A Stylish Future Proof Wet Room Yvonne and Ray came back to Roman Bathrooms, after two previous projects, to modernise their main bathroom. They wanted to replace a sunken bath that they had enjoyed for many years with something that was more accessible. “I enjoy a long soak in the bath and whilst I wanted the ease of access that a wet room and shower brings I did not want to give up on using the bath,” says Yvonne. Our solution was to provide a wet room environment in front of a bath providing the best of both worlds. The wet room area includes a large rain shower head as well as a hand held shower, the screen can be moved to create a shower area or folded back to give access to the bath. A lift was fitted to the bath later so that Yvonne can enjoy the bath too. “We are delighted with the wet room solution, it looks amazing, works well for both of us and is a dream to keep clean and maintain,” adds Ray. “The installation team were very good, the workmanship was excellent and nothing was too much trouble. “Roman Bathrooms looked after the complete installation, coordinated all of the different trades and checked on progress, making it stress free for us. We are once again really pleased with Roman Bathrooms and would not hesitate to recommend them to others.”

Summers Days By Jane de Weijer : Make Space Interiors ltd Contact: www.makespaceinteriors.co.uk

As an Interior Designer i am always looking for the best , brightest, most exciting new trends. Painting a ceiling in deep metallic shades for instance, or combining those dramatic rich emerald greens and inky Art Deco blues . Designing a ‘tonal' room, created from an extended palette of colours from the same spectrum, is back in favour with Designers . It allows for a combination of texture and shade helping to create a calm and soothing atmosphere, This is particularly deal for a bedroom design scheme. Try it. Here are my tips for designing your tonal room.

TONE ON TONE within the same spectrum, for example, if you are creating an Olive green room all the shades of green will work tonally as opposed to contrasts and clashes.

As I have said previously colour is back. From olive greens to rich blues or dusky pinks, they can all be found on the High street this year, and this trend will continue for some time to come.

To illustrate I have created on my board a soft pink bedroom, from deep pink walls to pink bedlinen and upholstery it creates a warm and inviting space. It is important to introduce deep shades so that the colour scheme has ‘weight’ especially as there are no contrasting colours or patterns to add the visual interest.

Creating a tonal scheme where all the colours used are variants on the same theme is extremely popular with designers at the moment. The trick is to ensure that the colours lie

TIPS

1 2

Visit your local DIY paint store and collect a pallet of paint samples that will form the range of blended tones that you will be using in your scheme. This will form the basis of all the choices that you make from wall colours to bedlinen to soft furnishings. I am using this range of shades from the Farrow and Ball range. www.farrowandball.co.uk I will use Colour 1, Sulking Room Pink, on the walls to create a deep dramatic space. Colour 2, Cinder Rose, will be your base shade for curtains or blinds at the window, also on bedlinen combined with colour 3, Middleton Pink, and colour 4, Pink Ground. Pile on the contrast tones with cushions and throws. Colour 5, Rangwall, will add a splash of intense contrast to add freshness to the scheme, try this on a lampshade. Create your board. This is essential if you are creating a tonal room as it will keep your choices focussed, it is easy to stray when the options open to you as you design your room are so wide and varied. 8

ON THE BOARD 1. Paint colour, Cinder Rose , a deep dusky pink by Farrow and Ball, www.farrowandball.com This shade provides a beautiful base colour for a pink tonal room. Team with crisp white woodwork and ceiling. 2. Custom made headboard. Go to your local curtain and soft furnishings maker, they should be able to help you to create your customised headboard. This one is in a soft pink velvet, a lighter tone than on the walls. Shop for a range of shades of pink bedlinen guided by your colour swatches. 3. The velvet lampshade adds that shot of warm peach/pink to offer a pink contrast, as on the 4. colour swatches. This velvet lampshade is from a range at www.etsy.com

9

Our Home 5. An occasional chair in dusky pink, Blush Pink chair by www.wayfair.com 6. A statement pendant light will add glamour, this one pays homage to the current Art deco trend, 7. Bombazine 5 Light Sputnik Chandelier, www.wayfair.com The rules stay the same for any tonal colour scheme that you choose to recreate, keep it harmonious and use layers to provide contrasts.

WALLPAPER SPOTLIGHT There are some fantastic wallpapers in manufacturers current collections. A glorious combination of patterns and shades, metallics and plains. Whatever your taste or style there is a paper out there ready for your walls.

I have collated a few of my favourite metallics here. Be bold and don’t be too shy to combine rich patter and texture to create an exciting interior. 1: A brand new paper by Farrow and Ball , Tessella, BP3612 2: Marquise from Romo wallcoverings, www.romo.co . The shade is Whitewash but have a look at the Charcoal colour way too. 3: I love this Zara Shimmer Metallic Wallpaper in Charcoal Copper, www.ilovewallpaper.co.uk

10

Our Home 4: Milan Metallic Wallpaper Charcoal Gold, another stunning metallic , www.ilovewallpaper.co.uk 5: Shimmer Tree Wallpaper Soft Grey Silver from I Love Wallpaper.co.uk. 6: For the rich blue room try this paper, House of Alice Onyx Marble Metallic Wallpaper in Navy Blue /Gold. Blue rooms are still the top trend for 2019/2020. 7: Finally, a delicate oral design from Colefax and Fowler, Honeysuckle trail, www.colefaxandfowler.com

Davbro Builders the Velux Certified Installers

The Velux Certified Installer Partnership was the new goal for Davbro Builders.

I fitted my first Velux roof window 27 years ago. I hadn’t got a clue what I was doing really; newly qualified as a Carpenter and Joiner I was tasked to fit this roof Velux window. It was a very daunting task cutting a hole in someone’s roof, but I got it fitted and no leaks!

An application had to be made for status and our work was checked by the British Board of Agreement. An on site visit to check our work was carried out and this was thorough. The visit comprised of making sure the windows were fitted to Velux guild lines, gaps were the right size and all the parts were fitted correctly. Following this we had to answer questions on fitting, and all this was done in front of our customer! As far as we are aware Velux are the only company to go this far on making sure installers know exactly what they are doing.

Davbro Builders was set up in 2002, a small family building company. Myself and my brother started general building projects but were always looking for a gap in the construction industry where we could be different to regular builders. After seeing an advert in the Velux Roof windows Brochure for training we applied.

We gained Velux Certified status 25th August 2015 and have found it very beneficial especially having direct links to Velux find an installer website.

Velux offered us training at their Kettering Offices – a very impressive purpose built complex where training was carried out. The main purpose of offering the training was to ensure their product was fitted correctly and that all the product options were used. We received training certificates from Velux, but we were looking at how we could use this training to make us stand out and show as a company we knew what we were doing.

Being a Certified Velux installer, we get a variety of enquiries, from a new installation to parts and servicing enquiries. Recently we were contacted by Clent Hills Veterinary Practice because they had an ongoing problem with a Velux window that was leaking quite badly. The window had been fitted about 15 years ago and you could see very clearly that water was getting in and damaging the ceiling. We erected scaffolding and found that the Velux flashing kit had been cut to fit the size of window, not a good idea! We replaced the Flashing kit and supplied a BFX 1000 underfelt collar to guarantee no more water ingress. The Velux BFX 1000 underfelt collar is a great option to fit, guaranteeing water tightness every time. We go to quite a few problematic Velux installations, it’s not the product it’s the installer that’s at fault. Anybody can fit a Velux window, but can they fit it correctly? Some do, unfortunately some haven’t got a clue. The answer to this - use a Velux certified installer.

Velux soon introduced a rating system for its trained installers called VIP Installer Partnership. We aimed for the highest rating and meeting all their requirements we received 5 Star status - their highest rating. This was very successful for us; we could see that customers required competent trained installers. Potential customers found us through the Velux Installer web site and enquiries came through to us at Davbro Builders. A few years ago, Velux had a change in policy and wanted a governing body involved in the regulation of fitters.

THE COSTLY DIY DISASTERS THAT COULD WIPE THOUSANDS OFF YOUR PROPERTY’S VALUE Making changes to your house to increase its value has proven to be a popular pastime for homeowners across the country. In fact, according to the Office for National Statistics, us Brits spend nearly £30 billion a year on home improvements. But what if those internal updates end up wiping thousands of pounds off your property’s value? Rex Nye, who owns online builders’ merchant D.W. Nye, explains that whilst many property owners think that following a prescribed list of improvements will add equity, this isn’t always the case. He said: “Often the issue is with the quality of work that has been undertaken. So, if it isn’t done to the correct and required standards or regulations, or the correct planning permission hasn’t been obtained, there could be major issues later down the line when you come to sell the property. It’s important to make sure you know what you’re doing before you start any major updates. If you’re ever at all uncertain, you can chat to a builders’ merchant or consult a professional builder.”

But it isn’t just poor workmanship that could cause issues. Failing to consider the results before getting stuck in could also leave you in financial hot water. Here are some of the costliest DIY mistakes that could end in disaster, rather than reap dividends. Turning a garage into another room With the Self-Storage Association UK reporting more than a quarter of customers stashing their stuff in self-storage because there is no room for items where they live, turning your garage into an additional room might prove to be a dud idea in the long-term. In fact, even if you have a vehicle, research carried out by RAC Home Insurance reveals that garages are more likely to be used for storing clutter, than a car. Even worse, a badly converted garage could result in a dark, cold and unusable or odd shaped space that puts potential purchasers off. Incorrectly knocking down internal walls Open plan living is certainly a trend that has increased in popularity over the last 22

Our

decade. There’s no doubt larger spaces are more flexible for today’s laid-back lifestyles. However, before undertaking any work, check out these top tips for knocking down internal walls to ensure you aren’t doing anything that could cause you a huge headache and unforeseen hold ups when you come to sell your home. Overspending on a kitchen renovation Kitchens are renowned for being the heart of the home and having a showstopper is bound to have buyers battling to put in a bid. But beware of going makeover mad and overdoing it on high-end integrated appliances, units and worktops. Unless you’re able to take white goods with you, buying the priciest items won’t make much

difference to your property’s overall value. Likewise, if your property doesn’t fall within the luxury property market, investing in expensive worktops and handmade cabinets will most likely be detrimental to your profit margins. Installing the wrong windows Curb appeal is essential when it comes to selling a home. Ugly, unsightly or incorrectly installed windows could put off would-be-buyers. Even worse, if you’ve got a listed property, or a property with specified conditions, it could cost you thousands to rectify if you haven’t got the appropriate permissions in place before replacing windows. It’s worthwhile spending a little more to get the most aesthetically pleasing option and double-checking any restrictions your property might have first.

CHOCOLATE TORTE SERVES 16

OVEN TEMPERATURE - 160oC PREP/COOK TIME - 1 hour and 30 minutes COURSE - Dessert

INGREDIENTS: BISCUIT BASE 175g bourbon biscuits 1tbsp of Ovaltine 85g melted butter Multiply by 1.5 if you want to push base up sides of ring.

CHOCOLATE TORTE 225g 70% dark chocolate 160g ground almonds 140g panko 225g unsalted butter 340g caster sugar 6 free range eggs 1 drop of vanilla 36

CHOCOLATE GANACHE 110g 70% dark chocolate 225ml of double cream 125g of icing sugar

Our Food & Drink EQUIPMENT: 12 inch ring | Flat baking tray | Parchment paper | Kitchen aid mixer with K beater BISCUIT BASE Start by melting the butter in a small pan over a medium heat or in a bowl in the microwave for 30 seconds or so, depends on the power of your microwave. pulsing the bourbon biscuits in the magi-mix until they resemble fine crumbs. Mix the cocoa into the biscuit crumbs and pour over the melted butter. Use a metal spoon to thoroughly mix the butter and biscuits together to create a cement like texture. Place a piece of parchment paper on the baking tray making sure it is wide enough to fit the metal ring on it. Empty the biscuit and butter mix into the ring and evenly squash the base down and push up against the sides if using more mix. This doesn’t have to be neat. Place this in the fridge and start the torte. CHOCOLATE TORTE Melt the chocolate in a heat proof bowl over lightly simmering water and add in the ground almonds and panko crumbs. Stir this mix until fully combined.

CHOCOLATE GANACHE Bring the cream and icing sugar to the boil and then break the chocolate up into it. Stir until the chocolate has melted and the mix is smooth. When the torte is cooled from the oven spread the ganache all over evenly. Allow the ganache to set and then slice and serve with thick double cream and raspberries.

Cream the butter and sugar together until light and then beat in the eggs one at a time. Now add the chocolate mix to the butter and eggs and beat vigorously until combined. Take the biscuit base out of the fridge and pour over the chocolate mix. Bake for 55 minutes at 160oC

DONALD TRUMP DROPS IN AT STOURBRIDGE RUGBY Stourbridge Rugby has enjoyed hosting many VIP guests at its Annual Corporate Lunch before - Eddie Jones, Glen Ella, David Gower, Bill Beaumont, John Peters, Austin Healey and Nigel Owen are just a few of the names that have graced the stage at what has become the largest external corporate event in the UK. However, this year Jason Leonard, Michael Vaughan, Philip Serrell and John Bentley were joined on stage by none other than the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who made time to drop by ahead of his state visit to Britain.

Groove until the small hours. The following morning, nearly 300 Minis & Juniors gathered for this Presentation Day to make the end of the 2018-19 season. A packed weekend for every section of the Club. With the season now over, Stourbridge has already started preparing for the 2019-20 season. Training for most teams starts at the beginning of July, with a pre-season game for the First & Lions XV planned for Saturday 17th August against National 2 South team Dings Crusaders from Bristol. Admission for this game is free and kick off will be at 3:00pm.

Comedian and impressionist, Mike Osman, entertained the 1600 strong audience as a very convincing 'Leader of the Free World' to round off what had been a brilliant line up of speakers. We were then treated to Mr. Trump walking from table-to-table, recording special messages for those who asked. It was a great event and probably the best Corporate Lunch to date. To have England’s most capped player, Jason Leonard OBE, followed by former England Cricket Captain, Michael Vaughan OBE and an auction by the charismatic Philip Serrell, all held together by MC John Bentley was a real treat.

Our new Community Department will also be busy over the Summer with their holiday Rugby Camps. The dates for these are 23rd, 25th & 26th July and 27th, 29th & 30th August. The Camps are hosted by First XV players, ably helped by some of our Colts and are proving to be very popular. The new season opens with Stourbridge First XV hosting Loughborough Students in National 1 North (Level 4) on Saturday 7th September, followed by the Lions XV training on Kidderminster at Stourton Park in Midlands 1 West (Level 6) on Saturday 14th September. We look forward to welcoming you to our Club for the new season!

The ‘May Weekend’ didn’t end there. Nearly 300 people enjoyed the May Ball the following night, entertained by the band Tru 42

5 REASONS TO MAKE EXERCISE APART OF YOUR ROUTINE Are you at the point now where you want to have more energy, get rid of the aches and pains of everyday life and feel the best you ever have? Then you need to make exercise apart of your weekly routine. There are so many different factors that stop us from exercising but it is something that we SHOULD make time for so that we can live the life that we want. SO here are 5 reasons why you should be exercising and how it will benefit your life: • Exercise can help with Fat Loss – now it’s not all about losing weight however, it sure as hell goes a long way to making you feel more confident within yourself to do the things you want to do. Like wearing the clothes you want, or being able to eat the foods you enjoy without the fear of adding weight! It burns calories! • Exercise can help combat health conditions long term – Exercise helps reduce Cardiovascular disease, lowers blood pressure, diabetes and many more. It can also help with mental health too by releasing endorphins (a feel good hormone) it will help those who suffer with depression, and helps reduce stress and anxiety as it is an outlet. • Exercise lifts Moods and Boosts your Energy Levels – Are you someone who suffers with low mood and has no energy? Well exercise stimulates brain chemical that will leave you feeling healthier and happier. This will in turn boost confidence and improve self-esteem as a result so that you don’t second guess yourself all the time. • Exercise promotes better sleep – so if you’re someone who tends to hit the snooze button or someone who struggles to get to sleep, exercise will help you fall asleep quicker and into a deeper sleep so that your body can recover. Be aware of exercising too late as it will stimulate your body but all in all, the effects are good apart, it’s all positive! • REMEMBER Exercise can be FUN… - It doesn’t have to be going to the same old gym, walking on the same old treadmill! You can find a sport that you love and enjoy to keep fit! Or you can work within groups led by Personal Trainers where they support you throughout and you can meet like-minded people who want the same as you! This way you can share your achievements together! So if you’re someone who wants to make exercise part of their daily routine but doesn’t necessarily want to a gym – try new things out – look for things that you enjoy. As Einstein said - Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Jamie Evans 46

HOW TO BE A GOOD BRIDESMAID It is such a happy time when one of your good friends is getting married and it’s a wonderful thing if you are asked to be a bridesmaid. It’s quite an honour. It means that you are loved and valued as a friend as well and being someone, the bride-to-be can trust and rely on.

It’s All About The Hen Do!

However, with such status comes responsibility. You are, and certainly will be on the day, the Brides ‘right hand man’. You need to be there to iron out any wrinkles and make sure the Bride’s day runs smoothly. You will be involved in the forward planning and decision making from the start. There’s no doubt that you’ll have a job list as long as your arm to do before the day itself, so here is a few pointers to help you be the best bridesmaid you possibly can.

Usually as a bridesmaid you’re going to be heavily involved in planning the hen do. Your friend, the bride-to-be, will only be too happy to off-load the organising of this event as they will have so many other things on their minds. This is your time to shine! As you know your friend really well you can plan the perfect hen that will suit her personality, style and interests. If you plan a 52

night or weekend that is full of things that she loves to do, then she is sure to have a good time. However, you do need to be mindful of things such as cost, travel and location. Make sure that all the attendees can afford it and have time to put arrangements in place such as childcare if it’s overnight. The ‘soon to be wed’ friend might not enjoy herself as much if half of her friends couldn’t make it.

as dress fittings, venue searching, hen do planning etc. Your friend may not need you to do all of these duties but you need to make sure that you can be there to support her if she needs you. It may be as simple as a second opinion that is required but remember she has asked you to be the bridesmaid as she values your thoughts and is relying on you to steer her in the right direction.

Be Committed To The Role

Make Sure You Can Afford It

Being a good bridesmaid means being committed to the bride. If you take on the role then you need to clear your diary or at least make sure you have left space for such things

In some instances, you may be required to pay for your own bridesmaid dress. In this country this is usually funded by the general wedding budget but if the bride-to-be expects you to 53

Our Weddings pay for your dress and accessories, and she wants you to wear something extravagant and pricey, you may need to consider whether you can afford to be a bridesmaid. It may be worth having a chat early on about what she wants you to wear and who will be funding it. It could be that a you share the cost or that you buy the shoes or pay for your hairdo. If the cost is shared you both should be able to afford something lovely without it costing too much.

positive to keep things moving along nicely.

Be A Good Friend A wedding can be a very emotional event. It’s a huge step the couple are making together and often with a sizeable spend so it’s understandable why couples want things to be perfect. It may be that the couple have lost a loved one whom they had always imagined to be at their wedding or perhaps they’re struggling with all the planning and are feeling overwhelmed. Whatever it is, you need to be a good friend to the bride. Being supportive, helping out whenever you can and just being a good listener will make all the difference to a bride who may be emotional or even nervous in the lead up to her wedding. Being a good friend is imperative to being a good bridesmaid.

Grin And Bear It Some bridesmaids find themselves in dresses that they are not too keen on. It may be a colour or style that perhaps you wouldn’t have ever chosen for yourself. The bride-tobe has undoubtedly got a theme or vision and has chosen dresses in a certain style or colour to match this. Unless you are terribly against the dress the general rule of thumb is just to wear it and keep quiet. It is the bride’s day after all. However, talking about the bride’s expectations for your outfit early in the planning will allow her to find different alternatives and a compromise can be reached. Similarly, don’t do anything too different with your look before the wedding or at least before consulting the bride-to-be. A large tattoo on your shoulder when she’s planned strapless dresses just might tip her over the edge! Try to keep your look the same leading up the wedding. Remember the bride-to-be’s theme and don’t make any dramatic changes without running it past her.

Be Helpful All brides are different and will expect different things from their bridesmaids. Some will have wedding planners who will be setting up their reception for them, others will be the DIY type and need helpers to get things ready. Either way, you’ll be required to be helpful. You may need to make calls to the wedding planner, pick up dresses, drive people places or help to decorate the venue. Whatever your duties, you should be focused on being helpful and

Nick and Royston's Diary Lisa`s party 30years Not many hairdressing salons can celebrate 30 Fabulous years in business, but even less can boast that they still have a team member that was there on day one! Royston Blythe started with just Royston and Lisa as his colour technician when they opened the salon at Newbridge in 1989. This anniversary was certainly not going to pass without recognition. Under the pretence it was Nick`s 60th Birthday Party, the team, friends and clients were invited to The Park House for a night of celebration. Nick and Royston kicked the night off with a very warm and moving dedication to Lisa. Sharing with everyone, the fun and frolics that they have got up to over the years and examples of the hard work and loyalty Lisa has always shown to them. Photo Court

esy of Wolverhampton West Magazine The team has dramatically grown, to now 42, committed, dedicated and talented individuals who make up the Royston Blythe Family. So, in their own unique and remarkable way, Nick & Royston will continue to show their appreciation for everyone in the salon.

With a mixture of tears and laughter, everyone could not have been happier for this very special lady. After a delicious dinner, everyone was up rocking the dancefloor until the sun came up! An amazing event, as always! And, it won`t be long before they are celebrating the next one!!!!

Claire Caudwell 50th Birthday Party] Great friend, Claire Caudwell celebrated her 50th Birthday in style with a lavish party in London. Nick and Royston were among a host of celebrities including Dawn and Ashley Ward, Lily Becker and Emma Noble to name but a few to mark this fabulous lady`s special day. The theme of the evening was `The Greatest Showmen`, with extravagant performers including Acrobatics, Dancers and Artists to wow her guests. Everyone had an amazing evening, the room was full of great friends, the atmosphere was electric, and everyone partied well into the very early hours.

The 2019 Bentley Launch With Bentley launching its latest four door saloon, the 2019 version of the Flying Spur (not even been named yet!), has been described as even more luxurious with a dynamic and sporting edge. This elite brand needed somewhere spectacular to launch this phenomenon and chose the exclusive Le Manoir Aux Quat`Saisons. Nick & Royston were one of Eleven VIP Couples that were invited to this preview of their latest model. They were greeted with music and champagne in the beautiful gardens, followed by dinner at the celebrity chief Raymond Blanc`s world class restaurant. Le Manoir has earned two Michelin Stars for its gastronomic flair and outstanding organic produce and the wonderful evening was shared with close friends Joanne and Malcolm Bridgwood and Julie and Roy Millard.

The Spice Girls Tour When the invitation came to join friends, Wes and Pete at The Spice Girls Tour, well, Nick & Royston couldn’t resist! Joining the fans at The Principality Stadium at Cardiff, their box gave them a fabulous view of the girls strutting their stuff. They love an extravaganza and the show did not disappoint. The outfits were dazzling, the performance energetic and the singing wasn`t too bad either!!! A great day, full of fun and laughter with wonderful friends, not a bad way to spend a bank holiday weekend.

Is anxiety holding you back? The chances are that while reading this, you are grabbing a few minutes to sit down and take a short break. The pace at which we live our lives is demanding: juggling work, family commitments and a busy diary of events can sometimes feel overwhelming. While we all feel anxious from time-to-time, anxiety can become excessive and persistent, with its psychological, emotional and physiological symptoms, such as ‘panic attacks’, impacting on our daily lives and those around us.

Hilary Sims - Life Balance

Hilary also helps people dealing with anger, depression, bullying, family breakdown, stress, low self-esteem, bereavement and trauma, listening, offering non-judgmental support and helping clients identify ways of dealing with situations. Therapy sessions take place at her practice or in the home or workplace. “A problem shared is indeed a problem halved. I believe we should all take time to focus on ourselves and affirm that we are living our lives in a balanced way. Being self-aware gives us the opportunity to addressing issues before they manifest into something bigger,” she adds.

Hilary Sims, a Registered Member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy and an Accredited Member of the National Counselling Society, is helping individuals of all ages, couples, families and employees of local businesses talk about anxiety and take positive action through her private practice, ‘Life Balance - Counselling Just For You’, based in Stourbridge.

Hilary is also experienced in working with senior school-aged children and young people, and says children can benefit hugely from talking therapies. “As a mum and through my work in a school environment I have experienced at first hand the pressures of growing up in an image-obsessed society, exam stress, family and relationship issues, social anxiety and fears about their future. Giving children the opportunity to talk about their feelings and helping them develop strategies to manage them doesn’t just benefit them in the short term; it raises self-esteem, instils in them the confidence to ask for help when they need it and the understanding that they can overcome any problems they encounter.”

“I give people a safe, confidential space to focus on themselves, explore the issues causing their anxiety, and regain control of their thoughts and behaviours through cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), a collaborative intervention which involves talking and doing,” she explains. “We talk about things in the therapy room which are then practiced between sessions.”

Hilary offers a free 30 minute introductory consultation. To book or for further information, call 07850 447585 or visit www.lifebalancecounselling.net

Kaia Health’s App-Based Back Pain Treatment Outperforms Standard Physiotherapy in Clinical Trial Randomised controlled study is first to demonstrate treatment efficacy using mobile devices for self-management of low back pain New York, 9 May, 2019 - Kaia Health, a digital therapeutics company, announced results from the first randomised controlled trial of its app-based therapy program for patients with non-specific low back pain. Detailed results of the study were published in the journal NPJ Digital Medicine and showed that patients using Kaia, a downloadable app for back pain, reported significantly lower pain levels compared to the control group treated with physiotherapy and online education. "This study can help add to the growing body of evidence that generally supports the use of multimodal treatments for chronic conditions,” said Thomas R. Tölle, M.D., Ph.D., Head of Pain Medicine, Technical University Munich, Germany. “Within this study, we saw a notable benefit for people managing low back pain when delivering multimodal treatment through the digital modality of the smartphone, as is done in the Kaia app." Low back pain is one of the leading causes of global disability, and treatment is expensive.1,2 According to the Office for National Statistics, back, neck and muscle problems account for almost 31 million days of work lost in 2013 costing the UK economy £14 billion per year - with an estimated onethird of the UK adult population affected by back pain annually.3,4

"As a company, we want to support the improvement of the current standard of care for people living with back pain," said Konstantin Mehl, Founder and CEO, Kaia Health. "And while these study results are promising, we will be initiating a similar U.S.based study looking at the use of the Kaia app for self-management of back pain." About the Randomised Controlled Trial5 In the study, analysed patients with low back pain were treated using two methods. The first group used Kaia Health’s multi-platform mHealth app (n=42), while a second control group was treated using a standard therapy program consisting of 6 once-weekly, inperson physiotherapy sessions guided by a certified therapist plus sophisticated online education about back pain delivered to patients weekly with a motivating email (n=44). Both groups were encouraged to live an active lifestyle and perform the therapeutic exercises at home, but the app provided three therapy modules - back pain education; physiotherapy; and mindfulness and relaxation techniques - and recommended a 3 to 4 times-per-week exercise plan that could be personalised for each user. App users also could interact with a human coach via the app if they had questions.

Our Health About Kaia App Kaia is a smartphone-based approach for managing chronic back pain. In Europe, Kaia is regulated as a Class I medical device. Currently, Kaia is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to seek regulatory clearance in the U.S. About Kaia Health Kaia Health is a digital therapeutics company that creates accessible, evidencebased treatments for a range of disorders including back pain and COPD. Working with experts in various medical fields, the company uses technology such as machine learning algorithms, to deliver individualised app interventions that aim to empower and motivate patients to take control and self-manage their condition with digital alternatives from their home using devices they already own (i.e., smartphones and tablets). Kaia Health is member of the Digital Therapeutics Alliance (DTA), an international association of manufacturers that set industry standards for what clinical evidence levels are required to call a product a digital therapeutic. Kaia Health is located in New York City. For more information about Kaia Health, visit www.kaiahealth.com.

Both the control and Kaia app treatment groups experienced significant pain reduction over the course of 12 weeks. However, after 3 months, patients using the Kaia app reported substantially larger decrease in their back pain intensity than control group patients: 2.4 vs. 2.0, respectively, on a numeric rating scale ranging from 0 to 10 (where higher numbers represent more pain). The decrease suggests that Kaia may be an effective treatment for low back pain over a 3-month timeframe.

The Puppy Diaries Join Dinky the Great Dane for the second part of his adventure as he goes to a Puppy Party and starts training classes. MONTHS By Viki Barnett 6 OLD FACILITIES CO-ORDINATOR, BLACKS VETS

Hello! Viki and Dinky here. You may remember us from the last edition. I am the Facilities Co-ordinator at Blacks Vets and my Great Dane pup and I are excited to be sharing our adventures in puppyland. Glad you could join us again! Such a lot has happened since our last article, not least of all Dinky’s incredible growth! At 6 months old he is already a healthy 45kg (just over 7 stone) and could well exceed 100kg by the time he is fully grown. There’s certainly a whole lot of him to love! Luckily, as part of our Protect My Pet Club membership, the Blacks team keep track of his weight so that we can ensure we are feeding him correct amounts for his size. It is very easy to overfeed a hungry puppy which can lead to obesity and health problems in later life. At Blacks, we have trained nutrition experts who can help and advise on diet for pets at any stage of their life, whether young, old or suffering with specific health issues such as dental disease or poor kidney function. It’s always well worth a chat with the team to ensure that you are taking care of your pet’s dietary needs in the very best way.

Regular weight checks are also important in determining the correct dosage for preventative medication such as flea and worming treatment. Simply put, larger dogs require larger quantities of treatment to be effective. Our Protect My Pet Club membership includes a comprehensive annual programme of flea, worm and parasite medication complete with handy text reminders for when to apply. We also include treatment that helps guard against Lungworm, a potentially fatal condition in dogs. Giant-breed owners particularly benefit from the club through the savings they make on larger quantities of medication. Owners of large or giant breed dogs will know that they are often prone to heart conditions and a proactive approach to their health is essential in helping them to live a long and healthy a life as possible. Great Danes certainly fall into this category and it is really reassuring to know that Blacks partner, Dr Girish Thakral MRCVS BVSc AH Cert VC, holds advanced qualifications in cardiology. As Dinky gets older, we will have the opportunity to have him screened for Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM) which is a common cause of heart disease in larger dogs. Caught early, the condition can be managed through medication,

72

so it is well worth a discussion with your vet if your pet is a gentle giant.

Getting Out And About As a young dog, Dinky is incredibly inquisitive and has his nose and paws in everything! Our Pet Starter Pack (£49) included essential primary vaccinations and a microchip, meaning that once the full vaccination course was completed, Dinky was able to get out and about to explore. Providing puppies with a broad variety of experiences at an early age means that they are less likely to be nervous as they get older, so we have spent lots of time introducing him to different scenarios. A walk on a busy high street and a trip outside when the bin men are visiting, helps ensure that Dinky knows that crowds and noise are nothing to fear, especially when accompanied by lots of reassurance and praise. You can download a helpful Puppy Priorities checklist of places and situations to explore with your dog, that will Simply aid successful socialisation. visit the Puppy Simply visit the Puppy Parties Parties section of section of www.blacksvets. www.blacksvets.co.uk co.uk and click the link at the bottom of the page. and click the link at

as picking up tips and tricks to help him sleep, feed and exercise well. Like all good parties, at the end of the session we had a goodie bag to take home complete with treats, a toy and money-saving vouchers. Find out about our next puppy party by visiting the What’s On section of www.blacksvets.co.uk

Beginning Training The first 6 months of a puppy’s life are also a great time to start instilling basic, good behavioural traits and joining a group training class can be a great way of achieving this. Not only do you learn to communicate effectively with your dog, you will also meet other puppy owners and can swap advice and stories. A good support network is vital, whatever shape your new arrival to the family takes! Most puppy training classes will teach you how to master basic commands such as ‘Sit’ ‘Stay’ and ‘Lie down’ and also what your puppy’s response triggers are. For many pups, food is the biggest incentive for good behaviour, but for others, playing with a favourite toy may prove to be a better reward. Eager to show off his new skills and walk close to his owner, Dinky managed to knock my Dad clean off his feet during one of his first trips out on the lead! Perhaps we have a way to go yet before he is fully trained!

Puppy Party Fun

Perhaps one of the most enjoyable parts of puppy socialisation is attending one of our fantastic Puppy Parties. These take place every month and provide an invaluable opportunity for young dogs to meet and play in a safe and friendly environment. The period up to 16 weeks of age is a crucial time to instill good socialisation habits, so we booked Dinky in as soon as his vaccination course had been completed. In spite of being the biggest guest, Dinky was initially a little shy but with some patience and coaxing he was soon participating in the games and playing rough and tumble with his new friends. He bonded with a lovely Cockapoo who seemed to have just as much energy and it was great to see him playing so happily. It was also a brilliant opportunity for me to ask questions about his development as well

I’ll be back again later in the year with more news on Dinky as he approaches his first birthday. We’ve got lots to look forward to and I can’t wait to share the next stage in our journey together with you!

URGENT PERMANENT, LOVING HOMES NEEDED Posh and Kiki Came into the branch’s care owing to the person looking after them died and they were left to fend for themselves - whilst not youngsters are inseparable and Posh likes nothing more than to be groomed. They are no trouble they enjoy food/warmth and being together. They are continually overlooked in favour of our younger cats but would make lovely companions to someone who could offer a forever home to them. They have been in the cattery so long and it would be so nice for them to have a spatial place for them to enjoy their retirement years.

NOT A HEALTHY BUNNY? VETS OFFER GUIDANCE ON HOW TO KEEP YOUR RABBIT IN TIP-TOP CONDITION Estimated as the third most popular pet in the UK, rabbits’ needs are still grossly misunderstood. Sometimes referred to as the ‘forgotten pet’, a recent survey of vets in the UK shows that 73 per cent had seen pet rabbits who were not having all of their welfare needs met. In the survey, carried out by the British Veterinary Association (BVA) ahead of Rabbit Awareness Week (1-9 June), vets aired concerns that many owners were not ticking all the boxes for keeping their rabbits happy and healthy. Providing a suitable diet topped the list of concerns, reported by 78 per cent of those seeing welfare needs not being met. 76 per cent reported that rabbits were being housed alone or with other species, and 72 per cent were concerned that the rabbits were being cared for in an inappropriate environment. As highly sociable animals, vets and animal experts recommend that rabbits are housed

with a suitable companion rabbit, the ideal being a neutered rabbit of the opposite sex. Although it is generally recognised that a solitary life has a negative impact on the physical health and mental wellbeing of pet rabbits, the survey also revealed that 43 per cent of vets saw rabbits that were housed alone. To help better the lives of pet rabbits in the UK, vets and animal welfare charities are joining forces to support Rabbit Awareness Week, an annual campaign looking at key rabbit health or welfare issues to help the public and professional community better understand their needs. 76

Our Pets

This year, the week is focusing on the importance of vaccinations after a recent outbreak of a highly infectious and deadly rabbit virus strain, Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease Type 2 (RVHD2). The disease, which can kill within one or two days, is transferred via direct contact with other infected rabbits or urine and faeces. The virus can survive for months and can even be brought in on the soles of shoes, meaning that house rabbits do not escape a potential risk. The best way to protect against the virus is vaccination. In a 2018 report, the PDSA reported that preventive healthcare in rabbits was a hugely neglected area. Vets are urging all rabbit owners and those thinking of getting rabbits to register them with a vet and have them vaccinated. BVA Junior Vice President, Daniella Dos Santos said: “Rabbits can make lovely pets, but it is very worrying to see that so many are falling short of having their basic health and welfare needs

catered for. Rabbit Awareness Week is a great way to shine a light on some of the ways that we as professionals and owners can help make pet rabbits’ lives heathier and happier. This year’s theme is vaccinations, which are essential in helping to protect rabbits against deadly diseases such as RVHD2, Myxomatosis and RVHD1. “One of our most recent surveys revealed that 98 per cent of vets had been questioned by their clients on the need for vaccinations. Anecdotally, rabbits are also often one of the pet animals that we see the least. Vets are always happy to offer advice on pet care and would far rather be presented with a list of questions from owners than not to see a pet at all! To protect against disease, the best thing you can do is to vaccinate your rabbits.” For more information on rabbit care, see the Animal Welfare Foundation’s leaflet on the best way to look after your rabbits.

Early waterers capture summer weeds! Mow Less If Drought Likely

We all love relaxing in the garden in high Summer. But hot, dry weather can turn your grass yellow, while rain – on what looks like a lovely green lawn – can spur the growth of moss and weeds. So, give it an overhaul now to keep it healthy.

Try to mow your lawn at least once a week, keeping the grass to about 2.5cm (1”) or, during dry spells, to 5cm (2”). Avoid cutting too short which can encourage weeds and moss; and let it grow longer if a stressful drought looks likely. GreenThumb provides an Early-Summer treatment. A controlled-release fertiliser feeds the grass to maintain growth and colour, while a selective herbicide targets broad-leaved weeds such as Dandelions.

Here are a few simple treatment tips from UK experts, lawn care specialists GreenThumb, who have 220 local branches around Britain. Vitally, water your lawn if there’s little or no rainfall. When needed, a regular watering early morning or late evening is best, so the moisture is likely to soak down to the roots.

Your lawn is often your most-used but least caredfor garden feature. GreenThumb have a solution to make it lush, green, and weed-free for you to enjoy. Book a treatment now, by calling them on

If you cannot water regularly, GreenThumb has pioneered the Oasis water-conserver. It encourages moisture to move between the grass roots and soil, so reducing watering and helping your lawn stay greener for longer. It can cut water consumption on mainly clay soils up to 23% and on sandy ones up to 50%. Imagine how much time you’ll save too!

MARINE CONSERVATION SOCIETY CHALLENGES PEOPLE TO GET THROUGH JULY SINGLE-USE PLASTIC FREE The Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) annual challenge to the public to avoid single-use plastic during the whole of July is right around the corner and the charity hopes that even more than the 9,000 people who got involved in 2018 will take up the Plastic Challenge in 2019.

know that it’s pretty much impossible to live completely plastic-free, but there are ways to reduce your plastic footprint and we hope that by throwing down this challenge it will focus minds on trying to ditch as much of the single-use stuff as possible.

“So, it’s time to think about all types of singleuse plastic, much of which we don’t even recognise anymore as it’s become just everyday ‘stuff’. There’s food packaged in plastic, plastic water bottles, plastic milk bottles, shower gels, toothpaste to name but a very few to get you started!”

Now in its sixth year, 9,000 people took up the challenge in 2018. The popularity of the Plastic Challenge is growing, but because Britain is still wedded to single-use plastic it won’t be an easy month for those taking part. Of the more than 8 million tonnes of it that get dumped in our oceans every year, half of it comes from disposable plastics that are only used once before being thrown away.

MCS says that people taking on the Plastic Challenge are often shocked to discover just how much single-use plastic they have been using every day: “We say, please have a go and even if you can only manage a single day, you’ll never look at your shopping in the same way again!” added Erin O’Neill.

MCS says that over the last six years of the challenge, it’s clear that for many, this month is the start of a lifestyle change. Among the hardest things people have found to replace are milk containers, dried goods packaged in single use plastic like pasta, rice and pulses, loo paper and toothpaste.

MCS runs hundreds of beach cleans annually and during last year's Great British Beach Clean, 70% of the litter found on almost 500 UK beaches cleaned by MCS volunteers was made of plastic or polystyrene, posing a huge threat to wildlife and humans. Plastic bags, bottles and tiny plastic pieces are regularly found in the stomachs of turtles and other sea creatures and in some cases have caused their death from starvation or choking.

Erin O’Neill, MCS Digital Editor, is coordinating the Plastic Challenge for the charity: “We 80

CAN YOU DETOX YOUR PLASTIC LIFE AND SMASH THE PLASTIC CHALLENGE? I’ll be tweeting about my experiences and I hope it’ll help others on the same journey.”

Erin O’Neill says there’s plenty of help on hand: “Our website offers all sorts of tips and advice and during the month of July. You can follow our social media feeds to get tips from other Challengers, share your wins, however small, or just see what lengths people are going to when trying to cut down. However long you last – an hour, a day, a week or the whole month – we’d love to know you’re out there, giving it a go.”

Sharron Davies MBE - World, European, Commonwealth and Olympic swimmer and sports broadcaster says: “Water has played a huge part in my life but it breaks my heart to see how we are abusing our seas and oceans. As a mum to a teenager, I know the Plastic Challenge will be tough, because like so many people, I often opt for convenience and that generally comes in single-use plastic. But I’m determined to give it my best shot.”

Three MCS Ocean Ambassadors will also be taking on the Challenge.

Deborah Meaden, entrepreneur and dragon on BBC2’s Dragons Den says: “I’m really concerned about the excessive packaging that you find in supermarkets and I’ll be going all out to face the Plastic Challenge head on. I know I won’t be able to eradicate all single-use plastic out of my life but I’ll be giving it a damn good try. I’d urge everyone to give it a go. We must act now.”

There will be three Plastic Challenge launch events on June 29th in London, Crickhowell in south Wales and Edinburgh. MCS staff will be signing people up the Challenge, offering tips on how to get started with a helpful booklet and handing out spinach seeds to grow at home. Away from the events, getting involved is simple. Register at www.mcsuk.org/plastic-challenge and get 24/7 help with the MCS book: “How To Live Plastic Free – a day in the life of a plastic detox" (Published by Headline UK, ISBN 978-1-4722-5981-3). Ben Garrod - Professor of Evolutionary Biology, author and TV presenter says: “For giving us so much, we should do all we can to ensure our seas continue to flourish. I’m taking on the Plastic Challenge to show that it is possible to make an impact on our single-use plastic lives. I travel a lot so I know it’s going to be hard but

The Help a South African School project launches new competition to UK primary schools The nationwide initiative, which is part of the South African Fruit campaign, invites schools to submit an assembly script based around ‘Doing Good with South African Fruit’.

to learn about fascinating South Africa, and understand how buying South African fruit can have such a great impact on the lives of the country’s growers and workers.”

The winning school will be awarded £2,000 to spend on school resources and the two runners up will receive £500 each.

Alongside the competition will be the opportunity for UK primary schools to donate unwanted English text and reading books to deprived schools in South Africa.

Judging the scripts will be the South African embassy in the UK and British television presenter, author, broadcaster and live-show performer, Stefan Gates. The winner will be asked to perform the assembly in front of the judging panel and local press.

All you have to do is visit http://helpasouthafricanschool.co.uk/bookdonation/, fill out the form and your books will be collected. The South Africa fruit industry is committed to supporting its workers and their families. Jacques du Preez, General Manager Trade & Markets, Hortgro said: “This project illustrates the strong link between purchasing South African fruit and making a difference to the country; it has galvanised support from across the industry and beyond”

To enter please visit http:// helpasouthafricanschool.co.uk/competition/ Stefan Gates said: “I have supported this initiative for several years by putting on one of my science stage shows (Gastronaut Live) for the winning school. The competition is a fantastic opportunity for UK primary schools 82

Recycle with Michael Suffolk schools are being encouraged to ‘Recycle with Michael’, as part of an initative by The Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd to divert thousands of tonnes of unwanted clothing and shoes away from landfill. Local schools that sign up to the scheme will be challenged to fill as many bags as possible before the end of September 2019, for the chance to be crowned Michael’s recycling champions. The winning school – calculated as the one with the highest ratio of weight to pupils - will receive a trophy, certificate and a very special visit from Michael, the scheme’s mascot. Designed especially for primary school-aged children, the programme is also an important way for schools to generate much-needed funds - a percentage of the bags’ financial value is donated back to the school to spend how they wish. The remaining funds raised will go towards supporting The Salvation Army’s important work to help vulnerable people from all walks of life in communities across the UK. The scheme aims to educate young people about the importance of recycling in a fun and engaging way. The programme is supported by free downloadable school materials such as presentations, posters and lesson plans

which teach environmental and charitable messages. Kirk Bradley, Head of Corporate Partnerships at The Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd, commented: “We’ve tried to make the scheme as easy as possible for schools to take part in. By following four simple steps, schools across Suffolk can receive a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of their donations directly into their school accounts. “We hope our competition will encourage children and their families to give unwanted items a new lease of life. The initiative not only supports local children but also local communities through the work of The Salvation Army to tackle homelessness, poverty, addiction, modern slavery, unemployment and loneliness.” Recycle with Michael is a simple and effective way to deal with the UK’s fastest growing source of household waste – textiles - as all donations are either reused or recycled. Schools can sign up by visiting https:// recyclewithmichael.co.uk/ to register and request bags.

OLA was founded by Ivor John Snook. Ex British intelligent services of WW2.

What made you choose your profession ? Curiosity, fascination and fear. There is no formal training for clairvoyants, though I was mentored by grandfather, the late John Starkey Sr . He was a fairground crystal gazer and palmist for many years. It was also very helpful when I studied under Professor Wilson – Knight of Exeter University , and became the secretary of the National Spiritualist Church in York Road, Exeter.

What`s the best thing about your job? The freedom that it gives to me, and hopefully the enlightenment that it brings to other people. I have been involved with several enquires in the past with the police , intelligence services and also defendants, which I have enjoyed . This obviously is an area of my work that I do widely publicise.

Here are my top tips for taking control of your finances; see how many you score!

• Above all, have a plan – it’s the old adage: if you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll probably end up somewhere else.

critical illness like heart attack, cancer or stroke before 65 than they are to die. Useful to repay a mortgage, fund private medical treatment, or just tide you over during recuperation.

• Don’t do it yourself. You don’t know what you don’t know!

• Make a will – less than half of the UK population make a will. Even in the simplest of circumstances, having a will reduces the time and the cost needed to deal with an estate.

• If you’re going to save, start early – the magic of compound interest means that the first investment you make is the most valuable. • Take advantage of available tax breaks – examples are ISAs which grow free of personal taxation, and pensions, which also grow free of personal tax, but also qualify for tax relief on the contributions.

• Review your planning – you wouldn’t think of driving 100 miles without checking if you were on course, so why would you treat your financial planning like this?

• Clear off expensive debt before saving – you will almost certainly not get as much interest after tax from a bank account as you will be paying on your debt.

Celebrating a Life Sharon is a Professional Funeral Celebrant who lives in Stourbridge. She helps families to create a bespoke farewell ceremony for loved ones. For those of you who are not sure what a Funeral Celebrant is, let me explain.

choice. Held in the local crematorium or any venue the family want. Sharon gives families the opportunity to have the Ceremony on a day, time and venue that suits them. Did you know that you can have a funeral ceremony at any venue of your choice? It can even be held at home if there is enough room. If you are looking for an alternative to a 30 minute crematorium service Sharon will be happy to advise you on other venues and help you to plan a fitting ceremony that celebrates the life and character of your loved one.

A Funeral Celebrant falls somewhere between the two polarised positions of Religious Minister and Humanist. A Minister is a member of a Religion and usually must follow the rules laid down by that organisation with regards to the structure and wording of the ceremony. A Humanist will create a very personal but totally non-religious ceremony. A Celebrant led ceremony can include prayers and hymns, poems, readings, popular music and songs too. Whatever the family wants they can have. It’s all about celebrating the life of the person who has died.

Your wishes are of paramount importance, and Sharon is dedicated to helping all families have the goodbye ceremony that they want. Whether it is at the crematorium or an alternative venue, Sharon will be there to help you and your family to make the ceremony a perfect celebration of the life of your loved one.

The funeral industry is changing. Families want something different. Current generations have a different attitude to funerals and religion is becoming less important to many. Personalised Ceremonies are now the popular

When you have sold in excess of 100,000 of a model it is pretty safe to say it is a success and Hyundai’s little baby i10 has been just that, writes Bob Hickman.

Engine choices on the i10 are quite simple, a 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder, which was in my test car, or a 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder. Both come as standard with a 5-speed manual gearbox, an automatic is an option but only on the 1.2-litre. My 1.0-litre produced 67bhp sufficient to give a top speed of 97mph and a 0-60 in 14.7 seconds.

It was first seen in 2008, the latest incarnation of this vehicle has exceeded expectations. The appeal is still there, the driving dynamics are still excellent, the interior is devoid of touchy plastic and has a more expensive feel, a delightful small car to be ensconced in.

It is primarily a town car but having said that it is comfortable on the motorway or the dual carriageway and in 250 miles of varying roads I found the vehicle to be an agile and a comfortable companion.

Our Motoring It is primarily a town car but having said that it is comfortable on the motorway or the dual carriageway and in 250 miles of varying roads I found the vehicle to be an agile and a comfortable companion.

The Premium model has technology in abundance for such a small and economically priced car, the large 7 touch screen display could link Apple and Android Smart phones. It had a great air conditioning system as standard and a lot of the controls were on the steering wheel.

The cabin has ample space for 4 adults considering its external dimensions, although boot space is a little on the small side, however if there are just 2 of you drop the 60/40 rear seats and you can then carry all the items and bits you need.

It was quite a surprise to find that the vehicle had been equipped with cornering lights, you turn into a bend or corner and the lights illuminates where you are going. I would have forgone this for the sake of having rear parking aids, in the age that we live now parking aids are essential and for the price involved I feel that they should have been fitted.

The Hyundai I10 is without doubt excellent value, it fits in to a market that is a wash with rivals but do not write the i10 off because it is towards the lower end of the pricing structure, it is a capable car, that gives far more than you would expect from it, the external dimensions are small but the interior space is pretty good. It is a pleasant car to drive, it is well made.

Hyundai claim the combined fuel figure should be 55mpg, during my week with the vehicle, I achieved 50.3mpg, so pretty close. My only reservation was 5th gear, it was an absolute waste of time in and around town but out on the open road perfect.

The warranty is excellent at 5-years and it is not ultra expensive, the price of my i10 Premium as tested was ÂŁ12,775 on the road.
