Marine Technology Student Profile

An interview with Kelly Smith, 4th Year, Bachelor of Science - Marine Technology student

What brought you to NMC Marine Tech?

When I started my college journey, I was completely undecided on what path to take. Out of curiosity, I signed up for the UAS (drones) class and discovered a passion for technology but a dislike of gravity. However, piloting an underwater ROV doesn’t require fighting gravity. This led to enrolling in NMC’s bachelor’s degree in Marine Technology.

What has been the most rewarding experience while in the program?

Just one? If I had to pick, it would be my work on the Hardy Dam project. The report I wrote provided me the opportunity to present our findings to our client and Marine Technology led to our program being granted $50,000 towards new equipment! This resulted in me being invited to present at the Underwater Intervention conference in New Orleans, where I met various industry professionals, one of which set me up with my summer Marine Technology internship. Tell us about your summer internship.

My internship this summer has me relocating to Buffalo, NY where I will work on various projects for one of the industry’s leading companies. My first project will be in California performing a long tunnel inspection using an ROV. With this degree, you can choose to work offshore, in an office, or a combination of both.

Any words of advice for prospective students or someone looking for a new career?

The greatest aspect of our program is that class sizes are small and you work closely with all of your instructors. Be active, ask questions, and get to know your instructors and they will be your biggest advocates. And work tirelessly to get the best opportunities for your future career.
