“Buy low. Sell high. Read Eden Prairie Lifestyle.” – Warren Buffett

Hello Eden Prairie Lifestyle readers, One multiplujillion, nine obsquatumatillion, six hundred twenty-three dollars and sixty-two cents. That’s Scrooge McDuck’s net worth according to Uncle Scrooge: The Second-Richest Duck , which was published in 1956. I’m not sure how to adjust for inflation, but that’s still pretty good considering how Scrooge keeps a large part of his money locked up for swimming purposes.

But you aren’t a fictional duck. You are a real person who would become gravely injured upon diving into a heap of bullion. That’s why you’re better off investing your money.

What should you invest in? There’s the multiplujillion-dollar question. Edenprairielifestylecoin, the cryptocurrency I’ve been developing in my spare time, isn’t available yet. (I’m still working out a way to print it.) Fortunately, living in Eden Prairie means you have countless other great investment opportunities right at your fingertips.

In this issue we are proud to feature First Western Bank & Trust, whose consumer loans allow you to invest in everything from your home to your boating pleasure and much more. We have Demery Wealth Advisors, which will help you create a sound foundation for your retirement and enjoy a more rewarding lifestyle today. We have the Citywide Prom, an upcoming par-tay which will let you invest in Eden Prairie Schools’ admirable efforts for our town’s youth. We also have Eden Prairie Run Club – a perfect investment in your health, which I understand is quite valuable.

If you would like to make a great investment in your home, read on to discover Boulder Images’ beautiful outdoor living spaces. And if you want to make the greatest investment there is – your golfing pleasure – then you’ll want beeline over to Bloomington where Office Golf’s 18 state-of-the-art Trackman golf simulators, full bar, and other secrets to happiness await.

As always, I would like to thank all of Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s sponsors, without whose generous support we could not mail our magazine directly to our readers’ homes. I always welcome any feedback or interest you may have in appearing on our magazine’s pages!

Best regards,

April 2024

THE CITYWIDE PROM

On April 25th, 1924, Eden Prairie students stepped into the future. “The Stars and Stripes Forever” roared out of a Victrola as each child was handed an American flag and ushered into our town’s new state-of-the-art gymnasium. Electricity. Central heating. Running water. A roof without pillars for basketball players to collide with. Imagine their awe!

Celebrate the Centennial of Eden Prairie Schools

Make the greatest investment you can: the future of

Eden Prairie's children!

The Historic Gym gave just as much cause for celebration 100 years ago as it does today. That’s why Eden Prairie Schools welcomes you to the Citywide Prom on the evening of May 18th.

The fête will highlight Eden Prairie Schools’ complete century of service to students with several historical displays – everything from artwork to vintage photographs to letterman jackets. Wondercure, a local classic rock band, will provide precisely the jams guests need to properly Lindy hop, twist, hustle, moonwalk, and, heaven help us, Dougie. Justice Paul Anderson, Sever Peterson, and other community leaders will address the crowd before the prom’s beaming royalty are crowned.

Guests are encouraged to dress as they would have for their own high school proms. Perhaps you will prepare by modifying a pink gown until it satisfies Ringwoldian standards, sculpting a beehive as high as Aqua Net will allow, or polishing wheat pennies until they’re reflective enough to earn their places in your loafers. You’ll look remarkable in any event.

If you would like to truly mark the occasion, purchase VIE (Very Important Eagle) tickets. In addition to early access to the event, premium appetizers and desserts, and a commemorative gift, VIE tickets will give you access to a very important tent: the one where Eden Prairie Lions Club members serve beer and wine, including a special edition quaff by Fat Pants.

The Citywide Prom is for adults only (with apologies to Eden Prairie Lifestyle’s adolescent readership). If your ménage includes members who aren’t yet old enough to wax nostalgic, bring them to Family Fun Day, which will be free and open to the public on May 17th from 5 to 7pm. It will include a book fair, vehicle fair and resource fair, as well as hands-on activities, open playground, and access to the Historic Gym and all the decorations and presentations therein. Eden Prairie Schools will also hold a parade on April 27th (the details of which have not yet been ironed out at the time of writing).

“Every child in Eden Prairie attended the Historic Gym from 1924 until 1960,” said Kathie Case, president of the Eden Prairie Historical Society. “I have my own fond memories of it, and watched my boys graduate from kindergarten on the gym’s stage. I’m delighted to celebrate a place and an exceptional school system that have touched so many lives.”

“The Historic Gym has evolved to meet our community’s needs over the decades,” said Molly Malone, director of adult and community engagement programs for Eden Prairie Schools. “Basketball, basket socials, school plays, talent shows, proms, movie nights, athletic banquets, bake sales, Spanish immersion classes, immunizations … people even used to go there to do their ironing back before their homes had electricity. The Citywide Prom will honor that long-standing linchpin of our community, as well as all the people who have helped keep it standing for so many years.”

The Citywide Prom will be held on May 18th from 6:30 to 10pm, with one hour’s early access to VIE ticket holders. To learn more and purchase your tickets, please visit edenpr.org/100years

DEMERY WEALTH Advisors

MAKE YOUR RETIREMENT THE WORLD’S LONGEST COFFEE BREAK

MONEY MATTERS | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES
24

Qué será, será. It’s a healthy, stoic attitude to adopt toward life’s problems – but it doesn’t justify poor planning. The decisions you make right now can reduce both the number and the severity of challenges you’ll face down the road. That’s the power of money. While it isn’t the secret to happiness, it’s no small part of it, either.

You can tell Kiley Demery is a man of heart and mind. After speaking with the independent wealth advisor for only a few minutes, you will sense that he genuinely cares about your well-being. And after spending only a short time working with him, you will see that he knows precisely how you can secure your best financial future, regardless of qué será.

“I moved to Minneapolis 28 years ago and went to work for AAA Minneapolis’ insurance department,” said Kiley. “That was my first exposure to the financial services industry. That is, unless you count my upbringing by my mother, who also worked in insurance and securities.

“I was recruited as a financial representative by Northwestern Mutual in 2001. That’s when I discovered what I love most: establishing strong, rewarding and long-lasting relationships with my clients. It is a great privilege to get to truly know someone as a person. To learn their needs, wants and goals, even more so.”

Kiley continued climbing the career ladder. In 2004 he became a mortgage broker. In 2010, an advisor for Wells Fargo. He reached the top rung in 2017 upon founding Demery Wealth Advisors, which specializes in providing comprehensive wealth management services for individuals and designing qualified retirement plans for small business owners.

"With a little understanding, we can do great things!”

“One course of action can dramatically improve your lifestyle today, as well as create a sound foundation for your retirement decades from now,” said Kiley. “But to anyone else, that same course of action is likely to prove useless.

“Demery Wealth Advisors primarily owes its growth to favorable introductions. My clients are confident recommending my services to their friends and family because they know I will invest whatever time it takes to fully comprehend their objectives and how they hope to accomplish them. That level of commitment is paramount to developing a bespoke financial plan; one which accommodates everything that makes my client’s circumstances unique.

“Naturally, circumstances change. That’s why I stay in constant contact throughout the year. Sometimes I reach out to my client so we can go over a couple of routine agenda items, or simply to provide some new information that I believe would be of value. Sometimes they reach out to me to discuss major life events, such as their child’s acceptance to college, their latest major purchase, or their parent’s recent need for long-term care. Each conversation gives me the insight I need to fine-tune my client’s financial plan, ensuring that it continually serves their best interests.

“A robust private wealth plan goes far beyond asset management. It outlines investment strategies that strictly adhere to whichever risk parameters my client has deemed acceptable. It encompasses a variety of asset and income protection strategies, and takes tax efficiency heavily into account as well.  Finally, there is estate planning: will, trust, power-of-attorney and healthcare directives that ensure the best possible outcomes for my client and their family, regardless of whatever the future holds in store.

“Whether you have recently encountered a new challenge that could jeopardize your quality of life now and during your retirement – or you would simply like help navigating the uncertainty of day-to-day wealth management – then I welcome you to reach out today to schedule a consultation. With a little understanding, we can do great things!”

FIRST WESTERN BANK & TRUST

Where Borrowers Are Neighbors –Not Consumers

FINANCIAL BUZZ | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES
David Thompson, Market President Meghan Carlson, Universal Banking Supervisor Peter Haugen, Consumer Lending Officer 28

At this time of year, I think of the bears now groggily emerging from their dens. Having spent months enveloped in snow and night, they take deep, mighty sniffs of their thawing surroundings and become thrilled by nature’s golden-green promises. Raspberries. Hazelnuts. Unattended picnic baskets. A veritable cornucopia of opportunity awaits every bear who would casually lumber toward it.

Spring strikes similar feelings of anticipation into human hearts, too, though it takes more than fruits, nuts and ham sandwiches to stir us. This is when we get excited about remodeling our homes – or, barring that, moving into new homes that are already perfect just as they are. This is also when we get excited by the prospects of new vehicles: not just the utilitarian things that carry us from A to B, but boats and motorcycles and convertibles and RVs and other gas-powered instruments of pleasure.

The bears have it easy. The objects of their desire grow on trees. But we haven’t got it all that bad, either. The things we want are just within reach thanks to First Western Bank & Trust.

First Western occupies a rare niche in the banking world. Their $2.2 billion in assets and 19 locations across Minnesota and the Dakotas rightly classify them as a juggernaut. At the same time, First Western hasn’t abandoned the personal, methodical service they have built their name on since 1964. They are a big small bank, and they offer every loan you could need to seize the spring.

“We offer consumer loans, although we don’t believe the word ‘consumer’ accurately reflects the way we feel about our clients,” said David Thompson, market president for First Western’s Eden Prairie branch. “Really, they are our neighbors, and we’re honored to provide the

loans they need to enjoy more comfortable and rewarding lifestyles while simultaneously propelling our local economy forward.”

“First Western has always revolved around relationships,” said Peter Haugen, consumer lending officer. “Everything we do is in service of forging long-lasting partnerships with the people we’re so honored to assist. For instance, suppose you come to us because you would like to take out a HELOC to remodel your home. We’ll help you understand whether that type of cash-out refinance is suitable for your unique circumstances. We’ll complete your credit approval in as little as one business day. And because we have the authority to approve every loan we issue on-site, we’ll most likely fund yours within a couple of weeks.

“Whether you need it for work or want it for pleasure, we’ll make your upcoming vehicle purchase truly quick and painless. We recently welcomed a client whose car lease was due to expire in only three days. That’s all the time we needed to process his application, approve his loan, and deliver the cash to pay off his lease. Just like that – bam –zero interruption to his livelihood. It’s a testament to the power of local decision-making.”

“Our process also simplifies long-term financial planning,” added Meghan Carlson, universal banking supervisor. “We offer a number of CDs with term lengths ranging from six months to five years. The Federal Reserve is expected to begin cutting rates this summer, which makes now a highly opportune time to invest in CDs. And if you’re taking a more forward-thinking approach to preparing for your retirement, our traditional and Roth IRAs are both available to help you reach your goals sooner.”

“Now that mortgage rates are slowly trending downward, we expect this summer to become more attractive for homebuyers,” said David. “We are actively helping our clients by providing every type of home loan, including conventional, fixed-rate, adjustable-rate, VA, USDA, FHA, FHLB and more. We compete on the basis of this broad product offering, as well as superior customer service. For example, one of our clients recently ran into a last-minute hurdle because he hadn’t received a septic certificate prior to closing. Rather than let his deal go sour, one of our representatives drove to the county registrar where they confirmed that the certificate wasn’t actually required. We delivered the good news two hours before closing.

“Added steps like those may take extra effort, but they are inseparable from our mission: to serve as the true community bank of Eden Prairie, where our clients’ needs always – and only – come first.”

ATHLETE LIFE | FITNESS

Friendship. Exercise. Beer. The trinity of health and happiness. They’re normally enjoyed only one at a time – or in pairs, as in the cases of group fitness classes, fishing trips, and running from campus police. You get precious few opportunities to enjoy all three together. Eden Prairie Run Club is one of them.

MAKE FRIENDS. GET FIT. DRINK BEER.

Picture this. It’s a warm, bright blue summer day. You pull up to Fat Pants Brewing Co., get out and stretch your hammies, and then saunter over to your fellow running enthusiasts.

Once the party has assembled, you’re off together on a 5K around heavenly Purgatory Creek: a perfect place to clear your head, feel one with nature, and see funny squirrels.

After you’ve achieved your cardio goal for the day, guess where you wind up? Right back at Fat Pants, which isn’t just fortuitous because it’s where you left your car. It’s also where you can drink beer so delicious it defies logic or description. And if you don’t care for beer, you can have a refreshing hard slushy, hard seltzer, or Chicago beef sandwich instead.

Eden Prairie Run Club was founded in partnership between Fat Pants,

HealthSource Chiropractic and Burn Boot Camp. “Augusta Berling, Dr. Katie Kearney-Bidwell and I have been excited about doing this for a really long time,” said Tina Hegna, owner of Burn Boot Camp’s locations in Eden Prairie, Maple Grove and Blaine. “Eden Prairie Run Club is all about bringing people together, inspiring them to be more active, and then bringing them even closer through the magic of conversing over patio cocktails.

“If Burn Boot Camp has taught me anything, it’s the benefits of exercising as part of a group. You get lots of encouragement to keep going when you’re backed by a supportive community. You feel more accountable to work toward your fitness goals as well. And when people are around to appreciate whenever someone reaches a milestone, the motivation spreads like wildfire.

“I speak from my own personal experience. Group exercise has helped me achieve greater results than I ever could have hoped to on my own. Since starting at Burn Boot Camp, I’ve felt more pride, confidence and comfort in my own skin than ever before. Eden Prairie Run Club is just another way to share a real life changer!”

Chick of the Woods

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE | LIFE + CULTURE
DISCOVER THE MAGICAL FUNGUS AMONG US
38
Jaime Rockney FB @chickofthewoods | IG @chick.of.the.woods
“I’ve watched so many people’s eyes light up with pure, sincere delight when they find their first mushroom.

The treetops dapple the forest floor in a thousand shades of green. The smell of earth and the sound of last year’s leaves meet your senses with each bootstep. The chickadees chi-choo up above.

You suddenly snap to attention. You have spotted something of singular interest: a stump. It is a stump just like any of the other stumps you have ignored a thousand times before. But today you are different. Today you have been made a forager.

You break away from the group, gripping your wicker basket tight as you advance toward the rotting obelisk. And there, clinging to its rim, is what you have been searching for: salmon-colored, with thin ribbons of orange, and shaped like a stack of distorted pizzelles.

You have finally found it. The chicken of the woods.

“After 16 years of doing this, I can’t believe I’m still so obsessed with mushroom hunting,” said Jaime Rockney. “I think it’s because it combines my love of the outdoors, the thrill of the hunt and finding delicious food. It’s also the perfect distraction from all of the things I ‘should’ be doing. Plus, mushrooms are a very sustainable food source. Picking one doesn’t harm the fungus that grew it – they will come back year after year.

“I believe mushroom hunting is satisfying on a primordial level. We all share the same deepest instincts: to walk around looking for food, and feel happiness whenever we find it.”

Jaime used to only forage mushrooms with Ruby, her yellow Lab. For all her other positive qualities, Ruby is wholly oblivious to the concept of mushrooms. Indeed, Ruby is oblivious to concepts in general, and occasionally expresses her profound cluelessness by trampling perfectly good morels.

Eventually, Jaime decided to add human companions to her hunting party. “One of the only ways I could see my friends during ‘the season’ was to take them mushroom hunting with me. They always said they had a wonderful time learning from me, and mentioned I could make this a side business. I had just as nice a time sharing my passion with them, but never dreamt I could make a penny from my obsession. But then I thought to myself, why not? Why not quit my job and do what I truly love?”

Thus Jaime became the Chick of the Woods, and began offering guided mushroom hunts to anyone who would like to join.

“A typical outing begins when we all meet in a park. We kick off with a discussion about safety, basic mushroom facts, and identifying edible species. If it’s May, we’re looking for morels, oysters and pheasant backs. If it’s later in the year – right up until mid-October –we’ll keep our eyes peeled for several other kinds of fungi. Giant puffball, shrimp of the woods, hen of the woods, and chicken of the woods are all perfect goals for beginners. They’re easy to identify, and they don’t have dangerous lookalikes.

“Next we all venture into the woods, fanning out so we can cover more ground and discover more species. When someone finds a mushroom, they call out so everyone else can join and learn how to identify it. Pretty soon, our baskets are filling up.”

When the hunt is over, the group reconvenes at the park to debrief and share thrilling tales of their exploits while Jaime fires up her trusty camp stove. Steak of the woods may be paired with blue cheese and naan bread; chicken of the woods, sautéed to perfection in Buffalo sauce. Simple recipes, which don’t deprive guests of authentic mushroom flavors.

“I’ve watched so many people’s eyes light up with pure, sincere delight when they find their first mushroom. One of my guests had never walked in a forest before, and was amazed by the world she’d been missing. I recently had a wonderful lady join one of my hunts. She confided that she had been living with debilitating anxiety and depression for decades – and that she had just enjoyed one of the best days of her life. She wished

she discovered mushroom hunting sooner, because she had already decided to make it part of her medicine.”

Jaime is much more than a fun gal who loves fungi. She is a member of the Minnesota Mycological Society and the North American Mycological Association, and has been certified to identify and sell mushrooms by three separate standards. You are in the most capable hands when you visit chickofthewoods.com and book your foraging adventure.

BOULDERIMAGES: A STONE’STHROWAWAY

OUTDOOR LIVING | HOME + DESIGN
CRAFTING TIMELESS OUTDOOR HAVENS ROOTED IN EXPERIENCE AND COMMUNITY COMMITMENT
44
The communities are so good to us; it is good to give back.

In Minnesota, outdoor living is more than an appreciation; it's a way of life. Boulder Images stands out among the many contributors to this lifestyle, creating enduring memories through their unique boulder walls and an unwavering commitment to the community. Todd and Libby Montreuil, the heart and soul behind Boulder Images, have not just built a business; they've forged a love story intertwined with creativity, experience, and community spirit.

CRAFTING OUTDOOR MASTERPIECES

Boulder Images is not just a landscaping company; it's an architect of outdoor dreams. For 25 years, this family-owned business has been transforming landscapes into personal sanctuaries, specializing in boulder retaining walls that bring

nature's rugged beauty into residential and commercial spaces.

Established in 1999, Boulder Images has grown into a small team of dedicated individuals, with Todd at the helm since 1986, alongside key team members Jim and Nate, boasting a collective experience of over 75 years. Todd, with nearly 40 years of experience alone, is known as one of the first in the industry to build a structural boulder wall. From there, he perfected the naturalistic approach, including soft planting pockets and flowing hillsides with facades that look like Mother Nature created them herself. Simply put, no one else in the industry compares.

Truth be told, the journey began unexpectedly, with Todd setting stones for a landscaper at the young age of just 19. “Getting started in the business really was an accident,” Todd quipped. “But I’ve never looked back.”

What started with timber walls evolved into a signature style of naturalistic boulderscaping, a unique look that captured attention and stood the test of time. The demand soon surged, creating a company focusing on customer satisfaction through creativity, quality, and personalized service. Todd's meticulous selection of stone for every job ensures a touch of craftsmanship that sets Boulder Images apart.

THE LOVE STORY

Todd's passion for boulder walls transcended his professional life, becoming a personal love story when he and Libby tied the knot in 2016. Libby, a landscape designer with an educational background in agricultural marketing and a master's degree in landscaping design and horticulture, fell in love not only with Todd but also with the business.

From hiring Boulder Images for her projects to becoming an integral part of the team, Libby brings her expertise and a spark that has not dimmed over the years.

"I used to call him the drill sergeant, but then found out he was a teddy bear," Libby fondly shares, emphasizing the balance of professionalism and warmth that defines their dynamic.

CREATIVITY UNLEASHED

At Boulder Images, the process of creating outdoor havens starts with a personal touch. Libby personally meets with clients, understanding their desires and needs while assessing the space for a tailor-made design. This commitment to personalized service ensures that each project is a reflection of the client's personality, creating spaces where families can relax, unwind, and play –a true extension of their homes.

However, the canvas for creativity extends beyond boulder retaining walls, encompassing various outdoor features. From striking outcroppings that add a rugged charm to firepit cove seating, providing intimate gathering spaces, natural stone staircases that harmoniously blend with the landscape, to the meticulous restoration of shorelines, every project is a testament to innovation and versatility.

Using boulders in their designs creates a distinctive look, departing from more traditional approaches like timber.

The natural textures and earthy tones of boulders evoke a timeless quality, ensuring that each creation not only stands out but seamlessly integrates with the environment. This departure from the old school makes Boulder Images' designs visually appealing and contributes to the outdoor spaces' durability and longevity.

With Libby's background in agricultural marketing and landscaping design, Boulder Images goes beyond construction; they create living works of art. Libby's expertise ensures that each project fits seamlessly into its surroundings and is built to endure, standing as a testament to the enduring bond between craftsmanship and the great outdoors.

COMMUNITY AT THE CORE

Beyond crafting outdoor masterpieces, Todd and Libby are deeply rooted in community service. Sponsoring a 4H club and supporting the Eagan FunFest Ambassadors are just a glimpse into their commitment to community engagement. Libby's upbringing, focused on community service and giving back, resonates in their involvement with local sports teams, the Eagan Park board since 2001, and helping support the start of a 4H club in their neighborhood.

Their generosity extends beyond city limits. Whether it's donating stone to border a pavilion at the Nature Center in Prescott, WI, or contributing stone to Rosemount Elementary, Boulder Images believes in giving back. Libby sums it up perfectly, "The communities are so good to us; it is good to give back."

From sponsoring local events to undertaking these gratis projects, Boulder Images exemplifies the essence of community stewardship. Their involvement goes beyond business; it's about being part of something larger and making a positive impact.

In a world where businesses often prioritize profit over purpose, Boulder Images proves that success can be measured not just in boulders stacked but in the lives touched and the communities strengthened. As they celebrate 25 years this coming August, the legacy of Boulder Images is not just in the walls they build, but in the connections they forge and the memories they help create, one boulder at a time.

PIPESTONE, MN

Native Americans have treasured the pipestone quarries for thousands of years. The Dakota, the Mandan, and the Iowa tribes have all hand-quarried the spot in Southwest Minnesota named for its soft red stone, which they used to carve ornate pipes. These pipes were so highly prized in pre-Columbian America that archaeologists have unearthed them from Manitoba all the way to Georgia.

Today the world comes to Pipestone, as the beautiful little city draws over 75,000 visitors each year. Pipestone National Monument, its most popular attraction, is an oasis of natural prairie, where visitors can see a sacred gathering place just as it has been since time immemorial.

Established by an act of Congress in 1937, the Pipestone National Monument was created to protect the rights of all Native Americans to quarry pipestone. Unlike most national park sites, members of federally recognized tribes may apply for permits to remove one of the monument's natural resources. Only Native Americans may quarry the pipestone, which they do using traditional sledgehammers and wedges.

Here's the neat thing: Archaeologists a thousand years from now will find authentic pipestone pipes in Ireland, South Africa, Brazil, Japan and Australia, all of which would have been taken home as souvenirs by ancient tourists.

“Pipestone National Monument currently has 56 active quarries with dedicated quarriers who are preserving a living tradition, many of whom learned the skill from their ancestors," said Erica Volkir, executive director of the Pipestone Area Chamber of Commerce and CVB. “Today, pipestone carvings are appreciated as works of art by people of all cultures, as well as by Native Americans who use them in traditional ceremonies and for prayer.

"Many of our area's carvers, both men and women, also work as cultural demonstrators inside the visitor center at Pipestone National Monument through a cooperative agreement with the Pipestone Indian Shrine Association. This non-profit organization is dedicated to preserving the vanishing art of pipemaking. The visitor center also features an award-winning interpretive film, several exhibits about our area's natural and cultural history, a petroglyph display, and other authentic Native American artifacts.

"The monument is a wonderful summer destination! The three-quarter-mile Circle Trail provides great views of Winnewissa Falls and the tallgrass prairie, an environment which supports over 500 different species of plants and a variety of wildlife.

The trail starts at the visitor center and leads to the Old Stone Face, and then to the Sioux quartzite ridgeline overlooking the quarries. Visitors from the Twin Cities will recognize the name of Joseph Nicollet, whose expedition placed a marker by Leaping Rock just north of the trail's waterfall. It is amazing just how much history lives in this single square mile of land.

"Another popular attraction is the World’s Largest Ceremonial Pipe, which is less than half a mile south of the monument. It was installed by the Keepers of the Sacred Tradition of Pipemakers in 1999, and at 30 feet long it makes quite the selfie backdrop. The Keepers have their own shop just inside the Rock Island Railroad depot where you can schedule your own pipe carving class."

Pipestone is also home to Fort Pipestone, an authentic replica of a settlers' encampment from the 1860s, as well as the Pipestone County Museum downtown. All of Pipestone proper is a work of art, as 26 of its buildings are made of stone hewn from nearby quarries – not pipestone, which would crumble beneath Midwestern weather, but rather Sioux quartzite which has a lovely pinkish to purplish hue. While admiring the architecture in this

quaint downtown, you will find charming clothing boutiques, gift shops, and delicious dining options.

You may have to stay overnight if you want to enjoy all of Pipestone's restaurants. The Stonehouse & Quarry Lounge is arguably the spot for cocktails and patio dining in southwest Minnesota, and 8th Ave Diner and Coffee House is as true as small-town diners come. The locals love Los Tulipanes Mexican Restaurant and Dar's Pizza, a fourth-generation pizzeria.

Wait 30 minutes after eating before visiting the Pipestone Family Aquatic Center, where your kids will be rewarded for learning so much about history by plummeting down waterslides. If they're old enough to behave themselves alone in a waterpark, you can sneak off to play nine holes at the Pipestone Country Club or shop at the farmer's market (Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings). Bring the bikes! Casey Jones State Trail winds its way east from Pipestone to offer even more views of the area's immaculate prairie.

Like an inexperienced quarrier, you are only scratching the surface of Pipestone by reading this article. Please visit pipestoneminnesota.com to learn more about everything Pipestone has to offer and plan your visit this summer!

COME TOGETHER TO SWING A CLUB, HAVE A MEETING AND ENJOY TASTY FOOD

Looking for a place to play some golf, enjoy great food, and linger over cocktails? No, it’s not a country club, but a great alternative.

Office Golf, located in Bloomington, opened this past January and has all of these options and more. The founders, Ernie and Katie Rose, wanted an all-inclusive environment.

“This is a place where groups of people can come together, socialize, and spend hours enjoying a vast variety of amenities centered around food, beverages and golf,” says general manager, Chris Wilson. “But, even if you're not a golfer, you're still able to have the same level of enjoyment and hospitality experience across the board.”

Its technologically advanced indoor golf games are executed by 18 Trackman iO simulators, offering the look and feel of being on a real golf course. “It gives people the ability to do everything from playing over 200 national and international golf courses to really working on their skills and development,” he says.

One of its most popular courses is Interlachen, right here in Edina. “Being in Minnesota, where we only have anywhere from four to six months of good quality golf weather, this gives people the opportunity to keep their skills in check throughout the winter season.” It’s also a great choice during the hot summer months, and all year round.

For those who can no longer travel or walk a golf course, these simulated games provide the opportunity to still play

anywhere they desire. It’s also a great alternative for children and beginners who may just want to play for fun or work on becoming proficient enough for a real course. The venue has over 30 sets of brand-name clubs on hand for customers’ use.

Golf is a very social game, and many important business deals have taken place on golf courses. “When you look at the last five years, one of the things that we identified is that the way we do business is shifting,” says Chris. “What people are looking for is an engaging and immersive way to do business, and that’s happening less in a suit or boardroom and more over a drink or a meal."

“So, we really wanted to offer an engaging opportunity for people to not only be able to get their work done in a space that is designed to cater to their needs from a working perspective, but to also provide

“OFFICE GOLF COMBINES THE ELEGANCE OF A COUNTRY CLUB ENVIRONMENT WITH THE ACCESSIBILITY FOR A VERY DIVERSE DEMOGRAPHIC.”

the opportunity to entertain clients who want to come in to hit balls for half an hour and/or have lunch.” The club offers conference rooms and corporate spaces for all types of business meetings.

Office Golf is also a wonderful venue for team-building opportunities. Many employers are invested in keeping their employees happy and feeling valued. “An employer can say, ‘Hey, let's all get together, have some great food, a couple of drinks, and play some golf.’ It’s really nice from an employee perspective.

“A successful workspace is more than just four walls – a successful workspace is really an immersive experience where innovation

meets leisure. We’re trying to redefine what the work-life balance is and making sure that people's business endeavors aren't just productive, but also enjoyable.”

The club has hosted everything from 15-person events to a hundred-person events. “We want to create strong, long-lasting relationships with both our vendors and our customers,” he says. “So, we're making sure we have someone available as the point of contact to really go that extra mile to ensure that their needs are being met.”

Its restaurant, The Board Room, offers delicious foods on its Sips and Swings menu. Right now, the selections include

flavorful salads, handheld sandwiches and pizza, but down the road, there will also be what they call “approachable fine dining.”

“We have a really great culinary team right now, and within the next six to 18 months we’ll be expanding our culinary program. We have very good food at a reasonable price that is able to be shared and enjoyed by everyone.”

There are also three full-service bars, each with its own theme. “Our main bar offers really good classic cocktails whereas our speakeasy focuses a little bit more on craft cocktails, really making an immersive beverage experience,” says Chris.

“Being able to pair these three – simulated golf, wonderful food and interesting beverages - and execute them at a high level, is really important to us.” In addition to golf, there are billiards, darts, and ping pong to enjoy.

While the club does offer memberships, which include club storage, underground parking, invitations to the U.S. Open and Masters’ parties, and an hour of free simulator time each day, it’s also open to the public.

“One of the things that we really want to create is a vibrant and inclusive community,” he says. “Office Golf combines the elegance of a country club environment with the accessibility for a very diverse demographic. Being able to make it approachable, yet elevated in the sense that everyone who comes in feels like they’re stepping into their own private club, is the goal.”

RETIREMENT INCOME PLANNING: MAXIMIZING WEALTH AND LEGACY

YOU ONLY GET ONE RETIREMENT

Retirement marks the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and sound financial choices. A key element of effective retirement planning is diversifying your income sources. While staples like 401(k)s or IRAs are foundational, it’s equally important to branch out. Tax considerations significantly influence retirement strategies. Each financial action, from asset sales to account withdrawals, can carry tax consequences. Knowing these details can greatly influence one’s overall retirement income. Tactics such as Roth IRA conversions can help distribute tax liabilities over time, allowing for tax-free withdrawals later on. Using strategies like tax-loss harvesting can balance out capital gains, ensuring proactive steps to reduce tax impact.

SOURCES OF INCOME DURING RETIREMENT

Annuities have long been recognized as a popular retirement income source. An annuity is essentially a financial contract that can offer a steady and predictable income, with options that might even extend to lifetime payouts. Retirees should also be aware of certain drawbacks. These might include fees and expenses, issues around liquidity, and potential concerns related to inflation.

Delving into the world of Alternative Investments, retirees can consider assets such as hedge funds, private equity and real assets, among others. These investments may promise higher returns and provide diversification away from traditional stocks and bonds. However, the complexities of these investments mean they often come with challenges like illiquidity, higher fees and the need for a thorough understanding of the investment itself.

The backbone of many retirement plans, Social Security Income, provides a safety net for millions. Established with the intent of financial assistance, the amount one receives depends on various factors. There are also strategies retirees can employ to maximize these benefits, such as deciding on the optimal time to claim or considering the implications of working while receiving benefits.

Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs), while not familiar to everyone, can be a potential retirement income source. Historically rooted, DSTs offer a form of passive real estate investment, which can lead to regular distributions. They also open doors to 1031 exchange possibilities, offering tax deferral benefits. But, just like any other investment, DSTs have their limitations, notably the lack of liquidity and the heavy reliance on trust management.

You only get one retirement. In the ever-evolving world of finance, staying updated and flexible is essential to ensure the continued relevance and efficiency of one’s retirement strategy.
