Investment by definition is the act of devoting time, effort, energy or finances to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result. We can invest in a lot of things, such as our community, our relationships, our finances and our health with the hope that the effort will have a positive impact.

We can invest in our community by supporting our local businesses, schools and local organizations. We can serve the community through volunteerism and investment in future generations. On a larger scale, we can participate in public surveys and stay educated and involved with future city planning. Investing in our finances helps create wealth, meets longterm financial goals and secures our retirement. On a personal level, we can invest in our families and enrich relationships by giving time and effort to the people in our lives that mean the most to us. This type of investment has the most meaningful impact to not only ourselves but to the people closest to us.

While investing in ourselves, relationships, community and finances can look very different from person to person, the effort we put into these areas of our lives are done with the common goal of having a positive impact that yields results. In this edition, we wanted to share about some of the ways that we can invest in our community, our finances and with those that we love.

Our commitment is to invest in you the community.

With Gratitude,

April 2024

Tips on how to reduce your arthritis pain. The positive impact of exercise. AND much more!

SEEDING BEST NEW IDEAS TO CREATE A WORLD WITHOUT CANCER

The St. Louis region’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event has found a new home. Formed solely for the purpose of ultimately “curing all cancers for everyone,” Pedal the Cause will hold its 15-year celebration and ride weekend Sept. 21-22 at the Family Arena in St. Charles.

Pedal the Cause has donated nearly $46 million—from 38,000 riders collecting more than 450,000 donations—in its

14-year history to fund adult and pediatric cancer projects. “Working to create a world without cancer,” the nonprofit organization held its most successful fundraising effort ever last year and donated more than $5 million to be used for the best new ideas in cancer research.

Pedal the Cause was founded by twotime lymphoma survivor, Bill Koman, who received treatment from the Siteman

Cancer Center in St. Louis. The nonprofit organization began and continues to follow the bold model of using 100 percent of participant-raised donations to fund critical cancer research.

To date, Pedal the Cause has funded 219 cancer projects producing groundbreaking results that lead to new treatments, cures, preventions and early detection diagnostics. “This ‘100 percent model’ is

made possible by the generous support of sponsors, led by presenting sponsor Edward Jones,” says Eleanor Goedeke, director of communications and marketing for Pedal the Cause.

“The hope is that we are finding treatments and cures that we can share with the world and that will ultimately lead to a cure for cancer.”

For every dollar Pedal the Cause donates to cancer research, an additional $12 on average is obtained through outside funding to continue this research, garnering $550 million for cancer research since 2010.

“Pedal the Cause has made a significant impact on my research and allowed me to pursue research that has been first of its kind not only regionally but also nationally and internationally,” says Katherine Fuh, M.D., surgeon and assistant professor in obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine. “The most promising result has been discovering a new pathway in ovarian cancer that causes cancer to spread. This could mean treating a patient with a drug to block the spread of cancer.”

Through its annual cycling challenge, Pedal the Cause provides funding for

cancer research in its earliest stages at Siteman Cancer Center, ranked a top 10 cancer center nationally by U.S. News & World Report,  and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

“Cancer research projects typically aren’t eligible for large federal or private grants until they have proven their initial concept,” Eleanor says. “Pedal the Cause donations ‘seed’ the best ideas to allow the cultivation of proof of concept and critical data. Over time, these projects have produced groundbreaking results that lead to new treatments, preventions and early detection diagnostics.”

Since 2010, Pedal the Cause dollars have accelerated research exploring, among other things, personalized vaccines, the genetics and DNA of cancers, and exciting developments in immunotherapy such as CAR-T and natural killer cell therapies.

Registration for Pedal the Cause 2024 opens March 25. Participants can ride, spin, volunteer, be an “Inspired” virtual participant or a Kids Challenge rider. Ten courses include distances of 10 to 100 miles.

“We have so much to look forward to,” says Pedal the Cause Executive Director David Drier. “Our new home in St. Charles is emblematic of our growth as a regional event. Our courses cross three counties, two states and two major rivers. Not only will the courses provide a safer, less crowded and scenic experience for our riders, but our new home gives us room to continue to expand and therefore increase our donation each year to fund vital cancer research. In our new home, the sky is the limit.”

BUYS EQUESTRIAN CENTER, VENUE PROPERTY Investing In A Tourism Destination LOCALLY SOURCED | ENTERTAINMENT 18
ST. CHARLES COUNTY PARKS STAFF
““The idea of being part of a larger family and joining the County Parks System will grow our strength and our opportunities.”

St. Charles County officials purchased the 54-acre National Equestrian Center (NEC) for $5.9 million to preserve its use as an essential equestrian center and to parlay it into a regional, statewide and national entertainment destination and special events venue.

Located at 6880 Lake St. Louis Blvd., St. Charles County Parks Director Ryan Graham says there’s nothing like the NEC for more than a hundred miles around.

“Without the NEC, your big horse shows that need hundreds of stables for horses, they just couldn’t fit anywhere else,” Ryan says. “They’d have to go to either Sedalia, Mo., or Springfield, Ill.”

The site features three arenas, six barns, 585 horse stalls, 63 camping spaces and almost 4 acres under roof. The main show area features more than 5,000 square feet of upper-level banquet space that can seat up to 250 people overlooking the arena.

“It’s a tourism destination that attracts people from around the country, and we look forward to carrying on the tradition of hosting high-quality equestrian events, and expanding the offerings of the center,” Ryan adds.

This space is available to rent for wedding receptions, birthdays and special occasions.

In St. Louis County, Queeny Park hosts a handful of equestrian competitions, but on a much smaller scale. Boone County no longer operates an equestrian facility.

Ryan says the site could be used for events and other public activities, from rodeos to music festivals, barbecue competitions, car shows, cornhole tournaments, antique shows, flea markets and dog shows. He says the center also provides the opportunity to introduce kids and families to the art of riding, handling and training horses and the recreational, emotional and therapeutic benefits of doing so.

“NEC is most excited about having more support for our operation,” says NEC Facility Director Dana Jensen. “The idea of being part of a larger family and joining the County Parks System will grow our strength and our opportunities.”

Operated since the 1990s by Carmelo Natoli (of Natoli Engineering fame), the center's been managed by surviving family members after his death in 2012. With developers seeking to convert the site to new homes, the Natoli family reportedly approached county officials asking that the NEC be saved for equestrian use and as a greenspace.

Plans call for keeping the center fully operational with its existing show schedule, while the St. Charles County Parks Department staff takes over day-to-day administration. The new park complements two other County parks where horseback riding trails are provided: Broemmelsiek Park and Indian Camp Creek Park.

County Executive Steve Ehlmann has attended horse shows at the facility and has been impressed with the operation and pledges to maintain the same high standards.

St. Charles County Council members also authorized contract revisions with Family Arena operators to support NEC as a county park as associated with requests from performers, dignitaries and event organizers, and for the purchase of items for resale at the Family Arena and the National Equestrian Center, including food, beverages, hay, shavings, merchandise and other items.

Examples of events scheduled at NEC for April include: NEC April at the Arch Dressage Shows I & II during April 6-7; Bridlespur Society Horse Show April 10-13; Mid Rivers Saddle Club Horse Show April 20-21; and Vintage Market Days St. Louis April 26-28.

‘CLEAN LIVING’ SUCCESS RECIPE

Advice Editorial: Invest In Protecting Personal Consumption, Body, Home

Consumption:

• Choose organic, whole foods with few ingredients as possible to avoid pesticides and additives.

• Read labels carefully; avoid processed foods with artificial ingredients (sweeteners, fillers, stabilizers, thickeners, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors and colorants).

• Get personal water tested and choose a filter based on results.

• Opt for high-quality supplements, as cheaper options may contain inferior or synthetic ingredients, which can be less effectively absorbed by the body.

Body Products:

• Use natural skin care and personal care products, free from harsh chemicals.

• Check for certifications such as USDA Organic and EWG Verified. Use apps like Yuka to check for clean ingredients.

• Consider DIY skin care using simple, natural ingredients like butters, oils, essential oils and waxes.

Home Environment:

• Use eco-friendly cleaning products made from natural ingredients. Beware of greenwashed products.

• Invest in air purifiers to improve indoor air quality.

• Consider DIY, low-tox cleaning kit with vinegar, baking soda, castile soap, salts and quality essential oils.

FREEDOM From PAIN

A new option is now available for those living with pain. Regenerative Therapy is an innovative technology designed to activate a body’s own healing. The goal is to repair and regenerate damaged tissues without the use of medication or procedures, such as injections and surgery.

This approach is accomplished by triggering a body’s own natural healing power to repair injured tissues, decrease inflammation and decrease pain. The advantages are faster healing, non-invasive, less downtime, drug-free and most effective pain relief.

HouseFit offers EMTT and Radial Shockwave, both of which are approved by the FDA.

This has been a game changer for those living with chronic pain. People who have tried everything else out there without success are now seeing amazing results. We are giving people their lives back.

Patients are experiencing significant improvements in a few short weeks, allowing them the freedom to return to a life without pain. Investing in one's health today will pay dividends in the long run. Phone 314.939.1377 for a free session.

PAY IT Forward With INTENTION

WHY IS 'PAYING IT FORWARD'  IMPORTANT TO YOU?

"I read the book, 'Pay It Forward' by Catherine Ryan Hyde, and the premise behind this fictional book blew me away. That we could change our world for the better by intentionally paying it forward. A fiction book COULD be true. And if it COULD be true, why not help it BECOME true?"

WHAT IS NEEDED TO REALIZE  THIS DREAM?

"Make a commitment to finding a way to pay it forward with intention three times. Asking each person you help, to pay it forward with intention, just three times in their lifetime. This is not buying a cup of coffee. It’s more intentional."

WHAT DO YOU MEAN, 'MORE INTENTIONAL?'

"Thinking about ways you can really help someone…maybe an individual, family or perhaps a nonprofit organization. Helping an individual find a job. Or helping an elderly neighbor in an ongoing way, like helping with their yard or shopping for them. Maybe help a family find a new home or if they have a specific need you could help with. One of my favorite ways to 'pay it forward with intention' is with local smaller nonprofits."

GatewayToDreams.org

Here are some local nonprofits to consider for paying it forward with intention:

Baskets for kids in need; AlleluiaBaskets.org

Summer camp for inner city youths; TorchBearers2.org

Support for breast cancer patients; FaithThroughFire.org

Racial equity issues; ARedCircle.org

Donate furniture and household goods; HomeSweetHomeStL.org

RETIREMENT INCOME PLANNING: MAXIMIZING WEALTH AND LEGACY

YOU ONLY GET ONE RETIREMENT

Retirement marks the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and sound financial choices. A key element of effective retirement planning is diversifying your income sources. While staples like 401(k)s or IRAs are foundational, it's equally important to branch out.

Tax considerations significantly influence retirement strategies. Each financial action, from asset sales to account withdrawals, can carry tax consequences. Knowing these details can greatly influence one's overall retirement income. Tactics such as Roth IRA conversions can help distribute tax liabilities over time, allowing for tax-free withdrawals later on. Using strategies like tax-loss harvesting can balance out capital gains, ensuring proactive steps to reduce tax impact.

SOURCES OF INCOME DURING RETIREMENT

Annuities have long been recognized as a popular retirement income source. An annuity is essentially a financial contract that can offer a steady and predictable income, with options that might even extend to lifetime payouts. Retirees should also be aware of certain drawbacks. These might include fees

and expenses, issues around liquidity, and potential concerns related to inflation.

Delving into the world of Alternative Investments, retirees can consider assets such as hedge funds, private equity and real assets, among others. These investments may promise higher returns and provide diversification away from traditional stocks and bonds. However, the complexities of these investments mean they often come with challenges like illiquidity, higher fees and the need for a thorough understanding of the investment itself.

The backbone of many retirement plans, Social Security Income, provides a safety net for millions. Established with the intent of financial assistance, the amount one receives depends on various factors. There are also strategies retirees can employ to maximize these benefits, such as deciding on the optimal time to claim or considering the implications of working while receiving benefits.

You only get one retirement. In the ever-evolving world of finance, staying updated and flexible is essential to ensure the continued relevance and efficiency of one's retirement strategy.
