German Reformed Congregation of Easton

Whereas, At a meeting of the colored people, residents of the Borough of Easton in the County of Northampton and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania held August 2, 1858 in the room of the Union Cemetery Association Number 69 North Second Street, pursuant to a public call, Adver tised in the “The Daily Express”a newspaper published in the said Borough of Easton, on the thirtieth and thirty first days of July A D 1858 (at which meeting Achilles Vandergrift and Aaron O Hoff secretary) It was stated to the meeting that “The German Reformed Congregation of the Borough of Easton” had proposed to purchase, and convey by deed a lot of land in the south side of the Lehigh River, within the limits of the Borough of South Easton for the use of the col ored people residents of the said Borough of Easton, and its vicinity, in exchange for the portion of ground now used for a burial place for colored people and adjoining the Graveyard of the said “The German Reformed Congregation of the Borough of Easton” which latter portion of ground was to be, in consideration of the said deed and transfer, surrendered onto and re leased up to the said “The German Reformed Congregation of the Borough of Easton”; Where upon on motion it was resolved that the above-stated offer of the exchange be accepted, and that, to properly convey the same the said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton be requested To grant and convey the said lot in South Easton to Henry Price of the said Borough of South Easton his heirs and assigns In trust to hold the same forever, as and for the burial place for the colored people residents of the said Borough of Easton & vicinity residing in the State of Pennsylvania at the time of their decease, the said lot to be under the care, manage ment, and regulation of the Association now formed or organized upon behalf of the said colored people among themselves, known as “The Union Cemetery Association of the Borough of Easton” so long as the said Association shall exist, and in case of its extinction then to be under the care, management, and regulation of a committee of three of the colored residents of the Borough of Easton and South Easton to be annually chosen by the said colored people, residents of the said Borough of Easton and South Easton in such a manner and at such place as they in general meeting called shall determine to agree.

This Indenture made the 19th day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight Between “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton” in the Coun ty of Northampton and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, of the first part, and Henry Price of the Borough of Easton in the County and Commonwealth aforesaid of the other Part.

And whereas the said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton “ have for the purpose of consummating the premises, and making the proposed exchange above-stated, purchased of and from Lorance [sic} Schaffer and John George Schwab three lots of ground, in the said Borough of South Easton hereinafter particularly described, and at a meeting of the said Congregation, duly convened the President and Secretary of the Consistory of the said “The Ger man Reformed Congregation of Easton” were ordered and directed to make and execute a

Now this Indenture Witnesseth, That “The Said German Reformed Congregation of Easton” for and in consideration of the premises and surrender and release of the portion of ground ad joining the grave yard of this said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton above-stat ed, & the further sum of one Dollar unto them well and truly paid by the said Henry Price on behalf of the said colored people at and before the sealing and deli very of these presents, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, Have granted, bargain, sold, alien enfeoffed, re leased, conveyed and confirmed, and by these presents Do grant, bargain, sell, alien, enfeeoff, release, convey, and confirm unto the said Henry Price his heirs and assigns

Together with all and singular, the improvements, ways, rights, liberties, privileges, heredita ments and appurtenances whatsoever thereunto belonging or in any way appertaining and the reversions and remainders, [?] issues and profits thereof, and all the estate, right, title, inter est, claim and demand whatsoever of them, the said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton”, in Law, equity, or otherwise howsoever of, in, and to the same.

All those three certain lots or pieces of ground situated in the Borough of South Easton, Two thereof situated On the North side of Nesquehoning Street in the Borough of South Easton aforesaid containing in front, on said Street Sixty four feet, and extending of that width North wardly one hundred and twenty five feet to a twenty feet wide Alley, Bounded Southwardly by Nesquehoning Street aforesaid, Westward by lot number 8, northward by said twenty feet wide alley, and Eastwardly by lot number 5 Being the two lots numbered 6 & 7 in the plan of Division of lots laid out by John B. Blatz, Valentine Falstich [?] & Joseph Schaffer, trustees, and by them by Indenture bearing date the Nineteenth day of December AD 1857 & recorded in the Office for Recording of Deeds at Easton in the said County of Northampton in Deed Book G vol 9 page 383, & granted & conveyed to John George Schwab, his heirs and assigns, and which the said John George Schwab by deed of assignment bearing date the twenty first day of August AD 1858 and recorded in the office in Deed B. F vol 9, page 614, & granted and conveyed to the said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton” their successors & assigns, and the other Lot, of ground also situated in said Borough of South Easton, containing in front, on a new Street recently laid out, along a line of Samuel Utt’s [?] land, running East and West called Nesquehoning Street 32 feet and in length or depth northward one hundred twenty five feet to a 20 feet wide alley. Bounded on the south by the new Street, on the west by Lot No. 9, on the North by the said twenty feet wide alley and on the East by lot No. 7. Being the Lot marked No. 8 in the plan of Division of lots made by the said John B. Blatz, Valentine Falstick and Joseph Schaffer, trustees as aforesaid, and by them, by Indenture bearing date the first day of August AD 1856 recorded in said Office In Deed Book D volume 9 page 331, & granted and conveyed to Lawrence Schaffer, who by Deed of Assignment bearing date the twenty fifth day of August AD 1858 and recorded in said Office in Deed Book F volume 9 page 615 granted and conveyed the same unto the said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton” their successors and assigns.

And the said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton”, for themselves and their suc cessors, do covenant and agree to and unto the said Henry Price his heirs and assigns, that they the said German Reformed Congregation of Easton, and their Successors all and, singular the hereditaments and premises hereby granted or mentioned and intended so to be with the appurtenances unto the said Henry Price his heirs and assigns in trust as aforesaid, against them the said The German Reformed Congregation of Easton and their successors and against all and every other person or presents whomsoever, lawfully claiming or to claim the same any part thereof by from or under them or any of them, Shall and will Warrant and forever defend;

To Have and To Hold the three above described Lots or pieces of ground, hereditaments and premises hereby granted or mentioned and intended so to be with the appurtenancs, to the said Henry Price his heirs and assigns to and for the only proper use and behoof of the said Henry Price his heirs and assigns forever. In Trust nevertheless to the uses upon the Trust to and upon the several uses, interests and purposes hereinafter expressed, concerning the same, that is to say, In Trust to hold the same, forever, as and for the burial place for the colored people residents of the said Borough of Easton & vicinity resident in the State of Pennsylvania at the time of their decease, the said Lot to be under the care, management & regulation of the colored people among themselves known as the Union Cemetery Association of the Borough of Easton so long as the said Association shall exist, and in [?] then in under the care, manage ment and regulation of a committee of three of the colored residents of the Boroughs of Easton and South Easton to be annually chosen by the colored people resident of said Borough in such manner, and at such place as they In General meeting called shall determine and agree, the Committee elected to continue in office until their Successors be duly chosen.

And the said Henry Price, Achilles Vandergrift, and Aaron O. Hoff acting for and in behalf of the colored people residents of the said Borough of Easton & vicinity and by their authority as above stated for and in consideration of the premises and the conveyance of the said three lots of ground above - and for and in consideration of the sum of Twenty five Dollars, to them the said Henry Price in hand paid by the said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton” to and for the use & benefit of the said The Union Cemetery Association of the Borough of Easton at the time of the execution hereof, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, Have grant ed, released, aliens, enfeeoffed and confirmed, and by these presents Do grant, release, alien, enfeoff and confirm unto the said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton” their successors and assigns, All that piece or portion of Ground situate in the said Borough of Easton now used for a burial place for colored people adjoining the graveyard of the said The German Reformed Congregation of Easton in the North West corner of said graveyard being in between Sixth Street and the said Grave Yard of the said German Reformed Congregation of Easton. To gether with all & singular the rights ]?] & appurtenances whatsoever thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining and the reversions and remainders, rents, issues and profits thereof. To Have and To Hold the said portion of released ground hereby granted, released, and assigned or [?] or intended so to be with the appurtenances unto the said “The German Reformed Con gregation of Easton” their successors and assigns to the only proper use and behoof of the said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton, their successors and assigns forever.

Schlabach Received the day of the date of the above Indenture of the above named “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton” the sum of Twenty five Dollars consideration money above-mentioned. Be It remembered that on the twentieth day of September A. D. 1858 before me the under signed, Recorder of Deeds in and for the said County of Northampton personally appeared George Hess, Esq., President of the Consistory of the German Reformed Congregation of Easton who being duly sworn before me and saithe that he was personally present at the ex ecution of this above written Indenture or Deed of Conveyance, and Saw the common Seal of the said corporation of “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton” duly affixed thereto and that the seal so affixed thereto is the common and Corporate Seal of the said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton” and that the above written Indenture or Deed of conveyance was duly signed sealed and delivered by and as and for the act and deed of the said “The German Reformed Congregation of Easton” for the uses and purposes therein mentioned; and that the name of this Deponent Subscribed to the said Deed as President of the said Corpo ration in attestation of the execution and delivery of the said Deed is of this Deponent’s own proper and respective hand [?] Geo. Hess

Sworn and subscribed the day and year aforesaid, before me. Witness my hand and seal of of fice Geo. Schlabach Recorder [Office seal] Northampton County [?] . Before me the Subscriber Recorder of Deeds in and for said County of Northampton personally came the above named Henry Price, Achilles Vandegrift, & Aaron O. Hoff who under [?] Of law acknowledged the above Indenture & Deed of release to be their act and deed, acting for & on behalf of the colored people residents of the said County of Northampton to the [?] that the same might be recorded as such. Mary Diana HOFF was born on 15 Feb 1863 in Easton, PA, was christened on 31 Mar 1872 in First Colored Evan. Lutheran Church, Easton, PA, died on 5 Oct 1934 in Easton, PA at age 71, and was buried in Easton Cemetery.

Daniel married Marion CARTER on 12 Jun 1957 in Los Angeles, Ca. They had two children: Mildred Susan and Yvonne.

Harriet Elizabeth married George J. HOFF, son of Aaron Ogden HOFF and Dianna BOSTON/REX/HUNT, on 7 Dec 1862 in Christ Evan.Lutheran Church, Easton, PA. George J. was born on 5 Sep 1844 in PA, died on 5 Nov 1870 at age 26, and was buried in Easton Cemetery. They had three children: Mary Diana, George Edwin , and Rosie.

4-Charles Daniel GRINDELL was born on 15 Feb 1925 in Easton, PA and died on 23 Jul 1997 in Lake Elsinore, Ca. at age Charles72.

General Notes: George was first buried in the South Easton Colored Cemetery. In May of 1886 he was exhumed and buried at Easton

3-Rosa GRINDELL was born on 2 Feb 1879 in Easton, PA, died on 1 Feb 1943 in Easton, PA at age 63, and was buried in Easton Cemetery.

Rosa married Daniel WILSON in 1908 in Philadelphia, PA.

Mary Diana next married Charles Edward JEFFERSON, son of Thomas JEFFERSON and Annie Catharine BISHOP. The marriage ended in divorce. Charles Edward was born on 18 Mar 1865 in New Jersey and was christened on 2 May 1868 in Trinity Episcopal Church of Easton, PA. They had two children: Russel J. and Harriett Elizabeth.

1-Harriet Elizabeth PRIME, daughter of Daniel PRIME and Mary PATTERSON, was born @1847 in PA, died on 27 Sep 1903 in Easton, PA at age 56, and was buried on 1 Oct 1903 in Easton Cemetery.

3-Russel J. JEFFERSON was born on 14 Sep 1886 in Easton, PA, was christened on 15 Apr 1887 in Christ Evan.Lutheran Church, Easton, PA, died on 14 Aug 1888 in Easton, PA at age 1, and was buried in Easton Cemetery. He had no known marriage and no known children.

Harriett Elizabeth married Rev. Robert I. JOHNSON. They had two children: Charles and Robert Hoff
