Coldwell Banker Realty’s top Westport sales associates invest in their clients, businesses, and community.

PAYING DIVIDENDS

The top Westport sales associates for Coldwell Banker Realty invest in their clients, businesses and community. Winning strategies come in varied forms. While the top individual sales associate and top team at Coldwell Banker Realty in Connecticut differ in how they have achieved their success, the parallels are clear – they are each committed to providing superior service for their customers and clients.

goasklinda.com

As the #1 Coldwell Banker Realty Agent in Connecticut, veteran sales associate Linda Skolnick has lived and worked in Westport for three decades. Bringing enthusiasm and flair from her earlier career as a Buyer at Bloomingdales, Skolnick has adopted a geographical laser focus. “I almost entirely sell in only Westport,” says Skolnick. “I know what homes are coming on, what their attributes or issues are and how quickly they went under contract in the past.”

To amass this kind of comprehensive knowledge of the local real estate landscape, Skolnick has opted to work as an individual agent. “I want my clients to know that when

they choose me, they get me.” She feels that if someone connects with her, “They want my energy, my personality and my point of view.”

Skolnick has made a personal investment in Westport that ultimately benefits her clients. “I think it is important to have someone who has helped you buy or sell a home be part of your life.” These are relationships that last, due in no small part to Skolnick’s individualized attention and connection. She credits her success to the connections with her past and current clients along with her relationships with first-rate resources and professionals at her fingertips for her clients’ needs.

In acknowledgment of her cultivated alliances and extensive global relationships within international markets, she has been honored with the distinguished title of Global Luxury Ambassador for Coldwell Banker Realty. This prestigious designation is bestowed upon a select group of 21 individuals, meticulously chosen from over 100,000 agents spanning across 40 countries.

“I want my clients to know that when they choose me, they get me.”

The Bross Chingas Bross Team is the #1 Coldwell Banker Realty Team in Connecticut. Sales associates Barbara Bross, Alexander Chingas, Doug Bross and their team members have ranked #1 Real Estate Agent Team in Westport and Weston, Connecticut out of all agent teams at all brokerage firms 2013-2024 year to date*.

“The key reason Barbara, Doug, and I have reached number one and remained there is hard work,” says Chingas, referring to his partners Barbara and Doug Bross. “We have invested a tremendous amount into being subject matter experts because our clientele deserves top-notch representation when making decisions as significant and impactful as the sale and purchase of real estate.

We are also extremely well-versed in technology offerings,” he says, noting that Bross Chingas Bross has been providing immersive virtual visits to their listings for several years. “That allowed us to set our properties

“We want our clients to feel confident that we will help them efficiently navigate something they may initially find complex or intimidating.”
- Barbara Bross

apart once the market heated up due to the pandemic. We were already well-established with the virtual real estate process.”

Doug Bross also credits having two full-time employees – one focused entirely on digital and social media to display their credibility and sophisticated brand in a consistent way. The other staff member runs the office and manages document flow so that the team can focus on serving clients. “We are dedicated to connecting with people beyond our known sphere,” says Bross.

The team is protective of their client’s properties and their equity in them and strives to be trusted resources. “We want our clients to feel confident that we will help them efficiently navigate something they may initially find complex or intimidating,” says Barbara Bross. “We enjoy tailoring the experience to their particular needs.”

Bross, Chingas and Bross each laud the support they receive from the Coldwell Banker Global Luxury® program. “It helps us provide our clients with fantastic research to make good decisions, showcase properties to international audiences and connect with colleagues across the country and around the globe.”

Choosing Bross Chingas Bross and their team of agents means choosing trusted experts who invest not only in real estate but in the well-being of their clients, businesses and community, paying dividends that extend far beyond the confines of a property transaction.

You can experience the skills and services offered by Linda Skolnick and the Bross Chingas Bross Team by contacting the Coldwell Banker Realty Westport office at 203.227.8424.

Investing in Community

Hello neighbors,

Welcome to our Investment issue, which is here to show how many things "investing" can mean. For a more traditional definition, we visited Saugatuck Financial to hear how their unique approach to supporting both their clients and the Westport community at large has made them one of the top investment firms not just in town, but in the state. And Elyse Oleksak, author of the new book  A Shark Ate My Bagel and co-founder of Bantam Bagels, shares with us an emotional story of the investment that changed her life—when she got a deal on Shark Tank

We also explore some more unique ways to invest, like in yourself. Put some equity into having fun with the genius suggestions from writer Caroline Barney of ways to add a little joy into your life. Or pamper yourself at Artistex Salon and Spa, which we profiled as they celebrate their 25th year in business. Another worthwhile investment: your wardrobe! Laurie Perrin, the CEO of Roundabout, shares her top picks for buys that will stand the test of time. And you can follow along with Westport's Rene Prasad as she invested in the adventure of a lifetime—a trip to Antarctica.

Lastly, April is officially spring, and we have so many ways to take advantage of the season. Learn to plant a more beautiful, more sustainable garden with some of the area's top landscape designers, or kick back with an Earth Day inspired cocktail from one of our favorite local spots. Cheers!

Warm regards,

April 2024

Choose a team that will hold your hand through the process!

Danna & Jen sold our house and they were an amazing team. They helped us strategize pricing, timing, had beautiful pictures taken and wrote a descriptive listing that really showed our house in its best light. They were great with logistics and showings, even adeptly navigating some unexpected challenges. By the end of our first day on the market, we had four offers, all over asking. Danna & Jen helped us manage our offers with integrity so that we got the highest possible price and best closing date for our schedule. They are outstanding professionals in every aspect, from strategy to staging to negotiation and advising. They both have a wonderful way with people and a passion for real estate which is what makes them a great team! -

“"Our approach is full consultation… really customizing everything. Everything is specific and catered, not cookie-cutter."

At the end of 2018, Odete DaSilva expanded her business, Artistex Salon & Spa, from its 19-yearold, second-story home on Westport’s Main Street to a 4000-square-foot space on Post Road. Space had gotten tight, and Odete—who also serves as a Goldwell Academy Artist and works at fashion weeks in New York, London, Paris, and Milan—had dreams of offering everything from highlights to manicures to microcurrent facials.

“On Main Street, we could give a great service, but we didn’t have space to give a great experience,” she explains. The new spot offered a full salon, barber suite, tanning room, and a spa.

But as Odete and her team were getting settled, Covid happened. Odete made a point to prioritize the safety of clients and staff above all. "I worried about the business but I thought, ‘I’m gonna work this out,’” she says. “I wanted to make sure that if we were going back, we were going back safely.” Her thoughtful approach actually helped business. “People started seeking us out, for taking everybody into consideration.”

A personalized, genuine take is what has always set Artistex—which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year—apart. “Our approach is full consultation… really customizing everything,” Odete says. Hair color appointments, for example, account for the season, or if a recent vacation has lightened hair, while facials are less about layering product and more about what a client’s skin needs in the moment. “You are getting a treatment,” she says. “Everything is specific and catered, not cookie-cutter. There’s a clear sense of what a client’s needs are that day, instead of what service they booked.”

The salon also stands out for its sustainability efforts. “We have been committed to becoming more sustainable,” Odete says. Artistex offers the latest environmentally-friendly options for coloring hair and works with Green Circle, a program that helps salons dispose of and recycle salon waste (think: unused color, PPE like gloves, or hair clippings). “Salons have gone under the radar in terms of how much waste we create for a long time. We need to do better—and we can.” And Artistex is showing the way.

3 Reasons to Visit Artistex:

• Healthier Hair Color: “If there’s a redhead in this town, I probably do their hair,” jokes Odete, who uses non-toxic formulas like Goldwell’s Elumen and Top Chic Zero.

• Botox-Alternative Facials: The spa’s high-powered facials are ideal for the needle-averse.

• A Scalp Treatment that Promotes Growth: Keravive works like a Hydrafacial for your scalp, thoroughly cleaning to stimulate new hair growth.

C'mon, you know this looks fun. 42

Maybe it's time to join the

Fun can be good for you—if you know how to have it. Luckily, there is a fabulous wealth of opportunities surrounding us here in Westport. Go let loose! Here are some ideas:

TRY SOMETHING NEW

What’s your speed? A beachside sunset? Art class? Golf at Longshore? Star viewing at the Rolnick Observatory? Pickleball? A concert at the Levitt Pavilion? Kayaking down the Saugatuck River? A show at the Westport Country Playhouse? Plopping down in the sand at Burying Hill Beach with a cup of coffee in between meetings? There’s something out in our little slice of the world that’s not one of your same-old standbys, and that sense of novelty alone is fun!

You might discover a hidden talent.

CHANNEL YOUR INNER KID

Take a cue from the little ones— maybe sign up for something like ballroom, Latin, jazz, or contemporary dancing at one of the amazing dance studios in town. (They have adult classes!) You can also take an art class at Westport Continuing Education or join a sports league like the adult soccer team through the Westport Soccer Association.

You never know what you might see along the Saugatuck River.

LET YOURSELF LAUGH

Hear me out: could Winslow Dog Park be the place for this? I’ve been peed on and knocked over while there, so you never know what’ll happen when you take your pup to this dog heaven. There is almost always something amusing happening. Watching a Yorkie think it's going to take down a Great Dane—one bark at a time—never gets old.

TAKE YOUR TIME

Try leaving a few extra minutes between errands. Even little things— like grabbing avocado grilled cheese from The Granola Bar or picking up fresh flowers at Compo Market— can be more enjoyable if you’re not rushing.

EMBRACE THE BEAUTY AROUND YOU

April is the perfect month to see and experience the brightness of our surroundings. Take a drive around town and take in the daffodils. Grab a picnic and head to the Aspetuck Land Trust. And don't forget: bring your people. It’s exponentially more fun when we lean into our lives with each other!

There's always fun to be had at Winslow Park! Slow down and enjoy an avocado grilled cheese from The Granola Bar. Photo courtesy The Granola Bar.

Journey An Antarctic

TRAVEL JOURNAL | TRAVEL
RENE PRASAD'S GRAND EXPLORATIONS TRAVELED TO AN UNFORGETTABLE POLAR PLUNGE.

Anyone who’s researched a trip to Antarctica has heard of the dreaded Drake Passage. Considered one of the most dangerous stretches of ocean on Earth, it’s the stuff of legend (and more than one viral video of 40-foot waves pounding against cabin windows).

Leading a tour of 11 intrepid pole trekkers in 2023, Westport-based travel agent Rene Prasad, the owner of boutique travel agency Grand Explorations, was determined to avoid the treacherous stretch. Lucky for her group, she had the savvy to circumvent the potential ordeal by hopping a flight from Punta Arenas, Chile to an airstrip on King George Island, where a bus travels to a small cruise ship waiting just off the coast of the 5.4 million-square-mile continent.

“Off the coast” is the key phrase there, says Rene.

“You start on the plane in regular clothes, and about halfway through [the flight] they tell you to start getting ready. You put on boots and waterproof pants, because you get off the plane and then the bus and then you’re walking directly into the water to get to a Zodiac [a small, inflatable boat] that takes you to the ship,” she explains. “The water is 32 or 33 degrees and you’re wading right in it. The trip starts right there.” Once safely aboard the cruise ship with about 90 fellow travelers, they were off.

This was Rene’s first trip to Antarctica, the sixth continent she’s visited. But the vibe of the tour her boutique agency put together was the same as it would have been if they’d voyaged to well-traveled Rome or Rangoon: Grand Explorations builds oneof-a-kind journeys that open visitors’ eyes to new cultures, traditions, and perspectives.

The Antarctica trip included five nights on the cruise ship, which featured a communal dining room, relaxing library, and evening educational talks. “It’s not luxury, but it’s not roughing it either,” says Rene. “And much of the sailing is overnight, so you wake up in the morning and you’re in this other world.” Travelers could play games or cards, nap in their guestrooms, or stroll the decks on fair days. Luckily, the group had many. “It was sunny most days we were there and you could really walk around,” she says. “The landscape is very dramatic and just so big!”

As the ship toured around the continent, it passed research stations of many nations. Expert naturalists, geologists and historians helped explain the topography, scientific efforts, and the life and times of 20th-century Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton.

“You can’t visit Antarctica without talking about Shackleton!” Rene says with a laugh. The British explorer visited the continent numerous times in attempts to reach the South Pole.

Beyond the scenic vistas, another highlight is watching the wildlife. The group spied several bird species, seals, penguins and—of course—whales. On the first day, they sat in Zodiacs observing a few of the massive mammals surrounding them.

“They’re just beautiful,” Rene says. “It takes your breath away.”

The group also visited an abandoned whaling village, learning about the harsh lifestyle of those who lived there—and those who continue to inhabit the research stations. Current job listings often warn potential employees what they might be in for—like no running water, which can mean waiting for passing ships where they might be able to snag a hot shower every few days (or even weeks).

“You wake up in the morning, and you’re in this other world.”

For the daring, a few are given the chance to jump off the deck and into the waters of the icy continent—a true polar plunge. Rene says about 80 of the 100 people on board took the challenge, earning a warming shot of vodka and bragging rights for their courage. Most spent little more than a few seconds communing with the curious penguins.

Next up, Rene’s planning a May tour of Italy, a country that’s been tremendously popular with her clients since the pandemic. Her group will head for Emilia Romagna, a less-traveled northern region known for its seaside resorts. And in November, she’ll travel to Australia, on a trip that includes a few repeat clients. “We’ll all hit our seventh continent together!”

HOW SAUGATUCK FINANCIAL STRIVES TO MAKE SURE ITS CLIENTS—AND THE GREATER WESTPORT COMMUNITY—THRIVE.

MONEY THAT MATTERS

What does an investment firm look for in its employees? If you’re Saugatuck Financial, it’s capable, independent thinkers with strong values. Take Luke Andriuk, their director of investments.

Last year, when financial experts were a little wary of the economic waters,

“When a client is able to retire earlier than they thought possible because of planning we helped them implement, that’s extremely rewarding,” says Saugatuck Financial Founding Partner Justin Charise, a U.S. Army veteran who

"OUR JOB IS TO HELP TAKE EMOTIONS OUT OF THE PROCESS."

Luke was feeling optimistic. Now, as others in this precarious election year are fairly upbeat, Luke says he’s somewhat cautious, noting in many cases the best thing people can do during turbulent times is to stay put when it comes to major investment decisions.

“Investing can easily become an emotional endeavor, but our job as advisors is to help take emotions out of the evaluative process.”

Luke’s approach, along with that of his committed teammates, is one of the reasons Saugatuck Financial is consistently ranked as one of the top firms in the country among peers at Northwestern Mutual, and as “Best-InState” in several categories by Forbes. The 15-year-old company takes an individualized approach with each client and a comprehensive approach to financial planning. For Saugatuck Financial, a successful plan goes beyond the market to consider the client’s specific personal preferences and goals—and allows for many adjustments along the way.

worked for Goldman Sachs before venturing out on his own in Westport. “I wanted to have more control and a deeper effect on people’s lives, and to see that on a daily basis. We have a meaningful impact on clients’ lives, and that means a lot to me.”

That impact goes far beyond just building client portfolios. Alongside his wife Christy Charise, Saugatuck Financial’s chief marketing officer, the firm has challenged itself to commit $100,000 in charitable contribution and community involvement each year, investing in Westport and greater Fairfield County the same way their clients have invested in them. They’ve worked especially hard to support six key areas: education, entrepreneurship and leadership; veterans’ health; childhood illness and caregiver support; environmental and wildlife causes; people living in poverty; and organizations that are critical to our local communities and close to the hearts of our family, friends, team, and clients, explains Christy.

One look at the company’s website and social media accounts attests to how seriously they’ve taken this goal—you’ll see a busy calendar of fundraisers, local and global projects, industry workshops, and inspirational talks, all to make life better for their clients and, really, everyone who calls this region home.

Just a few examples: each winter for nearly a decade now, they have teamed with the Westport Fire Department and the Department of Human Services (DHS) to shop for and help deliver gifts to families served by DHS. An annual winter holiday party for clients and others includes ice skating, gingerbread house-making, sleigh rides, and hot cocoa.  The firm is a proud sponsor of the Westport Police Athletic League, which brings life lessons and leadership through youth sports, and they are helping Westport’s local wildlife sanctuary and education center, Earthplace, refurbish the popular Birds of Prey exhibit. Christy and Justin host combat-wounded veterans from the Catch A Lift program each year for a meal at their home. And recently, Saugatuck Financial brought motivational speaker Austin Hatch to Westport. When he was eight, Austin was in a plane crash that killed his mother and two siblings. Eight years later, he miraculously survived a

second plane crash that killed his father and stepmother. His talk proved memorable to both the Saugatuck Financial team and attendees, proving their commitment to inspiration goes far beyond the financial.

Twice, they’ve led a two-day in-service for other financial professionals from across the country, who look to Justin for advice and new insights. Does he worry about sharing some of his secrets to success with others?

“No,” he said, laughing. “There are so many people out there who need a financial partner. We appreciate the ripple effect of being able to have a positive impact on the financial lives of that many more clients – even ones who aren’t ours.”

AN INSIDER'S GUIDE TO BUYING PIECES YOU WON'T REGRET.

Some designer bags hold their value better than others.

When you buy something new, you want it to last a lifetime (or at least not regret it two days later!). Laurie Perren, the CEO of Roundabout Couture, a consignment institution in Westport  for more than 30 years, knows all about this— she’s watched customers bring in items for years, and she knows the true definition of the term “investment piece.” And consignment is a real litmus test for these items: they should be things you could keep forever—and if you do, you’d be smart to—but also something that sells quickly and at a high price point at somewhere like Roundabout. Westport Lifestyle spoke to Laurie to get her insight on what moves the fastest off their floor— in other words, how to know whether you’ve made a good fashion investment.

For starters, this is probably not a surprise, but there are a handful of accessories that almost always hold their value well— the number one being Chanel bags, explains Laurie. “They keep raising the prices of the classic bags, and the resale price also keeps getting higher,” she says. While you probably won’t take home more than you paid, you can still get a pretty big check back for selling a Chanel bag (Roundabout pays 66 percent commission on top-condition Chanel bags). Other brands in this echelon include Hermés and Louis Vuitton, which continue to raise their prices dramatically, meaning your purchase should continue to hold value for years. There are

some exceptions— hard-sided suitcases from Louis Vuitton, for example, don’t usually sell quickly or at high prices. “No one is gonna take those to the airport,” says Laurie. “They want wheels!”

While clothing doesn’t hold its value quite as well as handbags, brands like Vince and Theory that are known for well-made, classic silhouettes tend to do well, says Laurie. “Sweaters are a great investment as long as you take care of them,” she says. “We have cashmere sweaters from 40 years ago that are still cute and in just as good shape as they were back then.”

Outerwear is another strong category: leather moto jackets are a perennial favorite. “A good

leather jacket doesn’t really change,” says Laurie. And even though the Mob Wife aesthetic is trendy right now, Laurie says that vintage furs have always been a good purchase. “You’re not contributing to the [practice or demand] because you’re buying secondhand,” explains Laurie.

For spring, Laurie’s top investment piece is a good tweedy jacket (bonus points if it’s Chanel, of course). “You’ll have it forever,” she says. And you never know when you might find one at Roundabout!

Roundabout is located at 606 Post Road East in Westport or at roundaboutcouture.com.

"Above all, we focused on cultivating relationships."

In the summer of 2014, Elyse and her husband, Nick, filmed an appearance on ABC’s Shark Tank , seeking an investment in their bagel bites company, Bantam Bagels, which at the time was a small bakery in New York City. Lori Greiner ended up offering the Oleksaks a deal: $275,000 for 25 percent of their company. They took it on the spot. Life was never the same.

If you do Shark Tank right, you never go back to your regular life. As soon as we were done filming, we went to our hotel and probably laid in bed for 12 hours out of physical exhaustion, but we were on our laptops the whole time. There was smoke coming off the keyboards. If our segment made it to air (and they don’t guarantee it!) we needed to make sure we had Bantam Bagels set up as something people could search for and purchase, and that was like starting from scratch for us. What we knew was how to sell fresh bagels to people coming in off the street. For our bagels to be frozen and served in someone’s home, we had to go through research, development,

and testing. We needed to find somewhere that could package and ship frozen bagels. And people needed a way to buy the bagels; we needed a website that could handle the traffic, and this was before Shopify! We basically had to reinvent everything.

When our episode aired, about six months later, our website immediately crashed. We stayed up all night, sitting on our laptops in the back of a CVS because we didn’t have time to go home, responding to every customer and begging them to come back. Nick and I were both Division I college athletes at Columbia University (that’s actually how we met!), but we didn’t walk on campus that way— we had to fight our way there. That’s the mentality we tapped into when it came to starting and running a business: we’re gonna sprint until we puke, because that’s how we’d been taught to succeed. When we got on Shark Tank , we thought: OK, this is the Columbia of opportunity. Now we need to take what we’ve been given and make something of it.

The Bantam Bagels truck hit the road.

Above all, we focused on cultivating relationships. We would drop anything for Lori and her husband Dan. We stayed close with the Shark Tank production team, and we could tell them when we had big news, like our deal with Starbucks, or our deal with Delta. And we connected not just with the show, but with the audience. We showed our authentic selves to customers through our marketing, because we are who they connected with. The sales kept growing and growing. During this time, we moved to Westport, and it was like a gift. Our lives and business were so intense and chaotic, but this is one of the most supportive communities. I always know I can count on Westport. Being here was one of the things that kept us sane.

Eventually, we hit a point where we were growing too fast. The question became “Will we say no to sales, or seek outside money?” With our personalities, we were never going to say no to growth. We met with an interested party whom we felt a kindred connection, but because of the way their business was structured, the only thing that made sense was a full purchase of Bantam. It was so emotional— it was more than a sale. It was a way to keep our first baby alive. There was a lot of joy and relief.

Having gone through this incredible experience, I’ve had time to reflect on what it all meant to me. What I kept coming back to were the relationships. We could never have done this without the incredible people we’ve met. I felt like I wasn’t done with those connections– I wanted to give something back to everyone who had given me

something. So I wrote a book [ A Shark Ate My Bagel: How We Built Bantam Bagels , on Amazon now]. The book is really me saying thank you to everybody I have worked with or sold to over the years. It’s me saying: here's the impact that you had on me, and hopefully, I can give you a couple of nuggets of what I’ve learned along the way. And I want to keep giving back. My next goal is to start consulting with entrepreneurs to help them get their businesses off the ground.

All the ups and downs and the stress— when I think about the people we connected with along the way, I realize it was all worth it. Because of the connections we made, I can call our story a true success.

A GUIDE TO A MORE SUSTAINABLE, MORE BEAUTIFUL GARDEN.

How Does Your Garden Grow?

HOUSE CALL | HOME + DESIGN

Transitioning part or all of your yard to a sustainable garden can be, believe it or not, joyful, easy, and cost-saving. Sustainable gardens aim to minimize negative impacts on our ecosystem, conserve natural resources, and promote overall well-being for the human, animal, and insect populations in the area. As someone who “snoops” around in gardens doing stories for Designport, I’ve found that these are also some of the most beautiful gardens in town, replete with colorful wildflowers, willowy grasses, and organic compositions. Here’s a look at some gorgeous sustainable gardens we’ve seen, and a few ways you can greenify your own garden, including tips from local experts.

LOSE THE LAWN, MAKE A MEADOW

An easy and beautiful way to green-scape part of your property is to create a meadow in place of traditional turf grass. “Meadows not only promote biodiversity, prevent soil erosion, and improve water quality, but they also offer a visually appealing alternative to lawns throughout all four seasons," says landscape designer Allison Feuer. Additionally, meadows provide a habitat for beneficial insects and small animals during the winter, contributing to a healthier ecosystem.

SHOP LOCAL, NATIVE, AND DIVERSE

Whether you are making a meadow or creating a more sustainable garden bed, it's important to the health of our local ecosystems to use a diverse range of native plants that attract various pollinators, like birds, bees, and butterflies. Jay Petrow, the owner and principal designer of PetrowGardens Landscape Design and an instructor at the New York Botanical Garden School of Horticulture, says he won’t take on

a new project “unless I can enhance our ecology through the establishment of a new pollinator garden.”  He uses many native, drought tolerant plants in his landscapes which, in addition to supporting the environment, are generally more resilient and low-maintenance—a win-win. Another bonus, he says, this approach goes hand in hand with designing for maximum beauty: “Our gardens are colorful, complex in their physical structure, and always changing from spring through fall and into winter.”

According to Acquarion Water Company, the average suburban house uses at least 30 percent of its water for irrigation, even though more than 50 percent of landscape water is lost due to evaporation or over-watering.  Using water-efficient irrigation methods, like drip-lines, or using soaker hoses to deliver water directly to plant roots, can minimize some of this water waste.

You can also water your plants with gently-used grey water from your tub or washing machine.  Or consider buying a collection barrel to store rainwater running off your roof for irrigation. It’s a minimal investment: prices for the barrel system start at around $150.  Lori Cochran, the director of the Westport Farmers Market, has one at her home and uses the recaptured water to maintain her vegetable garden and planters.

While planning your landscape, also consider integrating bird feeders, bee hotels, and water features to let wildlife know they are welcome. Cochran’s tip? Save those non-recyclable take-out containers and use them to help hydrate small birds and animals in the hotter months.

Because summer will be here before you know it— but with these tips, your garden will be ready.

EARTHLY DELIGHTS

Earth Day serves as an annual reminder to appreciate everything that comes from our beautiful planet— and one of those things is  flavor. Earthy herbs, rich botanicals, and spring-fresh produce can accent a perfectly appointed cocktail that channels everything great about spring.

HIBISCUS MARGARITA FROM TERRAIN ingredients:

directions:

561 Post Road E.,  shopterrain.com

• 1.5oz. hibiscus-infused tequila (house-made)

• 1 oz. triple sec

• 1 oz. lime juice

• 0.5 oz. cardamom agave (house-made)

• 1 tsp. hibiscus salt, to garnish

Celebrate Earth Day all month long with these botanical-inspired cocktails.

Rim glass with lime, then coat with salt. Combine all other ingredients over ice, shake, and pour into glass.

“It’s typically our bestseller,” says Emily Smith, the director of operations at Terrain, of the floral-infused marg. “It’s got the delicate flavors of spring, but it appeals to a broad audience.” What’s not to love?

INDOOR PLANT GUIDE

Investing in indoor plants can not only spruce up your living space, but also bring numerous health and well-being benefits

SNAKE PLANT:

The Snake Plant is for anyone from a green thumb to a black thumb because anyone can grow it. These hardy plants can adapt to any environment and can live in both high light and low light.

HOPE PEPEROMIA:

The Hope Peperomia likes medium to bright direct sunlight. It does well as a tabletop plant or a hanging plant. Watering is only needed one time a month regardless of plant size.

Bringing the outdoors in with the use of house plants is a great way to add color and dimension to your space. We sat down with Jesse Nelson at Family Tree Nursery, based in Kansas, and discussed the benefits of incorporating plant life into your home.“There are plenty of studies on the health benefits of plants, and the evidence suggests that being around plants and caring for plant life increases overall wellness,” explains Nelson. “Anytime you bring a plant into a home or work environment, it’s going to make you feel better. It is going to beautify the space in a way that art cannot, and they also have the added benefit of  purifying the air.” There are a wide variety of indoor plants that work for any space and light situation that you may have. Regardless if you have a green thumb or a black thumb, there are plant varieties that fit your lifestyle. Here are a few of our favorite indoor plants to incorporate into your home.

ZZ PLANT:

The ZZ plant, which its formal name is Zamioculas Zamiifolia, is a very easy plant to care for. They like anything from low light to bright light. These plants are hard to kill and can go a long time without being watered.

FLORA LEVIN MD, FACS

Before an upper blepharoplasty and brow reconstruction.

After an upper blepharoplasty and brow reconstruction.

The Brows Have It

Oculoplastic surgeon Flora Levin on one of her popular procedures.

If you’ve ever seen a video about oculoplastic surgery, odds are it was Flora Levin, MD. She talks with Westport Lifestyle about her practice.

WESTPORT LIFESTYLE: WHAT ARE YOUR PATIENTS MOST SURPRISED BY?

Flora Levin: That they need to address their brows in addition to an upper blepharoplasty for the best results.

WL: WHY?

FL: The tail of the brow often descends as we age, which leads to heaviness and hooding of the outer portion of the eyelid. Unless restored, the result of the upper blepharoplasty can be less satisfying than when both the lateral brow and excess eyelid skin are addressed.

WL: DOES THIS MEAN TWO SURGERIES?

FL: Both are done at the same time. The outer brow is re-contoured from behind the hairline of the temple and the eyelid skin is removed with an eyelid crease incision. Notice that I did not use the term "browlift," which scares people!

WL: WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO DETERMINE WHAT YOU NEED??

FL: To have an in-person consultation. If eyelid hooding extends past the outer brow with heaviness or fullness, a brow re-contouring procedure may be necessary. You can also watch one of my videos discussing this!
