Psoriasis

Awareness Initiative

A

round 3% of people worldwide suffer from psoriasis, a persistent skin disorder that affects a sizable section of the population. Roughly 2.8% of people in India suffer from psoriasis, which manifests as reddish, scaly skin patches. This considerably lowers the patient’s overall quality of life and causes both physical agony and social humiliation. Promoting societal acceptance of psoriasis and raising awareness of the condition in light of these difficulties is essential. Leading pharmaceutical business Dr Reddy’s Laboratories of Hyderabad, Telangana, took a daring step towards this aim on October 29, 2023, when they revealed Asia’s largest psoriasis ribbon in honor of World Psoriasis Day. Dr Reddy’s Laboratories is leading the ‘V for Psoriasis’ campaign, which seeks to empower patients and society at large by spreading an optimistic message. The campaign is an attempt to inform that psoriasis is treatable under the supervision of dermatologists and that it is not contagious. With its astounding 1.2 km length, the ribbon serves as a visually striking monument to the dedication of dermatologists and other medical professionals throughout India. Comprising an astounding 3077 dermatologist seals, it represents their commitment to aiding psoriasis sufferers and striving for a more welcoming community. Two separate orange and purple color cloth pieces were joined to form a completed ribbon measuring 1200 meters in length. Digital pledge for diabetes management

W

hen we hear the word diabetes, all kinds of thoughts come to our minds as it’s a disease with no cure. You can take steps to curb diabetes, but there is no cure. However, a healthy lifestyle, a healthy weight, and being active can keep diabetes at bay. Torrent Pharmaceutical Limited of Ahmedabad, Gujarat, established a record for organizing maximum pledges by doctors for holistic diabetes management. The doctors signed a digital pledge for holistic diabetes management at a conference organized by the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes 2023, Mumbai, which was conducted from November 16, 2023, to November 19, 2023. The activity made its way to the Asia Book Records (ABR). India is often referred to as the diabetes capital of the world, as it accounts for 17% of the total number of diabetes patients in the world. There are currently close to 80 million people with diabetes in India and this number is expected to increase to 135 million by 2045. The experts at the conference discussed in detail a holistic approach to the management of diabetes which includes physical activities, a healthy diet, and required medication. Their emphasis was on the consumption of fruits and vegetables in moderate amounts, besides opting for whole grains, like quinoa, barley, rice, and oats. It was also emphasized that diabetic patients should go for dairy products made of low-fat or skimmed milk in the form of cheese and curd. Proteins include lean meats, chicken, fish, eggs, nuts, beans, lentils, and tofu. Apart from eating these food items, such patients should avoid certain kinds of food to control blood sugar. Cutting down on foods that are high in carbs can also help. Aerated drinks and chapatis made of flour should be avoided. Starchy vegetables like corn, peas, and white potatoes should be minimal. Exercising

regularly can help manage blood sugar levels and weight. It will also help reduce the risk of heart attack and other heart-related problems. Exercise includes brisk walking daily for about 30 minutes. Psychosocial problems are prevalent in diabetes patients and lead to a severe negative impact on patients’ well-being and social life. So instead of ignoring it, one must address it and take care of it. The psychosocial aspects include cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social factors, which can only be resolved with proper care and guidance. A diabetic person is low in self-esteem and is always anxious about their health. So apart from the treatment, intervention in the form of counseling and psychological support would help overcome the psychological barriers associated with self-care for diabetes. Earlier also, the company set a record by organizing the maximum number of awareness camps pan India with the help of medical representatives posted in different parts of the country. The patients who visited the medical camps were apprised of the symptoms and precautions to keep diabetes at bay. The camps were held in almost every state and Union Territory, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, West Bengal, Orissa, Bihar, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and many other places. Medical experts from the respective areas were also engaged to make the initiative a remarkable success.

R

ifah Taskeen, daughter of Tajuddin, a contractor and a famous racer who won several state and national awards, had dreamt of becoming a world champion but could not achieve it. Keeping this in mind, Tajuddin decided to make his second daughter to achieve the same. When he was into racing, people from not only across the district but also from neighboring districts used to come and watch his racing skills. On similar lines, now people arrive from faraway places to witness his daughter’s driving talent. Rifah has set the India Book of Record for the ‘maximum number of vehicles driven by a girl’ by driving a multitude of vehicles starting from two-wheelers, moving to four-wheelers, and finally to large trucks, tractors and excavators at the HUDA Public School, Mysuru, Karnataka. In total the young teenager (born on July 9, 2010) drove 8 vehicles expertly. The confidence and courage she displayed during her drive left onlookers speechless. Without any discomfort, she displayed her driving skills. Once she got control of the truck, for Rifah it was like riding a normal four-wheeler. According to Tajuddin, her father, who is determined to make Rifah a Formula 1 car racer, “When she was just six months old, I used to take her for a ride. Gradually she got attracted towards the car and driving. When she was just three years old, she started to learn how to drive and in a span of just a few months, she managed to drive all sorts of four-wheelers and multi-axle vehicles. Later on, I too encouraged her towards driving, and today she can drive any type of four-wheeler and even trucks and other heavy vehicles.”

Rifah herself wants to become a fighter plane pilot and serve the country through the Indian Air Force (IAF). Apart from this she also wants to take up racing professionally. Like most other parents, Tajuddin had hoped for a boy to make his dream of becoming a renowned racer. But when his second child was also a girl, he decided not to hold any prejudice. Delighted Rifah says, “It’s because of my father’s encouragement and support I could manage to achieve all this. I want to achieve more and bring greater laurels to my parents, to my city Mysuru, and the nation. I wish to take part in car racing and I want to become a fighter pilot.” Earlier also, at the age of seven years, the talented girl shocked everyone by driving five cars, five sports utility vehicles (SUVs), three mini lorries, and three other vehicles at the Bannimantap ground in Mysuru. At that time, she was a class 2 student at the Saint Joseph School, Mysuru. The feat was done with permission from the city traffic police, Karnataka Primary Education Department, and Child Protection Commission. The recognition from the India Book of Records is a new feather in her cap.
