NFR MILITARY HONORS PRESENTED BY
TONIGHT, WE HONOR A FORMER PRCA CARD MEMBER WHO IS ALSO A VIETNAM WAR PURPLE HEART RECIPIENT
Paul Bowers, Sr. is a former card-carrying Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association cowboy who rode bulls and bareback. He also served in the Vietnam War and has made his Seminole tribe proud throughout his life.
Some 50 years after his military service, and decades after he actively competed in PRCA events, Bowers, Sr. is still involved in rodeo. Bowers, Sr. assists Troy Weekley with the popular and successful Southeastern Circuit Finals in Davie, Florida, and his son, Paul Bowers, Jr., is a PRCA stock contractor.
Tonight’s inclusion in the NFR Military Honors presented by Boot Barn was completely unexpected for Bowers, Sr., kind of like when a bucking bull goes right, even when his tendencies are to turn left.
“I appreciate it a lot, but I had no idea this would happen,” says Bowers, Sr. “During the ceremony, I will be thinking about all of the people who I served with, what I served for, our freedom, and a lot more. It is very nice that people care about me and other veterans.”
Bowers, Sr. was a corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps, but his fellow soldiers in the elds and jungles of Vietnam just called him ‘Chief’ for his bravery and leadership. His rst introduction to the battle eld was horri c and was a de ning moment for him in many ways.
“The rst time we were out in the bush, we went up on what they called a rock pile on a mountain,” says Bowers, Sr. “They were shooting M50 mortars at us and the machine gunners were wiped out right there in front of me. I didn't know what to think or do, but one of my commanding o cers said, ‘Hey, just pick up the gun and go.’ I picked up a machine gun and I used that machine gun for the entire time I was there.”

EMPLOYEE SERVICE AWARDS
A strong team is the reason why the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is so successful in front of and behind the scenes. Meet the best-of-the-best NFR team members during this special ceremony.
During his stint in Vietnam, Bowers, Sr. was usually up front leading his fellow soldiers. At one point, they entered Laos, where not many “friendlies” went because of the danger. His awareness and instincts avoided disaster.
“I saw some tripwire lines attached to mines and stopped the rest of the guys,” Bowers. Sr. told Seminole Tribune writer Beverly Bidney in 2019. “I saved the whole company.”
Bowers, Sr. earned two Purple Hearts during his service prior to being honorably discharged in 1970 due to a ruptured eardrum. It was then that rodeo once again became part of his life.
“I started o with junior rodeos when I was younger, and when I rst got back from the war, I couldn’t nd a job, so I got back involved with rodeo,” says Bowers, Sr. “People kind of made fun of me. They said, ‘What did you do in the service?’ I told them, ‘I carried a machine gun.’ They would then tell me, ‘Well, we don't have a job here for a machine gunner.’ I didn't appreciate that, but I had to nd something today, so I started rodeoing.”
The Bowers family has been involved in rodeo ever since.
Bowers, Jr. is partners with Marty Johns in 5 Star Rodeo. In 2021, one of their bucking horses, Archie, earned a spot in the NFR. A highlight was when Ryder Wright scored 84.5 on Archie during round two to nish fourth and earn $9,144.
In the 1980s, Bowers, Sr. started his own herd in Big Cypress, Florida, and he also served as the Big Cypress Board Representative for about a dozen years. He remains active in rodeo with Weekley and helps with sponsorship and other details for the Southeastern Circuit Finals, which is the Championship for 96 Professional Cowboys and Cowgirls from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
The Southeastern Circuit is one of the top Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Circuits within the United States, with $250,000 in prize money on the line in addition to championship belt buckles and saddles. The year-end champ and nals champ qualify for the $1 million RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo.
