isque, off-white, or almond — call it what you may — nobody wants appliances in that colour. Although designers have been predicting its demise for many years, bisque took a bit
longer to join the abandoned avocado and harvest gold finishes from the 1970s, and may they all rest in peace. Stainless steel has become the most popular finish for kitchens these days. GE
introduced its slate finish in 2012, which has remained popular because it blends with anything. The dark-gray textured finish is magnetic and hides fingerprints, unlike stainless steel. Slate perfectly harmonises with today’s materials and colours and can appeal to every taste. While the luxury brands of appliances, including Monogram, Sub-Zero, and Wolf, continue to provide quality appliances in the commercial look of stainless steel, other appliance manufacturers have introduced alternatives to attract consumers with more eclectic tastes. GE has been the innovative leader in providing new desirable options, introducing its black slate and black stainless finishes in 2017. Besides looking great, these finishes are considered easier to clean than stainless steel, and both are resistant to fingerprints. The recent launch of GE’s new Café Collection includes matte white and matte black finish appliances, with four options of brushed hardware: stainless steel, copper, bronze, and black. This new customisable collection allows consumers to add their personal design choices while creating a warmth, depth, and balance that flow throughout their perfect kitchens. Colour of the year Karoline DeCosta of Rowe Spurling Paint reviews the “colours of the year”
E
very year paint companies release their colour predictions for the upcoming season. Think of it as the paint colour fashion awards. With my love of the colour grey, I was over the moon when Benjamin Moore announced that the 2019 Color of the Year was AF-690 Metropolitan. Because greys have so many undertones, finding

the right one can be tough, but Metropolitan strikes just the right balance between too warm (beige) or too cool (blue). It has a nice depth, too, so it’s perfect for making large rooms feel cosier but not too dark that it can’t be used in smaller rooms as well. Benjamin Moore Metropolitan can be found in the Affinity fan deck, which is a collection of 144 colours that are designed
to complement and work well with each other. It’s just enough choice to give you a variety but not enough that you’re overwhelmed. Nautical Inspiration An historic cottage with harbour views gets a contemporary update
B
ryan and Wendy McLeod are homeowners with an affinity for classic Bermuda houses in need of updating. So Hodsons House, an old Bermuda cottage last renovated in the 1960s, was a perfect project for them. As with many old homes, the layout was quite closed and needed to be opened up. The main room was both the living and dining room and quite formal, too, with dark wood trim. Although the cottage had stunning harbour views, most of the windows faced away from the water.

Meanwhile, a narrow and dated galley kitchen was entirely closed off from the main room. “We wanted the kitchen to be part of the main living space as well as going for a less formal, coastal cottage vibe,” says Mrs. McLeod. “By tearing down the wall between the kitchen and the living room, we ended up with a fabulous 32-footx-16-foot great room with panoramic harbour views. They also reclaimed enough Bermuda stone for a 40-foot garden wall. Part of the charm of many older
homes is that they were not originally built as homes. “Sixteen feet is unusually wide for an old Bermuda cottage,” says Mrs. McLeod. “We wonder if it started life as a barn or coach house.” Of course, a modern open-plan layout can have its drawbacks, and Mrs. McLeod says she and her husband were sure not about having the kitchen draw too much attention away from the living space. “We went for a simple, nautical look with white upper cabinets and dark blue (Van Deusen Blue) lower cabinets with HouseGardenKitchen&Bath 2019

She also says there was “a lengthy debate on tile versus wood flooring,” and they eventually settled on … neither. “We are both pleased with the foam-cushioned, wood look, vinyl plank flooring,” she says. “It’s soft underfoot, waterproof, and you really have a hard time telling it from wood.” The “big splurge” was the peninsula with an induction cooktop placed in a blue Macauba quartz countertop. The peninsula’s cabinets were designed to use the full-size (9 foot x 4.5 foot) natural stone slab, which accommodates not only the five-element cooktop but also seats four and has cabinets on both sides. “It’s wonderful for entertaining, and we love the induction cooktop,” says Mrs. McLeod.

The bathrooms at Hodsons House are en suite 8-foot-x-6-foot bathrooms, which have been remodelled in a European style. “It’s almost impossible to make a small bathroom feel spacious, but we’ve always liked the minimalist European bathrooms, which are so functional and easy to keep clean,� she says. “This is our third house, and we are getting very good with curbless showers. Once you get the hang of it, they are actually less expensive than a regular shower.� She says the advantage of a small en suite bathroom is that usually only one person will use the bathroom at a time, and the shower’s privacy glass is not needed. “The splash zone is about 40 inches,� she says. “No shower partition makes a small bathroom feel bigger as well as much easier to clean.�

Traditional Bermuda architecture mixes with present-day style

reating a spa experience in the bathroom and modern aesthetic in the kitchen were the main aims for Simon Hodgson of SDBS when designing Deedledee. In the kitchen the client required an open concept that provides a modern feel and flow to the home while still retaining its traditional Bermuda style and sensibilities.

INTERIORS Ample light and a sense of space were achieved with the installation of a large sliding glass wall that opens onto the pool area, suiting the kitchen’s function as the main gathering place for the home. Perhaps the most interesting feature in the kitchen is the LED light beams, which were custom designed by Mr. Hodgson and fabricated in Montreal. The beams were designed as a “modern twist on the traditional Bermuda open-beamed ceiling.” In the master bath, this meant the use of wood-style porcelain accent tiles, which have the required durability while also providing the suggestion of warmth to help create a relaxing atmosphere. A custom vanity, fabricated from walnut, is complemented by the tiles and further emphasises the spa feel. The remaining wall tile is a matte marble that was used in all the bathrooms in

INTERIORS the home. The floor tiles are laid out in a stylish yet traditional herringbone pattern, and a large modern bathtub is the focal point of the room. Brushed-bronze plumbing fixtures complete a classic look for this modern and serene space. The contractor for the project was DeSilva’s Construction, which says, “It was a relatively easy project to work on. The design and layouts were great, and we feel the clients were very happy with the construction and finish.”

Timeless Practicality
This midcentury family home is updated with a natural palette
P
racticality is often a key requirement when designing a family home. This, along with creating a timeless look, was the mandate for Cooper Gardner when redesigning the bathrooms and kitchen at Summerhill. In the bathrooms, this meant a monochrome palette with simple linear wall tiles laid in a grid pattern and replacing the yellow and pink hexagons tiles on the floor with a similar black hexagon tile. “I tried to keep the design aesthetic in line with what had gone before it and within the architectural framework of this midcentury property but with an updated more natural palette,” says senior interior designer Eimeir Johnston of Cooper Gardner. “Super-white quartzite stone was added to contrast with the linear tiles. This natural stone has deep beautiful veining and is a little dash of luxury in an otherwise pared-back scheme.” For the master bath, the designers

achieved a greater feeling of light and openness by removing the tub and creating a large, luxurious shower room. A wall of mirrors and a floor-to-ceiling glass shower panel were incorporated into the design while the use of simple aluminum, up and down wall sconces, fixed directly to the mirrors, helped increase the light levels. New floating vanities were also installed in both bathrooms. “These are wall-mounted and really help add to the sense of space while having practical drawers with full extension, so you can store items under the sink easily,” says Ms. Johnston. “The stone shelf above the sink adds natural movement and interest to the overall scheme and at the same time adds a surface to put razors and toothbrushes on.” For the kitchen, Cooper Gardner were tasked with upgrading the space without moving the plumbing, limiting the structural changes, and reusing some of the appliances while “keeping the design as practical and fuss-free as possible.” Ms. Johnston says the triangular shape of the kitchen, with doorways and
openings to multiple rooms, made it a difficult space to configure. “Ideally, it would have been nice to have a larger seating area by creating an island, but without structural changes this was not possible. Instead, a small seating area was created on the sink run to seat two people while keeping the circulation space in the centre of the room open.” HouseGardenKitchen&Bath 2019
INTERIORS She says the main theme of the Summerhill kitchen is a simple handleless solution. “This was chosen for its timeless appeal. Handles can date a kitchen, and hardware will always go in and out of fashion, so not using any helps prolong the appeal of a kitchen.� A V-groove in the flat cabinet doors adds a simple decorative element and helps break up the white panels, while the counters and back splash are natural stone. Under-cabinet LED lighting creates an additional layer of lighting that washes the stone with a soft warm glow. Finally, a simple concrete-look floor tile is both a neutral and cost-effective solution while also working with the monochrome palette.

eing both contractor and homeowner put DeSilva’s Construction, with the help of Botelho Wood Architects, into an ideal position when building Moonshine. The design theme throughout the home is one of simplicity and timelessness, which is apparent in the bathrooms and kitchen. The bathrooms are neutral and/or white with accent tiles used to provide colour and at the same time keep the look “as simple and as timeless as possible.” Thin grout lines provide a clean and neat look, and all the shower areas have niches to keep the shampoo and soap tidy and out of the way. To provide further character and accents, the master bath and powder room feature bronze hardware, while

the children’s and guest baths feature brushed-nickel or chrome finishes. With five in the family, the homeowners wanted a kitchen that was easy for everyone to use and to move about in. This was accomplished through a “simple yet solid design” that they felt would not go out of style. Keeping the colour scheme and materials neutral allows for seasonal decorations that add pops of colour throughout the year. Canvas colour cabinets with cocoa glazing, neutral granite countertops, and bronze hardware achieved the desired “rustic” style for the kitchen. Storage was also an important consideration for the family, so there are lots of cabinets and a pantry just off of the kitchen.

Just as important was a selection of appliances that could meet the demands of a busy family life that includes cooking, baking, and entertaining on a regular basis. Heavy-duty appliances were essential. There is a large stove, a wall oven, and a microwave, while an extralarge refrigerator allows for oversized items and trays to be kept cool when entertaining or prepping for holiday cooking. With the project now complete, the new homeowners are pleased with their accomplishment, saying, “this kitchen is exactly what we envisioned, as it’s such a joy to cook, bake and entertain in. We couldn’t be happier with the home and are looking forward to enjoying it for years to come.”

Seafarers’ Haven A local tour boat operator builds a Harbour Road dream home
W
hen this homeowner comes ashore from a life spent on board his boat, it makes sense that his home design would include a “subtle nod toward a nautical theme.” “Our client is the owner and operator of a number of tour boats and therefore has a strong association with our marine environment,” says senior interior designer Shelley Ray of L&S Design Ltd.

The nautical theme extended throughout the house includes three full en suite bathrooms, powder room, kitchen, and pool area. In addition to the colour scheme, fixtures that have a maritime connection were used where suitable. For instance, the bathroom cabinets feature thumb-turn latches that you find on boat cabinetry, while some of the exterior doors have brass portholes, and some of the light fixtures are brass and nautical in style. Of course, one of the differences between a land home and a boat is the
size of the spaces. L&S Design sought to create an open-plan concept for the kitchen, dining, and living rooms as well as the pool deck. “We created a casual atmosphere for family living and entertaining with an open concept to allow the flow of conversation within these spaces,” says Ms. Ray. “The 50-foot north wall is orientated toward the view with large door openings to further allow fluid living onto the pool area.” The design of the kitchen is classic and timeless with “an easy to live with colour scheme.” 23

This bathroom design provides comfort and a peaceful, relaxing retreat
S
ometimes interior design is about creating the canvas on which the homeowner can apply his or her own personalised, finishing touches. This was certainly the case with a unique and serene bathroom designed by OBMI, in Hamilton Parish. “The homeowner wanted to create a tranquil space while allowing natural light in,” says OBMI interior designer, Chanika Jones. “They were seeking an Asian theme with a Zen feel that they could accessorise with items they have collected during their travels.” To achieve this, OBMI took a minimalist approach with the features and utilised neutral colours and tones that are “known to be especially calming and soothing.” “The colour combination is easy to maintain and is infinitely flexible when adding accessories,” says Ms. Jones. Natural light was also sought to enhance the tranquility of the space. This was provided by a three-foot wide, double-hung window centred in the room. The vanity area separates ‘his and her’ sinks, and all the fixtures are brushednickel and “complement the muted

shades of brown beautifully.” The shower room has a large rain shower with an additional, wall-mounted, handheld showerhead. Perhaps the most outstanding feature of the bathroom is hidden beneath the floors, where a dual-heated floor system was installed — one for the shower room and the other for the main bathroom area. “My favourite aspect of the design is the heated floors,” says Ms. Jones. “They add a personal touch and an element of comfort for the home owner.” The floors in both the shower room and the main bathroom area are controlled by separate thermostats. Each thermostat is conveniently located, so that the homeowner can set each section’s temperature to ensure nice warm toes on a cold winter’s morning. Another notable feature of the bathroom, which encourages the homeowner to enjoy the Zen-inspired atmosphere, is the beautiful freestanding tub that is nestled in the corner of the shower room. “It allows the bather to relax and enjoy the natural light provided by the large window and views of the private
backyard,” she says. “Once the job was complete, the homeowner was very pleased and enjoyed adding finishing touches.”

Chef-approved appliances, a gourmet sink, a unique exhaust unit, and an island designed for sharing culinary creations are the hallmarks of this space.
A laundry is also cleverly tucked into the back corner, also home to a pantry.

y creating a timeless design, we were able to incorporate some of the traditional elements of Marshall Cottage for clients to enjoy in the years to come,” says Sarah Perry of CTX. In the master bath the homeowners understandably wanted to retain existing architectural features such as the original crown moldings and high ceilings. The bathroom design was not without its challenges, primary of which was the lack of windows and therefore natural light in the space. “Being that there was no natural light, 30
we needed to keep everything bright and airy,” says Ms. Perry. “We installed plenty of overhead recessed lights and maximum lighting at the vanity. Keeping the vanity off of the ground allowed the space to feel visually larger, and we kept the colour palette for the walls and ceiling light while grounding the space with a darker floor tile for contrast.” In the kitchen the design concept was to keep with the rest of the cottage, which is relaxed but with detailed touches. INTERIORS to incorporate different levels of accent lighting, such as undercounter and feature lights over the peninsula. This allows a different mood to be set when the kitchen isn’t in full use.� The main challenge, as is often the case in the smaller spaces of a cottage, was ensuring that the kitchen didn’t “encroach on the dining space too much.� “Keeping the kitchen as compact as possible while still trying to fit all of the necessities created a bit of a challenge,� she says. “We deemed the design to be successful in the end, still providing the client with all of the required storage and appliances.� CTX says that all kitchen designs must consider how the particular client intends to use the space and to ensure ample storage and access throughout. “Laying out the appliances and storage in any kitchen is very important,� says Ms. Perry. “For example, having drawers for foil and other storage items next to the fridge is important when considering making sandwiches, while larger drawers for pots and pans are useful next to the range for easy access while cooking.�

Personal Space OBMI helps put a personal stamp on the interior of this typical condominium layout
W
hile condominiums usually share a general layout, the colours, materials, and finishes used within the home allow owners to infuse their own personalities into the surroundings This was the task assigned, and achieved, by OBMI in the full redesign of a two-bedroom unit at Landmark. The remodelling included both the master and guest bathrooms where the colour palette consisted of muted blues and earth tones. The fixtures are polished chrome, while large-format white rectangular tiles are used on the walls and the floors. In the master bath mosaic tiles add colour and character to the space, and the guest bath includes accented blue tiles behind the vanity with a blue speckled border. Interior designer Chanika Jones of OBMI says the main priority for the master bath was accommodating the owner’s height. This was accomplished by the position of the shower head and the wall sconces.

INTERIORS “The homeowners were very pleased with the craftsmanship and care taken to complete their master and guest bathrooms,” says Ms. Jones. Meanwhile, the homeowners sought a traditional kitchen with ample storage that, considering the size of the space, required careful planning and “appropriate placement of the cabinets and drawers.” “The main considerations in designing a kitchen are function and the way in which the users maneuver around the space,” says Ms. Jones. “Careful consideration must also be given to height and arm reach as well as the depth of the appliances. “Cabinet handles and door swings that may cause some type of obstruction also have to be taken into account,” she continues. “This particular kitchen was quite small, so being able to use all the available space was very important.” Beyond the efficient use of space, OBMI also created the functionality and style desired by the clients. They wanted their kitchen to be connected with the adjacent dining area, allowing for conversation to flow seamlessly while preparing, serving, and enjoying meals, whether as a family or while entertaining friends. Ms. Jones says the focal point of the kitchen’s style is the beautiful, patinafinished zinc, French country style range hood that was custom-made in Austin, Texas. The beautiful wood flooring contrasts with the dove white cabinetry, and a large farm-style sink complements the quartz countertop. Simple glass pendant lights illuminate the surface separating the kitchen and the dining room, and LED Gimbal lights were installed in a sloped ceiling. From the outside, this clients’ home may be difficult to distinguish from their neighbours, but step inside and the space is now uniquely theirs.

Flawless and Durable Kitchen tops and book-matched full height backsplashes in this kitchen were made with a rare granite from Northern Brazil called Desert Sand Oscuro and are available through Surface Trends Limited. The fabrication featured CNC machined Roman-ogee edges, and an under counter sink with a very intricate CNC milled drain board cut into the stone. All installation seams were CNC milled to make them nearly invisible. The result was a flawless work area with a surface that is durable, hard and beautiful.
