ince the founding of the North Lake Travis Chamber of Commerce that mission has always been our guidepost; a goal to which we have proudly been faithful. That little bump in the road called the pandemic has brought us back with renewed enthusiasm for all that the beautiful North Shore has to offer. Traditions like our monthly luncheons, Coffee with the Chamber and a steady supply of community events are intact and flourishing and responsive to the needs of our members and our community. Our membership has grown in concert with our burgeoning communities of Jonestown, Lago Vista, and Point Venture. Construction of new homes and the population of older homes with younger families has shifted our demographics and our expectations. The excitement of growth is coupled with the thrill of new objectives and new businesses. We have added resources and events as well as expanding our outreach to both the citizens and the businesses they serve. Our partnership with the governments

of Jonestown, Lago Vista and Point Venture contributes to helping new businesses get established, recognized, and promoted. It is a GREAT time to be on the North Shore! Stop by our Welcome Center in the Casey Building next to Sonic for information on area attractions, upcoming events, free maps, Chamber membership information and local businesses and services. Our website, North LakeTravisChamber.org is another resource for up-to-date lists of events and resources. We have also been blessed by a spirit of community that has contributed to a multitude of civic organizations. Volunteers eagerly collaborate with us, our city governments, our businesses and our citizens to serve the ever-expanding needs, desires and opportunities all of us fortunate enough to “Live Like We’re On Vacation”. This issue of our yearly guide is a special salute to the wonderful volunteers who have created the character of the North Shore. Together, we can fulfill our new slogan, “We May Live Like We’re on Vacation, But We Mean Business”!

A letter from the President

s a chef, I can’t help but draw a parallel between my profession and my new role as President of the NLT Chamber of Commerce. Anyone who has ever planned a massive feast and been responsible for preparing the food that hundreds will enjoy may understand the emotions involved -- honor, pride, fear, confidence, and so very, very secure in the knowledge that all my colleagues and staff share the same commitment to our mission, “To serve our members and communities by promoting tourism and business growth.” My recipe for our continued success has been written by all the previous Board members who have dedicated so much of their time and inspirational resources to developing programs and systems which faithfully execute our mission. Our menu will continue to include our traditional offerings; maybe with a couple of new spices added! Casino Night, La Primavera Bike Race, Jonestown CajunFest, golf tournaments, LagoFest, 4th of July Parade, and the Craft Beer Festival. As a growing community with changing demographics, we will embrace new ideas and seek success through increased participation from our members and community advocates. This year we are introducing the “I Buy Local” initiative which will promote local businesses. Every time a dollar is spent on the North Shore the domino effect of that single dollar is amplified significantly as it gets recirculated locally and provides benefits many times over. Everyone can register to attend any of our monthly luncheons, February through November, which feature timely presentations from businesses, community organizations, and government leaders. It is easy to register and pre-pay through our website, NorthLakeTravisChamber.org. Other networking opportunities are announced periodically. Our weekly newsletters and the calendar of events on our website offer updated information about our events and those of our members. Our office not only continues to offer a lending library of business-related publications, but also a conference room which is available to members, free of charge. And we include coffee! I am grateful for the opportunity to serve our community of entrepreneurs and small businesses. Our Executive Director, Jennifer Sandoval and office staff are eager to hear from you and incorporate your ideas into our planning. We may live like we’re on vacation but WE MEAN BUSINESS!

DARK SKY INITIATIVE ALLOWS STARGAZERS A CLEAR VIEW BY SCOTT AKANEWICH

magine you buy your first telescope after deciding to take up astronomy as a hobby and you wait for it to slowly get dark in order to try out your new instrument. You set it up, darkness finally falls and you look into the eyepiece for the very first time with the lens pointed skyward. However, instead of being filled with wonder at the vast display of celestial bodies in the heavens, you’re filled with anguish at what you see. Skyglow. In and around large cities, the enormous number of artificial lights – particularly those pointed upward to illuminate buildings – create what’s known as a “light dome,” which extends out into the night sky, disrupting the natural darkness. As a result, many of the stars, planets and constellations that were clearly visible as little as 100 years ago are now drowned out from view either partially or in some cases, completely. As a result, a program known as the Dark Sky Initiative has been undertaken in various places around the world with the goal to curb the amount of unnecessary artificial light that is permitted to emanate from large urban areas. The International Dark Sky Association was founded in 1988 with a simple mission – to protect the night from light pollution – and since that time chapters have sprung up all over the world in support of this vision,

including 20 foreign countries across five continents, with the central Texas chapter located in Killeen. Ann DaPrato, of the Jonestown Dark Sky Advocacy group, said the largest hurdle to

combating the ever-growing issue is making people aware it even exists. “For us, the biggest challenge is getting the word out to our community residents and businesses,” she said. “Our group hosts many fun events throughout the year to keep our community informed on how they can eliminate light pollution by improving their outdoor lighting.” LEFT: Lago Vista residents view the night sky through the lens of an Alvin scope, which opens up the heavens in making stars, planets and constellations visible. There are many steps that can be taken to help curtail the amount of light pollution, such as replacing regular light bulbs in streetlights – which are one of the primary sources of the problem – with orange or amber as opposed to the standard white. In addition, full-cutoff fixtures that prevent light from escaping upward or sideways are encouraged to further reduce their glow from spilling over into the darkness above. Jane Brunclik, of Lago Vista Starry Skies, said the community suffers in more ways than one. “Artificial light is disruptive to the circadian cycle of humans but also to the life cycle of wildlife,” she said. “Because Lago Vista is on the edge of a national wildlife refuge, this is of a particular concern. We’re losing touch with the natural beauty of the Hill Country through unstoppable development, but every one of us can turn off a light to save the beauty of our sky. The night skies have inspired songwriters, poets and writers through the ages, yet 80% of Europeans and North Americans have never seen the Milky Way.” Brunclik added some people simply don’t realize the impact their lights have. “Many are unaware of how their lighting affects their neighbors,” she said. “We receive complaints about light transfer regularly. Many people move out here to enjoy the view of the stars and they’re gradually being robbed of that joy.” Being able to look up at night and see all the heavens have to offer provided an invaluable opportunity to remain at one with the environment. “The ability to see stars and celestial bodies keeps us connected to our world and universe around us – it gives us a sense of wonder and the understanding there are bigger things than just us,” she said. “Gazing at a star-filled night sky shifts our perspective from ‘small us’ to an ‘inclusive bigger view’ of time and everyday events.” Become a local night sky advocate! The winning business was The Wild Navy owned and operated by Suzy Valles. This outstanding fashion boutique is new to our area and made its impact felt immediately. Suzy has been quick to support other small businesses by being an active advocate for them on social media. The community has embraced her boutique with such enthusiasm that within her first year she expanded her business.

Lake Travis Music Theatre/ Rising Stars

The Lake Travis Music Theatre is all about “Bringing Broadway to the North Shore,” and the program has done just that since 2007. It was created by directors and performers Barbara Graham and William Parcher, and has become extremely popular across the Hill Country arts community. The Theatre produces a musical every summer – for 2022 it’s Hello Dolly! – and offers open auditions to attract the best actors and singers from around the Hill Country area. Graham said the Theatre continues to gain traction because every aspect of it is done right, from the handmade costumes to the professional set designs. The Theatre also has a Rising Stars program, which gives youth from high school down to kindergarten a taste of musical theater performing. Graham said anywhere from 50 to 75 local youth join the shows, which in recent seasons have included Frozen Jr., 20

Twilight Concerts

From September through February, monthly Twilight Concerts are held at Jonestown’s Italian-style Villa Antonia, giving concertgoers an intimate and engaging musical experience. Creative Director Barbara Graham said she brings in acts from all over and always makes sure to book top-notch musicians. Classical, gospel and jazz music are the most popular styles at the monthly concerts. For the 2022-23 season, Graham said she has booked some exciting acts that concertgoers will be excited to hear. September will feature Texas-based singer Grace Coldicott, while October will feature

pianist Sean Giddings. In November, the Atlas Tango Project, a quintet that performs original nuevo tango compositions, will perform. For December, a Christmas concert by singer and worship leader Jaleesa McCreary will take center stage. January will feature gospel group Teddy Grover, and February will showcase a symphony of strings with violinist Allison Sargent. Concerts are held the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for appetizers and mingling at the Villa before the concert, and artists typically stay for a reception following the concert. Hill Country Singers

Led by director and renowned opera singer William Parcher, the Hill Country Singers is a unique chorus that offers the local community two different concerts a year—one in the spring and one in the fall. The Hill Country Singers was started in 1994 by musician Harry Hoffman. Before the pandemic began in 2020, the group was 80 singers strong, and while numbers have dwindled a bit since then, the group is making a comeback and rebuilding with a slew of new talent. Lago Vista Players

Lago Vista Players is one of the longest running organizations on the North Shore, with a history that spans nearly 30 years, said Graham. The acting troupe puts on two plays a year and promises to bring a taste of Broadway to the Hill Country. Previous shows have included Steel Magnolias and Barefoot in the Park. The Players’ spring 2022 play is a comedy called Exit the Body by Fred Carmichael and directed by Elizabeth Lucking. Their fall show will be Arsenic and Old Lace with Bill Parcher directing. If you listen carefully, you will hear the call. While wandering the trails at Balcones Canyonlands Wildlife Refuge, several species of birds can be seen, but first you will hear them, said Kelly Purkey, Balcones refuge manager. “You can tell what kind of bird it is by the cadence,” she said, of a nearby wren. “Some birds have more complex calls than others.” More than 290 species of birds can be found at Balcones, chief among them the black-capped vireo and golden-cheeked warbler – which are both classified as endangered songbirds – as well as a wide range of species including

Eastern Phoebe songbird hawks, eagles, vultures, woodpeckers, crows, cardinals, jays and owls, just to name a few. The reason Balcones attracts such a wide variety of birds is due to the variance in the refuge itself, said Purkey. “The diversity of the habitats is what makes the difference,” she said. “You have the big live oak motts, the understory and the grasslands.” The refuge is a crossroads where both eastern and western birds flock, creating an aviary melting pot featuring the best of both regions simultaneously. Balcones offers four public areas available for hiking, wildlife observation, photography and hunting, but the winged creatures are the primary attraction for enthusiasts

known as “birders,” with 12 different trails to hike in search of one’s favorite. The trails vary in length from 0.2 miles, such as the Pollinator Path, all the way up to Rimrock Trail, a rugged 1.6-mile loop that takes hikers high above their surroundings for a spectacular panoramic view of the Texas Hill Country. In order to fully enjoy the birdwatching experience, there are certain must-have items hikers should plan on bringing along, said Purkey. “The most important thing is a good pair of binoculars, along with a guide to be able to identify the different birds,” she said. “Mornings are usually the best time because that’s when the birds are the most active.” Adding bird watching to the hiking experience provides an extra incentive to many, she added. “I think it gets people outdoors with a purpose,” she said. “Also, some people like the challenge of tracking down particular birds.” Balcones located at 24518 Ranch Rd 1431, Marble Falls and is open year-round from sunrise to sunset. The park also features the Shin Oak Observation Deck and a headquarters that also serves as a visitors information center. Admission is free of charge. Jones Brothers Park | Jonestown

The lake is the highlight at Jones Brothers Park where a lengthy shoreline along Lake Travis among the 32 acres allows for swimming, fishing and boating from the three public ramps. Daily launch fees are $20 per trailer, or annual passes are available to city residents at Jonestown City Hall. The park also includes covered picnic sites, ball fields, a tennis and basketball court, walking paths, a playscape and a sand volleyball court. The park also has two pavilions that can be reserved for a small fee. The park is open daily from dawn to midnight. Fireman’s Park | Jonestown

Fireman’s Park is the perfect shady park to visit for a picnic with its offering of 10 picnic tables and a wood burning smoker. The park was originally created by the Jonestown Volunteer Fire Department for its annual Labor Day barbecue fundraiser but has since been improved by the City and now includes a connection to Jones Brothers Parks via the one-mile Canyonlands Trail. Canyonlands Trail | Jonestown

Canyonlands Trail is a one-mile, out and back trail that is good for hiking and walking for all skill levels. Sunset Park gives outdoor enthusiasts a lot to look forward to. A moderate hiking trail just over a mile in length surrounds the park, and if sports are your thing, there are soccer, baseball and softball fields as well as volleyball courts for the public to enjoy. Arkansas Bend Park | Lago Vista

Over 300 acres of peaceful vistas along the north shore of Lake Travis are offered at Arkansas Bend. The park’s two miles of shoreline provide access to the water for fishing, swimming and boating via two boat ramps and a dock. A playground as well as several picnic table sites can also be found at the park. The cost is $5 per person to access the park for the day. For those looking to stay longer than just a day, Arkansas Bend offers 18 campsites, each with water, electrical hookups, a picnic table, barbecue grill, lantern hook and a fire pit. Reservations are not required but are recommended, and the daily fee is $20 for tents and $30 for RVs. Arkansas Bend is open daily from dawn to twilight, and is located at 16900

Lago Vista City Pool | Lago Vista

If you need somewhere to cool off in the Texas heat, then the Lago Vista City Pool is the place for you. The pool offers a shallow beach entry, splash buckets and giant flowing mushroom for children, as well as a free swim area, lap lanes and a deck with patio tables and chairs. The pool also has two pavilions that can be rented for a small fee. Daily fees to enjoy the pool range from $1.50 to $3.50. Season passes and 10-visit passes are also available. The pool closes during the winter months but is open from noon to 7 p.m. from May through October. The pool is located at 8039 Bar K Ranch Road. At Turkey Bend, the views of the bluebonnets in the spring are one of the most picturesque. But the recreation area offers activities all year round. Easy access to Lake Travis provides fishing, swimming and kayaking/ canoeing options, and picnic tables and grills can be found along the shoreline. For those looking to stay longer, camping is also offered for $25 a night. Day use of the park is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and younger. COX SPRINGS SCHOOL HOUSE A tiny school with a rich history

weathered white wooden structure sits on Old Burnet Road, near the city line between Jonestown and Lago Vista. Leaning with the wind and primarily held erect by the brick fireplace, this small building was recently saved from total collapse by a group of concerned local citizens. This structure, which dates back to the late 1880s, was once a one-room schoolhouse for the children of local ranchers and farmers and has a rich and storied history. The first school was located in the Anderson Bend area, but moved in early 1900 to be near Cox Springs for a freshwater source and to be more central to the students living in the Lago Vista/Jonestown area. It was rebuilt in 1908 on a five-acre lot deeded from the Simpson farm on the east corner of Lohmans Crossing Road and Ledge Acres Road. There it officially became the Cox Springs School. The 1908 schoolhouse was constructed of timbers from local live oak, cedar, and wood salvaged from the previous building used as a school. The school was also used as a place to vote and for outdoor plays, barbecues and neighborhood get-togethers. In 1917, the schoolhouse burned and was rebuilt. It burned again in 1927 and was last rebuilt in 1928 after fundraising by the local American Legion, Lions Club, Boy Scouts and residents. That’s the building today. 28

In early 1941, the new Mansfield Dam on the Colorado River created Lake Travis, flooding the fertile river bottom lands in the Anderson Bend and Cox Springs area. This destroyed or separated the local farm and ranch communities. Folks sold their properties to the Lower Colorado River Authority, dismantled their homes, cleared their barns and fences and moved away. The Cox Springs School lost most of its students. Mr. Carlton and Mr. Pearson, both local ranchers, joined together and spent $100 to have the structure cut in half, loaded onto flatbed trucks and moved it to its new high and dry location on Old Burnet Road. For the next 20 years, the Cox Springs School on Old Burnet Road provided a one-room/ one-teacher education to the local students. Rural schools were chartered for grades 1-7, officially adding grade 8 in 1951 – although some students over the years also completed grades 9-11 there. Twelfth graders left Cox Springs to finish high school in Leander or other larger schools. The last group of students left Cox Springs in 1960 to transfer to the new Lago Vista schools, ending over seven decades of providing education to the community. Since then, the building was used as a storage warehouse for the Lago Vista Common School District, by the Jonestown Church of Christ, and as

an occasional hunting lodge. For the last 25 years, the schoolhouse has sat vacant and deteriorating. The Cox Springs Schoolhouse Restoration Society was formed in 2020 to preserve this great piece of local, Texas and American history. As an official 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, the group is applying for historical status. Plans are to restore the schoolhouse to historic status for educational purposes and for use as a meeting place to be enjoyed

by the community. Their three-phase plan is to 1) Stabilize the building structurally, 2) Refurbish the exterior to preserve the historic character of the school, and 3) Restore the interior and furnish with period items. Thanks to generous contributions and volunteer efforts, the Stabilization phase was completed in 2021 with the intallation of a new foundation. he history of the North Shore includes tales of great achievement and inspiration. From living through recurring floods and droughts, the rocky terrain, conflicts between Native American tribes to the arrival of settlers – our predecessors learned that challenges are best met and overcome through collaboration. As the population of the North Shore has evolved and shifted from pioneers to vacationers and eventually to longterm residents, that spirit of collaboration never waned. It has, in fact, grown to include a raft of civic organizations that support and promote the diverse interests of the communities on the North Shore of Lake Travis. We are fortunate to live in an “involved community” – a place where the spirit of collaboration that originated with our first inhabitants still prevails. One of our oldest community groups was founded in 1978 before the incorporation of Lago Vista, Jonestown and Point Venture. It still remains the largest organization on the North Shore. The Lago Vista Women’s Club was founded by Ann Murrow, a very active new resident

Keep Lago Vista Beautiful (KLVB) of Lago Vista, with the vision of providing the growing community of women with activities and programs that would promote their individual interests and while supporting the needs of the community. Today, the Lago Vista Women’s Club provides funds to a multitude of other community organizations and scholarships to further the education of women. The North Shore also boasts two active and productive Lions Clubs, The Lions Club of Lago Vista and the Point Venture Lions Club. Together and individually, they promote blood drives, barbeque fund raisers, Vision Care in local schools, as well as projects for the homeless and pediatric cancer patients. Another unique and very appreciated organization, The Lago Vista Volunteers, provides a medical devices to residents of the North Shore. Hospital beds, wheelchairs, walkers, orthopedic boots, etc. are offered on loan and free of charge for as long as they are needed. Local residents with green thumbs and a love of the outdoors may be interested in Keep Lago Vista Beautiful (KLVB). This focus of this group is landscaping and beautifing our already beautiful surroundings. KLVB work days are a great way to exercise outside while making new friends and giving back to the community. The Lago Vista Players, Twilight Concerts, Lake Travis Music Theatre, Rising Stars and Hill Country Singers are all composed of lively mix of local residents with a drive to stay involved in theatre and musical performance. Each of these organizations attract and develop amazing talent and present professional quality entertainment to eager audiences. Volunteerism on the North Shore is ingrained in the DNA of those who are born and raised here and those who have been transported here by destiny or choice. Civic, non-profit organizations from scouting to weaving hats for cancer patients abound – our community is involved with being COMMUNITY! The department provides fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services from six fire stations strategically located throughout the district. Travis County Emergency Services District 1 has received Class 2 Public Protection Classification rating from the Insurance Service Office (ISO). Class 2 is the second highest with only 1.1 percent of all fire departments across the U.S. and only 4 percent of departments in Texas have received a Class 2 or higher. The score is tabulated based on a variety of things including fire department equipment, deployments analysis, staffing, water supply, training, communications, and community risk reduction.
