This is our Investing Issue, so I toyed with what to feature for our cover story. I wanted something strong- something that screamed success, so it took me a while to have an epiphany.
In the middle of the night when my body often awakes with a thought, it came to me... Danica Patrick. The coolest chic that ever happened to racing turned mega entrepreneur bursting with creative endeavors. Danica is the epitome of investing in one's self, actively working towards her personal growth and well-being.
Lo and behold, the Valley superstar was totally on board with a story leaving me totally stoked.
We arranged an interview via Zoom even though I'm dying to drink some Danica Rosé with Danica herself... but I guess we have to start somewhere.
As a former TV reporter, I had a bunch of questions prepared, but our interview immediately morphed into a friendly exchange- Danica was fun, personable, authentic, candid, and kind. In fact, while I promised I'd stay within a 20 minute interview, we connected for the full 45 minutes that Zoom allotted, and I nearly pulled my hair out when we got cut off. However, the moment Zoom shut us down, Danica pinged my email willing to hop back on and finish our conversation. And so, we continued chatting for another 20 minutes.
So is said that people need 7 streams of income to become a millionaire, but what I learned from Danica is you also need immense self-assurance, curiosity to seek truth, and a ton of passion, grit, tenacity and utter intensity.
While she's retired from racing, Danica now dreams up ideas and makes them happen. She loves wine, so she started a winery. She loves a healthy home, so she started a candle collection. And she loves learning, so she started a podcast.

Here’s everything you need to know about embarking on aircraft ownership.
Having an aircraft means it’s available for personal or corporate travel on demand. To justify your investment, consider the number of hours you fly per year. If those hours are between 50-100, you’re better off chartering (renting). However, if your fly time exceeds 100 hours a year, consider a shared or whole ownership structure. Time is money and the flexibility of private jets offers convenience, privacy, and efficiency.
For purchasing a pre-owned aircraft, initial steps are identifying a mission profile and determining your capital/operating budget. Also in the early stages, you’ll want to secure your route for financing. Once your broker identifies an aircraft within the target budget, they’ll make an offer with a deposit by way of LOI.
After completing an initial visual cosmetic inspection, your broker will proceed to an Aircraft Purchase Agreement with the help of aviation legal counsel. The aircraft then proceeds to a PrePurchase Evaluation. Your aircraft broker is the key to negotiation and carefully handles every step.
This process is different for a new aircraft. Today, most OEMs have a two year waitlist.
New airplanes are awesome, but a 10-year-old aircraft is equally cutting edge, particularly with upgrades.
There is value in buying a used plane with good pedigree. This means you’re buying an aircraft that was well taken care of, exceptionally maintained, and stored properly in a hangar.
Each generation of aircraft makes substantial improvements over the last. In the ultra-long-range category, onboard showers have become an option. Newer planes are quieter with an enhanced cabin altitude making for a more relaxed flying experience. Modern planes are equipped with WIFI.
Some owners prefer to fly themselves, but you don’t have to sit in the driver seat to own a plane.

Premium hangars are available around the Valley. Scottsdale and Sky Harbor are favorites at premium prices, but there are additional hangar space at other airports.

A typical super mid-size aircraft with a stand-up cabin can travel 3000+ Nautical Miles meaning it can travel coast-to-coast (for example, easily accessing Hawaii from Arizona). These models typically cost between $22-25M when new, while a 10-15-year-old aircraft can be less than $10M.
A long-range aircraft like the Gulfstream G600 or Bombardier Global cost upwards of $50M, while a used stablemate (with a different model name) can be between $15-30M.

Not much. You’re super present in the moment. You’re taking it all in and letting your instinct take over. You’re feeling the car and you’re watching the cars around you.
SO YOU’RE NOT SINGING SONGS IN YOUR HEAD?
Rarely. I remember one time in Michigan; it was a long track with a long straightaway, and I had a Miley Cyrus song stuck in my mind. I was like, ‘Oh, Danica, this isn’t helping anything; it’s fun, but not helping.’
YOU’RE ONE OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL WOMEN IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICAN OPEN-WHEEL CAR RACING; WHAT WAS IT LIKE TRANSITIONING OUT OF RACING?
The parts of racing I loved most was this ability to do better than the year before and have that potential and hope. I love the progress of any given journey. And so, I let fate and the universe handle my transition out of racing and learned the lesson of letting go of something instead of feeling like it was me quitting. I’m good with change.
WE’LL DIVE INTO YOUR MANY BUSINESSES, BUT ANY NEW IDEAS ON THE HORIZON?
I think my newest thought is a billion-dollar idea.
Most people aren’t great at driving; people are terrible on the road, and it’s annoying. So, my solution is to start a driving school, because the reason why I’m good at driving on the regular road is because I have a large comfort zone from the racetrack.
I’m pretty sure that whoever invented the curriculum for driving on the road probably wasn’t a racecar driver, so if you had the option of a regular driving curriculum or Danica Patrick’s curriculum, I’d assume you’d go with mine.

GOOD IDEA. DID YOU CREATE YOUR WINE COMPANY FOR PARENTS WITH KIDS JUST LEARNING HOW TO DRIVE? BECAUSE THAT CAN BE STRESSFUL...
Haha. Well, obviously I created my own wine because I like drinking wine. My vineyard property has quality soil, good exposure, it’s in a good area with the right rootstock and right farmers. As the proprietor, I had the vision and brought the right people on board to make magic happen.
Somnium Wine, my Napa Valley cab, is good quality every year. It’s natural, without using purple concentrate; farmed and organic, with very low sulfite.

I thought it would be fun to curate candles for different areas of the house; for example, there’s a fresh scent for the laundry room, and a dreamy scent for bedrooms.

you name it- there’s plenty of entertainment. I love that we’re not too far to the beach, you can get to the mountains, you can go to Sedona. Most importantly, it’s where my friends are. I’m a big fan of Zinc Bistro and True Foods. I love alone time, taking walks and listening to music.

It was a multi-year health journey that was extremely painful. I asked my mom if I should share my story, and she was like, ‘Well, you’re probably going to post about it anyway’ ...and she was right. I’m good at hitting send when I’m not ready.
To be honest, that is the definition of real vulnerability; when you share something you’re not sure you’re ready to share. And those are the times that I developed the most amount of traction and connection to fans, and such transparency resonates.

My interest right now is helping uncover the truth about life.

I am single dating right now. I need someone that can keep their confidence up with me because I’m a lot and I do a lot- especially for a potential partner. I’m a caregiver and go above and beyond for people I love, and who love me. I like to think into the future. I like to travel. I love to cook for people. I like to drink the best wine and eat the best food.
I’m a lot. Somebody’s got to be able to handle that.
I’d probably just end up saying it’s going to be a lot of fun, you know?

Every spring, PANDA’s 100% volunteer board of 200+ Valley women put together a true fundraising feat dubbed the “Children Helping Children’’ Fashion Show and Luncheon. To date, PANDA has raised more than $30 million for the Steele Children’s Research Center.
While the PANDA fashion show and luncheon has become synonymous with the colorful spring social season, the women who make up PANDA’s board are known for their passion, dedication and love for the Valley.

What’s it like party planning for 1,300 guests? Putting together an event like PANDA’s fashion show and luncheon is no small feat. However, after owning my company, Ashley Gain Weddings, I’m up for the challenge. Since retiring in 2021, I am excited to exercise my party-planning skills through PANDA.
Why PANDA? The idea of “children helping children” speaks to me as a mother of three young kids. My kids learn the importance of giving back by witnessing their mom pay it forward.
