A MINUTE WITH THE MEENTS
A note from the President............
As the great days of summer continue to click off the calendar so very rapidly, I have attended several state junior preview shows, and the state fair season is right around the corner. What I am seeing not only at preview shows, but at National Hereford Shows is that the soundness of Hereford cattle has been on a slight decline in the past decade. Throughout the 1970’s, 80’s, and 90’s Hereford cattle were easily the soundest of all breeds. Hereford bulls were known industry wide to be able to walk large pastures and range lands to get cows bred. Since the beginning of the new millennium, I believe there has a been a little decline in the soundness of Hereford cattle. I have witness this feet and leg issue mostly at the National Western Stock Show, the North American, and Keystone National, but also at several other smaller events where Hereford cattle are on display. As the Hereford breed has gained so much popularity in the show circles, and many judges want all breeds of cattle to look alike, the judges have selected straighter shouldered, and straighter hocked Herefords. Yes, these cattle are more pleasing to the eye to view, but they are also shorter strided off both ends, and not as structurally correct. When selecting replacement females or breeding bulls, watch the cattle walk coming at you, from the side, and going away from you. When coming at you, make sure the cattle do not toe in or out, but their hooves are straight. Also make sure they are not turning in or out on their front pasterns. When viewing from the side while walking, make sure that the rear hoof is going into the same hole in the dirt that the front hoof just came out of. If that does not happen the beast is not structurally sound. When viewing from the rear, view the hocks. How wide the hocks are, check if hocks are traveling straight or rotating around in a circle. Also, when selecting breeding stock, view the cattle’s feet and legs when they are standing. Make sure that all four feet are going in the same direction. In addition, view to see if all four legs are squarely underneath all four corners of the body. Check the clavicle or front shoulder which needs to set in at a 45-degree angle when viewed from the side. When that shoulder gets too straight cattle will begin to buck over in the knee. Furthermore, the rear hock needs some set and a lot of flex. When they are too straight at the hock they can pop their rear pasterns when they walk. Hereford breeders, I challenge you NOT TO SINGLE TRAIT SELECT for any one trait including EPD’s, show ring, or soundness. I recommend making structurally correct sound Hereford cattle a very high priority in your decision making. I do believe that Herefords of today are as sound as any other breed, however the margin is not as great as decades ago.
It has been a busy year for the Buckeyes and a time to celebrate friendships and great activities beginning with the celebration of the Association’s 75th birthday. A super group of Herefords at the Expo, and an unbelievable entry at the recent Ohio State Fair with the quality as good as it gets. Congratulations to all the exhibitors and breeders of this group of cattle. Also a big congratulations to our Juniors who have had a very busy summer. I would like to thank two of their advisors, Leesa and Sarah Beanblossom, who are resigning, for their leadership as the Junior advisors and wish them both success in their future endeavors. With their resignation we are now in the process of finding new BHA members who would like to work with and support a super group of youngsters as their advisors. An application form is included in this Trends for these special folks who are willing to guide and support our future Hereford generation. This time will truly be a memory maker that you will remember for years to come! Looking forward to visiting with you at the FSR, the Futurity, and many sales this fall.

Full sib steers bred by Buckeye Hereford Members Adams Family Show Cattle were just named Grand and Reserve Champion Hereford Steer at the Ohio State Fair. This pair of calves sired by TFR Cyrus 225ET and out of Adams powerful donor AFSC Lady Tank 4X were also named Best of the Buckeye Champions as well. The Champion steer was exhibited by Franklin Kinney of Logan County, while the Reserve steer was exhibited by Alexis Shaw of Tuscarawus county.
