A Quarter-Century of Designs from Deb Strain by Linzee Kull McCray @seamswrite Twenty-five years—that’s enough time to raise a child from infancy to adulthood, to grow a 50-foot-tall maple tree, or, if you’re Deb Strain, to design almost 100 lines of fabric. That’s right—each year since she signed her one-page contract with Moda in March of 1996, Deb’s created several lines of fabric that include Christmas, autumnthemed, and Halloween lines. And this time around she’s sharing Effie’s Woods—a cozy mix of wise owls, clever foxes, and curious raccoons, along with warmhearted reminders that You Are Loved and You Are Cherished. The imagery grew from watercolors of bunnies that Deb painted for her first granddaughter, Effie Olive, named for the grandmother of Deb’s husband, Scott. The first Effie Olive lived to be 106!
Keeping It Fresh
Using a variety of techniques and materials challenges Deb, even after 25 years of fabric design. “I’m constantly learning new things, which keeps me

In part, that’s because Deb’s days are also filled with family. During the pandemic, Deb and Scott have helped their 11-year-old twin grandsons, who live next door, with online school. “They’re in fifth grade and learning musical instruments, so we’ve experienced new coronet, clarinet, and violin players,” says Deb, “I like having commotion in the house!” Deb and Scott also took a cross-country Amtrak trip to visit their son Taylor, in Portland, Oregon, and Deb’s driven to New York to be with Effie, who is now 18 months old. Deb’s daughter and son-in-law are working from home, which gives Deb and Effie the perfect excuse to get outside and play.
Be Wise, Be Brave, Be Yourself Deb feels fortunate to be able to combine family time with a career she loves. “I get to create art every day and I never take it for granted,” she says. Over the past 25 years she’s seen trends in pattern and color come and go—her first Christmas line was primitive and dark, while in other years it was electric green and red. She loves seeing young people entering the industry, honoring and valuing quilting. And she’s been thrilled to watch Moda grow. “I’m honored to be a part of a company that has so much integrity—toward its designers, its employees, its shops,” she says. Moda’s openness to new ideas has allowed Deb to grow, too. “I’ve learned to have confidence in the things I love doing,” she says. “Creating a fabric line is exciting and fulfilling—it’s my happy place.”

When our first granddaughter, Effie, was born, her nursery theme was bunnies. Friendly, sweet bunnies. I painted a few watercolors for her room, and that inspired me to create this cozy collection. Effie's Woods are filled with kind, clever, curious animals, as well as ferns, mushrooms, and berries. The colors are soft, and gender-neutral - and the watercolor feel of the artwork is perfect for a cherished little one. My mother loves daylilies. Her gardens were a mix of many varieties of daylilies in yello w, orange and deep red, an dI particularly liked those with lots of spots and speckles. When I saw the wonderful peach and red Carolina Lilies, with their dramatic dots, curving petal s and dramatic arches, I fe ll in love. The curve of the petals, an d the hanging stamen rem ind me of twirling dancers with their elegant legs and ballet slipp ers. I've added graceful ferns, lacy leaves and a painted pa isley to accompany the spotted florals. The colors are Ruby , Peach, Grass and Aqua, with a few pops of Teal.
