EDITOR’S LETTER

Home is not a place, it’s a feeling. This rings true in the beautiful cover feature by Lisa Sherry Interiors. Where soulful touches, restorative colors, and organic textures create the foundation. The past few years have seen immense growth and evolution of design. Our home section features two incredible projects. Imitations of Nature by Lisa Sherry, and the second under the vision of Amy Lee of Artistic Interiors. Amy takes you on a journey From the Old World to the New on page 66 with a complete home transformation. Her design engages and inspires.

We had the opportunity to dine at Benoit NYC, a contemporary French bistro by Alain Ducasse. Since our culinary culture is much more than just the restaurant but the Chef, we were able to visit with Benoit’s Chef Alberto Marcolongo in The Chef’s Table on page 106. We travel from exploring the streets of New York to exploring the cobblestone streets of Dubrovnik on page 97 in our Escape section.

As the sun colors flowers, it is said art colors life. A must read about two amazing women Michel Van Devender and Natalie Papier, two remarkable designers who push the boundaries of art and design on page 84.

Modern Alchemists on page 92 shares the unwavering strength of the Ukrainian people. It is truly amazing during the country’s horrible war that the Ukrainian furniture makers forge forward with production inspiring hope as the country fights for freedom.

With so much more from the Wellness section to the Notes section, I hope you enjoy this issue. Happy reading.

The Most Chic Boat of All Time THE RIVA AQUARAMA

For me, the Riva Aquarama is simply one of the most beautiful things I own. It will never go out of style because it is a work of art created by a genius. Like the works that remain over time and in our memory, it amazes me every time because it proves that man’s craftsmanship can produce stunning masterpieces that, in turn, forge the aesthetic soul of those who admire them,” states Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, which now owns iconic Italian boatbuilder Riva.

“When I first arrived at Ferretti Group, I thought again about magic and destiny, as if my Aquarama had carried me here down a bewitched and mysterious stream. In fact, in the kaleidoscope of feelings I have for my boat, there is also the reverence you feel when facing those phenomena that you can perceive with your senses but cannot rationally explain. For me, it is heart, passion, faith!”

“No other boat has enjoyed the Aquarama’s elevated brand status,” notes the publisher. “Movie stars like Sophia Loren, Brigitte Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor and a coterie of aristocrats—including the royal family of Monaco and the Shah of Iran—were among the first to acquire it, which added to the mystique in the public’s eye. But most owners were high-net-worth individuals who were willing to buy an Aquarama for about the same price as a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud.”

Aston Martin

The past, present and future of Aston Martin is to be honoured through a year-long celebration of the iconic British brand’s 110th anniversary.

Sunday 15 January was exactly 110 years since founders Lionel Martin and Robert Bamford officially formed the partnership that went on to create the first Aston Martin car, igniting more than a century of automotive intensity, cutting-edge British innovation, and high-octane racing success.

Born on the track and inspired by its founders passion for racing, Aston Martin has risen from humble beginnings in a small workshop on Henniker Mews, London to become one of the

world’s most renowned automotive marques, synonymous with inventive design, luxurious craftsmanship, thrilling performance and scarce exclusivity.

In photographs released to mark the anniversary, Aston Martin has brought together two of the most iconic and innovative models from its 110-year bloodline, highlighting the brand’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of performance and applying engineering from Grand Prix racing to the road.

One of the brand’s oldest surviving racing cars, the record-breaking 1923 racer Razor Blade is pictured alongside the uncompromising Aston Martin Valkyrie hypercar.

28 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

Ignites year-long celebration of 110th Anniversary

One of the earliest cars to be specifically designed with aerodynamics in mind, and propelled by an Aston Martin Grand Prix specification engine, the trailblazing Razor Blade took numerous class records at Brooklands in 1923, a year on from Aston Martin’s Grand Prix debut with TT1 – the car nicknamed 'Green Pea.' A century later, Aston Martin continues to innovate with its thrilling high-performance models, bringing modern Formula One™ engineering to the road through its era-defining Aston Martin Valkyrie.

The brand’s historic 110th anniversary is to be celebrated through the launch of a new, strictly limited, exclusive Aston Mar-

tin model, to be unveiled later this year. The milestone will also take centre stage of this year ’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Goodwood Festival of Speed, Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance and other major events across Aston Martin’s key regions, as part of a global marketing campaign entitled ‘Intensity: 110 Years in the Making.’

Two thousand twenty-three promises to be a monumental year, as Aston Martin prepares to unleash the first of its highly anticipated next generation of sports cars, which will further enhance Aston Martin’s focus on ultra-luxury, high-performance and driving intensity.

Carolina’s

Mystic Farm & Distillery announces the launch of Mystic Galactic, the rarest spirit ever produced, a bourbon whiskey aged for one year in space.

Mystic plans to work with innovative companies like SpaceX, United Launch Alliance, Rocketlab, Inversion Space, Firefly, and Bank of America, as well as the skilled coopers at the West Virginia Great Barrel Co. to finance, design, test and build vessels to send five barrels of 45% wheat bourbon whiskey to Low Earth Orbit for one year of additional aging.

The barrels for space aging will be selected from Mystic’s stock that is at least three years old. Mystic makes award-winning bourbon, crafted from the North Carolina Piedmont’s superior grain, water and aging climate. Mystic has pioneered the field to glass movement in North Carolina and beyond, winning two consecutive gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2021 and 2022. The barrels will be re-coopered by the West Virginia Great Barrel Company, with special features designed to survive the rigors of launch, orbit and re-entry.

“We’re redefining what it means to make a rare spirit,” said Jonathan Blitz, co-owner of Mystic. “Only about 1,300 people on the planet will ever have the opportunity to taste and own this piece of whiskey history. It’s the height of luxury and exclusivity, not to mention the first commercial product manufactured in space.”

Most of the bottles will be presold for a $75,000 purchase deposit. Each purchaser will receive a nonfungible token (NFT) to prove authenticity and their right to ownership, and the purchase deposits will be held in an FDIC-insured account until the bourbon returns to earth for bottling. Mystic is planning to provide the bottles for

pickup at the distillery. Remaining bottles will be sold at a market price after pre-orders are fulfilled.

Purchasers will have exclusive access to an app that displays real-time mission data, as well as admission to exclusive launch and reentry parties. The hand-crafted glass and machined aluminum bottles will be packed into a custom fitted aluminum flight case with a piece of the actual oak barrel that flew in space. Purchasers will also get a 50ml sample of the bourbon, so owners won’t have to break the seal on their bottle of Mystic Galactic to taste the rarest spirit in the solar system.

“The space barrels will be retrieved and returned to Mystic after reentry, putting North Carolina on the map as an innovative producer of ultra-premium bourbon whiskey,” said Zack Hawkins, North Carolina State Representative (Durham). “This is an excellent example of the world-class products being made in our state and how we’re leading the way for the future.”

Mystic launched in 2013 with their first product, Mystic Bourbon Liqueur, a unique blend of bourbon, wildflower honey and spices. A woman owned business, Mystic now operates the largest solar powered bourbon distillery in the world. Boasting the highest-rated distillery tours in North America, Mystic is proud to craft the Piedmont’s superior grain, water and aging climate into world-class spirits such as: Mystic Bourbon Liqueur, Heart of Mystic Bourbon, Mystic 57 Navy Strength Gin, Soul of Mystic Unaged Spirit, and Broken Oak Double-Barreled Whiskey.

The Power of Food Finding Our Power in the Kitchen

Dear Marci,

I want to spend more time cooking at home with my family. We have been extra stressed this year and I think if we eat healthier it could help us feel better and even get along better.

Does it really matter?

Hoping for Harmony

Dear Hoping for Harmony,

Imay be biased, but the kitchen is my favorite room in the house, so yes, of course it matters! Actually when I was a little girl my mother used to tell everyone she couldn’t keep me out of the kitchen; I just loved being there, with all the people, all the celebrations, and, of course, all the food.

But when you grow up in a big Italian family you figure out really quickly the kitchen is where all the excitement is, and our kitchen was the hub of everything wonderful. It is where we shared meals, and secrets, and yes, even where we sometimes fought, but it was always the place we connected, nurtured and loved.

So today when people ask me what’s so special about the kitchen, I tell them, “the kitchen is where all the power is,” and the science backs me up on this one too.

Much of the latest research points to more time in the kitchen, cooking with family and friends, results in improved relationships, better mental health, and even less depression and anxiety. Cooking is the kitchen is one of the best ways to improve emotional well-being, feel connected, and find a sense of belonging and purpose. Cooking with others, and for others, really does matter. And when the foods we choose to cook is of better nutritional quality we find the perfect harmony of body and mind. I know about this all too well.

When my daughter, Rachel, was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia at only two years old, I brought all my children into the kitchen, quite literally. Because Rachel’s treatment required a bone marrow transplant, her immune system was weakened, and she needed to be kept away from social situations with large groups of people and a myriad of germs. Confined to our home, with three small children, the only safe place for us to go, was the kitchen.

As I was keeping Rachel away from the germs that could make her sick, I also knew I needed to make her stronger to fight the ones that might find the way into her little body anyway, and then I turned to healthier foods. I started doing research to find out which foods would make all of us stronger, healthier, and even help us recover from all the stress and trauma.

I soon discovered there are some foods that are better than others for this. Foods that are clean, whole, and unprocessed should be the foundation of our daily intake, and healthy fats, plant based, and protein are all super important when it comes to healing, recovery, and overall power. Organic foods with no pesticides, chemicals and additives, and foods with more phytonutrients, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties work best for immune health, gut health, and physical and mental health.

So the girls and I started creating recipes using some of the most powerful foods, in the most powerful room in the house, and we got healthier, and happier, and we survived. We also had a lot of amazing dinners. One of our favorite recipes to make was this Super Veggie Bolognese.

The synergistic effects of these ingredients work together to enhance the flavors and health benefits and make the old saying, “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts” ring true.

By combining ingredients like tomatoes, carrots, and olive oil we are able to absorb more of the vitamin A and lycopene. Or when we combine the turmeric in my superpower mirepoix with the black pepper and olive oil, the piperine, a phytonutrient in black pepper, and the healthy fats in olive oil, enhance the uptake of the curcumin.

And when all of this combines with the experience of cooking in the kitchen, well that’s where the real magic happens. The benefits become immeasurable and I can guarantee, you and your family will feel better, get along better, and very soon notice a significant improvement in the quality of your lives. After all, the most dramatic transformations happen in the kitchen. So get in there with your family and friends and start cooking up more health and happiness.

This recipe is enough for a crowd so be sure to invite everyone you love

SUPER VEGGIE BOLOGNESE

• ¼ cup olive oil

• 3 cups, baby spinach

• 3 cups mushrooms, diced

• 2 cups butter nut squash, diced in small chunks

• 2 cups brussel sprouts, shaved

• 2 cups broccoli, chopped

• 3 carrots diced small

• 3 shallots, diced

• 1/4 cup superpower mirepoix (see recipe below)

• 1/2 cup parsley, minced or I like to cut herbs with herb scissors

• 3 cups veggie broth

• 3 cups red wine

• 4 16 ounces of San Marzano tomatoes (whole peeled with juice)

• 3 TBS. tomato paste

• 1 cup pasta water (or as needed)

• 1 TBS. fresh thyme, tender leaves stripped from woody stalks

• 1 TBS. fresh rosemary, chopped

• 1 TBS. fresh oregano, chopped

• 4 bay leaves

• sea salt and freshly ground pepper to taste

Season all the veggies, including my superpower mirepoix, with salt and pepper and a little olive oil and mix in a large bowl. I use a large sauce pan and sauté the veggies until semi soft and onions are translucent. Add the canned whole tomatoes; crushing the whole tomatoes with your fingers or if that is too gross for you, use a utensil. Then add spices, tomato paste, veggie broth and salt and pepper. Cook on a slow simmer for about 30 minutes until veggies are tender.

The sauce is intended to be thick yet if it is too thick save some of the pasta water when you cook the pasta and add a little pasta water to thin it out, as needed. Remove bay leaves and season with salt and pepper. Serve over your favorite pasta although because it is a hearty sauce please use a sturdy pasta; I like rigatoni best. Sprinkle with freshly grated parm and crushed red pepper flakes, as desired.

This is a makes a large batch of sauce so don’t forget to invite me over for dinner! I will bring the wine and more power.

SMALL BATCH OF MY SUPERPOWER MIREPOIX

• 10 cloves of garlic

• ½ of a large root of ginger

• 2 large roots turmeric

Peel the garlic, and ginger root, you don’t need to peel the turmeric root. Most of the benefits come from breaking down the cell wall of these ingredients so feel free to use a garlic press for the garlic and then chop the ginger root and turmeric root by hand, or throw everything in a food processor and pulse until finely diced. This will make a small batch and you can store it in the refrigerator up to 5 days to use in sauce, soups, salad dressing, or anything and everything!

Dr. Kathleen MinnickFlorida Breast Surgical Oncology Specialist

“Accusyte™ 3-D Fiducial Marking System”

Dr. Kathleen Minnick is a respected specialist in her field who has been operating for more than a quarter of a century. Her commitment to the work she gets to do is ever-present. She frequently expresses her feeling of gratitude for doing this work. The doctor shares, “I am humbled to be entrusted with something as precious as the patient’s health and well-being, especially at a time when the patient is so vulnerable.” From her office in South Florida, and the hospitals she is associated with in the region, Dr. Minnick continues to help her patients by combining decades of experience and utilization of new technologies.

Whether you are a surgeon, a physician’s assistant, a nurse, or a patient, it is an exciting time in the world of medicine. Cutting-edge technologies are continually being introduced into the market, providing encouragement to those with a new diagnosis of breast cancer. The standard of care for the majority of those with newly diagnosed early-stage breast cancer is a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy. All of those patients will need some form of radiation treatment in addition to their surgery. It has been a challenge to accurately mark the cavity due to the dynamics of the breast tissue. Accusyte™ 3-D Fiducial Marking System

is changing that. Accusyte is an elegant solution to marking the cavity bed and provides the Oncoplastic breast surgeon the flexibility to mark the tumor bed regardless of its location. Accusyte™ 3-D Fiducial Markers cannot be felt by the patient and will not migrate from where they are placed. The fiducial markers will also provide a tool for long-term follow-up on subsequent imaging, including mammograms. What is remarkable is the simplicity of securing the markers during the lumpectomy and the ease of targetability for radiation treatment. Just as a GPS device will pinpoint your exact location in the middle of the ocean, Accusyte™ 3-D Fiducial Marking System pinpoints the exact location of the lumpectomy site allowing for precise delivery of radiation treatment. For patients and surgeons alike, there is comfort and confidence in using this precise application. And it is another tool Dr. Minnick adds to improve the quality of the breast cancer patients’ experience.

Working with knowledgeable, committed colleagues who continually push for excellence inspires Dr. Minnick, who continues to strive to improve patient care. Accusyte™ 3-D Fiducial Marking System is a tool Dr. Minnick and surgeons like her use to do just that. “And the zest, strength, and love of life of my patients inspire me to be my best.”

The “UglyTruth” About the Skincare Industry

The unimaginable explosion of celebrity skincare brands and “garage gurus” offering skincare products promising to have the magic ingredient to make us look younger, have healthier skin, lose weight, and even eliminate any gray hair has made it challenging for those of us seeking an evidence-based approach to skincare.

The preponderance of consumer misinformation in the cosmetics/skincare industry has been a concern of mine for many years. I first posted my concerns in 2019, when I began to see the increase of questionable beauty advice being found on social media and endorsed by so called experts and influencers. This extraordinary acceleration of beauty influencers has created an industry of paid and unpaid “professionals” promoting inferior and possibly even dangerous skincare products to an ever-growing audience of unsuspecting consumers.

Most skincare products fall under the category of cosmetics and unfortunately the FDA does not investigate or test the safety of cosmetic products before they are offered for sale to the public. In fact, over 80% of the ingredients in beauty care products have not been tested for safety or efficacy. We have also seen social media embracing the concept of alternative truths, blurring the boundaries between truth and lies, facts and outright falsehoods. We see quite a bit of misinformation to the consumer in the anti-aging and contact dermatitis categories, where many unproven therapies and ineffective products are being offered.

50 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

AVOID THE NOISE

Since skincare has been the focus of our Company since 1871, we are particularly concerned about what makes a safe and effective skincare product. Just because a new type of skincare treatment is trending on social media does not mean it is the answer to your skincare concerns. We have seen many skincare fads come and go in our 150+ years of researching skin and have learned to treat any new skin treatment trends with caution. For example, the discovery of radium by Marie and Pierre Curie was remarkable, putting a radioactive ingredient in a skincare product didn’t make for a safe skin treatment as some beauty companies in the turn of the century wanted you to believe.

NOT ALL INGREDIENTS ARE EQUAL

We know now that your skin is the body’s largest organ, providing the main barrier protection to your other organs from the outside world. When any substances come in contact with your skin they can be absorbed into your bloodstream. In fact, more than half of what is applied to your skin is absorbed into your body. Therefore, it is very important that you be aware of what you are applying to your skin. One of the biggest areas of concern is with the preservatives used in moisturizing and cleansing products. Perhaps the most dangerous of all ingredients are in the fragrances because they are considered “trade secrets” and ingredients are often not listed on the label. We prefer products that do not contain any fragrances.

THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR SCIENCE

There is no substitute for scientific knowledge and the understanding of how skin functions when developing products for use in proper skin maintenance and treating adverse skin conditions. Research is time consuming, expensive, and necessary when developing products that will be used for healing and protecting the skin.

Our Company was founded by a medic over a hundred and fifty years ago. We were among the first to introduce antiseptic products in 1871. We have been focusing on science and the study of the human microbiome for decades now, and our products are clinically evaluated to ensure their safety and efficacy before they are ever offered for sale to the public.

All our products are manufactured in the United States under strict good manufacturing guidelines. Our formulations are proprietary, and we do not engage any “off the shelf” standardized formulas created by contract packagers as some beauty companies are doing these days.

Finally, we do not have a single “magic” ingredient which will make you look younger, thinner and more beautiful. No one does. What we (Columbia Skincare) do offer our customers is a scientifically developed microbiome friendly line of skincare products which are gender neutral, safe to use on all skin types with a formulation of natural ingredients that work in harmony with the human body to improve the quality and health of your skin.

A BEAUTY REBOOT

SHED WINTER DULLNESS WITH A SELECTION OF BRIGHTENING LASERS AND TREATMENTS AT H/K/B COSMETIC SURGERY IN THE HEART OF CHARLOTTE.

“I provide all services from skincare consultations to Botox and fillers. My personal favorite is incorporating lasers to improve the skin’s texture and tone. A C02 or Erbium laser is great for not only correcting the sun pigment damage, but it can actually turn back time by reducing fine lines, wrinkles, and will somewhat contract the skin.”

- Shani Caviness, Physician Assistant, Certified (PA-C) at H/K/B Cosmetic Surgery

THE LOWDOWN

C02 Laser Resurfacing / This non-surgical procedure uses a carbon dioxide laser treatment to remove thin layers of skin, stimulate collagen, and targets deep sun damage, wrinkles, acne scarring, birthmarks, and more.

Erbium Laser Resurfacing / Unlike its counterpart, this procedure is a bit more superficial. It is not as irritating for those with sensitive skin, and treats fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and mild scarring with minimal recovery time.

DOWNTIME

Recovery for both treatments typically lasts one week or less. Some residual redness may extend for another one to two weeks, which can be covered with makeup.

DISCLAIMERS

Laser treatments are best suited for lighter skin colors to a light olive. Deeper tones will find optimal results with peels or microneedling.

SHANI’S BEST BEAUTY TIP FOR THE SPRING

“Always wear sunscreen to protect your skin. No matter the season or weather, invest in good sunscreen. I recommend Intellishade because it has SPF 45 and you can opt for the tinted version to give a bit of coverage and glow.”

GLOW UP THE HYDRAFACIAL

“If a quick fix is needed for a spring wedding or gathering, this is a great option. It works to remove dry, dull skin and then infuse moisture back into the skin. This is helpful as our skin dries out in the winter from the heat in our homes and the lack of moisture in the air. It can be used on the face only, or added to the neck and chest for an even look. It’s perfect for all skin types.”

MICRONEEDLING

“This is ideal any time of the year for the face, neck, and chest. It is an excellent option to stimulate collagen and can be used on a person of any age, with any skin color. I recommend a series of three or more. It does take 90 days to regenerate collagen, so this will not be an immediate improvement. Also, as we age, we produce less collagen—so the more treatments the better.”

Imitations Of Nature

SOULFUL TOUCHES, RESTORATIVE COLORS, AND ORGANIC TEXTURES CREATE THE FOUNDATION FOR LISA SHERRY’S NEWEST HOME REIMAGINATION.

For the design alchemist, the “magic is in the mix”—whether in life or on project with the Lisa Sherry Interieurs team. Backed by five talented creatives and professionals, the designer and her full-service interior design studio take an earthy and lived-in approach to residential and commercial projects.

“My style is modern and organic, with classic touchpoints that make my interiors timeless,” Principal Creative Director and Visionary Lisa Sherry says. “I choose neutral palettes with abundant texture over color. I love light. Interesting juxtapositions set my work apart, mixing periods, materials, and textures.”

Sherry’s latest project? A 2015 remodel that called for a reconceptualized interior to suit a busy family of five.

“We wanted to celebrate the grand architecture and bring it down to earth a bit to create a space that’s real, authentic, and in step with the day-to-day,” Sherry says. “And, of course, beautiful for my clients.”

Because the home already had strong bones from architect Ruard Veltman’s refresh, Sherry ventured down a design path that was “passionately neutral,” with earthy tones full of texture that appeal to all of the senses.

60 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com
www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 61

“Traditional and modern play off each other— essential to my mix,” Sherry says. “I believe that texture, rather than lots of colors, adds interest, soul, and authenticity to a space.”

As a self-proclaimed lover of light, the designer says that the soft glow created by floor-to-ceiling windows with tranquil garden views adds dimension to the home. No matter the angle, the residence is bathed in sunlight that spotlights the intricate detail in wood, stone, and glass materials.

“This is my second home with this accomplished young family of five,” Sherry says. “Design is very personal and it’s all about developing trust and relationships. I’ve watched the family grow and evolve. There’s a high level of trust, which allows me to do my best work. It shows in the space.”

Similar to her ever-growing relationships with her clients, the designer is a firm believer in the power of continuous learning.

“It’s a mindset,” Sherry says. “Rather than big ah-has and stop-the-world epiphanies, I learn something every day. That said, I have evolved so much personally and professionally as an interior designer.”

As for one of Sherry’s most freeing realizations throughout 18 years of owning a design studio: The ability to fully trust her instincts.

“My design aesthetic is modern and organic with quiet classic motifs, all expressed in a neutral palette with abundant texture and light,” Sherry says. “Today, clients come to me for this look and vibe. Being true to myself elevates my spaces and my practice. It’s very fulfilling.”

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE ASPECTS OF THIS HOME?

Seeing the transformation from the dated, old world lake home to a more functional, modern and vibrant lake home was truly exciting. I love every aspect of this home, but the study is one of my favorite rooms. The walls and custom cabinetry are painted black and accents of saddle brown and cream create a truly unique room that feels amazing to sit down in and have a drink or watch tv. The use of fun papers and patterns also brought a more fun, yet sophisticated aesthetic to the home.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THIS INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT? WAS THERE A THEME?

We were able to completely gut the majority of this home and give it a total transformation. At the beginning the goal or theme of the home was to create a modern, rustic aesthetic. With time and as the project unfolded, I started to bring in more specific design elements that really spoke to the personality of my clients. I was told “alcohol and fire” were best used to describe our fun loving, creative homeowners and with that bit of flare, the final design theme was created.

HOW DO YOU BEGIN THE DESIGN PROCESS?

All my projects begin by sitting down with the client and getting to know who they are and how they tick. I pride myself on being able to really get within my client’s psyche and not only see but feel what they’re hoping to achieve. The design layout, floor plan design and interior architecture details come next and from that a vision for the entire space begins to unfold.

WHAT DESIGN TRENDS ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR 2023?

A nod to more natural colors and materials with warmer colors and natural stones like marbles and limestones making a comeback. I’m also excited to see a strong trend

in furnishings with a geometric spin, lots of new concepts that I’ve never seen hit the market before, or reinvented styles from the 60s and 70s that bring character and flair into a space.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE YOUR OWN DIVERSE STYLE WITH THAT OF THE CLIENTS?

My client’s style lays the foundation for the design project. Rather than having one “look” I enjoy creating unique and diverse designs for each of my clients. While all my projects have a simple, yet sophisticated theme to them, they’re all custom tailored to the client. This keeps my job fun and exciting and I’m never bored creating the same look repeatedly.

CULTURE

MUSEUMS, MASTERPIECES AND MELODIES.

pg. #76 Navigating Attraction and Repulsion with artist Dam Lam.

Navigating attraction and repulsion, artist Dan Lam explores dichotomies

Instagram sensation Dan Lam’s tactile technicolor sculptures use unconventional materials to playfully yet thoughtfully explore the space between allure and repulsion. Dan Lam’s work straddles the often uncomfortable line between numerous dichotomies. Typically, most people are uncomfortable with dichotomies. They prefer to be sure of what they know and then go with what is known. But Lam relishes exploring and navigating the realm between attraction and repulsion, organic and inanimate, seriousness and playfulness, soft and hard. It is through this study of opposites that Lam conjures her idiosyncratic vision and, as a result, her work strikes a balance between seemingly disparate concepts inspiring a range of emotions and ideas from the viewer.

Inspired by the great luminaries, light artists James Turrell and Olafur Eliason, Lam is known for her bright, bold, and unique sculptures. Her icons’ work seek to make the viewers not passive observers but active participants. Turrell famously describes the experience as “seeing yourself see.”

For Lam, touching is seeing. Lam’s active state is both visual and tactile. Lam says, “Touch is really important for me. Before I started putting all my stuff online, people would come into my studio and would immediately start reaching out to touch things—the curiosity was just coming through their fingers. I love that! There’s something exciting about creating something that others just have to touch, it ties in with childlike wonder. When kids are learning and discovering they have to touch everything.”

76 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com
www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 77
78 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com
www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 79

Lam’s eye-catching sculptures are made of painted polyurethane foam and often covered in spikes. Her blob-like pieces appear to melt and drip. Lam has always been interested in exploring the possibilities inherent in materials. In her undergraduate work, she started to play with different materials and discovered that she was drawn to how the materials acted and had their own unique properties. She was determined to embrace the material for what it was and wanted to explore soft sculptures and bright colors.

Understanding that historically humans are attracted to beautiful things, Lam started drawing associations with what beauty meant to the self and to the world. Lam concluded that beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder yet found that if she pushed the boundaries of beauty,

it could tip into the realm of “ugly.” She gives examples of sweet candies which seem so delicious to start but given too much, they eventually make you sick. There is a line and Lam straddles the line and not only feels at home there but enjoys immensely. And, it shows.

Lam’s work is made for social media with its bright colors and grotesque shapes. But Lam also embraces social media as an authentic way to connect with her fans. “On social media, I get messages that feel authentic so I can have a very honest back and forth with them.”

Lam designs are as an intention and an expression. The artist’s intention and expression are authentic and very clear, And, clearly many agree and want more! @sopopomo

Black White & Color all Over

Two Charlotte designers and their affinity for art, design, creative exploration, and color - in all its forms.

In an era of beige houses, eclectic and art-filled spaces are becoming increasingly rare. Homes that push the boundaries are a specialty for interior designers Michel Van Devender and Natalie Papier, who take distinct approaches to design and color play—one with a proclivity towards black and white, and the other a rainbow of vibrancy. But there’s a common thread between the two: Being an absolute art addict.

“I’m an artist and a collector,” Van Devender says. “For me, art is an essential part of life and a powerful source of inspiration. Art breathes life into a space and tells a story about the home and the people who live there.”

The creative, who grew up in a family of artists, makers, and craftsmen, has a long history in design. Van Devender dabbled in the field until 2010 when she closed down her mental health private

84 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

practice to pursue designer positions and later co-create Millicent Design Studio. Even after stepping away from studio work, Van Devender is constantly sharpening her edge in contrasting design.

Her home—a black exterior with white interior walls—is an ode to her love for juxtaposition.

“Interestingly, in a previous life, I did a lot of color and patterns,” Van Devender says. “I mean a lot. Over time though, with the addition of each kid, and as my life became more and more chaotic, I started to crave something more grounding and

calming in my home environment.”

Sticking to a quiet space—literally and visually—is Van Devender’s sweet spot. In her home, the designer blends classic sophistication with unique textures, materials, art, music, and books.

“Recently I’ve been merging my experience and interests in human behavior, mental health, and interior design,” Van Devender says. “I liken it to therapy for your home. Black and white creates that respite for me. Black grounding, and white calming.”

But color means something different for everyone. For Papier, interior designer, trained painter, and entrepreneur extraordinaire, bright hues are her lifeblood.

“Color is my happy place,” Papier says. “I adore experimenting with it as an artist, using my own home as my canvas. Being surrounded by curated colors in our home brings us joy, and is our safe space to let our personalities shine. Color feels naturally authentic for me.”

After moving from Chicago to Charlotte in 2020, Papier and her husband toured 30 houses in three days before landing on a home with high ceilings, unique architecture, and a serious need for renovation. The designer, who grew up in a Victorian house surrounded by period charm and storied furniture, says she envisioned the home feeling like a gallery for her growing art collection. Papier documented the journey on her social channels, and after being noticed by a few local publications, her career took flight.

86 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

Having worked two jobs to pay for art school in college, Papier has a soft spot for burgeoning artists. She frequently uses her social media to make connections, share artist features, and run giveaways.

“The art world is tough and not always taken seriously when you start out,” Papier says. “I want them to know that I see that and I respect their dedication to their craft. There is so much talent out there and so much creativity that I myself am inspired by.”

It’s this open-minded view towards life and creativity

that has opened many unique avenues for the designer. With a successful show on Magnolia Network (Artfully Designed)—where Papier is featured alongside two of her color-loving artist friends—and a coffee table book on the way, the multi-hyphenate proves you don’t have to conform to make a big splash.

“I think the best thing about both of these experiences is just the validation that design doesn’t just need to fit into a specific kind of box,” Papier says. “It’s okay to be different. You shouldn’t be afraid to stand out.”

Harness The Art Of Your Home With Creative Feng Shui

CREATE HEALTHIER, HAPPIER HOMES THROUGH THE POWER OF CREATIVE FENG SHUI AND INTENTIONAL LIVING.

Do you want to attract positive energy into your home? Do you want to breathe new life into a living space? Or do you feel your house needs revitalizing and refreshing? The age-old Chinese system and principles of Feng Shui have you covered…

The spaces we inhabit affect the way we feel. With a few adjustments and intentional actions, it is possible to create our own powerful spaces at home, allowing us to: rest, restore, recharge, re-evaluate, replenish and rejuvenate.

Every day, I feel blessed to be able to help people through the power of Creative Feng Shui and Intentional Living, empowering them to create lives and homes filled with fortune, purpose, fulfillment and flow.

Our homes are a reflection of our energy, so it’s crucial that we take the time to focus on what matters in order for us to feel supported, healthier and happier in our environment. So, it’s important that we are conscious about the spaces and environments we spend the most of our time in, intentionally making sure they are serving us.

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 89

1. A Breath of Fresh Air - Each morning, ensure you give your home a breath of fresh air. Throw on a sweater and breathe new life into your home - open the windows and allow the fresh air and breeze to blow through and move any stagnant air, blowing any cobwebs away, even if it is just for 10 minutes each day this invites in a fresh flow of energy.

2. A Welcoming Scent - It’s really important to have a wonderful welcoming scent near your door as you arrive home – a scent infused diffuser can help you feel relaxed as soon as you unlock your front door. You can burn some lavender, pinewood incense, aromatherapy oil or a trusty scented candle to harness the power of your senses.

3. Think About the Role of Your Rooms and Set an Intention for It – Setting an intention for each room or dedicating a feeling to a room is so powerful. Ask yourself how you want the room to support you and how you want it to make you feel. By designating areas for various activities, you are subconsciously allowing yourself to move with ease and purpose within your home. For example; your bedroom should be restful, peaceful, supportive and loving, so ensure you don’t store dirty laundry in there or have too much clutter, which could leave you feeling anxious.

4. Intentional Artwork - Art is personal and we should be intentional when we are selecting pieces for our home and ensure that we not only love it, but that the pieces resonate with us too. It’s important to not cover too many walls with artwork, as this can block the flow of qi – take your time to consider the scale of your home and the space you are adding artwork to. Think about adding a mixture of sizes and frames… as this can bring a fresh energy and flow to the space. Be conscious of where you hang color - in the bedroom, I advise sticking to earthy tones, which are more grounding.

5. Let There be Light - Lighting can transform a space instantly. Both daylight and artificial light raises the level of chi (positive energy). It’s important to ensure light fittings and light bulbs are functioning fully. Pay attention to the front door, where you should aim to create a “bright hall effect” to provide a warm

welcome as you step inside. Create cozy spaces with ambient lighting and candles on an evening. You can also use ambient lighting to illuminate dark corners and create an even flow of chi, particularly in the living room, the kitchen and the home office.

6. Sound Energy - Sound energy comes from vibrations that travel through air, water, or any other type of matter producing sound waves. Creating pleasant sounds not only makes a space feel more harmonious, but it can also impact the chi energy. Music is super powerful at setting the tone – so, be intentional when choosing a playlist that suits your mood and enhances the vibe you are creating. Placing wind chimes outside the entrance of your home is a great way to cleanse energy as it flows through a space. In the north corners of your main living space (not your bedroom), many experts recommend placing a water feature to bring tranquility. If you can’t install a real water feature, place a speaker there and play a water inspired playlist or soundtrack.

7. Beautiful Tablescapes - Are a great way to introduce life into your home and bring nature indoors: Seasonal branches on a table, such as; quince branches, eucalyptus or lucky bamboo, a vase of flowers in your entrance hall or by your bedside, a bowl of seasonal fruits on the dining table, or a stack of logs by the fire – these are all perfect natural enhancements for your home–they add active chi and it will add new energy to the space. I don’t ever recommend artificial plants in a space, as they attract stagnant energy.

8. The Five Elements - Be conscious to try and bring in the five key elements of Feng Shui into your home: metal, wood, earth, water, and fire. Each element creates a different mood and an environment with all five elements feels calm and peaceful. If you have a space that doesn't feel quite right, try balancing the elements to make it more comfortable.

The strength of Ukrainian furniture makers persists, inspiring hope as the country and its allies fight for a free future.

Given the country’s current fight for freedom, purchasing furniture may seem an unconventional relief effort. However, many Ukrainian manufacturers are striving to continue their families—and in a broader sense, economic recovery and the future of post-conflict trade.

92 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

Mebus, a high-tech Ukrainian manufacturer specializing in upholstered furniture and living space sets has been greatly affected by the crisis.

“We lost roughly 40 percent of our revenue from the Ukrainian domestic market,” Mebus Business Development Director Igor Chipak says. “Even some of our most reliable international partners immediately stopped working with us when the war started. However, we are not stopping, and to the contrary, we have participated in three furniture exhibitions across Europe and have a new set of clients who believe in us and our products, and are great partners.”

The company’s spirit of determination has made them unstoppable against challenges, even those as difficult as a daily loss of power

“The electricity in Ukraine is an issue as we have about four to eight hours at any given day,” Chipak says. “We must work at night because we have contracts with our clients, and four hours of electricity during the daytime simply isn't enough.”

The business has purchased large-scale generators for the factory in order to maintain a reliable production line and meet deadlines for customers. While extremely costly, these generators have offered

“As an example, we have a tabletop that has a herringbone pattern, made out of various wood pieces,” Chipak says. “Our mastery lies in how we use veneer, similar to how veneer is applied to paintings in preservation at the Louvre museum in Paris. This way our clients can confidently pass our furniture down as a legacy from generation to generation.”

While Chipak has always viewed his role as a large responsibility, he says the war has added a new layer of pressure to the business’ daily operation.

Mebus the stability needed to support its hard-working employees.

“Our task is to keep our existing customers, but also to find new ones,” Chipak says. “Since our average employee’s age is 35, they all have small children. We need to work so that every family has an income. Additionally, some of our employees are fighting in the war and we try to help them as best as we can.”

Despite it all, Chipak says the company has focused on staying true to its original heritage and values—offering flexible manufacturing with a high quality and reasonable price.

“Our owner designs all of our collections,” Chipak says. “He is a fourth-generation furniture maker. At our office, we have the actual chisel that the great-grandfather of our owner used to first manufacture furniture in 1921. It is a very dear object for us.”

Chipak says the team creates anywhere from eight to 10 prototypes for each new collection. From there, they collectively vote on the best option before working to eliminate flaws and improve the line for up to 10 months. Because of its complex-to-produce furniture and affordable pricing, Chipak says the Mebus’ factory is renowned in Europe.

“Losing is not an option,” Chipak says. “Therefore, we need to show the world that we are continuing in manufacturing and that our economy is strong. We are strong people and we believe in our victory. We are hard workers and it shows through the products and furnishing that we continue to reliably produce.”

EPICUREAN ADVENTURE
pg. #106 The Chefs Table - Chef Alberto Marcolongo.

The Chef’s Table

I’ve heard it said if you want to go to Paris for lunch but cannot get there, go to Benoit in Midtown Manhattan instead. Benoit has all the beauty, esthetics, and charm of a Parisian bistro, and, with all the excitement, energy, and vibe of a New York state of mind, it’s difficult not to fall in love when you walk through the doors.

Benoit, part of the house of Alain Ducasse, the man who knows how to tell a story with his cuisine, his food a conduit to happiness, embraces us in all things hospitality, and if this is not

enough to steal your heart, Benoit offers something even more; Chef Alberto Marcolongo. There are many people who love food, yet when their love of food is combined with traditions, roots, and family, I think this is when the most passionate chefs are born. Chef Alberto is one of these people. His vision for food is to bring people together to celebrate life, and with every bite, he takes us on a gastronomical journey that transports us around the world and then back home again.

WHERE DOES YOUR FOOD STORY BEGIN?

I am from a big Italian family so my food story begins in the kitchen with my mother and grandmother. This is where I spent most of my childhood and where I fell in love with food. I learned how to make sauces and pasta and many classic Italian dishes. I always wanted to be around food.

When I was younger I saved my money for months to go to my first restaurant. The restaurant was Le Jules Verne, located inside the Eiffel Tower. At that time it was helmed by chef Pascal Feraud. And then I knew I wanted to be in the kitchen.

WHAT FOODS DID YOU EAT AS A CHILD?

Most of my food memories as a child are of time spent around the table with my family during Sunday lunch. I come from a large family, but every Sunday all of us would come together for lunch. It would be 20-25 of us and every house would bring a dish. Tortellini was always my favorite dish - and it honestly still is today. I have memories of learning to make them with my mother and grandmother, filling and folding pasta dough. I still use their technique and recipes today at Benoit.

108 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST FOOD MOMENT?

My proudest moment as a chef was when I was appointed Chef de Cuisine of FOO’D by chef Davide Oldani in 2016 in Singapore. For many of us who embark on a culinary career, it’s a dream to get to helm a kitchen, let alone one with prestige. It meant even more to me to receive the opportunity and recognition from one of my first mentors. And then, of course, when I was appointed Executive Chef at Benoit by Alain Ducasse. It makes me feel proud to work with great men who have a great love and respect for food.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FOOD AROMA?

My favorite aroma in the kitchen is the smell of fresh basil. I especially love a fragrant Pesto Genovese or the way the smell of basil fills the kitchen when added to a homemade tomato sauce. I used to have a large basil plant in my garden in Italy that was beautiful. And even though I can’t clip basil straight from the garden in my New York City apartment, the smell of cooking with basil takes me back to those days.

WHAT IS YOU FAVORITE INGREDIENT TO USE IN THE KITCHEN?

My favorite ingredient is piment d’espelette. It is made from chile peppers from France and Spain. I like to use the powdered form and add spice to my dishes, especially fish - and it’s great for adding more spice to my midnight pasta.

MIDNIGHT PASTA? IS THAT YOUR GO-TO DISH TO MAKE AT HOME?

Yes, I make this often at home. This recipe is a version of aglio e olio pasta, but with a bit more excitement. It is often known as midnight pasta because it can be made quickly with a few pantry staples: garlic, olive oil, red-pepper flakes, and I sometimes make it when you are out with friends and come home late and want something to eat.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION?

Inspiration comes from everywhere. I get inspired from traveling and visiting places, but you don’t have to go far. I can get inspiration from farm stands and food trucks but mostly inspiration comes from people.

My two mentors Alain Ducasse, and David Oldani have inspired me the most. It is with Davide Oldani, that I began my culinary career in his restaurant D’O in 2008 and remained there for 3 years. He is actually the person who introduced me to Chef Ducasse at Hotel de Paris, Monaco. These are two greats in the culinary world and always inspire me to do better with food and life.

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 109

OF COURSE, I HAVE TO ASK YOU MY FAVORITE QUESTION~ HEY CHEF, WHAT DOES YOUR TABLE LOOK LIKE?

Well, here in New York my table is a little smaller because all my family is back in Italy. Back home, my table is large, filled with lots of family, and food, and stories. Here in New York, my table is filled with good friends, and still lots of food and stories, but because I work so much, on my days off, I like to go out and try new restaurants so my table is in all different places. But no matter where my table is, it is always filled with people and love.

You can visit Chef Alberto Marcolongo at Benoit on 60 West 55th Street New York, NY 10019

Please visit anytime you want to find your way home with food.

WHAT DO YOU WANT US TO KNOW ABOUT BENOIT?

We recently rolled out our new pasta specials for lunch. It’s particularly special to me because not only is it inspired by my Italian heritage, but it’s also reflective of my style of cooking. We frequently change the pasta dish because we ultimately want to allow peak-season ingredients to shine and inspire the dish.

NAVIGATING
TO NEW VENTURES
pg. # 114 Mercedes SL63 4-Matic - pg. # 119 All Electric Performance, the Damon HyperSport.

The original racing car look: “Motorsport Collectors Edition.”

Mercedes - AMG is presenting a special model of the

SL 63 4Matic+

To mark the end of the 2022 Formula 1 season, Mercedes-AMG is presenting a special model of the SL 63 4MATIC. It reflects the look of the Mercedes-AMG F1 W13 E PERFORMANCE racing car. This special model of the performance roadster is limited to 100 units.

The color graduation from high-tech silver metallic to obsidian black metallic is inspired by the model from the top class of motorsport. The same is true of the star pattern on the vehicle flanks and the PETRONAS-colored contrasts: these can be found on the front apron, side sill panels and rear diffuser. Added to this are 21-inch AMG 10-twin-spoke forged wheels in a matte black finish with PETRONAS-colored rim flanges. The electric soft top is in black.

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 115

The AMG Aerodynamics package not only dramatises the appearance: larger flics on the front and rear apron, the larger rear diffuser and the active profile in the underbody improve the aerodynamic properties. The same applies to the downforce and aerodynamic drag. This all brings advantages for the driving characteristics at high speeds and for improved efficiency. The AMG Night package and the AMG Night package II enhance the visual appearance of the "Motorsport Collectors Edition." With the AMG Night package, selected exterior features are finished in high-gloss black: the front splitter, side sill panels, mirror caps and the decorative trim in the rear diffuser. Added to this are darkened exhaust tailpipes.

116 www. LuxLifestyle-magazine.com

The AMG Night package II adds further features in black chrome, including the radiator grille, typography and Mercedes star at the rear. In addition, the interior components of the headlamps and rear lights are darkened. The brake callipers of the AMG high-performance composite brake system are also painted black. The AMG fuel filler cap in silver chrome with "AMG" lettering also emphasises the special status of the edition.

The standard AMG Performance seats are available with two upholsteries: in black nappa leather/MICROCUT microfibre with red topstitching and embossed AMG emblem in the head restraints, or in black nappa leather/MICROCUT microfibre with yellow topstitching and embossed AMG emblem in the head restraints.

www.LuxLifestyle-magazine.com 117

The AMG carbon-fibre trim harmonises with the heated AMG Performance steering wheel with carbon-fibre rim. The Burmester® high end 3D surround sound system, ambient lighting, the MBUX Interior Assistant, the Driving Assistance package and the head-up display are included as standard in this very extensively equipped special model.

AMG TRACK PACE provides support with a wide range of data when driving on the racetrack. The Load Compartment package increases everyday practicality, while the

illuminated AMG door sill panels welcome passengers with the AMG logo.

To protect the valuable edition model it is equipped with GUARD 360. In addition, every customer receives a customised AMG indoor car cover with logo. With its breathable outer skin made of tear-resistant synthetic fabric and an anti-static inner lining of woven flannel, this protects the vehicle from dust and scratches in the garage.

THE SWEETGRASS LOUNGE

An elevated lounge in downtown Charleston, home of the South Carolina vodka.

The Sweetgrass Lounge, the official flagship of Sweetgrass Vodka, is in full swing after its recent grand opening serving locally sourced Sweetgrass spirits and cocktails.

From a secret family recipe to winning the 2022 Best Domestic Vodka award, Sweetgrass Vodka was founded in Charleston, South Carolina. The Sweetgrass Lounge has been carefully curated to reflect the brand’s tagline “drink like a local.”

The Lounge was built out by Flyway Construction, designed by Ross Ritchie of Loyal Architects and Olivia T.M. Brock of Torrance Mitchell Designs, and features a textured wall finish by artist Emily Pope Harris.

“The Sweetgrass Lounge is an incredible new space for The Refinery and greater Charleston community,” said Lindsey Drummond, General Manager of The Sweetgrass Lounge and seasoned food and beverage industry professional. “Sweetgrass is a brand with ambitions much bigger than just its product and we hope that the lounge is a place that inspires that within our guests.”

The Sweetgrass Lounge reflects the intimate spirit of a hideaway or hidden gem. Its design is true to the local Lowcountry feeling with upscale furnishings and accompanied by an ornamental hammered copper pot still.

“The goal was to take an empty box in a newly constructed commercial building and warm it up with materials like mahogany, copper, leather, woven woods and grasses; while also taking into consideration elements of the Sweet Grass Vodka brand and bottle itself,” said Brock.

Among the lounge’s cocktails are colorful ingredients including ube, yuzu, espresso, thyme, and many more. In addition to cocktails, The Sweetgrass Lounge serves local beer on tap and a light bites menu.

The Sweetgrass Lounge is located in The Refinery at 1640 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29405 and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm. www.sweetgrassvodka.com.

WHERE THE FIGAWI? BACK ON NANTUCKET FOR 2023

After a three-year absence the Figawi race has announced that it will make its much-anticipated return to Nantucket this spring.

The 52nd annual Figawi Race Weekend will be held on Memorial Day Weekend, May 26 to May 29.

Figawi Fun Fact: The #figawirace course goes from the Hyannisport breakwater to the finish line off #Nantucket Harbors entrance, It's about 26 miles and it's estimated over the years almost 5k different Sailboats have run the course. We hope the traditional tent party along Nantucket’s waterfront will be back as well.

The Figawi race tbegan in 1972 when legend has it that Bob Horan, Joe Horan, and Bob Luby were having drinks one night at Baxter’s Boathouse in Hyannis Harbor. A friendly disagreement ensued about whose boat was the fastest of the three. They decided to settle the dispute by racing from Hyannis to Nantucket. Apparently the fog was thick that and at some point during the race, blinded by the fog with no GPS, one of the competitors shouted “Where the f*ck are we?” Well, said with a thick Boston accent it sounded more like “Where the Figawi?” Thus the name, and tradition, of Figawi Race Weekend was born. Sailors from all over the country attend. And some non sailors as well.

The newly debuting Jeweled Barn is located just outside of the VIP area of the Winter Equestrian Festival, which runs from now through April 2, 2023.

Returning to the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) at the prestigious Wellington International for the 11th year, the show is the longest-running equestrian event in the world. Attracting the top athletes in the sport, WEF is the premier backdrop for trendsetting equine style. The Jeweled Barn is a tiny house, inspired by the distinguished show, as a celebration of the equestrian lifestyle. Designed to appear as a barn on the exterior, it is an homage to the home of the horse. Its interior is meticulously detailed, for the viewing and purchasing of pieces from Karina Brez signature collections.

IF YOU HAVEN’T, YOU SHOULD

“ART, EXPERIENCES, AND FRIENDS…”

On a beautiful November morning, I hopped in the car and glided down I-95, dreaming of art and collaborations. It is Art Basel Miami Beach’s 20th Anniversary. As the exits evaporate, I think what a treat to experience it over all these years. A time for enjoyment, not rushing; it’s early in the week and early in the day, and the next 24 hours will hold some fun adventures dished up Miami style. It’s about art, and when I say art, I mean the likes of the greats, both old and new.

My schedule was more like a treasure map than a rigid itinerary. As most events at Art Basel, of course, are featuring art, I always love stopping by the annual La Prairie event to see what they are highlighting. Double parking to dash into the La Prairie Skin Caviar Spa Wing at The Standard, a bite of Tuna Tartare on seaweed crackers, and a spot of champagne; oh, how I do love my La Prairie! “Not much art but part of the Art Basel experience.” A sprint back to the car, and Thank God it was still there!

How do you make things work without exhaustion? Well, my evening provided a beautiful example. A ferry ride to Fisher Island, spending time with my friend, Jennifer, just in from Monaco, sharing a lovely dinner and precious time with my goddaughter, Sissi. Capping this fun-filled day with a most beautiful, restful night of sleep. Comfort, connection, and love. Did I mention they have one of the most beautiful Fernand Léger’s?

As the sun emerged on the horizon, sipping a delicious cup of cof-

fee, pondering my return to Miami for a special brunch in celebration of the Brooklyn Museum. Upon arrival, I couldn’t help but notice the light and the fresh, modern vibe in Miami; it is hard to convey. One of the stand-out pieces which provided a perfect backdrop was created by contemporary artist Ali Banisadr. A lovely privately hosted gathering supported by Christie’s and UOVO; candidly not sure what was my favorite, the art or the views from the penthouse. My final stop was the Convention Center, and quite frankly, historically, where the core gathering for Art Basel has lived. With my ongoing love for art, I have met some incredible people like Emily Crowley, Director of Acquavella Galleries. Spending her first 15 years in New York before moving to Palm Beach in 2020 as the gallery opened in Royal Poinciana Plaza. As I said hello, my eyes caught a magnificent piece that stirred me. A gorgeous creation by artist Damian Loeb called ‘Diana and Endymion.’

Time to bolt; the valet pulled up with Led Zeppelin playing. I kicked off my Figue sandals and made my way to the fast lane. I glanced in the rearview mirror, saying

goodbye to a global city that is only an hour and a half away. Noting how Miami is truly one of the most interesting and diverse cities in the United States. Truly grateful for the many friends in my life and to be exposed to such beauty and inspiration.

If you haven’t, you should… go with the vibe that hits you and say yes!
