NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED

TONIGHT, WE HONOR A SILVER STAR

United States Naval Commander Bill Shankel spent more than seven years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War. He maintains a compelling perspective about his ordeal.

“I guess seven years and two months is a long time to be a POW, but the older I get, the better the ratio gets,” Shankel says. “In other words, that time I was in captivity is now less than 10 percent of my lifetime. It's not like I don't think about it every day, but I survived it.”

He survived with grit and determination, withstanding horri c conditions.

“You just don't quit,” says Shankel about his overriding attitude. “I always knew that eventually I would get out of there. We all did. A lot of the torture and crap that we went through was just for propaganda. They weren't after military secrets or anything like that. Most of us were injured, but we got over it.”

Shankel was designated as a Naval Aviator at Naval Air Station (NAS) Kingsville, Texas, in August of 1962. After completing A-4 Skyhawk Replacement Air Group training with VA-125 at NAS Lemoore, Calif., Shankel served with VA-94 at NAS Lemoore and deployed aboard the aircraft carriers USS Ranger and USS Enterprise. Shankel made two combat deployments to Southeast Asia from August 1964 to May 1965, and again from October 1965 until Dec. 23 when he was forced to eject over North Vietnam and was captured.

Shankel was released during Operation Homecoming on February 12, 1973, and spent a few days at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, California. He later became a

Ever humble, Shankel is appreciative to be part of the NFR Military Honors presented by Boot Barn.

“It's a total surprise,” Shankel says. “I've been to the NFR many times and I've seen the Congressional Medal of Honor recipients there. Those guys are the real heroes. I just failed to return home from a mission.”

With all he has endured, Shankel has an important message to share.

“You have to have faith in yourself, no matter what,” Shankel says. “When I rst got shot down, I felt that I failed because I did not return from my mission. One day I realized that I wasn't that bad of a person. After all, I was a ghter pilot in the Navy. I could land an airplane on an aircraft carrier at night. And during all of that time in captivity, I focused on the positives like still having all of my ngers and toes and not having gone crazy. Everyone should be thankful for what they have.”

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while interned as a Prisoner of War in North Vietnam. In December 1965, his captors, completely ignoring international agreements, subjected him to extreme mental and physical cruelties in an attempt to obtain military information and false confessions for propaganda purposes. Through his resistance to those brutalities, he contributed signi cantly toward the eventual abandonment of harsh treatment by the North Vietnamese, which was attracting international attention. By his determination, courage, resourcefulness, and devotion to duty, he re ected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Naval Service and the United States Armed Forces.
