Centralia’s Historic Battlefield Missouri Civil War history at battlefield and park.
C
entralia. Not a place one thinks of when chasing Civil War history. But it is the place of the shortest battle in the Civil War, with “Bloody Bill” Anderson, along with Jesse James gunning down Union Federalists in one of the most terrorizing ambushes ever. The Centralia Battlefield marks the location that a horrific incident was completed that began between the people of Centralia, the railroad, guerilla fighters, and Union forces intersecting on the train tracks at the corner of Missouri and Love Avenues. Two dozen Union soldiers were riding the railways home to northwest Missouri for some time off. Civilians were also passengers on the train heading to Centralia. Anderson’s sisters had just been killed in a jail collapse at Liberty. He was angry and crazier than usual, history recounted. Some say the attack at Centralia was out of retaliation in what he felt like was the government and Union force’s fault. Anderson first raided and looted the town, with the 100 or so townsfolk hiding and generally getting out of his bunch’s way. He then planned an ambush in the middle of town in Centralia. Anderson, along with a young Jesse James, ordered railroad ties stacked high to stop the train. His guerilla army pulled union soldiers off of the train, and systematically massacred them in the most brutal ways imaginable. Everyone was scalped. The brutality got a lot worse, and Anderson made sure that when Major A.V.E. Johnston, a former school teacher, and 155 troops arrived in Centralia later 10 VACATION NEWS

Photos provided that day, they found the 22 federal soldiers that Bloody Bill and his band of raiders had killed and mutilated in the most vicious ways imaginable. Anderson high tailed it to the woods outside of Centralia, about 3½ mile southeast to a creek area that surrounded what would become a very bloody battlefield. When Major Johnston came to respond, his slaughtered soldiers were left on the tracks for him to find. The slaughter at the train tracks was on the morning of Sept. 27, 1864. The Civil War had been raging for three devastating years already. Anderson’s army had taken one Union prisoner with them in hopes to be able to trade him for one of their men who the federals were holding. Bloody Bill and Jesse made sure that the responding major would bring troops to retaliate, so they took their band of 80 guerrilas out to what is now known by the Centralia Historic Society as the Centralia Battlefield. It’s located a bit outside of town, along a creek in the woods on North Range Line Road. It feels like a hallowed site now, a bit of a cemetery feel, if you will. It’s very quiet out there, and as you climb up the neatly mowed path from the bottom Confederate Monument, to the top Union Monument, a solemn stillness falls on the place. Your imagination sees that the brush weed is a dark maroon color here, where 130 men fell in 3 minutes under Anderson’s army’s revolver fire. April 22 - May 5, 2022

On September 27, 1864 Captain William “Bloody Bill” Anderson and about eighty men rode into Centralia, Missouri in search of the whereabouts of Federal troops. The search soon turned to looting and robbing fueled by liquor. A train arriving from the east was robbed and twenty-three Federal soldiers were taken off and all but one was shot.
• Info provided by www.visitcolumbiamo.com Anderson drew those troops to the open field surrounded by creek and trees, where they ambushed the Union army from all sides. Union soldiers were ordered off of horseback with their black powder rifles by their major. Guerilla soldiers had five to six revolvers each. They remained on horses, and attacked the Union troops for three minutes until most were dead, only 30 out of 155 surviving. The Battlefield has a lovely park on the backside of a cattle pasture. There is a walking bridge over the creek leading to the sacred battlegrounds. It’s not your typical tourist sight. But it’s a good place to have a quiet walk and some reflection time.
The battlefield is located about an hour and 45 minutes from Lake Ozark, north of Columbia.

To start, the event has a new name, HK’s Lake of the Ozarks Open, and play stretches across two days — Thursday, May 19, and Friday, May 20 — and two Lake of the Ozarks premier golf courses — The Cove and Porto Cima. “The HK’s committee introduced a new name to draw attention to new opportunities in 2022,” said Peter Brown, chairman of the HK’s committee. “This year’s event offers more golf, more giveaways and more on-course events. Participants will have fun and will walk away with a good feeling, knowing they’ve helped advance local health care.” In more good news, HK’s will continue its affiliation with the Kansas City Chiefs. Dante Hall, a Chiefs wide receiver and special teams player, will serve as the event’s honorary chair. Hall, a two-time NFL Pro Bowler, played

The format for HK’s Lake of the Ozarks Open will be a best-ball competition with four- person teams. Each player on each team plays his or her own golf ball throughout the round. This traditional treetop zipline goes from one tree-suspended platform to the next. Explore the outdoors at Adrenaline Zipline Company in Camdenton as you fly through the trees and enjoy the landscape from eight ziplines and a swinging wood bridge. Jeff Johnson and his two sons, Jackson and Jacob, own the business. A banker for 20+ years, Jeff purchased The Shepherd of the Hills in Branson with a business partner in 2017, where there are also ziplines, and decided to open up Adrenaline Zipline Company at the Lake this year. Before you go, make sure to dress appropriately, wearing closed-toe shoes. The weight limit to participate is 250 pounds. Customers are required to sign a waiver prior to going, and will receive an orientation and safety briefing after being fitted into a harnesses. Adults are $89, and kids 12 and under are $79. The return of the Snerd
T
he Ozark Snerd or Hillbilly has come back home to Lake of the Ozarks. According to American Giants, the company that refurbishes aging Muffler Men, he is now fully restored and ready to be set back up. Summer USA, the owners of the giant, are still working out the details of exactly where he will stand, so setup won’t happen till a bit later in the year. “We are super happy with the way he turned out and glad he’s back home,” a spokesman for American Giants said in a Facebook post. “He’s going to look great standing across the street from the Chief once again.” Lake Ozark acquired The Chief a few years ago, another Muffler Man refurbished by American Giants. It sits near the entrance to the former Two Bit Town. Return to Glory
After months of restoration, and years in storage, the historic giant is headed back to where it stood for many years. Thanks to the efforts of the team at American Giants and the request of Summer USA owner Joe Page, the statue will soon be in place for future generations to enjoy.

FEATURE Locals have a couple of names for it — the Country Bumpkin, the Hillbilly or the Ozark Halfwit — but American Giants cofounder Joel Baker said its real name, as indicated in the catalog listing it for sale in the 60s, is Mortimer Snerd. It was based on a ventriloquist dummy. In the 90s RoadsideAmerica.com called it the Happy Halfwit and that nickname stuck with some people. These statues were originally sold as roadside attractions and advertising icons for businesses such as car dealerships. There are a number of varieties including the classic Paul Bunyan, pirates, cowboys, soldiers and other mascots. The “snerd” was made in the mid-60s and brought to Bagnell Dam. It stood there until 2013 when it was taken down due to damage and placed Above: The Chief was restored and placed into storage. Baker estimates back on The Strip a few years ago. there are maybe 20 snerds in existence, about 180 complete fiberglass giants, and countless pieces and parts. He has seen full giants sell for $15,000-$20,000 unrestored. Baker says they restore between 1-3 giants a year from their shop in Southern Illinois but this was their first snerd. The Lake’s giant had a lot of damage to the boot area, he said. Fiberglass damage and holes had to be repaired or rebuilt, it was sanded down, and brought back to life with several fresh coats of paint. The other Muffler Man was restored by American Giants after Iguana Watersports commissioned the work. In 2016 Chief Bagnell was restored and put back in its original location near the top of The Strip. “I appreciate the business owners taking the effort of keeping them alive and restoring them,” Baker said. “I admire them for getting it back up for the community to enjoy it. It’s a big job, it’s a big restoration. It’s a sure sign of summer when farmers markets begin opening up around the Lake area. Each one is unique and has different items to offer. If you are looking for local, home-made, and fun items these markets have a wide selection of crafts, baked goods, produce and other merchandise from local vendors. Check out our list of where to go this season.

Plants, perennials and annuals, plant baskets and potted plants, and seasonal produce are always available. Homemade Mennonite cream and fruit pies, cookies, sweat breads, and canned goods are also always in stock. This time of year, potatoes and onions are plentiful with locally-grown asparagus, leaf lettuce and oyster mushrooms coming in soon. It’s one of those markets where you are sure to find a little bit of everything and something unique.

he Sunrise Beach Little Theater and Community Center has a wide variety of events scheduled this year.
