MARIAM BAHAWDORY MBA graduate. Entrepreneur. NJCU Build Your Dream winner.

“I was going to school for my MBA when I had an idea for a Muslim dating app. I started pitching to investors – and

they loved the idea. So I went ahead with it. I was creating

my business model and business plan literally while I was in

class learning how. The whole time I was doing my MBA I was building a business of my own. It was a long journey. But now we’re ready to launch.”

You know what’s not easy? Making something from nothing. Dealing with unknown unknowns.

There’s nothing easy about it. That’s why it’s worth doing. That’s why it’s calling your name.

The robot is a NAO, and used by NJCU’s Educational Technology Department. With a diminutive stature, rounded features and childlike voice designed to engage, the robot is gaining traction as a teaching tool. And while programming the robot points to its use in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education, some research suggests humanoid robots could actually be used to improve literacy.

the future is Nao.

n i v a S TERRY L. KAMPS, PH.D. Biology professor. Plant geneticist. Student advocate.

“You plant an orange seed and it can take 10 years to get a fruit. I’m working on a project looking at the genes that

regulate flowering time. If we can speed up that process we

can reduce 10 years down to 2 or 3. That’s a significant impact. I always try to get people to understand that the science and

research translates over to different areas. We’ve had students

who go through our labs go on to medical school – it’s learning how to do the science that’s the critical thing.”

You’ll be tested. You’ll be questioned. And you’ll be challenged. Because it’s not about taking things for granted. Or letting enough be enough. It’s about that search, that endless search for understanding. One thing’s for sure. The view’s pretty good from the shoulders of giants.

Nursing graduate. Student nonprofit co-founder. Aspiring coronary ICU nurse.

“I want to go to the coronary ICU. That’s the ultimate goal.

The hospital is home. It’s where I want to be. I’ve been taking certification courses post graduation – I have it all mapped out. NJCU surprised me a bit – it was a totally immersive

program. I was commuting from 40 minutes away, so I woke up really early every day for a year to get to clinicals. But I

knew I could do it. I put everything I had into the program, and I feel like I had gained so much coming out of it.”
