Then, when the air starts to cool down and the leaves begin to change, I find myself getting excited. In Choctaw Country, there are so many wonderful things to look forward to during the fall and winter seasons! Take a brisk (or long) hike through the stunning fall foliage, find some of the greatest hunting and fishing spots for miles around, or treat yourself during perfect camping temperatures to a spectacular view of the stars.

Whether you are looking for a peaceful retreat or a weekend adventure, our community members are here to welcome you with open arms and true southern hospitality. Choctaw Nation Annual Powwow

If you’ve never been to a powwow, this is the one to attend. The Choctaw Powwow is one of the nation’s largest, with more than 50 tribes from across the country participating. Join us for a celebration of Native American and First Nations tribes through stickball, dancing, music, food and more.

Serving up good old-fashioned food and entertainment, Reba’s Place is a two-story dining and entertainment venue in downtown Atoka that was born from a partnership between the country music legend and Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. Inspired by Reba’s upbringing, as well as places she’s lived, the menu features southern classics like chicken fried steak, pinto beans and cornbread, Nashville hot chicken, and locally harvested steaks from Choctaw Ranches.

In 1884, the Choctaw Capitol Building was established as home to the Choctaw government and served as the Council House until Oklahoma achieved statehood in 1907. Today, this stately brick building still stands in Tuskahoma, serving as a testament to the accomplishments of the Choctaw people. The museum features exhibits on important aspects of Choctaw history and culture, including the Trail of Tears and Choctaw Code Talkers. The surrounding grounds sprawl across five immaculately kept acres—the perfect location for stickball tournaments, weddings, social dancing and the annual Choctaw Labor Day Festival.

Fishing Trails

Some of the best fishing in the U.S. can be found right here in Choctaw Country. Reel in some muskie, saugeye and red-ear sunfish at Lake Carlton, or beat your personal best at Broken Bow Lake with the biggest largemouth you’ve ever seen. The Mountain Fork River offers walleye, spotted bass and brown trout. No matter the type of fish you’re after, you’ll find some great honey holes in Southeastern Oklahoma.

Alligator gar may be caught by use of rod and reel, trotline, and throwline. Alligator gar taken by bow and arrow, gigs, spears, or spearguns cannot be released. Alligator gar caught and placed on a stringer cannot be released (a practice called culling). Harvest must be reported within 24 hours via E-Check at wildlifedepartment.com. The attempt to take or harvest alligator gar is prohibited statewide May 1-31.

It is unlawful to take or possess more than 25 nongame bait fish in rivers or streams, except for shad, of which 200 may be taken or possessed.

Daily limit is 1 for any fish species of special concern in category I or II, which includes alligator gar, black buffalo, shovelnose sturgeon (see Title 800:25-19-6). Such harvest must be reported to the Wildlife Department. In rivers and streams: black bass (largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted): six combined per day, only one of which may be a smallmouth bass. Largemouth and smallmouth bass must be 14 inches or longer. No size limit on spotted bass.
