An Invaluable Investment

In the hustle and bustle of our rapidly growing town, there's a different kind of investment that goes beyond dollars and cents–one that can make a bigger impact than something monetary. It’s the investment in our community and relationships.

Dripping Springs is more than a small town just west of Austin; it's a community that thrives on the spirit of connection. From our charming local businesses to our exemplary schools, quaint parks, and cultural events, every facet of our town contributes to the richness that makes it exceptional. Investing in Dripping Springs means recognizing the role each of us plays in preserving its unique character.

Several months ago, a friend and local business owner spontaneously gathered a few ladies for coffee. What began as a casual meet-up evolved organically into discussions about business challenges and successes, collaborative brainstorming, and unwavering support for each other. Encouraged by the positive experience, we decided to meet again, and as our circle expanded, so did the sense of solidarity and encouragement among us.

As a self-proclaimed introverted extrovert, I will chat it up in line at Mazama, make new friends at the park, and be the last to leave church because I’m a bit too talkative. On the other hand, I can walk into a crowded room at an event and want to cower in a corner in shyness. Often, I find that I must consciously motivate myself to step out—and in the end, I never regret taking that initiative. From the individuals I encounter, to the local businesses I have the opportunity to support, each interaction reaffirms the value of pushing myself beyond the door.

Studies show that strong social connections contribute to overall well-being. Investing emotionally in relationships has a direct impact on mental and emotional health. The support and camaraderie we build in our small town serve as a buffer against life's challenges, enriching our lives in ways that money can't measure.

As you immerse yourself in the thoughtful narratives this month, I encourage you to absorb their message, carry them with you, and allow them to enrich your life. Here’s to investing in a bright future for you, your family, and Dripping Springs.

DRIPPING SPRINGS EDUCATION FOUNDATION

A Priceless Investment in Our Educational Community

EDUCATION CORNER | EDUCATION
14

In the heart of Dripping Springs, a force is at work behind the scenes, weaving together communal support for students and teachers. The Dripping Springs Education Foundation (DSEF) stands as a beacon, not only funding crucial initiatives but shaping a brighter future for students and educators of Dripping Springs Independent School District (DSISD).

DSEF's vision is clear: “to engage the community in providing more students with better opportunities.” The foundation's Board of Directors is committed to a bold vision that not only deepens community engagement but also expands DSEF's reach and ability to meet the financial needs of DSISD. This vision includes funding mental health and wellness positions and creating new channels for investing in students and staff.

Investing in a bright future for our students means taking initiative to support our educators as well.  Through the Mental Health Initiative, launched in 2019, DSEF

funds salaries for three Licensed Mental Health Professionals serving across all DSISD campuses. These experts deliver essential social-emotional learning expertise, counseling services, and interventions to support the welfare of both students and teachers.

“This program significantly contributes to the overall well-being of our educational community, fostering a healthier school environment and, in turn, a stronger community,” says DSEF Executive Director Lindsey Herring.

CONTINUED > 15 APRIL 2024 | CITYLIFESTYLE.COM/DRIPPINGSPRINGS

Herring, a longtime resident and mother of two boys within the Dripping Springs school system, is a driving force behind DSEF. Bringing her skills in sales, marketing, grant writing, and education to the table, her unwavering passion is evident in her dedicated leadership of the DSEF programs.

Unlike other organizations, DSEF is uniquely positioned to fundraise for things not covered by the state and ensures that

every dollar stays within our local schools. These 100-percent-tax-deductible donations play a pivotal role in supporting life-changing and life-saving programs for students and staff.

DSEF programs encourage creative thinking and invite students to be an integral part of the process that brings innovation into the classroom. Students are encouraged to participate in learning the grant writing process, discovering projects, and creating new opportunities to see their dreams come to life. Recently an interactive planetarium and chicken coop project were granted, giving students unforgettable hands-on opportunities.

The commitment and investment made to providing better opportunities for DSISD students and staff remains unwavering. The foundation invites you to join this transformative journey, where every contribution makes a lasting impact on the lives of students and educators alike.

AND PHOTOGRAPHY

I paid a friend $100 to photograph one of the best days of my life. He was an amateur looking to photograph his first wedding, and I was a 21-year-old looking to save money. The day was beautiful, but if I could change anything about it, I would have been much more selective with our guest list and spent significantly more on photography. Of course, that’s coming from someone who became a wedding photographer himself.

I’m not sure where all of those images are today. A handful are collecting virtual dust within old pixelated Facebook albums, and the rest are on a scratched-up CD somewhere in my attic. My wife and I have built a beautiful life over the last 13 years, a life which has led us and our daughters to the beautiful town of Dripping Springs. However, I can’t help but hang my head when I think back to our wedding day. I spend nearly every weekend throwing myself into the wedding days of my couples, doing my absolute best to give them something I feel is missing from my own story.

A quality photographer is an artist. We provide direction, are courteous and thoughtful, bring a little bit of personality, and are unobtrusive so your day can unfold exactly as it’s meant to. There’s very little posing and no moment is asked to be repeated

or faked for an image. Above all, we take the time to learn what you want out of the day so it can be documented in a way that will be the most impactful. When you invest in quality, you’re paying for a personalized experience meant only for you.

“Photography is an invaluable investment. These memories belong on your walls, not in your attic.”

A photographer spends months preparing for a wedding day. I’m known to study the light as it falls through a venue to understand how it could look on your day. When the day comes, we run around for anywhere from six to 12 hours, continuously forming new creative ideas that we’ve never experimented with before. It’s fun to try new things, and there’s nothing more enjoyable than delivering truly unique images. And when the wedding day is over, the work is only halfway done. Over the next six weeks, we sift through thousands of images to decide which to edit in order to curate the perfect gallery. There’s always a cheaper option. You might even be able to find someone to do it for free. Just remember the old adage is true–you get what you pay for. Photography is an invaluable investment. These memories belong on your walls, not in your attic.

STOIC JIU JITSU

As a survivor of domestic abuse, Lacie Douthitt turned to jiu jitsu, a self-defense martial art, as an avenue to find empowerment, strength, and healing. While competing in the sport, Lacie met her husband Marcus, and the mom of two began to relearn trust through jiu jitsu.

The Douthitts launched Stoic Jiu Jitsu in Dripping Springs in 2022 with a vision to invest in strengthening men, women, and children to be strong in body and mind.

Stoic Jiu Jitsu takes a family-focused approach. Lacie says, “Relationships are why we’re here, and jiu jitsu facilitates relationship. The thing I love most about our jiu jitsu community in Dripping is it’s not just men who train. Seventy percent of our students are parents whose children train as well … leading by example.”

Jiu jitsu is excellent for alleviating anxiety, supporting cardiovascular health, building mental fortitude, and learning self-defense, situational awareness, and conflict resolution.

“We teach the mental fortitude of self-protection–never give up, even in your darkest hour. It’s the strength in yourself to know you always have a chance.”

Lacie adds, “Don’t think about this as just protecting yourself; this is you relearning body awareness. When you roll in jiu jitsu, you’re learning about your body through movement and pressure. If you can take the first step to invest in yourself and decide you’re worth it, our instructors can slowly, steadily build on each skill with you to grow your trust in your body and mindset.”

How can we master the dichotomy of being strong and gentle? Stoic Jiu Jitsu exists to develop this mindset.

investing IN YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY

A VITAL RESOURCE FOR COMMUNITY GROWTH

OUR TOWN | EDUCATION
30

For Dripping Springs residents, the local library is an indispensable cornerstone of lifelong learning. The Dripping Springs Community Library (DSCL) serves as the primary source of knowledge and community connection for more than 52,000 residents in the area.

As the Dripping Springs community continues to evolve, so too must its library. The exponential increase in usage underscores the urgent need for expanded facilities and resources to accommodate a growing population.

The library’s “Beyond Books, Building Community” capital campaign is a call to

action for the entire community to come together in support of a shared vision to build a new library that will serve as a gathering space for education, innovation, and community engagement for generations to come. Unlike municipal libraries funded by the city or county, DSCL relies on the generosity and support of its residents to make this vision a reality by raising $5 million to break ground on the new library in late 2024.

“Investing in the local library isn’t just about bricks and mortar; it’s an investment in the future of our community,” says Capital Campaign Manager Sarah Rose. “It’s an acknowledgment of the critical role that education, access to information, and cultural enrichment

play in shaping vibrant, resilient communities. By supporting the Beyond Books campaign, we’re not just building a new library; we’re investing in the intellectual, social, and economic capital of Dripping Springs.”

On April 3, participate in National Library Giving Day and support DSCL by shopping or dining at specific Dripping Springs businesses and restaurants that are generously donating a portion of their proceeds that day to the library. Or join the library’s next chapter today by making a donation at dscl.org/donate

To learn more about the campaign, visit dscl.org/future and follow on social media @DSBeyondBooks.

Prioritizing Mental Health

Why is it that we invest in so many things besides our mental health? According to the National Institutes of Health, as of 2021, over 22 percent of people in the U.S. had a mental health issue, but fewer than half of those had received help recently. We invest money, time, and energy into our careers, kids, entertainment, hobbies, and homes, but we often lose sight of other things that matter—our marriage, a healthier family, or our own well-being. It’s like making sure to get our tires rotated and brakes changed while neglecting to maintain the engine.

INVESTING IN YOUR MENTAL WELL-BEING

MENTAL WELLBEING | WELLNESS
34
AS OF 2021, OVER 22 PERCENT OF PEOPLE IN THE U.S. HAD A MENTAL HEALTH ISSUE, BUT FEWER THAN HALF OF THOSE HAD RECEIVED HELP RECENTLY.

It can be hard to balance work, personal life, and family, and unfortunately I often hear stories from clients about how they put themselves or their marriage on the back burner, never realizing the serious negative effects that would eventually come from doing so. They share about feeling stressed and overwhelmed, which then leads to depression or anxiety. Couples describe repeating the same fights, feeling disconnected, being focused on their kids, and being unable to remember the last time they had a date night.

Putting effort into our kids, our career, or other positive areas isn’t a bad thing, but we can fall into the trap of saying yes to those things and no to ourselves or our spouse. Many people have a hard time prioritizing themselves or their marriage until a bomb goes off that makes it impossible to ignore the issues. It’s important not to wait until things get that bad; just as if you waited until you had late-stage cancer to see a doctor, the odds of you walking away unscathed are much less in your favor.

Knowing where to start can be overwhelming, especially when things aren’t going well. To make it easier, there is a local resource available called the Dripping Springs Counseling Network. You can view profiles of local mental health professionals in Dripping Springs and the surrounding areas, see who’s accepting new clients, and filter by specialty, insurance, ages seen, or type of counseling. Whatever getting help looks like for you, I encourage you to make it a priority and take the next step today. It’s an investment worth making! DSCounselingNetwork.com

Iam thrilled to introduce myself to the Dripping Springs City Lifestyle readers. My husband and I relocated to Dripping Springs from Lakeway in 2022. Interestingly, we purchased one of my own listings in the Fitzhugh corridor, where we’ve since renovated the home and now make it our permanent residence. Dripping Springs resonates perfectly with both of us. We have three daughters in college and our youngest, and only son, is a junior at Dripping Springs High School.

Throughout my real estate career, which began in 2006, I’ve navigated between the Lake Travis area and Dripping Springs. I’ve always taken pleasure in marketing and selling a diverse range of properties, from homes to land and everything in between.

Upon settling in Dripping Springs, I made a concerted effort to establish my business close to home. I adore the area, its varied properties, and the stunning landscape. This year brings immense promise for the Dripping Springs real estate market, and I am thrilled to be a part of it.

LOCAL ATTORNEYS VS. ONLINE LEGAL SERVICES

Choosing Wisely

LEGAL COMPASS | FINANCE + LEGAL SERVICES
42
“There’s a reason attorneys attend law school for three years, are required to pass the bar, have legal malpractice insurance, and are accountable to their clients.

It’s very tempting to use online legal services such as Legal Zoom or Rocket Lawyer. The promise of quick, easy and, most importantly, affordable legal services at your fingertips … who doesn’t want that? What’s the difference between hiring a local attorney and using an online legal services website?

First, read the fine print and disclaimers. Legal Zoom states that “we are not a law firm and do not provide legal advice.” Likewise, Rocket Lawyer states that they are “not a … law firm, do not provide legal or tax advice or representation … and are not intended as a substitute for an attorney, accountant, accounting firm, or law firm.” How confusing! Aren’t you using their services in place of hiring an attorney? Online legal services such as these are a good place to start to get some general background information related to your legal issue. If you know exactly what you need and simply need a template, they may be a good resource for you.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO HIRING A LOCAL ATTORNEY INSTEAD?

You are hiring an attorney for the knowledge and expertise they provide, not just the documents they produce.

Online legal services are essentially a DIY endeavor. Your completed form is only a reflection of the information you enter. You may think you’re handling a situation in the best way possible and complete a form in line with that determination, but are you sure you’re making the right decision to accomplish

your goals? Hiring an attorney allows you to have personalized interaction and communication regarding your specific concerns. Your attorney will discuss the best path forward after analyzing your situation. For example, maybe a transfer-on-death deed is the best way to transfer real property to a loved one instead of through a will. An attorney can advise you on the pros and cons of such an alternative.

You are building a relationship with your attorney.

Say you’ve formed an LLC. Now you have questions related to negotiating your lease, drafting contracts with vendors, and utilizing the S-corporation tax designation. Your attorney will evaluate the big picture and will be available for follow-up conversations to form a strategy. Hiring an attorney allows you to turn to someone you trust for your most important decisions.

You are hiring someone to do it right the first time.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had a new client contact me specifically because they tried the online DIY route first and realized later that they weren’t sure what they’d done or what to do next, only to discover that they did it incorrectly. Now we needed to undo what they did, and they hire me to do it right. This all adds up to more expense. There’s a reason attorneys attend law school for three years, are required to pass the bar, have legal malpractice insurance, and are accountable to their clients.

THE POWER OF INVESTING IN WARDROBE CAPSULES
50

Everyone wants to know what to wear and what works for their body type and lifestyle. In our social media-driven world, fashion influence and real life are not always aligned. From the ever-changing trends to what's “in” based on your generation, it is not surprising that the question of what to wear makes your head spin. When in doubt, my favorite solution is to invest in a wardrobe capsule that aligns with your current lifestyle.

A wardrobe capsule is a mixture of key essential pieces that can be worn interchangeably. It's the foundation and default when you have no idea what to wear, and it answers what to wear based on your lifestyle, body type, budget, and current trends. Whether you are a busy working parent, an entrepreneur, a C-Level executive, or travel for work and leisure, a wardrobe capsule benefits all lifestyles.

Your wardrobe foundation is the most important base of your closet, and a wardrobe capsule will help you make easy decisions when it comes to shopping, getting dressed, and feeling confident.

Investing in a wardrobe capsule brings practicality and simplicity to your daily dressing routine. Here are five key advantages:

1. Cost Effective: By focusing on quality over quantity and selecting versatile pieces, you will spend less on clothing in the long run. Investing in well-made items that withstand trends can be more economical than frequently purchasing cheap, disposable fashion.

2. Simplicity and Efficiency: Wardrobe capsules include a small, curated collection of versatile, timeless pieces that can be mixed and matched effortlessly. It simplifies your decision-making process.

3. Time Savings: A wardrobe capsule reduces stress as it saves you time and energy when deciding what to wear daily.

4. Versatility: Having the right pieces in your wardrobe capsule offers versatility when getting ready since everything can be mixed and matched with ease.

5. Reduces Clutter: Wardrobe Capsules will eliminate unnecessary shopping and clothing. You will be clear and focused on what you truly need in your closet rather than what you purchase on impulse.

Crafting the perfect spring wardrobe capsule foundation involves assembling a total of 20 sensibly chosen items: six tops, five bottoms, two dresses, four outerwear pieces, and three pairs of shoes, culminating in an impressive array of approximately 120 outfit combinations.

Elevate your style effortlessly by curating your own wardrobe capsule tailored to your lifestyle, fashion preferences, and budget. Embrace the confidence, ease, and sophistication that comes with this curated collection. If you find the process daunting, consider seeking guidance from a professional stylist who can expertly assist in selecting the perfect pieces for your unique capsule.

1/ A Boston shaker is a two-piece cocktail shaker consisting of a glass and a metal tin. You’ll often see this type used in bars due to its ease of use. A cobbler shaker is an all-in-one solution consisting of three parts: a metal tin, cap, and built-in strainer. Both types of shaker are beneficial as they aerate, incorporate, and properly chill your drink. 2/ A muddler is a bartender's tool used like a pestle to mash—or muddle—fruits, herbs, and spices in the bottom of a glass to release their flavor. 3/ A jigger is a common bar essential that acts as a cocktail measuring cup. Jiggers are dual-sided and help bartenders avoid over-pouring and remain consistent when crafting cocktails. 4/ Hawthorne strainers and conical mesh strainers are used to prevent pieces of ice (or bits of citrus or other fruit) from getting into your drink, which makes for a smoother drink.

investing in COMMUNITY

BUILDING DREAMS, PRESERVING ROOTS

Born and raised in Austin, Texas, this area holds a special place in my heart. It is home in more ways than one—yes, family and friends are nearby, but the community and the lessons that I have learned here are what shaped me. From an early age, my parents and community instilled in me discipline, a strong work ethic, compassion, and tenacity. But most importantly, they showed me never to lose sight of honoring and investing in where you come from.

Balancing a full-time tech job and a construction business has been the most challenging yet rewarding experience of my life. I have been blessed with incredible business partners, and together we built Darbar Homes from the ground up. We started in 2018 building single-family homes throughout the Hill Country; a few years later, we are now building a 300-plus-home subdivision, The Homesteads at Deer Creek, in the heart of Johnson City.

Darbar Homes delivers a product with a modern farmhouse look while keeping in mind the reasons that our buyers love the Hill Country: privacy, a communal feel, and the charms of a small town. By partnering with local businesses and residents, we are investing in both current and future neighbors as exponential growth creates a tremendous need for housing in the area.

For both myself and Darbar Homes, it is not enough simply to build a community; we aim to provide a place where families can build lives for generations. I am deeply proud of our community and will remain steadfastly involved in this place I call home.

YOUR BEST SELF

Investing in the Path to Transformative Change

In a world filled with aspirations for personal growth, the journey of change often seems daunting. Many of us may desire transformation, but change is hard, and few take the necessary steps to bring it to fruition. The secret to real change lies in making strategic investments in yourself.

SELF CARE | WELLNESS
68
Leif Babin presenting at Lyngso Fitness Academy Level Up Retreat held at Camp Lucy

The process of transformation begins with clarity—knowing what you want and who you want to become. It involves asking the hard questions, like whether you're living as your most beautiful self and if you're proud of the person you present to the world each day. If the answer is no, change is not only possible but within reach.

Once you know what you want, real change requires creating a vision for that goal and taking actions that are in alignment with your objectives. Many people are unwilling to invest in this hard work, but every time you do, you’re actually investing in yourself.

Consider the big three: time, energy, and money. These are the currencies that fuel the engine of change. Investing these resources is key to transforming any area of your life. Imagine it as paying dividends to your future self—a commitment and dedication that will yield returns over time.

Take, for instance, the commitment to healthy living. While you may be tempted to snack on junk foods or skip exercise, you know that each nutrient-dense meal and each workout improves your quality of life—today and in the future. So each choice in favor of sustenance food and movement becomes a long-term investment in your health. In time, you won’t have to think about these choices; they will simply be a part of the healthy and fit person that you are.

This journey toward change may mean working toward a short-term target, like getting in shape for an upcoming event, or the long-term objective of staying vibrant and resilient as you age. Every investment toward these goals will be paid back. Your future self will appreciate your gift of getting time back to spend on yourself and with those you love.

Your transformative journey awaits. Instant gratification is overrated; invest in yourself as you strive to become the most authentic and beautiful you. Success will be so much richer because you did.

INVESTING IN TIMELESS LEGACIES

When we think of the word “invest,” financial terms often come to mind, or even ways to invest in ourselves in the present. But have you explored investments that will leave a legacy for future generations?

Husband-wife duo Mike and Kim Clinard are the founders and low-density developers of the Ranches at Dripping Springs project, one of many of their “Ranches at” communities. They offer a more timeless investment through their 389-acre ranchette community of 23 tracts. Each tract offers 12 to 20 acres and shares breathtaking views, canyons, grottos, ponds, and streams throughout the development.

INVEST IN NATURE

The logo of “Ranches at” features a lone oak tree, standing atop the highest peak at their first Texas Hill Country development, Ranches at Sentinel Peak. The majestic sentinel tree stands guard over the Texas Hill Country. This tree represents the Clinards’ mission to be “defenders of the land” by developing low-density ranch communities that promote conservation.

“With these views, the financial reward could be staggering by making this community high-density. But we have intentionally chosen not to because that doesn't

represent our values,” Mike shares. “We prefer low density in a ranch-like setting with a focus on preserving the land and wildlife. It's not about maximizing the dollar; it's about maximizing the beauty of the Hill Country.”

In addition to its beauty, an incredible benefit to each tract is the wildlife tax exemption status. “With our focus to protect the land comes protecting wildlife. Most of the acreage will be nearly property tax-free as we partner with wildlife management companies to protect Hill Country wildlife, with a primary focus on bird habitat,” Mike says.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE | REAL ESTATE

“WE ARE HONORING THE LAND, TREES, NATURE, AND GOD'S CREATION. THAT IS OUR PASSION.”

Kim adds, “The birds that live and migrate through here are important. So is all flora and fauna. We are honoring the land, trees, nature, and God's creation. That is our passion.”

To further regenerate the land, the Clinards also support each landowner in rainwater collection  by providing them a $25,000 credit at closing to go toward infrastructure for this effort. “If everyone is collecting rainwater, then we are all doing our part to help replenish the aquifer,” Mike says.

INVEST IN GATHERING

In a day and age when families are as busy as ever, how can we create spaces to unplug and spend time in nature and with our family? The Clinards believe their ranchettes will allow families to enjoy nature together on their properties for generations.

Each tract features natural characteristics like terraces, dripping springs, 40-mile views, open spaces, and dense cedar. “Not everyone desires to have a large, costly ranch,” says Mike.

“Our offering of smaller ranchette tracts allows people to experience a ranch-like environment at an affordable price. Every lot has views and many have creeks, grottos, and ponds.”

The relationship with nature is personal for the Clinards. Kim shares, “After experiencing a tragic loss several years ago, the outdoors became a haven for me, a place to connect with the Lord and find solace and healing.” Kim and Mike hope others can experience the same through Ranches at Dripping Springs.

Not only is it wise to invest in land with epic views on the fringe of urban growth, but it’s also important to invest in preserving the Hill Country from high-density development, protecting flora and fauna, and replenishing our aquifers.

When they explore the breathtaking property with visitors, at each subsequent tract the Clinards tell them, “It gets better.” By investing in nature and gathering together, with each generation it truly can get better. RanchesatDrippingSprings.com| @ranchesat

PREPARING FOR THE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE

The City is preparing for total midday darkness on April 8, as Dripping Springs is in the direct path of totality for the solar eclipse. The City of Dripping Springs created a task force that has been preparing for this event—and the expected traffic and influx of visitors to the Hill Country—for two years.

“Dripping Springs will be in totality for approximately three minutes, and Fredericksburg for four minutes. We are expecting three to four times the number of people who are usually in the city,” says Lisa Sullivan, People and Communications Director for the City of Dripping Springs and co-chairperson of the community task force. “When the eclipse is over, we expect a huge increase in traffic.”

The City is hosting a sunBLOCK party on Mercer Street for a fun, safe gathering place to watch the eclipse. Mercer Street will be closed from the morning of Sunday, April 7 through the evening of Monday, April 8. The sunBLOCK party will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 8 and will feature food vendors, an entertainment stage with music, and shopping.

HOW TO | LIFE + CULTURE

Photograph by: Daniel Mulkey

Sullivan recommends to residents, “If you have to be at work on Monday morning in Dripping Springs, try to work from home to avoid traffic. If you have to be there in person, try to travel to downtown Dripping the night before. Traffic will be heavy entering and leaving the city, especially after the eclipse.”

Thanks to a generous sponsorship by the Dripping Springs Community Library (DSCL), each student in the Dripping Springs Independent School District will receive a pair of eclipse safety glasses.

“From the very beginning of the planning for the eclipse, providing glasses to students was always one of our goals,” Sullivan comments. “Educating the public on the safest way to view the eclipse has been a top priority, and this helps provide a vehicle to do that for the students and their families.”

“By investing in educational initiatives like this, DSCL hopes to inspire the next generation of scientists and astronomers while contributing to the overall well-being of our wonderful local school community,” says DSCL Director Mindy Laird. “We are thrilled to partner with the City to help make the solar eclipse a safe and educational experience.”

Along with providing complimentary glasses to the schools, DSCL will also have a limited supply of eclipse glasses available for patrons. Leading up to the eclipse, the library will also provide eclipse programming for all ages, including eclipse story time with KXAN meteorologist Kristen Currie.

In addition, the City is offering eclipse glasses for sale to residents, businesses, and visitors. The glasses and other eclipse memorabilia can be purchased at City Hall or online. Money raised by the City from merchandise sales will pay for the infrastructure that is being put in place for the event, including restrooms, the stage, glasses, and more. “We want to make sure we’re taking care of our city, our residents, our businesses, and our visitors,” says Sullivan. “We are passionate about making this a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.”

RETIREMENT INCOME PLANNING: MAXIMIZING WEALTH AND LEGACY

Retirement marks the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and sound financial choices. It's often envisioned as a period of relaxation, exploration and deep connection with family and friends. However, this dream doesn't just manifest. It necessitates forward-thinking and detailed planning, regardless of one's financial status. Amid global economic changes, evolving life expectancies and intricate tax systems, an all-encompassing and strategic retirement plan is more crucial than ever.

A key element of effective retirement planning is diversifying your income sources. While staples like 401(k)s or IRAs are foundational, it's equally important to branch out. Dividend-bearing stocks can provide regular dividends, bonds offer both periodic interest and principal return and real estate, whether directly or indirectly owned, has potential for both rental income and value

growth. Private investments can also yield passive income and impressive returns.

Tax considerations significantly influence retirement strategies. Each financial action, from asset sales to account withdrawals, can carry tax consequences. Knowing these details can greatly influence one's overall retirement income. Tactics such as Roth IRA conversions can help distribute tax liabilities over time, allowing for tax-free withdrawals later on. Using strategies like tax-loss harvesting can balance out capital gains, ensuring proactive steps to reduce tax impact.

SOURCES OF INCOME DURING RETIREMENT

Annuities have long been recognized as a popular retirement income source. An annuity is essentially a financial contract that can offer a steady and predictable income, with options that might even extend to lifetime payouts. Available in varieties like fixed, variable and indexed, they often come with tax advantages. However, retirees should also be aware of certain drawbacks. These might include fees and expenses, issues around liquidity, and potential concerns related to inflation.

Delving into the world of Alternative Investments, retirees can consider assets such as hedge funds, private equity and real assets, among others. These investments may promise higher returns and provide diversification away from traditional stocks and bonds. However, the complexities of these investments mean they often come with challenges like illiquidity, higher fees and the need for a thorough understanding of the investment itself.

Delaware Statutory Trusts (DSTs), while not familiar to everyone, can be a potential retirement income source. Historically rooted, DSTs offer a form of passive real estate investment, which can lead to regular distributions. They also open doors to 1031 exchange possibilities, offering tax deferral benefits. But, just like any other investment, DSTs have their limitations, notably the lack of liquidity and the heavy reliance on trust management.

Introduced by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, Qualified Opportunity Zones (QOZs) were designed to spur economic development. Investing in these zones can lead to deferral, reduction and even the potential elimination of certain capital gains taxes. However, they often require a long-term investment horizon, and retirees must be well-versed with the specifics of the chosen opportunity zone.

Rental Income remains a favorite for many looking for consistent returns. Whether through direct property ownership or Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), real estate can offer passive income, tax benefits and appreciation. Yet, the responsibilities tied to property management, the uncertainties of market fluctuations and other associated costs must not be ignored.

The backbone of many retirement plans, Social Security Income, provides a safety net for millions. Established with the intent of financial assistance, the amount one receives depends on various factors. There are also strategies retirees can employ to maximize these benefits, such as deciding on the optimal time to claim or considering the implications of working while receiving benefits.

ESTATE PLANNING AND PHILANTHROPY

Beyond the immediate realm of retirement, estate planning emerges. This encompasses not just post-retirement arrangements but also asset distribution for future generations or charitable endeavors. Regularly reviewing wills, trusts and beneficiary designations ensures alignment with changing circumstances.

Philanthropy seamlessly integrates with retirement plans. Beyond fulfilling a personal mission to give back, it also carries financial benefits. Using instruments like donor-advised funds or charitable trusts lets individuals make impactful societal contributions while enjoying tax advantages.

You only get one retirement. In the ever-evolving world of finance, staying updated and flexible is essential to ensure the continued relevance and efficiency of one's retirement strategy.
