HARMONY AND BALANCE ON THE LAKE

Layton Campbell of J Layton Interiors clients moved from Houston to The Point on Lake Norman, NC. The move brought them closer to family on the east coast and provided them an opportunity to build their dream home. It was important to them to create a home that would

entertain large family and friend gatherings. At 12,000 sq ft,with the architecture designed to open completely to outdoor lakefront living, the challenge was to make one feel enveloped while maintaining the fluid space and serenity.

“We began our journey for this project in late 2017. It has been over a two year process that was focused on making the dwelling and lake blend as one. This connection was key to all design decisions whether it was bringing in the soft colors of the water or playing with textures that create a sense of calm and interest. I have loved working with these clients and their dedication to making every detail perfect for their home and lifestyle.” said Layton Campbell who has enjoyed over 20 years in the design business since he opened in 2004.

“I enjoy working in various design styles and always joke that I live vicariously through all my clients.” Layton is fortunate to travel to the most wonderful places creating homes with his clients. As I had a chance to catch up with him in-between clients trips from Figure 8 Island and Nantucket.

“Ultimately I want harmony and balance between environment, architecture and client. Contrasts are key to achieving this idea. Light to dark, cozy to openness. Elegant and casual living. It's all balance.”

The clients on the Lake Norman project have an extensive art collection that takes center stage throughout most of the home. Upon entering the custom steel doors in the foyer one realizes that

art is taking precedence with the eye popping Rebecca Ward acrylic on stitched canvas hanging above the Bolier bench. Jim Thompson sheers add softness to the space. Art shapes the tone of each area from the incredible textural Martin Kline piece hanging in the dining room to the delicate work of Valeria Nascimento (porcelain in perspex case) in the upstairs vestibule. They each complement the architecture and finishes that surround.

Campbell added Phillip Jeffries hand crafted "Beyond" mural to bring life to the expansive niche in the master suite. The abstract pattern and colors echo the soft water just beyond the balcony doors. Smoky mirrors behind the beside lamps are by Made Goods. The Chiseled metal frame bench anchoring the bed in embossed leather is custom through Ambella Home.

Hand dipped ombre sheers by Rosemary Haligarten frame the view of the all seasons outdoor shower and tie in the charcoal vein

ing from the surrounding marble.

In the living room Campbell designed the large walnut veneer and acrylic cocktail table to anchor the gracious size of the room and bring the conversation pieces together. A handmade mosaic art piece by Ann Gardner on a curved metal frame reflects the glistening water. Campbell also designed the large custom area rug with Stark using three subtle tones that tie back once again to the watery hues.

Michael Berman barstools saddle up to the indoor/outdoor bar connecting folks directly to the lovely lake view. A Holly Hunt dining table and Janus et Cie chairs offer a casual din

ing experience in the all seasons room. Handknot abstract rug by Stark. A Rudin swivel chair allows the occupant to enjoy inside and out views.

A Dusty Griffith art piece from Anne Neilson Gallery sings above a bone console table just beyond the entryway.

Phillip Jeffries "Boucle" wallcovering and original art by Mary Janacek add depth and warmth to compliment the custom marble topped vanity.

Campbell created an outdoor oasis with Janus et Cie lounging and dining pieces. Using neutral tones blending seamlessly so nothing takes away from the beautiful water views. Cohesively achieving the harmony and balance throughout the home.
