SUSTAINABILITY

& The Laws that Make Sustainability Hard to Achieve

annabis is a plant that can save the planet; however, many laws associated with cannabis seem to do more harm than good. Cannabis should be sustainable… right? But far too many times, something as simple as buying a pre-roll, can cause harm to the environment. It’s no secret that plastic harms, and yet the laws associated with cannabis create the need to use plastic, almost making it a harmful purchase. Forbes says:

“THANKS TO A DECADESLONG ASSOCIATION WITH “HIPPIES” AND “TREEHUGGERS,” CANNABIS HAS LARGELY BEEN CONSIDERED A GREEN (NO PUN INTENDED) INDUSTRY BY THE MASSES. MANY MAY NOT REALIZE THAT CANNABIS HAS NEVER REALLY BEEN A SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRY, AND WITH THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF CANNABIS, THINGS HAVE CONTINUED TO MOVE IN THE WRONG DIRECTION.”

WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY? Sustainability is: meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The U.S, in cannabis and everywhere, isn’t fulfilling this meaning. We are a wasteful country and we are causing irreversible harm. While cannabis and hemp can help with an overall sustainable world, the laws and regulations tied to their prohibition and their legality, make this close to impossible. In all pillars of sustainability: human, social, economic, and environmental- we are failing.

CANNABIS, HEMP, SUSTAINABILITY, AND CLIMATE CHANGE Cannabis-hemp is a very sustainable crop. The Cannabis Industry Journal says: “As a standalone item, the cannabis plant is very environmentally friendly.

This is particularly true when it comes to hemp, a variety of the cannabis plant with a huge range of environmental benefits. An extremely versatile and robust crop, hemp uses far less land and water than other common crops and even captures carbon dioxide and regenerates soil. Approximately 20,000 products can be made from its seed, fiber, and flower, from biodegradable plastics to food supplements, meaning all in all – it is an environmentally and economically sustainable crop.” With these facts, the government should be growing cannabis in national parks and forests, on the side of the road, and in all botanical gardens. But the laws are set up in a way that this can’t happen. As quickly as the government moved on vaccines, they should’ve moved on hemp and hemp education to truly save us. Earth is not happy and climate change is real. A scientist at Stanford University said: “Climate change is on pace to occur 10 times faster than any change recorded in the past 65 million years.”

Jane Fonda, legendary actress and climate change activist say: “Today, the climate crisis requires collective action on a scale that humanity has never accomplished, and in the face of those odds a sense of hopelessness may occasionally descend. But the antidote to that feeling is to do something. The question is: what? Changing individual lifestyle choices like giving up meat and getting rid of single-use plastic won’t cut it when time is not on our side. We need to go further, faster. Instead of changing straws and lightbulbs, we need to focus on changing policy and politicians.” To be more sustainable in cannabis, regulations/laws have to change. Rolling Stone Magazine says in their headline: “Cannabis is a climate villain, thanks to federal prohibition.”

this created the situation we have today of state-by-state legalization, which creates sustainability issues in cannabis cultivation for example. Places like rainy and moldy Washington state have to grow their own cannabis. This may be cool in the summer when outdoor grows/cultivations can be successful, but when it’s raining and cold for most of the year, indoor cultivation is the sought out way. But indoor cultivation isn’t friendly to the environment. Indoor cultivation is a way to grow cannabis, which attempts to mimic the outdoor environment. Trying to create an outdoor illusion, indoors, is a big use of energy that isn’t sustainable. The Journal of Cannabis Research breaks down the ways that indoor cultivation causes harm:

HOW CANNABIS REGULATIONS/ LAWS “Studies found out that cannabis plants emit a significant amount of biogenic MAKE CANNABIS NON-SUSTAINABLE The federal government still holds Marijuana on Schedule I,

9

JANUARY 2022 thechronicmagazine.com

volatile organic compounds, which could cause indoor air quality issues. Indoor cannabis cultivation is energy-consuming, mainly due to heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting.

Energy consumption leads to greenhouse gas emissions.” Greenhouse gas emissions from human activities strengthen the greenhouse effect. And the greenhouse effect is what causes climate change. Climate change is why our weather and temperatures have been a hot mess for years and getting worse. Another way that laws and regulations tied to cannabis cultivation contribute to nonsustainability in the cannabis industrydisposing of plants. This happens because the government says they are of no value and can’t be used. Forbes makes a point: “After harvest, cannabis plants need to be disposed of. To legally dispose of cannabis plants, cannabis growers first need to make the waste unrecognizable, which requires them to create a 50-50 mix of cannabis waste to non-cannabis waste.” It’s not just cannabis cultivation though, as stated above, packaging contributes to non-sustainability in cannabis. Both of which are governed by laws/regulations.

TIPS FOR CREATING A SUSTAINABLE CANNABIS BRAND Laws and regulations may not allow for change, but change is definitely coming! So, here’s how cannabis brands can be/become more sustainable: Water Conversation by going hydro. Multiple sources state that hydroponic and aeroponic cultivation is more sustainable way to cultivate cannabis. Lighting for indoor cultivation: LED and solar lighting is much better. LED converts electricity to light and solar converts light to electricity. Regenerative farming to increase biodiversity which enhances ecosystem services. Waste disposal, but with the legal way in place is very unsustainable so, there are groups like GAIACA working on changing the laws tied to how cultivators dispose of waste. As stated multiple times, packaging, using plastic isn’t sustainable. Using recycled packaging and hemp packaging is a sustainable way.

FINAL THOUGHTS Any business can incorporate sustainable practices, here are a few: Make sustainability a core principle of your business Do research Innovate Incorporate diverse leadership Set holistic visions Be willing to consistently improve and be accountable.

Boston City gives a boost to cannabis entrepreneurs

Why cannabis is not legal in Kentucky, and how that could change?

New Mexico County Prepares for Recreational Cannabis

Boston’s aspiring cannabis entrepreneurs can get a leg up thanks to a collaboration between the city and local cannabis advocates. Mayor Michelle Wu announced details of Boston Cannabiz 101, which is a series of free informational sessions on the cannabis industry and entrepreneurship. The January program, a city collaboration with the Core Empowerment Social Justice Cannabis Museum in Jamaica Plain, is aimed at entrepreneurs interested in running a cannabis business in Boston. The hope, officials said, is to increase the number of equityowned cannabis business licensees and applicants in the city. Stoner's by SARAH PRATER

ETIQUETTE

What is stoner etiquette? It’s basically the unwritten social rules for when a group of stoners get together and get stoned! With cannabis becoming legalized in some form across the states there may be plenty of new smokers in this community. So, let’s go over some stoner etiquette before your next smoke sesh. 1. First and foremost, if you are not feeling well, actively sick, or think you might be sick, DO NOT smoke or share mouthpieces with others. This is easier said than done for sure, but a good solution is to bring your own piece to smoke out of if you have FOMO that bad. 2. Smoking cannabis is a great way to hang out and bond with others, but don’t pressure others to consume if they don’t want to. Everyone should respect someone’s choice to not consume. Different methods of consumption with different strains and other factors can play into how cannabis will affect someone. Also, putting unnecessary pressure and attention onto someone can kill the vibe of the sesh. Don’t be a vibe killer. 3. Puff, puff, PASS. Two hits off the joint or blunt then pass it. Don’t get on a soapbox or start telling a story and forget to pass it. 4. After your puff, puff, and you're ready to pass it, always remember: Left is the law. Passing to the left has been well known around stoner circles for decades and is historically rooted in Rastafarian culture. 5. A couple of other things worth mentioning when passing, ash before you pass and don’t pass a cashed bowl. 6. Corner the bowl. When sharing bowls with a group don’t torch the whole bowl, light the corner, and pass it on. 7. You pack it or roll it, you spark it. Hard rule. It's common courtesy whoever puts in the work should get the pleasure of lighting it up. 8. Guests get greens. This is an exception to the rule mentioned above, and although not a hard rule, it is a good way to make guests feel welcomed. 9. Lastly, be aware and responsible. If children or pets are around, keep your stash out of reach. That’s enough rules. Remember these tips and you will surely be invited back to the next smoke sesh.

tarting your Cannabis company can be difficult. You may be asking yourself, where do I even begin? Here is a brief overview to help get you started. Decide how to structure your company. Apply to the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Association (OMMA) for the proper licensing. Continue to comply with the laws of the State of Oklahoma and the regulations of the OMMA. Determining your company structure is the most important step because you are the only one looking out for your liability and limiting it should be your highest priority. You may operate as a sole proprietor or a general partnership but the risk to you, as an individual, is enormous and unnecessary. Corporations. A corporation is an entity in which individuals hold shares of stock that directly correlate to ownership. To establish a corporation, you must file Articles of Incorporation with the Oklahoma Secretary of State (OK SOS), create bylaws, which will function as the rules for your company, and conduct annual meetings. Corporations provide limited liability protection to their shareholders, directors, and officers when acting on behalf of the corporation. Unfortunately, corporations are subject to double taxation which can be burdensome on a new company. Partnerships. There are general partnerships (not good), limited liability partnerships (LLP)(pretty good), and a limited liability limited partnership (LLLP)(great). An LLP requires a filing with the OK SOS and payment of a security bond. The LLP must consist of at least one general partner and one limited partner. The general partner will be responsible for the day-to-day operation and will not be afforded limited liability protection. In an LLLP, the same filing requirements exist, but here, the general partner is afforded limited liability protection, just like the limited partner. All partnerships benefit from one layer, flow-through, taxation. Limited liability companies (LLC). LLCs are simple and phenomenal. You must file Articles of Organization with the OK SOS and pay a filing fee, nothing more is required to start your LLC. Creating an Operating Agreement is always a good idea and can serve as your ownership disclosure documentation for the OMMA. All members of an LLC, regardless of their ownership interest, are afforded limited liability protection. An LLC can sue, be sued, take a loan, and enter a contract. By default, LLCs benefit from one layer, flow-through, taxation. Each company is different but applying for your OMMA business license will be nearly identical for any company structure.

hether you have chosen to explore the benefits of cannabis yourself or if you have chosen to adopt someone else’s experience (and therefore their mindset) – it makes a big difference in how you explain the plant to your child. It is my opinion that parents should not give up their power to propaganda-driven sources, but retain that power through education. There are multiple mindsets about cannabis. The two most common are medicinal and recreational. If you look up the cultivars (aka strains) for the cannabinoid and the terpene profiles that have been proven to help ailments before going into the dispensary, you most likely have a medical mindset when it comes to consuming cannabis. If you choose products based on their smell or flavor, that is still considered medicinal, because it is your body telling you what will work for you.

19 JANUARY 2022 thechronicmagazine.com

If your mindset is recreational, you are less bound by cannabinoids, terpenes, and dosages – but may find it harder to justify it to your child. Overall, I recommend a factual explanation of the plant. Explain to your child that the plant has healing properties. If they need visuals of how plants can heal, show them how an aloe vera plant heals a sunburn or how lavender helps them relax or sleep. Explain to them that cannabis works in similar ways yet requires more research to figure out how much each patient can take, and also explain that like regular medicine, if taken incorrectly, it will make us sick. If your child needs further explanation of the upsides of cannabis, biographical programs like Mount Kush, can help unfold the benefits of the plant for children with ailments (i.e., Palsy, seizures, or Chrone’s).

These types of programs will also explain the difficulties of the industry being able to provide treatments based on current laws. Don’t forget to mention that your state requires a medical license to consume, if that is the case. One parent explained to her child,

“. . . it helps us sleep better and I’d prefer not to take any kind of pills.” The mother mentioned that she has seen too many people get addicted to prescription pills and other drugs which destroy their lives.

Like other mothers I spoke to, her experience with cannabis effects doesn’t change her as a mother and when she first obtained her medical marijuana license, she explained her medicinal intent to her children and they seemed to be very receptive. Like adults, children usually handle the truth brilliantly. Living in Oklahoma, all consumption should be medicinal. However, for those of you who

“grow a little out by the fence,” you might have questions coming to you from a different angle. Your child may wonder if you are sick or become concerned that you are breaking the law because of something they have heard. As a former teacher and school counselor, I know the curriculum and message that was used during my tenure and for those of you who lived out the Reagan years remember all too well Nancy’s war on drugs and the image of our brains on drugs.

21 JANUARY 2022 thechronicmagazine.com

However, as an educator, I saw the advantages of recess and the benefits of releasing the frustrations that come from learning or being cooped up, and like children and recess, cannabis has the potential to give the adult consumer a similar pause in their day.One user stated,

“I consume cannabis to give myself a break… a break from the thoughts that can lead to stress… a break from the self-doubt that keeps me from pursuing my dreams… or an opportunity to open parts of my brain that I don’t get a chance to use very often - which is usually the creative side that make me feel energized. "

This may sound like the definition of recreational, but in the field of medicine, it has become important (or should be important) to treat the whole person and not just pills for symptoms. With that said, do not expect children to believe your “medical” explanation, if they witness you consuming irresponsibly. I do have one more option. You could rely on the school system to explain cannabis to your child. This is not necessarily a bad option, but remember to always investigate who is responsible for the information being disseminated to your child through the school district. Please note, the curriculum on prescribed and non-prescribed drugs may not have changed with the legalization of cannabis. According to sources in the Oklahoma school system, the curriculum has not changed. When asked about the curriculum, one assistant principal states, “The word cannabis is not used; marijuana is used and it is referred to as a plant that is similar to tobacco and “smoked” in the same manner. There is no mention of gummies, pill forms, or topical forms."

She is aware that students bring up questions about medical cannabis during Guidance classes, however, it seems the topic of discussion is swift and to me would likely leave the students left wanting for more information. It is my opinion as a former educator and counselor that schools are not equipped to educate our children on the variables of cannabis. And they should not be expected to. It is the consumers responsibility to know and educate themselves on the intricacies related to cannabis and should seek out experts in the field if more information is needed. Do not let the only education your child receive on the topic of cannabis be during the yearly Red Ribbon Week in October.

Is there a universal way to explain cannabis to your children? The answer is no. There are very seldom universals in the world, especially in the world of a child. Your child exists in a world with a lot of external constraints and providing children with the tools necessary to explain your cannabis consumption to others will only assist with their confidence when they encounter different opinions on the subject. thechronicmagazine.com

Marijuana High Tranquility by Chynna Pearson

T

he mind and body have been studied extensively both together and separately. In most cases, people believe that the mind and body need to work in harmony with each other to be healthy and at peace. At this current time, more and more people have been feeling “out of whack” due to the pandemic and its lingering effects on our lives. When you don’t feel all the way like yourself it can be difficult to go about your daily life. Some people (and if you’re reading this you may be one of them) use marijuana to quell these feelings and bring the mind and body back into harmony with each other. But, why is marijuana a common choice for these feelings? Why does marijuana cause such a feeling of zen or tranquility in the many people who use it? Let’s look into it together from different perspectives like scientifically, spiritually, and casually. Beginning with how science views this mind and body relationship, we have to first briefly go over how exactly marijuana interacts with us once it’s been ingested. Marijuana or cannabis is packed full of cannabinoids. Dr. Ananya Mandal says cannabinoids are

are naturally occurring compounds found in cannabis. Of over 480 different compounds present in the plant, only around 66 are termed cannabinoids. Because there are so many cannabinoids that are separated by class as well. The most commonly known of them all are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD (cannabidiol), and CBN (cannabinol). When inside the body Dr. Mandal explains they

exert their effects by interacting with specific cannabinoid receptors present on the surface of cells. When used correctly (since each person is different) marijuana can be used to treat both mental and physical illnesses. According to WebMD, “medical marijuana can help treat a number of conditions including Alzheimer's disease, appetite loss, cancer, Crohn's disease, eating disorders, epilepsy, glaucoma, muscle spasms, nausea, chronic pain, seizures, cachexia, diseases that affect the immune system, and multiple mental health conditions.” [Side note: Did you know that nearly two-thirds of Americans, conservative and liberal alike, now feel that cannabis should be legalized? This may be due to the overwhelming evidence of how helpful it can be and that it is much less addictive than opiates like oxycodone and methadone.]

27 JANUARY 2022 thechronicmagazine.com

At the moment, the way we view cannabis is changing. There used to be stark differences between Indica strains (typically seen as a body high) and Sativa strains (typically seen as a mind high). Now, there has been so much crossed breeding and such that the distinctions of Indica versus Sativa are becoming somewhat obsolete. However, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t certain strains that still can be put into those “categories.” It all depends on the terpenes inside the strain. These terpenes each carry different effects; for example, Limonene is known for giving users an uplifting feeling, Myrcene typically gives the effect of relaxation, Phytol is for sedation, and Sabinene can aid in digestion. Each of these can be attributed to the classic effects of Sativa or Indica. Now, we can dive into the spiritual side of how marijuana can lead to the relaxation of the mind and body. When talking of the spiritual side of marijuana it would be wrong not to mention the many religions that use marijuana in their practices. The main religions to cover would be Hinduism, Rastafarianism, and Christianity. The Massachusetts Cannabis Reform Coalition (MassCann) says that, in Hinduism, “religious ceremonies as early as 1000 BCE. The plant has been consumed in a ritual observing the goddess Shiva. Also, during the festival of Holi, the plant is consumed in a religious drink called bhang.” While Hinduism is a very widespread religion, Rastafarianism may be the most commonly associated religion with marijuana as it is the most modern. MassCann notes that, “Bob Marley, a famous supporter of Rastafarianism explained cannabis as a symbol of religious freedom in his popular quote.

‘THE MORE MEN SMOKE HERB, THE MORE BABYLON FALLS.’ Babylon is seen as an oppressive government that limits religious freedom.” They continued to say, “In Christianity and Judaism, the “holy anointing oil” mentioned by the Old Testament had cannabis as one of the main ingredients.” Cannabis has been intertwined in many religions and is deeply ingrained in spirituality. Additionally, while researching the use of cannabis in religions, there is also a type of religion or spirituality called cantheism. Cantheism is the idea that any and all attitudes towards the cannabis plant as a religious experience. This is to means that if one believes in cantheism, they believe there is an inherent religious interaction between the user and the cannabis plant. Some of us may even hold this feeling in one way or another, either way, cannabis, and spirituality can often be placed into the same category. Lastly, when it comes to the tranquility associated with marijuana, most of us can attest that even if we use marijuana for a physical medical condition when used it relaxes the body as a whole. You don’t need to be a scientist to figure that one out! With all the things we had to learn later about cannabis once it became freely available, some people who had previously used cannabis felt that all the new information coming out was essentially useless to them.

Since they had been already into cannabis, they felt as if they already knew enough. But we can never truly know enough about anything, especially things you enjoy or partake in regularly. While we all knew that marijuana was a great way to relax, we didn’t know exactly why. This is why learning about marijuana’s tranquil effects from all angles is such an interesting thing to do. Now that cannabis is becoming more and more available throughout the United States, it is likely that we will finally have full comprehensive studies on everything about cannabis. These innovations will be gateways to amazing breakthroughs in medical science and will help an incalculable amount of people. And while that is a great achievement, at the same time, more people might be able to relax more, and a little more tranquility in the world might just be what the doctor has been ordering.

CBD Do you ever lie awake at night, hour after hour, not being able to fall asleep? Or maybe you have been diagnosed with insomnia? Whatever the situation is, not enough sleep affects your daily routine. However, a good night’s sleep is also essential to our overall health and wellbeing. Experts recommend adults sleep seven to nine hours each night; therefore, proper sleep ensures you feel well-rested and have energy for the next day. A good night’s rest also contributes to memory formation, helps grow and repair muscle and tissue, and prevents sickness. There are different types of sleep issues that people experience. For example, some people cannot fall asleep at night, and others wake up after only a few hours of rest. Here are a few of the most common types of sleep issues below. INSOMNIA. Insomnia means that you have a hard time falling or staying asleep throughout the night, which can impair your ability to stay awake during daytime hours. PARASOMNIA. May include walking, talking, eating while in bed, or making other disruptive sounds while sleeping at night. SLEEP APNEA. It happens when a person ceases breathing for short periods while sleeping at night. Sleep apnea does not necessarily occur consistently. However, this condition can be lifethreatening if the person stops breathing for more extended periods. 31

SLEEP by Tatiana Melendez

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS). Some people wake up after only three or four hours of sleep because they constantly move around, often without knowing it’s happening. This kind of issue is known as restless leg syndrome. RLS affects roughly seven to ten percent of the population. Some causes of RLS are neuropathy, use of alcohol, iron deficiency, and certain medications like antidepressants and anti-nausea drugs. As many as seventy percent of Americans report not sleeping the recommended hours, and nearly onethird of American workers sleep less than six hours per night! Of course, people who suffer from these disorders experience the ability to concentrate and bad moods. It seems to be more common than we think. . Another never-ending cycle due to poor sleep is anxiety. People suffer from anxiety about getting inadequate sleep, increasing sleeplessness at night. According to multiple studies, things that can cause you to lose sleep come in the forms of: Mental health disorders, such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and depression medication, which can disturb your sleep-wake cycle physical conditions, such as chronic pain caffeine environmental factors, such as loud noises or an uncomfortable be environmental factors, such as loud noises or an uncomfortable bed So, how are people combating sleepless nights? One increasingly popular strategy for a good night’s rest is taking cannabidiol (CBD). CBD is a derivative of cannabis, and it is commonly used to improve sleep and decrease anxiety. Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that bind or attach to specific receptors in the central nervous system and act as chemical messengers. Depending on the particular cannabinoid, it may have varied effects on the body.

For those new to this subject, CBD differs from THC and does not cause psychoactive effects or a “high” because it does not cause psychoactive effects. CBD may also promote homeostasis in the body, which potentially supports sleep. Homeostasis is a process in which the body does its best to maintain equilibrium or balance. As a result, CBD might help promote homeostasis so that your body does not overreact when something stressful happens during the day. In another study published in The Permanente Journal, seventy-two adults with anxiety and poor sleep were involved. The participants completed anxiety and sleep assessments at the start of the research and the firstmonth follow-up. The participants were given 25 mg of CBD in capsule form. Those that predominantly had sleep complaints took the dose in the evening. Participants that had anxiety as their predominant complaint took CBD in the morning. After the first month, anxiety scores decreased by seventy-nine percent of people. Sleep scores improved sixty-six percent of the participants, which indicated less trouble sleeping. The results suggest that CBD decreased sleep difficulties in many of the participants. But while the decrease in anxiety symptoms remained steady for the duration of the study, the sleep scores fluctuated over time. How does the Food Drug Administration (FDA) feel about CBD? Well, it is still too early to tell. FDA relies on applicants and scientific investigators to conduct research. The agency’s role is to review data submitted to the FDA in an application for approval to ensure that the drug product meets the statutory standards for support. Only a few cannabis derived or cannabis related drug products are FDA-approved in the U.S., such as Epidiolex. Remember to consult with your doctor before consuming CBD products. They will be able to guide you through the process. Here are a few other CBD products that have been approved by FDA: Epidolex. is an oral CBD solution and was the first drug containing a purified cannabis derived substance approved by the FDA.

The drug is approved for seizure treatment in rare and severe forms of epilepsy, Dravet syndrome, LennoxGastaut syndrome, and tuberous sclerosis complex for patients ages two and up. Marinol and Syndros. These two drugs contain dronabinol, a synthetic form of THC. They come in capsules or oral solutions. Dronabinol affects the part of the brain that controls appetite, nausea, and vomiting, so the drugs have several therapeutic uses. These uses include the treatment of nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy patients and weight loss treatment in patients with HIV. Cesamet. Cesamet contains nabilone, a synthetic compound with a chemical structure like THC. Like dronabinol, this capsule also affects the part of the brain that controls vomiting and nausea. The drug is prescribed to chemotherapy patients who have not responded to other nausea and vomiting treatments.

INGREDIENTS

Good day and happy new year to all my canna chefs out there, it’s hard to believe that it’s 2022 already. I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable holiday season this year. Mine was packed full of fun times and cool places. I know this year I will be doing a lot more traveling and spending time with family and friends. These last couple of years, I’ve really not had a lot of time to spend with them, so this year will be different. This first month’s recipe is for a close friend of mine Jerry, he has been wanting a good veggie recipe and I love making these portobellos with red wine sauce. I swear it’s as good as a steak, maybe even better, you can decide, my Cannatarian Portobello Steaks with Red Wine Reduction. So grab a bag of your favorite herb, twist one up and let’s get Cooking with a Buz!

RED WINE REDUCTION SAUCE

PORTOBELLO STEAK

½ cup Red Wine

3 Portobello Mushroom

½ cup Vegetable Stock

½ cup Balsamic Vinegar

(Beef Stock for non vegetarian)

1 tbsp. Red Wine Vinegar

¼ cup Shallots minced

2 tbsp. Canna Olive Oil

1 Garlic Clove minced

1 ½ Garlic Cloves minced

1 tbsp. Rosemary chopped

½ tsp. Basil

2 tbsp. Butter

¼ tsp. Ground Black Pepper

Small amount of olive to coat pan

Pinch Salt

DIRECTIONS 1. First, remove the stems and chop them up, next combine all the ingredients, except the Portobello, and mix together well, place in a large bag and then add the Portobello mushrooms, making sure they are well coated. 2. Refrigerate for 12-24 hours. Remove from the marinade and cook over the grill, stem side down, about 4-5 minutes then flip and cook for another 4-5 minutes, the portobello should be tender. 3. Once cooked, remove from the grill and slice, plate with a red wine reduction. 4. This is one of my favorite sauces for steak, it’s quick, easy and has great flavor, and will complement the portobello nicely! First, lightly coat your pan with olive oil, then over medium heat cook the shallots until they become transparent, then toss in the garlic, cook the garlic for a couple of minutes. Just until it becomes fragrant, be careful not to burn it. Now add the red wine and stock and reduce it by a little more than half, 3-5 minutes. Now stir in your butter and rosemary and turn down to medium to low heat and cook for about another 2-3 minutes. Season with a pinch of salt. If you want a smooth sauce

COOKING with a

BUZ

strain out the shallots and garlic. Now take the plated slices of portobellos and drizzle a little sauce over them and it’s ready to serve, as a true chef!

THE WORLD OF CANNABINOIDS AND TERPENES Written by Dr. Pepper Hernandez ND, Ph.D., CTC, CNHP, NHC

Board Certified and Award-Winning Holistic Health Practitioner

What is Sabinene? B

y now many of you have heard of terpenes and may or may not know what they are. They are naturally occurring chemical compounds found in plants and some animals. They are responsible for the aromas, flavors, and even colors associated with various types of vegetation. In terms of cannabis, terpenes are what make certain cultivars smell or taste different from others. This may be the reason why you gravitate towards a certain flower to smoke. This month we will be discussing the wonderful terpene Sabinene. Sabinene is a secondary monoterpene, it may not be one that you see all that often. This terpene may flavor your food and offer a smell to numerous sorts of edibles. It is a natural component found in a wide variety of essential oils and various cannabis plants and cultivars. Sabinene is the chemical responsible for the spicy, lemony, and piney aromas found in some cannabis cultivars. Sabinene is found in higher amounts in hazy cannabis cultivars, enhancing woody, citrus, and mint-like aromas. Its smell is reminiscent of pines, oaks, and oranges, with spicy hints of black pepper. Sabinene has been used for wound healing in several branches of traditional medicine from around the world. The characteristics of this amazing terpene are also used in Western medicine. Sabinene, found in essential oils, serves as an antioxidant renowned for its efficacy due to its strong radical scavenging properties. Not only does it smell good but it also has a wide range of biological and pharmacological activities.

41 JANUARY 2022 thechronicmagazine.com

For example, after much research, they have found it to be anti-fungal, antiviral, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antihyperglycemic, anti-parasitic, antioxidant, and antimicrobial. Sabinene demonstrates that it has enormous potential by inhibiting oxidation, which contributes to skin aging. Sabinene is helpful with: Muscle Cramps Physical Pain Bacteria Infections Range of Viruses Digestion Issues Detoxification Process Cultivars that contain Sabinene: Harlequin Tsunami Super Silver Haze Super Lemon Haze Grand Master Kush Mimosa Chocolate Thai Mendo Purps

Not all cannabis cultivars are alike, and as organic farmers continue to breed their specific genetics, users need to know what the cannabinoid profile is. Knowing the flower they are testing can bring positive experiences, the best experience and outcome, and an educated decision on what will be best for their medical issue and or aliment. GORILLA GLUE AKA GG AKA ORIGINAL GLUE LINEAGE: SOUR DUBBLE X CHOCOLATE DIESEL X CHEM’S SISTER @lucidmoonok @ramblinghippie

S

ince starting my journey in the cannabis community, I have had the opportunity to meet and connect with a lot of amazing people. The biggest contributor to these introductions has been being employed by The Lettuce Bar as a Cannician in Choctaw, OK. We had teamed up with the group from The Cowboy Cup, a cannabis competition and festival out of Stillwater, as the place to drop off entries and pick up judge’s packs. Through this connection, I was able to meet this amazing human, Christian Stark (@cannaguardian on TikTok). When Christian came into the shop that day to pick up her judge’s pack, we got to talking about her current role in the cannabis community, how it’s played such a huge part in the quality of life not only for herself, but also for her daughter. Christian’s oldest daughter, Olivia, is adopted. They came into each other’s lives when Olivia was 5 years old.

SUR VIVOR. by Sloane Simon

THRIVING THROUGH CANNABIS

When Olivia, or Livi as Christian lovingly refers to her, was only a year old, she was left alone with her 2-year-old brother in the bathtub. Unfortunately, while Livi’s birth mom was out of the room, her head went under water. Livi suffered an anoxic brain injury from drowning which has led to the diagnosis of cerebral palsy, spastic quadriplegia, epilepsy, and scoliosis from being wheelchair bound. When Livi came to live with Christian and her family she was on fifteen different prescriptions. Twelve of those prescriptions were for seizures. Over the next few years, they were able to wean her down to 5 or 6. And in 2020, they began to wean her off all of her meds. The initial weaning was possible in part to CBD, Charlotte’s web specifically. A CBD regimen has been part of Livi’s daily routine for many years.

When Christian came across Every Seed Canna Co. and their edibles, she found a company that was producing high quality medicine that would actually blend up well enough that she could administer a dosage to Livi through her feeding tube. Finding this company, as well as Mittie’s Medicinals, completely changed both Christian and Livi’s lives. For the first time since bringing her home with them, Livi slept until 6am the next morning. So, Christian found the nearest dispensary to her house, a fortyfive-minute drive, and bought all of their Every Seed Canna Co. products, which was a couple of hundred dollars’ worth of items. When the people of Every Seed Canna Co, found out about Christian and Livi, a job opportunity arose. Christian believes in their quality of products so much so that she is now a sales rep for them. Weaning Livi off of all of her medications definitely was not an easy task. During the initial weaning off all of the meds, Livi spent a solid four weeks crying. She is not able to verbally communicate her needs or pains, so it was a very trying time for everyone. Livi’s doctor felt that she may be dealing with some anxiety from all of it, and that was what was prompting her to cry uncontrollably. So, they agreed that Livi would remain on the Trazodone to help with anxiety and depression, as well as Dantrolene for her spasticity. Livi also utilizes a vagal stimulator to help control her seizures. While trying to provide the highest quality of care to her daughter, the difficulty in weaning with the crying started to take a toll on Christian. This was also in the middle of Covid taking over our world.

So, we have this young mother, in the middle of a global pandemic, three children at home, and life just being unpredictable for all of us at this time. It brought Christian to a breaking point. One I think many mothers can relate to that went from sending kids to school every day, to suddenly being stuck at home, trying to navigate this strange new existence.

“Last year,

I was very, very sick

mentally.

I just wanted to die.”

Christian was fighting her own battles with anxiety and depression and facing suicidal and homicidal thoughts. She would spend time alone on the Illinois river, with a gun and cannabis, contemplating what to do next. Cannabis would get her through the hard times, though. Those loud, intrusive thoughts would shut up once she was able to get away, smoke, and have that much needed time to herself. It was around this time that she started to realize the need to understand what she was medicating with better. She started researching different strains, different terpenes and better understanding what would help her the most. Initially, the healthcare system tried to push more antidepressants on her to curb her suicidal thoughts, but Christian was soon able to find a doctor that supported her in her desire to try to fight her illness with cannabis. “That man saved my life!” He was willing to listen to her and supported her desire to treat herself naturally. Christian soon started therapy and using cannabis medicinally. Christian’s official diagnosis was bipolar disorder, and she has been prescribed Prozac. However, since January 1, 2021, she has been treating her bipolar with cannabis and micro-dosing mushrooms since August.

47

JANUARY 2022 thechronicmagazine.com

Thankfully, Christian hasn’t seen much pushback from any of Livi’s doctors. She did have one physician assistant tell her that she was slowly killing Livi’s Gaba receptors by giving her THC. However, studies have shown that THC is very beneficial for helping with seizures. From everyone else, there has been nothing but support and encouragement because Livi’s seizures have decreased and absolutely no one wants to see her suffer through a seizure. Since both Livi and Christian began medicating with cannabis, they both have had a huge increase in their quality of life. Livi suffers from way fewer seizures, as well as getting better sleep at night. Christian feels that cannabis has given her a life that she could have never imagined. She feels as though it has helped her to not only be a better mother but a better wife, a stronger woman. Her younger children are aware of “mommy’s medicine,” she does medicate in front of them and feels that it is important for them to also be educated on the positives of cannabis.

Because of the wonderful work cannabis has done in her and Livi’s lives, Christian is hoping to propose Livi’s Law eventually. Christian’s dream is that all staff members at state agencies that are care providers for cannabis patients are properly trained cannicians, meaning that they are well versed in the endocannabinoid system, the way cannabinoids and terpenes affect our bodies, and what works best for each ailment. In knowing how the endocannabinoid system and cannabis interact, the care provider would be more capable of providing the appropriate dosage of whatever terpenes/cannabinoids interact best for the patient. Christian has always been passionate about helping people with disabilities. Her cousin, who was also her best friend, had cerebral palsy. He taught her how to properly love people with disabilities from a young age. Because of him, she wants to honor his life and her daughter by advocating for them and their care providers to be educated in cannabis and the many health benefits of cannabis.

AS ALWAYS, I ASKED CHRISTIAN ABOUT SOME OF HER FAVORITES. OF COURSE, SHE AND LIVI BOTH LOVE THEIR INDIA BROWNIES FROM EVERY SEED CANNA CO., BUT SHE IS ALSO A BIG FAN OF MITTIE’S MEDICINALS ELDERBERRY WATER SOLUBLE TINCTURE. SINCE LIVI IS ONLY ABLE TO TAKE HER MEDICINE THROUGH HER FEEDING TUBE, THE WATER-SOLUBLE ELDERBERRY IS SAFE TO PASS THROUGH HER TUBE WITHOUT ISSUE. THE ELDERBERRY HAS BEEN A BIG HELP IN PROVIDING PAIN RELIEF FROM MENSTRUAL CRAMPS.

As for Christian, an old-school favorite of Girl Scout Cookies gives her the nice balanced high she needs to still mom throughout the day and keep a level head. Humulene is her favorite terpene because it is an appetite suppressant. Christian is a certified personal trainer, and if it wasn’t for cannabis, she feels she would still be fifty pounds heavier. Cannabis helped her get motivated to run a marathon while pushing Livi in her wheelchair. This goal led her to get her education in personal training because she simply wanted to learn how to properly work out. Christian knew the importance of having a healthy body herself so she could properly take care of Livi as she grew. So, in September of 2021, they completed their first full marathon together. Cannabis has given both Livi and Christian a new lease on life. Now Christian will spend her life advocating not only for cannabis but for a community that doesn’t always have a voice but deserves all the best care possible. thechronicmagazine.com
