WINEMAKER INTERVIEW What about Southeastern Arizona excites you to grow grapes and make wine every day? I have always been a big fan of mountain fruit and the wines made from those areas. Whether it is Purisima Mountain, Howell Mountain, or Mount Veeder, I have gravitated toward the lushness and intensity of the high-altitude wines. When I investigated our site, at 5,000-foot elevation with a 10,000-foot mountain in the back yard coupled with volcanic soil and a creek with 100-year old oak trees, I thought why not here! After twelve vintages, I am learning more about the grapes that are being produced from our unique vineyard location. I am excited about the possibilities and building the skills of my craft. I look forward to sharing the fruits of our labor and my passion with you. What makes LDV Winery wines unique? It is all about our place! My winemaking style focuses on accentuating the grapes that are grown here and showcasing the fruit’s nuances in each wine. We get what I call the reverse California effect. During the ripening period, the Chiricahua Mountains create a micro-climate – hot sunny mornings, cooler, cloudy afternoons, and cool nights. California has cool foggy mornings and sunny, hot afternoons. In either case, there is a long respite between the heat of the day from one day to the next. This differential intensifies the flavors and creates bright acidity. We believe so much in this place that our wines are made from 100% estate grown fruit from our vineyard. What 3 words describe LDV wines and why? Plush. Robust. Memorable. Our winemaking style is extremely gentle with very little manipulation and long aging to create a plush, soft mouth feel. Robust because we do not make shy wines. Our mountain fruit is intense and highly concentrated with nice acidity. As a result, our wines are always memorable. You know when you have had an LDV Winery wine and the red wines in particular have a lingering finish that keeps you guessing. What can customers expect from LDV Winery in the future? A continued commitment to quality and making clean wines with little additives and no use of animal products, enzymes, or artificial colors, flavors, or tannins. An increase in our wine’s depth and complexity is expected. Keep in mind, we are drinking red wines right now from 2 to 6-year-old vines that have not even come close to hitting their strides. I taste wines year to year and each vintage is getting closer to what I imagined when we selected our varietals. I hope I am getting better too at understanding our grapes and how to turn them into wine and improving our farming practices and techniques.

OUR STORY LDV Winery’s Grape to Glass Journey The magic of the “grape to glass” journey is the result of an undeniable connection to the land. LDV Winery is an opportunity to make wines that showcase from where the grapes were grown. None of this would have been possible without finding the perfect spot to grow world class wine grapes. The five key locational factors that needed to be satisfied on one location were: mountain, water, drainage, soils, and no commercial agriculture. We found all assets on our vineyard site in the Chiricahua Mountain foothills in Southeastern Arizona. Mountain Environment The vineyard site needed to have a high enough altitude to create a 30-degree temperature differential between the daytime high and nighttime low. Also, a large mountain was needed to impact the local microclimate. The vineyard location at 5,000 feet above sea level with the 10,000-foot peaks of the Chiricahua Mountains soaring behind the vineyard was perfect. Pristine and Plentiful Water The vineyard sets atop the Willcox Playa aquifer which supplies reliable, pure water.

The winemaking process is like turning a kaleidoscope; any one element shifts ... temperature, humidity, trace elements ... and a whole different wine emerges.

Superior Air and Water Drainage The site needed to drain away summer rains and move springtime cold air past the vineyard. Located on the banks of the 600-foot wide Ash Creek provides an excellent drainageway for water and air while the vineyard’s very rocky soil quickly drains away moisture. Volcanic Soil The violence and heat of volcanic activity created soils that impart pleasurable and unpredictable characteristics to wine grapes. LDV’s site lies within the blast zone of the Turkey Creek Caldera eruption that occurred approximately 16 million years ago. No Previous Commercial Agriculture The vineyard site was chosen because there has never been any previous commercial agricultural activity on or near the property ensuring a chemical free spot.

OUR PHILOSOPHY LDV’s philosophy represented in the winery’s logo exemplifies the inseparable relationship between farming and winemaking. The property has supported people for hundreds of years based on the history and geology, as well as the artifacts found in Ash Creek that cuts through LDV Winery’s 40-acres. The first circle honors the original farmers – the Native Americans who grew corn and squash along Ash Creek. The second circle represents LDV, the next generation of farmers growing wine grapes. The third circle is about turning the grapes into wine. LDV Winery’s philosophy is focused on being good land stewards and hoping that the next generation will continue this quality farming legacy.

OWNERS PROFILE From transforming cities to nurturing grapes, serendipity describes the LDV Winery evolution. As professional community and strategic planners, LDV owners Curt Dunham and Peggy Fiandaca made a career developing successful plans for clients. That life journey of possibilities has led to the development of a vineyard estate. CURT DUNHAM

LDV Winery Owner/Winemaker & Vineyard Manager

I first fell in love with fine wine in June 1975 at the ripe age of 16. My parents brought home a bottle of 1974 BV Cabernet Sauvignon from a trip to Napa Valley and let me have a taste. Being Blue Nun and Lambrusco drinkers (remember those?), they were probably looking forward to watching me make a sour face. Were they wrong! I couldn’t believe a grape could taste like blackberries, cherries, coffee, and chocolate. With no funds to pursue a fine wine habit through college and my early working years, I focused on cooking. Learning this craft would serve me well. When afforded the ability to start enjoying wine seriously for the first time, I went all in. I started visiting vineyards in California, not just going to the tasting rooms but making appointments with winemakers at small establishments. I learned a lot about making wine from those doing it, never dreaming I would someday be making it myself – with my name on the bottle! Cooking has strongly influenced my winemaking in two ways. First, I learned to cook and season foods by sense of smell. I cook with my nose. Second, the wines I am crafting are always a result of me trying to match them with food. My goal is to eventually have a wine to go with almost any kind of food because I don’t think food and wine can be separated. After 12 vintages, I am learning more about the grapes that are being produced from our unique vineyard location. I am excited about the possibilities and building the skills of my craft. I look forward to sharing the fruits of our labor and my passion with you.

PEGGY FIANDACA

LDV Winery Owner/Brand Manager

Wine is a character actor in every Italian family and my family was no different. The Fiandaca family emigrated from Sicily to a Chicago Italian neighborhood. My mom’s father (my grandfather), William Hogan was a well-known bootlegger in Kentucky during Prohibition. With this kind of heritage, my urban planning career was a sidestep on the road to growing grapes and producing wines. Every day brings a new experience in the vineyard or winery, where my creativity, knowledge, and patience are challenged. Watching someone taste wine and identify the flavor characteristics for the first time or examine a vine closely with a new appreciation for its role in producing that wine, provides me with such satisfaction. That connection to the land, our environment, and to each other is what the winemaking journey is all about.
