GRAPEVINE LORDCONEWS

ISSUE 268 | OCTOBER 2023

Red Deer is on the Horizon!

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all staff who showed their support for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation by wearing an orange shirt. Your participation speaks volumes about your commitment to honouring the indigenous peoples of Canada. Additionally, we extend a special thanks to our dedicated Human Resources team for their tremendous effort in providing shirts for everyone. Their thoughtful gesture ensured that every member of the Lordco family could join in this important commemoration.

“I would like to personally thank everyone who wore orange for National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Seeing the amount of support across the Lordco community is always so amazing to see.”

– Candace Gottschalk, Vice President, Human Resources.

Your participation exemplifies the unity and empathy that this day embodies. Together, we stand united in our mission to promote understanding, respect, and reconciliation, not only today but in the days to come. Thank you all for embodying the true spirit of community and passion. Your contributions are invaluable to our collective efforts to honour and uplift the indigenous communities of Canada.

In anticipation of the grand opening of our Red Deer store (#115), we spoke with Shaun Wheater, the Regional Manager overseeing the dynamic growth of our Alberta region. Here’s what he had to say!

Why is Red Deer a great spot for a new Lordco store?

- Red Deer is a great spot because it's a very central location for the province and Red deer is growing, affordable and welcoming.

What do you like about the people in Red Deer?

- The people in Red Deer are down to earth, family oriented and respectful of one another.

What can you tell us about the success of expanding Lordco into Alberta?

-We have been here for four years and are coming up to opening our sixth store, we have grown our name brand through customer service and we are at just the beginning of being as successful as our BC locations. Success in Alberta comes from our reputation in BC... Before we came to Alberta, we had customers asking when we are coming and once, we arrived they are saying "thank God you are here."

Chris Saunders- #42 Lake Country

Bought wheel bearing kit with the help of Chris. He went over and beyond with great service and knowledge of what I needed. Searched out all the parts at lightning speed while being very courteous and smiling the whole time . Work places need more people like him to give the customer a great buying experience .

Great job Chris

Johnathan Eaton - #35 Cranbrook

Was in need of a double check on part for my car and Johnathan at the service call desk was very informative and answered all questions I needed:) I would tell people to ask for Johnathan for he will give the best and clear solutions to your car problems.

Connor

Park - #6 Port Coquitlam

Connor at the parts desk was honestly the best kindest person. I was very stressed and needed help finding some spark plugs and he helped me and made it so much easier than I could’ve imagined. I hope he gets some recognition from his employers. They are very lucky they have his help!!!

Xanthe Barber- #47 Sidney

I always receive good service from Lordco Sidney, but today was exceptional, young lady name of Xanthe went out of her way to locate an air filter for a generator. She was cheerful, polite, efficient. She is an asset to your company, and I just want to thank her and you for the good service.

#8 - Abbotsford

On September 11, 2023 I stopped at this location to pick up an item. The young male working behind the parts counter greeted me and asked if I needed any assistance in finding the product that I was looking for, within a couple of minutes of walking into the store. He showed me the product and explained the difference between my two options, and then rang it up and also did the payment at the cashier desk. Very friendly, knowledgeable service.

I then hopped into my car to leave, only to find out that my starter had decided to stop working, so I called for a tow truck to tow my van to the repair shop. However, I had parked adjacent to the front doors, which meant my van needed to be pushed out of its space and then turned in a different direction to be picked up by the Stinger on the tow truck. So as the tow truck driver was pushing my van, I was trying to turn the wheel which was difficult without the usual power steering.

The female driver of the Lordco parts vehicle returned from her deliveries, saw our predicament, hopped out of her car and helped push the van which aided in being able to turn the steering wheel.

Considering there were several construction workers very nearby who could have assisted, it speaks volumes of the type of employees that Lordco hirers as both individuals were extremely helpful.

Thank you to both of you for being so helpful.

World Arthritis Day

October 12th is World Arthritis Day! World Arthritis Day aims to raise awareness for musculoskeletal conditions such as arthritis and support those affected by musculoskeletal disorders. This day is all about spreading information about prevention, support, and treatment.

What is Arthritis?

Arthritis is part of a larger group of musculoskeletal disorders that affect the joints. There are more than 200 different types of musculoskeletal disease, but the most common in Canada is arthritis, which affects an estimated 6 million Canadians.

The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis causes the tissue between the bones to break down. Osteoarthritis can be caused by injury, overuse, or repetitive stress on the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis on the other hand, happens when the immune system attacks joints in the body, breaking down the lining of the joints. This type of arthritis can be caused by many factors such as genetics and other environmental factors. Arthritis generally causes pain and stiffness in the joints.

Reducing Your Risk of Arthritis

Unfortunately, there is no sure way to prevent arthritis, but luckily, there are things you can do to reduce your risk. Maintaining mobility and function in your joints is one of the best things you can do! Stay active and incorporate a range of strength, aerobics, flexibility, and balance exercises into your fitness routine. Another way to reduce your risk of arthritis is to prevent injuries. Repetitive movements at work, in sports, and during daily life can lead to early wear and tear on your joints.

At work, make sure to avoid musculoskeletal injuries (MSI). These are often caused by repetitive activities, forceful exertion, lifting and lowering, or awkward postures while working. These types of injuries most commonly affect the neck, shoulders, back, arms, elbows, wrists, fingers, and knees, which are also the most common places for arthritis. To keep yourself and your co-workers safe, encourage proper body mechanics and posture, proper rest and recovery, and proper nutrition and hydration. If you’re concerned about MSIs, visit the Health and Safety page on Lordco Connect or contact OHS@lordco.com for tips to keep your joints safe!

To further reduce your risk of arthritis, make sure to warm up, stretch, and cool down when playing sports and exercising. Reducing repetitive movements in your daily life can also help decrease the strain on your joints. However, if repetitive or exerting movements are required in your job, sport, or life, ergonomic and safety equipment can help. Additionally, you can talk to your doctor about ways to reduce injury if you have concerns or a family history of arthritis.

How Can You Help?

On October 12th, help spread awareness about musculoskeletal diseases and injuries. Spreading awareness can help others receive a diagnosis, proper treatment, and find a support system. Help make a difference this National Arthritis Day!sure to refer them to their doctor.

LOWER MAINLAND FORT LANGLEY GOLF COURSE

VANCOUVER ISLAND FAIRWINDS GOLF COURSE

OHS is shining a light on the Parksville Warehouse.

OHS was recently visiting our Island warehouse, conducting a safety audit. While reviewing their forklift pre-shift \inspection sheets, another board caught our eye. This special project board listed a variety of other safety tasks necessary for the smooth running of the warehouse, (first aid kits stocked, eye wash station refilled and clean, keeping product off the floor and all work areas tidy). Each task was assigned to a more senior staff member for overall responsibility. This helps ensure tasks get done timely, they don’t fall onto one person and allows the senior members to buddy with a new co- worker to show them the ropes. They keep track of when the tasks are completed, who completed them, then management and JHSC committee member’s review. This takes Planning for Safety to a whole new level. In talking with the staff, they appreciate helping, find they stay engaged and motivated and most importantly keep staff safe.

Way to go Team Darci and staff for keeping up physical and mental health and safety. Both are key to safety success.

Learning from our past.

You’ve heard the phrase hindsight is 20/20…... well, that is often the case in the world of safety. After someone has been hurt, we think of all the steps we should have done differ ently; the PPE we should have worn, a missed opportunity for refresher training, a process that isn’t working but still used. Most of the time, it is a series of actions that contribute to an incident. Below is a story from an actual Lordco employee. Our hope is that their story will help you and your coworkers learn from their experience so that a similar incident can be prevented at your Lordco site.

We had two bigger product spills in our Lordco locations in September. In both cases, staff needed to be evacuated from the area, specialized gear and equipment used for cleaning up and spill kits replenished after use. No doubt this has happened in your location…. Do you have a plan? Do you pull the SDS? Do you know if the product is hazardous? Who should you call for larger spills? Stay tuned for a revamp of the Lordco Spill Response Plan and how you will play a part.
