Before there was marijuana legalization in the majority of states, CBD was introduced first across the nation. CBD the more “calmer” molecule found in cannabis plants, does not contain the psychoactive molecule (THC) that gets people high. Although CBD still has health benefits of its own. Along with increasing CBD trends, plant-based diets have also been on the rise with more people adopting a plant-based diet. To clarify, a plant-based diet does not mean going vegan or vegetarian, rather it is a general approach to incorporating more plant-based foods into daily consumption. Why are they both trendy and on the rise? Mostly because of their health benefits. Believe it or not, you really are what you eat! To prove that, about 70% of the human immune system is actually located within the intestines, also known as your gut, where digestion takes place.

Plant-based diets have been recommended by healthcare professionals mainly for their nutrient rich content. Diets rich in plants have also been shown to help reduce/manage diseases like high blood pressure (hypertension), in which high blood pressure can increase the risk of other major health issues like stroke, heart disease, and diabetes while possibly contributing to a longer, healthier life. CBD on the other hand can also help manage stress, anxiety, depression, and inflammation, while also being an effective anti-seizure and neurological disorder treatment. Together, they can increase the quality and longevity of life! Where does CBD come from? CBD is a molecule found in the marijuana plant, however, can also be extracted from hemp plants.

The difference is that hemp contains very little, a minuscule amount of THC, again the psychoactive molecule that gets people “high”, whereas marijuana plants contain varying but more amounts of THC. In short, CBD can be extracted from the leaves of both marijuana and hemp plants, which are both parts of the cannabis plant family. So, naturally, CBD can be incorporated into a plant-based diet easily because it comes from a plant! CBD can be added to foods and drinks through various forms these days. As trendy as it’s become and due it’s legal status, you can find CBD infusions in smoothie and tea shops, fancy cocktails at restaurants, and even incorporated them into foods for a nice, calming meal. CBD can be mixed into an oil for cooking, which can also be used in edibles or put into a capsule for easy ingestion. Topical products are highly popular as well, like a lotion or balm to help with inflammation. CBD flower is bred, so the traditional method of smoking can still be done if that’s preferred. CBD vapes are available now as well for a convenient and discreet inhalation method. Another easy, newer way to ingest CBD comes in bottled drinks, especially bottled waters. Important to mention, not all CBD supplements and their various forms are created equal. A major concern is the purity and dosage of CBD found in these products. Especially for the consumers who do not want THC in their products, as one market study found several brands to contain THC in amounts higher than legally allowed. The best advice is to find one from a trusted source, with testing of their products available for the public to see.

There is always a lot of buzz surrounding the potential benefits of medical marijuana. Most recently, emerging research suggests that it may be a safer yet helpfully potent substitute for opioids to treat pain. But just as research demonstrates the possible benefits of using marijuana for treatment, questions remain about how cannabis might interact with prescribed or over-the-counter medications a person may also be taking. A big challenge is imposed with understanding how marijuana interacts with other products – either prescribed or over the counter – because there are tight restrictions on how the Drug Enforcement Administration schedules marijuana. So even while many people may use marijuana, tight federal regulations limit researchers' ability to study cannabis as approved medications are typically studied, including evaluating whether it can safely be taken with medications. Despite all the medical benefits of cannabis, there are many drugs that it cannot replace. Blood pressure medication, blood thinners, anxiolytics, seizure medications, and chemotherapeutics are common medications that have not demonstrated adverse side effects in conjunction with medical marijuana. Did you know most cannabis-drug interactions can be traced back to liver metabolism? The liver has necessary enzymes called Cytochrome P450 (CYP450) that metabolize most drugs that we take. Cannabinoids like THC and CBD are also metabolized by these enzymes. Other medications can alter the effectiveness of CYP450 enzymes; in the case of cannabis, this can cause your other medicines to get metabolized more slowly. As a result, your prescription medication will remain in your system longer and at higher levels than intended, which can sometimes cause unwanted side effects. 13

JULY 2022

thechronicmagazine.com

Cannabis also has possible interactions with medications unrelated to liver metabolism. For example, some case studies have shown that cannabis combined with SSRI antidepressant medications like Zoloft and Prozac can potentially induce hypomania (elevated moods, racing thoughts, decreased sleep, grandiose ideas, and talkativeness). It is also crucial to pay attention to the route of administration/ingestion. The health of your liver is an example of a factor that can determine whether the current dose of cannabis you use is safe with your other medications. Always speak with your primary care doctor before trying medical cannabis. Furthermore, everyone's cells have different concentrations of the CB1 and CB2 receptors that cannabinoids activate. Some people also have variations in their CYP450 enzymes, which make them less effective at metabolizing cannabinoids, making even low doses of cannabis have more potent effects on them.

If you notice that cannabis is affecting your medications and causing severe side effects, it is recommended that you cease cannabis use and notify your medication prescriber as soon as possible in case doses need to be adjusted; according to Mayo Clinic, Marijuana may affect people's blood-sugar levels; indeed, some studies have found that marijuana users are less resistant to the effects of insulin, the hormone that helps blood sugar get inside cells. This could mean that their systems can better control their blood sugar levels. They also recommended that people who take marijuana with drugs for diabetes should be monitored closely, and adjustments to their medications may be necessary. What research is out there, an example of medicine that could interact dangerously with marijuana is benzodiazepines. Like Valium, Xanax, or Klonopin, a class of drugs primarily used to treat anxiety, can be prescribed for other things as well, i.e., managing insomnia.

However, CBD in marijuana can inhibit an enzyme the liver uses to metabolize medicine like benzodiazepines so that levels of the medication in the body go up. It can increase the blood levels of those benzodiazepines and cause more sedation, potentially leading to problems like overdosing on the medication. THC/CBD can slow down the metabolization of cholesterol medications like Lipitor, too. Researchers state that is important because some people have bad reactions to cholesterol medicines like pain in their muscles, potentially making those reactions worse. Conversely, marijuana use may reduce the effectiveness of other medications, including antidepressants like Cymbalta or duloxetine. For example, one study reported that just in clinical practice, patients that smoke a lot of marijuana and that are on something like Cymbalta need higher doses to get a good effect. That could be because marijuana is speeding up the metabolism of that antidepressant. Theoretically, THC can decrease serum concentrations of clozapine, duloxetine, naproxen, cyclobenzaprine, olanzapine, haloperidol, and chlorpromazine. However, as the enzymes metabolize about a quarter of all drugs, CBD may increase serum concentrations of macrolides, calcium channel blockers, benzodiazepines, cyclosporine, sildenafil (and other inhibitors), and antihistamines.

Here are a few more fun facts relating to medical cannabis and prescription drugs:

8.Ketoconazole

1.Warfarin

Decreases THC concentration by twenty percent and CBD by sixty percent.

THC and CBD increase warfarin levels.

2.Alcohol Alcohol may increase THC levels.

3.Theophylline Smoked cannabis can decrease theophylline levels.

4.Indinavir or Nelfinavir Smoked cannabis had no effect.

5.Docetaxel or Irinotecan Cannabis-infused products (like tea) had no effect

6.Clobazam In children treated with CBD for epilepsy, CBD increased clobazam levels

7.Tacrolimus CBD increases tacrolimus serum concentrations threefold. It does not affect THC levels.

Can double THC and CBD levels.

9.Rifampin 10.Fluoxetine No interactions between THC. Further research is needed on CBD

Considering more permissive changes in the political and cultural climate surrounding marijuana use, physicians should keep an eye out for interactions between marijuana and prescription drugs—especially in the elderly and those with chronic health conditions. Furthermore, they should ask about marijuana use as a detailed history and physical examination. thechronicmagazine.com

CALIFORNIA

NEW YORK

VIRGINIA

A Growing Number of California Cities Are Opening Weed Cafes

Legacy cannabis operators see roadblocks and opportunities in NY's recreational market

Approved Budget Recriminalizes Public Marijuana Possession Over Four Ounces of Marijuana

OJAI, Calif. — Imagine a restaurant where you can order dark chocolate infused with cannabis, or where you can pick a pre-rolled joint from a menu and light up at your table. Think of your neighborhood Starbucks or local dive bar, but with marijuana on tap..

On a recent warm day, a few friends gathered around a table in Grant Atkins' backyard in Rochester. Atkins, a public school teacher and reggae and hip-hop performance artist known as "Skribe Da God," recalled how he was born into the pot culture.

It might sound like Amsterdam, but these businesses appear to be part of the next wave of California’s weed industry, which four years after legalization is still looking for ways to compete with the state’s huge illegal pot market. These cannabis lounges are opening (or reopening, after pandemic closures) in West Hollywood, San Francisco, Palm Springs and elsewhere. And many smaller California cities, including Ojai, a popular destination 90 minutes from Los Angeles, are considering allowing them as a means to increase tax revenue and attract tourists. The idea isn’t universally popular. Though California voters legalized marijuana in 2016, the law preserved local control, and many officials don’t want weed sold in their communities. Source: nytimes.com

Atkins is the kind of legacy cannabis operator state leaders have in mind for New York's initial business licenses for the adult use market. The first 100 or more retail licenses will be offered to people who either had a past marijuana-related offense or have a family member who did. “You cannot be a Black man in America and not be affected by those laws on drugs," said Atkins' friend, Jeffrey Medford. He described what he called his spiritual connection to the cannabis plant and a calling to grow it. "We want to live free, we want to be able to have our own businesses, be our own bosses and take care of our families, like everyone else," Medford said. State leaders say they will expunge the criminal records of those arrested for lowlevel drug offenses, but Jesse Watson, another friend of Atkins and Medford, knows some people who are still afraid to apply for cannabis licenses. The Virginia General Assembly voted to approve the budget bill which contains language to recriminalize personal possession of over four ounces of marijuana in public. The language, which creates two new misdemeanors, will take effect immediately upon Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin’s signing of the budget. Currently, the personal possession in public of more than one ounce and up to one pound of marijuana by adults 21 and older is subject to no more than a $25 civil penalty. Upon the Governor’s signature, personal possession in public of over four ounces and less than a pound of cannabis will be a Class 3 misdemeanor, making it punishable by a $500 fine. Second or subsequent offenses will be Class 2 misdemeanors punishable by up to 6 months in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. “Rather than creating additional ways to criminalize Virginians for personal possession of cannabis, the Virginia General Assembly would better serve constituents by establishing a legal adult-use marijuana market and ensuring that all cannabis products sold in the Commonwealth are accurately labeled and regulated for consumer safety,” said JM Pedini, NORML’s Development Director and the Executive Director of Virginia NORML. “Virginia has by legislating through the budget, legalized retail marijuana, we are just going to call it ‘hemp,’” Delegate Dawn Adams, who spoke against the budget language, told Virginia NORML.

thechronicmagazine.com

“All tetrahydrocannabinols – not just delta-9 THC, but delta-8 THC and other synthetics – with the stroke of Governor Youngkin’s pen will be legal in Virginia as long as it is labeled ‘hemp,’ added Dr. Adams, a nurse practitioner with substantial expertise in cannabis medicine. During the April veto session, Gov. Youngkin attempted to recriminalize activities involving the possession of two ounces of marijuana by adults via the enactment of an amendment to SB 591. That effort failed with the Senate of Virginia’s refusal to advance the amendment.

DURING THE 2022 VIRGINIA GENERAL ASSEMBLY, REPUBLICAN MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE GENERAL LAWS SUBCOMMITTEE HALTED ANY FURTHER ADVANCEMENT OF SENATE-BACKED LEGISLATION, SB 391, THAT SOUGHT TO INITIATE RETAIL MARIJUANA SALES TO ADULTS BEGINNING THIS SEPTEMBER. There are currently over 50,000 program registrants. At the time of passage, there were an estimated 8,000 applicants still awaiting approval. Source: norml.org

IT IS LEGAL! THE UNITED STATES HAS MADE IT LEGAL! Written by: Mc Dawn Certified Cannabis Therapy Consultant & Student Advisor at The Cannabis Holistic Institute

Cannabis is legal! The United States has made it legal! We can hardly wait for that day! It will become our national green holiday! Before the partying begins, we must do the following: Legalize cannabis at the federal level as a country. Establish federal cannabis laws, policies, and structure. Address diversity and equality, Review and release prisoners who have been charged with cannabis violations. Fair taxation policies. When it comes to cannabis legislation, the US does not need to waste a lot of time for no reason. It can take a cue from the Canadian government, which legalized cannabis in 2018. While Canada has not been perfect, it is doing a respectable job overall. Here is an overview of what has happened in the Canadian market in the past four years. OVERVIEW OF CANADA’S LAST 4 YEARS In 2018, cannabis became legal in Canada. Dispensaries opened and cannabis was being sold to consumers and consumers were demanding more cannabis. There were not enough dispensaries to meet the supply and demand, which led to a shortage of dispensaries in Canada. As a result, more licensed dispensaries opened in Canada, and there became gluttony of dispensaries in some areas. Canadian cannabis growers also overproduced the amount of cannabis needed for the market. The market became flooded with cannabis because of being unable to compete in the market. Price wars began amongst dispensaries, many dispensaries had to close their doors. The Product Cycle theory states that each product consists of four segments. Introduction of the product to market, growth of the product within the market, maturity of the product in the marketplace, and the decline in demand for the product.

17

JULY 2022

thechronicmagazine.com

This is a similar scenario to what Canada went through. Licensure expanded across the country, more in some places and less in others. Production grew faster than demand. Prices declined, and those who were no longer able to compete in the market went out of business. Today, the Canadian market is beginning to find some balance in the market. Canada's government is listening to consumers and working with leaders in the cannabis industry. From its Canadian sister, the US can glean some important lessons regarding the management of cannabis within the country. Adapting Canada's lessons from the past four years to U.S. needs should be the next step. In several states, cannabis has been legalized, and they have faced many of the same challenges as Canada. Some states are only now beginning to legalize cannabis. California's dispensaries have struggled with high rents, taxes, and costs for quite some time. The illegal market has also taken its toll on profits for farmers and corporations. Some have closed their doors. Will federal legalization take place this year? Although I do not possess a crystal ball, I do not think so. There is still quite a bit of work to do for Cannabis to become legal across the country in the next few years. Could you imagine that? day? What would you imagine that day as a nation would be like? That will be an amazing day! When do you think cannabis will be legalized?

The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics says Logan Jones and Eric Brown of Jones Brown Law Firm told medical marijuana businesses to sign consulting agreements with the firm's employees who would act as ghost owners of the company.

Source: kjrh.com

The agreements said the client would pay $3,000 per license per year for the firm to provide a consultant to serve as an Oklahoma resident so the client could get an Oklahoma Medical Marijuana License. “Let these charges send a loud and clear message to anyone engaging in criminal operations in Oklahoma – your actions will not go unnoticed,” O’Connor says. “My office is committed to eradicating these illegal operators and will continue to hold those facilitating illegal marijuana operations accountable. I am grateful for the excellent investigative work by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and their dedication to dismantling criminal organizations.”

During the investigation, OBN agents searched several locations in Oklahoma including Dao K 88 LLC in Garvin County, Evergreen Cannabis LLC in Major County, and Tianz LLC in Mayes County. Authorities seized more than 20,000 marijuana plants during those three searches. Jones and Brown are each charged with one count of conspiracy to cultivate a controlled dangerous substance (marijuana), six counts of offering false or forged instruments for recordation, three counts of cultivation of a controlled dangerous substance (marijuana) and one count of pattern of criminal offenses.

As you all have probably gathered by now, I am all about limiting liability. It is my favorite thing to talk about because the possibilities are endless! Each decision you make on behalf of your business can have a positive or negative impact in the long run. Lawyers and CPAs can help advise you every step of the way. Lawyers, like myself, are awesome and can help with a variety of things regarding the law. Lawyers can draft entity documents, review contracts, interpret the law and apply it to your situation, represent you in a legal matter, and more. But, I, along with most lawyers, are not tax lawyers nor are we certified public accountants. Clients often ask me what the tax consequences of a certain action are, and my answer is always “ask your CPA.” The Internal Revenue Service is a very large and powerful entity. Having a personal individual CPA is something I always recommend and the same is true when it comes to your business. In the medical marijuana industry in Oklahoma, having both a lawyer and a CPA for your company can help limit your liability on all fronts. As you all know, marijuana is still federally illegal which has some steep tax consequences. Thankfully, in the hands of a knowledgeable CPA, you could minimize your tax liability and therefore increase your financial gain! Although limiting tax liability is one great benefit of having a CPA, the list doesn’t end there. A CPA can help with payroll, conduct internal financial audits, and company valuations, predict tax liability and advise on the consequences of your financial transactions. A lawyer can draft entity documents and represent you in a matter, but they are not likely the person you want to be retained for payroll.

HOW MARIJUANA HAS EVOLVED THROUGH THE YEARS.

Cannabis. It has no political agenda. No gender, ethnicity, or religious overture. It’s a plant that happens to carry the answers to many problems… if we know what questions to ask. The question that seems to keep popping up lately is, “Is weed stronger today than what our parents smoked in the 60s and 70s?” That sounds like a winning question. After all, stronger usually means better, eh? While it will most likely go undisputed that the THC levels of today’s cannabis are quite higher, I’m not so sure it answers whether the weed is better. For consumers seeking to relax and heal, the THC level is not necessarily the target focus. In an “Old Weed vs New Weed” interview, Steve-O (from MTV's series Jackass) asked Tommy Chong (one of America’s weed icons) how the weed of today compares to the past. Steve-O seemed surprised to hear that Tommy declared yesterday’s weed as “The best” given the documented strengths of today’s weed. It may be a hard question to answer, but I wonder, “Was it the overall experience that made marijuana in the 60s and 70s the best?” We might not be able to clone the exact weed of the past, but we may be able to create better experiences while consuming cannabis. Furthermore, we may be able to pin down what is keeping some consumers from reaching consistent and optimal effects. First, let’s take a look at how to initiate the experience. Given that I was born in the early 70s, it would be impossible to share from a consumer’s perspective, but I can offer my recollection of the environment and the sense of unity observed during that time. One of the differences that really stands out, is the importance of utilizing the five senses. A majority of consumers who buy flower seem to have bridged the generation gap by using their sense of taste and smell. Some consumers still grind and roll their own weed, further enhancing their experience. If you click on that Lava lamp, burn some incense, and fill the room with Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb,” you might design an evening your parents would be proud of. The second thing that stands in the way of a natural experience with cannabis, is the number of distractions we put up with. Our parents didn’t deal with dings and tones from messages, emails, and social media. They didn’t take selfies of themselves and immediately post them online. We all know that picture post doesn’t end there. It usually leads to an hour of searching or commenting on what others are doing, essentially engaging in brain activity designed for work. That’s great if you are working – not so great when you want to relax or focus on creativity. With all of the distractions, it’s no wonder consumers think they need stronger weed with higher doses to achieve the desired effects. 21

JULY 2022

thechronicmagazine.com

Experiencing cannabis for the purposes of creating, healing, and relaxing can be very rewarding if you take the time to tailor the experience based on your intention. For example, if my intention is to relax, my preparation for that experience is going to include shutting down technology (except for Spotify), lighting my favorite Earthbound incense, and enjoying the warmth and glow of the fire radiating from our chimenea. Reducing distractions and adding sensory elements provide more consistent and enjoyable experiences for me. If my intention is to create, I still add sensory elements, they just might be a little more playful in nature. Regardless of your intentions while consuming cannabis, I encourage you to reduce distractions and experiment with adding sensory elements to see if it enhances the experience. Another thing our parents had going for them was the unity of the stoner community. Before cannabis became a medical or recreational legal option, it seemed those in favor of cannabis wanted everyone to experience the benefits of wellness. Men and Women lobbied for the right together. Classifications of gender and ethnicity didn’t appear to be a focus, however, now that cannabis is referred to as an “industry” many are coming forth with their established attitudes of separation. My experience in the first four years (since legalization in Oklahoma) has been individuals touting their platforms under the guise of marijuana. These personal/political agendas do have their place – it’s just not with cannabis. When attending the Oklahoma Governor’s Minority Business Council event, a few years ago, I was asked,

"What obstacles do minority business owners have?" My response was, “Mindset.” I’ve tried to embrace the empowering thoughts of distinguishing myself as a woman-owned business. But the truth is, the empowerment comes from realizing that I’m fulfilling my soul’s purpose. Nothing else is needed. Maybe that’s another sensory element that added to the experience for our parents? Knowing that they were participating in something the law deemed illegal, their experience was filled with love and unity with kindred spirits. We all love a good rebel story, especially when the rebel turns out to be the hero in the end. We have a lot of rebels to thank for what seems to be incremental changes to the mindset of cannabis, and I believe if we start asking the right questions, cannabis will gain even more momentum.

Aphrodisiacs are a popular way to spice up the bedroom: oysters, chocolate, honey, pomegranate, and red wine all can get your juices flowing but what about cannabis? If you’ve spent time at a couple dispensaries, you might have come across some items like lubricant, body oils, or lotions, all infused with cannabis marketed as an enhancement for ones libido. Is cannabis just added for the concept or is there a real affect on the body when cannabis is involved in your sex life? Can adding cannabis to your bedroom improve your sex life? Cannabis and sex used to be closely associated with each other during the era of peace, love, sex, drugs, and rock and roll. The 1960s set a president for associating sex and cannabis. This is due to hippies and their ideal to embrace both sexual and cultural revolution, they called it “Free Love.” Free Love was a concept that aimed to release people from the shame of sex; people should be able to do it with whoever they want (consensually), whenever they want without any lingering guilt. It was also meant to try and separate the state from sexual love from romantic love. The claimed it was a problem for the people not the government. Scientifically, the National Library of Medicine did a study with 202 participants completing surveys on their experience with using cannabis prior to sex. Of the participants “58.9% said cannabis increased their desire for sex, 73.8% reported increased sexual satisfaction, 74.3% reported an increased sensitivity to touch, 65.7% reported an increased intensity of orgasms, 69.8% said they could relax more during sex, and 50.5% said they were better able to focus.” With these results, one can assume that the majority of people who use cannabis prior to sex untimely have a better experience. An additional study done by the National Library of Medicine focused more heavily on how women’s sexual experiences are affected by cannabis.

thechronicmagazine.com

JULY 2022

24

Of the 373 participants, of the women who reported using marijuana before sex also reported an increase in sex drive, improvement in orgasm, and a decrease in pain. It was concluded that women had a increase by 2.13 of reporting more satisfactory orgasms. For women who frequently used marijuana, whether is was prior to sex or not, also have a higher odd of reporting better orgasms. Overall, using a little cannabis before sexual activity seems to make the orgasm better and more likely. The study concluded stating, “a better understanding of the role of the endocannabinoid system in women is important, because there is a paucity of literature, and it could help lead to development of treatments for female sexual dysfunction.” Some people like Michelle Mendoza, cannabis connoisseur and Head Buyer at Los Angeles’ Sweet Flower, have come to the conclusion that the presence of some terpenes is why mixing cannabis and sexual pleasure is so common and well liked. She told InsideHook,

In addition to this, cannabis is also considered a vasodilator, increasing blood flow, which can add to the sensitivity of certain areas. So with all of the studies, smoking a joint or eating an edible before sex can really help the outcome and may make the overall experience better for all parties. Let’s take a look at other ways cannabis can be used in the bedroom: topicals infused with cannabis. Lube is the most common type of infused product that is sold in dispensaries (more frequent than one may think). A cannabis infused lube typically works by being transdermal. Transdermal topical cannabis products are able to get cannabis into the body directly where it is placed, typically it is recommended to put transdermal cannabis on the wrist, lower abdominal area, or shoulder blade. Using transdermal cannabis on your genitals is just fine and as some of the skin can be thin, it will still soak in and get to work. (Incase you’re thinking about it, yes the vaginal cannal can absorb things into the body. This is proven by birth controls like NuvaRing.) 25

If you are interested in trying to merge cannabis and sex, here are a few popular strain recommendations: Do-Si-Dos, Wedding Cake, LA Confidential, Amnesia Haze, Bubba Kush, Skywalker OG Kush, Blueberry Lambsbreath, Kosher Kush, Harlequin, G13, Granddaddy Purp, Train-wreck, Super Lemon Haze, Animal Cookies, Sour Diesel, and Bubblegum Kush. Each of these strains have their own properties but overall can contribute to an enhanced sexual experience. When trying out cannabis before sex, there are a few things that are good to remember, take it slow, it might even be a good idea to begin with a micro-dose. Also be sure to see if Indica leaning or Sativa leaning strains are best for you, some people find Sativa dominant strains to cause anxiety and that’s the last thing you want to feel before sexual activity. Some find that Indica dominant strains put them to sleep and they no longer have the drive to perform well in the bedroom, so before you just dive in, partake with your partner and talk about what you feel with each strain. By doing this, you and your partner take the pressure off of each other, neither of you should feel like you have to engage in sex after smoking. Another idea is for each of you, if you live separately, to try smoking and engaging in self pleasure to see which strain is good for you. Regardless, it is important to be open and honest with your partner, always talk and listen but ultimately just relax and have some fun!

BUZ

1 Tbsp. Apple Cider Vinegar 2 Tbsp. Canna Olive Oil ¼ tsp. Cayenne Pepper, adjust to your taste ½ tsp. Salt and Black Pepper 1 tsp. Sugar

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat your grill on medium and oil the grates to help prevent the pineapple from sticking. Grill the pineapples until you have some nice browning, maybe 5-10 minutes, make sure to grill both sides. What we are doing here is caramelizing the natural sugar in the pineapple to give it a nice smokey and sweet caramel flavor. 2. Once that is grilled, let it cool and chop it finely and add to the diced peppers(red, green, and jalapeno) and onions. In a separate bowl mix the apple cider vinegar, canna oil, cayenne, sugar, salt and pepper, and lime juice and whisk well. Then pour the mixture over the pineapple, peppers, and onions and lightly toss, now add the cilantro and toss a little more. 3. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed and cover and refrigerate. Refrigerate for at least an hour, I like to for 24 hours to really release the flavors and make sure to toss before serving. Now it's time to dig in and enjoy, it's great with tortilla chips or even on some fish tacos!

LEMON THAI KUSH STRAIN

The Healing Company a.k.a. Heal Billy The good people over at Heal Billy Pot Farms aka The Healing Company have been producing some outstanding, high-quality, sun-grown flowers. This month we are featuring their Lemon Thai Kush strain. The Heal Billy’s are taking it back to Land Race with this timeless classic strain. This strain likely can trace its ancestry back to the Kush Mountains of Afghanistan by way of Lemon Kush, and also to an original Thai landrace Sativa. No one seems to know the exact parentage of Lemon Thai Kush, but the result is a sativa-dominant hybrid you won’t forget. This one’s a hitter folks, Sativa and non-Sativa fans will love this classic strain. The profile is citrus combined with the gas from the Kush lineage and is merged with a sweet, creamy overall nose. The flavor profile matches the amazing aroma of this hard Sativa cross. This is sun-grown done right. THE WORLD OF CANNABINOIDS HEALTH & WELLNESS Can You Really Drink Cannabis Juice?

Did you know that you can drink the juiced leaves of cannabis and it's a superfood. I have been well aware of that starting over a decade ago when I started juicing leaves for health and wellness benefits. Cannabis is an incredibly unique plant that contains over 400 different chemical compounds. The number of vitamins, essential oils, and acids found in cannabis has leading experts calling cannabis a “dietary essential.” Cannabis is a particularly special plant in the world of nutrition because the herb contains extremely high concentrations of cannabinoid acids. Turns out, these acids are incredibly important for a human basic cell function. Two of the primary cannabinoid acids that have been studied thus far are THCa and CBDa. When you heat these acids via smoking, vaping, or cooking cannabis you break them down into slightly different chemicals. Specifically, some degrade them into psychoactive THC and cannabinoid CBD. The process of converting these cannabinoid acids into their “active” form is known as decarboxylation, or “decarbing.” Active THC and CBD have their share of benefits, but the one major downside to decarbing is that your body can only handle small amounts of these now-activated cannabinoids. When you eat raw cannabis, your body is able to process extremely large amounts of THCa and CBDa without issue. Your body then converts these acids into the nutrients it needs via your own metabolism. Consuming these cannabinoid acids is important because they help your cells communicate with each other via the endocannabinoid system. Consuming more cannabinoid acids may be the key to the prevention of chronic diseases caused by endocannabinoid deficiencies. Endocannabinoid deficiencies are thought to play a major role in the development of medical conditions like: Anti-inflammatory properties Anti-diabetic properties Anti-ischemic properties 33

by Sarah Prater In 1994 there was a unique sound being born out of Ocean Beach, California by a couple of childhood friends Miles Doughty and Kyle McDonald. Their sound would eventually catch the ear of Sublime Frontman Bradley Nowell and sign them while they were still in Highschool to Skunk Records. It was then that Slightly Stoopid was born. The band saw success early and has played with some of the biggest names in music like Sublime, Dave Matthews Band, The Roots, and even Snoop Dogg. Slightly Stoopid has not only an amazing sound but the group is fun to talk to. They are not only “down to earth” but they are still just as excited to play today as they were way back in ‘94. When we caught up with Miles and the band they were currently on their Summer Traditions 2022 Tour with Pepper, Common Kings, Fortunate Youth, and The Elovaters. thechronicmagazine.com

Slightly Stoopid Interview by Sarah Prater

So, what are you guys up to right now? In the studio right now, working on a few new songs, kinda gearing up for the summer tour. We have a killer lineup for our summer tour. We are good friends with everyone in the lineup, Common Kings, Fortunate Youth, Pepper, it’s going to be great, with a 30-city tour around the country. It’s been a long time coming, so we are all super pumped! We got to do a few shows, a few big outdoor shows since they’ve been letting everyone do shows again, so with this summer I just like the energy is going to explode.

Where are you guys looking forward to playing at the most? Well really just looking forward to everywhere. There’s something good about each town we’ve been in but I always love playing at Red Rocks, Coco beach in Florida, Charleston in South Carolina, and really so many good spots to name. Everywhere where there’s an outdoor show the energy is just incredible. When you go to northeastern or northwest places that deal with cold weather and super cold winter months, it’s like their energy just comes out and they all come alive, sweating it with us and just making it’s such a better time for us and everyone else, the whole band really feed off that too. This summer we have a lot of collaborations with all our friends, it just turns into a huge tailgate party for us really with musicians, friends, family, and fans. We have Don Carlos and Charley Tune-Up from Jurassic 5 along with Marlin Asher and a few other guests to play some shows with us.

Yeah, you guys will be playing an outdoor theatre here in OKC, the Zoo Amphitheater. We are super excited about that! Oh yeah, I saw that on the lineup and I think that will be our first time playing there, so we are really excited to get there and play at a new place with new energy. 39

So aside from all your music, shows, and collaborations, what are you excited about in life right now? We are all at the age where we have families now, so when we aren’t on the road it’s nice to be home, be a dad, and enjoy that side of life. Ya know, when you’re a musician, you dedicate a lot of your life to being on the road so that was one silver lining of being off the road for a couple of years. We got to spend a lot of time with our families. But we are ready to get back on the road and hang out and go play with our touring family. Music is the like the ultimate drug of life, not just for the people listening to it, but for the people playing it too. It feels so incredible and can’t wait to get back to it full-time.

If you don’t mind me asking and if you don’t mind sharing as well when you are traveling and away from your family, do you have any good relationship advice for keeping up with your relationship and family? I think for me now, talking every day. I go home every Monday to spend a couple of days with them, and I think that the right thing to do to maintain a relationship and a good family is to see them, so I can still be a part of their lives. I am blessed that we are able to do that and I think talking to them as much as you can is important. As we get older, we are definitely putting effort into touring smarter, just so we can maximize time with our family while maximizing time on the road as well.

Well, thank you so much for sharing that! I’d like to know some more interesting things about you to share with fans, like what is your favorite food? Do you have a favorite restaurant or dish you like to cook? Oh, my favorite food is Mexican, we have the BEST taco shops here in San Diego on the entire planet. There is nothing like it and we all really wish we could find something like it around the country when you’re on the road ya know. When we pull into town, we hit our favorite spots, it's like our go-to always. Like other places try, but San Diego has the best carne asada burritos. My recommendations would be to hit up Roberto’s or Niko’s. It is the first thing we do when getting off the bus or plane when we get home. When on the road you just eat what you can, we get catering sometimes. I do like trying out new spots when out of the road. I’m pretty much on the see-food diet, I see food and I eat it all. thechronicmagazine.com

Okay, okay so we know what you guys eating, so what are you drinking on? Alcoholic or nonalcoholic. Yeah, it’s alcohol I like a club soda, vodka, and lemon or lime, that’s all I really need. My buddy started this vodka company, Uncle Ed’s Damn Good Vodka, he stocks us up when we go out on the road. We have it on the bus and at our houses. I also like Modelos and definitely stay hydrated with water.

Alright, so we got the food and drink order down, what are you smoking on? Well myself, I am an OG Kush fan, that’s always my go-to. We have our own Caliman Kush, which is the super bomb. We also have our Stoopid Fruits, a Sativa strain, which is also really good. But the OG has always been my favorite, I’ll get some that are so good it will literally bring a tear to anyone’s eyes. Always keep a clean glass bong around for a nice rip. We also have this preroll called Stoopid Hammerhead, with Hammerhead prerolls, and it's honestly a knockout punch dipped in kief with OG kush flower.

Awesome! You already answered the other question I had, what is your favorite way to smoke/consume, as you just said flower, out of glass bong. So you kind of already mentioned the products you just said, but can you tell us a little more about the cannabis company you guys have now? 43

JULY 2022

thechronicmagazine.com

Yeah, Stoopid Organics, we are still branching and expanding that but right now we have seeds, CBD, those strains Stoopid Fruits, Caliman Kush, Hammerhead prerolls, but it’s all going so good right now. I just love the name of the company too, it fits so well. Another cool thing, is we’ve got to meet so many rad people along the way with this company. I was just with B Real from Cypresshill- one of the godfathers of the weed movement, it’s pretty cool to be a part of that journey as well.

May I ask, what is your personal opinion and thoughts on cannabis, like what else do you like about it, besides of course the high! (ha-ha). Honestly, I’ve been smoking weed my whole life. It’s just great when you’re creating, as a musician I’ve smoked ever since I’ve been making music. It definitely has medical benefits too. I’ve had friends in critical conditions from certain elements where the CBD and other functions of the plant have just brought peace to them rather than the pharmaceuticals with sometimes all those unwanted side effects. With THC and CBD, plus other things within the plant, and all that together can save and heal people, with no side effects. Where our products don’t have those side effects and so many other cannabis products out there. It’s just insane that the medical field hasn’t allowed it to be published and pushed more just because of the fact they hate it AND it works.

Cannabis has come so much further though, not as many people turning up their noses to it. I love to buy from local growers who put so much love into their work, plus help keep the local guy fed.

Another question to Segway into, you mentioned using cannabis for your creative process, is there anything else you do for your process? Oh no, not really. I’ve been playing music for so long; I don’t ever try to force creativity. Usually, I just get this feeling when it's time, to pick up the phone, open a voice memo to sing or play whatever it is, come into the studio, start getting in that right mindset, and just hit record. That’s what works best for me, just never really forcing things and letting the vibe going.

As a musician, what are you most proud of, like a certain song, collaboration, or project? One of the coolest things for me was playing with Bob Weir, of the Grateful Dead, because of what they’ve done for music, their touring platform, that really catapulted everyone else to that way of touring. They’ve done so much for music, people, and rock and roll in general. I also played in his studio, I just remember looking over at him, thinking ‘holy shit this is the coolest thing ever. Kyle and I grew up together in this band, we’ve been touring all over, getting to do the coolest shit since we were teenagers, then ya know in a blink of an eye, it’s like where did the time go?!

Then thinking back on all of our experiences and getting to meet him (Bob Weir), it’s just like wow what a cool memory.

Yeah, you and Kyle growing up together, being friends for so long, that’s actually pretty rare for people to stay friends that long. I think that really says a lot about you guys and all the things you two have grown through, literally through and on so many stages of life! Kyle and I have been friends longer than most people can tolerate their own family members. It’s been awesome, literally since diapers. We both have our own styles, visions, and personalities. And that’s one thing about going to one of our shows, we have so many different styles that we switch back and forth from guitar to bass. It’s so much fun to do this my best friend, it’s like living the best dream in real life.

I don’t doubt you guys have been through many things together. If you could go back and tell your younger selves or even any advice to fans out there, what would it be? Go for it, keep chasing your dreams. You can’t be scared of fears, you have to face them. And you can’t be afraid of failure. We’ve played a million shows, in the beginning, there was nobody there in the crowd, maybe a few people, or shows without security or even a bartender.

It was just a slow time in the beginning. There were so many times where it felt like we could have just said ‘ah let’s forget it and gave up, but we didn’t. We never doubted that the harder we tried the more we would succeed. We, Kyle and I started the band when were 15 and 16 years old, the rest is history. We’ve played from all the shitholes to the greatest places now. Those hard moments are what make our success feel so awesome. Even though the hardest moment you laugh your way through or figure it out. Now looking back at those times your ‘oh shit, whew, it wasn’t as bad it seemed then’. That is the mantra of life, you gotta chase your dreams, don’t give up on yourself, and always believe in yourself, even when others don’t. Sometimes we’d only make like $50 bucks, enough to get us to the next town, then get paid another $50 bucks to get us on to the next. Back then gas was like $1 (laughing). All those moments lead us here, we’ll never take those moments for granted.

Okay, I have one last and kind of weird question for you. What is something you haven’t done, that you want to do, or a place you haven’t been? Well, that’s a tough one, we’ve been so many places it’s hard to say or pick somewhere we haven’t been. I’m stumped… let's think about that one. Actually, ya know, swimming with dolphins does sound nice, I haven’t done that yet (laughing). I’ve also always wanted to learn how to ski, I’ve snowboarded but haven’t skied yet.

CAN MARIJUANA USE DURING AND AFTER PREGNANCY HARM THE BABY?

by Chynna Jasmine Pearson

For many people, cannabis is medicine they use to numb pain from a multitude of physical and mental ailments. It is also well known that sometimes pregnancy can be extremely painful for nine months. Back pain, abdominal and leg cramps, dental pain, heartburn, pinched nerves, headache, and swollen feet are only some of the possible symptoms that one can experience while pregnant. With all these pains, is it possible to use cannabis while pregnant without harming the baby?

Additionally, smoke and second-hand smoke are harmful to both you and the baby, cigarettes, and cannabis. Of the research that has been done, it can be concluded that marijuana causes a higher risk for lower birth weight and abnormal neurological development. As the baby develops, “studies suggest that marijuana use by persons during pregnancy could be linked to problems with attention, memory, problemsolving skills, and behavior in their children later in life.”

According to the CDC,

It is important to note that there has been no human research on cannabis and miscarriages but in animal studies, there have been data that suggested early use may contribute to them. The National Institute on Drug Abuse has seen that the chance of having a stillbirth grows by over two percent, while that might not be much it is enough to warrant a pause before using marijuana while pregnant. Although it has been recorded that some dispensaries recommend some of their products as anti-nausea medication.

“marijuana use during pregnancy can be harmful to your baby’s health. The chemicals in marijuana (in particular, THC) pass through your system to your baby and may harm your baby’s development.” They go on to explain that there is not a lot of research that has been done on the effects of marijuana use during pregnancy, but it is still not recommended to partake while pregnant. 47

JULY 2022

thechronicmagazine.com

What about after the baby is born? Will cannabis be present in your breast milk and harm the baby? The CDC says, “The health effects of a breastfeeding person’s use of marijuana on their infant or baby are not yet fully known. We do know that chemicals from marijuana can be passed to a baby through breast milk. THC is stored in body fat and is slowly released over time, meaning a baby could still be exposed even after a person has stopped using marijuana. Thus, persons who are breastfeeding are encouraged to avoid all marijuana use”. Breast milk can be easily influenced by what you eat and drink, for example drinking alcohol while breastfeeding can make the milk come out alcoholic as well (food allergens come through the same way). This could be the case for THC and CBD getting through to the baby.

Speaking of CBD, experts even say not to try using it during pregnancy either even though it isn’t psychoactive. Another reason not to use cannabis during pregnancy is that you can be intaking other dangerous ingredients like pesticides, heavy metals, bacteria, and fungus, all of which can be potentially harmful to the baby. For now, until there is more conclusive research it is simply a better idea to avoid it and use pain killers that are recommended for pregnancy, you could even still go natural as long as the research suggests the baby will be fine. Basically, it’s better to be safe than sorry. However, two years ago Columbia University and its Department of Psychiatry completed a decades-long study on cannabis and pregnancy. They concluded that

“PRENATAL CANNABIS EXPOSURE DOES NOT LEAD TO COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENTS.” According to their study, there are few actually recorded effects, positive or negative. While there are limitations in research and literature on this subject there are still areas that seem to lead us to the conclusion that cannabis may be safer during pregnancy than we think. Regardless of these findings, if you choose to use cannabis during your pregnancy it may be helpful to do your own research before you make a concrete decision. Always take information with a grain of salt as there is still so little clinical research that has been done on humans and in general. For now, the general consensus is not to use cannabis during your pregnancy or while breastfeeding. The amount of purported cannabis use during pregnancy is low, as is the count of those that tested positive for cannabis without reporting use. It is still very much a minority as most people opt for sober and/or all-natural pregnancies. If you are pregnant or planning to be pregnant, we at Chronic wish you the best! Whatever you plan to do, be safe and do your research.

This address will help you to understand one mode of transportation that can be a recurring agent of wellness and change for the mind…that mode is psilocybin mushroom. Psilocybin mushrooms are a fungus known as psychedelics that when ingested promote positive neurological activity. This activity has been proven to cause lasting changes in the brain’s ability to repair itself, learn and grow, even after significant trauma. Psychedelic therapy studies on mental health and substance abuse disruptions have been conducted to discover the efficacy of such treatments. Institutions such as the National Institute of Health (NIH) have several recently published articles providing scientific backing for said studies. These same studies provide some evidence that beats out traditional western psychiatric medication standards being the most beneficial when compared to psychedelics. From disorders on a grand scale to even the small disruptions psilocybin mushrooms, and other psychedelics, can help improve brain function in a very effective way. Let’s continue the conversation! 59

There are several parts to psilocybin that make up the whole of the experience. Follow the flow to understand how psilocybin can be therapeutically beneficial for the brain:

The Healing Science of Psilocybin What is psilocybin (and what is psilocin!)? Psilocybin is a hallucinogenic substance that occurs organically, including in over 200 species of mushrooms. One of the most well known mushrooms is psilocybe cubensis, colloquially known as “gold caps” or “golden teachers”, amongst other names. The “golden” comes from the cap color of the fungus, while the “teacher” part refers to the subsequent spiritual and mental insights often recalled after a psychedelic “trip”. Psilocybin is a tryptamine “triptamine” alkaloid molecule (derived from the amino acid tryptophan), and belongs to the indoleamine family of neurotransmitters. The indoleamine molecules are similar in structure and function; examples include serotonin and melatonin. The regulation or dysregulation of these biochemicals is what determines things like mood and behavior. Random cool fact: Indoleamines are believed to be produced in the pineal gland.

In Kemetic science and spirituality, the pineal gland is known to be a central location for elevated thought and enlightenment! Psilocin is a derivative of psilocybin and the true reactive agent that produces the healing changes in the brain. Organic mechanisms in the body utilize and synthesize substances according to what the body needs. When the body ingests psilocybin mushrooms, psilocybin changes into psilocin by way of a chemical process called dephosphorylation. This means that the phosphate group attached to psilocybin is removed through chemical mechanisms.

Reconsidering the social profile of Psilocybin The brain is the operator of the body, sending messages throughout an entire system in a matter of less than a second. Although it is possible to survive outside of a homeostatic rhythm, it is not ideal.

Every moment considered is a moment that can be spent applying better solutions for the body and brain. The two minutes it takes for an oxygen-deficient brain to permanently alter a life are just as vital as the time it takes psilocybin to interact with the brain and leave its lasting impression. Disruptions such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD (all affected by dysregulation of serotonin production in the body, amongst other chemical and regional dysfunctions) have been studied under psilocybin therapy. The effects are almost always reported positively. The natural profile of this healing agent suggests that other holistic methods can be applied to further support the brain-changing uptick of psilocybin. Psilocybin, slid in between music therapy, meditation, healing in nature are the “hippy” methods from which the collective has been playfully, but intentionally, stirred away. We could argue about why maybe even argue against labproduced medications. but that would not be helpful. It’s not about discouraging traditional medication methods, things work differently for everyone; the information about psilocybin is more about advocacy!

While medications are effective in the management of symptoms of neurological disruptions for some, what the term therapy truly calls for is the deeper healing of these disruptions. Not everyone will want to experience psychedelic healing, but those that can benefit from it should know about their options. Accessibility starts with information. True the documented scientific reviews of psilocybin aren’t as extensive as its history of it would suggest, but the evidence for the case is not altogether absent. If we can rely on ancient texts to account for the wars of history and teach us how humans communicated effectively before technology, we can also count on those same texts to teach us how humans have been thriving and healing mentally. Psilocybin has shown up in many texts as an entheogen—a method by which the mushroom is consumed to induce an elevated religious or spiritual experience—to get closer to god. In their version of god, many people find peace, happiness and healing. The drawings and accounts of these entheogenic experiences line up with the ideology behind some modern therapy methods today, such as narcotics anonymous, which encourages attendees to find faith as part of its healing principles. Psychedelics have been cited as healing agents for alcohol disorders as well. The likelihood of these methods crossing is not uncanny but seems more destined in the future as the minds of the people expand beyond what we have already been accustomed to in this age.

Resting the casePsilocybin as a viable option Psilocybin therapy makes a full circle in the world of healing, naturally, biologically and spiritually. Its methodology is positive and easy to establish in a controlled environment. As the collective advances, it is important to remember that elevation does not have to be invasive or drastic. There is nothing new under the sun. It’s time to take it back to nature and allow what has already existed to become functional and in synchrony with human healing and evolution. thechronicmagazine.com
