HR HISTORIC HIGHLIGHTS CLOCK TOWER Ever wonder what inspired the design for the Highlands Ranch Town Center and its clock tower looming above the spread of buildings? John Kilrow, the person behind the design, was inspired from his boyhood days in New England. Kilrow, now Senior VP of Development for Shea Properties, grew up in Rhode Island. “I went back to my roots in New England. I sat in pocket parks, saw a water fountain in a park in Newport, R.I., and a clock tower in Dorchester, Mass.” He brought back photographs of these places for design consideration. “The intent was to create a landmark and a sense of place as well as introduce a community space within a private development,” said Brian Konczak, partner with MOA Architecture, then a “lead captain” for the project, whose company did the working drawings. “The design creates a clear visual access to the heart of Town Center,” he continued. That access is via Dorchester Street that Kilrow named after Dorchester, Mass. To add a personal touch during construction, buildings were given names, such as Frederick, after a Frederick Building in Boston. Pat, the 53 foot clock tower—though not the tallest building in Highlands Ranch—is an iconic image for the community. It is named for the contractor’s superintendent.

JERRY FLANNERY CEO and General Manager Happy April showers everyone! It would be nice to have some more precipitation ahead of the warm summer temperatures and fire season wouldn’t it? We are coming up on the most active part of the year, so first remember to pay your quarterly assessment dues this month and then dust off the bike and lawn chairs and get ready for some outdoor fun!

EVENTS: April is full of fun events for you and the family! The HRCA events team continues to present Virtual programming to give people access to fun, free events like the Winter Cultural Series videos, the UCHealth Series Talks, and Happy Hours. Check the web site for the most up-to-date information on events at www.HRCAonline. org/Events. ELECTION RESULTS: Homeowners Jim Allen, John Mackowiak, and Brock Norris ran for the two open Board of Director’s seats at the March 9 Annual Meeting. The Delegates re-elected Jim Allen and Brock Norris for another two-year term.

All their service to the community is much appreciated and we look forward to working with the winners. The Delegate Election for odd and vacant districts is happening this month with a deadline date of April 27. Please take a moment to complete and return the election proxy that was mailed to applicable districts so that we can continue to have homeowner representation at our monthly meetings.

COVID-19 UPDATE: State restrictions are lessening with the continued distribution of the vaccine and other safety protocols in place. As a result, we are now able to resume our pre-COVID opening hours at Northridge. For continued updates like these and reservations for the gyms and pools visit www.HRCAonline.org/COVID.

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH: LARRY W.: Larry is a very familiar face around TR. He began volunteering in 2015 at the suggestion of his daughter, Jaime, who worked in Therapeutic Recreation at

the time. Most of his volunteering has been with basketball, but he has also helped with Tri Camp, iCan Bike Camp, Soccer, Sports Camps, and carving pumpkins with our Thrilling Thursdays group around Halloween. Larry grew up playing a variety of sports; he enjoyed basketball, lacrosse, skiing and golf the most. Larry is originally from Philadelphia, but moved to Colorado in 1973 to attend CSU. He has called Colorado his home for almost 50 years. Larry has been retired for 5 years, but spent 40+ years in his career in the transportation field with CDOT, and as a consultant. When asked to share an interesting fact about himself, Larry said he is really enjoying being a grandpa to his 16-monthold granddaughter! His advice to people thinking about volunteering? "Give it a try, you won't regret it!" Congratulations Larry, you are our volunteer of the month!

DROUGHT CONDITIONS CREATE NEED TO SAVE WATER According to the latest drought monitor at www.droughtmonitor.unl.edu, Douglas County is currently experiencing exceptional drought conditions. When looking at Colorado, the entire state is experiencing some level of drought from moderate to exceptional conditions. Centennial Water & Sanitation District, your water and wastewater provider, is taking steps now in anticipation of a dry summer. Customers are asked to do their part as well. Start conservation planning and take steps at home to use water more efficiently. Small things can be done at home, including checking for leaks throughout the home and being patient with outdoor watering. Water budgets for outdoor irrigation begin in April. Learn more at www.centennialwater.org/water-conservation.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING Recently, the HRCA Board of Directors, Delegates, Committee Members, members of the Association, and community partners had the opportunity to hear from members of the International Dark Sky-Association Colorado Chapter (IDA). The mission of IDA is to preserve and protect the nighttime environment and our heritage of dark skies through environmentally responsible outdoor lighting. There are simple changes all homeowners can make to let the night sky be the star, instead of street lights and lights on the exterior of homes. • Are your lights on timers or motiondetectors? This helps to ensure lights are turned off or dimmed when not needed. • Are you using high wattage light bulbs? Look for bulbs that will illuminate just the area in need, and not cast light well beyond the intended area. These are two things you can do to help celebrate International Dark Sky Week, which is April 5 - 12. Be a good neighbor and steward of the environment and turn off or adjust your outdoor lighting! For more information and ideas, visit the International Dark Sky Association at www.darksky.org. And if you haven’t removed your holiday lighting- now is the time! Per the Residential Improvement Guidelines, all holiday lighting needs to be removed within 30 days after the holiday season.
