farris’ primary performance genre was opera. In addition to having had a successful career in Europe, she has enjoyed appearances with the Santa Fe Opera, the Opera Theater of St. Louis, the Washington Opera and the Chicago Opera Theater, and performances at Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center. Farris has appeared with the St. Louis Symphony, National Symphony, the American Symphony, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic and the National Symphony in Washington, D.C. She has appeared and recorded with the New York Philharmonic and has sung as a featured soloist with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Farris has been a frequent guest with New York Musical Sacra and has sung under the baton of master conductors such as Leonard Slatkin. Her many awards include the Marian Anderson Scholarship, the National Arts Club of New York City Contraltos, The Minna Kauffman Rudd Award from the Metropolitan Opera, The Lucrezia Bori Award, and the Metropolitan Opera Katherine Long Grant Award.

DONNA CONNOLLY Area Coordinator of Vocal Studies Vocal Health: Helping singers explore the present and experience the self with greater efficiency Tuesday, February 11, 2020 4:30 – 7:30 p.m. Margaret Williams Theatre Registration: $50; Students and Seniors $25 This class is designed to help each singer body map efficiently, experience core breathing and maximize their sound through exploration of resonance. Soprano, Donna Zapola-Connolly, has garnered acclaim in her international career from locales as diverse as Bangkok, Cairo, Manila, Hong Kong and Korea, as well as the major opera and concert houses in New York City and around the US. Appearing with Opera Theatre of St. Louis’ acclaimed production of Il Viaggio a Reims, she has appeared as Violetta in La Traviata in Manila, Micaela in Carmen in Cairo, Agnese in Opera Orchestra of New York’s concert of Bellini’s Beatrice di Tenda conducted by Eve Queler, and under the direction of Leonard Slatkin with the St. Louis Symphony in Janácek’s Danube at Avery Fischer Hall in New York’s Lincoln Center. She toured the US as Violetta in La Traviata with the New York City National Company and the Western Opera Theater touring company from San Francisco Opera. Dr. Connolly has toured and performed extensively in the Middle and Far Eastern countries. Among many awards, she recently was selected for the distinguished Voice Internship at Mount Sinai’s Grabscheid Voice Center in New York City, under the leadership of Dr. Peak Woo.

Dalio’s award winning stage credits include: Gaston and Beast, in the Broadway National Tour and German Permiere’s of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Broadway National Tour of Les Miserables (Marius), International Company of Miss Saigon (Chris) Regional leading roles in Songs for a New World, South Pacific, Romance Romance, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change, Aida, And the World Goes Round, Miss Saigon, the American Premiere of Metropolis, West Side Story, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Pippin, South Pacific, Noises Off, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Most recently, Marc was seen as Father in the critically acclaimed Children of Eden with the New Jersey City University. Marc’s voice can be heard on the Original German Cast Recording of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast as Gaston, Imagination Productions’ Godspell as Judas, as well as Send Me an Angel by DJ Cosmos/ Mythos, Angel Falls by Ayla, Always Running by the Euphonics and A Wish for Christmas, a CD benefiting the Make a Wish Foundation. How Many Lives? Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion Thursday, September 12, 7:00 p.m. screening and 8:00 p.m. discussion with Director Duda Penteado and additional distinguished guests Margaret Williams Theatre $15 general / $5 students and seniors The documentary explores the views and impacts of gun violence through the eyes of 25 young student artists of Jersey City, NJ. In creating a 180-foot long mural titled “How Many Lives?” we enter into their innermost world of emotion and thoughts, about the human toll taken by the gun culture that thrives in the United States of America. Film Produced by Unshakeable Productions.
In a playful and humorous manner, NJSO’s version of Kipling’s The Jungle Book—featuring a string ensemble—introduces young audiences to classical master works and to various styles of music. Narration of the story alternates with brief musical interludes, and puppets and toy animals bring this program to vivid life!
