FUN DAY SUCCESS

Plusses galore for Onerahi The New Year has brought a whole host of plusses to Onerahi • The new roundabout, which has smoothed traffic flow at the Hammer Hardware corner. • The new village clock – and the hanging baskets – at the shopping centre. • Council’s decision to defer several projects rather than go further into debt. • The Family Fun Day organised by the Resource Centre on February 9th – a big success.

“It was great – let’s have more of these!” That was the general response to the Family Fun Day held at Sherwood Park on February 9th.

Faith said she would like to thank all the volunteers, especially Mal and Barbara Venables, Janice and Aaron Roberts and Lavinia Heke for helping to make the day such a success. • And yes, more things are coming for the Community House-based resource centre – a Health Expo next month, regular SPCA visits, budgeting advice and an evening Te Reo Maori course. I was sitting on the truck’s deck, writing a note to its owner, Jimi Hart. The truck wasn’t mine, but I empathised with the solgan on the back of it: ‘Some people are so poor, all they have is money.’ Street entertainer Jimi Hart has been nusking throughout Northland during the holidays, and Onerahi - next to the police station - has been his home base. “I have some good long-term friends in Onerahi, and I feel it’s my second home,” he said. “Retailers often tell me they turn their own music off when I’m playing.” Jimi - complete with acoustic guitar, a wicked sense of humour and a bit of magic up his sleeve, has been busking for years “Country, rock and ballads - music with a message.”

The truck is a 1966 K Bedford and has been his home since he transformed it eight years ago. It has an 1865 washing machine, a gas cooker and solar energy and, he says, is ‘definitely not a big white motor home’. Fittingly, it is full of character. Originally from Haum-oana in Hawkes Bay, Jimi now calls Northland home - and, as he says, Onerahi is a favourite. - By John Ross

TEEN TALK by KRYSTAL BRIEFLY....

Before deciding to get more involved in our community I never realised all that the Onerahi Community Association does. I sincerely think that the Onerahi community should become as aware as I am now of the good job they, and what partner groups like the Focus Group have done for our community. I would especially like to congratulate Faith King from the ORC for the Family Fun Day which was a stunning example of what a difference these groups can make to our little community. The one opportunity that the OCA has provided that really impresses me the most is the Youth Scholarship. It shows that they are thinking of all ages. So

please, mums, dads, teachers, teens! I strongly advise you to take advantage of this scholarship. The details are in this issue on Page 4.

Air Show

The long-awaited Air Show and other activities in Onerahi is still planned for February 2014 – only 11 months away! The show itself will be at the airport, but the other activities will be centred in Beach Road. Watch this space!

More wool wanted Krystal Thompson I can say with the utmost pride that I am now an official member of the OCA committee, and I encourage all, of all ages, to become involved to better our community.

Onerahi-based Operation Coverup, which knits clothes for needy people in Eastern Europe, is again looking for donations of wool. Contact Adele at 436-2587 for more information.

Order of Merit

Know someone in our community who could be a recipient for this year’s Onerahi Order of Merit? If they have given outstanding service to the community, you can nominate them. Write to the OCA at PO Box 3031, Onerahi. Closing date for nominations is May 31st.

No win

60th Jubilee celebrated

Publishing can be a hard business. One of our regular advertisers said to us last week : “Sorry, but I’m so busy I don’t need to advertise.” And another : “It’s been so quiet I can’t afford to advertise.” We just can’t win, can we?

The Onerahi Indoor Bowling Club celebrated its 60th Jubilee on August 25th 2012.

Waikaraka track

What’s happening here, at Cartwright Road? See Page 10

The event was sponsored by Onerahi New World which provided prizes of meat and chickens, played for by 80 bowlers from all the bowling clubs in the Whangarei area as well as members of the local club. The day-long tournament provided entertainment, merriment and hotly-contested games.

A special afternoon tea was laid on , and the Jubilee cake was cut by three Onerahi life members, Marie Lloyd, Betty Davies and Nan Shepherd. • Raffles and prizes donated by club members and the club meant that every player was rewarded on the day. • The Orbit would like to apologise to the club, its officers and New World Onerahi for an incorrect story appearing in our November issue. It was due to a mix-up in our computer files.

The superb hill-walking and mountain biking track from the end of Cartwright Rd up to Mount Tiger Rd will re-open after forestry logging has finished at the end of April. BUT the growth of thick gorse needs to be cleared first. Readers who would like to help with this should contact David Fellows, Ph 436-3217 or email dfjf@tinyworld.co.uk by the end of this month.

Script charges - dos and dont’s

Pharmacy prescription charges – which are a Government-imposed tax – have risen from $3 to $5 each.

This can be a difficult extra cost for many people, especially at the start of the year when often several items are collected at once. To prevent paying any more than 20 prescription taxes in a year, make sure your chosen pharmacy knows who is

in your family. Ask at your pharmacy to check they have your family all lionked together. If anyone in the family uses a different pharmacy, then always take the receipts to yoir ‘chosen’ pharmacy so the prescription charges can be added to your list.

see if they can help you with this.

Some people find it helpful to set up small regular weekly automatic payments throughout the year. Talk to your pharmacy about how you can set this up. AND always talk to the people at your pharmacy if you have any issues or concerns about your medicines, as there are usually ways to ensure you get the medicine you need.

Some people are able to get extra support from WINZ to help cover prescription costs, so talk to the people at WINZ to

The Onerahi Focus Group would like to express its thanks to each of the parties who enabled the construction, painting, erection and commissioning of the new Onerahi clock. There was a tight time frame to complete this project so that it would be ready for the official opening, held in conjunction with the Christmas Parade on Saturday 1st Dec. 2012 While the concept of a new clock was mooted several years ago, detailed planning only began in the last 12 months. Even when a design was finalised and finance had been raised there were considerable delays in obtaining the clock from France and the special tapered pole from Australia. But once these unavoidable delays were overcome, each of the parties involved performed with credit.

Brett Currie of Currie Electrical for the installation of an underground power supply, wiring of the clock and installation on site. Laurie Haines of Lauranka NZ Ltd. who supplied the clock and answered many questions.

Steve Gwilliam of Kennedy and Associates for engineering advice and supervision.

Kaumatua Eddie Tito blesses the pole supporting Onerahi’s new Village Clock.

Onerahi Community Association (parent body to Onerahi Focus Group) for their on-going enthusiasm and financial assistance.

Our special thanks and congratulations to those who prioritised this work in the last week, in order to meet such a tight deadline for completion and the official unveiling on the Saturday. John Clark (Chairman) on behalf of Onerahi Focus Group

Councillors cut their cloth

The new clock, with its distinctive design, towering 5 metres above the Onerahi shops.

Onerahi Lions who made financial contributions to enable this icon to get established.

Members of the public for their donations to help build the funds needed.

We would like to record our thanks to each of the following who played an integral part in enabling the project to be completed efficiently and on time: Whangarei District Council for both technical and financial support.

Vodafone for their commitment and financial support to this project.

Watching the unveiling: Cr Sue Glen, Vickie Fisher, deputy Mayor Phil Halse and his wife Flo. Not in photo: Vodafone’s Caitlin Metz.

Every year council reviews its financial forecasts against outcomes. With $13m of projects carried forward from previous years, property sales still to happen and an opening debt $5 higher than expected, council has decided to cut its coat to suit its cloth. The choice was clear : Defer capital projects or go further into debt. Council chose the former. As a result some local projects, eg the improved playground, new skatepark and changes to the Cartright Road intersection won’t be done until towards the end of the year. Other majoir projects, eg the Lower Hatea bridge, some roading maintenance and moves towards eliminating untreated wasterwater from the harbour wil be completed this year. Surprise for local aviation fans

Combined Churches of Onerahi Community Good Friday Service

Local aviation followers got a treat on January 5th when the only flying example of the de Havilland Mosquito visited Whangarei Airport.

March 29th, 10am, St Stephen’s Hall Church Street, Onerahi (Behind the Airport)

Jacobson Engineering 96 Awaroa River Road Phone Regan - 09 946 0711

The de Havilland Mosquito which paid a surprise visit to Whangarei Airport, Onerahi, on January 5th.

It was accompanied by a Trojan T-28, and their arrival drew a crowd of about 1500 people. Built mainly of wood during the Second World War, these aircraft saw action in Europe and the Pacific and were renowned for their speed. The Mosquito has two Rolls Royce V12 engines, giving it a distinctive sound. It was found in a derelict state in Russia, and was brought to New Zealand and restored in South Auckland by Avspecs. Now owned by American Gerry Jagan, it is bound for an aviation museum in Virginia Beach. The crowds were thrilled to see both aircraft make a low fly-pass before landing at Onerahi and spectators were able to view them close-up on the ground. The costs of the visit were met by former Whangarei resident John Antunovich, a member of the War Birds Association based at Ardmore. • The Mosquito has a local link. Its radiator and other cooling systems parts were made by Replicore NZ Ltd of Parua Bay.

Battle against invasive weeds Like most places, Onerahi has a problem with invasive weeds. The Onerahi CoastLine Action Group, OCLAG, runs a programme of weed eradication and planting of natives on public land and reserves. But weeds are happy to colonise private land too. Chris Morey, recently moved to Onerahi, plans to tackle these nasties. Why? Pest plants on private land form a reservoir of seeds which re-infest cleared areas and give nearby gardeners an ongoing problem. He targets four species, all recognised by Northland Regional Council as serious pests: wild ginger, woolly nightshade (tabacco weed), lantana and moth plant. All are quick-spreading and highly competitive to native species. Where Chris sees infestations, he will call or leave a note. On roadsides and similar, he will just get stuck in.

Woolly nightshade - large bluegreen leaves, clusters of blue flowers followed by green-orange berries. Small plants can be pulled out. Cut larger ones 150-200mm above ground and apply a thin smear of Vigilant gel to the stump. If very large, ringbark and treat the cut with Vigilant. Lantana - prickly branches, clusters of pink or yellow flowers, followed by dark-coloured berries. Treat as for woolly nightshade. Moth plant - a climber with clusters of white flowers followed by choko-like pods. Pull out or break off below ground level. Wear protective clothing, as the milky sap is irritant. Take care pulling vines down from trees as the sap can spray around. Fruits and seeds should be bagged as rubbish. Leaves and stems can be left to rot, composted or sent to green waste. Ginger - large heads of sweet-

smelling yellow composite flowers, metsulfuron (Escort or Zeal), ideally with a silicone penetrant - or a squirt of dishwash. Small clumps can be grubbed out. • For more info contact Chris at 436-5466 or Mob (020) 1111-743.

STRONG ISLAND LINKS

A well known Onerahi identity and a close associate of Matakohe - Limestone island Allan Kay Fisher or ‘Kay’ as he was generally known, has died at the age of 97. Kay, known as a ‘fix it’ man, was respected as a hard worker throughout his life, says Onerahi historian Bob Adams. After WW2 the ironically named Fisher brothers, he and his older brother Jack, were fishermen in the Kaipara Harbour before returning to Onerahi. They took on a contract to quarry and transport limestone from the Island upstream to Fagan’s Fertilizer works. The sight of their boat ‘Opaia’, became a familiar feature in the harbour for several years. Kay died in Whangarei Hospital on January 23rd.

Thanks from OCA to JC John Clark, former owner of the Onerahi Bookshop and Lotto outlet, was presented with a parting gift at the Community Association management committee meeting on January 21st. Chairman John Ross said that JC, as chair of the Focus Group, had contributed a great deal to the OCA and the community over the years. His final act had been the installation of the new village clock in the shopping centre on December 1st and his help with the Santa Parade the same day. The Focus Group has disbanded, but Cr Sue Glen and Vickie Fisher will liaise with shopping centre owners in the future. Phone Sue on 436-2180 to discuss any issues relating to the shopping centre.

School’s top enviro status Whangarei Heads School has won top enviro status after becoming the second school in Northland to achieve Green-Gold. The Green-Gold status was officially presented to the school on December 3rd. The National Enviroischools programme is about pupildriven action for designing and creating sustainable schools, eco-systems, local neighbourhoods and beyond. With its roll of 120, Whangarei Heads School is the 51st school in the country to become a Green-Gold Envir-oschool since the awards began nationally in 2004. “A lot happens at Whangarei Heads School. It feels like a living ecosystem where everyone is encouraged to work towards sustainability,” said Susan Karels, Regional Enviroschools Co-ordinator for the Northland Regional Council. One of the pupil-driven projects has been possumtrapping in the native bush surrounding the schoool. As well as helping protect the bush and the life it supports, possum-trapping also generates a small revenue stream through the sales. More info available from :www.nrc.govt.nzenviroschools

Payback time for Surf rescues down this teenager

Whangarei Heads Surf Lifesaving Club had only nine rescues at Ocean Beach this summer despite much higher numbers on the beach. An average of 200 people a day flocked to the beach, and as many as 350 people on one day in mid-January. The beach is ever-changing with new holes and rips being created frequently, and a main part of the lifeguards’ duties is to persuade ‘surfies’ to stay between the flags. The voluntary lifeguards work during the weekends, with help from paid lifeguards during the week. Club membership is about 30, with some coming from as far away as Auckland. The surf lifesaving season ends at Easter weekend, and new members are always welcome. • More info from the surf club’s website : Onerahi Orbit - March 2 www.whangareiheadssurflifeguards.co.nz

Surf lifesaving and fire-fighting are just two ways young people can help put back something into their communities, says one of Kamo High School’s top achievers, John-Michael Hicks. John, 18, lives at Whangarei Heads and has been an enthusiastic member of Whangarei Heads Surf Lifesaving Club for several years. He told the Orbit : “I think our generation forgets that life wasn’t easy in the past, and we need to thank those who have made our world what it is.” Heading for Auckland University to take a degree in Media Studies, John, who is of Fijian descent, won an impressive list of awards at the KHS prizegiving. They included the Lions International WOF’s Whangarei Heads Young Ambassador Award, Automotive Technician Ltd Victoria University’s Excellence Wheel Alignment, Scholarship, the ASG Scholastic Vehicle Servicing, Scholarship, the Auckland Automatic Transmission, University Top Maori and Pacific Cambelts, Scholars’ Chancellor’s Award Power Steering, and the ASB Bursary Award for Tyres Community Service.
