Making It Count

It is tax season and matters of finance are coming into focus this month. For many of us, we have seen costs rise and the needs of our families still as great as ever. In this issue, we seek to provide some ideas and advice when it comes to the health of our bank account. While we try to budget well for our families, do our children truly appreciate the value of a dollar? That is why Chance Howard, father and mortgage broker, lends us his tips for teaching children financial literacy and habits to create their own savings and success.

However, as this issue is titled 'Investment', it is important to note that money is not all that can be spent or even wasted. What may be even dearer than money is time. So how do we invest our time wisely and make memorable moments for ourselves and our families? Carving out time to be present with our loved ones is priceless and we may just have a few ideas for you on that score too.

Finally, as a Queen Creek resident, you have chosen to live in a town with a bright future. Queen Creek is growing and to answer the demands of a town full of vitality and a desire for community, we speak to the town about the development of upcoming parks and trails. As these areas grow and come online, such as Frontier Family Park and the next phase of Mansel Carter Oasis Park, the anticipation for exciting new places to take our family and pets only heightens.

Investment is simply putting our money and our time into something that we hope will flourish into an even greater reward in the future. So invest wisely, be patient, and know that every little bit counts.

CHANCE HOWARD HAS SOME IDEAS ON HOW TO TEACH YOUR KIDS FINANCIAL LITERACY.

Our children are so important to us, and we invest both of our time and our money in them. Yet, how do our kids see themselves in relation to the bank of mom and dad, and how do we make sure they don't assume it grows on trees? Mortgage broker and owner of Howard Funding LLC, Chance Howard, is the father of two with ten years of experience in finance, and has some tips on how to teach financial responsibility to your children.

Chance believes it is never too early to teach your kids about money. First, he says it is important to discuss what money actually is. You can start with coins and establish their value and what that can equate to. In the process they can also learn simple maths by counting. Next, you want to show them ways they can begin to earn and save up their own money.

MONEY MATTERS | EDUCATION 12
Chance Howard

Chance says that as a kid, along with his siblings, he was taught the value of hard work, chores, and contributing to his family. His efforts would earn him some money from his parents, such as a trip to the movies. For his kids, Kadence and Steele, Chance decided to motivate his daughter to earn five dollars for every goal she scored at soccer. By the age of five she had managed 3-5 goals in a season. However, Chance laughs that he has gotten into trouble lately, since at 8 years old she has managed to score enough to earn $150. Chance insists this is one way to establish the concept of motivation to earn. Kadence not only benefits from increasing her skills on the field, but also reaps some additional monetary rewards for her efforts.

Allowance money for good grades, behavior, tasks or chores can be an early method in cultivating that motivation. Once they have earned money, it is important to have a conversation about saving and not spending all you have worked hard for. Interestingly, Chance then says that after you have discussed this you should let your kids make the final decision to spend or not, and what they spend it on. So if they do end up wasting their money on a cheap toy that falls apart soon after, they have learned an important lesson, however bitter it might be.

Whether they lose it all or save for a rainy day, make sure to follow up with another conversation about their choices and asking them if they enjoyed it or learned anything from their experiences. Finally, talk to them about their future. Their piggy bank might not hold a fortune but it could be the very beginning of one. Chance advises to talk to your kids about how they see themselves in the future, their job, their lifestyle, a house, a car, or even travel. Then talking in an open and frank manner about what that would take and how saving and working hard could get them there if they plan right.

Chance says that our finances can dictate a lot of our quality of life. Feeling secure and learning the value of money can save them a lot of stress and hardship down the line. Chance also says that talking about where true happiness comes from helps to put things in perspective. Instead of 'keeping up with the Jones's' and losing sight of what really matters. In today's consumer culture it is easy to get swept up in the latest fashion trends or high tech gizmos, that is especially true for younger generations. Chance calls it the 'Principle of Patience' and says that teaching our kids to save for really impactful investments like a house, a car, or a college degree will contribute greatly to securing brighter futures. Therefore, Chance advises parents to 'keep talking and teaching'.  Transparency and setting an example in your own spending habits goes a long way with our kids too. Invariably, an open discussion on money leads to one about priorities, dreams and how much our kids and their success mean to us.

STEPS TO TEACH KIDS ABOUT FINANCIAL LITERACY

1. Teach what money actually is. Show them their values and what they can buy.

2. Create motivation to earn. Allowances or rewards are a few ways.

3. Teach them to save and not spend. Delay gratification.

4. Let them make mistakes. Having real world experiences can be helpful.

5. Review their lessons. What could they have done better or done differently?

6. Talk about the future. Make plans, set goals, and expectations.

PECAN LAKE ENTERTAINMENT IS THE PERFECT PLACE FOR FAMILY FUN.

Queen Creek has been known for 'agritainment' attractions, yet the recent addition of Pecan Lake Entertainment has brought another place for family fun that is unlike anything else in the East Valley. Owners, Audra and Tim Campbell and Jason and Tiffany Check, wanted to give the residents of Queen Creek something unique for all ages. Brother in laws, Tim and Jason, both helped envision this project to what it is today based off of their step father & father in law's original vision of actually adding on to the gardens and Pecan Lake.

Now, the site boasts a ropes course with zip lines, axe throwing, escape rooms, karaoke, and virtual reality games. The mini golf, designed by Camron Howell of PuttTek, can be booked in advance online for convenience. Caldwell County BBQ also whips up delicious quality meats and sides to feed the whole family, while those with a sweet tooth can enjoy cookies and baked goods from Soda Rush or ice cream from Skytime Creamery.

There is more planned for later this year, including a surfing pool with an attached restaurant and viewing area, a Go Karts course that is both indoor and outdoor, an arcade, and a pizza place. The Botanical Garden requires admission but fishing is included with a license. Farmer's markets and garden classes are also going to be offered soon. There is something for everyone in the family to enjoy all year round. www.gopecanlake.com

Ways To Save

TIPS AND RESOURCES TO HELP YOU SAVE MORE.

Things start to add up, and in this economy every penny needs to stretch that much farther. Here are just a few ways to help you be kinder to your wallet.

GET A LIBRARY CARD.

Did you know the library not only is a place to borrow books and movies but there are free art culture passes to many nearby attractions and parks around the valley. There are also free workshops, kids activities, internet and tutoring resources, and even free seeds for your garden!

JOIN FREE INITIATIVES

Yes, it's true! By joining Freecycle Network or the Buy Nothing Project you can see who is giving away items from sofas to halloween costumes in your area. These initiatives started as a way to connect neighbors, exchange items, and keeping usable stuff from ending up in the landfills. Free is possible!

CANCEL OLD SUBSCRIPTIONS

Don't have a leaky wallet! Find old, unused, or overlooked memberships and subscriptions and cut them loose. Everything, even your finances, may need a good spring clean now and then, so catch anything you might not be using or simply don't need and move on.

CHECK AND UPDATE INSURANCE RATES

It can feel like a chore, but don't just accept the rates you have been given for any of your auto or home insurance. You should shop around, get some recommendations from friends and family and make a few calls to find the best rate. In the end, you can always go back to your original insurer and ask them to do a price match. You might be pleasantly surprised!

EATING OUT LESS

I know, I know, we love that coffee run or that favorite sandwich place. However, when you add up the cost of a daily visit for a caffeine kick, it can all add up. Think about brewing a cup to go from home or packing a lunch. Or you can reduce your eating out by half or more per month and save up over time.

CASH BACK APPS OR COUPONS

There is an app for that! There are several resources out there which can help you save or even earn money as you shop. Apps like Rakuten, Ibotta, and Shopkick can all help you get money back or coupons on some of your favorite places to shop from retail to groceries. They may also offer coupons and savings too. Other apps like Checkout51 give you cash back on gas and groceries while Dosh works with dining out and hotel stays too. Social Nature offers free samples of healthy products or discounts on others. You can also use apps like Gasbuddy to compare and search for the cheapest gas in your area. The chance to save and earn has never been so easy.

DRY JANUARY...DRY APRIL!

Going alcohol free in January has been a growing trend each year post the New Year's Eve hangover. However, consider going alcohol free in April too. You will save money and achieve some health goals at the same time. Wine and beer are not the only ways to wind down, plus the money saved might just shock you.

There are several resources out there which can help you save or even earn money as you shop... from retail to groceries.

QUEENCREEK' S FUTUREPARKS

The future of Queen Creek's parks system is just getting started. If you have lived here for a few years you may be familiar with Mansel Carter Oasis Park and Founders' Park, among others. Deputy Director of Community Services, Adam Robinson, says that the growth of Queen Creek requires the parks and trails to grow with it too. Therefore, exciting new projects are just on the horizon.

Frontier Family Park will be the first to open later in 2024. The park will include an all-inclusive playground, baseball field, pickleball courts, multi-purpose fields, and a 5-acre fishing lake. The large playground includes digifuse panels that incorporate imagery of Queen Creek's crops and wildlife. The name of the park is a nod to the history of Queen Creek's homesteading families who settled here and worked the land.

Queen Creek invests in an exciting parks system that residents will love.
MUST SEE | LIFE + CULTURE 28

Meanwhile, Mansel Carter Oasis Park's phase II  is also underway and will add tennis courts, volleyball, pickleball, and a pump track. Perhaps the most exciting project will be the new Recreation and Aquatic Center, a first for the town. The 7,000 square foot building will house a gym, indoor courts, fitness rooms, multi-use classrooms, a teen room, lockers and more. The much anticipated Aquatic Center will have a lazy river, 4 slides, a competition and lap pool, a zero depth entry play pool, and space for birthday parties.

There are also long term plans to improve and connect the Queen Creek Wash trail system which will eventually become a 13-mile loop. The trail is one aspect of Queen Creek's parks system that sets it apart since it has two natural washes and is popular with many runners and cyclists. As existing parks are updated, enhancements may include increased shade fabric sails, trees, and water play to address the heat for use all year long.

The town conducted a robust public outreach and survey to understand the needs of the community. As a result, the feedback was important in guiding the planning and design of these sites. The town's master plan has a ten year vision and there are still future potential sites too. So as new parks open, families will discover more opportunities for recreation, sport, and community. Adam says that Queen Creek is dedicated to providing quality parks to residents, and spaces like these are an integral part of quality of life, to gather, connect, and stay local.

RETIREMENT INCOME PLANNING: MAXIMIZING WEALTH AND LEGACY R

YOU ONLY GET ONE RETIREMENT

Retirement marks the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and sound financial choices. It's often envisioned as a period of relaxation, exploration and deep connection with family and friends. However, this dream doesn't just manifest. It necessitates forward-thinking and detailed planning, regardless of one's financial status. Amid global economic changes, evolving life expectancies and intricate tax systems, an all-encompassing and strategic retirement plan is more crucial than ever.

A key element of effective retirement planning is diversifying your income sources. While staples like 401(k)s or IRAs are foundational, it's equally important to branch out. Dividend-bearing stocks can provide regular dividends, bonds offer both periodic interest and principal return and real estate, whether directly or indirectly owned, has potential for both rental income and value growth. Private investments can also yield passive income and impressive returns.

Tax considerations significantly influence retirement strategies. Each financial action, from asset sales to account withdrawals, can carry tax consequences. Knowing these details can greatly influence one's overall retirement income. Tactics such as Roth IRA conversions can help distribute tax liabilities over time, allowing for taxfree withdrawals later on. Using strategies like tax-loss harvesting can balance out capital gains, ensuring proactive steps to reduce tax impact.

SOURCES OF INCOME DURING RETIREMENT

Annuities have long been recognized as a popular retirement income source. An annuity is essentially a financial contract that can offer a steady and predictable income, with options that might even extend to lifetime payouts. Available in varieties like fixed, variable and indexed, they often come with tax advantages. However, retirees should also be aware of certain drawbacks. These might include fees and expenses, issues around liquidity, and potential concerns related to inflation.

Delving into the world of Alternative Investments, retirees can consider assets such as hedge funds, private equity and real assets, among others. These investments may promise higher returns and provide diversification away from traditional stocks and bonds. However, the complexities of these investments mean they often come with challenges like illiquidity, higher fees and the need for a thorough understanding of the investment itself.

Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs), while not familiar to everyone, can be a potential retirement income source. Historically rooted, DSTs offer a form of passive real estate investment, which can lead to regular distributions. They also open doors to 1031 exchange possibilities, offering tax deferral benefits. But, just like any other investment, DSTs have their limitations, notably the lack of liquidity and the heavy reliance on trust management.

Introduced by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, Qualified Opportunity Zones (QOZs) were designed to spur economic development. Investing in these zones can lead to deferral, reduction and even the potential elimination of certain capital gains taxes. However, they often require a long-term investment horizon, and retirees must be well-versed with the specifics of the chosen opportunity zone.

Rental income remains a favorite for many looking for consistent returns. Whether through direct property ownership or Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), real estate can offer passive income, tax benefits and appreciation. Yet, the

responsibilities tied to property management, the uncertainties of market fluctuations and other associated costs must not be ignored.

The backbone of many retirement plans, Social Security Income, provides a safety net for millions. Established with the intent of financial assistance, the amount one receives depends on various factors. There are also strategies retirees can employ to maximize these benefits, such as deciding on the optimal time to claim or considering the implications of working while receiving benefits.

ESTATE PLANNING AND PHILANTHROPY

Beyond the immediate realm of retirement, estate planning emerges. This encompasses not just post-retirement arrangements but also asset distribution for future generations or charitable endeavors. Regularly reviewing wills, trusts and beneficiary designations ensures alignment with changing circumstances.

Philanthropy seamlessly integrates with retirement plans. Beyond fulfilling a personal mission to give back, it also carries financial benefits. Using instruments like donor-advised funds or charitable trusts lets individuals make impactful societal contributions while enjoying tax advantages.

You only get one retirement. In the ever-evolving world of finance, staying updated and flexible is essential to ensure the continued relevance and efficiency of one's retirement strategy.
