MEET MODA'S NEW DESIGNER, ALLI OF ALLI K DESIGNS Author, mural-painter, podcast host, and business coach Alli Koch has yet another title to tack onto her resumé: fabric designer. The multi-talented artist’s distinctive work can be found on murals, phone cases, and wedding veils and now on Moda fabrics. Illustrations, a line of quilting cottons, coated cottons, and canvas fabrics features her signature black-and-white florals. “With anything I design, I make it my goal and purpose to create something that I’d put in my own shopping cart or hang in my house,” says Alli. “I want to create something I truly love and that gives me joy.” Illustrations is exactly that. Its black and white palette reflects Alli’s personal style. “People walk into my house and say ‘Oh, you’re so on brand!’” she says. “But the brand is me. I’m a minimalist—my house is decorated with black and white and plants, and I dress in black.” Alli says that limiting her palette to two colors might be purely smart or purely lazy—or both. When she was in high school, deciding what to wear every day was stressful and so when she met a friend in college who only wore black, Alli thought “It’s genius! It looks stylish and everything matches!” Over time her own wardrobe evolved to all black clothing (with occasional white accents). “It’s one less thing I have to think about,” she says. College was also where Alli went to study interior design, but family members expressed skepticism about available jobs so she “chickened out” and switched to business and marketing. “Ironically, I couldn’t get a job in that field,” she says with a laugh. Throughout those years, her love of art persisted and she honed her style by painting canvases for her first apartment and as gifts for friends. As friends of those friends saw her work, orders rolled in. The winter holidays brought so many requests for her canvasses that she started thinking this could be a business. “I didn’t have an
example growing up of how to run my own business, so I wasn’t sure how to do it,” she says. “But when my husband said ‘It’s a hobby,’ I decided that I was going to prove him wrong!” Working from her kitchen table, she created invitations, sign boards, and other decorative items for the wedding industry. Eventually she found a studio on Craigslist and it became a place of beginnings: it was where she painted her first mural and got her first book deal. “My books changed everything for me,” she says. Her first, How to Draw Modern Florals, was published in 2017. “I’d get messages saying ‘I picked up your book and it inspired me to start a business’” says Alli. “In those books I found my purpose—I was put on earth to build confidence in others.” That volume has been followed by five more, including most recently All the Things: How to Draw Books for Kids. Alli’s not the only author in the family. Her father, Tony Bridwell, a former Chief People Officer and consultant for corporations, has six published books as well. For the past 16 years the father-daughter duo have had a standing Saturday breakfast date, where they talk about the highs and lows of the week and share insights about leadership and life. After appearing together on a radio show, in 2017 they decided to turn their morning chats into the podcast Breakfast with Sis. “My dad is my biggest inspiration and my mentor,” says Alli. “Our conversations have shaped my business into what it is today, and I love sharing that.” When she has a spare minute (and it’s hard to believe she ever does!), you can find her at home with her high school sweetheart and husband Landon and their two cats. But whether at work or at rest, Alli’s grateful for the way her life continues to evolve. She says, “Knowing that people all over the world have bought a book or listened to the podcast and been inspired, that keeps me motivated.”

Some of the prints were inspired by her hand-painted murals, like Be You, which was her first painted mural. Others were inspired by her favorite life lessons, like the moon phases that remind her to not stress about making a new phase better than the next, just as long as it is new. 6

Lately I’ve felt the need for calm and serenity. Cool blues and soft seafoam and minty greens give me the mindset for relaxation after a full day. Just a vase with romantic blooms to bring some beauty into the room, to remind me of the breeze from a cottage garden filled with butterflies. In my Cottage Bleu collection, I was thinking of the things that make my space feel special and serene. I was drawn to the calming feeling of blues, from the light shades of sky to the deep navy night, mixed with those big blue blooms. Emerging buds come with soft greens and deep emerald leaves. This hydrangea line, joined with fluttering butterflies, celebrates those blues and greens and citrusy yellows with creamy whites. When designing patterns for this group, I was influenced by decorating my home to create spaces that bring me comfort and encourage moments of slowing down. I hope you find calm, serenity and beauty in this collection and can escape for a visit to Cottage Bleu.

I created this line of fabrics with one thought in mind… having a Sunshine Soul means you radiate positivity like the rays of the sun and, in turn, you light up those who surround you. You more easily find peace in your mind and body when you let your light shine! Remember, if you are shining light on another, you cannot keep that light from yourself. I strive to be a Sunshine Soul each day. I wanted to create fabrics that emote that feeling and share the beauty of this world’s sunlight as well. Sunshine Soul has beautiful sunrise and sunset colors that cast a peaceful glow upon the colors around it. I have glinting bits of gold and copper throughout to reflect the sun’s radiance. I focused on flowers - of course! - but added my beloved butterflies because they are both lovers of sunshine! I hope Sunshine Soul inspires you to create something for the sheer joy of the process, and maybe share that joy and light with another.

APRIL DELIVERY There is something sacred about being in the mountains. Walk along the misty trail and fall in love with colors intensified by an overcast sky. In my desert home, much of the earth is framed with rust colored mountains and majestic stone cliffs. Some have been brushed with strokes of charcoal to match the richness of the lava fields. Autumn often arrives late, and if you’re lucky, you may get a glimpse of a drying leaf with the lightest dusting of snow. The birds flying through the mist are silent‌ like me, they feel the reverence of being in such a mesmerizing place. Nature has many kinds of beauty; the Smoke & Rust collection evokes the colors and textures of my beloved home, and is designed for masculine and modern tastes alike.

I love colour. All colours. I don’t discriminate, I use them all. But there are times when I just need a change, when using more neutrals feels right. These black, grey and ivory tones play beautifully on their own, or they will compliment anything you care to mix them with. Lollies are about choices, having eight prints in a single width of fabric. They make scrappy easy. The Wovens are buttery soft, suited for applique and piecing, and they add texture to any kind of project.

Tochi means earth or land in Japanese, and it truly is a beautiful land. Outside of the busy cities there are mountainsides with terraced rows of tea bushes, fields of indigo, and gorgeous bamboo forests. Surrounding each of the islands that make up Japan are the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan and the East China Sea. I was thinking about and remembering Japan in so many ways when I was stitching and creating the new Shibori designs. 38

MARCH DELIVERY As a kid, I spent many lazy, summer days fishing, swimming, and catching frogs at our family pond. Mom made our favorites for Sunday afternoon picnics and sometimes, there were overnight adventures with a campfire, roasting hot dogs and making s’mores. What’s funny is that my Mom doesn’t like the outdoors – the bugs, the heat, the wind. So, Dad built a small cabin with bunk beds, an attached screened porch with a picnic table, and a fishing deck over the pond. That suited Mom’s version of roughing it. Some of my happiest childhood memories were at “the cabin”, and I dreamed of living there when I grew up. Thankfully, I married someone who embraced my dream, and we built our own “cabin” almost twelve years ago amidst the wheat fields and prairie grass, just up the hill from the pond. I love sleeping with the windows open, listening to the bullfrogs at night, waking to the birds singing in the morning. I enjoy watching our grandkids fish and catch frogs, just as I did as a kid. We still have campfires with s’mores on cool evenings, watching the wildlife as they carefully watch us. This year, we’re adding a new studio onto the cabin. It’s the perfect place to design fabric and quilts, inspired by nature and childhood prairie dreams.

by Barbara Brackman Ladies’ Legacy celebrates a dynamic alliance in New York City in the 1860s. Period prints are drawn from a quilt stitched for a Union soldier's hospital bed but never delivered. Each calico recalls a volunteer who spent the war years in the Woman's Central Relief offices, keeping accounts of donations, shipping crates and barrels to hospitals, quilting in the attic and firing up the patriotic public to donate 34,000 quilts and blankets sent out from their Greenwich Village office. Our inspiration quilt, narrow to fit a patient's bed, is signed "School of Design, Engraving Class, Cooper Union" indicating it was made by women learning to be magazine illustrators in the art school, still thriving today. Engraving teacher Miss Field encouraged the ladies to spend each afternoon stitching bedquilts to send down to the soldiers' relief agency on the school's first floor. One of only about 20 survivors of the thousands of quilts made to comfort soldiers, the sampler's fabrics provide traditional design for our Reproduction scrapbags. This collection will benefit the Quilt Research Center at the University of Nebraska Libraries Special Collection. ISE 242 Squared Away 80" x 72"

APRIL DELIVERY Born on Nantucket in 1818, Maria Mitchell’s father was a schoolteacher and amateur astronomer who passed on his love of watching the night sky, teaching his young daughter how to use astronomical instruments. After showing a keen interest and talent for mathematics and astronomy in school, Maria was fifteen when she discovered a comet using a refracting telescope. Named Miss Mitchell’s Comet, she received international recognition, was awarded a gold medal by the King of Denmark, and was recognized by the Seneca Falls Convention. She became a teacher of math and astronomy, and was an active suffragette and anti-slavery activist. Maria was appointed a professor at Vassar College in 1865, continuing her life-long support for women’s studies in math and science.

MEET MODA'S NEW DESIGNER, JACKIE OF SWEETFIRE ROAD Jackie MacDonald is all about making home a pleasant place to be. Her love of interior design was cemented while working as a merchandiser and buyer for catalog companies that featured cozy home décor and children’s toys. But her interest in sprucing up homes started years before, when she’d decorate shoebox houses for her mom and her grandmother. “My grandmother worked in domestics in a store called Nichols in Winchester, Virgina, and her job included working behind the fabric counter,” says Jackie, who fondly remembers the book of cloth swatches her grandmother brought home from work. “I would ‘take orders.’ I loved the touch and feel of textiles and I loved color, too, and also played with paint chips.” That interest in color and fabric comes to fruition in Break of Day, her first line of fabrics for Moda. Its poultry and floral imagery is a nod to her greatgrandparents’ farm, which Jackie loved to visit. “There was something about being there and being surrounded by trusty, well-worn things that resonated with me,” she says. “I’m very sentimental and when I’m designing I start with a feeling I want to evoke. I try to sit with an emotion or memory—it might be a scent or flora or fauna—and share that.” She’s also inspired by the self-sufficiency of farm families, who grew their own food, built sheds and barns, and sewed clothing, curtains, and quilts. In college, Jackie majored in Family and Consumer Sciences (also known as home economics), which enhanced her self-reliance. “Home economics has been key throughout my whole life and career,” she says. “I think it’s magic to have the knowledge to create your own and to be independent.”
husband and 7-year-old son Sammy. It was in Maine that she changed the direction of her life, leaving sourcing and product development work to pursue her own ambitions. An immersion course with Bonnie Christine helped her marry the skills she’d learned managing artists and artwork with her aspiration to create products that make people feel warm and welcome at home. The result is her design business, which she named Sweetfire Road. “Sweet is for being kind always; Fire is about passion, determination, and resilience; and Road is about the road that leads us home, and the deep, happy sigh I experience when I’m home again,” she says. That home features a well-worn color palette and an appreciation for memories. “If it’s old and tells a story, I’m going to love it,” says Jackie. “Shades of green, blue, red and cream? I’m going to buy as much as I can. Ours is a story-telling house where I have old things and sturdy things all mixed together. We’re currently looking for a farmhouse but it’s challenging; Maine has the oldest housing market in the U.S. We’ve seen many places that were built in the 1800s and even a couple from the 1700s!” No matter where they wind up, you can be sure that Jackie’s home will reflect an aesthetic that mingles nostalgia with a sense of wonder. “My husband teases that I have two sides: Dolly Parton and Stevie Nicks. One side loves sentimental, country farm house simplicity and the other side appreciates magic and stories,” she says with a laugh. “In my work those two sides combine and I hope it brings something fresh and comfortable.”

by Sweetwater Our design process for this collection started like any other - sitting around the kitchen table with a stack of magazines looking for a spark of inspiration. It’s usually a color, a phrase or maybe just a word. One of us spotted the phrase “Spring Chicken”. We had a good laugh and went back to the magazines. About an hour went by and we still were laughing about “Spring Chicken”- it had stuck in our heads. We quickly sketched out a cute little chicken and we had our theme. Spring Chicken was here to stay! In reality, the collection is more about Spring than it is about the chicken - although the chicken is pretty cute.
