Introduction

Goa, the tiniest state on the western coast of India, boasts golden pristine beaches, palm-fringed avenues, flavourful food, delicious Portuguese-influenced sweets, and warm, hospitable people. Also known as the Ibiza of India for its partying. A tropical paradise of flora and fauna, from the very famous 'almi' (mushrooms) endemic to its forests, that grow only on the red mud anthills, to the solar prawns that are fished immediately after the monsoons, Goa is unique. Tourists are also attracted to Goa for its cultural heritage - from the famous old Portuguese churches like Se Cathedral in Old Goa, the 16th Century Safa Masjid in Ponda and Shree Mangesha Temple in Mardol, the legendary Arvalem or Pandava Caves where the Pandavas of the Mahabharat fame lived, to its two unique festivals - Carnival and Shigmo. Goa plays host to many festivals the International Film Festival of India that promotes cinema, the Serendipity Art Festival, Sunburn Music Festival, to name a few. To showcase this varied heritage of culture, art, tradition, food, and people, in 2015 ItsGoa was born. The main aim was to make it the premier portal for all things Goa. We were able to showcase Goa like never before. Soon our blog-based website transcended the virtual space, with the ItsGoa magazine – a sought-after resource for visitors to Goa from countries like Norway, UK, USA, etc.

In the bustling streets of London, amidst the iconic red double-decker buses and historic landmarks, resides Caniggia Coutinho, a 30-year-old content creator hailing from the quaint village of Seraulim, South Goa. Caniggia's journey from being an aspiring F1 driver to becoming a popular content creator is a tale of passion, determination, and a deep love for making people laugh.

Early Years and Career

Although a native of Seraulim, Caniggia spent most of his childhood in Vasco. As a child, he aspired to become an F1 race car driver. He had a strong passion for cars, especially modified cars. After completing his course in Automobile Engineering Technology from M.E.S College, Zuari Nagar, Caniggia worked as a car technician at a Chevrolet dealership in Vasco. After two years, he decided to move to London in search of greener pastures.

His Life in The UK

To get a job as a car technician in London, Caniggia had to study the trade all over again as the professional qualifications which he had secured in Goa were not recognised in the UK. Caniggia was reluctant to do this as he wanted to quickly make a living and settle down at a young age.

Caniggia Coutinho on duty in London from the Bus Garage So, he took up a job at Heathrow Airport in 2014. After working there for two years, he returned to Goa for a brief period and got married to Elvisha Rodrigues, the love of his life. After getting married, he wanted to do a better job which he enjoyed doing. Since he had a passion for driving, he decided to undergo training to get his UK driving licence and drive the big red double-decker buses in the UK.

Support System

Caniggia's journey as a content creator began during the lockdown when his penchant for making people laugh found a new platform. Inspired by Goan content creators like Desi Goan, Glendy Fernandes, and others, Caniggia decided to try his hand at making funny videos. His early success with mad lips and funny reels, especially the "Roast Mass" reel with over 750K views, propelled him into the limelight.

The backbone of Caniggia's success lies in the unwavering support from his family, especially his wife Elvisha. She has been with him since the time he was in 11th grade. Together, both of them have been navigating through life's ups and downs and have come out even stronger than before. He also thanks God for all the Blessings in his Life. Despite the challenges of hate comments and the time constraints of being a young parent, Caniggia remains focused on the positive feedback and the joy his videos bring to his audience.

Content Style and Collaboration

Caniggia's content revolves around familycentric humour, presented in a simple and relatable way. His videos often touch on family issues, bringing joy and laughter to his audience. Collaborating mostly with his family, including his wife and parents, Caniggia has also joined forces with Goans in London, showcasing the camaraderie within the expatriate community.

Michelle Mendonça Bambawale “Becoming Goan”: The Coming-Home Story of Michelle Bambawale Article by: Steve Antao

Images by: Michelle Mendonça Bambawale

www.itsgoa.com itsgoa_ Itsgoa

In her first attempt at writing a book, Michelle Mendonça Bambawale takes readers on an intimate journey through her life in her recently released “Becoming Goan”. The book talks about her life in Goa after she returned to the state and settled in her ancestral village of Siolim during the pandemic. It narrates her observations about life and current developments in present-day Siolim and contrasts it with life in the village during the 70s and 80s – a time when she used to spend her summer holidays in Siolim.

Her Early Life and Professional Qualifications

Michelle was born in 1966 in a Goan Catholic household in Pune. She did her schooling at St. Anne’s High School and Convent of Jesus and Mary. After completing her schooling, Michelle joined Ness Wadia College and graduated in Commerce in 1986. After this, she moved to Mumbai to pursue a Post-Graduate Diploma in Social Communications and Media at Sophia Polytechnic.

Michelle Mendonça EthelBambawale Da Costa with Team MAC in Dubai 1994Clinic Her Professional Career

After completing her diploma, Michelle kickstarted her career, working for various advertising agencies in Mumbai in the late 80s. In 1990, she ventured into the field of education and joined “Parisar Asha”, an environmental education centre in Mumbai. There, she created videos and documentary films as teaching aids. After the birth of her son Kunal in 1991, she worked as a freelance writer, contributing articles for publications like “The Times of India”, “Young Mother”, and “Femina”.

Becoming Goan Cover

Between 1993 and 2011, Michelle’s husband Bharat’s career commitments caused her and her family to move to Dubai, and then to Bangkok and London. During her 10 years in Dubai, Michelle contributed articles for leading daily newspapers, worked as a marketing communications professional for a subsidiary of Emirates, and was also a part of the team that set up “Ten Sports” in Dubai.

www.itsgoa.com itsgoa_ Itsgoa

After moving to Bangkok in 2003, Michelle joined the curriculum department at the prestigious “International School Bangkok”. There, she used to support teachers in tracking data and assessing curriculum. When she relocated to London in 2008, she pursued her Master’s in Education (Curriculum Pedagogy and Assessment) from the Institute of Education, University College, London and successfully graduated in 2010.

In 2011, Michelle and Bharat moved back to India. This time, to the national capital New Delhi, where Michelle worked for an educational consultancy, building professional learning communities and designing curriculum. In 2018, she started freelancing as an educational

consultant with the British Council, supporting the team across India in the delivery of face-to-face training, development of teacher-related education materials and resources, and monitoring and evaluation of teacher education projects across India.

Her Connection to Goa

Michelle’s grandparents were natives of Goa. Her father, Albert Mendonça was from Siolim, and he inherited the house she currently resides in from his father Jerome Mendonça. Her father’s mother Lulu Tavares came from neighbouring Assagao. Michelle’s mother, Bridget D’Lima e Mendonça, was from Porvorim. Both her mother’s parents were born there; her mother Eslinda Vaz was from Arrarim, and her father Marshall D’Lima was from Lima Vaddo.

Michelle’s father Albert Mendonça with his siblings parents and grandmother www.itsgoa.com itsgoa_ Itsgoa

During her childhood, Michelle used to spend most of her summer holidays in Siolim. She used to also visit the houses of each of her four grandparents during those days. These visits gave Michelle a strong sense of belonging to Goa, and the village of Siolim in particular.

Casa Mendonça

Michelle and her husband Bharat always dreamed of living in Goa. Like so many others, their dream was to live close to the beach. As the beaches of Calangute, Candolim and Baga started getting crazy, crowded and commercial, they realised the impracticality of that idea and decided to look for a place in the village.

That’s when Michelle’s father Albert asked them if they were interested in living in his ancestral house in Siolim. The house was originally built in 1859 by Michelle’s grandfather Jeronimo Mendonça’s grandfather who was also named

Jeronimo Mendonça. Michelle and Bharat were thrilled at the idea and immediately started working on their plan to extend and restore the house. They worked with their talented Goan architect Amit Sukhthankar to complete the restoration of the house. The work of the house was completed in 2009, and the house was named “Casa Mendonça”.

The original house stands solid at the centre of the property and remains the soul of the house. The extensions bring contemporary comforts but retain the high Goan ceilings typical of the original house.

The Inspiration Behind Writing “Becoming Goan”

After relocating to Goa amidst the pandemic, Michelle got a lot of time to reflect on her identity and her Goan roots. She spent time meeting an extended circle of her family and friends and learning the history, customs and traditions of Goa. Gradually, she started experiencing a visceral connection to this land of her ancestors.

All these experiences drove her to start penning the experiences of her new life in modern-day Siolim. She began writing as she was looking for a way to process her emotions and record this important time in her life; the uncertainty of a

Michelle posing with her pet dogs Haruki, Rusty, and Roo

pandemic on one hand, and the solidity of reconnecting to her roots in Goa on the other. These reflections gave birth to her first book, “Becoming Goan”.

Synopsis of the Book

In “Becoming Goan”, Michelle confronts her complex relationship with her Goan Catholic heritage. She had never lived in Goa before the Covid-19 pandemic, and wonders if her Goan ancestry made her an insider or if she would forever remain an outsider. She explores themes of identity, culture, migration, stereotypes, and labels in her thought-provoking book. She takes readers back to Siolim and Goa in the 70s and 80s, where she spent her summer vacations. During that time, there were no paved roads or electricity in the village, and people used to draw water from wells. She contrasts that glorious period with the realities of present-day Siolim, where she dodges earth movers and piles of plastic waste daily when she walks her Labrador Haruki on the streets of the village.

“Becoming Goan” is a heartfelt and charming story of Michelle’s love for Goa, specifically for her ancestral village of Siolim. In the book, she talks about the environmental impact of tourism, construction, and mining on Goa’s rich biodiversity. She explores the evolving identity of Goa, accelerated by the pandemic-induced surge in travel and migration. She grapples with the labels of local, Goan and outsider. With real anecdotes and stories, she reflects on her

dual identity, straddling traditional Goan roots and contemporary influences.

Her Future Plans

In the years to come, Michelle hopes to work with various elected representatives and authorities to bring about several changes in Siolim. She wishes to see things like the availability of reliable public transport, a welllaid-out sewage system, regular electricity and water supply, and good roads with sidewalks to walk in the village. She also aims to lobby various authorities to bring about legislation that would make the provision of adequate parking spaces compulsory for those building new residential and commercial buildings.

Details Regarding Availability of The Book

Michelle’s book “Becoming Goan” is available in leading book stores all across Goa. and also on Amazon. It will also be available in bookshops across India. In early January 2024, Michelle will

In the vibrant coastal town of Calangute in North Goa resides Vishvadeep Vishwesh Kakule, better known to his 49K followers on Instagram as @vkvlogsgoa. While many may associate Goa with its pristine beaches and laid-back atmosphere, Vishvadeep is breaking stereotypes by taking his passion for biking to new heights. This young 25year-old moto-vlogger recently completed a remarkable 2200 km journey from Goa to Hyderabad and 700+ km ride, an expedition that took him to the India-China border on an electric bike.

A Journey through Goa and Beyond

Vishvadeep's journey in the world of biking started at the age of 12 when he first threw his leg over a bike. However, it was at the age of 18 that he fully embraced the thrill of long rides, particularly with his KTM DUKE 250. His fascination for bikes and the open road only grew from there.

After completing high school, Vishvadeep pursued a Diploma in Automobile Engineering. After this, he worked for a few months at Toyota. Later, he ventured into entrepreneurship, establishing a

mobile repair and accessories store in his village of Calangute. Currently, he is on the cusp of launching a washing centre business.

The Electric Adventure: From Goa to the China Border

The highlight of Vishvadeep's motovlogging career was a groundbreaking trip to the India-China border, which he undertook on an electric bike. The trip was organised by Ola Electric in collaboration with the Indian Army. Being an adventure and biking freak, Vishvadeep was thrilled to be a part of the event.

Vishvadeep was accompanied on the trip by his friend. The trip began on September 26th 2023, with a flight from Goa to Chandigarh. From there, Vishvadeep travelled to Kasauli, a town in Himachal Pradesh. From Kasauli, he and his friend rode on an electric bike, along with other participants and members of the Indian army, to the remote village of Chango, situated at the IndiaChina border. It was a total of 7 days of riding, covering a total of 700 km.

Future Adventures and Inspirational Message

Looking ahead, Vishvadeep has ambitious plans for more long-distance rides. A Kashmir to Kanyakumari trip is on the horizon, and he's eyeing international journeys as well. As a moto-vlogger and travel blogger, his primary goal is to share his knowledge and experiences related to bikes with others.

In his own words, Vishvadeep encourages aspiring moto-vloggers and travel bloggers, emphasising that there's no age limit for riding. He advocates for chasing dreams relentlessly and believes that hard work is the key to achieving them.

As Vishvadeep continues to explore new horizons, one thing is certain – his journey is far from over. Whether cruising through the scenic landscapes of India or venturing into international territories, @vkvlogsgoa is set to inspire a new generation of moto-vloggers and travel enthusiasts.

The Electric Steed: OLA S1 Pro Gen 2

For his extraordinary journey, Vishvadeep relied on the All-New OLA S1 Pro Gen 2, an electric bike that underwent rigorous testing throughout the expedition. The trip served as a testament to the growing capabilities and reliability of electric vehicles, even in challenging terrains.

Challenges Faced

Vishvadeep's journey, however, was not without its challenges. Water crossings and the search for charging points for his electric bike presented hurdles. However, with the unwavering support of the Indian Army, Vishvadeep and his friend overcame each obstacle. Throughout the journey, the Indian Army supported all the participants with all their needs - from accommodation to food to even camping equipment. Meet Manu Mahalwar, a dynamic individual whose journey from the vibrant streets of Delhi to the sunkissed beaches of Goa has been nothing short of an adventure. Born in Agra and raised in Delhi within the nurturing folds of an Army family, Manu's diverse background laid the foundation for his multifaceted career in public relations, content creation, and events. This is the story of a man whose passion for cooking and creativity led him to explore uncharted territories, making a mark in the world of hospitality and mixology.

His Professional Qualifications

Manu's educational journey took him through the corridors of Army Public School, Noida, followed by a degree in Mass Communication and a Masters in Events & Public Relations. With this academic foundation, he embarked on a professional journey that would see him spend seven years in the field of public relations, working both in Mumbai and Delhi.

Venturing into Goa's Culinary Scene

Manu's journey eventually brought him to the idyllic coastal paradise of Goa. Drawn by the state's unique culture and vibrant atmosphere, he began exploring and immersing himself in the local food scene. One notable event which he had organised in Goa was a pop-up collaboration with Soul Vacation in South Goa, where he brought the flavours of Delhi Chaat to the Goan table, infused with his personal twist.

The Transition to Hospitality

After gaining significant experience in the PR domain, Manu shifted gears and entered the world of hospitality. His foray included starting an Airbnb apartment in Greater Noida, a venture which sadly came to a halt due to the unforeseen challenges of the pandemic. Undeterred, Manu’s love for cooking and experimentation led him to initiate an Instagram content journey, showcasing his culinary creations, from recipes to cocktails—all self-taught and inspired by his travels.

holistic & spiritual wellness

Fia Soul Wisdom Fia Soul Wisdom, formerly Fia Ayur Wisdom, is a Stockholm-based Holistic and Spiritual Wellness enterprise founded in 2018 Article by: Team ItsGoa

Fia Soul Wisdom is a Holistic and Spiritual Wellness enterprise based in Stockholm, Sweden. The enterprise, which was established in 2018 as Fia Ayur Wisdom, offers a range of holistic wellness services, including inspired Ayurvedic massages, classic massages, Dynamic Reiki Crystal healing, Akashic records readings, and chakra healing with crystals.

At the helm of affairs of this one-woman enterprise is its founder Sofia Felicidade Rego. A native of the quaint village of Aldona, Sofia has been practising as a Holistic Adviser and Massage and Spiritual Therapist since 2005. Through the course of her career spanning nearly 20 years, she has worked as an assistant to an Ayurvedic Doctor, alongside a physiotherapist, in the spa industry, and also as an educator in childcare in Sweden. After experiencing a burnout and then realising that her true calling lay in holistic and spiritual practices, Sofia fully transitioned into the role of a Holistic Advisor in the year 2018.

Sofia’s dedication led her to work towards integrating inspired ayurvedic massage therapy into the Swedish healthcare system, specifically within the framework of wellness. This initiative aimed to contribute to the well-being of individuals working in the healthcare sector in Sweden. Simultaneously, she shared her 20 years of expertise as a Reiki healer, incorporating the chakra system, working with moonology and understanding the phases of the moon into her holistic approach. Her unique blend of experiences, including collaborations with physiotherapists as well as working as a spa therapist in several luxury hotels, enriched her skills as a holistic wellness practitioner.

In 2023, recognising the expansion of her services to encompass spiritual therapy and a personalised approach tailored to each client's needs, Sofia rebranded her enterprise as Fia Soul Wisdom.

In a brief conversation with ItsGoa, Sofia shares insights into her life, her journey in the world of Ayurveda and holistic wellness, the various services provided by her enterprise and lots more.

After completing my education in Ayurvedic massage therapy in 2004, I sought additional training in Shirodhara treatment under the guidance of my Ayurvedic doctor-teacher. In 2005, I started working at his clinic which catered to clients from the Osho Ashram.

In mid-2005, I joined the prestigious Taj Blue Diamond Hotel in Pune and started working as a spa therapist. I continued working at the hotel till late 2006 after which I relocated to Bangalore and worked alongside several physiotherapists. During this period, I specialised in massage therapy for sports injuries and received training in microdermabrasion.

Sofia Felicidade Rego Tell us a bit about yourself

I was born in Kuwait in 1986. I did my primary schooling over there at The Indian School, Salmiya. However, due to the outbreak of the Gulf War in 1990, I had to return to Goa along with my family. Here in Goa, I settled in my native village of Aldona and continued my schooling at. After completing high school, I pursued my higher secondary education at a college in Mapusa. There, I completed 12th grade with a focus on Vocational Accounting.

Driven by a strong passion to learn about the human body and massage therapy, I sought guidance from my grandmother, who consulted with an Ayurvedic doctor. Acting on the doctor's advice, I embarked on a journey to Pune University to enrol in a course on Ayurvedic massage therapy.

Give us a brief picture of your professional career after you completed your higher education.

In 2008, with the assistance of my Goan friend, Russel, I ventured to Dubai, where I secured a position as a junior spa therapist at Park Hyatt Dubai. In 2010, I joined the One&Only Royal Mirage Hotel in Dubai as a spa therapist. At this hotel, I received training on how to provide holistic treatments to clients using Espa products. In 2011, I was transferred to One&Only The Palm Hotel where I continued my work as a spa therapist.

In late 2012, I moved to Sweden. With the assistance of my friends, Pavel and Helena, I secured an interview at Select Collection, a luxury travel spa. This company, operating as a travel agency, collaborated with 500 hotels, and I became a part of their team.

My diverse experiences in different locations and roles deeply enriched my knowledge and skills as a provider of holistic wellness treatments. This journey ultimately contributed to the establishment and evolution of Fia Soul Wisdom.

What inspired you to start your enterprise?

My journey, which has been marked by challenges such as dyslexia and language barriers, played a pivotal role in inspiring me to embark on the entrepreneurial path I have taken. The struggle to find suitable employment in Sweden due to

www.itsgoa.com

itsgoa_

Itsgoa

language constraints led to this pivotal decision – to start an enterprise that aligned with my skills and expertise.

Given the linguistic challenges I faced in finding a Swedish-speaking job and the scarcity of Englishspeaking opportunities in Sweden, I made the courageous decision to establish my own enterprise. This decision not only provided a solution to my employment concerns but also allowed me to leverage my proficiency in English, catering to the diverse community of expatriates in Stockholm.

Recognising the abundance of expats and the willingness of the Swedish-speaking population to engage in English, I saw an opportunity to contribute to the healthcare system in Sweden. My expertise as a holistic massage therapist and spiritual healer strongly positioned me to offer valuable services in a multicultural and cosmopolitan city like Stockholm. Thus, Fia Soul Wisdom was born out of my determination to overcome obstacles, create opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to the well-being of others.

What was the response from the public like when your enterprise just started?

The initial response to Fia Soul Wisdom was positive and encouraging, especially as I began offering on-site contracts with 25-minute classic Swedish massages. Despite the established norm, my unique approach to the classic Swedish massage, influenced by my Indian heritage and a wide range of skills, was well-received by the public. Clients appreciated and requested my distinct style, showcasing a preference for the personalised and culturally influenced treatments I provided.

My approach resonated with my clients, and my ability to offer them a unique and customised experience contributed to the initial success of Fia Soul Wisdom. Such positive feedback likely played a crucial role in building my reputation and client base as I ventured into the early stages of my entrepreneurial journey.

Who are your major clients?

My major clients are individuals seeking a unique blend of holistic massage therapy and energy healing. Focusing on bridging classic massage therapy with energy healing techniques such as Reiki, crystal healing, and chakra healing, I have created a distinctive and personalised approach that resonates with my clientele. My sessions serve as workshops, where I not only provide therapeutic treatment but also educate my clients about their bodies. The emphasis on intuition and my diverse therapeutic experience contribute to the effectiveness of my sessions.

Returning clients appreciate my holistic approach, seeking not only relaxation but also insights into their bodies and minds. By incorporating Ayurvedic principles, I make them aware of how understanding one's body type influences the type of massage they receive. This integration of knowledge adds a unique dimension to my practice, allowing clients to sense energy movement during the sessions.

Sofia providing hand and foot reflexology

My commitment to working with regular clients, regardless of their prior knowledge of energy work, helps demystify spiritual therapy. By offering a hands-on experience, I enable clients to feel

the energy during the massage, allowing them to make informed decisions about their preferences. This approach aligns with my goal of promoting awareness and acceptance of energy work within the healthcare system in Sweden.

Furthermore, my engagement with the Swedish healthcare system, including the recognition of Reiki healing being beneficial to an individual's health, highlights the integration of alternative therapies into mainstream healthcare. This demonstrates my dedication to not only providing valuable services but also contributing to the broader acceptance and understanding of energy work in the healthcare landscape.

What are your future plans for your enterprise?

In the days ahead, I aspire to continue my work of channelling healing energy and providing spiritual messages to my cherished clients. Simultaneously, my vision extends to nurturing the growth of my enterprise. Through my side venture as a Holistic Concierge connector, I aim to create connections between therapists and clients worldwide, fostering a community bound by holistic well-being. I intend to embark on a harmonious path of healing and global connection towards healing the world.

Is there anything else you would like to mention

about yourself and/or your enterprise?

I have mainly focused on in-person clients over the years and kept supporting clients in Sweden. However, my vision has always been to support souls online and now, I plan to do more online work. My objective is to expand my support to a wider audience, and what better way than starting with my home town, Goa.
