Furnished for quality to friends and families, which signifies that we are doing something right."

There are few items that turn a house into a home more than a comfortable settee or an easy chair. Of course, they need to be well made. The last thing any of us wants when we settle down to watch TV or read a book is for cushions to sag or legs to buckle.

If it’s upholstered, anything can be made, from sofas and chairs, headboards to coffee tables. Need something bespoke? Most items can be adapted to suit different room shapes and sizes. Stain-resistant chemical treatments are also available.

If you’re looking for furniture that will keep you cosy for years, head to Park Lane Furnishings, in Halesowen.

Visitors to the showroom in Park Lane can choose from a wide range of styles, colours and fabrics, from chenille to velvet, plains to plaid. Designer fabrics are also available. The team’s services are also popular with people who wish to have items re-covered. This can be done in a week and is ideal for those who want a fresh look but don’t want to change their favourite chair.

Since its launch in 2011, the company, which is proud to be a British manufacturer, has gained a reputation for high quality service and workmanship and consistent prices all year round. "We strive to supply the best quality at reasonable prices all year round and so would like to welcome our valued customers back by offering 20% off new orders. We simply make better quality furniture built to last, with no pressurising sales staff in our showroom. We listen to our customers’ needs and give honest advice. Most of our customers recommend us

PATTERNS GIVE PERSONALITY TO A SPACE SO DON’T BE AFRAID TO USE THEM

HERE ARE 5 MIXING PATTERN TIPS TIP 1.

• • • • • • • •

Pattern designs, as a rule of thumb 3 patterns together is always a good place to start.

TIP 2. Pattern 1 is your strongest statement so choose a pattern you really like and this is a good idea to be the large pattern, Pattern 2 should combine colours of the first fabric but be smaller scale pattern, Pattern 3 should be a complimentary shade or neutral textured piece but this scale should be the smallest pattern.

Using the colour wheel is a useful tool in working out what colour combinations work for pattern mixing together a few of my favourites colours mixes are: • • • • • • • •

TIP 3. Choose prints and patterns with one colour in common, for a look that feels coordinated but not too matched’

TIP 4. Solids and Textures: You don’t want to put too many patterns on top of each other. You need a place for the eye to rest. Add in solids and textures to balance and separate.

Orange and navy blue Green and purple Grey and yellow Royal blue and white Indigo and teal Blush pink and olive Sage and stone Coral and beige

If you feeling like you would love a new designer look to your home interiors, please get in touch via email Jennifer@ jennifersuzanne.co.uk

PATTERNS ARE IN…MORE IS MORE IN 2021! As we are entering into a new age of more is more approach to decorating, designers like myself are embracing layers of colour and pattern.

MAXIMALIST PATTERNS With the stark contrast of grey and beige minimalism, maximalist pattern introduces a range from stripes to animal prints and the key is to layer the patterns. If you’re looking to dip into the pattern on pattern maximalism I suggest you try a small area first with a few new cushions and get used to living with pattern. I can help make any cushion and happy to help with sourcing those perfect pattern prints.

ALL NATURAL PATTERNS Bringing the outside in, patterns that give you the feeling of being surrounded by nature will dominate in 2021. Take inspiration from a new interior design project I have recently completed in the west midlands area for a clients living room which was inspired by the colours of nature.

AFTER

One tip on pattern: if you’re just looking for a pop of eye-catching pattern, adorn the rest of your room with solid neutrals. 11

When I started looking at beachwear, I was struck by how much orange was online & instore, there are lots of shades from coral to red, so you can get the perfect shade for your skin tone. We are spoilt for choice when it comes to accessories, perfect bags for the beach, but then great to use when you get home too, these jelly sandals from Ted Baker are a pretty flip flop refresh & if you want to treat yourself take a look at odebash.com for stunning beachwear. 26

2021 is definitely the year to have some fun, so treat yourself & add new season colour into your holiday wardrobe, Lindsey Brown beachwear is really beautiful to wear from the beach to the bar, in fabulous fabrics & glamorous styles. I talked about Anthropologie in my last fashion edit & I’m here again having another fashion fix from clothing to accessories, there is a definite Boho vibe. The sandal from River Island is on my wish list & I will definitely be investing in a wrap skirt, which come in various colours. 27

This page shouts sophisticated glamour, gorgeous swimsuits from Reiss with sassy accessories, I love the idea of having my towel in a sling, easy to carry wet or dry. Sunglasses have a definite 70’s feel with large coloured frames or wear a stylish hat to protect your face from the UV rays. Pain de Sucre is a very glamorous website, this green bikini has super high waisted pants which can be folded over to suntan your tummy. I’m loving the split leg trousers add the fabulous mule from Mango to stroll along the prom.

DRESSED TO FRILL If you like embellishment in your wardrobe, you are going to love this season, there is so much beautiful embroidery on clothing & accessories, the backless dress from Mango has floral embroidery, the bikini from River Island has graphic embroidery & the sliders from Anthropologie are just beautiful, I love the silver beaded basket from Pia Rossini, this season you can find frills on necklines & sleeves, but adding frills to swimwear is just gorgeous. HOW THE SUN DAMAGES OUR SKIN

Lisa Evans Reid Clinical Director at Reflect

Although it feels great to be in the warm rays of the sun, too much exposure can result in long term damage. The sun's Ultraviolet Rays (UV) is a significant cause of skin ageing and skin cancer. Skin ageing often starts with dehydration, wrinkles, dark spots, and a thickening of the skin. In contrast, skin cancer is a change in the skin's cells.

• • • •

Basal Cell Carcinoma Squamous Cell carcinoma Merkle Cell Carcinoma Melanoma

It is essential to balance enjoying and benefiting from the sun's warmth while protecting our skin from the harmful effects of the UV rays. As we see an increase in skin cancers on exposed skin, which can be life changing!

The silent enemy Ultraviolet Rays (UV) In the UK, our love affair with the sun comes from its absence, resulting in us overexposing ourselves when it makes a rare appearance. In hot countries, the indigenous population's skin has had generations to prepare its natural protections. This natural protection comes in the form of melanin which is what gives us all the colour in our skin and the darker the skin, the more protection you have. However, just because you have a higher melanin content does not mean that you can throw caution to one side! We all must protect ourselves.

Who gets skin cancer?

Why is skin cancer dangerous?

Actinic/Solar Keratosis (AK) is the most common pre-cancer that forms on skin damaged by chronic, long term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and / or indoor tanning. Although not all AKs will become cancerous if you already have one you are likely to develop more in the future and this puts you at higher risk of skin cancer. Early detection gives the dermatologist the opportunity to treat the AK and prevent skin cancer before it starts.

Anyone can get skin cancer, and it is slightly more prevalent in men as they do not tend to use sunscreens as much as women. Also, it is more common in older people, who have had long term UV exposure, but the young are still at risk and educating older teenagers about the risks and protecting younger children from burning is especially important.

Warning signs

The simple answer is that it can spread rapidly to other organs if not identified and treated by a dermatologist!

How many skin cancers are there? Cancer researchers have discovered over twelve different types of skin cancer; most are very rare. But the main four are: 32

Our Health Actinic Keratoses are often more easily felt than seen. Skin may feel dry and rough to the touch, or raw, sensitive, and painful, or even itchy with a pricking or burning sensation. Some AKs look and feel inflamed. In rare instances, they may bleed or develop a persistent sore, also known as an ulceration. In other cases, they come and go in the same spot. Ref NICE. Do not panic just be observant with changes to your skin. If you see a change or feel concerned, get it checked! Your GP or aestheticians are trained to be observant and will refer you to a dermatologist. And remember, the earlier the treatment, the greater the success.

Get a skin health check once a year.

Practice good sun habits

Avoid UV exposure between 10.00 am and 4.00 pm when the UV rays are at their strongest.

Use broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen Protect all areas exposed to the sun, such as ear, back of the neck etc.

Sun protective clothing, wide-brimmed hat and UV – blocking sunglasses.

Enjoy the warmth of the sun but be sensible.

Prevention is key. •

Check your skin head to toe once a month.

These help to draw moisture out of the hearing aid once they have come into contact with water and it can be a good preventative measure to keep your hearing aids in one of these of an evening anyway.

What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy? Solution Focused Hypnotherapy differs from other forms of talk therapy because we do not focus on the past or delve deeply into the issues. My focus is on the future – how you want to be feeling and what you want to be doing – and helping you achieve positive outcomes. My aim as a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist is to empower you to recognise the skills and resources you already have and to discover the small steps which you can take to help you move forward and cope with the day to day challenges life throws at us.

WOLVERHAMPTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL EXPANDS ITS PROVISION Wolverhampton Grammar School is proud to announce the expansion of its Junior School to incorporate Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 from September 2021. This wonderful news means that Wolverhampton Grammar School will now become a true all-through school, providing the opportunity for children of all school ages (4-18) to join a truly unique community and experience our award-winning approach to education.

James Sage, Chairman of the Board of Directors for Wolverhampton Grammar School added “We are delighted to have been given the approval by the Department for Education to expand our education provision to children aged 4-18. High-quality teaching, devoted staff, small class sizes and our caring ethos in the Junior School allow our young children the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.”

The City’s leading Independent School recently received full approval from the Department for Education to increase the age range of the school, following a rigorous review of suitability by the Independent Schools Inspectorate. The new provision will benefit from remodelled classrooms featuring an inside-outside learning space as well as a purpose-built, beautifully landscaped Infant Playground within the School’s existing 25acre campus.

Wolverhampton Grammar School provides an outstanding education for children attending the Junior School, Senior School and Sixth Form. Constantly achieving outstanding GCSE and A Level results, providing the largest range of extra-curricular activities of any independent school in the area, and continuing to be the independent school of choice for parents of children from across the Wolverhampton, Shropshire, Staffordshire and wider West Midlands.

Dan Peters, Head of Wolverhampton Grammar Junior School commented

Demand for places across all year groups is high with only limited places remaining in Year 1 and Year 4 to 6 for September 2021. We encourage parents who wish to register their child for a place at our School to do so by visiting: www.wgs.org.uk, email our Admissions team admissions@wgs-sch.net or telephone: 01902 422939 to avoid disappointment.

“We are so excited that children will now be able to join us at the very start of their educational journey. Opening our doors to children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 from September means that we can ensure our pupils make the very best progress from the word go.” 45

Our

Education

SUCCEEDING IS ACHIEVING The breadth and success of our extra curricula offer is astonishing. Our sport has ranked us in the top six of all UK independent schools for the last seven years, not in one particular sport but across 26 sports. And in addition to the 280 sports teams we put out and all the musical ensembles, choirs and orchestras, our pupils have 110 other activities to choose from each week.

At Bromsgrove, we believe pupils are happiest when they are succeeding. We offer an all-round education, combining academic excellence with a richness of opportunity. Pupils engage enthusiastically with knowledge, embrace new ideas and are intellectually stimulated. We pride ourselves on the outstanding opportunities available, both inside and outside the classroom, whether at Nursery, Pre-Prep, Preparatory or Senior School.

There are easier schools to choose than Bromsgrove. We are proud of our 500 year old school. It is traditional, disciplined and very down to earth but it really is a dynamic and exciting place to be. Our mission is for Bromsgrovians to leave us as happy, creative, moral citizens who live motivated, fulfilled lives whilst enriching the lives of others and should you wish to visit to meet our young people and see what we do, you would be most welcome.

Bromsgrove pupils achieve first division academic performance not only in GCSEs, but also A levels, the International Baccalaureate and BTECs in Sport and Business. We teach and learn with passion and flair, but insist upon academic rigour. However, we recognise that there is little point in getting top grades if you are unable to engage with other people. So, each and every day at Bromsgrove there is time dedicated for developing other vital life and social skills. 46

WELCOME TO GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN’S JEWEL. by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist For those considering where to escape to, once travel restrictions have lifted, Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city, is located by the sparkling waters of the Kattegat Sea on its western coast, and as the sole gateway to the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, it is the largest of the Nordic ports.

dish from one of the little stalls, a microwave is on standby to heat it up, and most head for one of the little tables outside to take part in the popular sport of people- watching whilst admiring the enchanting views of the canal. Fishing remained the dominant industry until the Swedish East India Company, founded in 1731, opened up trade with the Far East and Gothenburg’s harbour became Sweden’s main port.

Gustavus Adolphus, founder of Gothenburg and King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632, endorsed the royal charter in 1621 and the city was designed and constructed by Dutch engineers, admired for their skill in draining and building on marshes. The Dutch held political authority until 1652, when the Swedes attained power, and in 1676 King Charles XI of Sweden ordered the construction of a series of zigzag shaped walls, lined with blasted rock, to protect the city. The fortifications were destroyed between 1807 and 1817 but a remnant of the bastion Carolus Rex XI remains on Esperantoplatsen, near to Feskekörka, one of Gothenburg’s many attractions.

The Swedish East India Company was responsible for constructing the charming stone houses around the canals. The East India House, located on North Harbour Street, is a fine example of the Classic style, and in 1861 it became the Gothenburg City Museum. A number of exhibitions provide the visitor with the opportunity to follow the history of Gothenburg from the prehistoric era to the present day, covering 12,000 mind boggling years. To learn more of Gothenburg’s seafaring history, the Maritime Museum, which floats on a pontoon in the Göta River, is popular. A fleet of ships, boats and barges with military and civilian ties, attracts hordes of visitors and includes a cargo ship, a destroyer, a lightship, a minelayer, a patrol boat, a port ferry, a tow boat and a submarine. Tours narrated in English take place at 11.30, 13.00 and 15.30

Feskekörka is an indoor fish market, known locally as the ‘fish church’ as the building resembles a Gothic church. Dating back to 1874, the fish market remains a hive of activity and is the ideal spot for a tasty luncheon. Visitors are welcome to select a pre-cooked fish 49

Our Travel masterpieces created by Van Gogh, Picasso, Rembrandt, Degas, Pissarro, Renoir, Cezanne and Gauguinl. Lose yourself in the depth of colour of Monet’s 1907 painting of water lilies and then take a leisurely stroll around the Fürstengerg gallery to view Nordic art dating from the 1880’s. Should you intend to purchase gifts for loved ones and like to rummage for a bargain in quirky little independent shops, then hop on a street car and head for Haga, Gothenburg’s first suburb, established in 1648 by Sweden’s Queen Kristina, daughter of King Gustavus Adolphus. Wander around the little cobblestone pedestrian streets, admire the charming wooden houses and explore the intriguing antique shops overflowing with treasures. You’re sure to be tempted to succumb to their charms.

hours. And next to the museum stands the Seamen’s Tower, built to honour the memory of 684 Swedish souls lost on board vessels during WWI. Follow the 194 steps up to the top of the tower, which soars 49 metres into the sky and you will be rewarded with a close up view of the bronze sculpture ‘Woman by the Sea’, created by Ivar Johnsson, which stands at the top of the tower, looking out over the briny. Gothenburg’s two million annual visitors are keen to explore and admire an abundance of attractions, including Liseberg, Scandinavia’s largest amusement park and recipient of two Michelin Green Stars. Features include Aerospin, a Venetian carousel; very popular with the ‘little ones’ and for brave hearts the Helix rollercoaster is the fastest and longest in Scandinavia and if that ride doesn’t raise your adrenalin take a seat on Mechanica, which spins 360 degrees and soars 30 metres above the ground. For those of us without a head for heights, Lisegerg’s Lustgård is an extensive park area which features hundreds of trees, plants, waterfalls and artworks. It’s the ideal spot to take a breather and plan the rest of your day.

And of course the Swedes are famous all over the world for their interior designs and you’ll find a wide array of interesting household goods and gadgets in department stores such as Designtorget, located on Vallgatan and Lagerhaus on Postgatan. Should you fancy a spot of up market and personal retail therapy, Avenyn, Gothenburg’s main boulevard, is crammed with chic boutiques enticing the most resistant passers-by to part with large amounts of Swedish Krona.

For art lovers, the Museum of Fine Art, located on Gotaplatsen, is a must. Feast your eyes on

HISTORY MADE AT GOLD-MEDAL WINNING HENCOTE An English vineyard has created history after winning a second gold medal for a red wine at the world’s most prestigious wine competition.

reflection on our ambitions for the vineyard to develop hand-produced, award-winning, eco-friendly and highly-sophisticated wines. “Hencote is a relatively small vineyard with just 23,000 vines producing around 30,000 bottles across eight varieties every year, and we were told when we set up that we were too far north to produce high-quality red wines.

The Hencote vineyard struck gold with its Mark I 2018 wine at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) – widely regarded as the Olympics of the industry. The award means the vineyard is the first in the UK to have won gold for two different still red wines, having previously picked up the award for its 2018 Amphora Pinot Noir in 2020.

“But this award is proof that our Mark I is a genuinely world-class wine and an endorsement of our ambition to establish Hencote on the global stage.”

It also means Shrewsbury-based Hencote – which was established only in 2016 by founders Andy and Dora Stevens – has now won two-thirds of the gold medals awarded to UK still reds in any IWC competition and one-third of the total gold medals awarded to any UK still wines at IWC competitions.

The gold medal wine, a blend of Pinot Noir, Précoce and Rondo grapes, was Hencote’s star performer at the International Wine Challenge 2021, where it also won a silver and four bronzes for its other offerings. The results mean that in total Hencote’s 2018 vintages have won a remarkable two golds, a silver and six bronzes at the 2020 and 2021 IWC competitions.

General Manager Mark Stevens said the latest gold medal was a testament to Hencote’s commitment to producing the highestquality wines in its own unique way.

Fellow General Manager Charles Stevens said the vineyard – which covers nearly seven hectares - was determined to become known as the best red wine producer in the country.

“We are thrilled to have been awarded a second gold because it is such a positive 54

Our

Leisure

“We are committed to producing wines of authenticity which reflect the vineyard’s surroundings and are produced in as natural a way as possible. “From the start we took the decision to plant mainly the classic grape varieties Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, notoriously difficult to grow in the UK, then concentrate on still wine – something the country is not well known for. But we believe that by doing everything the right way and concentrating all the time on quality, we can compete with the best wines in the world.

Mark, Andy & Charles Stevens tertiary notes and ageing potential which is astonishing from such young vines.”

“Our philosophy of minimum intervention in the vineyard is carried over to the winery where our winemaker Gavin Patterson focuses on allowing the wines to express their natural characteristics.”

Mark leads daily vineyard tours around the estate – famous for its stunning views across the Shropshire countryside and county town of Shropshire - and the wines are only available to buy direct from the estate or through its website.

Gavin said: “This top recognition helps to reaffirm our efforts in the vineyard and diligence in our winemaking approach. There is no wine from our first vintage of 2018 more deserving of this prestigious award than our red blend Mark I, now starting to show

“It’s an important part of ensuring highquality that we have a direct relationship with our customers and can track exactly where our wines are being consumed,” said Mark. The estate, which sits on a ridge next to the old riverbed of the River Severn just outside the town centre, is also home to a restaurant, a holiday home and luxury glamping accommodation. To find out more about Hencote and purchase its award-winning wines visit https://www. hencote.com/shropshire-vineyard/

WIN 6 BOTTLES OF AWARDING WINNING WINE The mixed wine case will contain 2x bottles each of our; Vivienne 2019 (Still White), Suzanne 2019 (Still Rosé) and Mark II (Still Red and successor to the gold medal winning Mark I).

Getting out and about is of vital importance, spread your knowledge around and enjoy a new circle of friends, who just seem to appear out of nowhere. You are becoming a magnet of love to those close to you.

Time is on your side so you can afford to be very choosy about what you want and what you buy. Don’t be afraid to negotiate and do yourself a deal. Control money before it controls you.

Our Motoring

SUZUKI VITARA 1.4-HYBRID - SZT Suzuki has entered the fray in the hotly contested hybrid market. The Suzuki system is slightly different. It consists of a 48volt lithiumion battery which is integrated in to the starter generating system, it sounds complicated, but to make it simple what it does, it assists the driver, writes Bob Hickman.

This electric assistance in addition to the 1400cc petrol 4-cylinder engine which produces 129bhp, is sufficient to give a top speed of 118mph and a 0-60 in 9.5 seconds. The important CO figures are 128g/km. Enough of the technical features, what was the Suzuki like? It is a great affordable SUV, its raised road driving position means it is reassuring to drive and there is an awful lot of choice within the Vitara range.

A clever ECU on the engine detects when the driver accelerates and uses the electric motor to assist and create extra torque, so if you press the accelerator quickly the engine motor will kick in. So it is not a pure hybrid, it is an assistance hybrid.

There is just one engine choice, but trims vary, there are 3 grades within the hybrid setup, SZ4, SZ-T, and the SZ5. 60

Our Motoring without stress.

All Suzuki Vitara’s are well equipped and have comprehensive levels of equipment. Even the entry level SZ4 has 7 air bags, dual sensor brake support, collision avoidance system, alloy wheels, DAB radio with USB and Blue Tooth connectivity, traffic line recognition, blind spot monitor, the list goes on. One important feature for me always is air conditioning.

Internal space is reasonably good, it has 5 seats and there was plenty of space in and around those seats. Boot space was more than adequate and I do like the factor that there is plenty of leg and headroom and with the adjustment for the driver then it is possible for anyone to get themselves quite comfortable.

If you pay more and go up to the SZT the wheels become slightly larger, there is a smart phone link and seat trims are modified, the top range has 17” alloy wheels, rather swish suede upholstery and a panoramic sunroof.

The only disappointment was the infotainment system, for some reason Suzuki have equipped the Vitara with a rather small size visual screen and in the day and age now, when we are used to bigger and better, I would have liked a larger screen, having said that all information was contained within, it was just a little difficult to read especially whilst on the move.

The Suzuki is an easy companion to drive, the 6-speed manual gearbox seemed to have a choice of ratios for all conditions and it is pleasing to note that even 5th and 6th could be utilised in and around town. The steering is nice and light which helps make squeezing in to that awkward parking space quite easy and

Suzuki as tested was priced at £23,249 on the road.

Take Five to Stop Fraud UK Finance is warning that criminals have been exploiting and adapting to Covid-19 with a growth in fraud and scams that target people online. Many of these scams harvest customers’ personal and financial details, for example through phishing emails or smishing text messages impersonating trusted organisations.

police. Criminals spend hours researching you for their scams, hoping you will let your guard down for just one moment. Stop and think: it could protect you and your money. • Stop: Taking a moment to stop and think before parting with your money or information could keep you safe.

Katy Worobec, Managing Director of Economic Crime at UK Finance reports that “Criminals have ruthlessly adapted to this pandemic with scams exploiting the rise in people working from home and spending time online. These range from investment scams promoted on social media and search engines to the use of phishing emails and fake websites to harvest people’s data.”

• Challenge: Could it be fake? It’s ok to reject, refuse or ignore any requests. Only criminals will try to rush or panic you. • Protect: Contact your bank immediately if you think you’ve fallen for a scam and report it to Action Fraud.

It is really alarming to hear of the increasingly sophisticated fraud that criminals are now subjecting on their unsuspecting victims. I know I have certainly noticed an increase in said phishing emails into my inbox and it is incredible how realistic some appear to be.

You have worked hard for your money so don’t let the fraudsters take it away! For more information and guidance please do take a look at the UK Finance website: www. takefive-stopfraud.org.uk

So, what can we do to protect ourselves… UK Finance is urging customers to follow the advice of the Take Five to Stop Fraud campaign and remember that criminals are experts at impersonating people, organisations and the

through the ranks comes at the right time for Talbots, after it predicted a 20% increase in fees over the next twelve months.

The independent law firm cast aside the pressures of the pandemic to support its trainee solicitors through their Training Contracts and will now be using their expertise to assist a growing client base across the Black Country, Birmingham and Worcestershire.

Rachel Pardoe, Director of Human Resources, commented: “We’ve scored a perfect 10 with our latest trainees, with all of them who started the Training Contract successfully passing - despite Covid-19 striking in the middle of their learning.

Chris Jones, Laura Underhill, Sharan Kaur, Jade Hinton and Jodie Wilding all qualified in the Residential Property department, whilst Ajay Sharma and Amy Marsh will be specialising in the booming New Build Residential Property arena.

“This is great news for the long-term expansion of our business and a real testament to the commitment, passion and knowledge of our new solicitors, who have mixed one-toone support with remote learning, socially distanced meetings and their Professional Skills Courses.”

They were joined by Sam Oakley (Childcare), Katie Jones (Dispute Resolution) and Rebecca Pickering (Commercial Property).

DOGGIE DANGERS LURK IN THE SUMMER By Libby Williams MHAO AHDip Animal Healer and Holistic Therapist www.libbywilliams.co.uk info@libbywilliams.co.uk 07966 639671 Long sunny days, ice creams, walks on the beach and fun with friends, summer delights that we and our dogs dream of. But this can also be a hazardous time for our precious ones, doggie dangers lurk in the summer!

cause liver failure and ultimately death. What is most concerning is that it is being used more and more commonly in peanut butter and other nut butters, it has several names, such as E967 and Meso-Xylitol so if in doubt don’t give it to your furry friend. A lot of pet parents use peanut butter in toys for their pets, so it is imperative that you check the ingredients to ensure that it is safe. Why not use a different kind of healthy treat in their toy, you could mash up some boiled egg or some nice cooked white fish or chicken, don’t forget to remove all bones you don’t want them choking and thoroughly wash their toys after they have finished.

Dogs can overheat when it’s too hot so it’s best to go for your walk early in the morning or late evening. Check the pavement to ensure that it isn’t too hot for your lovely one to walk on, a dog’s pads are sensitive and every year many poor souls end up at the Vets suffering with burnt paws. Ideally take a water bottle out with you so that your dog can have little sips of water if they want them. Ensure that you avoid going out with your dog all together between 12 and 3pm when the sun is at its strongest and if it’s too hot at other times then don’t walk at all.

Lurking in the long grass may be another summer danger! Ticks can be found all year round but summer is the most common time to for dogs to pick them up when they are racing through grass, shrubs or even piles of leaves. Tick bites can be uncomfortable and in unfortunate cases the dog can have an allergic reaction or worse contract tick transmitting diseases such as Lyme disease. It’s best practice to thoroughly brush your dog and then check them over after a walk especially under their front and back legs as well as in between their toes. More obscure places to look are their ears, eyelids and tails. If you find a tick it needs to be removed carefully, ask your Vet for advice if necessary.

Never leave your dog in a car on a warm day even if the window is open or the car is parked in the shade because this is still dangerous for a dog, they can overheat very quickly. Certain breeds of dogs are more at risk of heat stroke especially brachycephalic breeds (flat faced) like English Bulldogs and Pugs. Puppies and old dogs, long haired dogs, dark coated dogs, overweight dogs and those with medical conditions are also amongst those that are likely to suffer more easily so take care not to walk when it’s too hot. Many of us will be enjoying tasty treats in the warm weather but take care if you are sharing them with your dogs. There may be a hidden danger lurking called Xylitol, a sweetener that is used in many foods including peanut butter, yogurt, sweets, ice cream, cakes and jams. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and can

Enjoy the lovely warm days but keep a look out for the doggie dangers that lurk this summer! Always contact your veterinarian if you are ever concerned about your pet or think that they may have ingested something toxic or something that has not agreed with them. 70

Nick and Royston - Men's Hair The New Romantic Never has there been a better time to embrace length & texture. Long hair became a lockdown cult for guys and the Summer of 21 is going to be the season that we refine those over-grown locks resulting in heavy fringes and face-flattering textured crops utilizing the texture and movement that’s been gained over lockdown. Think head-turning, stylish statement hair! TOP TIP: the end result will be all based on your hair type - a bowl-like effect will be the result of thick & straight hair, so the key is to visit an experienced men’s hair stylist. You can leave it soft if you want more length – Remember, it has to be layered and texturized or it will look to bowl-like.

Statement Tones Say hello to a statement, stand out colour as we celebrate freedom in every way possible. Expect to see a myriad of seamless smokey greys, platinum and ash tones this summer. These colours are great for men who want to give their style a very fashionled look. Those who like a more stand out shade, should opt for platinum and smoky greys whilst the subtle and less dramatic option is a subtle ashy grey tone. These smokey hues are the perfect solution to compliment stylish cuts and summer complexions. TOP TIP: Visit a Colour Specialist and discuss tones that will compliment your individual skin-tone. Beautiful, seamless platinum hues require high levels of commitment! Before lightening, make sure that you understand the investment you will need to make in professional home care products and regular salon visits. We love the new Kerastase Blonde range to keep platinum tones cool and conditioned. 71

The Short Of It Classic, feature-enhacing men’s short hairstyles will never go out of style however, choosing a look to suit your faceshape and something that works with your hair texture is essential. Short hairstyles must be tailored to your specific needs and choosing versatile options is a must so that you can transform your look from the office to the bar. Whether you choose a classic pomp, a quiff, an undercut or any other style, make sure it is tailored to your features and hair type. TOP TIP: styling tips are critical! Your hairdresser is the expert and during your hair appointment take the time to ask about styling tips and tricks. You should leave the salon knowing how to control your hair, manipulate your style and which products are your go-to hair heroes.

Smooth Talking Forgive yourself for believing that unmanageable, uncontrollable and unruly hair is something that you must live with! This summer opt for smooth, easy to style and frizz-free looks by checking in to a salon for a Kerastraight Smoothing Treatment! Kerastraight is the quickest, easiest and most powerful smoothing system available. Whatever the length, you can banish your hair from frizz for months with an in salon treatment! Our Kerastraight treatment is often described by clients as life-changing! It is a semi-permanent hair repair and smoothing system that provides unrivalled condition, shine and strength. Top Tip: if you want to achieve a smooth style for poolside and sea-swimming wet-hair, try Kerastraight this Summer – it’s a great option for an easy, manageable look if you’re prone to frizz and uncontrollable waves as your hair dries
