A NOTE FROM THE FOUNDER They say that taking time out is often the biggest favour you can do for yourself, and where Lipstick is concerned this has been proven true. After a break of almost a year, we've come back with a relaunch issue bigger than ever and I couldn't be more proud of the finished result. A personal highlight? The array of strong and successful women who grace the pages of this magazine. The city summer is fast approaching and the remainder of our wage packet is being spent on the only two staples we'll need this season: rainbow brights and an urban beach bag. Wince at the thought you may, but the *admittedly jazzed up* holdall is your perfect get around companion. It is the matured and trend savvy sister to the garishly printed beach sac you took to Ibiza circa 2008. It has had an overhaul: woven, embellished or with leather detailing. It's an office tote-cum-beach bag-cum-airport carry on. A chic and super XL shove-it-all-in, sure to effortlessly aid in your weekend gallivanting. Why it didn't make it big sooner, we're not sure. After all, the Sp carrier bag charge long ago left us in dire need of an on trend piece which will hold our groceries and then some. In recognition of this completely life easing trend, we've compiled a collection of all the best models of holdall 2.0. TIME TO BUY TIMELESS You've long been savvy in business, but if the future survival of our planet is dependent on a commitment to change in our fashion habits, it's time to be savvy with your shopping, too. Sophie Cockett talks.

W ho isn't partial to a bit of a wardrobe overhaul once a season? (Or half-season - no judgement here). Bored and feeling ruthless, we cart bin bags full of oh-so-dated clothes off to the rubbish and head down to Topshop quicker than we can say Sir Philip Green. Bank account empty and shopping bags full, we give ourselves a pat on the back for transforming yours truly into a walking; talking high street edit in a matter of a few small hours. On the face of things (ignoring the mighty financial damage, obvs), this ritual is harmless. Yes, more of us are guilty than would ever care to admit, but what harm are we really doing? Well, according to the London College of Fashion's Renee Cuoco, a whopping 90% of the clothes we buy in the UK are gotten rid of within 6 months. A large majority of these go to landfill: 10,000 garments every 5 minutes, to be exact. That is 35 tonnes a year worth of new clothes

which often have absolutely ZILCH wrong with them. Dare I brand the act unsustainable without you all yawning and turning the page? Today, the fashion industry is fast. Really, bloody fast. Compressed production cycles and a hell of a lot of constantly changing stock mean we can't really be blamed for always wanting to update our wardrobes. The Ethical Fashion Forum says affordable brands offer up to 18 collections a year, and the value end of the market is booming. Retailers have no choice but to be on the ball with trends, which are now changing weekly rather than monthly. For this we can thank instant social coverage of catwalks, plus a desire to show our loyal Instagram fans - sorry, followers our daily outfit spectaculars. We can also thank the rise of the YouTube star: the sparkly, dolled up content creator worshipped by millions of passionate smartphone toting "millennials". She goes shopping fortnightly and "hauls" everything she's bought in one beautifully edited 15 minute video. Christopher Jones, a social psychologist currently based at the University of Sheffield, has collaborated in fashion sustainability research for many years. He says You Tube culture encourages LIPSTICKMEDIAUK

unsustainable behaviour: "I have seen a lot of Youtubers who talk extensively about how much stuff they have bought during their latest shopping trip. If this level of consumption is seen to be normative (or acceptable), then the move towards a more sustainable fashion sector could be a lot slower than we would wish." It's glaringly obvious that we are stuck in a cycle which (sadly) can't be maintained, so in our quest towards sustainability, we need to 1) make the manufacturing process more sustainable, and 2), reduce our waste. Stage one is very much in the hands of the brand, and moves in the right direction have been made over the last few years. H&M launched a sustainable collection called "Conscious" back in 2005. It's set at the same price point as everything else in store, but it's made with 25% sustainable materials. Catarina Midby, H&M's UK Sustainability Manager said: "We hope to achieve 100% sustainably sourced cotton by 2020 across the whole business. H&M will always have a sustainability consideration because it has a future". Topshop has a Fashion Footprint programme whilst ASOS have an "eco edit" on their website. Smaller brands are jumping on the bandwagon, too. Page 15

Yvonne Lin, founder o f London based Zelle Studios said that they reduce waste by producing in small batches and only repeating orders when it's completely necessar y. "We try to use natural material in conjunction with synthetic material to ensure products last wash after wash w itho ut sacrificin g premium hand feel. As an independent brand that's growing, we are definitely trying to do our part." Whilst a ro und of applause are definitely in order for these brands and their green fingered efforts, the fil bigger problem still lies in what we do with our clothes when we get r id of them. If we want to reduce landfill then that is where the work needs to be done. Maybe we start fro m the beginning and spice up our shopping habits, because honestly? I'm always on board a shopping based challenge. As it stands, we don't replace. We just add to what we already have. We walk into a shop w hich has new stock every week and we are suddenly incapable of not buying somethi ng which is completely off our personal fash ion piste. I am totally guilty. Last week I bought a tea dress wh ich was more ladylike and luxe th an anything I h ave ever owned in my not s o lady-like and luxe life. I know I w ill probably wear it once and throw it away 6 months after. With this in mind, Christopher J ones said I sho uld start buying for long term investments. Ch erish wh at I buy and be. More. Picky. Challenge accepted. A moment of excitement was followed by a brief moment of searing self doubt. How co uld I

less aw ay AND buy a bit less whilst still fuelling the fashi on addition I've had since the womb? And there i t was: my light bulb moment. I discovered Depop. I say 'discovered' - a few others got there first: the critiques who dubbed it one of the "ho ttest home business ideas o f the mo ment" and the several squillion image-conscio us

sentiment, but i t's a horrible oversimplificati on. Only 0.1 % o f all the clothing collected by charities and take back pr ogrammes are recycled into new textile fibre, says anoth er of H&M's Development Sustainability Managers, Henrik Lampa. With Depop, most of what we put online gets s old if w e use the right techniques, and we know where the clothes are coming from. Light bulb moment number two: maybe we're heading towards a hyper-transparent future.We'll ask brands w here our clothing came from; they'll realise tha t promoting a story about how their

teens w ho 've been o ut of their minds with fashion flavo ured passion ever since its launch . I might not be so late to the party, however, wh en it comes to getting excited about Depop being really super sustainable. Th ere's pr obably not even a party for th at. Apparently 'one man's junk is another man's treasure', so it seems down-right daft n ot to sell on yo ur clothes once you've done with them. Depop founder, Simon Beckerman, told Artefact Magazine tha t when h e launched the app, the aim was to create a platform for up and coming designers to sell their clothes. Little did he know , armies o f young girls w ould be eager to sell the contents of their wardrobes on the app whilst reducing landfill. Two birds. One stone. Depop is better than recycling clothes in store-run initiatives. H&M encourage sh oppers to leave their old clothes in bins around sto res in return for vo uchers. Nice LIPSTICKMEDIAUK

to the buyer. The London College of Fashion h ope that in 5 years time we w ill all be better educated abo ut sustainability: small changes make a big difference. We'll be Depoping, charity shopping and purchasing selectively. Oh , and we'll be buying into H&M's Conscious range and then some. Our bank accounts w ill thank us and landfills will thank us a whole lot more. I'm not saying stop shopping completely, but for the love of clothes, let's work togeth er to stop fast fashi on from killing this big ol' planet we'd struggle so much without.

Award winning chef, Sophie Michell, shares recipes from her seventh cook book and teaches us the secrets to her career success.

Sophie Michell 1s the UK's youngest female executive chef. That in itself is impressive. She's adored by press and fellow cooks alike, and when we sat down with her at Chelsea's Beaufort House, we could immediately see what all the fuss is about. She'd modest, passionate, and totally in the know. Sophie's career has been exciting and varied. Before spending eight years as Executive Head Chef at London's Belgrave Hotel, she was publishing employed, self cookbooks, working in TV and transforming London's food scene. Her secret to foodie success? "I was 15 when I started. I had such a head start, and what got me noticed was doing

being competitions and nominated for young chef of the year. I got myself an agent the year after that." Since leaving Belgrave eight months ago, she's dedicated her time to writing, appearing at food festivals up and down the country, and running her events business. That's something she really enjoys: "with events, you're building up a whole story, journey and creation for one night which I love". Sophie also works alongside three other female chefs at the Gorgeous I<:itchen, Heathrow Airport, an eatery with a menu inspired by the passions and specialities of each of the four LIPSTICKMEDIAUK

chefs. Seriously, there's so many strings to her bow. Is there anything she'd change about her career if she could do it all over again, we wondered? "If I was 18 now, I think I would definitely do some sort of food truck thing and focus on just getting my food out there rather than working my arse off in a restaurant for 16 hours a day." She continued: "Nowadays there's a wider spectrum of people doing things on social media, which are really interesting: pop ups and street food - it's a completely different kettle of fish."

CHIA SEED BREAKFAST RECIPE

Sophie's seventh cookbook, Chef on a Diet, was born when a marriage proposal and a lifetime spent in kitchens left her feeling like she needed to get in shape. "I had opened two restaurants in about two years, and basically just put on loads of weight", she says. She wanted to lose a few pounds, but with a chef's mentality and cooking skills. Luckily for her, a cookbook with this at the core was something which just wasn't on the market, so she got writing. The best bit? "It works! I lost 12 kilos in 3 months and got down to the size I wanted to be, all by having complex carbs and proteins for breakfast and then minimal, high protein lunches and dinners." Here, Sophie shares with us some of her favourite Spring breakfast recipes which are healthy and totally delicious. Don't just take our word for it.

"I adore chia seeds: they're full of nutrients. For this breakfast pot, I add a touch of maca powder as it gives you a powerful energy boost. I sometimes make this with almond milk and raspberries, or even apple juice and grated apples to make a chia Bircher muesli." INGREDIENTS - SERVES 4 300ml coconut water 100ml coconut milk 1 teaspoon maca powder 50g sultanas 50g chia seeds 50g desicated coconut Agave syrup to serve

METHOD Mix the coconut water, coconut milk and maca powder together in a bowl, then add chia seeds and sultanas. Leave for 10 minutes then divide between 4 pretty bowls or glasses. Cover up and pop in the fridge for a few hours, then sprinkle with desiccated coconut and agave syrup when ready to eat.

BIG SUR EGGS BENEDICT "I am a huge fan of Californian food and cooking. I went to Big Sur recently and I was bowled over by how stunning it is. At the hotel I stayed at, they served Eggs Benedict with a layer of avocado underneath the egg. To make it Et in with my low-carb eating plan, I swapped the mufE.n for some chicken sausages. It's now one of my favourite brunch dishes." METHOD First, make the patties. In a large bowl, mix together all the ingredients and some seasoning. Once the mixture in combined, use your hand to shape it into four patties. Place the patties on a plate in the fridge to chill and firm up. In a bowl, mash the avocados together with the lime juice and coriander, and season with salt and pepper. Place a large non stick frying pan over a high heat. When the pan is hot, add the patties and dry fry for 6 minutes on each side of until cooked through.

INGREDIENTS - SERVES 4 2 avocados, peeled and stoned Juice of 1 lime A small handful of freshly chopped coriander 4 free-range eggs 2 teaspoons olive oil 200g spinach leaves Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper Hollandaise sauce, to serve For the turkey patties: 500g turkey mince 4 spring onions, finely sliced 1 red chilli, diced

Poach the eggs. While they are poaching, heat the oil in a saucepan over a high heat and add the spinach for a few minutes to wilt. Stir in some salt and pepper. When everything is ready, you can assemble. Take out four plates and place a patty on each one. Top each patty with a layer of spinach, some crushed avocado, an egg and finally a touch of Hollandaise sauce. I often serve with salad leaves and cherry tomatoes on the side.

Julia Scodie is the woman at the forefront of a whole new "get London fit" movement. The ringleader, if you like, and she's using pilates to drum up the attention. That is something most of us thought we didn't have, but Julia's company, Exercise in the City is starting to make big waves across the capital in proving we do. Since being founded five years ago, it has dedicated itself to getting office workers across the city taking part in fitness classes on their lunch breaks. Desks are pushed aside, your office becomes a studio, and you've lost no time from your day. Genius.

"I had a feeling it would work there wasn't anyone else doing it at the time. The gym and boutique fitness marketplace was getting quite crowded", Julia said of her brainwave. She was a one man band in the early days but now has over 15 instructors running up to 15 classes a day across London. Even the staff at the City of London Police are getting in on the act. Julia's business model is super flexible; that's why she thinks it's been so welcomed. Classes can be as long as you like to fit in with busy schedules. "Someone in the office contacts me so say they want to start a class for their team. Or it might be someone from the HR or wellbeing team who have a budget, in which case the company can pay for it." She continued: "We offer bespoke services and so many different discounts". If your dream is to found a powerhouse of a brand, you've got to learn from the best. That's why we caught up with Duck & Dry founder, Yulia Rorstrom, to discover how she transformed the hairstyling marketplace. "It's not just a salon: it's a destination where you can spend yout time." Ukraine-born Yulia Rorstrom proudly reflects on the brand which she's spent the past three years creating. We're sat in her office in her recently opened Oxford Circus store. The space is comparable to a New York loft: very industrial with stainless steel beams and brick work aplenty. It's light and airy and totally stylish: a haven tucked away above the hustle and bustle below and with views that stretch down Oxford Street. She's done remarkably well to score this place. Rewind half a decade and we were starting to become inundated with blow dry bars. They'd make it big

in the states and were starting to land on UK soil, but none of London's efforts were quite the same. In fact, none of them really took off at all. There seemed to be a general theme: get it done quickly and get it done cheap. We're almost certain that's why Duck & Dry works so well: they're about something completely different. "Even though we recognise that being time efficient and providing value for money is important, we didn't want to be pigeonholed into being quick or cheap. We want to be providing quality hair styling" Yulia said. She continued: "We're one of the few salons that has 16 looks, 50% of LIPSTICKMEDIAUK

which are hair ups. We introduced the modern 'hair up' that's not just for weddings or balls". The first Duck & Dry store opened on the much sought after !Zings Road in 2014. This was a great starting point for Yulia and her team: "Chelsea was fantastic for us. We really owned the market place and we have a great following there, with lots of repeat clients." As the Chelsea store has gone from strength to strength, so has the brand as a whole. Not only have they seen the opening of their Oxford Circus store, they've launched a tried and tested, natural product line, and grown their team from 8 to 40 employees. They've styled the hair of Pippa Middleton and a multitude of Made in Page 41

Chelsea cast members, and featured on many-a-TV show (namely the Apprentice and Celebs Go Dating). "Yes, it has definitely been busy!" At the time of our interview, Duck & Dry's third store, one based in Soho, had just opened its doors. It's at number 1 Carnaby Street: part of a wellness experience led concept store in a three storey \ townhouse. Shoppers can expect Sweaty fitness Betty studios, a Duck & Dry blow bar concession and a new sparkly version of Notting Hill's Farm Girl cafe. Seems like a pretty dynamic trio to us. In short, Duck & Dry 1s a branding dream; according to the Yulia, for formula creating a brand powerhouse is a simple addition of 5 ingredients. Finding a gap in the market, thinking up a catchy name, collaborating with lots of other brands, knowing when to give it your all, and understanding the operational grind. So, let's expand. Step one is to make your selling point really unique. Yulia might have put a strong focus on styling, but that wasn't all she wanted at the brand's forefront. Creating a salon experience was just as important, if not more so. W hy?

Because that's what everyone else was lacking. The inspiration for her idea began in Japan, when Yulia was on her travels. "It really inspired me there", she said. "They have a high concentration of salons per square meter, and I hadn't seen anything like that before." It wasn't that they were all necessarily blow dry bars, she continued. They were bog

and the buzz of America's. It was time to combine the two. We have a specially created music list which differs Monday through Thursday and at the weekends. We have prosecco bars and DJ sets and we do lots of collabs." Duck & Dry are particularly popular on the weekends, when the salons really come to life. Groups of people come and hang together. out Yulia beamed: "If you're going to go for a cocktail or a coffee, why not go for a blow dry? It's seen as an activity and a fun thing to do. That has set us apart from the others." Once you've got a USP, you need a name that's just as good. this Granted, might be the hardest part, so you've got to be playful with it, says Yulia. How did you come up with your name, we asked? "It was a play on words... ducking in, going underwater and getting your hair wet, and then drying out: the blow dry." She says it was meant to be playful and distinctive, different from the names of all the other blow dry bars which just blur into one. The biggest struggle for budding entrepreneurs tends to be knowing when to quit the day job and give the brand their all. For Yulia, the whole process from

standard salons, but each of them had bags of character and personality: "It varied from interiors to uniforms, to drinks bars and the music they played." Yulia's travels further took her to America, where the salons had "a real buzz about them. W hen I went there, the girls were really excitable and happy to chat and hang out. It was their weekly spot before going out." London was a totally different ball game. Salons lacked the originality of Japan's LIPSTICKMEDIAUK

having the light bulb moment to opening the doors of her first store took about 10 months. She acknowledges this is pretty quick, particularly when it comes to securing commercial property in the capital, but whatever your time scale, this is what Yulia recommends: "I think the research, thinking of the idea and raising finance can totally be done alongside a job, but the execution will become very tough if you have lots of commitments. In my experience, it would be very hard if you're in full time employment." By all means, have a Plan B, but for your brand to work you need to give it your undivided attention. Once the persona has been created, the best and most fun way to get your name out there is to collaborate with lots of cool brands, Yulia says. Over the years,

Duck & Dry have done some pretty exciting stuff with other big names. They've worked with Batiste, Barbie, Boden and Birchbox. They've done a braid pop up at the Adidas store, ran a pop up Coco Rum bar for the most recent London Fashion Week, and collaborated with French Sole. "We tend to pick on certain events throughout the year, whether it's LFW or Halloween, and inject something a bit different for our clients. Our thirst for events is definitely there." Yulia's dream brand collaboration? "Liberty. It's beautiful, so my dream pop up would be there." That's something we'd love to see. Last but not least: be prepared for everything your business will bring you. W hen you're setting up a business, especially in an industry you're not familiar with, you might spend a long time thinking about

the big picture: the client experience, the interiors or the lookbook. Yulia said: "Sometimes what you don't spend as much time on is the day to day operational grind, and that's tough, because first of all you're unprepared for what that's going to bring you." By operational grind we mean everything from suppliers to staff management, clients and landlords. HR, recruitment, schedules, website maintenance and all the legal bits and bobs. There's a lot to consider. Yulia continued: "It's not particularly sexy or glamorous, but it's what makes the business and takes up 90% of your time. It's the most stressful part." Looking to the future, Yulia is keen to figure out whether Duck & Dry works in a different capacity and not in a standalone store. "We've been approached by large department stores with the view of Duck & Dry on smaller scales as concession models", she said. Franchising is also something which could see the brand grow. She continued: "We are currently signing our first franchise for Duck & Dry, and that's really exciting. There is a lot of demand outside London and I'm not sure if I personally have the appetite elsewhere. I'd have to be present to execute it well, so it'd be great to find fabulous franchise partners. Oh, and building the product line. Both are important for scalability". Duck & Dry's newest and most popular style is called "hot off the tongue". As tempting as it may be to use social media as a way of advertising your sparkling social life, there's many other more productive things you should be using it for. For starters? Landing your dream job. Of course, you've probably heard that many times before, but knowing how to use each of your accounts differently can be a bit of a minefield. How can you be efficient with what you post and ensure what you put on Twitter isn't a bland replication of your latest Insta pie? We spoke to the best in the business to find out how you can use all your apps to your advantage.

INSTAGRAM

Instagram had to come first. It is the • platform which has launched so many women into social stardom and that captures users with it's great big ounce of daily inspo. According to social media specialist Jonathan Pollinger, Instagram should be used to showcase your creativity. What you post is vital: a club photo from last Saturday night? Nope. A video of your wine drunk bestie on a Wednesday? Absolutely not. Show you can think outside the box with captivating instastories and a pretty grid, so employees recognise you're as good with how things look as you are with number crunching. Oh, and follow the right people, like those who work in the office you want to be in. You'll find out how Claire from marketing loves the Friday Prosecco hour. In your interview, tell them you think it's a nice touch; they'll be blown away that you know it even goes on. Easy plus points.

Twitter is for more regular • comment. Twitter is for engaging in conversation and it is for sharing things you find professionally interesting. It moves much faster than Instagram, so to hold a leading place in the rat race, recognise that the retweet tool is something which should not be overlooked. Share articles which show you're up to date with news in your field, add a comment and a couple of relevant hashtags, and you'll be gaining visibility for yourself with minimum effort. Reply to tweets published by the companies you want to work for and the people you want to work with, and as Jonathan suggests, "use Tweetdeck to keep on top of vacancies". Comment and show support and chat away, because after all, Twitter is a really great community to be a part of.

• Granted, Facebook might not be used in the same way as Instagram and Twitter are: it's not usually for connecting with companies and industry big timers. But? It still needs to be kept in check. Most employees will Facebook search you during the interview process, just to get a bit of a grasp on who you are. For that reason, your profile picture needs to make you look semi respectable. Oh, and it also needs to show them what you actually look like. Pictures of your cat are strictly banned, but according to Sam Collier, founder at Collier Media, pictures of your BF or hubby are totally encouraged. "It just shows you're normal." Lastly, change your privacy settings so that only people who you're friends with can see what you're up to, because let's face it, a future employee will not need to see you checking in for reunion drinks on Friday.

Tinder and Bumble are so last year. Give your love life a Spring clean and go straight back to basics. It was 2007 and Nana Wereko-Bobby was working in the heart of corporate America: the Rockerfeller Centre, New York City, to be exact. She hated it. The long hours, the loneliness and lack of quirk. There wasn't really much to sing about, except for one thing which provided a bit of light relief. The dating scene was fast paced, exciting and offline. It was sociable when days in the city were nothing but the opposite. "You'd walk into a bar, you'd talk to people, you'd give them your business card, and that was just normal. It was really cool." Nana became addicted to the buzz of meeting new faces and discovering the restaurants and bars New York had plenty of.

On her return to London a year the high-flying later, twenty-something hit the ground with a thud. Dating had become digital here, and Match.com and el--Iarmony were experiencing marketplace booms. They were digital honey pots for young who wanted professionals someone to share dinner and drinks with (read: young professionals desperately worried they'd never find someone to marry). In a bid to meet people outside of her social circle, Nana jumped on board the bandwagon. "It took me all of about 24 hours to feel disheartened. It was so quick judging because you knew there was a million other people you could talk to", she reflected. LIPSTICKMEDIAUK

The dating industry had completely exploded. "Everyone was so spoilt for choice, so we became very throw away with our connections and our attitudes towards dating." But as with the world of Tinder, every cloud can be swiped left to reveal a silver lining. Enter the Nana who was about to lead an all-star tribe of love gurus intent on changing the 2011 dating landscape for good; a Nana who'd had a brainwave to give what we knew a New York style makeover (with a few twists and tweaks). It was 2011, and Social Concierge was born. "It was purely editorial at first: a site telling you where and how to date in London." It made dating stylish, so you could enjoy Page 47

the whole process. It wasn't long before Nana started to receive messages asking her to put on events. Readers wanted parties in the stylish places with the stylish people she wrote about. "The first one was a disaster. It was just a bunch of randoms in a room being very awkward." It was the sort of 'have the floor swallow me up' dating experience that Nana was totally trying to avoid. Queue brainwave number two: "I had the idea to make it into a private members' club. We knew we wanted people who were well educated, driven, sociable and able to be extroverts when pushed into it". This was the USP which Nana built from there on out, resulting in a company which now has a database of over 14,000 members, offices in New York and upcoming Hong Kong and Singapore headquarters. Not too shabby. We caught up with Nana at The Curtain in Shoreditch, to find out how seven years have seen her fix some of dating's biggest flaws. "The market was so skewed". Nana has a charming, mid 20's employee called Grace who dedicates her whole life to scouting down eligible bachelors. Seems dreamy at first glance, but the process is drawn out and sales heavy. Nana will run campaigns like "Gentleman's Hour". Last year, she invited men to an event full of women, where they could Page 48

drink for an hour for free. Grace will then get their feedback, offer them free tickets to join the club, meet them for coffee to get their lowdown, then try and keep them gripped. There's lots of headhunting, but with women it's not so difficult. The sifting out of bad eggs is also done for you, since Nana and Grace have a set of criteria for the daters who join their service. Don't let that put you off, though - it's all for the better. To ensure you're mixing with people similar to yourself, everyone has to fill out a club form providing information on their education and career. "I'm not saying we're not

We mix up our business models to fit the type of daters in each city." "There's a big vibe at the minute that the start up community is all about tossing in your corporate job and getting millions of funding and just doing it. I wouldn't say that is the healthiest thing. When you look at a lot of female founders, they tend to be a bit more cautious and slow with their growth. Slow and steady works." "Your side hustle is so important. I give my team half a day off a week to work on their passion or their big idea. I know what they do for me isn't necessarily their forever." Find someone to bounce your ideas off. "If you don't have a co-founder, set up a board of mentors who you can go to for different things. People who have done the same thing as you, but who are just five years older. You can meet up with them every couple of months and get advice". "Make time for yourself with a habit of three. I go for a run, make my bed and read a book for half an hour. I then feel calmer and ready to make better decisions with my team."

Laura Bartlett, founding Editorial Director at House of Coco, is our girl crush of the moment without a doubt. Why? She single handedly founded the coolest luxury travel publication we've seen in a very long time. There was so much we wanted to know, so we caught up with her for a bit of a chat...

"The wanderers, adventurers and marvellous millennials". They're the people Laura Bartlett wanted to capture when she launched her quarterly luxury travel magazine back in 2010, and from the moment she quit her sales executive role, she began to do exactly that. Contrary to many success stories, Laura started her empire with no investment. Absolutely zilch. Perhaps that's what made it all the more rewarding, we suggested? "Definitely. When things are great, I can give myself a pat on the back and I know I don't have to thank anyone else for getting there." Back in the early days, Laura's publication was primarily fashion focused, championing the

underdogs of the fashion industry and bringing trends to life on paper. It was a local magazine, so Laura took to the BBC1 show, Dragon's Den, in a bid to make her brand international. "I was totally annihilated by Peter Jones. He told me to quit; I was devastated!". But like all great entrepreneurs, Laura didn't take no for an answer. She made proving Peter Jones wrong her mission, went on to secure advertising and the magazine sold out in 16 countries worldwide. Impressive, huh? You'd think from there the only way would be up, but Laura admits it was around this time that she put all her eggs in one basket by entering into a partnership with a fashion events company. The partnership failed, so with little luck and a few hefty knock backs the magazine had to close down. Does she regret the choices she made? "It definitely knocked me back for a while, but I'm never one to stay down". She continued: "I brushed myself off and decided to start over, and I'm so LIPSTICKMEDIAUK

Whether it's her creativity and business brain, or just a cracking idea for a publication, it doesn't matter. It's pretty much dead cert that we're all wanting to take a leaf our of Laura's book. Here are her top tips for starting your own luxury magazine: • Know your audience. Really nail who you're aiming your content towards. • Be consistent in your content. You have to turn up every single day! Even if it's a new blog post or social media update, you can't dip in and out. • Don't be afraid to be different. There's so many magazines out there, but no one will do it quite the way you do. • Collaboration over competition. Find brands who compliment what you do - it's a great way to tap into their audience. • Keep going! You won't get a million readers overnight and it'll be a while until brands are knocking on your door, but when it happens it'll be worth it.

Leah is an on-and-off screen dream: the full package, if you like. A woman who in a typical week can be seen presenting for the likes of ITV, BET International and Sky, hosting a weekly flagship radio show on The Beat London 103.6fm, is a Producer and TV businesswoman. We think this is pretty impressive! As if it wasn't enough she is also a woman who takes time to mentor and develop the skills of others to harness the power of using their voice. Now that is worth talking about! We are not surprised to hear she's won seven media awards last year alone. Leah founded The Red Carpet Academy just over three years ago with one goal in mind: to help anyone who came through the doors become a knock-out speaker. To do so? She handpicked some of the best professional TV presenters and public speakers to join her team and create a three level training program. ''We don't just teach for TV presenting", she said. "We personally coach you to connect with your audience on stage or through the lens. W hether you're promoting your business, product

Leah believes presentation skills are crucial, more so today than ever: "In a digital world if you have a business or a brand, you want to be able to professionally livestream on Youtube, Instagram and Facebook with ease, and boost your number of interactive followers. If you become a master presenter and can deliver your idea to a room full of people, you can also experience a huge surge in sales. The main priority though is to become a recognised expert in your field. Knowing how to present yourself on and off camera is the way forward." We're not sure why we didn't see that gap in the market sooner but this is Leah's expertise after all. I walked away feeling humbled by Leah: she recognises that visual media is the future, and that she shouldn't be the only one who is trained to deliver it well. For that alone, we really do applaud her.

Escape to the rolling hills of Herefordshire and immerse yourself in the world of William Chase's best tasting booze.

Setting the scene Herefordshire is one of the UK's greatest unsung heroes. There's something about the county's rolling fields and amplified chill which make whoever visits feel completely at ease, and here at Lipstick, we can vouch that there's no better place to stay if you're thinking of heading West. In the village of Trumpet, about five minutes outside of the historic market town of Ledbury and just at the foot of the Malvern Hills, sits the Verzon House Hotel. It's a Georgian house, with nine beautifully decorated rooms, a cosy bar complete with log fire, and a chandelier lit restaurant. As you roll down the gravel driveway to the foot of the house, you'll be greeted by a fairy lit porch and beautiful terrace gardens overlooking hills aplenty, but it's not until you step inside that you really experience the Verzon magic.

Eat, Drink and be Merry The Verzon house team are all about eating and drinking. They're passionate about local produce and local flavours, and that certainly rubs off on everyone who steps inside. (Verzon House is owned by Kate Chase, ambitious and visionary wife of Chase Distillery founder, W illiam. But more on that later.) The first cocktail to sip upon arrival has to be "Mr Chase", says barman Patrick Buckley. "It's light and refreshing, garnished with cucumber and a tonic top". Just the ticket. The bar staff will be happy to let you taste your way through the entirety of the drinks menu: from wines handmade at the Chase family's vineyard near Aix-en-Provence in Southern France to ciders made just down the road at Much Marcle's Weston Cider. By that time, you'll need a bite to eat. You'll be escorted through to the restaurant: it is spacious and airy with large bay windows overlooking the surrounding farmland. There's only 13 tables, most of which are oak and laid to perfection with personalised Chase glassware. The imaginative and seasonal menu is made up of produce which really couldn't get more local. In fact, everything is created almost exclusively using ingredients from Herefordshire, Worcestershire and Gloucestershire. Choose from Hereford beef, Teme Valley lamb or Three Counties cheeses. It's only the fish which comes from further afield.

Farm is aptly located just 15 minutes away from the hotel, in Preston-Wynne. It was once home to William's Tyrell's empire, but since he moved on from potato chips to try his hand at spirit making, it has been home to the distillery. If you fancy learning about how runny mashed potato is turned into flavoured gin and vodka (or even if you just want to tag along for the tasters), then the frequently run tours are for you. As you're walked through every step from field to bottle, you'll discover how Will perfected the recipes for all his products, from his classic GB gin to the Marmalade Vodka and Elderflower Liqueur. Hip 'n' healthy eateries are popping up here, there and everywhere, and they have been for a good few years now. So for new additions to the foodie scene? It's all about creating a launch buzz then riding that wave for as long as possible. Luckily, High Mood Food have originality in abundance, and their popularity hasn't shown any sign of slowing down. They were founded m September 2017 by Ursel Barnes and Joey O'Hare, following a super summer successful pop-up. Not only was it the pair's undeniable flare for intuitive eating that had health nuts aplenty flocking forwards, it was their very unique love for fermented foods. These are a big part of the menu at High Mood Food; what with the addictive savoury tang and health boosting properties, it's a pity we hadn't tucked in sooner. The place is adorned with copper light fittings and pastel colours, resemblant of their fresh and fruity USP. The pink Himalayan salt counter is a nice little nod to fermentation, and after weeks of winter flu suffering, I feel I've stepped into will which somewhere immediately make me better. High serves a different array of fermented spectaculars for every meal and snack. I was tempted by breakfast: kefir and flax soak power bowls are a big deal first thing; since the early rising High team serve from 7:30, the cafe is the perfect convenience stop for time-poor professionals on their way to the office. I decided to pay my visit at lunchtime for the sole reason that I wanted my plate to be tickled pink with the spot's famous beetroot hummus. I was enamoured by choice and loved how personalised my meal was. I embarked upon creating LIPSTICKMEDIAUK

my own High Bowl: green leaves to begin with spiced roasted carrots and biotic slaw (made with kombucha vinegar mayo). For my ounce of protein I opted for teriyaki salmon, then added a ferment, an activated topping, the delightful hummus and a live dressing. I can vouch for the being vinaigrette ACV downright delightful. I tucked myself away m the gorgeous seating area and watched the differing customers tuck in and out. It was good to see that an interest in good gut health and delicious food transcends "types", and as I come to the end of my meal, I'm as reluctant to leave the surroundings Joey and Ursel have created as I am for my food to end. I feel full, relaxed and rejuvenated, and can confirm I will most definitely be back. I I

You've had a busy week and you need to unwind. Michal Galecki, Head Mixologist at Kensington's K West Hotel, tells us the best cocktails to make with the ingredients you have in the fridge.

Method: Pour the tequila over ice in a tall glass and top with orange juice and add the grenadine. Add more grenadine for a sweeter flavour. Garnish with a slice of Orange or Grapefruit.

Method: Shake ingredients together with ice cubes and strain into a tall glass. Top up with tonic then garnish with a lime wedge.

Garnish with a couple of raspberries. If you like your cocktails on the sweeter side, you can always top up with lemonade.

Being a working mum is totally in these days; here at Lipstick the 'mumtrepreneur' is our new found superhero. She builds a brand whilst children run riot, and she holds down a full time job, too. We caught up with two "mummy bloggers" who've made their little spaces on the internet careers to be proud of, all whilst keeping the little ones happy.

Cara is the woman behind Within These Walls: a blog which was born after giving birth to two little boys. She said: "I started my blog having lost all sense of identity after giving up my job to be at home with them. I needed something separate from being a mum and a wife." For Anna, the birth of her blog, Blossoming Birds, came whilst she was pregnant, so she could document her growing family and make sure she'd remember all those little moments that matter. A couple of years down the line and both blogs have not only filled their original purpose, but are loved by small and international brands alike. Anna's Blossoming Birds has featured Laura Ashley, Boden,Johnsons and Crew, whilst Cara has worked with Home Sense, Game and Joules. Anna said: "As I speak to you I'm at the airport

headed to aJoules Spring/ Summer launch. I'm so pleased to be able to bring my mum with me." Of course, the journey for both was not plain sailing, and as is the case for many bloggers, giving up work just wasn't an option immediately. After giving birth, Cara worked night shifts as a carer for the elderly, balancing her hours with those of her husbands', whilst Anna continued to work as a supermarket store manager, balancing long shifts with her blog. Between the late nights, early mornings and all round juggling act, there are some positives. Anna said: "I am proud of running this alongside a store and a high pressured job. I am also very proud to have got my first contract, to feel like a well-known brand wants to invest in mine 1s a huge compliment." Where do they see their blogs

going in the future, I asked? Cara said she's had some bad experiences writing about parenting, with lots of negativity and horrible comments, so the future is filled with fashion and interiors. "I feel much happier writing about those topics." With growing families and blogs alike, the future can only be bright. It was time to find out how we can take a leaf out of the books of these ladies and be supermums, too.

CARA ON SHARING HER CHILDREN & LIFE ONLINE: "I am often asked about this & I do feel I have made mistakes along the way. I never expected my following to grow to what it is now, so when I initially posted about my children or my house, 1000 followers wouldn't have put anyone at risk. Now my following has grown I do regret that. Fortunately, we are moving house soon so I will be able to make more considered decisions on sharing my location. In terms of the boys being on social media, I am confident that I share a very small percentage of my life. On weekends I rarely share my day and I am very focused on being present. I respect when the boys don't want to be photographed and the majority of my work is focused on interiors or lifestyle and is no longer about parenting. Unfortunately it is hard to ever know if you are doing the right thing with parenting. I am just trying my best and doing what I personally think is right for our family."

Don't keep clutter. The more you have, the more things there are to tidy, organise and lose. I read Marie Kondos book and it changed my life.

I leave out the girls', and my, clothes every night. The last thing I have time for in my groggy morning state is deciding what to wear. I think when you feel good and pulled together, you have that little bit more confidence. I don't think there are many working mums out there that wouldn't take that.

Involve your partner. I can do anything but not everything, and I have to remind myself of this often and before burnout. For some reason men can't read women's minds, so I ask for support when I need it.

To entertain the kids I have art supplies on standby. When I have to take images for a campaign, I need to do it when the kids are around, and play doh is a miracle worker. In terms of content, I write most when they're asleep.
