Are You at Risk of Getting a Heart Attack or Stroke?

I discuss Cardiovascular disease (CVD) again. I nd that knowing your risks helps to prevent serious problems. It also gives you a chance to in uence your risk! Lots of challenges again for the new year…. CVD is a general term to describe diseases that affect the heart or blood vessels. A build-p of fatty deposits inside the arteries and an increased risk of blood clots are associated with these diseases.

Types of CVD (cardiovascular disease)

The four main types are:

Coronary heart disease

This happens when the ow of blood to the heart muscle is blocked or reduced. Examples are: heart attack and angina.

Strokes and TIAs

A stroke is where the blood supply to a part of the brain can be cut off (or temporarily in case of a TIA).

Peripheral arterial disease

In a peripheral arterial disease there's a blockage in the arteries to the limbs – usually the legs.

Aortic disease

An aortic aneurysm is an example. The aorta can be weak and bulges outwards. It can burst and cause a life-threatening bleeding.

Risk of CVD

It is not easy to identify a clear cause. There are risk factors. I mention the most important ones:

High blood pressure

High blood pressure can damage your blood vessels.

Smoking Smoking can damage and narrow your blood vessels.

High cholesterol

Cholesterol can narrow your blood vessels and can cause a blood clot.

Diabetes

In diabetes your blood sugar levels are too high. High blood sugar levels can damage the blood vessels and make them narrow.

Inactivity

If you don't exercise regularly, it's more likely that you'll have high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels and be overweight.

Being overweight

Being overweight or obese increases your risk of developing diabetes and high blood pressure, both of which are risk factors for CVD.

Family history of CVD

If you have family members with a history of CVD, your risk is also higher. Tell this to your GP! It might be worth checking your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Other risk factors

• age – when you are over 50 you are at higher risk.

• gender – men are more at risk

• diet

• alcohol

• ethnic background (South Asian)

Preventing Cardiovascular disease

A healthy lifestyle can lower your risk! A good GP can calculate your risk. A Cardiovascular Risk check is a sophisticated check of your heart health. It is especially good for adults aged 40 to 74 years old.

Stop smoking

If you smoke, you should try to give up as soon as possible.

Have a balanced diet

A healthy, balanced diet is recommended for a healthy heart. This diet should be low on saturated fats, salt and sugar. It should contain lots of bers, fruit and vegetables.

Exercise regularly

Do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week, such as cycling or walking. Start at a level you feel comfortable with and gradually increase this.

Watch your weight

If you're overweight or obese, a combination of regular exercise and a healthy diet can help you lose weight. Aim to get your BMI below 25.

Cut down on alcohol

Try not to exceed the recommended limit of 14alcohol units a week for men and women. If you do drink this much, you should aim to spread your drinking over three days or more.

Medication

If you have a particularly high risk of developing CVD, your GP may recommend taking medication to reduce your risk. Medications that may be recommended include statins to lower blood cholesterol levels, low-dose aspirin to prevent blood clots and tablets to reduce blood pressure. Modern dating has a different landscape compared to the past. Gone are the days when a relationship is deemed a certainty. Lots of phrases depict what a relationship is, from hook-ups, situationships, the talking stage, to friends with benefits. It’s rather rough for singles to find “the one” as many deprioritise connections, confuse intimacy with lust, can’t be alone, dismiss vulnerability… the list goes on. Ultimately, because commitment isn’t officially expressed, relationships are carried out on the principle of going with the flow. It’s soothing, yet dangerous at the same time. Uncertainty causes torment to most –whether they like to admit it or not.

Love Coach Jose Aditya points out that monetary matters play a major role in modern dating. More women are careerdriven, thus creating a strong sense of independence. Men are poised as the providers and protectors but many are part of the sandwich generation. “Naturally, a woman with her own income will look for a man who has more than her. The problem is, men with a higher income are the minority in Indonesia, and if there are any, they are usually married,” said the man whose stage name, Jose, stands for Jodoh Sejati or true mate.

Fear of commitment isn’t the underlying issue. It’s making peace with short-term circumstances that are detrimental. Access for men to claim needs from a relationship without actually being in one is easier. Fulfilled sexual desires sit high on the top of

needs. Women tend to settle for less, leaving them with no other choice but to accept their circumstances; wishful thinking that one day their love is reciprocated. The trend of marriage rates continues to decline in Indonesia, while the divorce rate increases, according to BPS data.

Coach Jose has been helping primarily women to embrace their femininity and work on their mental health to find their true matches since 2014. Previously a marketer familiarised with hypnotherapy, he has found his calling.

“I wanted to get married but my older sister wasn’t yet wed. Actually, she didn’t have a problem if I proceeded, but our Indonesian parents were worried that if she was overlooked, she’d be single forever. I decided to hold back on my marriage plans and help her psychologically, technically, and so on. After approximately six months of informal coaching, my sister finally got married,” he shares.

Throughout his coaching days, he’s noticed that today’s society sets criteria and standards based on what they want other people to perceive, not what they truly desire and spark joy. Everyone’s bare minimum is unique.

“What is your purpose in building a relationship?” he asks. Happiness stems from within oneself. “You need to know who you are first. Not your personification. Then, set your criteria, values, and purpose.” The need for sexuality, sharing, and having special partners undoubtedly stand out, all the while monetary and familial challenges, however, overpower in Indonesia.

Coach Jose’s observation reaches towards interracial couples. He perceives that most Indonesians view expats as a way to climb the social ladder; gain prestige or even improve genetics. “Actually, Asian people view their race as inferior compared to primarily Caucasians,” he adds.

Stigma cannot exist unless it has happened, over and over again. An Indonesian man with an expat woman is viewed as a champion, while the roles reserved deems the expat woman as an acceptance of the quality of life. To tackle cultural shock, Coach Jose said communication is key.

“Culture is in the location where one lives. Expats who come to Indonesia automatically adapt to the Indonesian culture. What’s different is that here, for example, the element of respect for parents is deeper. In fact, I dare to consider this a plus for expats,” he explains.

Those dear to us obviously have our best interests at heart. They would genuinely voice out “you deserve better”, which is somewhat ambiguous to Coach Jose. One of the reasons why women don’t find the right man is because they can’t find the best. “It’s better to search for the most compatible one,” he counsels. To do so, shift the focus of criteria to deep traits such as values, emotional maturity, mental maturity, etc. “These are far more important and can make you happier than what any salary per year can contribute.”

The gist every single person out there should remember is to not start a relationship based on needing one, but acknowledging why it’s important. Being oblivious will only create hassle and lots of drama. It’s also imperative to have polar energy where women embrace their femininity and men embrace their masculinity to create balance in a dynamic.

Be My Valentine

Lonely in a foreign country? I was. When I was hired by Cita Hati Sekolah in Surabaya thirteen years ago, I had three weeks to pack up my house in Vermont, New England, USA, and head to the airport. I wasn’t sure where Indonesia was and didn’t have much time to look at a map.

After adjusting to many different things as much as I could and feeling comfortable with the routine of school and the essentials of life, I realised I was lonely. My school colleagues were friendly but Indonesia is a family-centred culture and they were busy with their families.

I heard about a dating site called IndonesianCupid and took a look. Why not? I didn’t have anything in mind honestly, just some friendly contact with a woman. I was raised by women. I like women. I knew no Bahasa Indonesia at that time which made things difficult but not impossible as many Indonesian people know some English. I saw a picture of a young woman I liked very much - for the right reasons I think. She had a fun face and a positive aura about her, something special.

So, I sent her a message and found out she lived not too far away, maybe 30 minutes by taxi. We arranged to meet at Food Fest in Pakuwon City, the place where I ate dinner almost every night. “Let’s meet at The Wok,” I said.

Her mother delivered her to our date, so I had a chance to meet her and say something. She left saying she would return an hour or so later to pick up her daughter. All this seemed good to me as her mother cared and wanted to be part of the picture.

How do you start in a situation like this? We walked across to the Wok and I noticed she was very thin and walking unsteadily in high heels. I grew up with three sisters so I know things about girl stuff. I would say she had very little experience wearing high heels. It was charming to me that she was making an effort, risking breaking an ankle, or a leg! And she was very thin and small. That charmed me too for some unknown reason. More than that, I saw in person the honesty, humour, and positivity I had seen in the photo.

I touched her shoulder, to support her as we crossed the street. Or maybe I just wanted to touch her.

“Too small?” she asked.

“No,” I said. I like it.

“My name is Kwee Liang Yien,” she said, “but call me Jovita.”

I don’t remember if we ate. We talked for an hour straight, standing up while getting bitten by mosquitoes. She couldn't sit comfortably because she was recovering from a serious endometriosis operation. The surgery didn’t seem to have been particularly successful as she was still bleeding weeks after.

This would be the place where the man might call a cab and send his date back to where she came from, but I already cared about her for some mysterious reason. We talked and I asked her what kind of a man she was looking for. She answered, “faithful, God-fearing, responsible, kind, gentle,” and on like that. I said, “ I'm not sure I'm all those things but I think it's great that you want a man like that.” And I did and do think it's great.

I was 65 at the time. Now, when I think about it, I wonder how I could've been so bold as to enter into a relationship with someone 24 years younger. How could that make any sense? Well, we are who we are.

Mom came to pick her up and we arranged to go to church on the weekend for our next date. In the meantime, I thought about it a lot. We did go to church at Bethany, a space that can hold 35,000 people on big occasions. When leaving with the big crowd, she looked for my hand and held it, leading me through the throng. Back at her house, which she shared with her mom and her daughter Grace, I learned more. She had studied at the best Secretarial College here, Widya Mandala, and had a good job in export administration at a big Chinese

company working six days a week for many years to support her daughter and her shared life with Mom.

Together with Grace, who was about 16 at the time, they shared a small room with a tiny window. Jovita had a computer in the corner where she listened to music and did some online chatting with “pen pals” as they used to be called.

This seemed amazing to me and still does. I respected her life, her sense of responsibility, and her commitment to raising her daughter and to helping her mother. After all these years I still think about that with the same sense of respect and awe I did then.

Someone at school suggested I send her flowers and they helped me do that. A giant bouquet was delivered and soon, I saw a picture of her with it on Facebook with the caption “Who?” It was very cute and sweet.

We established a routine. Most evenings after school and when she got home from work, I took a taxi to her house and sit on the couch in the parlour area. Then we would

all go shopping or sometimes Mom would take us to a restaurant. It went on like that for a long time.

We also went to her old gynaecologist many times to check on her condition. I even contacted a top gynaecologist in Singapore. Finally, the condition healed and Jovita was healthy again.

Some things back home in Vermont were a problem for me. The people who lived in my house decided not to pay any more rent. That couldn't continue and I also had some problems with my situation in Surabaya, especially the little house the school provided. I prepared to go back.

A lot of things happened during that time. Jovita had some lumps in her breast. Previously, some fibroid tumours had been removed but now there were more symptoms. We went to the oncology clinic. While we were waiting for the results of all the tests, I thought about what I would do if she had cancer. I come from a cancer family and know more about it than I would wish anyone to know. I also knew about Indonesian health care, and the expenses involved in good care. What would I do? I'm a teacher, not a wealthy person. But I had a good house in Vermont worth something. I decided I would sell it if I had to do what I could to help my darling Jovita. That was a turning point as I'm a selfish person. Coming to that decision was transformational for me.

The tests came back negative. We had dodged another bullet. The next problem was that Mom didn’t want to let go of her daughter. We had decided for me to go back to the states and then for Jovita to follow. It did happen like that but not without a lot of drama and effort from her side, escaping from Mom to live in a boarding house, and several trips to Jakarta for medical checkups to qualify for a fiancé visa, and more.

I went back “home” and then had to fly back to Surabaya another time to pick her up and bring her to America. We were married in Bradford, Vermont; in a beautiful field full of autumn leaves by the Justice of the Peace. We stayed a year, then travelled to Trinidad and Tobago for a teaching job for two years, then to Bali for two years, and finally settled in Jovita’s hometown, Surabaya.

We're concluding this story or it would have to go on for many more pages. The unusual way our relationship developed depended on solving problems together one by one, and not dodging any of them. That's what made the difference and still does. We're a great team. Our latest project was the two-year process of buying and renovating a house in Surabaya where we are finally moved in and are very comfortable.

We developed the deep affectionate relationship everyone wants but few people to have. We consider it a gift. Happy Valentine’s Day.

Turn on the radio or switch on the television set and it is fairly certain that within a couple of minutes, outside you’ll hear the "L" word being mentioned. For centuries, songs, sonnets, plays, books, and poems have been written on the topic, and, of course, the last hundred years or so have seen this topic of penmanship transferred to the big and then small screens.

Love is - we are told - a basic and necessary ingredient of life, without which we cannot cope with life’s pressures and struggles, and yet it is also so often the cause of such misery of heartache.

What is this "L" at the centre of such consternation?

This "L", of course, is "Love".Let’s consider for a while whether it is really "all around", and "all we need".

There are many types of love and many reasons for loving. As well as the more conventional ideal of lovethat of romantic and requited attachment - the average person will experience many connections in various outlets and circumstances as they attempt to make sense of life while bumbling through it the best they can.

Happily enough for most of us, the first love we experience is that of and from our families. A parent’s love is said to be ever-lasting, unconditional, and more dependable than any other type we are likely to experience later in life. Whilst it is not true in every case, it is a general rule of thumb that parents will do anything for their children, and they are the very last to ever turn their backs, whatever the reason or provocation. Indeed, a person’s outlook on life often changes when they become a parent, and the very reason for living becomes magnified several-fold due to the emotions involved in caring for one so dependent.

Other familial love can be just as strong and bonding of course, with sibling relationships being particularly important. Friendships between brothers and sisters can be especially rewarding, yet such relationships sometimes can be somewhat less than straightforward

with the elder sibling frequently taking on more of a protective role rather than one of straightforward kinship.

What of that love we feel within platonic friendships, I hear you collectively ask? These can also be very rewarding, because not only are they relationships we have chosen for ourselves without the ties of genetics, but they usually come with a different setting or vibe, if you will, than that of the coupling of romantic partners. In fact, friends are often the ones we turn to when we have problems concerning our spouses or partners, as they are the ones who know us best and will treat us as normal entities and not put us on a pedestal.

Their advice (and words of admonishment, if necessary) may not initially always be welcomed, but they will be given in love and affection and will be honest in their reasoning and delivery. A lifelong friend is indeed a blessing, and if you are fortunate enough to have someone accompanying you throughout life’s journey in this manner then you are lucky indeed.

For many people though, the whole concept of "love", especially at this time of year with Valentine’s Day fast approaching, is connected with that of romantic attachment. To fall in love for the first time, it is said, is to really experience life for the first time. A partner to whom we are devoted and feel ready to give the rest of our life to - in many ways - completes us but also changes us. The realisation that we have fallen in love with someone is a wonderful yet frightening experience - as everything is still new and the possibilities ahead of us seem endless, joyful and exciting.

The early "honeymoon" period (sometimes literally) of being "in love" will last varying periods of time, but inevitably things will settle down and the two star-struck lovers will undergo a period whereby they really get to know each other better - warts and all - and this is the crucial period for any coupling. Once a sense of structure and routine has been established, the relationship will invariably either go from strength to strength or else start to flounder.

There is no doubt that it takes effort, compromise and sometimes downright determination to ensure a marriage or partnership lasts the distance, but most would agree that these are more than worthwhile sacrifices to make in light of the advantages and benefits a happy relationship brings.

As pondered above, once we have experienced the emotions of "love" are we ever truly the same as people again? Also, how about the agonies that love can bring to the table? Surely there is nothing worse than experiencing either unrequited love or - even worse - the heartbreak of a relationship ending against your will. The sleepless nights, the loss of appetite, and the constant moping and daydreaming over the love that has been lost or not returned seem to make a mockery of the old adage. “It is better to have loved and lost than to have not loved at all,” but these are experiences that most of us go through at some point in our lives.

Finally, what of possibly the most important love of all?

As Whitney Houston, amongst others, once sang, learning to love yourself is the most important love of all.

We must find time to appreciate ourselves and the people we are. Whilst self-improvement is commendable in many aspects, being constantly dissatisfied with our lot in life or what we perceive to be our character flaws or weaknesses is only going to end in negativity and unhappiness. We are all unique and have our own special skills and mindsets, so comparing ourselves either with other people or what we feel would be our ideal selves, is ultimately self-defeating and counteproductive.

Finally, as we go about our daily lives we should take the opportunity to smell the roses a bit. Enjoy being alive and embrace all the challenges and curveballs the world throws in our direction from time to time.

Remember, love really is all around.

Learning Love from the Philosophers

The 14th of February is celebrated as Valentine's Day. Despite its pros and cons, it signals a sound message about how love and affection have been a global mood in the immediate chime and the bustle of life. With Valentine's celebration, people may express their love and affection, not simply between a pair of young people in love but in a broader sense, among fellow human beings, married couples, parents, siblings, and more importantly, between the government and its people.

Two great Western thinkers — Plato and Rousseau, whose thoughts encourage the republic as a form of state and democracy and a political system that relates to the way of structuring and organising the republic — get into personal love between men and women. Love touches all areas of sustainability because the object of love is eternity. The eternity of love does not originate from the spiritualisation of “a priori”, but from the fact that people who make love desire to have constantly what is true.

Both Plato and Rousseau give a central position to love in their respective works. The first is aristocratic and homosexual, while the second is closely related to democratic ideals and heterosexual. For Plato, love has no need to be reciprocated and the difference between those who love and loved ones remains as it is. The love that Rousseau thinks is meaningful is only related to reciprocity, where the love experience of those who love is all-encompassing, while it is really unique to those who are loved.

The distinction is also inherent in the purpose of love set by the two thinkers. From a platonic perspective, love leads to philosophical life. For Rousseau, love is an inexorable basis for a political life of freedom.

Plato’s unique thinking is reflected in the so-called “ platonic love ”, a kind of esteemed love away from physical reality and associated with a more essential beauty. Modern human beings would find it hard to accept and swallow it. In truth, Plato recognises the attraction of bodily beauty. However, he opines that the best practice of love is a lofty motion from bodily idolisation to the point of beauty reflection. In other words, platonic love is not in physical enjoyment, but in the search for perfection.

Rousseau’s peculiar thought is dedicated to the political system aspiring for three passions: care, love, and patriotism. The love between husband and wife occupies a central position. Through marriage, a couple will raise a family, which is subject to a social contract. Each would submit his or her freedom to the general and be in line with the contract. Thanks to this formulation, a social corps is formed without referring to the existence of the leader who supervises it. This is Rousseau’s originality in the contractualist tradition; separate members are not united under the authority of a king; they unite and merge into what they have formed. This is not a conquest contract but a surrender to the collectivity created by the contract. It refers to the sovereign people that remain free.

Compared to Rousseau’s thought of love, platonic love is much more popular and easily found, for example, in literary works and entertainment. I read The Assault and was impressed by this novel after reading it for the first time in the 1990s. Written by renowned Dutch writer Harry Mulisch and published in 1982, the novel tells the story of a family torn apart during the Nazi occupation. The Assault begins at night in Anton’s family house. Anton, a 12-year-old boy who later narrates the story, is separated from his family after SS officers suddenly

arrive to search their commune. In jail, he meets a girl who comforts him. It’s a platonic love regarding the relationship between Anton and the girl. This novel elaborates on how someone returns to his past to discover the connection between past incidents to face the present.

Such is the case with Toilet Blues (2012) directed by Dirmawan Hatta. The film has a prologue and an epilogue. In between the two, the film offers the audience an abrupt and unconventional narrative of two teenagers and their shared journey in a pivotal time of their lives. Senior high schooler Anjani (Shirley Anggraini) is running away from home, getting away from her controlling father who is furious after finding her undressed with three teenage boys in a villa. With no certain destination on her mind, Anjani decides to go with Anggalih (Tim Matindas), whom she shared a platonic love with during their junior high school years, on a road and track trip.

Anggalih, whom she affectionately calls Lih, has just been on a vacation with his parents in Jakarta and is on his way for his final year at a seminary, which will end his first step towards becoming a Catholic priest. Anggalih is questioning his decision to become a priest. He tries to hide his doubt in front of Anjani. But having known him for most of her life, Anjani sees through him. Wanting nothing but to escape and be free, Anjani tries to persuade Anggalih to take a turn and go with her instead of becoming a priest.

In a more permissive society, platonic love rears its head as romantic love and sexual relations are not the be-all and end-all of relationships. That is why couples in platonic relationships take out joint bank accounts, adopt children, buy homes, and engage in other activities traditionally reserved for those who have gone through all the mandatory hormonally charged mating rituals. They believe that they can find true happiness without flirtation and physical intimacy.

Having gone through previously disillusioned and permissive life, couples in platonic relationships find that Valentine’s Day is vastly overrated, the Kama Sutra is vastly overrated, and baby bumps are vastly overrated. They believe nothing beats an unshakeable lifelong bond with someone who can provide deep friendship, companionship, shared values, adventure, laughter, and stability. Love goes beyond a short-term touch but constitutes an endlessly intense exercise regime physically, morally, and spiritually.

What You See is What You Get!

Although the origins of the phrase, “a picture is worth a thousand words ” are debatable, the most common understanding is that a picture conveys more information, more effectively than words sometimes can.

And if we’re OK with that assumption, then it makes sense that the better the picture, the better and more detailed the description or feeling could be. National Geographic photographer, David Alan Harvey, once said “don’t shoot what it looks like. Shoot what it feels like.” So, it makes sense that good pictures of your apartment, house, villa or hotel should move me somehow. Emotionally perhaps. Hopefully, move me enough to make you an offer that you’d accept and then buy.

When we first started Seven Stones Indonesia seven years ago, we tried to educate our real estate agents and our property vendors about the importance of professional photography. Surprisingly, it wasn’t such an easy idea to get across, but if you’re investing in, or dealing with real estate, we think it’s a game changer because it still seems there are folk out there who think it’s OK to try and sell property with second-rate, smartphone photos.

The subject came up again recently in one of our weekly marketing and branding meetings and we were presented with an idea aimed at vendors to help them see the value of using our professional photographers and videographers to help market property and hopefully, sell faster.

Let’s start with an article written by Shannon O’Brien on the Market Leader website. Her excellent piece entitled: Back Away From the iPhone and Hire a Photographer was written way back in 2013, and way before the latest iPhone made everyone a famous photographer, but the sentiment is as true now as it was then.

O’Brien begins with a question we ask each vendor wanting to list with us at Seven Stones Indonesia.

“Are you really taking photos of your house with a smartphone? You’re asking five hundred thousand dollars, right?” we ask. There’s usually an awkward silence. “How’s that working out for you? ”

The vendor quickly snaps back, “You’re the real estate agent, you should know how to sell my property!”

We’ve obviously hit a nerve and ruffled some feathers, but we always recommend you take professional photographs. Not only will your house look much better but you’ll also increase the chances of it selling faster.

There are many studies out there that suggest very strongly that real estate listings engage and (hopefully) lead to sales because of that all-important first impression; which means the photos.

Believe it or not, first impressions DO count, especially when you’re competing against the rest of the world and a whole new breed of smartphone photographers who wake up one morning convinced they’re better than someone with training and professional experience.

O’Brien and the Wall Street Journal argue that you only have one chance to impress; a scant two seconds to grab a buyer’s attention without a photograph, and 20 seconds with one. As it goes, that’s not a lot of time for that first impression. Truth is, if you have a great image, people engage. Have an obviously homemade snap and they don’t. That’s simple. It’s not rocket science folks.

“Why should I spend money on a photographer? And anyway, shouldn’t the real estate agent take the pictures? They’re selling the house and they’re the ones getting all the commissions, so I don’t think I should have to pay for that as well.”

The short and polite answer to that is, “No! Professional realtors are not professional photographers. You know, you get the right person for the right job.”

Here’s why. The real estate agent is focused on finding the right buyer for the right property and making the whole process as seamless and as enjoyable as possible. Their job is not to take second-rate pictures on a smartphone, just because you don’t see the value of creating a positive first impression.

O’Brien gives the perfect example when she asks, would the Co-Founder and Chairman of Nike, Phil Knight, whip out his smartphone and snap random photos of a pile of athletic shoes to be used in Nike’s print advertising? Obviously not! You know he’d be hiring professionals.

Pepper Productions write that “using quality, professional photography and video content across your website, social media, and other

digital channels not only catches the reader’s interest but also improves your visibility online. Images and video content are one of the most valuable tools for getting better results from your content. Visitors are 80 percent more likely to engage with content if it’s paired with an image and 64 percent more likely to remember what they read or heard.”

Here are three solid reasons to bite the bullet and use professional photographers instead of your smartphone for property listings.

Number One: First Impressions Count (a lot!)

You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression. Kylie Schwartz, writing at Start Blox, says first impressions last well beyond that first moment because of something called the “Primacy Effect”, which means that when someone experiences something before other things in a sequence, they remember that first thing more. And when you’re looking for property, chances are you’re going to filter through a lot of options before you start making a shortlist. Remember, as a vendor trying to sell a property, you want to be on that shortlist!

According to Invision Studio, over 80 percent of all homebuyers use the internet to research houses and discover the home they end up purchasing online before ever seeing it in person.

Stand Out from the Crowd

A buyer is going to be more attracted to a vendor who sees the value of presenting their property in the best possible light. Literally. Put yourselves in the shoes of a buyer who’s looking to spend half a million, or a million dollars (or more) on a dream home. They come across a villa you’ve built from the ground up with blood, sweat, and more than a few tears only to find poorly lit, badly composed images with WhatsApp Image in the picture title. It’s a subconscious connection that works across every business; if something looks like you spent time, energy and love making it be the best it can be, then the chances of connecting with someone who appreciates and values it in the same way you do increases.

The Washington Post suggest that 84 percent of home buyers said they wouldn’t even consider a property that didn’t have listing photos while 87 percent of home buyers relied on photos to help make their decision, according to the National Association of Realtors.

Professionally photographed homes sell 32 percent faster than other listings, according to VHT, a real estate photography company. And professionally photographed homes command a 47 percent higher asking price per square foot, according to Redfin
