Get free lunch all summer

Free Summer Meals

Ticked Off on Staten Island!

School is out, but grumbling bellies don’t break for summer. The Summer Meals Program has returned this year, providing free, healthy breakfast and lunch to all children ages 18 and under at hundreds of locations around the City until August 30 (with the exception of July 4 and August 12). The Summer Meals Program is available at various public schools, community pool centers, libraries, and other locations around the city. Children do not need to register or show any kind of documentation or ID to receive their free meal. To find a Summer Meals location or view a menu, go toschools.nyc.gov/school-life/food/ or link directly at siparent.com.

Tick season is upon us, and every year we need to be more cautious than the last. Reports of Lyme disease have grown exponentially in Staten Island over the past few years. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the number of cases jumped 250% from 2012 to 2016. So how prepared are we for tick season this year? Everyone knows that ticks are found on deer, but did you know they are also commonly found on mice? The City has invested millions of dollars in past years to reduce the deer population through vasectomies, a program that continues for the next five years, they’re now also trying a tick-prevention method with mice. Mice are lured into bait boxes, where they receive a dose of fipronil, which kills ticks on animals. Another cause for concern is the sudden appearance of the Asian long-horned tick, an invasive species which can reproduce on its own. Because of their asexual nature, thousands of these ticks can be found on a single person or animal. The first sighting of this species in New York was on Staten Island’s South Shore. Last month, Borough President James Oddo hosted a forum to educate people on Lyme Disease prevention. He stressed the importance of public awareness, stating the following: “Our quest to mitigate the growing number of Staten Islanders suffering from Lyme disease is being fought on many fronts, and educating the public about the disease and how it is spread is a vital step. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Environmental Biology at Columbia University are working with us on the front lines to combat ticks and the spread of Lyme disease. It is essential Staten Islanders gain as much information as possible to be able to protect themselves.” For more information on preventing Lyme disease, go to siparent.com/ticks.

AdvantageCare Physicians Opens in the Mall AdvantageCare Physicians (ACPNY) has opened a new medical office at the Staten Island Mall on Richmond Avenue. Their services include urgent care as well as extended evening, weekend and holiday hours – making it the perfect location for a new medical office. Aside from walk-in services, they offer primary care as well to help patients ensure they see the right type of provider at the right time. The ACPNY practice spans all five boroughs and Long Island, and the new Richmond Avenue mall location is the third in Staten Island. You can schedule your first appointment at ACPNY.com/SI now.

2020 High School Directory If your child is entering eighth grade this fall, then now is the time to start thinking about high school. The 2019 NYC High School Directory will be available this summer online at the Department of Education website, and it’s filled with important information for students preparing to enter High School in the fall of 2020. You’ll find High School Fair dates, admissions test dates, application deadlines, important websites, as well as guidelines for applying, methods of admission, programs offered, and much more. You can link to the directory at siparent.com to get started helping your teen or tween apply to the high school of their choice.

Big Apple Winners Seventeen educators from all five boroughs were honored for their outstanding work, including Paraskevi Langis, High School Biology and General Science Teacher at Gaynor McCown Expeditionary Learning School here in Staten Island. The Big Apple Awards is a citywide recognition program open to all full-time teachers in New York City public schools and recipients were selected from a record 7,100 nominations.

- Be careful when children are crafting with sequins, as the product does have a choke hazard warning on the label. - Protect your work surface with wax (or palette) paper and wear an apron (or other protective garment) to protect clothing, as the food coloring may stain. - When adding food coloring, dip a craft stick into the food coloring container and then mix the color into the glue, stirring thoroughly until it’s completely blended. Always use a new, clean craft stick when dipping into your food coloring in order to avoid cross-contamination. - Adult supervision is required. This project is not appropriate for children under the age of 3 years. Sliding Into September Summer study preps kids for return to classroom

By Christine Albano Christine Albano, now the mom of three ages 21, 17, and 15, recalls reviewing math flash cards, summer reading books, and vocabulary words on the beach in the lazy days of summer when her kids were in grade school.

Staten Island parents want to savor the lazy days of summer with their children, but that doesn’t mean it’s all fun and games in the two-and-a-half month hiatus from school.

I

n between trips to the beach and family vacations, kids are brushing up on important academic lessons -- like reading and math -- to avoid the “summer slide.” Characterized as the lengthy summer gap away from a routine school setting when kids can easily let important key educational lessons slip their minds, the phenomenon is easy to combat, Staten Island parents say. With the first day of school right around the corner, local parents say it is important to help their kids retain the academic knowledge they gained in the previous school year while prepping for September. Nicole Damon Esposito, a longtime Eltingville resident, said old-fashioned techniques, such as making flashcards on index cards with her daughters, and making their own math worksheets, keeps them on track away from the classroom. “We are learning all day every day,” she said. “They don’t really know any different so I think it’s just as good as digital,” Ms. Esposito said. The girls -- ages 6 and 3 -- have no complaints, and are academically advanced for their ages as they prepare to enter first grade and pre-K, respectively, she said.

The Lindelof girls–Olivia,5, and Genevieve, 3 –doing some work on an iPad.

Cindy Santora of New Dorp takes advantage of title one summer programming at a local Catholic school four days a week for six weeks through July and August. “Most Catholic school parents are unaware that a lot of the programs available to public school students are also available to private school students,” Ms. Santora said. Her daughter, Addison, 8, is looking forward to the academic program as well as the day trips, while her mom prefers the extra help in English/Language Arts and math, which her daughter receives tuition free as an alternative to summer camp.

Addison Santora of New Dorp

“It basically reinforces her 2nd grade curriculum,” Ms. Santora said. She has been utilizing the program since her daughter was in kindergarten. “The first year we were offered it I was insulted, but after talking to the staff they told me about the small class size and one-on-one tutoring provided,” she explained. “We gave it a try and she loved it,” she said of Addison, who is heading into third grade in the fall. “We have been attending every year it’s offered.” Some parents, like Jamie Lindelof of Tottenville, combine the hands-on approach with digital rewards for doing summer prep work to give them an incentive. She prompts her daughter Olivia to brush up on her academics early in the morning so she still has time for other activities later in the day. “Last summer I gave her 15 minutes of tablet time for every page she completed,” Ms. Lindelof said. In addition, before she can play any non-educational games or activities on her tablet, she has to complete one hour of educational games or reading books. Some parents agree inexpensive workbooks as well as library trips assist their children with supplemental educational work during summer vacation, while some opt for digital resources that are either free, like the Prodigy Math Game app, or those that offer free trials ahead of a paid subscription. The Prodigy app also has a full website at prodigygame.com where parents can sign up for a free account and monitor their child’s progress on a dashboard. Epic!, a digital library with 35,000 books and learning videos for kids 12 and under, is another popular app recommended by many Staten Island parents. Other free apps, like My Math Flash Cards, Khan Academy for Kids, Math Kids, PBS Kids Games, A+ Spelling Bee English Words, and Quizlet, are also popular resources. To cultivate their children’s love of reading -- especially over the summer months -- many parents take advantage of free programs and opportunities at the New York Public Libraries on Staten Island. “All local public libraries provide summer reading suggestions and resources and incentives for kids of all ages,” Staten Island Parent of two daughters Marie Coughlin said. 18 July 2019 • siparent.com

raising kids “Some also coordinate summer reading programs for adults which helps facilitate reading as a family habit,” she added. The New York Public Library kicked off its summer reading program in June and has a variety of reading and literacy programs and free events for kids and teens this summer, such as KidsLIVE, where they can meet their favorite authors, artists, filmmakers, musicians, fashionistas, and more. Some of their local programs on Staten Island include reading and literacy, arts & crafts, and interactive events and workshops. Bookmark the Staten Island Parent Family Calendar at siparent.com to check our daily listings of educational programs in local branches. On a global scale, Scholastic, the world wide children’s publishing, education, and media company, is sponsoring the Scholastic Summer Read-a-Palooza, a nation-wide movement to unite kids, parents, educators, public librarians, community partners, and booksellers to get books into the hands of more kids during the summer, keeping every child reading.

Joshua Zucconi of Great Kills

Donna Zucconi said besides using the Epic! app, her 8-year-old son Joshua goes to the library often -including over the summer -- to further develop his love of reading. “He usually finds a series at the library and tries to read as many books in the series as we can -- even if it means visiting different branches” in between trips to Dorney Park, the movies, the beach and favorite museums and other attractions on their summer bucket list, Ms. Zucconi, a resident of Great Kills, said. Last year, he favored the Geronimo Stilton book series -- about a talking mouse who is a best-selling author, journalist, and editor of The Rodent Gazette. This year, he’s considering the Goosebumps series, she said. He also uses the Prodigy app to help with math -- and spends part of his summer completing his school issued English/Language Arts assignments and Math packets. Overall, Staten Island parents say their children are receptive and enjoy squeezing in some academics into their summer break from the classroom. “They look at schoolwork as fun so they have no issues doing it over the summer,” Ms. Esposito said. 20 July 2019 • siparent.com

Important Educational Questions educators weigh in on current topics

Experienced educators and authors Peggy Gisler and Marge Eberts give solid advice about everything school and education-related. Read more Q & A @ www.siparent.com/dearteacher Parents should send questions and comments to dearteacher@dearteacher.com

Parents: Bookworms are typically good students. The more your children read, the more likely they will become skilled readers who love the printed word. Every summer our Dear Teacher column offers activities that will keep your children’s academic skills sharp. This year our focus is on reading – the skill that affects every subject in school. Hopefully, by having fun with reading this summer, your children will become avid readers. On our Dear Teacher website, they will find even more reading activities under “Learning Activities.” Start out with Riddle Fun A riddle can be described as a question that needs to be solved using one’s intelligence and reasoning. Have your children find riddles online and in books to share for several nights at the dinner table. There are popular riddles like Albert Einstein’s riddle that he estimates only 2 percent of the population can solve. And there is the riddle in Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland that asks: “Why is a raven like a writing desk?” Hobbit readers might like to find the riddle that Bilbo Baggins used to stump Gollum so he could escape from a tunnel under the Misty Mountains.

Challenge your children to find the answer to this 4000 BC riddle: “There is a house. One enters it blind and comes out seeing. What is it?” Graphic Novels Can Entice Reluctant Readers A graphic novel is defined as a work of fiction or nonfiction using comic strips published as a book. Introduce your readers to classic literary works. Have them read several graphic novel formats. Reluctant readers can be enticed to read more by reading graphic novels. It can be difficult to find graphic novels that are both good quality and appealing to specific age groups. Two good lists found online are those put out the American Library Association and by Common Sense Media. Make Poetry Reading Fun There is a definite relationship between preschoolers hearing and reading poetry to their becoming among the best readers in the early grades. So, read nursery rhymes and poems to them as they will learn so much about phonemic awareness. Too few older children read poetry. Fortunately, there are poets who make poetry read-

LIPM ing fun. Introduce them to the poems of Shel Silverstein, Bruce Lansky, Jack Prelutsky and Judith Viorst. Then try to hook them on more serious poetry by reading to them the poems of Edgar Allan Poe, Maya Angelou, Walt Whitman, Robert Frost and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. These are poets with whom everyone should be familiar. Patriotic Reading will Acquaint Children with American History This is the month with the Fourth of July so reading about our history is appropriate. Then your children can share what they have learned with the rest of the family. Visit readingrockets.org and you’ll find a list of recommended books for children up to 9-years-old. Each book has information about real and legendary heroes. On history.com, your older children can look at its “Day in History” and find a new story every day for what happened on that day in history. Online at constitution facts.com, have your children click on “Declaration of Independence” to find out more details about the signers and signing of the Declaration. For red, white and blue fun, visit dearteacher.com more science learning activities and find patriotic activities. They will learn about safe things that they can do to celebrate the Fourth like experiencing “Fireworks in their Mouths” or creating fireworks in a glass. Word Games Can Be Great Vocabulary Builders Your children can have fun and not even realize that at the same time they are building their vocabularies. On television or apps, they can view Wheel of Fortune and Chain Reaction. Then there are games in which they need to arrange letters such as Boggle and the variants of Scrabble. Finally, play some paper and pencil word games with them to hook them on crossword puzzles, cryptograms and word searches. Reading Check-up Time Before the new School Year For our final reading activity parents should take the time to visit the DearTeacher.com website, where you will be able to find out your children’s reading level before the start of the school year. Just give them the free San Diego Reading Assessment on the home page. This assessment has stood up to examination by numerous researchers as a good indicator of children’s reading levels. It will not give you the whole picture of your children’s reading ability, but it will tell you how well your children are reading words at each grade level. The advantage of knowing your children’s reading level is that you will have an idea before school starts of whether they are reading below, above or on grade level. If they are reading below or considerably below grade level, you should discuss this as soon as possible with their teachers. Find out what help can be given to them at school. For some a test for learning disabilities will be appropriate.

The New York City School Safety Fund As city camera program expands, collected fines could be dedicated to improving safety near schools

A

By Michael Reilly NYS Assemblyman, previous District 31 Community Education Council President and former New York City Police Department Lieutenant.

A few weeks ago, I introduced a legislative package which establishes the New York City School Safety Fund. This fund would serve as a “lock box” to ensure that all fines collected through the city’s speed and red light camera programs are used by New York City officials solely to bolster pedestrian safety in school zones. I introduced these bills in response to a new law which increases the citywide total of mobile and stationary school zone speed cameras from 140 to 750, and another pending Governor Cuomo’s signature which uses cameras affixed to school bus stop signs to ticket motorists who disobey them. Now officially a bipartisan effort, Senator Diane Savino has introduced Bill A08232 to Senate. Currently all revenue generated from the violations are deposited into New York City’s General Fund via the Department of Finance. Under this current system the millions of dollars are diverted to non-safety projects selected by City Hall. My proposal will require a dedicated fund mandating that the revenue be solely used to improve traffic safety. This money should be used in addition to traditional financial allocations the city makes for safety projects. The NYC Schools

Safety Fund would be a supplemental resource. Monies deposited into the New York City School Safety Fund would be available to the Chancellor of the city Department of Education, the Commissioner of the Police Department, and the Commissioner of the city Department of Transportation for the purpose of supporting various pedestrian safety improvement initiatives throughout the city, such as hiring additional crossing guards, installing new signage, constructing sidewalks and restoring faded road markings like crosswalks. I recently joined Mr. Phil Carolla, Principal of P.S. 56 in Woodrow, to survey the dangerous traffic conditions that members of the community have shared. Our review made it abundantly clear that something must be done to enhance pedestrian safety around the school. The unfortunate truth is that this is not just problem at P.S. 56, but at many of our local schools. My staff and I will be working with our school communities, local New York City Police Department Precincts and the New York City Department of Transportation to explore and develop ways to improve safety near our schools. What I am proposing would save lives by utilizing those monies specifically for pedestrian safety improvement initiatives.

Pool Party Safety 101 How to prevent an all-too-common summertime tragedy

By Eric Lupton An advocate for pool safety who speaks nationwide to spread the word about drowning prevention and president of Life Saver Pool Fence, which is recognized by the CPSC as a Safety Leader and the country’s largest pool fence company with all fences made in the USA.

An average of 290 children under the age of five drown in pools and spas every year. In 69% of those drownings, a parent was responsible for supervising the child and most occurred when a child was thought to be in the house but slipped outside without anyone knowing. In 77% of accidental drownings, the child had been seen 5 minutes or less before being missed and eventually found in the pool.

S

upervision can and does fail, which is why safety advocates urge families to use layers of protection before, during and after pool parties Before the Party Check your pool safety fence. Make sure your pool fence has a self-closing, self-latching gate so children cannot wander into the pool area when parents are not around. Before the party, you’ll want to walk the length of the fence to ensure there are no gaps kids can climb through or areas they can climb over. A mesh pool safety fence has proven to be an effective layer of protection with a transparent and aesthetically pleasing look that is easy to remove and reinstall by the homeowner. The best protection is to surround the pool with the fence, so there are no doors or windows leading directly from the home into the pool area. Close doggy doors. Any pet doors that grant access the pool should be closed before the party begins and stay closed until the party is over. Toddlers are known to mimic pets and may follow them right out the doggy door and into the pool area, putting them

at risk of falling in. If possible, seal off the doggy door so a child cannot open it and get into the pool area. Install locks on all doors and windows. It’s easy to install locks high and out of the reach of young children on every door and window that leads to the pool area. Some drownings happen because a parent or guest didn’t know their toddler had figured out the door knob or lock and the simply walked out on their own. Don’t forget sliding glass doors that small children can slide open. Learn CPR. No matter how hard we try, there are going to be brief moments when we are not looking directly at our children. Someone knocks on the door, the phone rings, your older child runs inside with a bloody nose — life happens. Implementing multiple layers of protection is the best way to make sure that these distractions don’t turn into tragedy. That’s why every parent, babysitter, and teenager should also be trained in CPR. You can do it in a few hours. This training is essential to get oxygen to the brain and can make the difference between life, permanent disability, and death.

During the Party Assign Water Watchers. When children are in the pool, assign one person as a designated Water Watcher and change shifts every 15 minutes. Active supervision means your full attention is on the children in the pool. • Sit close to the pool so you can see everything • Give your phone to a friend so you are not tempted to take photos • No books, magazines, or tablets • Do a regular headcount • Step in when there is too much horsing around • If you have to walk away for any reason, another adult must be designated as the Water Watcher. Do not leave a toddler or young child in the pool area without adult supervision. Older children are not always as sensitive to the dangers of drowning, and my not recognize the warning signs. Know the signs of drowning. Most drownings don’t involve a lot of yelling or splashing around. Except in rare circumstances, people who are drowning cannot call out for help. While they may be able to pull themselves up momentarily above the surface of the water, they are not above the water long enough to exhale, inhale and yell for help. Someone who is drowning also cannot wave for help. They cannot voluntarily control their arm movements, as they instinctively extend their arms laterally to press down on the water’s surface to try to leverage their bodies and lift their face out of the water. Look for these signs of drowning: • Head low in the water, mouth at water level • Head tilted back with mouth open • Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus • Eyes closed • Hair over forehead or eyes • Body is upright and vertical, but there is no leg kick • Hyperventilating or gasping • Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway • Trying to roll over on the back • Appear to be climbing an invisible ladder Consider child immersion alarms. The safest protection you can have for a child is a wearable immersion alarm, like the Safety Turtle (see next page), which triggers an alarm if the sensor gets wet. It resembles a watch and is great for pool parties when there is a lot of commotion. It can protect a child against all water hazards including ponds and rivers, and is portable so it can be used on vacation or when visiting. After the Party Remove toys after swimming. After the party is over, remove all toys, floats, balloons, or food. Children who are in pursuit of a toy won’t think twice about breaking the rules to get it, so you should never leave objects in the pool that could attract a child to the water. Check the fence. Close the gate and make sure it

raising kids locks properly. Also, move any tables or chairs away from the pool fence so they cannot be used to climb over. Isolate the pool area to be used for swimming only, so anyone who goes into the pool area after pool time is over will be more easily recognized. Set your alarms. If you have an alarm on your pool gate, make sure you set it and give adults a bypass so kids can’t wander into the pool area. If the party has moved inside, consider setting a door alarm as well. You can also get alarms for the pool itself. Surface pool alarms will trigger an alarm when the water’s surface is broken, however, a small child could quietly walk down the steps and slip under water without making a big splash or setting off the alarm. Subsurface pool alarms are costlier, but detect disturbances beneath the surface. They are less prone to false triggers than floating alarms and more reliable than surface alarms. Consider This Hundreds of families lose children to accident drowning each year. For every child drowning, 11 children manage to survive – but many suffer a disabling brain damage. You cannot drown-proof a child, but every layer of protection that you add significantly reduces the chance of a child drowning incident– the more, the better. Of those steps, pool safety fencing is one of the the most effective at preventing fatal drowning incidents because it physically prevents access to the pool, making your pool safer for your children and your neighbors. You wouldn’t own a car without seat belts. Don’t own a pool without protecting it.
