Invest This Spring

Tax season is here and launching our first Investment issue made me pause to think about the investments I am making in my own life.

Whether we realize it or not, we’re making investments daily when it comes to our finances, how we spend our time, how we invest in our relationships with friends and family, our community, and ourselves.

As a lifelong learner, I’m constantly investing in self-improvement, whether it be learning a new way to stay healthy through exercise, exploring ways to boost savings when buying groceries, or strategizing what credit card to get based on points maximization. The good thing about tax time is that it forces us to evaluate how we are living our lives and ask tough questions like “How’s that working for me?” It’s an opportunity to make pivots as needed and get back on track. While I don’t always like the process, I feel invigorated afterward and learn something new.

This year, I made one of the biggest investments of my life thus far by buying this magazine. The investment is paying off in bringing you valuable content that highlights the amazing people, businesses, charities, and events that make up our incredible community.

In this particular issue, we’ve brought you a variety of ways that you can invest in your own life from investing in your children’s education and future with GV Christian School, to sitting down with Patrick Tyler from American Family Insurance to discuss the importance of having a plan of action for your family if something were to happen. And we look at how, as a community, we can come together and support our Ninth Island neighbors with conscientious tourism after the devastating fires in Maui.

Whatever it may be, take some time to invest in yourself this spring. As always, thank you for reading, and if there’s something you’d like to see in the magazine, please feel free to reach out to me at Crissie.Bown@citylifestyle.com. I love hearing from you!

Best,

Paige

Nurturing FUTURES

THE LIFELONG IMPACT OF INVESTING IN YOUR CHILD’S EDUCATION

EDUCATION CORNER | EDUCATION 16

AAs a parent, you are met with making about 35,000 decisions each day. When it comes to your child, you want only the best to set them up for life-long success. One of the earliest decisions parents must make with the longest-term impact is your child’s education.

The GV Christian Center was established in Henderson in 1982. In 1991, the GV Christian School opened as an educational center for preschoolers. In 1993, after years of research and seeing the success of their preschool program, GV Christian School expanded, serving kindergarten through 12th grade.

Today, GV Christian School remains true to its mission of being the best Christian school in the nation, providing a loving,

nurturing environment for children to achieve their emotional, spiritual, and academic best. One way this is accomplished is by creating a tight-knit community that creates lasting relationships long after the diplomas have been issued.

“Families have become life-long friends through our school. We offer school trips, events, and sports to connect families and staff. We can pray, encourage, and support our families through life’s ups and downs,” says Stephanie Smith, principal of junior and senior high.

Elementary principal, Jamie Bielich, echoes, “GV Christian School is more than a school; it is a family. We create a safe learning environment that focuses on the mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health of our students.” The school’s motto, “The pursuit of God, knowledge, compassion, and leadership”

is apparent in all aspects of campus life at GV Christian School.

From the moment you contact GV Christian School, you are greeted with personalized service that makes you feel welcome and confident in your choice. Each prospective student is set up for success in a variety of ways, starting with an entrance exam. “We are a preparatory school and believe this is the best way to determine whether or not we are a good fit for new students,” says Smith. “We meet with high school families each year to review their graduation plan, ensuring they are on track to be accepted into the college of their choosing.”

GV Christian School also offers seniors a life skills course teaching the best practices for job interviews, budgeting, changing a tire, and paying taxes, along with the college application process.

“These trips are a highlight for our students each school year.”

The educational experience at GV Christian School extends well beyond the classroom walls with the inclusion of various field trips and excursions. “We take approximately five field trips each year because hands-on learning is the best,” explained Bielich.

Students in sixth through 12th grades attend a five-day expedition trip. “These trips are a highlight for our students each school year,” says Smith. Middle school attends the Outdoor Education Program, while grades nine through 12 visit locales like Washington, D.C., and New York City.

GV Christian School contributes to several outreach programs, including their own “Do Something Days.” The elementary side adopts families from a nearby

Title 1 school for the holidays as just one of their many contributions.

Students are afforded the opportunity to grow socially through extracurricular activities, including sports starting in first grade. “This is unique in that they can start young and improve their skills each year and move up to middle school sports then play junior and varsity sports. Students could potentially play with the same kids for a decade, which has created depth in our sports programs and state title-winning teams,” said Bielich.

Investing in your child’s education goes well beyond simply the financial aspect. At GV Christian School, it is an investment that sets them up for a successful future … and that is priceless.

CONSCIOUS TRAVEL: MAUI

Investing in respectful vacationing to embrace communities and help them recover

As an admirer of Maui since childhood, its beauty, exploration, and wonder have always held a special place in my heart. Strolling through Lahaina's streets, savoring Mai Tais in Kaanapali, and getting engaged at the Seven Sacred Pools added to the enchantment.

However, the devastating August 2023 fires brought loss to loved ones, pets, homes, schools, and businesses, burning much of Lahaina to the ground. Despite well-intentioned advice urging tourists to stay away, avoiding tourism exacerbates challenges for businesses, the local economy, and the residents.

Closed for cleanup, Lahaina's contrast with the rest of the island relying on visitors

is striking. The fires ignited heartache for Maui, and Las Vegas - widely known as the Ninth Island due to its substantial Hawaiian population - serves as a crucial support network for those impacted. Many affected families even relocated to the valley. Desiring to contribute to the recovery, I decided to raise awareness and extend assistance. I encourage you to join in cultivating the aloha spirit by investing in compassion, as your mindful visit can play a crucial role in providing support.

Embarking on this conscious travel journey, my family and I set foot on Maui earlier this year and began our trip by volunteering in-service of the recovery.

For one of our volunteer activities, we engaged as a family with the Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement at the Kākoʻo Maui DC-Distribution Center, a resource hub for communities affected by the Maui wildfires ( hawaiiancouncil.org/helpmaui). Sorting clothing and donated goods, our interactions were deeply meaningful as many sought assistance for the first time. Approaching with dignity, we discussed supply needs and learned about losses and challenges. As personal shoppers, we selected essential items like food, pots, pans, baby formula, toiletries, and more. Heartfelt stories emerged, with some sharing the hardships of multi-generational living. Grandparents detailed caring for newborns and many grandchildren while their adult children sought employment. These narratives touched our hearts, fueling our commitment to the mission.

During the latter part of our journey, we lodged in Wailea, a resort community in South Maui. The goal for our stay was to actively immerse ourselves in the local hospitality industry.

Initially, we roomed at the Fairmont Kea Lani (fairmont-kea-lani.com), Hawaii’s only all-suite and villa oceanfront resort perched on Maui's south shore. With 22 acres of tropical beauty, the recently transformed property provides an authentic immersion into Hawaiian culture and impeccable personal service, embodying the essence of aloha.

Arriving at the hotel, we were greeted with fresh leis and the transformation unfolded with the expansive openair lobby adorned with vaulted ceilings, ceiling-to-floor waterfalls, lush gardens, and captivating ocean vistas.

Beyond the lobby, Hale Kukuna, the new open-air cultural center, hosts classes, workshops, and a curated collection of relics and artwork, fostering a deeper respect for Hawaiian traditions and the resort's commitment to sharing the island's history.

Adjacent is Pilina, the new bar and lounge, which harmoniously blends with the island's beauty. Featuring wave-inspired monkey-pod wood architecture, it's an ideal spot for culinary cocktails and locally sourced raw bites, offering breathtaking sunsets and whale sightings.

During my family’s stay, our mornings were serenaded by chirping birds as we savored Nespresso on our balcony, framed by cascading bougainvillea. After delightful alfresco breakfasts at The Kea Lani Restaurant, our afternoons unfolded poolside with waterslide riding, pool basketball games, and swim-up bar enjoyment. Evenings brought outdoor family movies or dinner at Kō restaurant.

Our final stop was at the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, a 15-acre beachfront property on Mōkapu Beach

Fairmont Kea Lani

The Fairmont Kea Lani recently completed a multi-year transformation, unveiling a redesigned lobby, bar/ restaurant, and cultural center. With 413 one-bedroom suites and 37 two-story villas, all artfully redesigned to reflect the island’s heritage, the property collaborated with Native Hawaiian elders with lineal ties to the resort’s location, to carefully craft the concept, design, and names.

Beyond its cultural enhancements and spacious suites, Fairmont Kea Lani offers a spa and wellness program, additional dining options, and three pools, including an adults-only tranquility pool.

Rooted in culture and community, the Fairmont Kea Lani, especially after the recent fires, feels deeply connected and fitting.

(andazmaui.com). This modern masterpiece features three cascading outdoor infinity pools, offering unobstructed ocean views and a tranquil setting. The resort's flawless planning and architecture capture reflections of water, palm trees, and ocean on its floor-toceiling windows, creating a harmonious and unforgettable vacation.

We experienced The Villas at Andaz Maui, an exquisite retreat ideal for multigenerational families or large groups, as well as the adults-only pool near the 'Āwili Spa and Salon. The resort also features an art gallery, fitness center, over 52,000 square feet of outdoor event space, farm-to-table dining at Ka’ana Kitchen, savory Japanese fusion cuisine at Morimoto Maui, poolside lunches at Bumbye Beach Bar, and craft cocktails at Lehua Lounge.

The Guest Experience Team helps create personalized itineraries that include fitness or art classes and cultural activities like coconut leaf weaving, outrigger canoeing, or ukulele and hula lessons.

During our last evening on the island, we attended the Feast at Mokapu Luau, where we

were welcomed by vibrant Hawaiian performers that led us on a spiritual journey, blending culture, history, music, dance, and artistry and was complemented by a three-course dinner and handcrafted cocktails.

Our conscious travel journey revealed that aloha goes beyond a greeting; it's a call to mindfulness and respect. As we explored the road to Hana and much of the island, we packed not just essentials but also compassion and kindness, understanding that aloha encompasses hospitality, charity, integrity, patience, and unconditional love for our fellow humans. In conscious travel, the aloha spirit guides us to approach each experience with a heart full of warmth and understanding.

In a poignant and beautiful irony, I can't help but recognize that while visitors have long visited Maui seeking healing for their mind, body, and soul, the island now seeks healing through conscious travelers. I encourage you to embark on your journey with a spirit of compassion, aiming to leave not only footprints but also a legacy of respect and care for the communities that contribute to making this island a cherished place.

Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort

This flagship property of the Andaz brand in a resort destination, features 320 guestrooms, including 35 suites and 30 contemporary villas with tropical views and direct beach access. Recently, celebrating its 10th anniversary, the property underwent a tasteful redesign and key enhancements to common areas, suites, and guest rooms.

The 19 ‘Ilikai Villas, a collection of 1900-square-foot, 3-bedroom residences, offer a gourmet Bosch kitchen, washer/dryer, private lanai with a Viking grill, and ocean or garden views. Ground-level villas feature a private plunge pool and expansive lawn, while the penthouse offers 3,750-square-feet of living space and a glass-bottom cantilevered pool.

Guests in any of the 30 villas enjoy direct access to the resort’s VIP concierge for a personalized experience.

Navigating Life’s Unpredictability

How Patrick Tyler is protecting dreams and legacies

Advocating for insurance is a lifelong investment. Patrick Tyler, the Agency Owner/Agent of the Patrick Tyler Agency at American Family Insurance in Henderson, is more than an experienced insurance professional; he's a dedicated community member with a passion for safeguarding dreams and legacies. With more than 30 years in the insurance industry and a commitment to community service, Patrick stands as a testament to the transformative power of insurance in the face of life's unpredictability.

His journey with American Family Insurance began 1 year and 5 months ago when he took on the role of Agency Owner. However, his dedication to promoting insurance goes back 3 decades.

Describing American Family Insurance as a customer-driven company, Patrick emphasizes their commitment to inspire, protect, and restore dreams. Rooted in values such as accountability, caring, courageousness, inclusivity, innovation, and trustworthiness, the company is dedicated to making a social impact through community collaboration and empowerment.

Patrick's fervor for life insurance is deeply personal. As the youngest of 10 children, he witnessed firsthand the financial challenges and emotional trauma that result from the absence of life insurance planning.

"One of my sisters passed away without life insurance. The financial strain on her five children was immense. This experience fueled my commitment to ensuring my entire family is covered and inspired me to help others think about their legacy and the financial protection they can provide,” said Patrick.

"Don't delay! Get the protection you need. Life is unpredictable, and the unexpected can happen to any family. When facing emotional trauma, don't add financial devastation. EMBRACING A PARTNERSHIP WITH YOUR BODY

Wellness isn’t about restricting — it’s really about giving. Giving to yourself and to your body in a way that allows them both to thrive. The cool part? The things that give to your body naturally give to your mind, your hormones, your earth, your relationships, and so on — it’s all beautifully interconnected in that way.

Eat your greens, cook at home, choose local produce and quality meats, don’t be scared of healthy fats — but also support local farmers, move in a way that makes your body and mind feel good, prioritize times of mindfulness and stillness.

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 6 oz. filets of wild caught salmon

• 1 Tbsp. avocado oil

• 1 Tbsp. coconut aminos

• Zest and juice from one lemon

• 1 Tbsp. stone ground mustard

• 1 4 oz. container coconut yogurt, unsweetened

• 2 Tbsp. fresh dill, minced

• 2 Tbsp. capers, drained and minced

• Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS:

1. Marinate the salmon in the lemon juice, coconut aminos, and stone ground mustard for up to two hours.

2. Drizzle salmon with avocado oil, sprinkle with salt and ground pepper, and broil on high for five to seven minutes, until cooked to desired temperature.

3. Mix coconut cream, lemon zest, dill, capers, and ground pepper together.

4. Top salmon with coconut cream, serve with roasted or sautéed veggies, brown or cauliflower rice, or fresh greens. Enjoy!
