GROUCHO & CAVETT

Message to Our Members

We all know that Gibbon’s own Dick Cave is a legend in latenight television, but did you know comedian Groucho Marx mentored the Nebraska native?

This month, American Masters chronicles the bond between the two iconic performers with new interviews and rare recordings. In 1968, when Cave began hosting his own talk show, Marx became a frequent guest, capturing what Cave calls “the last of Groucho’s greatness.”

I’ve discovered that in Nebraska, sports is more than a game. As we wrap up our celebration of the 50th anniversary of landmark Title IX legislation, we are thrilled to bring you live coverage of three Nebraska women’s basketball games in December.

This issue of PREMIERE also highlights a great line-up of holiday programming on radio and television. Celebrate the season with the Tabernacle Choir, learn about Jewish immigrants who wrote America’s Christmas music, follow Santa Clauses in training and listen to Tchaikovsky’s complete ballet, The Nutcracker, on radio. Find our entire line-up at NebraskaPublicMedia.org/holiday.

beloved holiday specials and new episodes of Donkey Hodie, Sesame Street and Curious George. Remember you can watch PBS KIDS anytime, anywhere – online, on our apps and free over-the-air on our 24/7 dedicated PBS KIDS channel.

If you are making resolutions for 2023, our marathon of New Year, New You programs on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 will have you eating be er, exercising more and ge ing your finances in order. I hope you can find the inspiration and encouragement to become an even be er version of yourself!

My December calendar is full of work commitments and the usual holiday hustle that makes the days pass too quickly. I hope to slow down, bake some cookies and savor the season with my friends and family. Thank you for being part of our Nebraska Public Media family in 2022. Your generous gi s support an essential service that benefits all Nebraskans.

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

The lights are up, the snow is falling and the kids are home for winter break! PBS KIDS is making the season bright with a festive lineup of family favorites sprinkled throughout our television schedule. Watch for Chief Strategy O cer

Newest Host Connects with Smart, Curious Listeners

All Things Considered is the most listened-to, a ernoon drive-time, news radio program in the country. Every weekday, hosts Ailsa Chang, Mary Louise Kelly, Ari Shapiro and Juana Summers, who joined the show in June 2022, use the magic of sound to bring life to the biggest stories of the day.

A veteran NPR reporter, Summers spent more than a decade covering national politics and presidential elections, most recently as NPR’s political correspondent covering race, justice and politics. In an interview, Summers said she hopes to further expand the program’s reach to new and diverse audiences –empowering them to tell their stories. She also hopes to reach younger audiences in digital spaces. Summers got her start in public radio at KBIA in Columbia, Mo., on the campus of the University of Missouri. TEACH KIDS TO CELEBRATE DIVERSITY

When young children meet people with di erent perspectives and backgrounds, their worlds become more vibrant, and they strengthen their life skills for becoming more empathetic, understanding and open-minded.

Teach your kids to think, “Okay! People are di erent!” when they see a family who doesn’t look like yours, when they notice the races and ethnicities of their classmates, or they reference the variety of ways people think, talk, work or worship.

The PBS KIDS series Alma’s Way celebrates the di erences between kids and grown-ups who live, work and play in Alma’s Bronx neighborhood. ‘Think Through’ moments help children (and grown-ups) to widen their perspectives, appreciate di erences and be more compassionate.

Remembering ‘Moments that Ma er’ from 2022

How have

you spent the

past year?

As you reflect on the experiences that stand out, we hope you consider Nebraska Public Media to be part of the moments that ma er.

On television, radio, online and on our social media platforms, we are expanding fact-based news coverage, telling local stories, listening to diverse voices and inventing opportunities for an educational future transformed by technology. We believe our work provides an essential public service to citizens living in rural and urban communities across Nebraska.

Members sustain our e orts with generous support throughout the year, helping us to meet challenges, evolve and adapt. As 2022 ends, it is the

perfect time to make an additional year-end gi to support public media in Nebraska.

With careful financial planning, a gi made by Dec. 31, 2022 could possibly result in tax benefits.

Longtime

Journalist Respects Public Media News

As Mary Kay Quinlan logged miles driving her two young sons to school and activities like Boy Scouts and music lessons, she discovered public radio. It became her companion as she traveled the streets of Lincoln in the late 1990s, and the ‘friendship’ continues today.

“It’s my default station. Wherever I drive, my radio is always tuned to Nebraska Public Media,” she said.

As a flutist, classical music lover and self-described ‘news nerd,’ Quinlan said the format on our FM radio channel perfectly fits her personality. “This is the kind of journalism I believe in, admire and respect,” she said.

Quinlan spent her entire career in journalism. She graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

journalism college and earned her master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. She reported for the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle in New York, the Washington Bureau of the Omaha World-Herald and Ganne News Service in Washington, D.C., where she wrote for Midwestern newspapers and covered the farm crisis.

Back in Lincoln, she taught reporting and writing courses at UNL. She was with students at a city council meeting on the

morning of Sept. 11, 2001. As she drove back to campus, she listened to Morning Edition on Nebraska Public Media.

“The NPR news coverage was astonishingly professional under such pressure and cemented my support for public media,” Quinlan explained. “It was impressive and it’s what I value as a news professional.” She transitioned from listener to member in response to one fall membership drive. “I was listening in the car as I stopped by the post o ce, and I just thought I should be contributing something – so I called!”

Quinlan makes her charitable gi s at the end of the year, when she knows what will work best for her. “It became a habit out of necessity,” she said. “We need to recognize the value of our favorite things. In this big marketplace of ideas, public media can have a significant impact and we as a community are all be er o because of it.”
