theyâre across every îž ensure aspect of royal life. âKate and William are already feeling the strain of Meghan and Harryâs departure â not only are their public appearances being increased but thereâs the added pressures of what their roles will entail moving forward without Harry in support. âThe fact that one day William and then little George will be King weighs heavily on their minds.â Indeed, in a rare show of emotion, Kate was seen wiping away a tear as her husband spoke about the Holocaust at the memorial last week, and friends say sheâs more fragile than ever. Our source says Kate has always been determined to juggle her royal duties with being a hands-on mother and she canât help but worry that her increased workload will take her away from her children. Sheâd be absolutely lost without her.â But Kateâs rumoured to have confided in pals that she canât help but feel sad and resentful towards Meghan and Harry for leaving her and other royals â including Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and the Countess of Wessex (see story, page 20) to pick up the slack. Kate hasnât spoken to either Harry or Meghan since their shock announcement a month ago, and the rift between them is deeper than ever. âShe is extremely sad about the way itâs turned out because ultimately she still loves Harry and wishes she could talk to him,â says the
insider. âShe misses him and fears sheâll never be close to him again.â While Kate has long enjoyed a good relationship with the Queen, the last few months have brought the two women even closer. Kate has been âterribly concernedâ about the 93-yearold throughout the past few months amid Prince Andrewâs
fall from grace and Harryâs heartbreaking decision to leave the family. She is said to check in with her husbandâs grandmother almost daily. âShe always asks if thereâs anything she can do, and makes it very clear that she and William are committed for the long haul.â For his part, William is doing whatever he can to

If Meghan thought her move to Canada would solve all her problems, she obviously hadnât banked on her estranged father Thomas Markle, who has threatened to speak out about her every 30 days until she makes contact. The angry 75-year-old told Good Morning Britain, âIf after this interview, if I donât hear from somebody in 30 days, Iâll give 30 days and Iâm going to try again, because 30 days is enough time to get back to me. I donât want to sit in silence in my living room for the rest of my life, waiting for someone to call me back.â The Mexico-based retiree admitted his bombshell media interviews would âcause problemsâ with his daughter and her husband, but he believes speaking publicly about their rift overwhelmed. Heâs making sure that the time they spend together is extra special and is planning romantic dinners and weekend getaways.â Heâs even spoken to the Queen to make it clear that while theyâre happy to take on extra workload, their family will always come first. âThe Queenâs been very understanding of that and
is now his only hope of a reconciliation. When asked what he would say to Meghan if she was watching the show, he said, âIâd tell her, âI love you, letâs sit down and work this out.ââ While his message for Harry would be, âMan up and fly down and see me and we will talk.â Thomas hasnât spoken to his daughter since missing her wedding back in 2018 after suffering heart problems. Heâd earlier infuriated her by posing for paparazzi photos. But he told the show he loved his daughter and was desperate to meet his grandson Archie. However, he blasted the coupleâs decision to step aside from the royal family. âI think theyâve hurt the Queen, I think theyâve hurt the royals and it just doesnât work,â he said. âIâm a little

âMy wife is home with the ïŹu,â he muttered to a reporter. âA lot of that going around.â But once inside among the rest of the A-list stars, a witness says Keith let his guard down and told friends what was really going on. âHe seemed incredibly sad and distracted,â says one onlooker backstage at Los Angelesâ Staples Center. âIt was clear something deeper was going on. He looked visibly distressed â kind of like a defeated man.â Adds another, âHe ïŹt in with the sombre mood as everyone had just found out Kobe Bryant had died, but it was clear something else was going on with Keith.â

KOBEâS DATE W We mourn the loss of an NBA legend and his darling girl
K
KOBE BRYANT 1978-2020
Two of Giannaâs teammates, their parents, and her coach died in the horrific crash.
obe Bryant understood life is short. âThings change in the blink of an eye. People go to work and donât come back. One minute theyâre living and the next minute theyâre not,â the basketball superstar wrote in an essay shortly after 9/11. Tragically his life, too, ended way too soon. The sports legend had no idea when he boarded a helicopter with his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and five other people last week that those were the last few moments of his life. Ironically, Kobe, 41, had taken to using helicopters as a way to spend more time with his family and less time stuck in traffic, but ultimately it cost him all the time he had left in the world: as his chopper headed from Los Angeles to a basketball game west of the city, it hit early-morning fog and ploughed into a hillside, instantly killing everyone on board. As news of the tragedy broke, ripples of grief spread around the world for the man whoâd brought joy to millions and who seemed invincible. Born in 1978 to NBA player Joe Bryant and his wife Pamela, Kobe was named after a type of steak that his parents had seen on a restaurant menu. At age three, he began playing basketball and showed such promise that the Charlotte Hornets drafted him straight out of high school. Days later he was traded to the LA Lakers â becoming, at 18, the youngest player ever to start an NBA game â and for the next 20 seasons rose through the ranks to become one of the most celebrated players of all time. And while he made scoring on the court look easy, he regularly arrived two hours early to practice to hit the gym. After his first season in the NBA,

he even turned down a role in a Spike Lee movie in favour of more practice time. Off court, his life was equally as colourful. In 1999, three years into his skyrocketing career, Kobe met high school student Vanessa Laine while she was working as a background model for a music video. Just six months later they were engaged and in 2001, when Vanessa was 18 and Kobe was 22, they tied the knot. Their first daughter, Natalia, was born in 2003 and that same year Kobe was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 19-yearold hospitality worker in a hotel in Colorado. The charges were later dropped when his accuser refused to testify but Kobe publicly acknowledged, âAlthough I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual ⊠I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.â He ended up settling the subsequent civil suit out of court and his reputation took a hit â but even more painful was the agony he caused his wife. Vanessa appeared alongside
him at a press conference where he admitted cheating on her and told her tearfully, âYouâre my backbone. Youâre a blessing. Youâre a piece of my heart. Youâre the air I breathe and youâre the strongest person I know. Iâm so sorry for having to put you through this and having to put our family through this.â The 1.98m-tall star went on to buy Vanessa an âapology ringâ â an extremely rare eight-carat purple diamond reportedly worth $6 million â and in 2006 they welcomed their second daughter Gianna. By 2011, their relationship was in trouble again. Vanessa filed for divorce citing âirreconcilable differencesâ, but two years later they called the divorce off and in 2016 had their third daughter, Bianka. Then, in June last year, they celebrated the arrival of daughter number four, Capri. Four years ago, as his injuries began to mount, the five-time NBA champ and two-time Olympic gold medal winner, who went by the nickname The Black Mamba, stepped down from the game that had made him both a household name and a multi-millionaire. Friends say he enjoyed retirement as
much as heâd loved playing. He won an Oscar for the animated short film Dear Basketball, opened a sports academy to help athletes improve, oversaw a series of sports fantasy childrenâs books and started a podcast called The Punies to inspire children suffering from self-doubt and anxiety. More than anything, say friends, he revelled in family life with Vanessa, 37, Natalia, 17, Gianna, 13, Bianka, three, and Capri, seven months. The star was delighted when Gianna set her sights on following in his footsteps and becoming a basketball pro. He helped her in every way he could and, on January 26, the dedicated dad was taking his girl to a game when their chopper crashed into the steep, bush-strewn hills of Calabasas. That night, soon after rescue crews confirmed there were no survivors, the Grammy Awards in Hollywood hit a sombre note. Host Alicia Keys, 39, paid tribute to the star, saying, âWeâre all feeling crazy sadness right now because earlier today ⊠Los Angeles, America and the whole wide world lost a hero.â Two days later chat-show
host Ellen DeGeneres paid tribute to the sports hero who was a personal friend and who had died on her 62nd birthday. Dabbing away tears, Ellen said, âLife is short, and itâs fragile, and we donât know how many birthdays we have. So just â you donât have to have a birthday to celebrate, just celebrate life.â Three days after Kobeâs death, Vanessa posted a moving tribute to her beloved husband and daughter, saying, âIâm not sure what our lives hold beyond today.â She thanked the millions of people who showed their support. Friends say she is trying her best to be strong for her three remaining daughters and is taking comfort in Kobeâs love for them all. In his 2018 Oscars speech, the star had gushed, âBeing a father is the thing I am most proud of in this world â itâs my greatest accomplishment,â adding later, âIâve learned so much, but perhaps the most profound thing has been the fierce, unconditional love you have for your children when you become a parent. âIâm blessed to have had that experience four times now and thereâs nothing more powerful in this world.â #

hile all eyes were on lovely Lesina NakhidSchuster when The Bachelorette NZ made its hotly anticipated debut last week, the dating showâs familiar host Art Green was captivated by another beautiful woman. Just moments into the ïŹrst episode, the former Bachelor was surprised to clock eyes on ïŹashback footage showing a beaming, baby-faced Matilda Rice stepping out of the limo. âIt was like being in a time warp,â recalls 31-year-old Art, whose heart skipped a beat as he relived that pivotal moment o of meeting his now wife. âIt was like seeing Mattie for the ïŹrst time all over again; she was so herself in every way â conïŹdent, gorgeous and graceful â it gave m me butterïŹies. Considering all the amazing things that have h happened between us, to think th hat we were just two, young nervous strangers back then co ompletely blows my mind.â Indeed, since ïŹnding love on the reality showâs debut se eason back in 2015 there have been countless highs for the couple, who purchased their ïŹrst home and tied the knot before welcoming their adorable baby boy Milo in September last year. With so much happy history behind him, Art says stepping back into the reality TV environment as host on the TVNZ 2 series was an exciting prospect. âSometimes Mattie and I have

It definitely had its highs, but at times it was also lonely and quite emotional, so it was nice to be able to be the support person to Lesina that I wish I couldâve had when I was going through the process. âThe role of host is a lot less stressful,â quips Art, âbut I know first-hand how life-changing the experience can be, so it felt good to be able to share my two cents with Lesina through some of the tougher times.â While Art wonât be drawn on our Bacheloretteâs early favourites, he can say with complete conviction that the Samoan and Trinidadian doctor, 32, is serious about finding love. âYou just have to meet Lesina to know how genuine and caring she really is. After the show wrapped, Art and Matilda, 29, spent quality time showing off their newest addition to friends and family here and in America, where Artâs older sister lives. The holiday couldnât have come soon enough, after an international stint of filming in Argentina kept the proud father away from his baby boy for an entire month.
âI left when Milo was just two months old, so I was away for effectively one third of his life by the time I returned,â says Art. âBefore becoming a father, I could never have predicted how tough that would be. I knew I would miss Mattie immensely, but at the time Milo was just a beautiful little blob who slept and fed a lot. âAbout two weeks in, our little man started smiling and became a lot more alert, which was really tough to miss but Mattie would video call me every day and Iâd savour those moments between filming.â Itâs been five months since Milo â who Art proudly boasts has recently mastered the art of rolling â entered the coupleâs world, and Art says becoming parents has only strengthened their relationship. âI have a newfound love and appreciation for Mattie and her strength and warm nurturing nature as a mother. We canât get enough of this phase of our relationship and are loving life as a family of three.â Reflecting on his good fortune since his time on The Bachelor, Art says, âReturning to The Bachelorette makes me all the more grateful for my experience. I could never have predicted this kind of happiness before signing up, which is why Lesina's journey is just so exciting â because, like me, she could be just moments away from meeting her soulmate." #

From Lebanon (left) to London (right), Sophie has shown she has what it takes to tackle her royal duties successfully.
or almost 20 years, Prince Edwardâs wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex, has quietly and confidently devoted her life to the royal family, dutifully carrying out engagements for the Queen at home and abroad while raising her children away from the harsh glare of the public eye. But now, with senior royal numbers dwindling, the 55-year-old is set to take a starring role â and no-one is happier than the Queen herself, who has always had a soft spot for her youngest sonâs wife. âSophie is a longtime favourite of the Queen and has been singled out as a person the palace would like to help ease the burden,â an insider tells Woman's Day. âSheâs very popular with other senior royals like Prince Charles and Camilla, and has proved to be extremely good at public engagements.â As the royals come to terms with their new reality after the shock exit of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, an expert last week warned theyâre in danger of becoming âseriously understaffedâ. With Prince Harry and Meghan starting their new life in Canada and Prince Andrew stood down over his disastrous friendship with paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, royal author Phil

The only way is Wessex! Sophie and her family (from left) James, Edward and Louise, have long been favourites of the Queen, with the countess also well liked by Charles and Camilla (right).
Dampier said they needed to act decisively to ensure the continuing success of the monarchy. He believed former PR woman Sophie would be the perfect person to take on a greater role. âPrince Philip is retired at 98, the Queen is nearly 94, and Charles and Camilla are in their 70s. Princess Anne will turn 70 in August, and the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra are in their 80s. So who is going to take over the hundreds of patronages?â He insists that as one of the Queenâs most-trusted allies, Sophie â who is mum to Lady Louise Windsor, 16, and James, Viscount Severn, 12 â is destined to become âa star in her own rightâ. Given Edward, who turns 56 next month, is the only one of the Queenâs four children not to divorce, the couple are seen as a safe and reliable pair of hands. âRecently Sophie has been on several overseas trips and done fantastically well,â Phil continues. âNow that her
children are a bit older I think there could be a great role for her to play. I think she wants to do more and would happily step up to the plate and take over more duties if asked. âCharles has to realise that you can slim down too much, and they are running out of royals to do the nittygritty work. Sophie would be perfect to take up some of the slack and I think she has the potential to be a royal superstar given the chance.â Itâs almost two decades since the countess was embroiled in the now-infamous âfake sheikâ scandal, where she was lured to a meeting under the pretence of securing a lucrative PR contract. In the secretly recorded tapes that resulted, the royal criticised then-Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie. Immediately stepping down from the communications ïŹrm she founded, Sophie released a statement apologising for misjudgement, and insiders say from then on she has devoted her life to serving the monarchy.
âFrom that moment, she focused only on her family, her royal duty and the causes sheâs passionate about. She vowed never to put herself in a situation where she could be manipulated like that ever again.â She and the Queen have a close relationship â with Sophie explaining in 2015 that living at the royal residence of Bagshot Park in Surrey, close to Windsor Castle, meant her children see a lot of their grandmother. âWe are a lot more fortunate because we live so much closer to the Queen, so when she spends a lot of time at Windsor, our children are more fortunate because they can go out and have tea with her on a regular basis. And Louise goes over there riding, so she sees quite a lot of us.â And the fact that Sophie is often seen sitting beside the Queen in her Rolls-Royce on their way to church is yet another sign of the monarchâs affection for her.
A former royal equerry said, âIf Sophie is staying at Sandringham, then you can pretty much guarantee the Queen will ask her â usually last thing on a Saturday night â if she would like âa liftâ to the church. âAnd the same happens at Balmoral. The Queen likes to be completely calm before church and she ïŹnds Sophieâs presence soothing.â If she does indeed step up into a more prominent role, thereâs no doubt sheâll bring a dash of glamour with her. Lauded for her impeccable style, Sophie has a fondness for soft hues, ïŹoral prints and matching millinery. Like the Duchess of Cambridge, UK-based Kiwi designer Emilia Wickstead is said to be her all-time favourite. Says our source, âSophie loves fashion and unlike some of the other younger royals, sheâs never relied on a stylist to dress her. She has a great eye and never puts a foot wrong.â #

But for this couple â who shot to fame in 2018 with their hit television series The Casketeers â love, laughter and happiness are never far away. THE CASKETEERSâ and was just so, so beautiful.â Both in relationships with other people, their feelings were put on hold but eventually circumstances changed and by August they were a couple. Then, four months later, Kaiora discovered she was pregnant. âMy ïŹrst thought was that I would have to get work and the second thing was facing her mother and family,â recalls Francis. âBut I didnât want to hide because I really was in deep love.â It was a complicated situation for the two lovebirds. While theyâd both grown up in similar circumstances in Northland, Francis came from a Catholic background while Kaioraâs family is Mormon. âYou know those missionary boys that go around?â jokes Francis. âWell, her mum probably wanted her to marry one of those boys!â Things, however, soon settled down and the couple moved to Kaitaia to live with Kaioraâs mum, although she insisted they sleep in separate bedrooms, in single beds, until they said âI doâ. The doting duo tied the knot quietly in 2005, at the Kaitaia Courthouse, in front of 12 people, with ïŹve-months-pregnant Kaiora wearing a dress borrowed from her sister. Francis, who is also father to Haimona, 18, from a previous relationship, tells, âWe didnât have any rings and one of our good friends took hers off and gave it to me to give to Kaiora. And then we went down to the local Chinese takeaway to celebrate.â For a couple whose lives are dedicated to ceremony, Francis
says he regrets the event was so low-key to this day. âI have considered redoing our vows, but itâs just one of those things,â shrugs Francis, who lost 43kg after undergoing gastric sleeve surgery in 2018. But Kaiora looks back on their wedding day with fondness. âI donât regret how we did it â it was so simple and we had the important people there.â Since then, the pair have had their share of ups and downs. Theyâve welcomed sons Nikora, 14, Moronai, 12, Mikae, six, Mihaka, ïŹve, and Francis, one, to the world. In between, theyâve lost family members, moved to Auckland, opened two funeral homes, launched successful television careers and even penned a book, Life as a Casketeer, which was released this month. The humble sweethearts also faced challenging times last year when Kaiora developed post-natal depression following the birth of Francis Jr. Unhappy with how her body felt post-partum, the young mum was also balancing ïŹve children, a husband and a business, as well as coping with media attention from the third series of The Casketeers and the showâs launch on NetïŹix. Kaiora also found herself dealing with some negative feedback on social media. It was a perfect storm for the 36-year-old who says there was âa lot of cryingâ and bickering with her husband. The change in his wife was confusing to Francis as it was completely out of character. Desperate for answers, he searched on Google. It led him
to Healthline, which offers free advice and information, and after speaking to a qualiïŹed nurse, Francis realised he needed to take his beloved wife to see their GP. Once they had a diagnosis, they were able to put in place a plan to help. Kaiora realised she needed to take time out for herselff and for her that meant doing things like getting her nails and eyelashes done. âAnd foot massages,â Francis adds with a grin. âWhen she gets her feet massaged, the whole house is happy!â The healing process also involved having counselling sessions together, which Francis says âwas like a light bulb had turned onâ. He adds, âThere was this denial about depression, that this doesnât happen to us. But it does. We get the ïŹu, kids get chickenpox and we get depression. It is what it is.â It is these kinds of experiences, says the couple, that help them in their careers as funeral directors. âWhen you arrange a funeral, itâs not just a dead body; there are all these other dynamics â relationships, people who are estranged, money issues, siblingsâ issues and we can say we have been there and done that,â says Francis philosophically. After 16 years together their love is stronger than ever. While they laugh at the idea of ïŹnding time alone,
The sweethearts still have the look of devotion. they do manage a lunch away from their work on the odd occasion. âWe say âcheersâ with our Fanta when we realise weâve had a little date,â laughs Kaiora. âNothing has changed since I met him. I still love him. In fact, I think I love him more.â #

Howâs life back in LA since leaving the Iâm a Celeb jungle? I made some great friends on the show, but it was good to get home. Kendall and Kylie put up some welcome home balloons for me. Then a few weeks later it was Christmas, so I caught up with everyone then.
Did you mind that none of your family were there to meet you after you left the jungle?
I never asked anyone and I didnât expect my family to come down. I heard there was a backlash, but my kids are all working and doing great.
Which of your children do you see the most?
I see more of Kendall and Kylie than anyone, and then I see the Jenner side of the family all the time.
Theyâve done so incredibly well. Do they get their drive from you?
Theyâve all done so well, it seems like I was just changing Kylieâs diapers! Some of their drive is from me but I have to give a lot of credit to Kris. Sheâs incredibly smart. I remember years ago, when Kim told me she was scared of doing her first lines to camera, I told her that she should be taking risks in life and putting herself out there, as thatâs how you grow. All the kids have taken that up.
How often do you see Kim and her husband Kanye West? I saw them during the Christmas holidays. I talk to Kanye and I love what heâs doing right now. Kanyeâs a great guy, we get along very well. Heâs got a good soul. Heâs smart, creative and kind.
Kimâs training to be a lawyer, which some people have raised an eyebrow at. Is it frustrating to you that people donât think sheâs capable of achieving it?
Thatâs exactly why sheâll do it! Sheâs working very hard. Her father Robert was a lawyer and thatâs always been at the back of her mind. She got involved with prison reform and that inspired her. Now
she does home school for three or four days a week for three hours a day. She says itâll take a little longer â probably five years â but sheâs told me she wants to start her own law firm and work on prison reform and try to hire as many former inmates [whoâve studied law], to help the prison system. Kimâs an amazing human being. I have so much respect for her and what sheâs done. Sheâs stayed relevant for the entire time sheâs been in the public eye. Sheâs built a family, she and Kanye have been together for a long time and sheâs got her businesses.
Sophia addressed your relationship last month and said you were "never romantically involved". Is that right?
Iâm very fortunate to have a great friend in Sophia. We have a wonderful life and we do everything together. Everybody needs those people in their lives. She has her life and I have mine. We live here and we support each other. Itâs a great friendship.

To be honest with you, I donât see myself having any relationships with anybody in the future. Itâs not what Iâm looking for. Iâve got so many other things in my life. On a scale of one to 10, thatâs a one. Iâve been married three times. Iâve been down that road. Iâm 70, I want to enjoy my life and I have great friends. I donât even think about it.

Womanâs Day
I feel different as I lived my whole life with secrets and my life was so complicated. But today I just wake up in the morning and Iâm myself all day. I mean, it does take me longer to get ready [laughs], but lifeâs so much simpler. I have a mission and a cause, which I never had before, and I try to make change in the world. Now I have that platform. Itâs never easy, but you work at it.
What do you see when you look in the mirror?
When I wake up in the morning and I see myself, when Iâm walking by, I think, âHey that works. I look pretty good!â
How did you used to feel when you looked in the mirror before you transitioned? It just never seemed right. Peopleâs perception of me, because of my athletic background, and my personal perception were two different things. The morning after my
â
win at the Olympic Games [Caitlyn, then Bruce Jenner, won gold in the menâs decathlon in the 1976 Games] I went into the bathroom â I didnât have a stitch of clothing on â and I put the medal on. There was a full-length mirror and I looked into it and thought, âOh my God. Did I just build up Bruce so big that Iâm stuck with him for the rest of my life?â That image of the Olympic champion, of male dominance, really wasnât me. I got sick and tired of being identified by the 48 hours I was inside that stadium. My story got so much better after I transitioned and lived my life authentically. I feel the story of equality, and the struggle I went through, is so much more interesting than the Games.
You must feel an overwhelming sense of contentment now âŠ
Yes. People are learning that
gender is much more fluid than they thought it was. Because of people being more open, this issue comes forward at a much younger age. I like that people can be identified and accepted â depending on their circumstances â at a younger age so they can move on with their lives. Certainly, in the community, we have tremendous challenges with murder rates, prostitution and suicide, but Iâve also met so many people who have transitioned and are living their authentic life and have prospered now.
What would you say to your younger self?
Honestly, I wouldnât change a thing. Yes, there were a lot of struggles â the â80s were the worst. I lived in a house for six years in my 30s and isolated myself from the world. I was going to try and transition before I was 40, but I got to 39 and couldnât

do it. It wasnât time for me personally or in society. Then, five months later, after Iâd decided I had to get back into life, I met Kris and we were together for 23 years, raised a great family and had two more kids. I donât regret any of that.
Which of your daughters gives the best fashion advice?
I want to wear fun, young stuff, but in reality, Iâm 70 and I have to be age appropriate. I struggle with that. The person I went to most, especially at the beginning, was Kim. What she wears is what becomes fashion. Sheâs a trendsetter, so Iâve always appreciated her advice. Between her, Kendall and Kylie, itâs covered.
Well, you look very glam âŠ
It does take a bit of work but dressing up is a lot of fun. I practised for 50 years and I learnt all this stuff a long time ago, so Iâve been doing it for a long time. I do have hair extensions, but at the age of
65, I was blessed that I had enough hair on my head left to tie an extension onto it!
You have an impressive wardrobe. How many pairs of shoes do you own?
That fit me? [Laughs]. Shoes are a tough deal for me. Iâm a size 13 so I canât buy them off the rack. The ones I have were made for me and theyâre pretty expensive, so I donât have a lot. I have about 20 or 30 pairs.
Do you have Botox or fillers?
Yes, all my life Iâve watched what my ex-wives were doing for night creams and for this and that, and I do all of that now. I take care of my skin, I wear my sunblock. Iâm fortunate at the age of 70 that I look OK. I always thought, âI donât want to be an old chick!â I wanted to be younger, but I found out old chicks can still be cool. Lifeâs not over. Iâm very fortunate to be in the position Iâm in and I understand that Iâm
privileged. Iâve had male privilege, celebrity privilege, white privilege. Iâve had all these privileges and I get that a lot of people donât have those types of things, but I try and use those things for good. When I transitioned, because of my celebrity status, I was treated very differently. I try and take that platform and use it for the community. A few years back, I started a foundation to raise money for trans organisations. In the future, Iâd like to start a scholarship programme for trans youths too.
When the news about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex moving away from royal life broke, there were reports comparing them to Kylie and Kim in terms of the money they could make. Is the comparison a compliment?
Itâs very much a compliment to the family. I donât know much about that situation, but Iâm sure if they were free to do what they wanted, they could probably do a lot, but itâs complicated â and I think my familyâs tough!
Can you understand what Meghan is going through, wanting to escape?
I donât know her but living in the public eye can be difficult. Every day youâre open to fake news and other people defining who you are when itâs really not you.
You once said youâve never felt feminine but always felt female. Whatâs your take on it now?
Little Bruce was living in here for 65 years, so Iâve had to grow into my femininity. Itâs a work in progress and every year I feel more feminine. I will never be totally feminine. Why? Because little Bruce still lives inside me. When I transitioned, I thought Bruce had pretty much done everything he could do in his life, so letâs give Caitlyn a chance. Caitlyn comes out and lives her life but little Bruce is still there. At the start I thought, âI canât do all the things I did before,â but thatâs a bunch of baloney. Bruce used to race cars and girls can race cars, so I thought, âLetâs go to the race track!â Iâve got back into flying planes as well. I got myself another plane and I fly myself everywhere now. Women can do anything they want! #

wenty years after their Kiwi fans rallied together to launch a nationwide petition to bring the Backstreet Boys to New Zealand, the boy band is gearing up for two nostalgiafilled shows in Auckland. And while theyâve still got many of the same hits and moves, much has changed for the quintet, who are now all doting dads whose bottle service these days is more likely to involve baby formula than vodka. Womanâs Day caught up with Brian Littrell about how New Zealand reminds him of home, the groupâs resurgence, fatherhood and watching his 17-year-old son Baylee follow
ackstreetâs back!
SONâS GONNA IGGER THAN ME his footsteps into music with the release of his debut album 777-Country. Having witnessed his bandmates Nick Carter and AJ McLean experience the downsides of fame with drug and alcohol addiction when they were around the same age as Baylee, Brian is conscious of helping his son stay on the right path as his career takes off. âThe best thing we can give Baylee is love and support, and just guide his thought process,â says Brian, who met his wife Leighanne on the groupâs 1997 âAs Long as You Love Meâ video shoot. âWith success comes fortune and fame, and thatâs when young people can lose their heads. Everybody around you says âyesâ to everything you want and you lose perspective. âWhen AJ and Nick were growing up, it was tough for me to watch them disconnect from their families. Success sometimes tears families apart. Having seen that and knowing the things Iâve been
through with my group, the best thing we can do with Baylee is hold him close and stay strong as a family so we can help each other through the ups and downs that may come with success.â The Backstreet Boys have ridden those ups and downs for almost 27 years, overcoming health struggles, loss, addiction, conflicts and legal troubles. Now all happy and healthy family men, the group has experienced a resurgence in recent years, starting with a record-breaking Las Vegas residency, then the release of their 10th studio album, DNA, which shot to number one and spawned the Grammynominated track âDonât Go Breaking My Heartâ. âWeâre honoured to still have people who want to listen to us and come see the shows,â gushes Brian, 44. âThis is something weâve worked very hard for. We never stopped and always talked about having a long career. Itâs not that difficult to have quick
success in this business, but itâs difficult to have longevity. âAnd when youâre dealing with record labels and having success, they want you to record, record, record, put out music, then tour, tour, tour. Sometimes you have to stop and say, âIf this is going to mean as much to us as it always has, we have to step away for a minute and do something different.ââ For the group, that meant heading to Las Vegas for their Larger than Life residency. They also explored the country realm, releasing âGod, Your Mama, and Meâ, with Florida Georgia Line, which is what inspired Bayleeâs musical dreams. Brian was hands-on with his sonâs project and even has a duet with Baylee, âCome Kiss Meâ on the record. âWe didnât want to do just any song together,â explains Baylee. âWe wanted something that would have a big outreach to people and this is a love song that people

can have their first dance to or play at weddings. âRecording with my dad was really fun. We were laughing at each other because we kept running in and out of the studio wanting to retake each line!â While Baylee promotes his record, Brian is enjoying downtime before resuming the DNA World Tour, which will see them rocking hits like âI Want it That Wayâ at Aucklandâs Spark Arena on May 16 and 17. In their downtime, Brian hopes to sightsee. âI love New Zealand,â he enthuses. âItâs absolutely beautiful. Itâs a long way from home, but itâs amazing to travel to all these beautiful places. âHopefully I'll get a chance to run around Auckland and maybe Christchurch. I just love the countryside. It reminds me a lot of home where I grew up in Kentucky. Itâs a long way from Kentucky, but it reminds me of being a little boy at home there!â #

s her mum lifts little Aria into the air, a gorgeous smile lights up her face. Itâs hard to believe that a few weeks ago this sweet tot with blonde pigtails and a cheeky grin, and 29-year-old RenĂ©e Annan, were both pinned underneath a driverless runaway bus that had careened down a busy central Auckland street. Whatâs even more remarkable is not only did mother and daughter survive the terrifying ordeal on January 13, but the West Auckland tot miraculously escaped with little more than a few cuts and grazes. out of a horror flick, the pair disappeared underneath the enormous people mover, shocking distraught onlookers who feared the mum and her toddler were dead. Resting at her Titirangi home after a spell in hospital, a grateful RenĂ©e says sheâs still stunned they are alive to tell their story, and are convinced an angelic
intervention spared them from tragedy. Says RenĂ©e, who works for Rape Prevention Education, âI try not to do the âwhat ifsâ because itâs a rabbit hole, but it is just so miraculous if you think about it. âWe didnât go under a wheel â the bus was stopped by that light pole and it didnât drag me further. And when I think about Aria being left behind in one spot and me being dragged, itâs just so lucky. Iâm not religious but itâs kind of like angels were looking out for us.â Adds Ariaâs papa James, 33, who co-parents the 23month-old, âAll my family say our mum was with her. Iâve prayed to her in the past and asked her to look over my daughter while Iâm not there. I reckon she was with her.â âShe was the angel,â agrees a relieved RenĂ©e. The mother-of-one is still nursing road rash wounds on her arms from where she was dragged 20 metres beneath the out-of-control tourist bus. She recalls everything happening so fast â within a split second â meaning there was little time to escape. âMy dad, Aria and I went on her first trip on a double decker bus from New Lynn to town,â explains RenĂ©e. âWe went up to SkyCity for lunch and were walking down the street to catch the bus home. Aria was walking next to me, holding my hand, and I was pushing the pram. âI heard yelling and saw the bus coming down and thought, âItâs reversingâ, and then I saw it was going kind of fast and I started running. I was trying to pull and pick Aria up at the same time, but then it hit us and there was nothing I could do. âIt felt really hot and I felt
we were both being crushed. Our hands were ripped apart and I was sure that we were both dead. And then I was like, âIâm not deadâ, and then I was sure she was dead. That was the worst minute of my life,â she tells, reaching for a tissue. Amazingly, when RenĂ©e managed to get out from under the bus, she discovered Aria alive, sitting in the arms of a road worker. âI believe she just stayed in one spot and the bus went over her because she had no serious injuries,â says RenĂ©e. âWe were quite far apart at the end and I couldnât see her. The guys who pulled her out could hear her crying and they looked under, and she crawled towards them. Luckily we were both in the middle of the bus, not under the wheels.â Apart from grazes and bruises and a small bump on her head, little Aria escaped unscathed and was discharged from Starship Childrenâs Hospital within hours. Her devoted papa recounts the emotional moment he entered the hospitalâs emergency department, fearing the worst. âI walked into the hospital expecting to see Aria hurt â and there she was riding around on a toy ride-on tractor!â he laughs. âI asked, âIs that the same girl thatâs been hit by a bus?â I was like, it canât be Aria. She saw me and said âPapaâ. âWhen I picked her up, thatâs when she told me her story: âPapa, sore, sore Mamma, busâ, recounting the totâs heart-wrenching sentence. âThat just broke me,â he shares with tear-filled eyes. âIn the hospital sheâd talk about the bus in her own way

Come back to us Papa! LOVE CONQUERS POKIES & P ADDICTION
I
How the lost dad found his way back to whanau
t was love at first sight when Elise Niu saw her husband Ray step out of the car at a touch rugby camp 18 years ago. She announced then and there, âIâm going to marry that guy and have his babies.â Four children and two weddings later, the couple are still head over heels, juggling family life with a successful gym on the Kapiti Coast. But theyâve overcome challenges that would have destroyed many other couples. âOur experience has proven you can get through anything with love,â shares Elise, 35, who supported her hubby through a gambling habit and helped him end a nightmare methamphetamine addiction. âI have so much love for Ray and know how much he loves me, even though he didnât always show it.â The couple had their first
date at a pub in Palmerston North in 2002 and Elise beams, âAs soon as we saw each other, we were inseparable. We hugged like weâd been together forever and it was instant.â Ray, 37, had been living in Australia and decided to stay in New Zealand for his new romance. Two years later they moved to Sydney, where he picked up work at an oil refinery company. But soon he started gambling. Softly-spoken Ray admits, âI was 18 the first time and put $2 in a pokie machine, winning hundreds of dollars, which sparked something.â When his friends in Australia started gambling on weekends, Ray joined in. Within three months of getting a credit card, Ray had secretly racked up $30,000 in debt. âSome mornings Ray got dressed in his work clothes

but caught a train to another suburb to sit on the pokies all day,â tells Elise, who eventually found credit card statements. âI was heartbroken. I felt like I was dealing with someone I didnât know.â Then the couple learnt they were expecting their first child. âIt never crossed my mind to leave Ray â we were in it together,â insists Elise, who gave birth to their eldest son Cavalli, now 12. âI figured the gambling was one stupid mistake and heâd learn and become a better person.â When Cavalli was seven months old, Elise returned to Aotearoa to stay with her mum, while Ray worked in Sydney to pay off the credit card. After three months they were debt-free and Elise returned to be with her love. They married in September 2009, welcoming their second son Koda, now nine, followed by Raven, six. Things were going well until early 2015, when Elise started noticing changes in her hubby. She explains, âRay had an aggressiveness that wasnât normal for him, there was a lot of secrecy and he didnât sleep much. He lost weight and said it was from taking a pre-workout supplement. But my husband was someone I didnât recognise. His whole demeanour and loving goodness were nowhere to be seen.â Rayâs drug use was a way of masking the demons he was battling. He admits,âIâd have unwanted thoughts and then smoke some ice [known as P in NZ] and forget about everything. But then I couldnât stop.â Elise came face to face with the devastating truth in

late 2015. After a particularly bad fight, the worried mum checked Rayâs pockets while he slept and pulled out a bag of meth and a pipe. âI freaked out and just felt sick,â she admits. âI went into the bedroom and buried my head in my hands, shaking.â Then she heard a voice. âIt came into my head and heart and said, âChange your reaction,ââ recalls Elise. âIt said to react with love and not anger, and everything would be OK.â So she wrote a note and put it in Rayâs bag. It read: âPlease come back to us Papa, we miss you.â She wrapped her arms around her sleeping husband and told him, âYouâre a good husband and father, I love you and everythingâs going to be OK. Iâm going to stand by you right until the end.â Moments later Ray woke and turned to Elise and said, âI need to tell you something.â It was the beginning of a hard road to recovery for the determined dad, who moved with his young family back to NZ. Around the same time, the couple learnt they were pregnant with their little girl Quincy, now three. After an agonising 18 months, Ray qualified as a

The tiler had casually chatted to a few women on the dating app, but they werenĂą€™t like Tendy Cooper. Joe was attracted to the solo mumĂą€™s independence and drive, and the fact she was as happy single as she was ready to commit. But he hadnĂą€™t expected to be hit with a bombshell about her past on their ÄĆč rst date. Tendy Ăą€“ named Tender-Joy at birth Ăą€“ was born in Gloriavale. If anything I was more interested in hearing the story behind it because all I knew was what Iâd seen on TV.â Tendy told her curious date that although she was born in the West Coast religious community, she left at age three. Her father Phil Cooper â son of Gloriavale founder Neville Cooper, aka Hopeful Christian â escaped with his wife Prayer and their five children. They later had another son and daughter. âWhen I met Joe I wanted to be upfront from day dot because you either accept it or you donât,â says the graphic designer, 33, whose mum returned to the commune when she was a kid, and lives there now with Tendyâs eldest and youngest sisters.
Above: Prayer with four-year-old Tendy, her sister Dawn and baby brother Andreas.
âI hit gold,â says smitten Joe. Left: Tendy and Joe with daughters Tayah (front) and Zara.
âWhoever my partner would be had to accept that part of my life, since I still have a lot of connections to Gloriavale and visit my family there.â Tendyâs hunter-fisherman beau was the first date she told about her unique birthplace, which her father took her out of during an intricate escape plan. âThatâs the best part of the story!â Joe enthuses. âHer dad distracted the leaders with the help of his brother and cut off all the power in the community. Then they jumped the fence and escaped into the dark night.â Phil, one of 16 siblings, never returned to the strict confines of his childhood home. Tendyâs mother tried to adjust to life on the outside three times, but she kept returning, eventually settling in Gloriavale for good and giving birth to their youngest daughter there. âDad was a businessman
and so he was let out to deal with other business people, which allowed him to experience the freedoms of the world,â explains Tendy, who has daughters Zara, eight, from a previous relationship, and Tayah, two. âHe decided he wanted us kids to have a choice, but my mum kept going back. I vaguely remember staying at a house somewhere in Canterbury, being looked after by someone while my dad was away, and my mum and a van full of women came and collected us.â The last time Tendy lived with both parents was in 1990 when they moved to America and into Woodcrest, in New York State. Itâs a community similar to Gloriavale, but with more freedom and access to the outside world. Tendy experienced celebrations like birthdays, Christmas and Halloween for the first time, and smiles, âI have my happiest childhood memories there.â But when Prayer returned to Aotearoa on her own, it
was the last time Tendy saw her mother until she was 16. âMy youngest brother was nine months old and I didnât know Mum was never going to come back,â she recalls. âAs a mother myself now, thereâs nothing in this world that could stop me from being with my kids. I always longed for a motherâs love and wanted answers.â Tendy was living in Australia with her dad when she decided to return to Gloriavale as a teenager. âAt that age youâre discovering yourself, and I couldnât understand why my mum chose to live without us, so I wanted to ask her,â shares Tendy. âI went in and got to spend time with her and my sisters, and got closure. Mum truly believes because we were young and didnât get a choice in leaving, our souls were saved because she went back. In her heart, going back meant her children will go to heaven. She does love me and always has.â Although Prayer begged her to stay, Tendy returned to Australia. At 25, she

She explains, Ăą€œLike any female, I wanted to share with my mum that I was a mother. Before I had Zara, theyĂą€™d asked if I wanted to go to Gloriavale to have the baby, but I said, Ăą€˜No, I want to go to hospital and have painkillers!Ăą€™Ăą€? A few years later, Tendy met Joe online. Ăą€œHaving a child, I obviously wasnĂą€™t looking for a ÄĆč‚ing Ăą€“ I was looking for someone to spend my life with and I was very selective,Ăą€? she says. The couple werenĂą€™t told to wear traditional Gloriavale attire during their overnight stay in the community, but Joe admits heĂą€™d have obliged, saying, Ăą€œIt mightĂą€™ve been better because we walked around in normal clothes and all the families looked at us. Since young kids are taught that outsiders are evil, theyĂą€™d run and hide behind their parents.Ăą€? When the pair took a dip in GloriavaleĂą€™s pool, they were blocked off from members of the community. Ăą€œI was only in shorts and Tendy had a bikini, but youĂą€™re not allowed to show skin in there,Ăą€? he says. Ăą€œI went for a tiki tour and found one of the gowns the women swim in and a thin Lycra jumpsuit the men wear. I
brought them out and we got dressed up in them.Ăą€? The couple visited again when their daughter Tayah was born. Tendy is the only one of PrayerĂą€™s children living on the outside to have regular visits, and she feels lucky to have JoeĂą€™s support. Ăą€œI love that he can be in any situation and handle himself, because my familyĂą€™s complicated,Ăą€? she admits. Ăą€œBut JoeĂą€™s open and always holds his own. IĂą€™m also very attracted to his adventurous spirit, and that he always has something fun to do with the girls and me.Ăą€? Joe says part of their compatibility is a shared passion for the outdoors and exploring. Ăą€œTendyĂą€™s the driving force behind our family and thatĂą€™s one thing I love about her,Ăą€? he says. A month before their Kiwi wedding in March 2008, Jay moved to Aotearoa. After three-and-a-half years trying for children, the delighted pair ïŹnally welcomed baby daughter Audrey last January. âYour love story is your own,â declares Alex. âIf that involves meeting in a chatroom from different sides of the world, so what?!â
My bestie picked MY HUSBAND FOR ME!
A dating site proved to be spot on
W
hen a woman matched with Nelson-born comedian Ben Caldwell on a dating site seven years ago, it wasnât because she wanted romance. Instead, she suggested he meet her friend Amberly! âShe picked up that Ben was really similar to me and he ticked a few boxes on my dream-man list, recalls Masterton-born Amberly, 29, a comedienne. âHe was ginger, funny and
most importantly, he likes Billy Connolly.â She joined the website to check out her potential match. âI hadnât been interested in dating before that because my children were my only focus,â tells Amberly. âBut I realised really quickly how kind, caring and giving Ben is.â The devoted mum had three young kids in her care, having taken over their custody from a family member. Amberly made sure Ben knew that if they dated, she came as a full package. âIt didnât worry me,â says Ben, 32, who works in customer service. âThere wasnât a day we werenât in contact by text, messenger or phone call, but I didnât think
it would lead to where we are now so fast.â Amberlyâs children were equally smitten. âThey embraced Ben full force and the oldest said âI love youâ to him before I did!â she tells. âThey made the natural progression to calling him Dad occasionally, which became a permanent thing when I got pregnant with our eldest biological child.â The couple had three babies together after tying the knot in 2016, and while they say life is busy and chaotic, they agree it makes for great comedy-show content. âWeâve had setbacks, but we try to ïŹnd the positives in it all and something to laugh about,â says Amberly.

Get date-night ready and show your face some love AU NATUREL
Fresh and glowy is the way to go these days, so move away from heavy foundations and opt for luminous natural ïŹnishes. If lighter coverage seems too daunting, choose a formula thatâs buildable, or use a concealer blended sparingly over problem areas. When applied in thin layers onto well-hydrated skin, foundations and concealers are much less likely to settle into lines.

TIME TO GLOW
Nothing says date night like a fresh, radiant complexion and there are plenty of new ways to get the look. Liquids are great to illuminate from underneath foundation, while pressed powders can be brushed over the face to add instant warmth. And always remember blush! Itâs a failsafe way to add a youthful look.

LIGHT UP YOUR EYES
We all love our neutrals, but a pretty hint of coral or pink is a subtle way to add
colour to your date look. Picking up a complete new-season palette gives you an advantage, as shades are put together to achieve a cohesive look with a mix of ïŹnshes. Try bufïŹng a matte or satin shade into the crease of your eye, then add the coordinating shimmer onto the middle of your eyelid to brighten things up. Donât forget a well-groomed brow to ïŹnish!

Sometimes mascara just doesnât cut it when you want length, but false lashes can seem a little over the top. Hereâs where half sets, accent sets or individual lashes come in handy â theyâre more natural-looking and much easier to apply. With any long-term relationship there will be ups and downs, but empathy, compassion and forgiveness go a long way towards sticking together when the sea gets a little rough. Forgiveness isnât about being OK with whatâs happened, but choosing to move forward.

After the fun-ïŹlled ïŹrst few months, that little thing called routine creeps in and romance can slide away. But saying âI love youâ is just as important 50 years down the track as it was in the beginning. Ask yourself when was the last time you told your partner what they mean to you. Do you still speak kindly and politely to your other half? Have you left a handwritten note or small gift lately? Make sure you donât let the little things slide!

Iâm going to be alone on Valentineâs Day, again. Should I make an effort and go out on a date? And if so, is doing an online proïŹle safe? â Weary Heart, Auckland
Q
I wouldnât use Valentineâs Day as the kick-off to an online date evening myself, but thatâs not to say that you canât use the date to make an anniversary of a new beginning. Is it possible to meet the right person for you on the internet? Of course! Will it be easy? No! What site you use should be dependent on your expectations, but nothing should be more important than managing your safety. If you do register on a site, make sure you tell somebody where youâre going and who youâre going with. Donât meet at somebodyâs home, avoid being alone with somebody, and make it a public space. Donât give out personal information about where you live, etc. Donât be afraid to stay home by yourself and get a takeaway and watch a rom-com, or even better, go out with a friend for the night. Not all love celebrations have to be romantic.

Fiji
With a ïŹight time of three hours, Kiwis have always loved heading to Fiji, whether itâs for family fun or romance. The demand for hotels and ïŹights increased 55% between 2018 and 2019, according to Expedia. If youâre looking to have a really special experience, ïŹy on a Fiji Airwaysâ new A350 to Nadi and catch an Island Hoppersâ chopper to amazing Vomo Island. Kiwi pilot Steve is originally from near Waitomo and his previous job was cattle mustering in Western Australia. Vomo is not an adults-only island (it has a great kidsâ club), but it has a fantastic adults-only bar, restaurant and pool area called The Rocks. Its executive chef Michael Fosbender is from Christchurch, and his food is some of the best youâre ever likely to taste, especially in a resort. Itâs a special treat and youâll need to save up or win Lotto to stay here, but you wonât regret it for a moment â especially as you relax with a coupleâs massage at Vomoâs Kui Spa.

Aitutaki
Love the Cook Islands but never travelled beyond
Rarotonga? The island of Aitutaki is a 50-minute ïŹight from Raro and is so beautiful â and relaxed â that romance is a natural by-product of spending time there. PaciïŹc Resort Aitutaki is ïŹve-star accommodation with gorgeous, private beachside bures. The staff will even set up a romantic private dinner for you on the beach, complete with candles, scattered ïŹowers and a billowing white canopy. Another option is the picturesque adults-only Aitutaki Lagoon Private Island Resort, which has direct access to the lagoon.
3
Rome
Known as the Eternal City, Rome is a spectacular place to wander around on romantic walks, provided you donât get too caught up in the tourist hordes near the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps. Besides its breathtaking ancient buildings and ruins, Rome is a vibrant city full of modern-day Romans who are proud of their home and its heritage. For a fab dinner away from touristy restaurants, head to the formerly blue-collar now edgy neighbourhood Testaccio, and for a place to stay, try the cool bohemian area of Trastevere. Itâs an easy walk to the major tourist hubs, but without the crowds.
4
Paris
No list of romantic places is complete without the City
of Light. Its boulevards, famous sites and just, well, Frenchness, make it a heady place to spend time. Like many popular tourist hotspots, the crowds can feel overwhelming, but there are lots of quiet and chic little spots to escape to â check out the Le Marais district. Just donât wear date-night heels as you try to enjoy a romantic stroll along the uneven surfaces of the cobbled streets!
5
Raglan
This West Coast surïŹe hub is just two hoursâ drive south of Auckland. Raglan Rural Retreat Luxury Camping is a 10-minute drive from town and can be booked via Airbnb. Youâre in the countryside, complete with neighbouring llamas and ducks, but thereâs great coffee a short walk down the road at Te Uku Roast OfïŹce, housed, as you might guess, in a former post ofïŹce. The retreat has two glamping tents to choose from â each with its own spa pool and ïŹre pit. Itâs a charming spot and youâll enjoy the friendly but unobtrusive Kiwi hospitality of hosts Brenda and Bruce. In Raglan itself thereâs a multitude of great places to eat â sit outside on bean bags under a shade tent and savour the delicious fare at Aroha Sushi, followed by an ice cream or drink at Georgeâs Beach Club.

A date with Sarah-Kate
W
ROYALLY RUDE Sarah-Kate has some more advice for Harry
ith every man and his dog weighing in on Megxit, thereâs absolutely no need to add my opinion to the pile â but Iâm going to anyway. Last year I dispensed what I thought was some very sensible advice to Harry on the off chance he happened to pick up a copy of Womanâs Day at the dentist or similar. âIf you donât need the carriages, castles and palaces,â I said, âthen I donât believe anyone would blame you for carving out a different future for your family.â In the absence of his lovely mum, I suggested that given his privilege, the only thing he shouldnât do is whinge. âThe world is more of an oyster for you than it is for
most of us, H, so put your thinking cap on, work out a way to make the most of it, and weâll be behind you all the way,â I promised. Given the events of the past weeks, it would appear H ignored my words of wisdom. I think perhaps Meghan packed his thinking cap when they went to stay in their multimillion-dollar hideaway on Vancouver Island. I admit thinking caps are tricky things. The Ginger lost his in the â90s and now has to borrow mine, which is a pain in the jacksie but still, the thought is there in the end and as everyone knows, itâs the thought that counts. I take no issue with what Harry has done â his future should be of his own making â but the way he has done it leaves a lot to be desired.
His granny had a horribilis enough annus last year, what with rumours ïŹying thick and fast about rifts between Harry and Wills, Kate and Meghan and then â donât get me started on Prince Andrew. So for Harry to sweep back in to the UK and drop his bombshell with what seems like little warning and more than a few ultimatums while Meghan jets back to Canada and baby Archie â thatâs unfair. And with Prince Philip just out of hospital? Shame on you, H. I understand the royal gingerâs mental health may be suffering, but he does have more than a few people around him who could help him. His father and Camilla, to name but a few. Heck, if I was Harry, Iâd be knocking on Princess Anneâs
door. How has she done it all these years? The hardest working royal of them all more than does her duty to the Queen yet still manages to maintain a private lifestyle and a happy family. Of course her advice may be more brutal than mine. Something more along the lines of: âPull your head in, sunshine.â I donât want to blame Meghan for the rift in the royals. Happy wife, happy life, as the saying goes. But Canada? How will George and Charlotte and Louis go âabootâ spending time with their cousin if heâs busy dodging icicles in The Great White North? Yes, we all love our partners, but we have our families for longer. I hope Harry ïŹnds his thinking cap and uses it.
Kateâs home truths TH
ISSUE
I
must be getting old. I have noticed a shift in the way I view love. When youâre young, itâs easy to confuse love with infatuation; itâs easy to say youâll love âtil death do you part because you may not have faced deathly situations â or have any comprehension of them. Itâs easy to think love will never be hard. But marriages can be hard work. Likewise, itâs easy to say youâll love your kids unconditionally forever, but loving kids who grow up into things that sometimes resemble monsters can be hard work. Yes, you keep loving them, but itâs not always easy to like them. So the shifting sands of time chip away at the ideals of love. But thereâs real beauty in
66
Womanâs Day
making it through challenges together, in learning and growing and loving each other in different ways. Love is something you have to work at, and that in itself is rewarding. Loving babies is easy ⊠loving teenagers â well, that can be a different story. My daughter said to me the other day that she wanted to marry someone who made her laugh, but who was also her best friend. âLike you and Mike,â she said. I was so chuffed. No, weâre not by any means perfect, but itâs awesome if you can maintain a relationship your kids want to emulate. My parents were always laughing (at and with each other) and still are! They were also (and still are) the best of friends. Their happiness with
each other was infectious. It set the bar for how we wanted to be loved and cherished. But it does take effort. I see with the new mementality, a lot of young people are all about whatâs in a relationship for them. Itâs all about what they can get out of it, instead of thinking about what they can put in. Itâs become a modern calling card of âself-loveâ that if it gets tough, get going. Itâs role-modelled for us in many celebrity relationships â break-ups are more often the news than make-ups. Not just marital relationships either, family relationships too. Even royals can cut and run if they donât like the way the relationship may feel for them ⊠hello Meghan and Harry.
So in this lovey-dovey alentineâs issue of romance Va and roses, I think itâs also good to remember that itâs not all hearts and ïŹowers and chocolates. Sometimes love is late nights changing dirty nappies and long talks about hard subjects. Sometimes itâs swallowing your pride and biting your tongue. Sometimes itâs about saying sorry, or saying nothing at all. Yes, it can be a bed of roses for many people, but itâs disingenuous for young people to believe that thatâs how it will always be â to set an unrealistic expectation of perfect fairytale happyever-afters. No, Iâm not poo-pooing love! Iâm just saying that like all rewards in life, itâs nothing without effort from both sides.

Why I thought that was a good idea I will never know, but now suddenly Iâm Gardening Clog Woman. It takes a great deal of courage to get me to face the backyard, and I did it, but one small scruffy dog ruined my dream. Dad was a great gardener. Mum has always had pot plants and raised them beautifully. But I sigh when someone gives me a plant as a gift. âWell, thanks a lot,â I think to myself woefully. âAnother poor soul off to the executioner.â I am hopeless with plants,
to see a cluster of empty pots. I screamed and went charging outside, only to discover wilted pink plants in their death throes on the brickwork. âBrian!â I bellowed, knowing he would be the culprit. Out through the French doors came a shufïŹing little ewok with his head hung low. âBrian, naughty!â I scolded pointing at the catastrophe. He looked at me and then gave a tiny howl. A howl that said, âSorry, but seriously, you know they would have died anyway.â Oh Brian, how right you are!
I am turning 50 this year and am undecided about whether to have a party or not. Parties can cost quite a bit of money, but I do want to celebrate and mark the occasion somehow. What do you reckon? â Milestone, Whangarei

Who am I? I was born in Washington DC in 1969. I grew up in a rough neighbourhood and by my early teens I was getting in trouble. I wasnât very studious at school, but I was a good athlete and my passion was wrestling. By my late teens I was hitting the gym regularly and working as a bouncer. After meeting some wrestlers at a body-building show, I decided to pursue a career as a WWE ïŹghter. After initial rejection, I persevered and in 2000 I made my debut. Over the next ïŹve years I worked up through the ranks and in 2005 I won my ïŹrst WrestleMania championship. While continuing to ïŹght, I began pursing acting roles and in 2012 I had a small part in Russell Croweâs The Man with the Iron Fists. After a role in Riddick, I was cast as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy. That movie and its sequels propelled my career, and Iâve gone on to appear in Blade Runner 2049 and had a memorable ïŹght scene with Daniel Craig in Spectre. However, itâs my latest ïŹlm, the family comedy My Spy, that has people comparing me to that other famous wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson. Who am I? SOLUTION NEXT WEEK

Have your SAY Has a story got you all worked up? Give us your opinion on our pages True marvel I love a story of redemption and Robert Downey JrĂą€™s tale is incredible (WD, Feb 3). Hollywood actors are constantly scrutinised for every move they make, and it must be easy to get absorbed in the darker side of fame and lose their way. To have overcome drug addictions and time behind bars, all in the public eye, would be demoralising, but I love how Robert has taken control of his life, worked through his demons and turned himself around. WhatĂą€™s also great is how Hollywood embraced him again and the public has marvelled at his performances as Iron Man. He has clearly grown in his role as a father and itĂą€™s wonderful that this has given him the conÄĆč dence to take his second chance. I look forward to seeing more of Robert on the big screen. Sarah-Kate Lynch is not alone in suffering plastic guilt (WD, Feb 3), but one change is better than no change at all. Here are a few sustainable summer ideas of mine: sprout seeds in eggshells or old egg cartons; buy a reusable bag to carry your wet togs in; use bamboo stakes in the garden and buy wooden pegs; make your own ice blocks, and share the love by taking extra fruit to a food bank. Plastic is far from fantastic. ĂąœĆ Jann, Auckland

Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston together again? Ah, yes! Like editor Sido, I feel unusually ex xcited at the prospect of th hese two soulmates reuniting. Id donĂą€™t really know why I ca are Ăą€“ I donĂą€™t generally get em motionally inÄĆč‚amed by the go oings-on of A-list stars, but th hese two just seem so right, in n a way Brad and Angelina Jo olie never were. Jen looks so ec cstatic and beautiful in her Dior gown (WD, Feb 3). Just one little quibble from me: perhaps she needs to become reacquainted with the value of a good bra. There was a nip (or two) in the air that night! Your STARS
Your heavenly destiny for the week February 3-9 Pisces
FEB 20 â MAR 20
Youâre probably caught up in a whirl of activity. Some Aquarians might even get roped into a managerial or coaching role. Yes, life looks busy, but thereâs fun to be had too. Let your hair down this weekend at a concert or community event, or line up a red-hot date.
Gemini
MAY 22 â JUN 21 Opinions and feelings are ïŹying around this week. Someoneâs comments might get you steamed up, but they could also spur you into action. If youâve fallen into a rut, schedule a brainstorming session with a friend, then burn off some fuel with an active weekend.
Libra
PICTURES: GETTY IMAGES.
SEP 24 â OCT 23 Your social sectorâs heating up, so cast those worries aside and amp up the fun! Friendships formed through February might be fated and as a spin-off, your networking skills could lead to more satisfying work opportunities. Sundayâs full moon could reveal someoneâs wild side â and youâre intrigued.
With Mars boosting the pace, thereâs no lounging around for you. Expect the phone to ring hot with gossipy news, invitations or even an offer of work. On the health front, a fresh approach could work wonders. Fridayâs fertile moon may put a twinkle in couplesâ eyes.
Cancer JUN 22 â JUL 23
As your thoughts turn to the future, inventive new strategies could take shape. Canny Crabs might even dream up a money-making enterprise, or an investment opportunity might hit the radar. Treat yourself to a massage or beauty treatment towards the weekend, then prepare for compliments!
Aries
MAR 21 â APR 20 Your multitasking abilities are impressive, but slow down as the weekend approaches. Let your mind drift because with Neptune stimulating your imagination, exciting dreams could become a reality. If you canât spend some lazy time in a deckchair, get a massage or take a long walk.
Leo
JUL 24 â AUG 23 Set your sights high and believe in yourself because an amazing opportunity is heading your way! Conversations may be intense, but they could lead to breakthroughs. Sundayâs emotional full moon might even bring a reconciliation â or a heartfelt declaration.
Scorpio
Sagittarius
OCT 24 â NOV 22
NOV 23 â DEC 22
Changes on the homefront or with a loved one may throw you initially, but donât panic as your next phase is ready to be mapped out. If a local club or study course has caught your eye, make a few enquiries and set the wheels in motion. Use it or lose it!
A few special touches around your home could make a big difference. Some Archers might even repaint or create artwork. As your sensitivity increases, why not reassess your use of household chemicals? For singles, Saturdayâs moon may produce sparks, but donât come on too strong.
Taurus
APR 21 â MAY 21 Annoyed by someoneâs behaviour? Stewing on things will only make you cranky, so speak up. If your energy levels are ïŹagging, book a few tests, then reassess your diet. Even simple changes could make a big difference, and as the pace increases, youâll want to feel your best.
Virgo
AUG 24 â SEP 23 As feelings are magniïŹed, couples may ïŹnd themselves drawing closer together, while singles might view someone in a new light â a friend could even become a lover. Sundayâs dynamic full moon could propel you into a more proactive health phase as well and others will follow your positive lead.
Capricorn DEC 23 - JAN 20
As Venus lights up your home sector, beautiful objects may take on an added shine. Furnishings or even a whole new abode could send you into ïŹights of fantasy. Sundayâs full moon could bring a reality check. If ïŹnances are an issue, it might be just what you need.

The champagne then ïŹowed as Jay-Z, who threw the party on behalf of his record label Roc Nation, made a series of toasts with his pals, including Rihanna, Usher, Lana Del Rey and P.
