WHAT DO YOU WANT TO

Do you remember how you answered as a child when people asked you what you wanted to be when you grew up? For me, I wanted to be a teacher from the moment I was old enough to prepare tests and report cards for my stuffed animals and little brothers According to recent surveys, the most common answers by children include astronaut, teacher, veterinarian, doctor, nurse, ballerina, or firefighter.

As educators and parents, we often ask young people about their future aspirations, encouraging them to dream big and explore their passions and God's calling. We understand that the journey to finding one ' s calling can involve many twists and turns, and we want to be here to support our students every step of the way. For instance, when a child expresses interest in pursuing seemingly disparate careers such as being a YouTuber and a professional hockey player, we don't discourage them by suggesting a more "practical" path Instead, we motivate them to work hard, stay active, study diligently, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. When a high school student shares with us a dream college they want to attend, we do everything we can to help them prepare Of course it is exciting to think about our students' future opportunities, but it is also exciting to consider where God is leading OCSI in the future

Every six years, OCSI undertakes a comprehensive review of our mission, vision, and values to ensure they align with our school's unique and growing needs This year, our dedicated staff, faculty, and board came together to refine our vision and values to better communicate our future goals and to ensure alignment with our expected student outcomes - the EAGLES. We are excited to welcome a visiting team from ACSI and WASC, our accreditation agencies, next school year and to share our new vision and values with them.

Page 04 www.reallygreatsite.com

BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?

OCSI's updated vision statement embodies our commitment to nurturing students' spiritual growth, promoting academic excellence, and encouraging a heart for service.

A Christ-centered learning community that equips students to follow Jesus, pursue excellence, and serve others.

We have also updated our core values to reflect our school's culture and aspirations

Excellence: We value personal and organizational excellence and stay focused on our mission

Growth: We value setting goals and using our God-given gifts to encourage and support growth Service: We value Christ-centered community and follow Jesus’ example to serve others.

We are excited to continue building a vibrant, supportive, and Christ-centered community at OCSI, where students can grow and thrive academically, spiritually, and personally.

Sincerely,

Page 04 www.reallygreatsite.com

Advanced Placement Courses

What are AP Courses?

AP, or Advanced placement courses are college level courses taught in high school that may be eligible for college credit.

What is the advantage of taking an AP course?

AP courses can help students in a variety of ways:

AP courses look good on high school transcripts. They show a potential university that a student is willing to challenge themself

AP courses can also be beneficial to a student's GPA. AP courses are on a 5 point scale, so it is a way to increase the GPA, which is on a 4 point scale.

AP courses may also be accepted by some universities as college credit, which saves a student both time and money.

However, getting an acceptable score on an AP Exam is necessary for college credit Also, it is up to the college to accept AP courses or not

Should everyone take an AP course?

Not necessarily-- As the courses can be quite rigorous, students should only take an AP course if they are willing to put in the extra time and effort required Additionally, there are some requirements to being accepted into an AP course.

This year we reviewed the curriculum for English and P.E. Teachers collaborated to review our current standards and work on more vertical alignment within the department particularly in regards to correctly citing sources of information and grammar progression. This year the school also introduced ProQuest which is a collection of peer-reviewed scholarly journals for students to use when researching information for assignments

In addition to the regular English classes, the Literacy program experienced a number of successes this year. The literacy program was reviewed this year and we are excited to build on our growth and continue to find areas where we can do even batter This year, 82% of Literacy students improved their iReady test scores by more than 50% in their projected growth for the 22/23 school year. Also 25% of the current Literacy students have shown significant improvement in their test scores and English abilities and will be moving to Japanese class next school year It is encouraging to see students make such impressive growth and build the skills needed to thrive at OCSI!

The P E department also underwent a curriculum review and put in a tremendous amount of thought and time into developing a set of standards unique to our school that is based off of the SHAPE standards used in the U S The newly adopted standards reflect a biblical worldview of being good stewards of the bodies God has given us and encourage physical, mental, and emotional health

SY 2022-2023

SERVICE PROJECTS

Galatians 5:13 tells us to " serve one another humbly in love". This year the students got to humbly serve and to know the joy of serving through beach cleanups, helping at a local farm and university, putting together boxes of Christmas presents, cleaning churches raising funds and awareness. Serving brings fulfillment and touches lives, allowing us to spread kindness and the love of Christ to our communities.

This year in the secondary chapel, we covered questions that God has asked people thought out the Bible When God asks people questions, He already knows the answer, but we can learn something about God, by the questions He asks Questions like "Where are you " , God is searching for us, even though we have messed up. "What is in your hand?"

God can use whatever we have to further his kingdom We also covered James, looking at some very practical lessons about our faith, actions, prayer, temptation, and worldliness

This year, in elementary, we looked at the life of Jesus, covering the birth of Jesus, to the teachings of Jesus, all the way to the resurrection of Jesus We covered questions such as Why did Jesus come, What makes people special, and what did Jesus do to save us.

CHAPEL

The purpose of chapel is to give the students an opportunity to worship our amazing God and to learn from His Word. Mark 8:36 says, "What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?” Our life’s purpose is to live a life loving and serving our Creator.

The worship team is led by Mr. Heisey and is a big part of the secondary chapel. There are five different worship teams this year, two for middle schoool, two for high school, and one for the youth group. They learn music, practice playing together, and lead their fellow students in worship.

COMPUTING TECHNOLOGY IN SECONDARY CLASSROOMS

This year, we had the largest group of Advanced Placement (AP) students The 35 students in the AP Computer Science Principles course ranged from Freshmen through Seniors, all of whom embraced the challenges of the discipline This course was designed by College Board to introduce students to the breadth of the field of Computer Science. Students learned to solve problems through the development of algorithms and programs, and to use data as a discovery tool to extend their knowledge.

The best thing about the AP Computer Science Principles course is that it is not intended to be purely a coding class Rather, it aims to help students develop the technical skills required to pursue computer science careers, promote creativity and innovation and improve digital literacy and technology skills In a world where we are surrounded by technology almost every minute of the day, these skills are invaluable and provide a firm grounding for further study in Computer Science.

Part of the course requires students to undertake a Create Performance Task whereby they develop an app within specific boundaries. The students did an amazing job on this task, and were not permitted to seek help from any teachers. Collaboration and healthy competition spurred students on to create some outstanding apps Examples of some apps that were created included, a color palette maker, the impossible tic-tac-toe, hangman, projected incomes from college majors, Major League Baseball information, molecular formula practice and an acronym generator.

Artificial intelligence and other computing innovations continue to challenge educators this year as we navigate the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education. The accessibility of outside personalized guidance to students became a potential roadblock educators needed to navigate when this new technology emerged OCSI will continue to navigate this challenge through education, and administrative policies to ensure learning is not being compromised by these powerful tools.

At the core of our curricula in computing technologies as OCSI are the principles of stewardship, honesty and integrity, respect for privacy, justice and love of neighbor As Christians, we are called to use technology in a responsible manner and use computing innovations in ways that benefit others and contribute to the common good of society. Our OCSI students are excellent stewards of the resources God has entrusted them with, by using technology for self education, research and helping others
