New Year, New Attitude How to Tap More Joy in 2020 by Christa Melnyk Hines

Want to bring more joy into your home this year? Try shifting your mindset. Not only can adopting a more optimistic attitude create a happier life, you’ll influence how well your kids respond to life’s daily challenges too. “Children watch their parents. They pick up on moods and beliefs. A positive attitude is contagious--as is a negative attitude,” says psychologist Dr. Kristen Hensley. Positively rewarding. A positive outlook boosts productivity, energy and motivation; helps reduce stress; enhances confidence and self-esteem; benefits health and even improves relationships with others. “A positive attitude can also help us be more flexible in our thinking and make seeing solutions to problems easier,” Hensley says. “Looking for silver linings in life can help build mental resilience and general optimism.” Practice self-awareness. Try tracking your moods to get a better sense of what you’ll need to do to better care for yourself each day. Jessica Mostaffa, early childhood mental health specialist and therapist who works with mothers suffering from depression, says this tactic helps her clients take a more mindful approach to their day-to-day emotional well-being. Make a happiness list. Brainstorm a list of activities that help you feel better when you’re feeling depleted. Your list might include taking a warm shower, watching a comedy, gardening or taking a walk with a friend. 6

Our Kids Magazine | January 2020

“When moms start working on increasing time for themselves, it not only decreases depressive symptoms, but they also report having a better, more positive relationship and interactions with their children, partners and others in the home,” Mostaffa says. Invite your kids to make lists too. When they’re angry or upset, they can turn to their list to help them manage their emotions in a healthy way. For example, shoot hoops, listen to music, draw, read or call a trusted friend. Reframe negative thoughts. Rather than trying to ignore them, work with cynical thoughts that creep into your head. Mostaffa suggests asking yourself grounding questions like: “What’s the evidence that thought is true?” “What’s the evidence that thought is not true?” “What’s the worst thing that could happen? “What’s the best thing that could happen? “And what’s the most likely thing to happen?” Watch how you say it. Notice how you describe your obligations to yourself or others. For instance instead of saying: “It’s my responsibility to make sure the kids have their homework done,” you might say: “It’s my privilege to make sure that my children are doing what’s best for them.” “It’s those subtle shifts that have profound effects on our lives,” says Carla McClellan, an ACC-certified life coach. Voice your gratitude. Foster positive thinking at meal time by inviting your family to share three things for which they feel grateful and why. Bedtime is a good time to reflect on the day too. LIKE US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

“Daily affirmations can be powerful,” Hensley says. “These don’t have to be major things either. A five-year-old might say she’s grateful for the cupcake she got at school for a classmate’s birthday celebration because it made her happy. The purpose is to teach this kind of thinking and help it become a more natural part of everyday life.” Create a vision board. Imagine what you and your family would like to accomplish in the year ahead. Either make a family vision board or individual ones. Grab a stack of old magazines, scissors, glue and poster board. Cut out inspiring words, quotes and pictures. Ask each other questions like: “What are our dreams for the coming year?” “What do we want to see happen in our lives?” “What would an ideal vacation look like?” Set intentions. Alongside your daily to-do list, make a “to-be” list.Every morning set your intention. Ask yourself “who am I willing to be today?” Kind? Loving? Generous? Enthusiastic? “An intention is a laser focus for our energy. When we claim who we are willing to be, we can be that,” McClellan says.

Play together. Experts agree, families who play together tend to be happier and more deeply connected. Whether you throw the football, compete in a game of cards, dance to funky music in your living room, or make up games on a car ride, play will strengthen your relationship with each other. Experiment with what works for your family. “All of these types of activities and rituals are very important because they’re modeling a positive attitude, building a healthy way of thinking and interacting with the world, and helping children understand the link between thoughts, feelings and behaviors,” Hensley says.

Encourage quiet time. Quiet, unplugged time helps nurture creative thinking, problem-solving and stress reduction.

Weigh the positive and negative. If your child is troubled by a situation at school or at home, encourage him to write down a positive thought about it on a card. On the opposite side, have him write the negative thought. “Then you can discuss with your child each side, how each makes him or her feel, and what the consequences of each side might be,” Hensley says. “Remind children that it’s OK to have negative thoughts and feelings. We just don’t want them to rule our lives.”

EDUCATION GUIDE

Hook a Book Lover:

10 Clever Ways to Get Kids to Read by Janeen Lewis

One of the most important things parents can do is raise a reader. Successful reading leads to successes in academics and gives kids a solid start in life. In fact, recent research shows that kids who read at least 15 minutes a day have accelerated reading gains. But no matter how diligent parents are at supporting reading, sometimes kids resist. Books have to compete with those oh-so-scintillating devices, video games and TV streaming apps. Why not shake things up a bit and try some stealthy ways to hook a book lover? The following 10 ideas are sure to win over the most reluctant reader.

1. Free Stuff! If your kids don’t believe you, ask Siri or Google “free stuff kids can earn by reading” and oodles of free items will pop up. By merely recording the titles they are reading, my own children have earned these things free: Pizza Hut Personal Pan Pizzas, frozen yogurt, books from Barnes and Noble, and amusement park tickets. One time my son turned in the most reading logs in our local summer reading program and got to be interviewed on the radio by a DJ. She gave him a basket of goodies including movie tickets for our whole family. 2. Let the books out. Don’t cage them up on the shelves! When my son was eight, he announced that he didn’t want to read non-fiction books because they bored him. I checked out a big stack of nonfiction titles from the library and in my most nonchalant voice said, “You don’t have to read these, but I think I will. They seem very interesting.” I strategically placed the books 8

Our Kids Magazine | January 2020

throughout the house, concentrating on his favorite places. That kid read every book by the end of the week. Research shows that kids from print-rich homes are better readers, but it helps if the books, magazines and newspapers are out where kids can see them. Put bins and baskets of books in the bathroom, in the car, and spread out books with inviting covers all over hard surfaces in your home.

3. Reward with extra bedtime reading. Have you noticed that your child who has a plague-like aversion to reading during the day suddenly develops a fondness for reading when it’s time for bed? Why not embrace this motivation and let your child earn extra reading time at bedtime? If he or she reads for a specified amount of time or reads a certain number of books, extend lights out for a few minutes -- as long as your child spends that time reading. 4. Make your book nook the envy of the neighborhood. Think: tent with twinkle lights. Plump pillows. Comfy chairs. Make your child’s reading space as comfortable and inviting as you can. The most original reading space I’ve seen was at a school. It was a model of the fictional Narnia ship Dawn Treader. Kids climbed a ladder to a reading nook on top that was cushioned with carpet and pillows. But don’t think your home’s reading space has to be fancy. When my children were young they draped a sleeping bag over the footboard of our queen-sized bed. Extending it from the back of the bed, they lapped it over a chair and then curled up with their books in the “reading fort.” When reading time was over, we put everything away. Another fun LIKE US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazineSA

EDUCATION GUIDE thing my kids have done is build a “reading cave” with old moving boxes.

5. Make it a double feature. Every year new films come out that are inspired by books. If your child wants to see a movie that was based on a book, have them read the book first and then rent the movie and watch it together. Compare the two, and have your child explain which he or she liked better, the movie or the book. 6. Get graphic. Umm. . . I’m talking graphic novels here. They may not be the conventional kind of books parents grew up with, but they may draw your child into reading. And while you are mixing it up, let them read comic books. Oh, and throw in some audio books and let them read on a device sometimes. Imagine all the possibilities that might engage your child in reading.

Apply Today! Come see why more families are choosing Brooks!

7. Let them order a magazine subscription. I let my daughter have a magazine subscription, and she chose “Ask Magazine” for science and art lovers. She reads them repeatedly, quoting facts and digging further into topics she finds in the magazine, like poisonous plants and venomous animals. Magazine subscriptions that come specifically for the kids of the house make them feel grown up and tempt them to read. Some good ones to try: Ask, Ranger Rick, National Geographic Kids, Sports Illustrated Kids, Cobblestone, Ladybug and Highlights. 8. Tickle a funny bone. From Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid, to Peggy Parish’s Amelia Bedelia, or Sara Pennypacker’s Clementine, a funny story is a good way to hook a book lover. And if you read a humorous book with your child, you might find yourself chuckling along, too. 9. Let there be light. Come on, don’t be so stuffy! Let them read with a flashlight under the covers. (Or try a little reverse psychology and forbid them to read with a flashlight under the covers -- maybe they’ll sneak and do what you want them to!) Also, there are a plethora of really cool reading lights in today’s universe. Headlamps are a unique option, and there are even book lights that keep track of minutes read. 10. Be a rock star reader yourself. Carve out time daily for your child to see you pouring over the paper, curling up with your favorite book, or discussing a tidbit from a magazine. Model a reading life, and your child will be more likely to embrace the same literature-loving values. Janeen Lewis is a writer, teacher and mom to Andrew and Gracie. When she’s not trying to tame the whirlwind that is her life, you’ll find her curled up with a good book.

Friends and Friendships by Karissa Tunis

Friendships are unique. Each one looks a little different, and each offers a different connection. As you raise your own kids, you will find yourself going through different phases. This means that who you surround yourself with, will also be changing. You might soon find that you have your old friends, your new friends, your “mom” friends - who happen to be the moms of your child’s friends - the soccer moms, the dance moms, church friends, work friends, etc. But no matter how or why you became friends, there are a few important things to remember:

Surround yourself with good friends. Look for people that make you happy, make you laugh, who help when someone is in need, who would never take advantage of you, and who genuinely care. These are the friends worth keeping in your life. Everyone else is just passing through. It is so important who we surround ourselves with! And if you choose your friends wisely, they will be there for you in big ways when needed most! Pick friends that can teach you something new. It’s important to always be moving forward in life, and growing as a person in a positive way. When you can walk away from a conversation and feel that somehow you improved from it - it’s very rewarding! How wonderful to learn something new about life, hear a new tip, find inspiration, or have a good laugh! By picking friends that have dreams,

desires and ambitions, they will help you grow and achieve your goals too.

The saying is true – “To Have A Good Friend, You Need To Be A Good Friend.” Picking friends and surrounding yourself with good people might come easy for you. But how do you rate at being a good friend? What truly means the most is often times not the gifts or items that people give, but the time that is given. Whether it is to make someone a meal when they are hurting, or to sit and visit with someone that is lonely, or when you take the time to help a busy friend with their children, - these are the moments that true friendships are made. These are the moments that will be remembered and appreciated. And these are the moments that make a relationship deeper. Oftentimes when someone needs help they don’t tend to shout it from the rooftops. But a genuine friend knows when a heart is breaking, and they will show up to stand beside you during a time when you feel like you might fall. A good friend is someone who others can count on when times are tough. And if you want to be that good dependable friend, than you need to be willing and able to put in the time and commitment in order to know what is happening in their life. They say that friends are the family members that you can actually pick. Just be sure you are picking a good one, and that you are being that good friend too! Tweets, Texts, & Emojis by Sandi Schwartz

Why Communicating In Brief Snippets Is Hurting Our Kids How did we get to a point in which our method of communication has gotten progressively shorter and shorter over time? One day recently on Twitter there was a hashtag asking people to tell a story in three words. Just. Three. Words. When we are limited to only 280 characters (characters, not words!), how can anyone expect to really understand what we mean? And when pre-teens and teens only “talk” to their friends using brief phrases and emoji’s, what are we left with? Here are five aspects of communication that are being sacrificed when our children grow up speaking and writing in phrases, which can only hinder their development over time:

quick option, it will impact how they express their emotions as they grow. Additionally, when we hide behind our devices instead of talking face-to-face with those who we love, we miss out on a major chance for emotional connection. According to Psychology Today, this kind of communication interferes with actual conversation and undermines our ability to connect with others. Social media actually becomes a barrier to connecting with others. As children are constantly exposed to these quick impersonal ways of “expressing” themselves, they miss out on learning how to accurately convey their thoughts and feelings both in writing and out loud.

Emotional Connection and Expression We use words to express our feelings to others about our observations, concerns, and hopes. How will our children learn to do this if they are cutting out an enormous opportunity for verbal and written expression by dumbing down the message? Researchers are assessing whether emoticons help us communicate better or hinder self-expression. They have found that on one hand it is nice to have an international symbol for certain emotions that we can easily click on to communicate how we feel about a Facebook post. However, emoticons convey a limited choice of emotions, reducing ways to truly express our full range of feelings we have on an issue. It also cuts out the opportunity for people to use descriptive words to say how they feel because they are given a shorthand option to simply click on one image that is supposed to capture their thoughts and feelings. This is unfortunately limiting opportunities for expression, and if our children grow up with this

Non-Verbal Communication Nothing beats looking into someone’s eyes to truly understand what they mean and how they feel. A huge part of our daily communications depends on visual cues like facial expressions, body language, posture, and tone of voice. In fact, studies show that only 7 percent of communication is based on the written or verbal word, while 93 percent is based on nonverbal body language. Sitting behind a screen sending a few words or images is not going to help you really understand how the person on the other end thinks and feels. As children spend more time in this world of snippets, they are losing the ability to pick up on these non-verbal expressions which can be so important in understanding others. UCLA scientists found that sixth-graders who went five days without using a smartphone, television, or other digital screen did much better at understanding human emotions than those who spent several hours a day looking at their electronic devices. Patricia Greenfield, the author of the study,

explained that decreased sensitivity to emotional cues is lost when in-person social interaction is replaced with screen interaction. Learning how to read other people’s moods is a skill that takes a lot of practice. Sadly, children today are missing out on developing that skill.

Social Skills Children and teens lose out on a whole slew of social skills when they only communicate in short statements online. Learning how to interact in person with others and to speak in public are critical skills for future success. Our kids need to practice these skills throughout their childhood to get ready for critical moments in their lives like school presentations, college and job interviews, and making an announcement at a social event. In addition, other basic social skills are also being affected. In an article on Huffington Post, Melissa Ortega, a child psychologist at the Child Mind Institute, pointed out how children are struggling to deal with face-to-face conflict because they are used to hiding behind their screens to communicate. They are not getting enough interpersonal exposure, and Ortega said that conversations take practice. Experts are also seeing how this type of limited communication is influencing the dating world. Teens raised to just text and not hold a personal conversation are limited in how they can express their feelings to their peers. The lack of direct communication is impacting their ability to build trust and develop an emotional connection with others. Creative Language, Grammar and Spelling Another way that brief communication is changing our children’s lives is in the classroom. The way kids are communicating online is creeping into their school work, leading to sloppy grammar, spelling mistakes, and reduced creativity. The best literature throughout history is filled with embellished language and imaginative stories. If our children limit the number of words they use to tell a story or to debate an issue, the entire premise of communications changes. The Association of American Educators indicates that social media has led to students talking in “text-speak”, causing an overall trend of bad grammar, bad punctuation, and bad spelling for the sake of convenience and speed. Abbreviations used on social media are also making it into coursework, which is clearly incorrect language. The Guardian reported that a paper released by the English Spelling Society concludes that the internet has revolutionized the English language and made spelling mistakes the norm. This is not a surprise since we now rely on crutches like auto-correct that reduces the level of thought required to write. Meaning of Words How many times have you misinterpreted what someone wrote in an email or text? So much is lost in translation when we are unable to see or hear how the person is communicating specific words to us. If children are primarily communicating with friends and family by typing phrases, that leaves so many

opportunities for the message to be misconstrued. This can lead to stressful situations because the reader may jump to the wrong conclusion that the writer intended to be hurtful, when in reality it was just how the words were interpreted. Brief communication can then lead to negative emotions like anger, depression, or anxiety over how someone thinks they are being treated. As an example, an article in Forbes discussed how the instances of misinterpretation are growing in the business environment. As people are rushed, stressed, and primarily communicating with quick electronic messages, they are not taking the time to consider the nuances of their writing. This is leading to more conflicts about the tone of emails. It is only worse with our children who are gossiping and making plans with friends in group texts using symbols and acronyms. How does someone really know what it means when the writer uses all capital letters? Are they yelling, joking, or just highlighting an issue? When someone responds to you with a one- or two-word answer, does that mean they are brushing you off? With this type of communication, we are left to draw conclusions with very little information. If our children do not learn how to tell people exactly what they mean using complete sentences, how will they ever be happy and successful?

What can parents do about it? A day doesn’t go by when we hear suggestions for limiting our children’s screen time. We are all struggling to implement this in our homes. What else can we do to encourage our children to communicate more thoroughly and effectively? ■■Read every day with your children at all ages, but the

real key is to also discuss what you are reading. Ask tons of question and encourage your kids to summarize the stories. ■■Create games that involve developing a story together. For example, fill a jar with topics and then ask each family member to write or state 3 sentences. Keep building the story. ■■Teach your children how to debate and encourage them to join a debate team when they get older. ■■Ask your kids questions and encourage them to talk about how they feel. It is so important to set aside special times to have these deep conversations. ■■Encourage your children to journal so that they can practice expressing their thoughts and feelings in writing. Ask them what adjectives they used and challenge them to develop their thoughts even more. ■■Have fun analyzing each other’s or stranger’s body language in person or on television. ■■Eat meals together as a family and include your children in conversations about all types of topics from how their day at school was to current affairs. ■■Provide public speaking opportunities for your children, even if it is something as simple as ordering their meal at a restaurant. BABYTOTS

10 Tips to Build Your Toddler’s Vocabulary By Denise Morrison Yearian

Every parent wants to give their toddler a head start with regard to speaking, and experts suggest it’s easier than most people think. “You don’t have to spend a bundle on DVDs or flashcards,” says speech-language pathologist Amy Nelson. “Language acquisition is birthed through face-to-face interactions, and by engaging your child in everyday activities and experiences.” Following are ten simple suggestions on how to build your toddler’s vocabulary. 1. Associate through reading. “Create an interactive experience by making books come alive for your child,” says Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, Ph.D., educator and three-time author on this subject. “When you are reading together, pick up on your child’s interest then relate the content of the book to his life. If there’s a picture of a dog, say ‘That’s like Grandma’s dog. Where else have you seen a dog?’ So he links what he sees in the book to his own experiences.” 2. Incorporate core vocabulary. “Choose books that have bright colors, simple pictures and short phrases or sentences that use core vocabulary—nouns such as animals, toys and food,” says Nelson. “Give your child an opportunity to label and repeat words. Also use what 18

Our Kids Magazine | January 2020

speech-language pathologists call ‘Expansion.’ If your child says, ‘Cat,’ you say, ‘Big cat,’ or ‘Sleeping cat’ by adding an adjective or verb to increase his length of utterance.” 3. Encourage repetition. “Children often have a favorite book they want to hear time and again, and that’s okay,” says Golinkoff. “Repeated readings build toddler’s vocabulary and story structure understanding.” Amy Vitsorek found this to be true. “Right now [my 2 ½ year old] Maggie is into princesses, so every day she carries around a suitcase that has four princess books in it. She’s memorized the storyline and tells it in her own words by looking at the pictures. Then she’ll ask me to read it to her,” she says. 4. Visit venues. “Take trips to venues that have programs specifically designed for children,” says Nelson. “Children’s museums have a variety of exhibits so toddlers can learn words about opposites such as wet and dry, big and little, up and down. If you go to other sites such as natural history or art museums, scale it down to your child’s level. Focus on basic vocabulary and point out the animals, flowers, shapes and colors you see.” “Last year when we took Conner to the zoo, I pointed out different animals such as an elephant and talked about its big ears and long nose,” says Danielle Jackson of her FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

BABYTOTS now 22 month old. “Later if we saw an animal on TV or in a book, I’d remind him of our trip and encourage him to say its name and make the animal sound.” 5. Out and about. “Everyday outings provide opportunities to talk about what you see at the supermarket, pharmacy, park and doctor’s office,” says Golinkoff. “When you take walks, point out different things and bring back leaves, rocks and sticks so you and your child can count, sort and explore more. When he goes to the pediatrician for a well checkup, trace around his body on the table paper, then take it home and help him label his body parts.” 6. Sing songs. “Interactive songs and rhymes that incorporate movement with melodic or rhythmic patterns are captivating for children and encourage vocabulary expansion,” says Vitsorek, who teaches music to preschoolers. “Ones like ‘Head and Shoulders’ help them learn body part identification; others such as ‘Eentsy Weentsy Spider’ teach directional concepts.” 7. Tinker with toys. “Blocks and simple puzzles offer geometric and spatial language with terms like ‘above,’ ‘below’ and ‘next to,’” says Golinkoff. “Dress up clothes increase language too. Give your child old clothes and play along with his fantasy.” “Your toddler may not be ready for board games but you can use the game pieces as manipulatives,” says Nelson. “Put checkers into different piles according to colors and count them. Or adapt games such as Barnyard Bingo to work on matching, naming and counting.” 8. Interactive games. “I use interactive games such as ‘This Little Piggy’ and ‘Humpty Dumpty’ to build Maggie’s vocabulary,” says Vitsorek. “I’ll stop and leave off a word so she can fill it in. When we’re driving in the car, we also play ‘I Spy’ with colors. As a result, she knows all of her colors.” 9. Narrate routines. “Encouraging talk during our daily routines has been a great way to expand Conner’s vocabulary,” says Jackson. “When he’s getting dressed I’ll say, ‘I’m putting on your pants . . . your shirt . . . your shoes.’ He’s already starting to repeat those words. He’ll say, ‘Sock?’ And I’ll say, “Yes, that’s your sock.’” 10. Review and retell. “Before going to bed, rehash the day’s activities to cement vocabulary your child used during the day,” says Golinkoff. “Or encourage him to recount his experiences to another adult with your assistance.” Denise Morrison Yearian is the former editor of two parenting magazines and the mother of three children and four grandchildren. How to have your second pregnancy the first time by Pam Moore

The night before I found out I was pregnant with my first child, my biggest concern was finding an amazing restaurant where my husband and could go to celebrate our anniversary during a weekend away. We found the perfect restaurant, where I enjoyed way too much wine... At least it was organic. (I think.)The next day, I peed on that fateful stick. At the airport, instead of paging through Real Simple, I scrolled BabyCenter and nearly spit out the sushi I’d been devouring. I shuddered to think what other pregnancy laws I’d unknowingly violated over the past 24 hours. I also needed to know: Which fruit did my baby most resemble, five weeks, two days, and 17 hours into my pregnancy? Two years later, while my toddler sat on the bathroom floor with a board book, an expired pregnancy test I found at the back of the linen closet revealed a faint plus sign. I waited until my daughter was asleep that night to hit the supermarket for a fresh test. I couldn’t muster the strength to take her to the store for one lousy item. That night, I fell into a dreamless sleep. Between pregnancy and toddler-wrangling, I didn’t care if I was carrying a peanut, a kumquat, or a glazed donut. In hindsight, I wish I could have saved the energy I spent trying to have a perfect pregnancy that first time for other things—like taking my two children, now three and fiveyears-old, to the supermarket. 24

Our Kids Magazine | January 2020

It turns out, I’m not the only one who would do things differently the first time around if given the chance. I talked to a number of women to get their best tips for making your first pregnancy feel like your second.

Chill out Like many, Illinois mom Elizabeth Waterstraat grew more laid back with each subsequent pregnancy. She summarizes her three pregnancies in simple terms. “First: No coffee, no wine. Second: Some coffee, no wine. Third: Daily coffee, some wine.” Allison Schwartz is a Colorado mom who also steadily increased her coffee consumption with each of her pregnancies, noting, “By pregnancy number four [cutting out coffee] was not an option.” During the first pregnancy, there are no kids at our feet distracting us from trying to make sure our little bump is becoming the perfect baby. Joy Jackson, a Colorado mom of three, says if she could go back in time twelve years when she was pregnant with her first, she’d put down her copy of “What to Expect When You’re Expecting.” While Experience teaches us we don’t have as much control as we’d like to believe. Says Waterstraat, “[Babies] will come out the way they want to come out. Not much you do will influence that so relax, let go of ‘plans’ and enjoy the journey.” FRIEND US @ facebook.com/OurKidsMagazine210

BABYTOTS Enjoy It Despite the exhaustion of pregnancy plus toddlerwrangling, Caitlin Hardy enjoyed her second pregnancy fully, knowing her fatigue would only intensify once her baby came. Of her second pregnancy, the Colorado mom says, “I didn’t have time to stop and think about how I felt or to complain about the exhaustion, backache or sore boobs.” Instead, she focused on the experiences she’d have less, if any time for, once her newborn arrived. “I went out to dinner more, hung out with girlfriends more, did prenatal yoga every Sunday, ran around at the bike park with my toddler, nabbed every date I could go on with my husband.” For Morgan McGarvey, a Colorado mom of a toddler and a newborn, enjoying her second pregnancy meant doing less, not more. “I gave myself MANY passes.” With her first pregnancy, she strictly avoided the prescribed dietary no-no’s, went to “every possible class” and had her nursery decorated well before her due date. With her second, she skipped the classes, enjoyed some brie cheese, and held off on buying anything for the nursery until after her baby arrived. “Both kids are totally healthy and each pregnancy was completely different,” says McGarvey.

Everything in moderation Many women regret taking the idea of eating for two and getting plenty of rest a little too seriously the first time around. Laura Kurian, a New Jersey mom of three, wishes she’d forced herself to exercise more during her first pregnancy. A dedicated athlete who enjoys running and triathlon, Kurian says she was glad she only made that mistake once. “I was miserable during my first pregnancy. The second and third were so much better!” Colorado mom Karli Sherwinter also says she wishes she’d had a better prenatal exercise regimen. Only years later, she realized her chronic knee pain stemmed from hip weakness caused by her pregnancies. Allison Schwartz is a Colorado mom who says she gained much more weight than was necessary during her first pregnancy. “It took me a full year and a triathlon to get the weight off.” During her subsequent three pregnancies, she found it easier to eat more reasonably and exercise more, considering she was busy chasing young children around. Any mom will tell you, you can’t recreate the novelty (or the neurosis) of your first pregnancy… and that’s okay. Massachusetts mom Liz Willey says she felt guilty about paying so much more attention to her first pregnancy versus the second. “But in the end,” says Willey, whose sons are one and four, “I shouldn’t have worried. They are both nutty, happy boys!” Pam Moore helps women push through fear to become their best selves. To get her free guide to crushing Impostor Syndrome visit pam-moore.com
