PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear friends,
There is a Holy Spirit-driven law of exponentiation that is activated through our generosity. I have seen it time and again over the past 28 years as President of Olivet. When we give freely and gladly to the causes of Christ, God takes our gifts and multiplies them for His good purposes. This miracle of increase and expanse is certainly true with our gifts and giving to Olivet. When we give to Olivet, our gifts fuse with the generosity of others and a divine force for good is once again advanced in the world. A transfer of blessing occurs and we participate fully in the moving of the Spirit through the lives of thousands of Olivet graduates — women and men inspired to accomplish great things for God. The truth is that through our giving, we go with Dr. Teresa Woodruff ’85 as she enters the laboratory and leads teams to find cures for cancer. We go with Suzanne Bell ’98 in her extraordinary work for NASA and space travel. We step onto the stage of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City with Bradley Garvin ’87 as he spreads joy through his singing, artistry and testimony. We go

with Rusty Funk ’07 as he brings clean water to thousands of the least of these with Team World Vision. We go with LaMorris Crawford ’06/’12 M.O.L. as he ministers to NFL players and their families around the country who are often so desperate for hope, truth, compassion and clarity. We go with our students as they build homes in Papua New Guinea or minister to the homeless in Chicago or prepare for lives of service in thousands of classrooms, churches, hospitals, courtrooms and businesses around the world. The list goes on and on and on. And the incredible tandem truth to this spiritual law of exponentiation is that the one who gives the gift is blessed abundantly as well. What an incredible God we serve! So, on behalf of the entire Olivet family, I want to express our sincere thanks to each of you. You are our advocates, our partners in ministry and our friends. t didn’t take long for freshman, Savannah Neisch to settle into college life. The same day that she moved in to Williams Hall, she had her first practice with the junior varsity tennis team. That involvement got her instantly plugged in to life at Olivet. Although her college experience has been successful thus far, the road from home was literally and figuratively long and a bit bumpy, and Savannah doubted for a time whether or not all the details would come together. Growing up in Forest, Virginia, Savannah attended a Nazarene church with her adopted mother and siblings. She first heard about Olivet when she attended Nazarene Youth Conference (NYC) 2015 in Louisville, Kentucky. Four years later at NYC 2019, in Phoenix, Arizona, Savannah was able to connect with her future Olivet roommate. She reflects, “I was nervous about the social side of college life, but establishing a connection before I came to Olivet helped relieve that anxiety a little.” Toward the end of her senior year of high

school, Olivet was at the top of Savannah’s list, but she wasn’t sure that financing would work out. She implicitly understood that things of value and substance require an investment of time, effort and resources and she resolved to save money to help contribute to the costs of her education. Receiving her award letter and financial aid package helped fill in the gaps to make her Olivet dream a reality. Before enrolling at the University, Savannah and her mom combed through the list of majors in the back of an issue of Olivet The Magazine. She carefully considered options that would allow her to write and communicate, as she has always had a passion for transporting ideas to paper. Olivet initially stood out
from other college options because the University also offers a French minor. After taking French throughout high school, she was determined to continue her studies and travel to France one day; which she plans to do through one of the many study abroad opportunities that Olivet offers. For now, she’s finding a balance between focusing on school and getting involved on campus. In addition to managing her full course load and tennis practice schedule, she holds an on‑campus job with physical plant. Although she’s fully enjoyed the social aspects of Olivet, she relishes a job that allows her to work quietly and independently. As Savannah looks forward to the rest of her college experience, she anticipates years full of stimulating classes, life-long friendships and an abundance of new opportunities to experience new joys in the world around her. She says, “My time at Olivet has been a learning experience. The professors are incredibly knowledgeable about the material and are able to engage the students with their enthusiasm and humor. I’m looking forward to the years ahead.” ■

VALUING THE OLIVET EXPERIENCE: ONE DONOR COUPLE’S STORY
J
oe Bowman graduated from Olivet in 1968 with a degree in music education. After graduation, he met his wife, Carroll. Over their 50 years of marriage, they have raised three children and now have six grandchildren.

As a child, Joe received a strong foundation of Christian values and faith in God from his parents. When he looked for a college that would continue to build on that foundation, Olivet was a natural choice. The University reinforced those values and added new dimensions that Joe needed to successfully navigate the turbulences of life. A significant aspect of Joe’s Olivet experience was building meaningful relationships with faculty and staff members. “The attention I received was as a person and not just a number. My professors made huge impacts on my life. Professor Curtis Brady drove to Ohio to be with me after the sudden death of my father during my sophomore year and Professor Dwayne Little took the time to personally explain

why tolerance and diversity are so important in living as a Christian. Before coming to Olivet, these concepts of fully living out a life of faith were not a part of my background.” After teaching for seven years as a high school band director, Joe was convinced that a career in education was not the best fit. “I wanted a new direction that would put my training and teaching experience to use in a business environment,” he reflects. “The Lord directed my steps first into a sales position, and then in 1978, He guided me into starting Century Resources, a school fundraising company.” After 40 exciting and successful years, Joe retired, but maintains his position as Chairman of the Board. Joe feels that his life can be summed up through the verse Proverbs 16:9. “The mind of
a man plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” Joe says, “I believe Proverbs is telling us that a plan is important. Olivet helped me develop my mind so I could make a plan, implement it and be prepared to take God’s next steps.” “Over time, I have come to have an increased appreciation for the major impact Olivet had on my life. It strengthened my values, increased my faith in God and provided me with the necessary tools to take the steps that God directed in my life.” Looking back at his career and educational experiences, Joe is still confident of his decision to attend Olivet. “If I were talking to a young person who is considering different college options, I would tell them that Olivet offers a quality education guided by Christian values; the University values personal needs as an individual; and that at Olivet, you will meet people who become lifelong friends.” “Carroll and I believe in ONU, and by giving support to the University, we are investing in its mission and helping make a positive difference in our world for generations to come.” ■

THE IMPACT OFAN ONU ADVOCATE A s a youth pastor who seeks to cultivate meaningful connections with more than 100 students, Josh Parker ’14 is an ONU Advocate.

In six years as a pastor, he has helped seventeen students enroll at Olivet, wholeheartedly believing that the University is a transformative place for students transitioning from high school to the workforce. This past year alone, he brought eight students to Red Carpet Days and twenty-four students to Celebrate Life. Josh says, “I am inspired to be an ONU Advocate
because I was greatly impacted by my experience as a student. Everything including the faculty and staff, chapel services and even the lifelong friendships I have made, deeply shaped who I am and what I believe today. I have seen the impact that ONU has had on my students and the way they have grown and matured personally and spiritually through their time at the University.” ■
